1	palo olje po neki počeni cevi nanjo. Ko je farmar užgal olje v peči, je padla iskra na mačko, kateri se je nemudoma vnel njen z oljem prepojen kožušček. Mačka je kot živa bakla šinila iz kuhinje in preko dvorišča v gospodarsko poslopje, kjer je pla-|
i nila na kup sena. Kmalu je bilo 1 v ognju seno, mačka, prostor za tanke, kurnik, sedemnajst ton sena in 40 ton suhih češpelj, kar :je vse z mačko vred zgorelo.

Jrowderjeva žena, ki je ruska Židinja, je prišla v Ze-dinjene države nepostav-nim potom.
WASHINGTON. — General-i pravnik Jackson je odredil, a ima biti Raisa Irene Berk-lann Browder, žena Earla Irowderja, predsedniškega kan-idata komunistične stranke, de-ortirana v Rusijo, kjer je njena omovina. Deportirana bo zara-i nezakonitega vstopa v Zedi-jene države v letu 1933. Poleg tega, da je prišla neza-onito v Zedinjene države, radi esar bo deportirana, pa imajo vezne oblasti proti nji še druge „ akonske določbe, ki se jih lah- ' o poslužijo. Tako določa na irimer neka določba, da se more [eportirati one, ki propagirajo ( asilno strmoglavljenje ameriš-:e vlade in ki so ali so bili člani , irganizacije, ki veruje v nasilno > itrmoglavljenje vlade.
Mrs. Browder je bila aretirala dne 7. avgusta 1940, in sicer ; la obtožbo, da. je vstopila v Ze- j linjene države brez zakonite vi- j :e. Pri zaslišanju na Ellis Islan-lu, ki se je vršilo 13. avgusta, e Browderjeva žena izjavila, da 1 je stara 43 let ter da je prišla v 3edinjene države iz Kanade, in sicer na neki točki, ki ji je ne-mana.
Z Browder jem se je poročila v Moskvi leta 1926 ter ima ž njim troje sinov; dva sta bila rojena v Moskvi, eden v New Yorku. Earl Browder je dobil pred nekim ruskim sodiščem ločitev zakone od svoje prve žene.
Angleški bombniki nad Berlinom
Bombniki so prileteli v zgod-; njih večernih urah, ko se ^ je nahajalo na berlinskih ulicah tisoče ljudi.
BERLIN, 2. novembra. — Na osrčje Berlina so pričele snoči padati bombe, ko so prileteli nad mesto angleški bombniki. Ker je prišel napad zgodaj zvečer, je zatekel ljudi na ulicah, s katerih so se naglo razbežali zaklone proti bombam. Bombe angleških letalcev so ubile več ljudi, kakor naznanjajo nemška poročila.
Poročilo dalje naznanja, da se je samo nekaterim angleškim bombnikom posrečilo prodreti nemške zračne obrambe, nakar so bili ti bombniki prisiljeni, vreči svoje bombe iz velike višine.
Nemški bombniki pa so napadli tri angleške konvoje, v katerih so pogreznili 13 ladij s skupno tonažo 47,000 ton.
FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT
Predsednik Roosevelt bo prispel danes zvečer ob 1 7:30 na clevelandsko Terminal postajo.
Povorka proti Public Hallu se bo pričela ob 8:30. Predsednik bp govoril v Public Hallu od devetih do 1 desetih zvečer. Njegov govor bo oddajan preko radia.
Vrata v Public Hali se bodo odprla ob 6:45 zvečer. Predstavljanje demokratksih kandidatov se prične ob 7:30 zvečer. .. ^
Kako se bomo zbirali Slovenci za ta sprejem, je bilo že včeraj v našem listu navedeno. BUENOS AIRES, 2. novembra.—Argentinski živinorejci so izjavili tukajšnjemu angleškemu poslaništvu, da bodo poslej vse an- * gleške bojne ladje, ki bodo priplule v argentinska pristanišča, založili popolnoma brezplačno s svežim mesom.

Opereta "Srce in denar"
Slov. Soc. pevski zbor "Zarja" priredi na Zahvalni dan, to je v četrtek 21. novembra 1940 v Slovenskem narodnem domu, na St. Clair Ave., opereto "Srce in denar". Vstopnice so že v predprodaji in so po 40c, pri blagajni bodo po 50c. Po predstavi se vrši prosta zabava in ples, za katerega igra Jankovičev orkester. Zadnje in končno poizkusno glasovanje, katerih je že več priredil clevelandski dnevnik Plain Dealer, ki deluje za izvolitev; republikanskega kandidata Will- j kieja, izkazuje, da bo Roosevelt zmagal v Cuyahoga okraju z 98-1 000 glasovi večine.
V mestu Clevelandu bo zma-i gal predsednik z 251,329 glasovi, nad Willkiejem, ki bo dobil v mestu 124,851 glasov, toda v državi izven mesta bo dobil Willkie 28,000 glasov večine.
Dalje bo odnesel Willkie zmago v dveh mestnih vardah, in sicer v 19. in 20.
Največ glasov bo dobil predsednik Roosevelt v tradicionalnih demokratskih vardah ter od ljudi z nizkimi letnimi dohodki. (Zato pravi neki republikanski voditelj, da bodo volili Roosevel-ta samo reveži!).

JOHN JEGLICH V petek popoldne je po dolgi i mučni bolezni in trpljenju reminil v Cleveland Clinic bol-išnici dobro poznani John Je-lich, star 47 let, stanujoč na 156 Norwood Rd. Tukaj zapu-ča žalujočo soprogo Josephine, ojena Jereb, sina Henry in hčer eanne in veliko sorodnikov, lojen je bil v vasi Begunje pri .escah na Gorenjskem, kjer za-iušča brata Franka, sestro Ma-y, omož. Legat, in več sorodni-;ov. Tukaj je bival 27 let ter je iil član društev Napredni Slo-■enci, št. 5 SDZ, Slovenski So-:ol, katerega odbornik je bil več 2t in član samostojnega dru-tva Kranj, pri katerem je tudi iil več let v odboru. Prejšnja le-a je vodil gostilno na E. 40th !t. in Lakeside Ave. sedaj pa na Norwood Rd. Bil je splošno po-nan in aktiven na društvenem »olju. Pogreb se vrši v ponede-jek zjutraj ob 8:15 uri iz Jos. iele in sinovi pogrebnega zavo-la na 6502 St: Clair Ave. v eer-:ev sv. Vida ob 9:00 uri in nato la Calvary pokopališče. Bodi nu ohranjen blag spomin. Preostalim naše sožalje!
NEŽA PIŽEM Po dolgi bolezni je preminila la svojem domu Neža Pižem, rojena Kumel, stara 64 let, po iomače Javkova Neža. Doma je 3ila iz vasi Podgozd pri žužem-oerku na Dolenjskem, odkoder je prišla v Cleveland pred 41 leti. Tukaj zapušča žalujočega soproga Johna, sinova Johna in Franka, hčere Jennie Dodich, Mary in Agnes, sedem vnukov in več drugih sorodnikov, v starem kraju pa tri sestre. Pogreb se bo vršil v torek zjutraj iz hiše žalosti na 1390 East 43rd St. v cerkev sv. Vida in na Calvary pokopališče pod vodstvom Franka Zakrajška. Bodi ji ohranjen blag spomin, preostalim pa naše sožalje!
STEVE SRDICH V Cleveland Clinic je včeraj preminil Steve Srdich, stanujoč na 4343 Horner Rd., rodom Srb, v starosti 54 let. Tukaj zapušča dva brata, v starem kraju pa sestro in brata. Bil je član društev Franklin D. Roosevelt, št. 15 in Zrinski Frankopan št. 403 HBZ. Pogreb se bo vršil iz Louis Ferfolia pogrebnega zavoda v j cerkev sv. Save na E. 36th St. in I od tam na pokopališče. Bodi mu | ohranjen blag spomin.
OLGA BOKAR Včeraj je nagloma preminila | v Glenville bolnišnici Mrs. Olga Bokar, iz 286 East 150th St. v i starosti 33 let. Tukaj zapušča | žalujočega soproga Josepha in i tri otroke, najmlajši je star še-; le 4 mesece. Bila je hči dobro poznane Erbežnikove družine na Carl Ave. Pogreb ima v oskrbi A. Grdina in sinovi. je zoper napadalca treba pripraviti tako kakor se je sam pripravil. To ni le pravica, ampak zgodovinska dolžnost vseh, ki nočejo sveta izročiti največji tiraniji vseh dob.
Če je torej tako stanje stvari, je res nerazumljivo, zakaj vodijo slovenski listi, ki pravijo, da so delavski, obstruktivno in clefetistično politiko, ki bi, če bi ji mogla slediti ob letošnjih volitvah masa ameriškega naroda, privedla to deželo v prepad, iz katerega ne bi bilo rešitve . . .

If you go to the dances and happen to see someone gazing at the people in a rather unique way and muttering under her breath don't think that it is a psychopathic case (nut). It is only a scribe seeking material for her column. I'm one myself, not a nut, a reporter of course ... Well, ta! ta! my fran's, there won't be any more till next time. So long!

Kraljestvo kač
Na nekem hribu v Humih pri Mostarju si postavlja hišo Hamdo Omerovič. Njegovi delavci so tam blizu našli na stotine kač različne velikosti. Nekatere so bile posebno velike in težke preko 7 kg. Delavci so sklenili pobiti nevarne kače in njihova borba s kačjo zalego je trajala več kakor dve uri. Kače so silovito napadale delavce, ki so jih z naglimi in spretnimi udarci pobijali. Nekoliko kač je pobegnilo, pobitih pa je obležalo 180, vse same strupenjače.

Miller, chairman of the Cuya-' hoga County Democratic Com-1 mittee, and former mayor of Cleveland, truly stated the po-. sition of the common masses,' when he recently said:
"The battle lines are drawn' for the present campaign. On the one side stand the forces of, liberalism, progress, the inte-ests of labor, the farmers and other common folk as represented in the humanitarian strivings of the New Deal. On the other side are arrayed the cohorts of bankers, corporation lawyers, industrial executives and other reactionaries who hate 'that man in the White House' because in the interests o'f the 'forgotten' man he used the power of his administration to compel them to bear their full burdens of government."

This past weekend has been s a very busy one. Friday nights < the Belleire Club sponsors a < dance on St. Ciair, Slovenian i Nat. Home. Frank Foye beat out rythm for our young dancers ' last Friday ... Saturday night 1 brought us Sunny Ray and his orchestra. ^Quite a crowd of young people were there enjoying themselves ... Sunday night we went to hear "Ilirija" sing on Holmes Avenue. It was a succcss, a large crowd attended.

In one of my previous article, I stated that a very important sewage charter tax amendment would be on the ballot on November 5th, 1940, and that I would devote an entire column to this matter explaining it in detail.
In the last three years the city of Cleveland completed the building of its present sewage treatment and disposal system which includes the Easterly, Westerly and Southerly Sewage Plants considered one of the best, if not the best, Sewage and Disposal System in the world. This sewage disposal system must be operated and maintained at a cost to the people of Cleveland of a p proximately $750,000.00 per year and there are two ways to raise funds to pay this amount of operation costs. One way is the placing of a tax on your water bills and the other way is the tax on real estate.
Let us take first the water bill-sewage tax method which I am sure is familiar to every property owner in this community and for that matter to every one in the city of Cleveland.
When this method was first adopted about three years ago, a 40% sewage tax was placed on your water bill. This was later reduced to 25% and in January of this year finally taken off your water bill entirely.
During the current year (1940), the sawage plants are being operated by virtue of a $250,000.00 income from our general fund appropriated by the last special tax levy on March 27th, 1940 together with the back payments due and paid the city ,by the water bill customers when the sewage tax was taken off the water bill by city council on January 17th, 1940. Due to the tireless efforts of Councilman Edward L. Pu-cel, this arrangement was adopted by council, at a saving of .$500,000.00 to the taxpayers and water-consumers of the city of Cleveland—since the present administration was at that time seeking $750,000.00 to operate these plants but finally compromised on the plan adopted.
In addition to these two sources of income, the amount needed to operate under the water bill tax method was greater by over $100,000.00 because under this water bill tax method it was necessary to have separate books kept, more clerks to keep these records, more bill- j ing clerks and more collectors on the payroll. Under this arrangement many exemptions are made, for example, most of the factories in the flats and many of the downtown buildings claim exemption on the theory that none of the waste water goes directly into the sewage disposal lines but empties directly into the Cuyahoga River; the beer breweries also claim partial exemption thereby giving wide variance to favoritism and partiality.
On the other hand, the second method, paying of the operations by the general fund, places it in the same category as the garbage collections, everybody paying an equal share, with NO exemptions. This spreads out the payments giving the small home owner a

smaller amount to pay. Experience under the previous water bill tax method had shown that thousands of property and home-owners and operators have paid as much as five times more than they would pay if the sewage charter amendment is passed on Tuesday, November 5th, 1940.
Therefore under this sewage charter amendment method it is fair and more equitable to the vast majority of our taxpayers to pay in this way their share of the sewage system operation costs. If the sewage charter amendment is voted down on November 5th, the City Council will have no alternative but to re-establish the water bill sewage tax which was so bitterly condemned by our people in particular and all property I owners in general. I TAX PAYERS and CITIZENS—to protect your interests, vote YES on the Sewage Charter Amendment on November 5th, 1940 and tell your friends to do the same.

The Champ Strikes Back. — The man in
the White House is taking five nights off to answer some of the "more fantastic misstatements" of Windy L. Willkie. The very fact that the President is taking only five nights off to answer the charges that Windy L. Willkie was peddling with gusto to the people for the past several months, as he was wending his way about the country shows Windy up for what he is worth.
But the five thrusts at Windy will not be necessary. The straw-man that Wall Street put in the arena collapsed, only as a straw-man could, at the first impact of FDR's hardhitting fist when he delivered his first blow at convention hall in Philadelphia.
The Battle of the Century. — In this battle of the century, we stand with the Grand Ole Man of the Republic, because he is the personification of the forces of liberalism and progress.
Recently, in accepting the support of a group of liberals and independent voters, Roosevelt stated that, "we don't want to stand still and we don't want to go back."
"I am personally very, very happy to accept the support of every liberal and every progressive in the United States," said FDR, "because I think we all agree we are living in an age, an era, where the principles of democracy are at stake and are being attacked in many quarters.
He went on to add that, "we have not accomplished all for the country we want to do
—	there is a great deal left to be done."
FDR at His Best. — Last week Roosevelt, at convention hall, Philadelphia, was at his best. The New Deal principles became more dynamic by the sheer power of their enunciation by the man who believes in democracy not as it is, but as it should be.
He said: "The presidency is not a prize to be won by mere glittering promises. It is not a commodity to be sold by high pressure salesmanship and national advertising. The presidency is a most sacred trust. It ought not be dealt with on any level other than an appeal to reason and to humanity."
Glittering promises is right! How well we do remember the last campaign when the Republicans were for all the New Deal stood for, and more, but after the election they systematically fought each and every New Deal measure that came before congress that was to benefit labor.
Real Jobs? Windy has been telling us that, "a Republican victory would mean a real job with a real future for the head of every family instead of unemployment and a growing dependency upon the state under the New Deal."
"Weir" Are We Going? — Nice words, and cheap too, but they cannot be backed up with facts. And too, one has only to look at the company one keeps to see Weir we are headed for if the straw-man of Wall street and the publip utilities gets to the White House.
All the big shots of the United States Steel
—	or is it steal? — the Bethlehem Steel, the Weirton Steel are Republicans and backers of Windy L. Willkie. Are these big shots planning to use the industry to employ all the workers on relief and the WPA? Quite the contrary is true.
Modern Machinery and Unemployment. —
These industrial tycoons, instead of trying to put the unemployed back to work, are continually planning how to throw more out of work.
Eighty-five thousand steel workers have been thrown out of work by modern machinery last year. Fifty-six men at the new Clairton (Pa.) steel mill produce the same tonnage as 816 men turned out in the old type hand mill.
Mechanical mining has increased 77% in 1937. Having not been connected with the industry for the past several years, I do not have the latest figures. The mines are owned or controlled by the Mellon, Rockefeller and other interests that are supporting the Willkie candidacy. So where do the real jobs come in? Is Windy going to farm out the millions of unemployed on his vast acreage in Indiana?
"Candy-Stick Government!" — Because FDR gave the country's unemployed fifteen dollars a week to build dams, roads, public buildings, water systems, libraries, etc., Windy sneering-ly refers to the first social-minded administration as a "candy-stick government."
But nothing is said about the "relief" dished out to Charley G. Dawes' (remember Hell-and-Maria) bank in Chicago, to the tune of eight million dollars ,nor about the millions dished Qut in the form of subsidies to the aviation industry, merchant marine and the newspapers and magazines. Yet the government got nothing but slander from these private en-

erprizes that it helped to rescue from drown-ng in the quagmire of their own inefficiency.
The bililons of dollars that were sunk into the various banks, railroads and other private enterprizes are slow in returning into the United States' Treasury, but there is plen-of money for mansions, yachts and the smear-Roosevelt campaign. And it is this same element that is crying, "the budget is not balanced."
They also seem to forget that 21 billion dollars of this debt was created by a man named Hoover, and this money was not spent in this country but was sent to Europe and a good part of it went to Germany, out of which the present monstrosity of Hitlerism grew.
On the other hand, the fifteen-dollar-a-week-reliefers repaid their government by contributing something tangible to the country in the form of public works.
These reliefers, who, "all they ever did was to lean o\i the shovel," according to the enemies of the New Deal, built over 17,500 pubic buildings, laid almost three hundred thousand miles of highways, built thirty thousand bridges and six hundred airports.
Water systems and dams—the figures are Deyond my comprehension—that were built by the WPA will play an important part in our national defense, and Windy L. Willkie has the gall to say that FDR was asleep while Hitler was preparing to strike the death blow to democracy.
If these accomplishments are not what hey should be, the blame rests upon the shoulders of the die-hard reactionaries because it was they who hampered the work by cutting down the appropriations.
End of Democracy? — We would dismiss the charge that the country will go totalitarian if Roosevelt is re-elected as absurd had not Willkie himself, shortly after he was selected by Wall Street as its standard bearer, stated to reporters—strictly off the record of course, that what this country needs is a business dictatorship.
And what would this dictatorship be like? Our answer can be found in a special letter dated November 6, 1939, sent out by Wall Street's plunder-bund oracle, Roger W. Bab-son. This letter is confidential and sent out at $120.00 per year to investors, businessmen and industrialists.
The letter cannot be discussed in detail because it is in itself longer than this article, but the substance of it is that business is warfare and it will be more so when the present conflict in Europe comes to an end.
According to Babson/only those who will adjust their plans to warfare conditions will succeed. In so many words he tells us that the government will ultimately 'about face' in its policy of protecting labor, industry and capital ... the present 'nursing bottle' program will give way to free markets for commodities, labor and money . . . Short hours, easy terms and other present day Utopian policies will be thrown in the scrap heap . . .
"Business will discard inefficient executives and employees as they junked faulty machinery . . . 'Root-hog-or-die" will again be the schoolhouse motto . . . Young people who develop themselves spiritually, physically and mentally thru ardous efforts will be in demand. Those who do not will be put on chores, public works or in the army. The 'good old days' of Franklin D. Roosevelt's regime will fade into history.
"The churches, the labor unions, the schools and even the governments- are doing everything possible to prevent this business revolution—but it is coming . . . Labor Relations Boards are trying to brush back the sea with a broom; Wage and Hour legislation ;will be as helpless as a flintlock gun against a machine gun. Public relief will become only the Red Cross of this terrific conflict. All good intentions will untimately fail . .."
JVall Street's First Step. — I could go on and Dn quoting but why go on? Is this not sufficient to show where Willkie, Wall Street and other reactionaries stand? You must remember that this letter was not written for public (consumption, but was written for the bigwigs. When they talk to the public they say. 'We will give you jobs, real jobs, only elect us ,0 office," but when they talk to each other it s, "Business is warfare ... old machinery mist be discarded for new machinery. The manufacturer to succeed must adopt mass production methods ... he must adopt the same hard-boiled policies as to personnel... recognize that business is warfare and prepare for it..."
They Are Preparing for It. — Their first step is to put their puppet in the White House.

Hello, my little chicadees! I am feeling generous enough to take you all under my wing to tell you that the largest crowd in a Ion gtime attended the Twilight Ballroom last Saturday night where the S. W. U. Candle-lite Hallowe'en dance was in session. It seemed as if everyone in town was there this night and little doubt for Johnny Pecon's music was the main attraction ... The ideal couple Irma Yuretic and Victor Gruden were there and were dedicated the piece "Only Forever" for their engagement that was announced that night. Congratulations! ...
