St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 34/47 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 11.9.2011 24. NEDELJA MED LETOM 24th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Odpuščanje brez meja Fr. Drago Gačnik sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Telefon - Telephone 905-561-5971 Fax 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@cogeco.ca http://www.carantha.net/ st_gregory_the_great_slovenian _church.htm Iz današnjega evangelija moremo razbrati Jezusov odgovor na vprašanja, kolikokrat naj bližnjemu odpustimo, kaj naj mu odpustimo in kakšno naj bo naše odpuščanje. Kaj naj odpustimo? V zgodbi o dveh hlapcih Jezus omenja denar. Le takšno ju je sposobno razumeti in Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendents of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school, as many already have done, especially this past summer on the school excursion to Slovenia. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended. They are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our level one program is geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. -with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL 2011-12 is on September 17, at 9:00 A.M. in the classroom behind the upper hall. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage, which your own parents worked so hard to maintain. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summer of 2000 and this past summer, we organized an excursion of Slovenia for them, to give them the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last two excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing another one down the road. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on Sept. 18. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. If you are uncertain about enrolling your children in Slovenian School, please feel free to visit our school and see its set up, observe our classes and talk to the teachers. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you at REGISTRATION on SEPTEMBER 17, 9:00 A.M. Second Reading Romans 14:7-9 Christ is the Lord of all - living and dead. Gospel Matthew 18:21-35 To withhold forgiveness from others is to deny it to ourselves. Gospel Teaching In some tropical countries, where monkeys were regarded as pests, people used to employ an ingenious trick to catch the monkeys. They would hollow out a coconut, leaving just a small hole in one end, into which they would place some fruit or nuts. The hole had to be just big enough for a monkey to be able to squeeze its hand inside. Then they would leave the coconut on the ground and withdraw. The monkey would come along, investigate the coconut, smell the fruit or nuts inside it, reach in and close its hand around the food. But now, grasping the food, the monkey's hand would be too big to come back out of the hole. As the monkey-catcher approached, the monkey would try to run away, but the coconut would act like a ball and chain, restricting the monkey's movements and making it impossible for it to climb a tree to escape. In fact, all the monkey would have to do was let go of the food in its hand, but it seems that that's something that the monkey was unwilling or unable to do. And so it would be caught, and its freedom - or its life - would be the cost it had to pay. Gospel Teaching Both our first reading and our Gospel today speak of the danger of being trapped like that monkey. The first reading speaks in very poetic language of "nursing" anger and "cherishing" resentment - almost as if these things are precious, like children who need to be cared for. So precious that - like the monkey with its food - we are unable or unwilling to let go of them. In the Gospel, Peter thinks that he is being generous in being prepared to forgive up to seven times. It seems that there was a Jewish tradition that God would forgive three times, and that therefore a person was expected to forgive another person no more than three times. Now Peter wonders if perhaps he should forgive as many as seven times. But he has, once again, got hold of the wrong end of the stick. By asking how many times we should forgive, Peter is trying to quantify how much forgiveness is necessary. It was just the kind of question the Pharisees would ask: How much do I have to do? What is the minimum I can get away with? Jesus' answer - seventy-seven times (in some translations, seventy times seven) - and his parable about the unforgiving servant show that, for him, what is important is not the number of times we forgive; instead he calls us always to be prepared to forgive, to be as generous as we can with forgiveness. For Jesus, forgiveness is not so much about individual acts as a way of life, a mindset guiding all our relations /-\ "Not seven... but seventy-seven tim es." with others. Because we are forgiven by God, so we are called in turn to be prepared to forgive. Forgiveness is freely given to us - a gift, not something we can earn. And so Jesus teaches us to be ready to give it freely - not grudgingly - to others. Application The alternative to forgiveness is to cling on to our hurt, nurse our anger and cherish our resentment. Anger, resentment and revenge may feel the natural, even the right response when someone has seriously wronged or hurt us. But ultimately the only people we punish by refusing to let go of those feelings and attitudes are ourselves. When we refuse to forgive, we are like that monkey - we hold on to our bitterness, our anger, our hurt, and we can't let go, we won't let it drop. But there is a cost to this way of dealing with hurt. It costs us our freedom and it robs us of our life and our peace. We may feel that by holding on to our anger and resentment, we somehow have a hold over the person who has hurt us, perhaps even that we are punishing that person; but the reverse is actually true - we are the ones who are ensnared. Lack of forgiveness weighs us down and traps us. "Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us," we pray each day. In other words, if we do not forgive, then we cannot hope to receive the forgiveness of God. "Remember your last days and set enmity aside," the first reading tells us. That is the only way to be free and to be at peace - not just with our neighbour, but with ourselves and with our God.
