The Lady of Liberty does not only reign over her people but above all, challenges them and everything in her domain. Her’s is a watchful presence over the events taking place everywhere in the world. Ultimately, the whole world looks to America for the solution to its many dilemmas, its problems, the world searches for truth and justice here under Lady Liberty’s magnificent shoulders. Just looking at her and you feel her energy - her committment. You know that she is your intervenor, your protector. Her message demands that you believe in the equality of all men and the right to freedom and justice under God. She challenges us to live that message that is brilliantly symbolized in her open arms. Many of our forefathers remember seeing her when they came to our shores as poor, timid immigrants, full of hope and eager to find their new lives. Did they feel the blessedness of freedom and receive the inspiration she imparts - to be worthy of this blessing? There is no doubt that Lady Liberty called to them in welcome and gave them her approval. Her majestic figure spoke to them eloquently: “Here you are - here you can stay, free, unfettered. I give you new life with great opportunity.” And, to whom has Lady Liberty lifted her flame of light? What is it she wishes to say to us? That a man who is free must be proud - that in the arena of a man’s life he must be a man of the times, not a dreamer of the past, that he must look to the future, always to a better future and find there, his destiny. It is all in her name. The restoration process for the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island brings a re-awakening of patriotism to all American- Slovenians, too. They are sentimental in this respect as we hear from our fine member, Jennie Feme, of Cleveland, Ohio. She lived in Pennsylvania for many years during her childhood and remembers taking lunch to her father who worked in a stone quarry at Forest City. He told her about the work the men were doing to prepare stone for a government project in New York. From the Forest City News we learned the facts that indeed, prove her memory true! In the August 11, 1898 NEWS, appeared the news item as follows: “Contractor Frank Carlucci has secured a big contract from the government to supply cut stone to be used in the erection of the Ellis Island Landing Station in New York harbor. The stone will be taken from the Forest City quarry.” We are all so proud of her father and all the men who worked with him, most of them Slovenian immigrants. Ellis Island is now being restored and will be re-dedicated next year after modernization and rehabilitation for other uses. But, the memory of those historic times and realization remains of how the immigration of Europeans to our American shores, many of them our own grandparents and great grandparents, made America what it is and brings home the importance of preserving all the “relics”, whether they be structures or personal memorabilia. Jennie also recalls that during the 12 year period when she lived in New York, she took'all visitors to see the Statue of Liberty and was always impressed and grateful for the gift of American freedom which The Lady represents. How clear and definite memory becomes when we can look with our own eyes on these reminders of the past. Rev. Athanasius Lovrenčič. O.F.M. A REMINDER In May ol' this year, Fr. Blase Chemazar, our Superior, Fr. Vendelin Spendov, Guardian of Lemont, Illinois Slovenian Custody and 1 were called to attend the Franciscan Provincial Chapter in Ljubljana. It was good to be back in Slovenia again. This gathering was at Brezje. At the end of our meetings, a special event took place. We are reminded every year that on the vigil of the feast of “Marija Pomagaj”, May 24th, to light a candle in our homes. This year, hundreds of pilgrims gathered at Brezje to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia when a resolution was made among Slovenian people, for a special worldwide ceremonious observance. On the vigil, May 23rd, at 7:30 p.m., the Most Rev. Šušter, Archbishop of Ljubljana, was the main celebrant and all three of us from Lemont were concelebrants at Mass, after which there was a procession with the Blessed Sacrament. Il was dark when we came out of the church and people had lighted candles in their hands. Archbishop Šušter, in his talk, underlined the importance of our fidelity to our tradition. In Slovenia we find not only the beauty in nature, but our heritage makes us proud and at the same time obligates us to pass on this beauty of our customs and our spiritual heritage to the next generation. These were the thoughts of the bishop. Then, at 10 o’clock in the evening the same day only the “three Americans” were concelebrants at Mass and at Midnight, the Provincial of Slovenian Franciscans, Fr. Michael Vovk, said his Mass. It was very impressive to see so many gathered around the Blessed Virgin on this occasion; it was uplifting to listen to the songs echoing thru the church. Moments as these we see the rich heritage of our land, the faith of our people, the song of Slovene hearts and the natural beauty of Slovenia. COMMUNITY MOURNS LOSS OF MARY HUTAR ELY, MN - Miss Mary Hutar, recognized throughout the Iron Range of Minnesota for her abilities as a choir director and music choreographer, passed away May 5th, 1986. The funeral was on Friday, May 9th with the church filled with relatives and friends who will miss her very much. She suffered for 8 months before the good Lord took her to His heavenly kingdom. The sanctuary at St. Anthony’s church was filled with priests who con-celebrated the Mass of the Resurrection for our dear Mary. She was recognized by the choirs of St. Anthony’s for 50 years as organist and choir director and for her 50 years as the housekeeper at the rectory. Her beautiful singing voice and her tremendous abilities in the field of music gained for her a reputation far and wide. She often appeared on programs in Chisholm with her groups and directed community sings with her sister, accomplished musician, Catherine Merhar. Of recent memory is her visit to Chicago-Lemont for the SWU Christian Women’s Conference when she led everyone in song at every event. Even at a local restaurant, she and the fifty Minnesota members in attendance sang so heartily that the entire restaurant joined in the singing and applauded after every song. Such was our Mary, always full of life and ready and willing to bring happiness to others. Her musical career began when she was in her teens. Her talents blossomed forth when her father, John Hutar, Sr., purchased an old pump organ from the late Msgr. Joseph F. Buh, a former Ely pastor and one of the great missionaries in Minnesota’s pioneering history. Mr. Hutar thought that perhaps the organ would be of some value to his family of seven active children. Mary assumed the leadership and within a few months, the “Hutar Choir” was formed. This was a highly talented, exceptionally musical family. Mary learned to play the organ and the hymns, classics and Slovenian folk songs burst forth with new vitality. She began to play the organ in the church a year later and continued in that capacity for 44 years. She started out to help in the rectory for about six months when she was 18 years old and she ably continued in that capacity, saying that it just never occurred to her to leave. In addition to the many household duties that are prevalent in a very busy parish, Mary found time to develop her voice and instrumental abilities at Villa Scholastica. She studied constantly and was an avid reader. She found time to direct and participate in community concerts and plays, to direct the choirs of the church and the community, to play for all of the services in church and lo bake cookies for the hungry little children who had a habit of knocking at the back door, knowing that the cooky jar was brimming with delicious treats for them. The blending of beautiful voices for the various choirs did not just happen. Mary was a teacher, a disciplinarian, a strict but understanding musician. With her there were no excuses for skipping choir practice and her product of choir performance was unexcelled. She was a busy, vivacious songbird and community worker and also a member of many fraternal and civic organizations in Ely and the area. Her responsiblities with the rectory and choirs would exhaust almost anyone, but with Mary, there were always extra “golden” moments to help others and to bring a “song to their hearts.”' Mary was awarded the Music and Drama Community Service Award and was a member of the AFU, VFW Auxiliary, Slovenian Women’s Union Br. 23, Men’s Chorus, Ladies’ Octet and organist for 50 years. She taught the Girl Scouts and other teenage girls Slovenian folksongs and was head of the Memories program at the Ely Nursing Home. We extend our sympathies to all of Mary’s friends and join them in praying that God gives Mary many happy musical rainbows in her eternal home. (This report was taken partially from a newspaper story sent to us by her beloved sister, Catherine.) If you are taking a trip or going to some special place, let us hear from you so we may read and enjoy the afterglow. We need to have more such as the article our editor wrote, on her eliinb to Triglav, in April Zarja. The pictures were most interesting, especially to those of us who are not able to get away. This was truly an adventure they shall not forget. Many areas are planning State Conventions within the next few months. Since our National Convention next year is the end of Slate Presidents terms of office, the meetings will be a good lime to give some thought to the selection of new officers in 1987. It is important to have ladies who are potential leaders, interested in promoting the SWU interest and future policies. We have many new officers and new members and I am sure good leaders can be found. Because branches are far apart in some cases, each branch should look for possibilities in (heir own group. Some of our present Stale representatives have expressed a desire to be replaced. I would ask all of our members to give it some thought; let me know how you feel about this. The articles in Zarja by our National Officers and branch reporters interest me; more so, because now I have time to peruse them more thoroughly. Some of our groups have family participation, very important these days when many parents are involved in their childrens’ activities. Let’s invite them to SWU and perhaps give members more incentive to attend meetings and in some cases, enjoy some interesting programs each month. Ladies, read the articles and notice the branches that have growing attendance because something is always going on. I have received a letter from Marion Marolt, our National Auditor, saying she is much improved and looking forward to again participating in branch activity. She is our diligent president of Br. 17. Also, a letter from Anna Pachak informs us that her interest in SWU is strong and unwavering despite her failing health. God bless you both. We wish’the very best to our celebrating members and friends; better health and a bright future for our ailing. Our prayers for our deceased members and Iriends are constant, asking (he Lord to keep them safe in His Heavenly abode. May God Walk Willi You. She never refuses to be of service to her organizations and we are proud of her! Glad to see the hall full again for the occasion. All officers were present except Frances Plesko, our Honorary President who is out of the hospital now and doing very well at home. Reports were all read and accepted. My guest was my sister, Helen Morel, who was touched by the warm reception she received from everyone. ZUPANČIČ NO. 17, WEST ALLIS, WI Now that spring has come and the winter is but a memory, we welcome summer with all its outdoor activities such as family gatherings, bar-beques, picnics or just visiting with friends and enjoying the great outdoors - a lovely time of year. Which brings me to relate the well deserved vacation of our president, Marion Marolt who with her son, Ray, his wife, Linda and Linda’s family flew to sunny Florida. They toured DisneyWorld, visited the Epcot Center, enjoyed the Sea World and did loads of sightseeing. The sunny weather must have agreed with them as they came home with beautiful tans (quite a contrast to my white-ness!). Due to the fact that Marion was out of state and secretary, Joan Yaklich had a committment on May 18th, we postponed our celebration honoring to gatherings of the cadets and all the auditor’s meetings were held (here. Anna always made the coffee and a big sunshine cake for refreshments at our meetings. After she could no longer attend meetings, she would prepare the big pot of coffee for her daughter, Gladys, to deliver. She was an excellent seamstress and donated many hand-made items for prizes as well as contributing generously toward all events sponsored by the swu. In May of 1953 the members elected her Mother of the Year. In 1982 she was honored as a 50 year member and presented with a gift from the Home Office. Anna held the office of Treasurer for 34 years until it was necessary for her to resign due to illness in 1978. In addition to caring for her mother, Gladys, our secretary, also look on Ihejob of Treasurer. Many members recited the Rosary at Anna’s wake at the Kompare Funeral Home. Honorary pallbearers who accompanied her to Holy Cross cemetery were Mary Krznaric, Ana Lustig, Phyllis Perko, Marge Prebil, Sylvia Spretnjak and Fran Zupančič. "Eternal rest grant to her, O Lord, and may the perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace! Thanks in advance. The month of April sure had its ups and downs. Our very active member and avid bowler suffered a heart attack April 3rd and gave us a good scare. But with the fine care of her devoted husband (nurse and friend) she is doing quite well. Many of her activities have been curtailed but she is slowly coming around and attends meetings when she can. Rose, keep up the good work and regain your strength. I’m sure you will be able to resume your activities on a limited basis. On April 18th Frank Vertcnik passed away. He was the brother of our Mother of the Year, Ann Gasparič. Sincere condolences to the Vertcnik and Gasparič families. On April 10th I had the pleasure of attending the Slovenian Folk-tale, “The Escapades of Kurent” at Pitman Theatre of Alverno College. Our prominent Slovenian dancer and choreographer, Isabelle Kralj, staged this wonderful show and did a superb performance as did the enl ire cast. A most enjoyable presentation for all. On Sunday, June 29th the Uspeh organization held a picnic and we all planned on attending. Three great bands were scheduled, the Badger Button Box, Jeff Winard and Hank Magayne for dancing. The “YUGO” car was to be on display then and I’m sure many curious people attended just to see the car! His mother, Margaret, still lives in the homestead on Hutchins near Hickory. His father, John, who worked in the steel mills, is deceased; he has two sisters and one brother. We planned and duly executed the Woman of the Year observance with dinner at Bradley Gardens on May 6th. To our honoree, Anna LaMontagne, congratulations and heartfelt wishes for good health and peace. We salute you as “Woman of All Seasons”, for that you are in the hearts of your family and friends. Anna Jamnik was at the dinner; it was good that she was able to join us. Recognition also went to Mary Rittmanic, our Slovenska “arteest” who was honored along with other artists at a public reception at Olivet Nazarene College in early May. Mary had three paintings on display at the exhibition of their works in the Larsen Fine Arts Center on the campus. Three cheers, Mary, pa nazdravje! The Slovenian picnic will be held in August. Watch for the official announcement in the mail. Well, the Lady of Liberty has a new face-life to the tune of mighty millions, but better still would be a march to the beat of old-fashioned moral values! God bless everyone! WANGLER Reporter NO. 25, CLEVELAND, OH Whenever we meet with the ladies who attended the party at Sterle’s for our Mother of the Year event, we always agree, we had a good time. It was like a big happy family affair. Our honoree, Mary Jean Turk, our spiritual leader a beloved pastor of St. Vitus parish, Rev. Jože Božnar, were entertaining at all the tables; nobody was left out. Mary Jane Timko, daughter of the honoree, presented a beautiful brooch to her mother as a memento of the day and a little recognition for all the love she received thru the years. Once again, we have to say: “It was a great day”! In every life a little rain must fall. Usually it always leaves a lot of sorrow in a lot of families. Our deepest and sincere sympathy to Sylvia Plymesser-Mihevc on the loss of her husband, William H. Mary Vana Zidan and Jennie Laurich also departed from this world. To their families we are saying, deepest symopathy. In July and August we will not have meetings. We will start again in September on the second Tuesday. Danica Chemas will cut the cake on Aug. 8th and of course, to all the ladies who are enjoying their days in these two months: “Happy, happy day and God bless you all”. Enjoy the summer. Swim Party April 25th had 50 having a great time! Plans are being made for a bake sale for November election. Rose Maras, Minnesota State President, was to come to our June meeting. Mary Karich gave another strudel demonstration. Marie Garafalo missed $25 attendance prize and Helen Budmir missed out on $5. In March, Helen Mosack and .losie Rzatkovich showed slides. April program was Dodie Skull with “tips” on cake decorating. The beautifully decorated cake was given off with proceeds of $28 added to the $20 received in donations at the start of “living memorial” for Delores Heski. Anyone wishing to contribute can do so through this reporter or Ruth Boben or Thyra Rukavina, chairmen. We ask prayers for Delores Heski, Madeline Abbott, Dolores Dincau and Mary Giacomini. Our trip to Winnipeg is August 14th. $170 for three nights at Charter House Hotel. Contact Emily. Emily Skull was honored as our Mother of the Year on May 8th. Her husband, John, son, Gerald, his wife, Carla, daughter, Susan, and four grandsons were in attendance. Josie Ratkovich, as mistress of ceremonies, read a tribute to Emily and Carla added a few thoughts from her family. A program by the Claudia Eskola Dancers was enjoyed by all. The “Penny Social” netted $85.25. We were especially pleased to have Delores Heski join us to honor Emily. We know it took an extreme effort for her to be there due to very poor health. We are working on a “living memorial” for Delores and will let everyone know what she decides will be her choice. A big “thank you” again to Renee Doble who turned in $79.95 from sale of the knives. Cash gifts to our branch were received. $10.00 from Mary Bucar. Amelia Thomas gave $25.00 to be used for funeral flowers. We are very appreciative. Congratulations to Bess and Lyle Kenyon who celebrated their 50th Anniversary on May 18th. “Happy Summer” and God be with each and every one of you. LOIS M. PELANDER, Reporter NO. 34, SOUDAN, MN Branch 34 outdid themselves this year in the celebration honoring me as their Mother of the Year. It will be hard to beat! Starting with a delicious chicken dinner, prepared by our members, the evening progressed into something very special. Our National Auditor, Victoria Bobence was mistress of ceremonies and things just moved along. She read the article she had written about me in the ZARJA, then there were comments, followed by a complete surprise visit by my brother, Jack, who sang, accompanied by Tony Poderzay on the accordian and joined in by the rest, a parody of my life, starting with childhood to the present time. Emma Betourne, my sister and member of Br. 34, and another member, Helen Adkisson, used their heads to think up the words — it was hilarious! We had a most impressive candle lighting ceremony, all of us, one at a time, got up and told everyone our mother’s name, how many children there were in the family, then proceed to light a votiv candle which surrounded a statue of the Blessed Virgin. A beautiful fresh bouquet of flowers which had been given to me by my family, the Pavliches, was also by the statue. For the 40 people present 236 children were counted in their families! Fr. LaPatka, our parish priest, showed a video tape on the apparitions taking place at Medjugorje, Croatia. Father will be leaving soon for a trip there and we are most anxious to have him return to tell us about it personally. We welcomed our special guests, Rose Maras, Regional President, Kathy Knuth, Secretary, Anna Hodnik, National Youth Director. Wc appreciated their presence and their messages to us. Another surprise waiting for me that night was having my sister, Agnes and daughter Terese, also members of our branch, appear just before Mass! They drove up from St. Paul for the occasion. My daughter, Monica, and my granddaughter, Gina Pustovar of Hibbing, were also present, which meant a great deal to me. My children presented me with a lovely silk flower centerpiece which was used at the head table. 1 could never thank each and every one enough for this honor, the testimonies, the gifts I received, the planning and working for the dinner, the decorating and the program which made it so successful and a time I will never forget. Another big event in our parish was on Saturday, May 24, when we honored Our Lady of Brezje with an Ethnic Mass, which our priest prefers to call it. Our branch and the KSKJ lodge participated in this together. I served as the Reader, the Poderzay Brothers played their accordians, Dennis Erchul, former parishioner and now of Duluth, played the organ, Diane Childs led us in the singing, Helen Adkisson and Jean Driscoll, officers of the KSKJ and Victoria Bobence representing the SWU, brought up the offertory gifts. Our Blessed Mother’s statue was placed in the sanctuary with a bouquet of red carnations at her feet. After the mass, coffee and apple Greetings from Your Youth Director anna hodnik May has been a busy month with Mother of the Year parties, graduations and First Holy Communions. It was also the month when we were busy selecting the S.W.U. scholarship winners. All the entrant’s resumes were excellent and it was difficult picking the winners. But I felt both the winners and the losers, will succeed in achieving their goals because scholastically they were in the upper one third of their class and all were active in church and community and also, most had some part time job. This makes for a well-rounded student whose potential is the best. 1 want to extend my heartiest congratulations to all who applied. It was a nice surprise to have Fr. John Petrich officiate at the Holy Mass when my granddaughter, Allyson Ferris, made her First Holy Communion. Father Petrich received one of the scholarships offered by the Slovenian Women’s Union a few yeatrs ago. Wouldn’t it be nice if our organization could find more young men and women to become priests and nuns? The Catholic Church is in dire need of religious vocations. It would be nice if all our membership would add this intention to our daily prayer list. I attended a meeting of all the branches in Minnesota where plans were made for the dedication of the Slovenian Miners and Laborers Memorial. We are hoping many of you will plan to be there for this event. It will be a very memorable day and we want to thank Fr. David Stalzer who first recognized the need for this memorial and spearheaded the project and fund raising. May God bless you for your thoughtfulness and dedication. ANNA M. HODNIK potica was served to all. Nick Tekautz led us in singing Slovenian songs, again accompanied by Tony, Tom and Leonard Poderzay. In closing, Sophie Spolar led the group in the recitation of the Litany of the Blessed Virgin in Slovenian, Mary Gornick led us in prayer in Slovenian and we all then sang, Češčena si, Marija. An added delight was Fr. LaPatka playing his concertina for us. It was a great time and everyone enjoyed it - some said they would like to have this every month! Our branch has now recessed for the summer but we are reminded to attend the dedication of the Slovenian Miners and Laborers Tribute on August 1st at Iron World in Chisholm. We will try to be there in our Slovenian costumes to join in the festivities. Also, we are to keep in mind the Minnesota Day planned for Sunday, September 14th in Hibbing. Give me a call if you plan to attend. Have a good summer, everyone! ADELINE MUSTONEN Reporter NO. 35, AURORA, MN The celebration honoring our Mother of the Year, Gudy Luther, was held on Sunday, April 27th at the Holy Rosary Church Hall. Fifty-five members of Gudy’s and Bob’s families were in attendance. Anna Hodnik was Mistress of Ceremonies. She began by telling us a few facts about our organization. President, Anna Rose Smolich presented Gudy and her husband with a corsage and boutonniere and later in the program, presented to our Mother of the Year the book: FOOTSTEPSTHRUTIME. The program was then turned over to granddaughter, Nancy Mar-tinetto. Nancy gave us a history of Gudy’s life and introduced the' members of the family, their spouses and children. Family members were called upon to tell of their special memories of grandmother and mother. Several of them shared their stories, some amusing, some touching. A few lodge members who have known her through the years shared some of their special thoughts. Our Festival Singers and soloist did a beautiful job of singing appropriate songs for Mothers. A delicious lunch was served by hostesses with help from family and friends. They were: Betty Orazem, Helen Zupančič, Carol Ferris, Mary Landgren and Connie Menart. The buffet table was decorated with fresh flowers in shades of pink and rose. It was a special party for a special person and so nice to see all the relatives gathered together. See you at the August 27th luncheon-meeting. DOROTHY CEGLAR, Recording Sec’y NO. 38, CHISHOLM, MN Great month of May! The month that we honor our Mothers and Women of the Year! A luncheon ws held at the Slovenian Home on May 4th honoring the Woman of the Year. Ii was a beautiful day and the attendance was great. The tables were decorated beautifully with colored pussy-willows, pink, napkins and pastel hall decorations. The luncheon consisted of champagne punch, Chicken Supreme, relishes, salad, Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. Head table was decorated with pots of geraniums which were then used as door prizes and given to the oldest mothers present. The program was fantastic. Ann Nusieh was chairperson for the program and did a wonderful job. The singers in their Slovenian costumes really added something to the program. Mike Laurich, our president’s son, did a lovely job playing his accordian. We all had a nice time. Thanks to all who came and many thanks to Jennie and her crew, to Ann Nusieh for the lovely program, to the gals who made the lovely corsages, to Mike Laurich and to all who came and participated. We will not meet until September so Br. 38 wishes all our sisters a wonderful summer and see you then. God bless. ROSE N1EMI NO. 39, B1WABIK, MN Hi, Sisters! Our membership was busy again preparing dinners and desserts for skiers entering the Pepsi Cup Challenge Cross Country Ski Race held in Biwabik on May 7th. St. John’s social hall was the sight of the combined effort of the three local churches in preparing and serving the skiers and spectators. It’s so nice to see all denominations working so well together. Everyone enjoyed the ethnic foods and festivities. Now that the snow is j’one and we’ve said our good-byes go the skiers till next year, our members will begin preparing again for our gala 4th of July celebration. It seems here in Northeastern Minnesota we have two seasons - winter and t he 4th of July! The ladies of Br. 39 helped host a surprise coffee social after Mass on March 25th honorig our supportive pastor, Father Jim Hayden, on his 42nd anniversary to the priesthood. A gift was presented to him from the branch as well as the parish. Congratulations, Father; we think you are great! It was decided at our February meeting to begin fund-raising activities to establish a “slush-fund” for donations to various community groups. Our first event was a “B” parly held at St. John’s on April 13th. Members donated bars, cookies and cupcakes that were sold that evening. Good work, ladies. Donations have been sent to the local PTSA and to the National Ethnic Campaign for Restoration of the Statue of Liberty. Condolences were sent to Marge Dewhurst on the loss of her sister, and to Rosemary Ribich on the loss of her brother, Mark Sertich. Our sympathy to theiir families. On May 4th, 38 members of the Branch attended a dinner at the Rustic Rock Inn in Eveleth. The social hour began at noon and dinner was served at 1:00 p.m. Katherine Stebley, our honored Mother of the Year, was our guest for the dinner. She was presented with a beautiful corsage and a gift. Congratulations, Katty, we’re happy to have you as our Mother of the Year. Our “over age 80” members were also guests of the Branch for dinner. On Mother’s Day, members joined together for the 9:00 a.m. Mass at St. John’s. The Slovenian Women’s Union colorful banner was displayed on the altar and our Mother of the Year, Katherine Steblay, along with the officers of the Branch, brought the gifts to the altar. Have a good summer, ladies. See you at Zveza Day. ROSEMARY RIBICH NO. 40, LORAIN, OH Our April meeting was well attended with 17 members present and after business matters were taken care of, we sang Happy Birthdy to our birthday girls: Angela Kozjan, 85 years young, Genevieve Wenzel and Tricia Russ. A delicious dessert lunch was served. Door prize donated by Kathy Russ was won by Angie Martin. Thanks to Mary Koziura for her generous donation to our Treasury. Good recovery to Angie Zgonc aftet surgery. For Joe and Mary Matos, an unforgettable pleasure - the marriage of their grandson, Capt. Douglas is a F-4 pilot in the U.S. Marines and is stationed at Beaufort, S.C. where they will make their home after honeymooning in St. Thomas. A lot of happiness to the newlyweds. Now for our May meeting and our special gathering to honor our Mother of the Year, Agnes Tomazin. On May 8th we gathered at German’s Villa on the Lake for our dinner, a lovely place and good food, and very good company: 18 members and 3 guests which included Agnes’ daughters, Francie and Sylvia Amolsch and daughter-in-law, Joyce. Agnes looked lovely in a red and white outfit and a corsage to match. She was so happy. After reading of poems, gifts were presented. May you always be as happy, Agnes, as you were that evening. God love you and may your reign be happy . Then our meeting on May 14th. Very few present but business conducted as usual. Birthday girls were Jean A. Balogh and Alice Rutar. Door prize was donated by Jean and won by Annette Sep-taric.Many thanks to all who donated prizes and Agnes Tomazin for baking. On the sick list is Mary Hočevar. Hurry and get better! Now it’s lime again for the International Festival herein Lorain, a lime of great planning and a good time - with the naming of the International Princess, representing the various nationalities in our community. This year, the Slovenian princess is Dawn Marie Glavan, granddaughter of our own Joe and Molly Glavan. She is sponsored by the Slovenian Heritage Association and Helen Urbas. Dawn Marie graduated in June from Marion L. Steele High School in Amherst. She is very happy about her Slovenian heritage - by the way, her favorite food is Rižot! Good luck, Dawn Marie, and may you be our International Princess this year! At the May crowning at St. Anthony’s church we saw our newest member, Tricia Russ, placing the flower crown oil the statue of the Blessed Mother. There was a four picture spread in the daily paper. Tricia is a very active young lady in our school and church. Her parents are Bob and Kathy Russ, also a member, and she is the granddaughter of the late Frances Russ, a member for many years. I will close with this little verse: TIME Time is Too slow for those who wail, loo swift for those who fear, loo lonn for those who grieve, too short for those who rejoice. Cleveland, Ohio NO. 41, CLEVELAND, OH Start with a beautiful day which began with a truly most inspiring mass by Fr. Victor Tome, assisted by songs from a choir that was joyful and brought back happy memories -add the loving support of all the branches of the Slovenian Women’s Union and the true caring support of family and friends and you have the background of the most deserving tribute of appreciation and praise that was held on May 18th to honor a lovely lady, our dear Cecelia Wolf. They are Julia Tavzel who was escorted by her son from Texas, Josephine Fier, Antonia Ogrin, Anna Skok, Marion Rolih, Katherine Gregorincich, Frances Karis who was unable to attend but her family came to accept her 50 year honors for her. Josephine Bonach also could not be there but her tribute was sent to her. She sent in a generous donation to the branch. A thank-you to her! We were especially touched that Katherine Gregorincich was present. She suffered a sad tragedy. In a recent auto accident in Indiana her grandson was injured and his wife and two children were killed. Everyone extended their deepest sympathy to her. It was all of these honorees who did so much to build the strong foundation of the S.W.U. and our congratulations to all of them. Kovačič CUTTING THE COST OF SUMMER VACATION For those of you who are currently making vacation plans and wish to make this trip economical, read on! If you already have a vacation planned or have returned from one feeling rejuvenated, use these tips in the future or tell someone else about them. People have a tendency to either want to do what is the popular or “in season” activity, or to take the less traveled path and go to a ski resort in mid-summer. I enjoy one or the other as long as there are bargain possibilites. If you want to save about 50 per cent of what you would pay in winter on airfare and hotel rates, take a summer trip to the Caribbean. The difference in temperature will be unnoticeable, and you could come back with more cash left over than expected. If your perfect idea of vacation is to be active outdoors in hiking, boating, biking, swimming and tennis activities, a ski resort will offer lower room rates in summer. This is an advantage if you hate mobs of people; just relax and soak in the peaceful serenity of nature. If you plan to be vacationing near a national park, investigate hotels run by the National Park Service which offer lower hotel rates, but remember to make reservations well in advance. If you travel with children under 18, look for hotels and motels which offer special deals for people with children. Also investigate bed and breakfast places; they are a growing business in the U.S. The most economical accomodations of course, are with family and friends while you are away, so stay in touch with people from other localities. If you don’t mind booking a vacation two weeks or less in advance, there are bargains on cruises and airline seats which can be sold to you for less, a week or so before departure. Additionally, scan classified ads for people selling discount air tickets. There are honest individuals who are members of “ frequent flyer programs” willing to sell you their less expensive tickets. Research the possibility of fly-drive packages where you buy an airline ticket and rent a car for free or less. If you are not interested or have a tight schedule, there is no need to venture far from home. Take day trips to places that you have not had the time to visit in the past. There are boundless possibilities to cut your travel costs. My favorite way of attaining information is to browse through travel manuals in book stores, or to visit the local library and study travel guides. Another alternative is to visit several travel agents and ask questions; they are usually filled with suggestions and ideas since good agents are experienced travelers themselves. Talk to people wo have traveled to places you would like to visit. An accumulation of facts and advice on traveling will be beneficial to your personal travel experience. A happy summer to all! A message of congratulations and love came from Jos. Klemenčič and his wife, Irene, with regrets that they could not share this day with their favorite aunt. Their daughter was graduating from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Cecelia Wolf has worked diligently to keep Br. 41 active. When a partial list of the many offices she has held was read, it was noted that many positions were not just for one semester, but for many years. She is active in church, in cultural groups and singing societies, and has been with a number of women’s auxiliaries that required hard work as do her many secretarial offices. She is a serene person and to be with her is a pleasure. Her willing help to Slovene Home for the Aged for many years has helped them attain the enviable position they enjoy. Hodnik: Learn Slovenian! I was invited to the dinner party honoring Mother of the Year, Adeline Mustonen of Br. 34, Soudan, MN. It was a wonderful celebration for a beautiful and dedicated mother. Sophie Spolar, a member of Br. 34, contributed this lovely prayer for our column this month. Thank you, Sophie, for sharing it with us. My aunt and uncle, Mary and Peter Spolar, adopted me when I was 3 months old. They taught me the Slovenian language, prayers and all of Ihe customs of their homeland. When I saw this prayer in the KSKJ Glasilo newspaper, it brought back inaiiy fond memories of my late adoptive parents. Because my uncle taught me to say (his prayer every night before I went to bed, and I know many others of Slovenian descent know it, too, I think it would be nice to have you print it in the ZARJA-THE DAWN. Sophie Spolar In English We show devotion by praying to our Guardian Angels: ’’Angel of God, my guardian dear. To whom God's love commits me here, Ever this day be at my side, To light, to guard, to rule, to guide. AMEN. ” In Slovenian Našim angelom varuhom izkazujemo zaupanje in hvaležnost, ko jih vsak dan v molitvi prosimo: "Sveti angel varuh moj, bodi vedno ti z menoj, stoj mi noč in dan ob strani, vsega hudega me brani. ” 55th Anniversary of Br. 50 On October 26, 1986, in conjunction with the Ohio-Michigan Station Convention, Br. 50, Cleveland, Ohio, will observe the 55th Anniversary of its founding. There will be a Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church on Holmes Avenue followed by the Convention Meeting at the Church Hall. At 3 p.m.,a Dinner will be served at the Slovenian Home on Holmes Avenue. All Branches, please keep this date in mind and plan on attending. We welcome you and look forward to this memorable event. Ann Tercek, Regional President MEET ANITA VOVK, OUR SLOVENIAN LANGUAGE TEACHER “Dober dan!” “Knjiga je črna!” “To je prvi tečaj slovenščine!” These phrases echoed through the improvised classroom in Antia Vovka’s home in Aurora, Minnesota, each Wednesday morning from October through May. They flowed, sometimes not too fluently,, from the mouths of the members of Anita’s beginners’ Slovenian language class. Anita, a member of Br. 35 and wife of Frank Vovk, is of Italian descent, but she fell in love with all things Slovenian on her visits with her husband’s family in Slovenia. She prepares Frank’s favorite Slovenian foods expertly, sings in the Slovenian Choir at Holy Rosary Church and is knowledgeable about many customs and arts, being the owner of a large collection of Slovenian artifacts. She is also becoming proficient in the language, having studied for five years with Mrs. Ann Tushar of Gilbert, Minn. In fact, Anita has become the chief correspondent in the family, writing to and translating the letters that conic from Frank’s family in Slovenia. Frank’s mother says she wouldn’t hear any news if it weren’t for Anita! So good-hearted as she is, Anita volunteered to share her knowledge with us, some of her SWU sisters. Some of us had just returned from Slovenia and were anxious to be able to correspond with relatives we met there. Some students are planning trips and others of us simply have an interest in learning the language of our forefathers. In addition to the language lessons, some of the class time is given over to discussion of the customs, history, corrent way of life, etc. in Slovenia. The highlight of the year was the last class meeting a luncheon to which were invited guest speakers to share their experiences in the post WWII years in Slovenia. We learned so much from them! We feel we arc really learning to appreciate our Slovenian heritage as we know more about our “second country”. Every session was a joy and we look forward to next year’s classes. Najlepša hvala, Anita! Si dobra učiteljica! NO. 42, MAPLE HGTS., OH My Mother of the Year I would like to share with all of you a brief description of the most wonderful woman in my life. Too many years, triumphs, and failures have passed without my voice rising to praise the one person who knew me long before I knew myself. It may be that just becoming a mother has opened my eyes to the thousands of minor sacrifices which must have been endured to keep our family happy. I don’t know even now if 1 could have supplied the courage and stability that was given by my mother through the deaths of my brother and father. I do see my mother every day, although thousands of miles separate us. I see her in my memories and through myself, as 1 begin to guide my own family in our long journey through life. 1 hear her voice when I say things and see her actions as I move. All these things guide my life and my family in a direction which I know has been tread before by a powerful and thoughtful woman in her never tiring and unselfish quest of family. I can only hope that my quest will direct my family as truly. The task is now mine, for I have passed the time of student. I am honored and proud to have had the training I did by not just a Mother of the Year, but a Mother of Many Years and Generations to Come. THANK YOU, MOM. She would have been a 50 year member in 1987. To her family we extend our deepest sympathy and may she rest in peace. The charter was draped in her memory and a prayer concluded the meeting. Lunch was served by hostesses, Mary Massich, Ann Voiovich and Rose Vukich. Cards were played and winners were Ann Pintar, Mary Sikich and Amelia Domen. Best wishes to all and a speedy recovery to the sick. The May meeting was opened by a prayer. Reports were read and accepted. A letter was received telling about the dedication of the Miners and Laborers Memorial sponsored by the Slovenian people which will be on August 1st, 1986 in Chisholm. They would like as many Slovenians there as possible. There will be a charge at the gate. Tickets for prizes were on hand for members to sell for the state convention. Banquet tickets were donated by Homer Bar and carried their ad. Sandy Matezevich was reported sick. Emma Petrich received her 50 year pin. It wa nice to see Mary Putzel at our meeting. Thanks, Carol, for bringing her. The president asked that all donations of gifts for the state convenetion be brought to the August meeting. Also, thanks to the Range Polka Club for changing their dale which coincided with our station convention date of Sept. 24th. Birthdays were recognized for May, June and July - Happy Birthday to all! Sophie Garmaker, our Mother of the Year, was presented a corsage and gift from the branch. Special prize winner was Mary Drobnick. Our meeting was closed with a prayer remembering Mary Hutar of Ely and Julia Prosnik of Chicago, daughter of our member, Emma Kozak. May they rest in peace. A delicious lunch was served in honor of the Mother of the Year with tables decorated with spring flowers. Cards were played and winners were Mary Babich, Mary Magajna and Barbara Dosen. Hope to see you all at our Minnesota Day, Sept. 14th. God bless you all. ANNE SATOVICH Reporter NO. 57, NILES, OH On April 8th we met at the home of our president, Frances Yerrnan for our meeting with a fair attendance. We hope to see more mnembers at the meetings as the weather now is nice and we only meet once a month. So, do try to come out and help us discuss and plan for future meetings. At our meeting we completed our plans for the Mother’s Day luncheon on May lath. We had some very sad news to report at the meeting as we had lost one of our members, Rose Spirko, a long-time member. She is survived by a son and his family. Our sympathy goes out to them. We also received a new member to our club; she is Rebecca, daughter of Nancy Zevkovich Lambert. We just got word that Nancy gave birth to a sister for Rebecca who we hope will also become a member soon. Jerry Spoljaric is now home after having hip surgery. Ladies, give her a call and let her know you are thinking of her. Nancy Segreto was also in the hospital. Our get-well wishes go out to all our sick members and wises to them for a speedy recovery. Kindly let us know if anyone is on the sick list as there are times when we do not hear about them. We do like to keep in touch and pray for a speedy recovery to all. Our meeting was closed with playing “B” and were served a delightful lunch by Mary Young, Carol Naley and Phyllis Muccio. Our May meeting was our Mother’s Day Luncheon held at the El Rio at 1 p.m. with 20 members present. Later we held a short meeting honoring our Mother of the Year, Frances Racher. We decided not to have a meeting in the months of June and July as some of our members will be away on vacation and many will have graduations and weddings to attend. We will meet again in August with a Covered Dish Picnic at the home of our president, Frances Yerman. We each received lovely favors made by a friend. We played games and everyone went home with a gift. Birthdays celebrated in May were Jane Logar and Frances Yerman. See you all at the picnic. Good luck to all. FRANCESSTANEC NO. 59, BURGERTTSTOWN, PA Hello to all! Is the summer keeping you busy? Having cookouts, escaping on a get-away vacation or just enjoying the sunshine? Our April meeting was held at the home of Mary Dvoršak with 17 members attending Mary is recuperating from a recent illness. She enjoyed our visit. Thanks for having us. Mary and her daugher, Betty, gave 2 special prizes that were won by Frances Korošec and Jennie Ferbežar. 15 members came to the May meeting. The special was won by Ann Secan and given to Rosemary. Hilda, Genia, Elsie and Jennie enjoyed the performance of Charley Pride’s “Country Trivia” at the Jamboree U.S.A. in Wheeling, W. Va. A Cape May seashore vacation was taken by Frances K., Jennie, Elsie and Genia. They enjoyed a 5 day stay. Fran M., Evelyn and Thelma went by bus to Bellview, Ohio to see the Mother of Sorrowful Shrine. Kimberlee and friends went to Cedar Point in Ohio, Jamboree in the Hills in Wheeling and to Detroit, Michigan As you see, some of our members enjoyed a summer time vacation. How was your 4th? Did you start off with a picnic for family and friends and ended it with fireworks? Stay well and happy. ROSEMARY NO. 73, WARRENSVILLE HTS., OH The good ole summertime is rapidly growing to a close. Did you do all the things you planned to do this year? It’s almost time to start thinking about raking leaves and starting Christmas projects. Our fiftieth jubilee, now a thing of the past, was so beautiful. The day, though interrupted by a rain storm, was delightfully cool and pleasant. Our anniversary mass was well attended. A tribute to Branch 73 made everyone aware of our strong Christian ties and our recognition of sisterhood. All the glory of Easter Sunday was still present on the altar, adding to our joy. The dinner that followed was delicious. A special thank you to Ann DeNallo and her crew for a job well done. The music, furnished by Buddy Herak and his Tamburitzans, gave a special aire to our celebration. And, our members, our loyal, beautiful members! We could not have accomplished it all without you. Our sister lodges who joined us in celebration, THANK YOU! And our gratitude to all the branches who took time to send notes of congratulations and encouragement. We were privileged to present eight fifty year pins for membership. We are sorry all of these members could not be with us - you missed a wonderful celebration. Our prayers were with you. Twenty-eight deceased members were remembered in a brief, touching memorial. God keep you in His care for all you did in the years you served. A highlight of the day was recognition of Jack and Ann Yane on their sixtieth wedding anniversary. Ann is our past-president. Their daughters, Gloria and Pat, along with their spouses were also in attendance at the Mass and dinner. Our best wishes to the Yanes for continued good health. OUR SYMPATHY: to Bernice Blatnik on the passing of her uncle, John Micklaus. John was also the brother of the late Mox Micklaus, our music man. To Ann Modic on the demise of her 34 year old son-in-law. To Joe and Jean Fortuna on the loss of his mother, Mary. CONGRATULATIONS: Sorrow mixed with joy - we offer our best wishes to the Fortunas whose daughter, Jane Marie, was married May 24th at St. John Nepomocene church to Philip DeMattia. To Kathryn Papez, now great grandma to a new great granddaughter, Morgan Ashby - another baby to love to pieces! To Betty and Bill Drnak whose daughter, Mary Lou was promoted to the rank of Major at a ceremony in the Penatgon. You have every right to be proud. To Florence and Andy Duale, Florida residents, who will return to Ohio to celebrate their Fiftieth Anniversary on August 24th. To Pete and Kay Yuratovac who will mark 45 years of marriage. To Frances Cazin on being our other of the Year and thank you to her two daughters who attended our meeting to surprise their mother, and to her grandson who kept us all in conversation. August 31st, my husband, Steve, and I will mark 40 years of marriage. It is hard to put into words all that we have to be thankful for. For myself, I am grateful for a husband who is a good cook, an excellent shopper, an understanding father, for a husband who has been at my side thru many trials and tribulations, who has seen me thru many personal problems, who has been with me “in sickness and in health”, who gives me encouragement (with a sprinkling of criticism) and without whom I could not accomplish all the things that I manage to undertake. I love you, much! Don’t forget our cookout, August 25th at the Eply Residence. Fun starts at 6:00 p.m. Bring a dish -meat, salad, bakery, vegetable - your choice - for the buffet. See you then. Respectfully submitted, EVELYN MAJERCIK NO. 8L, KEEWATIN, MN Our Mother of the Year celebration was held on May 4th and according to the decision of a previous meeting, instead of honoring one member, we honored all the members as most of them were previously honored as “Mothers of the Year”. The members attended the 10:30 Mass in a group. It was celebrated by Father Thomas Foster. The organist and soloist was Mary Spolarich who sang “Angelsko Češčenje”. A delicious breakfast catered by members of the Senior Citizens was served to the members at the Senior Citizen Center. The tables were decorated with bouquets of spring flowers. Josie Kapla decorated a cake for the special occasion. Guests at the breakfast were: Father Thomas Foster, Mrs. Rose Maras, Minnesota President of S.W.U. and Mrs. Lois Neff. A short meeting was held afterward at which time a letter from the Home Office was read urging all the branches to send delegates to the dedication of the Miners Memorial in Chisholm August /st. President, Josie Kapla attended a meeting of all presidents in Eveleth for the combined Minnesota branches to discuss this event to be held at Iron World U.S.A. Another item discussed was formulating new guidelines for future State Presidents to follow. We hope you all have a pleasant and enjoyable summer. Respectfully, MARY MICHEL1CH NO. 89, OGLESBY, IL Our April 14th meeting was presided by Rose Ann Prey, president. The Mother-Daughter Banquet was discussed with Mary Kernz, Chr. and Rose Ann Prey, assisting her. The banquet was to be held at the Fireside on May 12th. Emma Folty, our treasurer, was c hosen for our Mother of the Year and she was honored at the Banquet. Anna Krancic celebrated her 93rd birthday this month. Our Sunshine Chr. Helen Komater celebrated a birthday, too. Happy Birthday! A few of our members have been sick. Hope they are on the mend. Angie Nico and Frances Rolando had the flu and Frances Gorišek injured her foot. Hope to see you all soon, ladies. Anne Batty, Rose Kellett and Pamela Skoporc served refreshments and awarded all present with gifts. Our Mother and Daughter banquet was held on May 12th at The Fireside in Oglesby. The members and guests all enjoyed the festivities. Emma Folty was honored as our Mother of the Year and Rose Ann Prey presented her with a lovely bouquet of red carnations. Frances Gorišek led the members and guests in song. All of the songs honored Mothers. Flowers were presented to the oldest mothers who were Irene Peterlin and Josephine Morrison. The youngest mothers were Holly Folty and Lorene Munson. Birthday wishes were given to Fran Morrison and Rena Rygalski, guests of our members. Our Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Denis Mackessy, spoke on the Slovenian heritage and how proud we should be of our immigrant parents who, through hardships, still kept their faith strong. “B” was enjoyed and prizes were awarded to all winners. The list being too long, we are unable to have all the names in this report. See you soon. EUNICE KOMATER NO. 92, GUNNISON, CO Spring has finally come to Gunnison and with it, many activities that keep us all busy. The Mother’s Day luncheon, honoring Barbara “Bunny” Spritzer, was on May 4th, a week before Mother’s Day so you could spend the day with your families. Fran Austin hosted a luncheon at a Chinese restaurant for the officers and me. Rita Bartelli and Audrey McKnight were in attendance for further discussion of plans for the luncheon. Other business was also discussed. Thanks, Fran, for your generosity. We were saddened this past week by the deaths of Margaret Depew’s infant grandson and Evelyn Mraule’s mother, Mary Sedmak. Our sympathies and prayers are extended to the families. Elsie Massaro and I did not attend the last meeting because we had gone to Nucla to an Altar and Rosary district meeting with Father Ven-denberg. Betty Stefanic did the reporting for me. During the meeting our future meetings were finalized for hostesses. We congratulate Bunny on her selection as Mother of the Year. She has five children and is active in other organizations as well. She is a hard working, talented person, but above all is a caring person. She is an example of mothers looking younger every year. The mystery box was won by Betty Stefanic. It was donated by Elsie Massaro. The high score went to Frances Guerrieri and the low score to Betty Stefanic. Refreshments were served by Audrey McKnight and Beth Weaver. Thank you, Audrey, for the use of your beautiful home. The Gunnison River Inn was (he setting for the Mother’s Day Luncheon on May 4th at 1:00 p.m. Fran Austin, president, worked hard in getting the luncheon set up; it was beautifully done. Elsie Massaro and Fern White took care of the door prizes and checking in the members and guests. Twenty-one members and guests were present. Rose Carricato and Frances Guerrieri made the nut cups. Fran Austin introduced the officers; then each member introduced herself and her guest and Margaret Malenšek offered the opening prayer. After the meal, Linda Mikus crowned the Mother of the Year, Bunny Spritzer. The crown, covered with yellow daisies, was created by Audrey McKnight. A corsage ws also presented to Bunny. A reading entitled, Mother was read by Audrey McKnight and several taped Slovenian songs were played by Frances Somrak. Although we didn’t understand all of the words, the music was enjoyed by all. Fran read a letter from Frieda Forcier who was unable to be with us this year. Unfortunately, she was called to Seattle because of her mother’s illness. Maybe next time. The door prizes were given out and Bunny was presented with the tulip centerpiece which was made by Fran Austin. Fran thanked us for our attendance and we planned to get together in June, in spite of the many activities that come up in summer. Thanks to all the members for making this a memorable affair. FRANCES SOMRAK NO. 95, CHICAGO, IL Before we enter into the summertime and all of us scatter to our various summertime places and activities, I just want all of our members to note that we will no longer have our meetings in the evening, starting Wednesday, Sept. 10th. From then on, our meetings will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon. The change was made at our April meeting with 34 members attending. Mark your calendars now. We also welcomed two new members, Josephine Bruzdzinski and Mary Michalek. Hostesses and goodies by: Lottie Brkljacich, Mary Nuzda, Bernice Morrison, Julie Hansen, Annie Brkljacich, Helen Golich and Ann Granich. Mary Brozynski was our winner of the yearly dues. I would like to add that Mary has always performed with seriousness, attended our meetings regularly and has a deep concern for the welfare of our branch. Congratulations, Mary! In conclusion, I want to thank all of you very much for your outstanding response on the time change for our meetings and may we continue to grow in membership and also inspire others who are not members as yet to come and join us. Have a fun and safe summer. PEACE! Rose Winters It is with deep regret that I announce the death of a member, Rose Winters. Despite her illness she was a dedicated wife to her husband, Rudolph, a woman who loved to be with her family. The character of the life she lived might be summed up in a few words: sincerity, earnestness and loyalty. Her genial personality and the generous instincts of this fine woman will be missed not only by her husband and her family but by all of us in the branch. All of us extend to Rudolph and family, our deepest sympathy. MILDRED JAMES NO. 102, WILLARD, VVI After a lingering illness, we lost Elsie Perko, a valued member of our group. She was 63 and lived in Willard. The SWU said the Rosary at her wake. Elsie wa a devoted and tireless worker and will leave a gap that cannot be filled. In spite of our severe winter the Valentine Party was well-attended and a happy group shared a pot-luck meal, a Valentine exchange, the usual social hour with games. Farmers in the area are still trying to salvage the corn that remains in the wet fields while ladies’thoughts and hands are turning to house-cleaning and gardening. A goodly variety of seedlings, bulbs and house plants swelled our treasury by fifty dollars and fifty cents at our plant sale at the parish center on May 4th, following a pot-luck meal at noon attended by twenty-six members. Prizes were won by Helen Perko (hand-woven rug), Ida Plautz (butterflies), Jean Govek (heart-shaped pin) and Jo Bayuk (bag of walnuts). An honored, long-term member, Mrs. Anna Volovsek, now has forty-two grandchildren and seventy-five great grandchildren! Our group has been saddened by the loss of a valued member, Elsie Perko, who died recently following a lingering illness. Her faithful attendance and help are missed by all of us. No final decision has been made on the plans to make a Slovenian quilt containing fifty-two embroidered blocks. Discussion led by Pres. Jo Artac was tabled until later. Everyone enjoyed the meal and the service was good. Our waitress had her work cut out for her and she was so cheerful and very efficient. Our June meeting was ai the home of Ann Lindich and we hoped to see many members in attendance. Happy birthday to our members during th-; summer months. May our members everywhere have a healthy, happy and safe summer. May God keep watch over one and all. ANN POBANZ DOPISI ŠT. 10, CLEVELAND, OH Drage članice. Smo že v najlepšem mesecu maju, ko to pišem. Res je lepa in kratka zelena pomlad. Ti dve sta nam bili zelo blizu: ga. Bili sta nekaj časa skupaj z mamo Hrastar, nakar so jo premestili drugam. V rojih so obkolili Turke in jih neusmiljemo začeli pikati. S tem so napodili Turke v beg in kristjani so bili rešeni. V zgodovini zadnjega stoletja so mnogi Slovenci iskali svoj dom v “Novem Svetu” in s tem ustanovili svoje družine v Ameriki. Prvo so uradnice prečitale poročila prejšnje seje. POT LANU DO PL A TNA Ljudske šege in navade dandanes zgubljajo nekdanjo moč in prilubljenost po vseh predelih zemlje, kjer živi slovenski narod. Vabili so žene-terice od blizu in daleč.
