VESTNIK 2020 | 33. NEDELJA MED LETOM 33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 46/56 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 15. 11. 2020 Fr. Ta prilika je na videz nekoliko zavajajoča, saj zagovarja 522 | VESTNIK 2020 Illustration “Speak properly,” parents sometimes complain when their children use slang language. Young peo- ple, however, are not the only ones who cut corners. Few of us use the formal word “telephone” these days, or to say “mathematics”, when “maths” will do. Rather than search our memories for more pre- cise terminology, people often refer to a “thing” or a “whatsit”. Just as we take shortcuts in our journeys, we economise in the way we speak. Youngsters who get criticised for a lazy way of speaking might well argue that they are at a higher stage of development! George Zipf would have agreed with them. He was a Harvard academic, 33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord. First Reading Prov. 31:10-13. 19-20. 30-31 The most attractive qualities in a person are not beauty or charm, but trustworthi- ness, wisdom, industriousness and gener- osity. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6 Speculating when the world will end is not the best way to prepare for it. We need to be working hard and doing the right thing when the Lord comes. Gospel Matthew 25:14-30 Jesus tells a parable about a rich man who entrusted his disposable wealth to the care of servants during his absence. He was furi- ous to find that one of them made no effort to put it to good use. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” zahteve po dobičku ter etiko, ki je lastna tržne- mu gospodarstvu in produktivnosti. V pripovedi Jezus dejansko poudarja dva vidika. ... Vredno razmisle- ka in ukrepanja. Časa je malo ... (Prim. Oznanjevalec 2005-2006, št 1) VESTNIK 2020 | 523 working in the 1940s, who saw the growing simplification of language as part of an evolu- tionary process. He noticed how most people use only six hundred words in daily conversa- tion even though they have a much wider vo- cabulary, and concluded that we will always try to solve problems in ways that minimise the overall workload. He called it “the principle of least effort”. That principle does not just apply to humans. All animals naturally choose the shortest route; the least demanding meth- od; what is most convenient to themselves. So it is that some people give up easily until en- couraged to persevere; that some are reluctant to volunteer until shamed into doing so; and that even the most well behaved of us may occasionally ignore signs to “Keep off the grass” and step out across a lawn when the path takes us by a longer route. Gospel Teaching A servant of God, however, is called al- ways to go that extra mile. Love overrides “the principle of least effort”. It goes out of its way to do everything possible. We do not ask, “How little can I get away with?” but “What else may I do?” The kingdom of heaven oper- ates by the principle of utmost effort, not least. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells the story of three servants to whom a rich man entrusted his fortune. Imposing loans on people was common in ancient times as a profitable way to deposit cash. Two of his employees were delighted to have such trust placed in them. After all, a talent was a coin of value, and he had lent them five and ten talents apiece. Ea- ger to please him, they showed enterprise in their use of his money; unlike the third servant, who wanted to save himself any trouble or anxiety. He simply dug a hole and buried it. God does not exploit people; nor was Jesus a financial advisor. He was interested in a different kind of treasure. God is rich in kindness and we are distributors of that grace. What God bestows is not meant to be hoarded. God gives us wisdom and skills that we may be of service; God forgives us that we might treat other people gener- ously. Such is the “commerce” of God’s kingdom: a reckless investment of our- selves with no cer- tainty of return, other than to increase the circulation of love in this world. Application Jesus had harsh things to say of the servant who bur- ied his one talent. All of us have some ability, however modest, and to hide it away or use it only for ourselves is more than laziness. What we have is not gifted, but loaned to us: we are trusted stewards of a grace intended for eve- ryone. It may feel risky to enter the “marketplace” of other people’s lives. Offering friendship can make us vulnerable. It was fear, perhaps, that kept the lazy servant from trad- ing his one talent. Fear that we might get nothing in re- turn can sometimes make people hesitant to give. The servant assumed his master to be a hard-nosed business- man who expected too much of people, and it may be that we have grown up with the same idea about God. Jesus shows us what our heavenly Father is really like: God’s happiness is in sharing. And so is ours. The principle of least effort will never make anyone happy. Easy achievements are not the most satisfying. Effort, time and loving attention give value to human endeavour and dig- nify people. The principle of the greatest effort brings a sense of fulfilment. It is the worship of our lives to give back with thanks what belongs to God. These closing days of the church year are a good time to make an audit of just how indebted we really are. Maybe we, too, have some- thing buried within us which might yet be consecrated to God’s service. 524 | VESTNIK 2020 Cilj naše kampanje je v treh letih zbrati vso- to $200,000.00. VESTNIK 2020 | 525 SLOVENSKA ŠOLA: ADVENTURES IN ONLINE LEARNING Well, it’s been a busy few weeks at Slov- enska Šola. Due to COVID19 we were not able to have classes run in our school. Instead, we have moved our classes online and it has been a HUGE learning curve… especially for the teachers! Lorie and I have attended some training sessions on how to use the online platform and there will be some more in our near future so that we, and the students, can get the most out of our available resources. Our first class was on October 28, 2020 and we have had 3 classes in total so far. While it’s unfortunate that we can’t be in our regular classrooms, it’s been really nice to see our stu- dents again! One benefit of the online platform is that Lorie and I can split our classes and have the different grades check-into class at different times. This allows us to focus specifically on a particular group uninterrupted and we are getting a lot done in a shorter amount of time. While we’d all rather be in our classrooms, it looks like this will be our new normal for a while! - Sandy Ferletič You may have seen the hints in the Vestnik over the last couple of weeks and Šola can now confirm that we have been in touch with Miklavž and he WILL be visiting our parish on December 6, 2020 to keep this annual tradition alive! Because of COVID, we can't have our annual banquet. We are still working out the exact details of his visit since we want ensure we respect all the COVID restrictions. Miklavž will likely arrive at our church or hall at the end of the Mass and will have his usual gifts to hand out at that time. To ensure that he has the right number of gifts, we ask that you email Sandy at sferlet- ic@gmail.com with the number of children who will be attending. This last week we have had some really wonderful weather. With all the challenges we have had over the past 6 months with COVID-19, it is nice to at least have the sun shining this far into November. Another something our parishioners have to look forward to is "Krofe" on Sunday December 6th. We have a commit- ment from a number of our parish ladies to bake this delicious treat so that we can enjoy some of our more traditional Slovenian flavours. We will be taking pre-orders for "Krofe" so that we can organize and prepare ourselves accordingly. Krofe can be purchased in the following quantities: 6 for $12 or 12 for $20 Krofe are to be pre-ordered by calling Heidy Novak at 905-317-6002 or by email at novakhsn@gmail.com All orders are to be pre-paid by e-transfer, or as arranged when you place your order. The e-transfer password to be used is Krofe. Pick up of these delicious treats will be after mass on Sunday December 6th. We will have a maximum quantity available, so orders will be filled on a first come first serve basis. Please stay tuned and read the vestnik as there will be more details to follow. On behalf of the Parish Council - we wish everyone a Happy Sunday! Ob koncu maše smo sorodnikom izročili napis in svečko. Hvala vsem za udeležbo in sodelovanje.
