SOURCE OF OUR JOY
Christmas Is the source of real joy. Angel of the Lord said to the shepherds:	“I	bring you good news
of great joy which shall be to all the people, for in the town of David a Savior has been born to you, who Is Christ the Lord.” With increasing maturity our thoughts should turn more frequently to the cause of our joy, the Child of Bethlehem whose birthday is Christmas. As we adore Jesus and visit the crib it should be clear to us that after all, joy is purely a spiritual thing and should center entirely around our Lord, Who is the cause of our joy. If He had not come there would be no joy In the world at all. Just as the sun is the source of all heat, so is Christ the source of all joy.
The terms under which he gives Himself are willingness to sacrifice, readiness to leave everything behind and follow Him, to fulfill the will of His Father no matter what It might cost.
Mary and Joseph must leave their home before they can see Christ's face. The shepherds must leave their fires, their accustomed places in the country, the routine and habits of years, if they are to find Jesus and their joy. The Magi are rich and yet something is wanting to their happiness. It almost seems as if God makes them work hardest of all. They must organize a caravan and traverse many foreign lands in their search for Christ. But never was so much given for so little. They have our Lord as their reward. They take Him from the arms of His mother and hug Him for themselves. This is the God they looked for, they searched for. They love Him and He loves them. And so they are perfectly happy.
He is also the real source of our Christmas joy and everything else is only a symbol. Christmas is something to us only then when we put the Christ Child into it. Then the spirit of Christmas is peace, the joy of Christmas Is God become man, the beauty of Christmas is the Virgin and the promise of Christmas is life everlasting. May the Christ Child shower you with all these blessings this Holy Season. Merry Christmas to all!

ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. — Hello gals. It’s that time of the year when our annual meeting will be held. Remember the date, Dec. 17th at 2 p. m. at the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Church Hall. Christmas program will follow and refreshments will be served. Each gal Is asked to bring a 50 cent exchange gift. Let’s make this a good turn out for the last meeting of the year 1967.
Our member, Mary Champa, who had surgery some time ago is now in Madison, Wis. at the University Hospital for surgery. Sylvia Drezler, Ursula Marver, Mary Breznik and Josephine Prisland have been hospitalized some time ago and are back home again. Make a visit to the sick or drop a card which they will deeply appreciate.
Condolences to the family of Mary Stermec who is survived by husband, daughter and many friends; also to the family of Christine Planton who passed away recently and Is survived
by husband, a son, a daughter, seven grandchildren, relatives and many friends.
To all our Zveza members I wish a very Merry Christmas and a very Prosperous and Happy New Year. May the good Lord bless you all in every way.

No. 2, Chicago, 111. A very sincere wish to all our members for a happy and blessed holiday this year of 1967.
With the years rolling by so fast, we can hardly believe that it will soon be 1968. It will certainly be an important and meaningful year for us with the commemoration of the Centennial of Bishop Baraga and the Fund Drive for the Slovenian Chapel at the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Washington, D. C. Both will be historic successes if we put our efforts into them.
A reminder to all that we have our annual Mass in honor of the de-
parted and living members of Br. 2 on Sunday morning, Dec. 17th at 8 p. m. at St. Stephen church. Please try to attend and join us at the front pews of St. Stephen’s. That afternoon, we shall delight our junior members with a gala party at 2 p. m. at the Gym Hall. All members under 10 years of age will receive beautiful gifts under the direction of Treasurer. Liz Zefran. There will be plentiful refreshments, so all adult members are invited to attend as well. This year we hope to make It a “Junior Appreciation” party with our youngsters each invited to show their talents in music, dance, singing, acting, or in showing their hobbies. Letters have gone out to each junior asking him or her to participate and we hope they will, 100 percent.
The annual meeting, members, will be Dec. 14 at which time we shall hold election of officers and selection of Mother of the Year. Please be present. The Secretary is very happy with the response to her last reminder for payment of dues — please do try to bring in or send your 1967 payments so she can close the books in good order. No. 6, Barberton, Ohio — With the soon closing of the year 1967, the 40th year anniversary of our organization was most successful, with highlights being the National Convention In Washington and our State Convention In various sections.
Branch #6 is very happy to report that a successful State Convention was held Sept. 24 and we owe Mary Bostian, Ohio-Michigan State President, many thanks for all her endeavors in bringing a large group by bus, the new combined Glee Club (they were very good) and for conducting the nice memorial services we had for our departed members. Thanks to all the branches that attended from Cleveland, Lorain, Warren, Kenmore and especially to Detroit for coming the long distance.
Praises and thanks to our two new members, Emma Straub for her lovely floral contributions on the church altar and dinner tables; and Jeanette Judy should be complimented for her nice style of decoration. Heard many nice comments on this.
Thanks to all the ladies for baking, bringing door prize donations; to our bartenders, cleaning crew, our cooks for the delicious meal; Father Praznik, Vincent Lautar, the M.C.; Michael Judy, Suzan Praznik, Moliie Zahoryin, Frances Gerhardt for their entertainment on the program; to all the officers who worked so hard to make this truly our biggest event. Hearty thanks to all.

Supreme President’s Message
The glorious month of December is here and in a few days, the climax of the year of 1967. For some it has been a wonderful year, while for others, one of sorrow. Practically everyone will be busy with last minute shopping and preparing for this grand day of Christmas. Families will be together partaking of all the goodies and exchanging of gifts.

New Era Campaign
How are we doing on our Campaign? Have any of you brought in new members? To date we have not done very well in securing new members. Maybe the idea of having a “guest night” when each member brings a non-member would be inspiring for some branches.
Some of the guests usually become interested in joining and behold — a new member is yours! Juniors can join for only 10 cents per month and be insured for $100 — their policies in effect until age 25.
Interest your young people to join!
The Slovenian Women’s Union 14th National Convention in May of this year made history! It was one of the best and largest ever held by our organization and a living memory to all who attended.
All State Conventions held this year have also been very successful due to active state presidents, and the interest of the members.
Election of officers will be held this month among the branches when some officers will retain their posts and others will be replaced.
I	wish all branches and their leaders a successful year 1968!

No. 2, Chicago, III. Bowling News —
October was a. good month for Marquette Service Station, who rose to the top of the standings in the Chicago S.W.U. bowling league. The team won 12 games, while losing only 3 during the month, to give them a record of 20 wins and 10 losses.
As of Oct. 31, Reliance Federal and St. Paul Federal were tied for second place with 18 wins and 12 losses. Close behind were Wagner’s Bakery (17-13) and John F. Cuneo (16-14).
Individual leaders remained the same, but team handicap scores reached a new high. Marquette Service Station took over the lead in high team series with 2829 and Zefran Funeral Home now leads in high team game with 1014.
K. Esposito and M. Taroli were two of our bowling stars in October. They each bowled a 222 game. Other star bowlers were: H. Drbec, 219; J. Ger-vase, 218; M. Stuck, 217; M. Persa. All the above scores include handicap.

No. 20, Joliet, III. — Slovenian Women’s Union Bowling News. After eight weeks of bowling, we find Northwest Recreation Club in first place with 19 wins and only 5 losses. These gals are really bowling. In second place is American Slovenian Home with 13% wins and 10% losses. Merichka’s is third with 11% wins «.nd 12% losses. Dames Funeral Home is fourth with 10 wins and 14 losses. Fighting for last place are Bluth’s Sausage and Shep’s DX Service Station with 9 wins and 15 losses each.
On Oct. 2nd, Marge Gasperich shot a 573 (156-196 and 222) and a week later, Marje Wajchert shot a 572 (209-164-199). Nice bowling, gals. Mary Lou Bluth (average 136) shot a 522 series (184-150-189). Nice going, gal. Dot Jaksetich had two 500’s this month, 52)0 and a 526. Vicki Bernickas had a 503 series.
The high team game is 794, held by Shep’s DX Service Station and the high team series is 2196 held by Northwest Recreation Club.
We lost two of our bowlers because of illness, Theresa Papesh and Ann Papesh. We want to welcome our two new bowlers Gen Klainsek and Beverly Zaletal.

YOUNG PUEBLO SOPRANO
Mary Therese Karlinger was born on June 14, 1949 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She started to sing at the age of 5 and has appeared on concerts, radio and television. She appears on the Slovenian Radio Hour Programs and has sung with the Abbey Glee Club in Canon City, Colorado. She performed for the Charity Ball in Aurora, Colorado, the USO and Cherry Hills Country Club in Denver. She was a Junior Winner in the Stars of Tomorrow Talent Contest and was a guest singer at the Division Contest at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. When she was twelve, she played the part of Gretel in “Hansel and Gretel”, a production of the Pueblo Jr. College Drama Department. (Now S.C.S.C.). She had the lead role of Anna in “The King and I” a sum-

usual membership let us down at our all important October meeting. So much was to be discussed and settled with the coming Anniversary Dinner and State Convention on October 29, 19G7. The business at hand lasted so long that the Social was limited to a fast cup of coffee and a piece of bakery.
Congratulations were extended to the former Mrs. Butchar, who on Saturday, October 14, 19G7 became Mrs. Joseph Cvetan.
With so much still to be decided, and tickets to sell, we all left wondering just how it would all turn out.
Early Sunday morning, the day of the Anniversary, the officers and very helpful and capable Mrs. Antonette Glavan were busy at work in the kitchen, which had a stove and newly-placed sink, but no utensils. That meant that the kettles, coffee makers, pitchers, Nescos, knives and what-not had to be all brought in by these very diligent hard working Slovenians, and with the help of Mrs. Pipan, Mrs. Medved, Mrs. Krznarich, Mrs. Veselka,
mer production of School District No. 60. She sings for weddings, various clubs and organizations in Pueblo and Denver, conventions, political affairs and school productions. This past year she was a semi-finalist in the Miss Teenage Colorado Springs Contest. I.ast spring she won the local Senior Division of the Stars of Tomorrow Talent Contest and went on to win the District Contest.
She is a lead singer at Holy Family Parish in Pueblo. She graduated from Seton High School where she was a Student Council Representative, and President of the Senior Class. She was the State Treasurer of the Junior Classical League and a member of the National Forensic League.
She studied voice under Madam Margolinski seven years and at present is attending Southern Colorado State College in Pueblo under a partial music scholarship where she is studying voice under Mr. Muller. She was awarded a summer music scholarship to Colorado State University and also a scholarship for summer study at Midwestern Music Camp at Lawrence, Kansas. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School.
She is the daughter of Mrs. Mary Karlinger and the late Rudolph S. Karlinger, and granddaughter of John Erjavec and the late Josephine Erjavec, and also the late Mr. & Mrs. Rudolph Karlinger all of Pueblo.
Mary Therese was the soloist at the 40th anniverasry celebration of Br. 3 and is a member of the branch as is her mother. Our very best wishes.
Mrs. Sukys and Mrs. Young, the officers, Mrs. Evanich, Mrs. Laurich, Mrs. Glavan, and Mrs. Pleslto, the shredding, peeling, cleaning and cooking got on its way and the two junior members, Linda Laurich and Mary Jo Veselka took care of the silver and table preparation that had not been finished on Saturday, by some of these same people. (I was home planting trees, or rather supervising and baby sitting while the men worked so 1 did not get there to help on Saturday. I did pitch in on Sunday, however.)
Our “thank you’s” go to the visiting members from Sheboygan, West Allis, and Bay View, as well as the Supreme Officers, Mrs. Prisland from Sheboygan, Mrs. Novak, Mrs. Železnikar and Mrs. Zefran from Chicago and the other members from out of town. We also apologize for the lack of attention and the disorder as we were all so busy taking care of the work on hand, that we couldn’t do justice to the proper "honors” due our guests. Perhaps some day we can make up for it, when we do have more time and preparation.
The dinner was a success, and the brief concert following the dinner by the very talented and lovely Slovenian singer from Milwaukee, Dolores Ivan-chich, and her pianist, were very well done. Too bad, we didn’t have more time for them.
The Convention meeting was very well attended, and the speeches, congratulations were well received. The meeting itself was too short, but well covered except for the “question and answer” period. There was no time for it, as the dinner was being served, and we had to make a fast end to the business end of the day.
“Thank you” goes out to all the donors ol’ potica, cakes, jello molds, strudels and flancete, namely, Mines. Medved, Starich, Novak, Crniklas, Lubesek, Pipan, Young, Veselka, Greis-bacher, Krznarich, Kratchnik, Glavan, Laurich, Plesko and Gornik.
The day ended about 6:00 P.M. for all the officers, Mrs. Plesko, Mrs. Evancich, Mrs. Laurich, plus the additional help given to Toni Glavan who supervised most of the kitchen work and cooking and food preparation, and a very fine job she did, as usual being a very capable worker. The kitchen and clean up helpers who stayed to help were Mary Jo and Mrs. Veselka, Linda Laurich, Theresa Sukys, Mrs. Starich, Mrs. Novak, and Sophie Stampfel, as well as Mr. Veselka who took care of the soda bar and the help given us by the husbands who did the driving to and from, as well as carrying the various equipment and table set ups. To all we are very grateful.

No. 13, San Francisco, Calif. — My
first thought is of the 14th National Convention in Washington, DC. My sister Margaret and I wish to express our appreciation in attending this most successful convention. Every detail was planned with such perfection for the comforts of all members and visiting friends.
It was an inspiration to attend Holy Mass every day offered by Rev. Claude Okom and particularly in the Immaculate Conception Shrine Crypt.
With such charming and delightful hostesses as Irene Planinšek and Corinne Leskovar they are to be complimented on a big job well done. We shall always cherish these memories.
We celebrated our 40tli Anniversary with “Zveza Day” November 12th with Holy Mass at Church of Nativity offered by Rev. Vital Vodušek in memory of our late Sister Barbara Kramer who organized Br. #13.
Since our return from the convention the meetings have been well attended. To all our officers and members of Br. #13 many thanks for their wonderful cooperation in making this year such a success.

Games night at the Slovenian I lull was a real success, with the help of our excellent committee, Gini Susta-rich, Mary Plut, Doris Lavrin, Katie Lampe, Margaret Fager, Katie Pint, Rose Bianco, Ruth Zwyssig, Rose Scoff and Chairman Fran Chiodo how could we miss? Ed Lovrin ran our game and donated some fine prizes. Thanks, nice fellow.
John Stich and Ann, our reliable financial secretary, have both been in the hospital. We are very pleased to announce our dear Ann is on the mend as is husband John. Boy, do we miss you folks!
Mrs. Confetti has been ill also and we are pleased to learn she too has improved.
With a heavy heart we write of the passing of a life long friend, Mr. Martin Slanec, husband of our past president, Mary Slanec. Mary has been ill for so many years and now to have to know the pain of losing her partner having celebrated 50 years of wedded life, we know her loss is unmeasurable as these two were real companions. Mr. Slanec would call on the phone and say “Frances your article was really good this month”; or he’d call and say “you didn’t do too good this month you should have written about this or that.” I’ll miss these calls. To Mary, a woman of real courage, all we can say is try to take care of yourself and do not grieve too much because you surely did all that could be done . .. and Martin is watching and saying "Hvala, Mary za vse.”
Again the news I bring you will not be happy as once again we have lost a dear friend, Mr. Klepec, who’s widow is a member of long standing. Mary and Tony celebrated their 50th Anniversary a few years ago; their entire family was present and such a happy time was enjoyed by all. Mary and Tony had a life of real happiness but they knew real sorrow also as son Tony was a casualty during World War 2. The loss of this fine young man saddened the hearts of these two wonderful people. Despite their heartbreak and sorrow, whenever you were in the company of Mr. and Mrs. Klepec you would always have a really good time. Both radiated with fun and laughter.
So now Mary must walk her path alone awaiting the time when there will be no more parting. But Tony has left her in fine hands, her daughters, Sophie Troya and Ann Nanut, Mary Udovich and son Eddie will pick up where Papa left off. Mary’s six grandchildren are so close to Grand-
ma so she will never know a lonely minute. Mary had no in-laws as her daughters’ husbands are really SONS to her. This is a stay-together family. We can say “sleep in peace” Tony as God is really holding your hand.
Now is the time to wish all our friends a Happy Anniversary as we celebrate the founding of branch #13 by Bara Kramer 40 years ago. Bara was a real fighter and go-getter; when men felt women’s place was at home our Bara was out scouting members for our Zveza. She has made our Branch #13 possible. We will honor our Bara at our Annual Breakfast.
Merry Christmas to all and may the New Year bring into your home only happy events. If you have a sorrow during the year may your courage be doubled to stand your trial. May Santa fill your stocking with lots of goodies, and may you all be as lucky as me with a wonderful husband as good as “MY JOE.” There isn’t much else one needs when you have a good partner to make life worth living. No. 14, Euclid, Ohio. — Our November meeting was short, at which time there wasn’t too much business to discuss. Mildred Sadar, Mary Fakult, Rose Mickovic and Anne Troha volunteered to be hostesses for our Christmas and birthday party combined. Mary Mandich won the door prize and thank you, Mrs. Cebul, for your donation to our treasury. I am happy to report that our card party was a huge success. Thanks to Pauline Krall (chairman) and to all the ladies who worked so hard with her to make it so. I’m sure without their full cooperation it could not have been done. So thank you again, from all of us.
Our condolences go' to the family of Mary Sopko who passed away October 20th at the age of 4G after a long illness and to the family of Julia Vidrick who was 61 years of age at the time of her death. They shall be sadly missed. May their souls rest in peace.
We are happy to hear that Henry Krall, husband of Pauline is well on his way to recovery after surgery.
Olga Zimmerman is recuperating at home after surgery at Euclid Glen-ville Hospital. Get well soon, Olga; we want you at our Christmas party!

Mrs. Mary Lenich, sec’y of Br. 19, Eveleth, Minn., paused for a moment at the recent Minnesota Zveza Day in Soudan to chat with local banker, John Dragovan, a true friend of Zveza.

members are cordially invited to the annual meeting which will be held on December 14th at 1:30 P. M. at my home as usual. We will have many important matters to talk over, therefore, come to this most vital meeting of the year. Election of officers will also take place. Perhaps it would be best for the branch if new officers were elected.
The attendance at our meetings has not been too large and may be more members would take an interest in the branch if a new set of officers took over. A delicious luncheon will follow the business meeting and we will also have a singing fest of Christmas carols and have an opportunity of wishing one another happy holidays.
To all who are confined in hospitals, Nursing Home and convalescing at their homes we wish a speedy recovery. May the Infant Jesus bring many blessings to you all!

No. 17, West Allis, Wis. — My trip to Lemont on Zveza Day was a very fortunate day for me. My grandson was my companion, as he felt grandma should not go alone. The day was beautiful for the activities and I enjoyed my short stay there, as I had other commitments at home and could not stay for the entire day. A few days later I received a note telling me I was a recipient of a beautiful handmade ladies’ robe, which I enjoy wearing very much. Branch #2 must be complimented on the wonderful job and the co-operation of their members, namely to chairman, Josephine Železnikar, who had taken the responsibilities of the whole affair. No matter what job she undertakes she does it well. It proves that not only as a President and Supreme Treasurer she Is also a very fine leader and well
liked by all who know and come in contact with her. May God bless you Josephine, for many more years of good health and happiness.
Our West Allis group chartered a bus on Sunday, September 24 and drove over to the Shrine of the Green Scapular at Madison, Wisconsin. We later motored over to New Glarus, Wisconsin, a Swiss village, where we went to their museum and had luncheon at the New Glarus Hotel. The cuisine was mostly Swiss and superb. From there we went to the famous Cave of the Mounds, which is worthwhile seeing. As the day was getting shorter, we had to start for home, returning back to Madison, our capitol. As we were driven around town and thru the University campus, none of us realized how great it is. It was a wonderful 1 day outing which everyone enjoyed.
Anyone touring the western part of Wisconsin will find It very interesting. Prairie du Chien has much to offer: the Louis Villa, a ride on the Mississippi, and many more places of in-terest. One also can drive up north from there or else travel to Iowa. A beautiful spot to see is the Grotto of the Redemption at West Bend. Anyone touring close to that area, should make it a must to go and see the grotto, not only during the day but also its beauty at night. It is made of various stones and petrified wood gathered throughout our country. The statues are imported and carved in such a way, that they seem to be alive.
In conjunction with our October meeting we had surprise on Frances Piwoni for 25 years of service as Treasurer of our branch. Mrs. Piwoni was presented with a corsage and a purse by our Honorary President, Mrs. Josephine Schlosar. She was congratulated by the President, Marion Marolt in behalf of the officers and members of the branch for her faithful and loyal service. A delicious luncheon was served after the meeting where everyone enjoyed themselves. Congratulations Frances, we hope you will continue to help and support our branch in the future as in the past.
Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Branch #12, Milwaukee, Wisconsin on their 40th anniversary on Sunday, October 29, which was celebrated in conjunction with Wisconsin State Convention. We had the opportunity to attend Holy Mass at the new and beautiful St. John’s Church with Rev. Claude Okorn, our spiritual advisor, as the celebrant of the Mass, and who also gave an inspiring sermon. After the Mass, the State Convention meeting was held in the hall and at 1:00 P.M. a delicious banquet was served to the members and guests. Miss Delores lvanich with her beautiful voice entertained us with many Slovenian and English melodies. We were thrilled to hear her again.
Members do not forget the Annual Meeting on Sunday, December 17 at 2:00 P.M. Election of officers and other important business matters will be discussed. We shall have the usual Christmas Party and distribution ol' the Children’s Christmas gifts. Adult members are to bring a $1.00 exchange gift if they wish to do so. Refreshments will also be served.
To our sick members we wish them a speedy recovery. Dear members, try and visit them if possible, and if not, maybe you could send them a card. It would certainly raise their spirits and shorten their lonely hours knowing a sister member is thinking of them.
Congratulations to Mary Petrich, Supreme Officer of KSK.I and secretary of St. Mary’s #105, and also our member, who again was awarded the Wisconsin Fraternal Congress award. This is her 6th award. You are very deserving to receive this award, and we are very proud of you.

No. 20, Joliet, III. — We were all very sadly surprised to hear the news that Mr. Anton Golobitsh passed away after two months in the hospital, age 58 years. He resided at N. Chicago and Jackson St. Tony Golobitsh was preceded in death by his father Tony, Sr. with whom he operated the Golobitsh Coal Co. until the death of the fcither in 1933. He was recently employed at the Caterpillar Tractor Co. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Genevieve Golobitsh, formerly Benedik, two sons, Anthony and Dennis, a granddaughter of a few months age, his mother Mary (Erzen) Golobitsh, and one uncle in Colorado. Mr. Golobitsh Senior was a pioneer of St. Joseph Parish and one of the first Supreme Officers of the KSKJ. Anthony, Jr. was the only son of the Golobitsh family, a church board member until his death and active in church activities. Ills son, Anthony, was married a year ago.
He is also mourned by the Benedik family as he was their son-in-law. His mother and wife are our members for many years as are also the Benedik in-laws. May he rest in peace and may the survivors accept our deepest sympathy. With many societies and friends attending the funeral, he was buried from St. Joseph Church to St. Joseph Cemetery.
On Oct. the 11th, a packed bus left St. Joseph’s church and headed toward Holy Hill in Wisconsin where our members of the Holy Rosary attended the pilgrimage to this holy shrine. Among these were many members of our branch and also our pastor, Mon-signor M. J. Butala who is a wonderful guide. On our way back we stop-
ped at the new parish of St. John’s In Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Father Claude Okorn greeted us and showed us the beautiful large church, the large modern school, the hall and the surroundings. We were glad to see the progress of our Slovenians and we congratulate the parishioners and its pastor the Rev. Okorn, who is also the spiritual director for Slovenian Women’s Union. The officers of the Holy Rosary Society are also members of our branch.
This year we could indeed call it a year of conventions for our members. First it was the SWIT Convention held in Washington, D. C., where many of our members attended plus the delegates and alternate, Mrs. Josephine Sumic. Later was the convention of the Grand Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles held this year at Independence, Mo., attended again by our treasurer, Josephine Sumic. On the tour there they visited the Harry Truman Library. This was one of the largest conventions of F.O.E.
Last September, the Croatian Fraternal Union held its convention In Pittsburgh, Pa. at the Pitt Hotel. Joliet members of 282' were represented by delegate and our member, Mrs. Mary Bozich with her husband, Walter, as alternate. He is a secretary for this Croatian society. At the convention, Mrs. Bozich was on the board for petitions. At that time she received an award. Congratulations, Mary!
Congratulations also to Mrs. Ann Ariagno, daughter of Mrs. Mary Kunstek, who is "mother of the year” at the American Slovene Home.
Our secretary, Frances Gaspich, mentioned that we lost 11 members this year. Our president, Emma Planinšek, commented It would be appropriate to replace this opening with new members.
Our members who were in the hospital were Mrs. Mary Plankar, Mrs. Mary Mutz, who fell from a ladder, and Mrs. Caroline Munich. Miss Katherine Butala is now at St. Patrick Retirement Home, Room 433. When in town, members, do stop and visit as she is glad to see her friends. We wish all members a speedy recovery.
It was also decided that in February we will again show the Washington, D.C. movies and slides and if time allows, the Florida, Georgia, etc. movies. Make it your plan to be at this meeting.
Since the year is coming to a close, our secretary urgently stresses to every one who is in arrears to please come to the next meeting on Dec. 17th and take care of the dues. This is your duty, while you are alive. Wo must have your dues money in order to mail it to the headquarters. Do not be on the list for cancellation. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!

Report on the Slovenian Chapel Committee Meeting in Cleveland
The second meeting of the Slovenian Chapel committee in Cleveland was held in early November at the St. Vitus church hall with a very large representation from various organizations. Two guests were present from Washington, D. C., namely, Mr. Bogomir Cholcel and Mr. Vladimir Pregelj. They traveled 350 miles to attend this meeting from their homes in Washington so you see what effort and time and expense they are willing to give for the	success of a	Slovenian Chapel in Washington. All	we are	asking is
a little	support and	help to make this dream a reality.
Messers, Chokel and Pregelj gave an interesting and detailed report on the details pertaining to the chapel.
First of all, we wish it to be clear that it will be a Chapel in the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Washington, D. C., and will be a memorial to all the	Slovenians in America. The proposal was made	that this Chapel
will be	dedicated to	Marija Pomagaj, Our I^ady of Perpetual Help	with side
pictures of two of the outstanding Slovenian religious figures who are up for sainthood. Bishop Frederic Baraga and Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek.
Bishop Baraga would be seen giving communion to the Indians and a Catholic priest in the position of giving communion to our first Slovenians in native costume. Slovenians of Europe later migrated to all parts of the world including America which is the home for the majority of Slovenian immigrants.
The Chapel is one of the last to be available for nationalities and is reserved now for two years during which time we must gather the funds. We must raise $25,000.00 by the first of the year and if we fail, the chapel will be given to another organization which has the cash on hand and is first on the waiting list.
There are over 100,000 Slovenians in Ohio, and another such number in the midwest. If each one would contribute, we would have more than enough. Since the beginning, it has been our idea to have greater participation from our people in this cause, by asking for a donation from each and everyone.
Cleveland will be the national headquarters for this fund drive since we have here the largest Slovenian settlement.

Other committee have been organized already in Washington, D. C. and New York City. They are actively campaigning in the states and surrounding areas.

For Christmas Morn:
CRANBERRY BREAD
2 cups sifted all purpose flour
1 cup sugar
iy2 teaspoon baking powder t/2 teaspoon soda V2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons soft shortening grated rind and juice of 1 orange plus water to make % cup
1 egg, beaten
1 cup raw cranberries, cut in halves (easiest to cut with scissors)
1 cup coarsely chopped nuts, if desired
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a loaf pan, 9x5x3 inches. Sift together into bowl dry ingredients. Mix and blend in shortening, orange rind, juice and egg. Stir in cranberries and nuts with fewest possible strokes. Pour into pan. Bake one hour. Cool thoroughly before slicing (best if aged one day before slicing). Slice with a thin sharp knife.
Finish the holiday meal with a flourish — with lighted English Plum Pudding:
PLUM PUDDING
1 cup flour 1 teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon Vi, teaspoon nutmeg % teaspoon mace
1% cups raisins 11/2 cups currants, plumped % pound cut citron, Vi pound cut candied orange and lemon peel % cup walnuts, chopped 11/2 cups coarse dry bread crumbs
2 cups brown suet (% pound)
1	cup broown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
*4 cup fruit juice Sift into bowl first 6 ingredients. Mix in fruits, walnuts, suet, crumbs. Mix remaining ingredients; blend in. Pour into well greased 2 qt mold (or two 1 qt. molds). Steam 6 hours. 1G servings

Molds: Mold preferable with tube center allowing heat to reach center of pudding quickly. Coffee cans, jelly glasses (for individual molds) or bowl can be used.
How to steam: Pour pudding batter into well greased molds filling them % to % full. This allows room for expansion of batter. Tie waxed paper loosely or cover with foil to prevent steam gathered from dropping on pudding.
Set in a deep kettle on a wired rack to heat evenly and keeping bottom from browning too fast add boiling water to about 1 inch below cover of the mold; keep water boiling adding more boiling water as needed. (Several kerr lids can be used in place of rack under mold.) Keep kettle covered and steam for 6 hours. To unmold, run spatula around pudding molds. Refrigerated, this pudding will keep for several weeks. Reheat in double boiler or wrap in foil, heat in 350 degree oven 15 to 20 minutes. Serve hot with Hard Sauce or your favorite pudding sauce.
HARD SAUCE
Beat i/i cup soft butter in small mixer bowl until very creamy, fluffy and light in color. (About 5 minutes). Gradually beat in 1 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar. Stir in teaspoon vanilla or rum flavoring. Chill at least an hour. Serve in a small pretty dish or shape into small balls and roll in shredded coconut for decorative effect. About 8 servings.
For old-style flaming pudding to add to the festivity; pour on heated brandy, light with a match and bring the pudding to the table encircled with flames or light at the table.

Last year when I wrote to Mrs. Edward Kompare, Supreme Auditor, from Chicago asking for some of her special recipes for Christmas she sent me several. Her Vanilla Snowballs and Dream Dars are two which
I	know you will enjoy.
VANILLA SNOWBALLS
% cup butter % cup light cream
2	teaspoons vanilla 1% cups sifted all purpose flour G tablespoons sugar 1 cup chopped walnuts Powdered Sugar Cream butter. Combine cream and vanilla; beat into butter gradually. Sift together flour and sugar; add ingredients gradually to creamed mixture. . Mix in nuts. Chill. Roll heaping teaspoonsful of dough into balls. Place 2) inches apart on greased cookie sheet.
Bake 350 degrees for 20 m. Remove from sheet. Roll into powdered sugar while still warm. About 3 dozen.
DREAM BARS
Vi pound butter 1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup flour
Cream butter, add sugar then flour. Roll out dough to fit pan 8 x 8 and bake about 12 to 15 minutes at 350 degrees.
2 eggs
1 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup ground nuts 1 cup coconut 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 tablespoon flour
Beat eggs and add sugar, baking powder, flour and vanilla. Add nuts and coconut. Pour mixture over baked dough and return to oven and bake another 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Cut into diamonds while hot.

HOLIDAY APRICOT BALLS
1 package (8 oz.) dried apricots, ground 2% cups flaked coconut % cup sweetened condensed milk 1 cup finely chopped nuts Method:	Blend apricots, coconut
and milk well. Shape in small balls. Roll in chopped nuts. Let stand about two hours or more to firm. Makes about 5 dozen balls. You can add nuts to the mixture and then roll balls ill confectioner’s sugar. These can be stored in a tight container or in freezer.	*	*	*

No. 23, Ely, Minn. Dawn Club ■— Pres. Rose Novak opened meeting with prayer. We had our meeting at the church hall Oct. 18th at 7:30. It was a Halloween Party. The ladies surely have some fine ideas for costumes. What a variety and how comical! No one knew who was who! It was really great fun and gaiety, and as before, to add more fun, Mrs. Mary Gotchnik played the accordian in her old familiar way.
A short business meeting was held. It was decided to have a card party for our November meeting. Each member to invite some guests to play.
A very nice lunch was served after the meeting by the ladies in charge.

The members of the Dawn Club enjoyed a Halloween costume party at their last meeting held in St. Anthony’s Church Hall on October 18tli with prizes awarded for the best costumes. There were costumes of Indians, Pirates, Hawaiian Dancers, Chinese, Japanese, Witches, Rabbits, and Old Timers and others. Entertainment was furnished by Mrs. Mary Gotchnik and her accordian.
Lunch and arrangements were by Mrs. Mary Shikonya, Molly Zupancicli, Mary Tolyon, Amelia Mainer, Margaret Somroch, Margaret Peclia, Mary Evanish, Mary Kosir, Ruth Zaveral and Miss Mary Stubler.
Plans were made at the meeting to have a card party which was held on November 15th with the following committees:	Miss Mary Shikonya,
Mrs. Margaret Preshiren, Mrs. Ann Merrill, Mrs. Jennie Deyak and Mrs. Frances Grahek.
I am happy to say that Ely now has a nursing home for the old and disabled people. It is very nice for members to visit the people here and they are very happy when you do.
Last month Mrs. Gotchnik came with accordian and played several songs for them. We wish toi thank Mary for the fine job she is doing. No matter what nationality the people are, they still enjoy Slovenian songs and music. I was so surprised to see the Swedes and Finns all singing “Moja Dekle”. That must be a national song as it seems that they all know it.
Also we must be proud that there are several Dawn Club members who belong to t he Red Cross “Gray Ladies” who donate their time to serve coffee, write letters, wheel patients in their chairs and read to the patients at the nursing home. Members, Molly Zupancicli, Mary Jamnik, Barbara Rosandich, Rose Novak, Emma Pucel, Rose Pucel and others belong to this worthy charitable organization. No. 24, LaSalle, 111. It seems that the days and months are passing so quickly. So we too are getting older and losing our strength. The young people are busy with their own activities; however, it would be good if our younger members would come to the meetings and take over the committee work, to bring more life and activity to our branch. We could resume with a full social schedule and have many wonderful times. So, come to the meetings, members, the date and time to be announced in the local paper — this pertains to the Christmas party. Each m ember should bring a gift in the value of one dollar. We will also have refreshments. Come and see, you who have not been to our annual Christmas party and meeting, that we have interesting get-togethers. Also I appeal to all who owe dues to come to pay them and thus, to help us with our yearly closing of the books.
Hospitalized after an operation is Evelyn Kastigar. Mary Savnik and Antonia Hoefferle are also in the hospital and all are wished the very best for quick recovery as is Mary Kastigar, recuperating at home. I know many have the flu — to you all, speedy recovery.

No. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. — The night of our meeting in October we had confirmation at our Church here in Pittsburgh. We wondered if anyone would be at the meeting. It sure was surprising to see the number of members that did come so the attendance was good. A reminder to all the members to be sure and come to the meeting on December 19th, when we have election of officers. After the meeting, we will have our usual Christmas party. Our condolences to one of our members, Rony Senfner. Her husband, Gasper, after a long, lingering illness, passed away on Sept. 10th. Also our branch lost another member, Veronica Gasper who died on Sept. lltli. Condolences also to the families. May their souls rest in peace.
Congratulations to one of our members, Carol Ann Gould, on her marriage to William Kearns. This marriage took place at St. Mary’s Assumption Church on Nov. 25th at 1 o’clock in the afternoon. I want to wish all our members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

No. 28, Calumet, Mich. — Greetings from the Copper Country. Winter and all the cold and snow which go with this season are upon us.
The last meeting of the year is coming up again and that means our Christmas Party. It will take place on Wed., Dec. 13. Supper will be served at six o'clock. The committee in charge of arrangements promise a delicious meal.
Games will follow and one dollar gifts will be exchanged.
Our Shut-in members will also be remembered.

No. 33, Duluth, Minn. — A wonderful evening was enjoyed by 120 members at our Nov. 1st meeting which began with a roast beef dinner. ROSE KRESKY, chairman, and her fine committee were in charge. They deserve much praise for the most delicious dinner. Many prizes were a-warded also.
The meeting followed when 8 adult members were initiated. They are SOPHIE MALCHOW, VILA VOELK, SHIRLEY HOPPENYAN, CHARLENE CHRISTIE, KAY DONALD, CAROL IlEINDL, MARY BARTL, DOLORES DUTMER and a junior member, JOHN JANCHAR. Congratulations girls and Johnny; we are most happy to have you in our midst.
Since there was such a large attendance, pres. FRANCES BLATNIK appointed the committees for all the various projects of the year. A nominating committee was appointed to present the slate of officers at our Dec. Gth meeting. The annual business of the year will be in order then. We hope our decisions will meet the approval of all the membership. The Christmas Party will follow. BETTY PICCANATTO is chairman assisted by a committee. Don’t miss coming or you shall regret it.
Following the meeting many slides were shown by our member HELEN MOSACK who was a visitor at the convention in Washington, D.C. They were surely enjoyed by everyone. The pictures were beautiful. Thanks. Helen.
We were saddened by the death of one of our charter members, JOHANNA SKULL who passed away on Nov. Oth, after a brief illness. At the Sept. meeting she served on the lunch committee — little did we know that she would not be with us much longer. It seems we must be prepared at all times to meet our Master. May her soul rest in peace. She is survived by a daughter AGNES SKULL who is also our member, 2 sons, Joseph living at home, Anthony of San Jose, Calif., also 2 brothers and 3 sisters and 3 grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy to the family.

No. 34, Soudan, Minn. — When the October meeting of Branch #34 took place your reporter was far away in the Eastern part of the United States. Again, in company with my sister Rose Nemanich and friend Irene Stein, both of Nopeming, Minnesota, Mr. Yapel and I went on a two-week vacation trip which started on Friday, Oct. 6th when we left home and we returned on Saturday, Oct. 21 after enjoying a wonderful, trouble-free trip.
Our first stop was Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, where we watched the boats lowered and raised at the locks as they passed through. Then we went to Sudbury, Canada to the Silver Mine there and saw the world’s largest nickel mounted on a high hill. At Ottawa in Ontario, Canada we made a tour of Parliament, but being Sunday Parliament was not in session. However, the guide took us through the House of Commons and the Senate and showed us the beautiful galleries of pictures and showed us where the Queen of England sits when she comes to visit Parliament. In front of the Parliament building, there was an "eternal flame” surrounded by “coats of arms” of the various provinces of Canada and their flags mounted beside them. The guide explained that the flame had been lit on January 1st of this year and would be extinguished on Jan. 1st of next year, and this in observance of Canada's Centennial 1867-1967.
We then continued on to Montreal where we visited St. Joseph’s Oratory and the wax museum, which in addition to life-sized figures and scenes depicting Canada’s history, included life size statues of President Kennedy, and President Johnson, our present Pope in company with Cardinal Spellman of New York and the Cardinal of Canada.
We spent one day at Expo ’67 — trying to see as much as possible in spite of a moist, rainy day but since all the exhibits were inclosed it didn’t matter, and we were dressed for rain.
Our travels then took us through New Hampshire, including Santa’s Village in Jefferson, Daniel Webster’s birthplace at Franklin, the Capitol at Concord, N. Hampshire, then through Vermont and Massachusetts stopping at interesting sites. The drive through the Berkshire Mts. and the famed Mohawk Trail, seeing the beautiful Indian Head Mts. and ski and tourist lodges at Indian Head Mt. was a wonderful experience. The trees were in their most beautiful Autumn colors of reds, orange and yellow and green
that the view around every turn was simply awe inspiring and just left us breathless. We then continued on through a number of cities in New York before continuing on to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, New York where I visited a cousin of mine, Barbara Novak, whom I had corresponded with over all the years since we were both in our early twenties, and now saw each other for the first time. Needless to say we were both happy and had much to talk over. At Cleveland, Ohio we were guests of my brother Joseph Nemanich (Supreme President of the KSKJ) and his wife Frances where we spent the weekend and were entertained so well. We visited with our Zveza Supreme President, Antonia Turek and her husband Frank — such gracious hosts also, and the Frank Kasunic’s and others. We had a tour of Cleveland, and on Monday, Oct. 16, I was a guest at Branch #50’s Halloween Party — a delightful evening with many laughs as many of the ladies were dressed in appropriate Halloween garb. The success of our Minnesota Day in Sept. had reached Branch #50 and they asked me to say a few words about it which I was happy to do. My sincere thanks to Branch #50 and to Mrs. Turek and Mrs. Nemanich for inviting me.
We left Cleveland on Tuesday morning, Oct. 17th, and our next stop was Downey, Illinois where we visited Mr. Yapel’s brother Jack who is at the Veteran’s Hospital there. I am happy to report he is much improved in health and may return to Soudan soon. We then journeyed on to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where we spent the night with Frank Yapel and his wife, also a brother of my husband. To them a sincere thanks for such wonderful hospitality. Our next stop was St. Paul, and Minneapolis where we visited with our son Anthony and family and with our daughter Barbara. After spending 3 days in the Twin Cities we returned to Soudan on Saturday evening Oct. 21st—having travelled 3,624 miles in 15 days—truly a wonderful trip!
The meeting which I missed was well attended and after business matters were taken care of a social hour was held with prizes going to Mrs. Joseph Skala and Mrs. William Vol-lendorf at “500”, Mrs. Herman Mesojedec at Scrabble and Mrs. John Tekautz at Cootie. Mrs. Mary Pahula

No. 43, Milwaukee, Wis. — Our
October meeting was held at Vickie Sporis’s home at 9th and Washington Sts. We discussed the Rummage Sale and Card Party, but haven’t decided definitely as to where and when. We are having a little difficulty in obtaining a hall. I wish to thank our dear members who attended the 40th Anniversary and also the convention meeting, and our delegate, Sophie Bevselc. It was indeed a fine representation. Our meeting next month will be at Vickie’s on 9th and Washington Sts. Election of officers will take place on December 10th so please get there at 1:20 P.M. sharp. Children ranging up to 12 yrs. of age will be entitled to a gift if their dues are paid up, so please check your dues books.
On our sick list we have Celia Marolt who Is a charter member, she is convalescing at the St. Francis Hospital and will be under surgery. Mary Korošec is hospitalized at St. Luke’s Hospital. Mamie Ambrosh, Antonia Phillips and Mrs. Podriznilc are home from the hospital and are on their way to recovery. To these members and all others at home, may God gnant them speedy recovery. Cards are welcomed to these sick members.
Congratulations to Delores Bevsek and Allen Curtis Larson who were married on Oct. 21, 1967 and also congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Zortz, whose daughter was married on October 28, 1967 and also to Mr. and Mrs. John Bistan, whose son was married Nov. 4, 1967 in Chicago, 111.
Mr. and Mrs. John Podriznik were married 59 years ago. She has been our member for 34 years. Mr. and Mrs. Podriznik are the proud parents of four children of which three are living and one deceased and eight grandchildren. Congratulations and best wishes to this grand couple and may you celebrate many, many more.
Recently, the Milwaukee Journal carried a picture of one of our members, Florence Genereau, who has five living generations. Besides herself, there is her father, daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter. Florence has 24 grandchildren. Our very best wishes and congratulations goes to this family.
In conclusion, come to the meeting in December and instead of exchanging gifts, bring in a new member. It will be an excellent gift for SWU.

St. John’s the Evangelist Church was the setting at 1 P.M. Saturday, Oct. 21, 19C7 for the wedding of Miss Delores Marie Bevsek and Allen Curtis Larsen. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bevsek of Milwaukee and Mr. and Mrs. Art Larsen of Mus-kego. Mrs. Frank Bevsek is the vice president of our branch.
The bride was given away by her father. She wore a shift style gown with a bodice of white imported lace and silk organza skirt trimmed with clusters of beaded rosebud designs. From the waist hung a white silk organza tulip-style train also trimmed with beads. The beautiful headpiece also made of lace and pearls carried out the rosebud design, which was created by her sister-in-law. She carried white daisies and yellow tea roses.
No. 46, St. Louis, Mo. — The October meeting was held on the 8th, at the home of Viola Pisoni with only 7 members present.
The meeting was opened with prayer. The only business on hand was the preparation for our Christmas party, which will be held on December 10th, at 1 P.M., at the home of Theresa Gabrian. Each member is to bring a $1.00 gift and a “white elephant” sur-price package. Arrangements will be made for transportation from the end of the bus line, please call Theresa at ME. 1-9555, 9281 Fayette. Hope to see a big turn out for our Christmas party, which will also include a short business meeting.

The maid-of-honor was the bride’s cousin, Christine Pourous, whose gown was of gold, the bodice of cut velvet and the skirt, satin. Her headpiece was of the same color and copied from the bride’s. She carried burnt gold daisies.
The three bridesmaids were Sue Ann Bevsek, Eileen Larsen and Kathleen Ziglin. Their gowns were of green cut velvet bodice and green satin skirts. The green headpieces too were copied from the bride’s.
The flower girl was Colleen Laik, who also followed the same color scheme and pattern of dress as the bridesmaids. The ring-bearer was Donald Habermehl.
The best-man was Kent Larsen, brother of the groom. The groomsmen were Frank Bevsek, Jr. brother of the bride, Michael Ristau from Muskego and Roger Schmitt. The two ushers were Ronald Hochevar I'rom Muskego and Todd Wise from Evanston, 111.
The mother of the bride wore a beautiful two-piece champagne crepe dress with a champagne lace coat and shoes to match. Her corsage was of white carnations and yellow tea roses.
The Mass was celebrated at 1 P.M. by the Rev. Father Claude Okorn. The altar was decorated with white gladi-olas. Relatives and friends filled the church. The choir was made up of 20 seminarians from St. Francis Major Seminary. The beautiful singing of this group was fabulous.
The reception of 400 people was held at Cream City Lodge. Three different orchestras entertained, so that Polkas and Rock & Roll dancing could be enjoyed.
The couple will reside in Stevens Point until the graduation of the groom in May.

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio — Our October meeting turned out to be quite a bit of fun. Of course, it was in the Hallowe’en motif. Pres. Fran Sietz, back to her natural self, presided as she never did before.

Now hear this — Branch #2>1, from West Park, were the first donors to the Shrine that we are planning to build in Washington! Congratulations to all ladies of Branch #21!
Mrs. Anthony Yapel from Minnesota and sister-in-law of Fran Nemanich, was our visiting guest. She is the sister of the well-known Supreme Pres, of KSKJ, Joe Nemanich. Also, welcome home to Jim Nemanich who was recently transferred to the Cleveland territory on his job. Nice to have you home, Jim!
A wonderful suggestion was made at our meeting, that if any trips are planned in the future, there will he a deposit so as not to have so much confusion. Good idea!
On our sick list are Dorothy Kulas and Mayme Mihelich, who have both been hospitalized recently, and are on the road to recovery. Sorry, ladies, that we didn’t mention this sooner, but we were just informed. God be with you both.
Our Hallowe’en Party was so great, that it’s just a shame that we can’t do this more often. The Bencin sisters furnished some spirits, Fran Sietz brought a huge loaf cake and other goodies were brought by the ladies. Fran Nemanich brought some costumes along with her, but was a party pooper because she didn’t dress up Hallowe’en style. Prizes were a-warded to all the ladies.
My son, Robert, who is a member, spent his summer months going to a Broadcasting School in Columbus and finished with a 3rd class license. II' you notice a new voice on Tony Pet-kovsek’s Polka Party program on WXEN, that’s my boy! He was hospitalized recently and would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their cards.

No. 54, Warren, Ohio - The lovely Christmas Holidays are upon us and we of branch 54 send everyone a greeting for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and hope that the new year will bring us peace overseas and prosperity for all!
Convalescing at home is our Vice Pres. Mary Waltko who underwent a major operation. We’ve missed her at our meetings and we hope she’s back with us very soon.
Wedding congratulations to our member, Marlene Zuga who became the bride of Stanley Urban on Oct. 28th. The Nuptial Mass took place at our beautiful church of St. James and later a reception followed. Millie Habich, our social member, Mitzi of Sharon, Pa., did the catering and it was wonderful.
Leaving for Florida this week are my in-laws, Mary and Frank Ponikvar. They’ll be vacationing for a few weeks.
Remember, dear members, dues are payable anytime to me.
Get well wishes to all our sick members and especially to Ančka Pelcic, our dear friend from West Park, who is recovering from a severe illness.

No. 52, Kitzville, Ohio. Our meeting was held the first of November at the Little Grove. There was a large turn-out. Discussions were a-bout our big Christmas Party which everyone is looking forward to attending. Rose Trombley offered her services to put on a big feed for the ladies for Christmas and if anyone wishes to bring additional goodies, they are welcome to do so. There is to be exchanging for $1.00 gifts for any one who would like to do so.
We also initiated three new members, sisters: Shirley Spinelli, Phyllis Pavich and Muriel Sabitini. We hope that as members of our branch they will enjoy meeting and spending an spending an enjoyable evening with us. We all will be looking forward to seeing you all at our Christmas Party. To all the rest, we wish that a few more of you will be among us soon. Go out and collect them and bring them along for the campaign is still going strong.
We also congratulate Sister Angeline Hrovat and family on the marriage of her daughter, Patricia, to Richard Lamar of Chisholm on Saturday, Nov. 11th, at the Blessed Sacrament church at Hibbing. May God bless you both and we hope and pray that you will have a very blissful and happy marriage, and that every day will be a honeymoon. God bless you now and always.

Now that the holiday season is with us, we all start to reminisce about our loved ones ones and are wondering if they are around and alive. Such is the case of dearly beloved sister, Mary Bartol. She has tried in every way possible to locate her husband, Rudolph Bartol’s mother and sister, Mrs. Agnes Bartol and daughter, Agnes (Aggie) Bartol whose married name, as later learned, is Francel. They resided at one time in Chicago. Please, if any one knows of their whereabouts, would they please write to Mrs. Mary Bartol, 1992 E. 52nd St., Hibbing,' Minn.
Rudolph’s brother, John, died in Europe and the father died in Kitzville about 16 years ago. So, all Rudolph has left is his mother and sister and being he came from Europe himself, he would like like very much to see them just once. Please, anyone knowing of them, notify the Bar-tols and make their holidays a happy one. They’ve tried and tried for years with no success. Thank you.

No. 55, Girard, Ohio — The October meeting opened with a prayer led by President, Mrs. Barbara Umeck and offered for the living and deceased members. This meeting was well attended. Mrs. Nancy Dombrosky was welcomed back into the Slovenian Women’s Union. Plans were made for a Christmas Party on our regular meeting night. It will be a covered dish dinner at 6 P.M. in the Slovenian Home. Members are to bring a covered dish, table service and also one dollar gift exchange.
Deepest sympathy was sent out to Mrs. Nettie Sawiclci’s family. God has called another of our dear members for her reward. For the good she has done on this earth, may she rest in peace.
With time flying and our youngsters growing into gentlemen so quickly, I must apologize for not sending our congratulations sooner to Jamie Juvančič, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Juvančič, Jr. He graduated from McKinley Memorial High School in Niles, Ohio and is attending Kent State University.

A Time To Show Your A p predation !
Rarely comes the time when a person can be made to feel that his help is needed or wanted for a Cause. And, Causes are so many, that often we either disregard them or discount them as worthless.
Now, in the closing month of the year 1967, a historic and meaningful Cause has appeared, partly through the efforts of our own Slovenian Women’s Union which has taken the initiative in collecting funds for a ■monument to the deep beliefs Slovenians have maintained for centuries.
This monument will stand for more than one lifetime — perhaps for a century — and hundreds of thousands of people will see it and believe that the Slovenians are a people of heart and soul. That the Slovenians are not so contained within themselves that they would turn away from the opportunity to show their religious beliefs.
With the help of God and his Blessed Mother, for whom Slovenians have great devotion, the Slovenian Shrine of Marija Pomagaj, or Mary, Help of Christians, will be erected within the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C., a church that has been built in the name of all Catholics in America. We will visit there along with tens of thousands of other Catholics of many other nationalities, to pay homage to the Mother of God.
If you feel close to Her and wish to show a way of expressing your gratitude for your blessings in this life, send a check, right now, to the Slovenian Chapel Fund in care of the secretary Frank A. Turek, 986 Bryn Mawr Ave., or to the Home Office, or local committees, NOW, when it will count most.

AMERICA’S CHRISTMAS CARD HERITAGE
The Yule Cards Exchanged in America in the 1880’s Tell A Fascinating, Nostalgic Tale of Christmas Gone By.
The story of Christmas in America is nowhere more charmingly illustrated than in the quaint and colorful Yule greetings exchanged in this country during the last century.
These antique cards, many of which are preserved in the Hallmark Historical Collection, tell a fascinating, frequently nostalgic tale of the customs and traditions associated with the Christmas season of our grandparents’ day.
Some of the earliest American cards bore designs that would hardly seem in keeping with the Yule season today. One group, for example, by the noted illustrator Frederick Church, had a patriotic motif. They were among the first to be introduced to the American public.
Christmas greetings had their origin as recently as 1843 and were almost exclusively an English custom until their sudden and widespread popularity in America some 40 years later.
The first American Christmas cards were published in Boston by a man named Louis Prang. They cost a penny each and were modest in size and design by modern standards.
Prang, who would later be known as “'the father of the American Christinas card,” was a German refugee who had established a successful business selling visiting cards, business advertisements and announcements both here and in England.
In 1872, he began printing brief Christmas sentiments on small visiting cards and found that they sold well in England. These unique, improvised Yule greetings, some bearing floral designs on black backgrounds, were among the cards introduced to the American public at the centennial.
When Prang noted that the idea of sending printed Christmas greetings was well received here, he set aside other interests to concentrate on the new Yule cards.
Within two years, the greetings hnd been enlarged to postcard-size. Longer texts and pictorial designs appeared and a series of cards with flowers, birds and animals became very popular.
Curiously, although scriptural texts were common, few if any Nativity scenes were printed on the 19th Century cards. Holly and mistletoe, the traditional Chirstmas symbols, made an early appearance as did Santa Claus and his reindeer, popularized earlier in the century by the famous Clement Moore poem, “A Visit From Saint Nicholas.”
There is abundant evidence of artistic designs still in use today, such as New England snow scenes, church bells, sleighs pulled by teams of horses and fire-sides with Christmas stockings hung at the mantel.

remotely connected with the Yule season. One example, from the Hallmark Collection was published in 1881 by G. D. DeVore of Newark, N. J. It is devoted exclusively to the most popular American poet of his day, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It consists of three panels. Two illustrate the poems whose verses appear beneath them — and the third was an autographed picture of the old gentleman himself. The bottom of the card bore the simple legend: Christmas Greetings.
Prang, a superb and dedicated craftsman, had perfected a process for lithographic coloring that led to inexpensive mass production. But he was determined that the facilities to mass produce should not debase art. Rather his view was that art and good taste should be brought into the everyday lives of the masses. -—
He used as many as 20 plates to achieve his artistic results and, beginning in 1880, organized a series of competitions whose generous prizes attracted the best art and design talent in the country.
As the Christmas cards become more and more elaborate, some bore a fringe and tassels and these beautiful cards were hung in homes. It was also a common practice to preserve favorite cards in the family album. From such sources, a number of the antiques in the Hallmark Collection have been gathered.

Many of our members enjoyed going to the foothills and hills too, to pick pinon nuts this fall as they were plentiful this year. It was fun getting out. Our family went out quite a few times. The air is so nice and fresh with the smell of cedar and pinon trees. The pine cones, by the way, make beautiful Christmas wreaths and table pieces; with patience, one can make some beautiful pieces of interest.
With roasted pinon nut eating, outliving room looked like the squirrels were having a picnic. The more you eat, the more you want.. But, of course, there are shells to sweep.
Talking to Johanna Plautz about her trip to Yugoslavia, she stated the time spent there was very enjoyable. She had a very nice time.
Hope everyone has a great time on their Christmas shopping spree. Have fun! Be careful! And ladies, do watch your weight during the holidays. Isn't it fun?

No. 67. Bessemer, Pa. — Our meeting was well attended in October. Several new faces were present. A-mong them were Celia Hulina, Clara Simonsic, and Mary Grbenz, who took a trip to Europe to visit their mother’s homeland.
So, ladies, we are going to have a special meeting because the ladies have so much to talk about and movie slides to show us that it will take two hours. Will let you all know when or what day it will be.
After the meeting, the officers surprised the ladies with refreshments of cake and delicious chicken that the Croatian Club makes. The ladies stayed and danced to the music of the Pikers Polka Band.
Don’t forget our annual Christmas Party and exchange of $1.00 gift. Plans are being made to go out to dinner for the evening; we’ll let you know when and where.
We try to remember our sick and shut-in members with a greeting card; if you are slighted, forgive us as it is simply because we did not know of your illness. So members, let us know of anyone who is ill or in the hospital.
It’s with deep regret I have to
write about the death of another of our oldest members, who passed a-way, Katerine Bacic; she lived in Poland, Ohio. Our sincerest sympathy to the family and may she rest in peace.
We wish to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Vladimir Slavich of Cleveland, Ohio on their 25th Anniversary on Sept. lGth. Mildred is the sister of Victoria Yardas, Mary Kozul and Ann Novad, members of our branch.
Also like to congratulate my aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Perčič, on their 50th anniversary Nov. 17th. I wish them many more to come.

members that attended the Minn. Zveza Day in Tower-Soudan Sept. 10th had a wonderful time. We want to congratulate Br. 34 for a job well done. There was so much excitement with meetings, programs, and visiting with our sisters of Minnesota Branches.
It was a pleasure meeting Corinne Leskovar, other officers and guests. Thanks to the cooks as the banquet was delicious. It was a most enjoyable day. Even the weatherman was with us; it was a beautiful day.
Our group was very happy that Helen Kovali attended the Zveza Day. Helen lives in Ely, Minn., but has been sick for some time. Our branch prays for your recovery.
I also want to thank my sister, Mary Gotclinlk from Ely, Minn., for entertaining us with her accordian and the good Slovenian songs we all sang. I could of sung and danced all night! But the old saying is, “all good things must come to an end.”
We are happy to have sister, Mary (Tony) Deblock, back in our group. The past year she lived with her daughter in California.

No. 86, Nashwauk, Minn. October being Rosary Month, many of our sisters attended church services before the meeting which is commendable. Our attendance seems to have dropped for some reason.
We didn’t have too much business to take care of, although we did discuss next year’s State Convention, which, I suppose will be the main topic of discussion until next September. We also discussed ways and means of raising money, but no decisions were reached.
Our president is back and all of us were happy to see her. Welcome home, sister Mary!
Mrs. Pauline Stish and her daughter, Jeanette, served a delicious dessert and coffee. Cards were played after the business meeting and prizes were won by M. Gustafson in canasta and Petra Jensen in bridge. The two winners were guests. We hope to see you all at our next meeting.

No. 95, So. Chicago, III. — With time of the essence, it was most gratifying to me to see that that every chair chair was occupied, and then some, at our November meeting. At this meeting, a report was given by MARY PLESHA on the audit of our books. The books were found in order. We also welcomed another new member, MARY F. MUNDGER, 9300 S. 85th Ave., Hickory Hills, 111. You can certainly see that our branch refuses to stand still in members, “Good members multiply pleasures.”
Two turkeys were also given away. The lucky winners being MARY MUNDGER and one of our guests, MRS. CAPPORALI. In all, 43 members attended and 3 guests. Congratulations, winners!

In October we had an interesting meeting. We discussed the Slovenian Chapel in the Immaculate Conception Shrine in Washington, D. C. The drive towards the chapel is in process now. I know it will be successful, and hope you all give this a thought. Our Supreme President is in charge, so contact her.
Also, we discussed our 1968 Bazaar. It will be Oct. 13th at St. Vitus Auditorium. There will be more to report later on this.
Our Glee Club will have a Bake S'ale Dec. 14th. WTe must raise money to pay expenses. It will be at American Jugoslav Center, 20713 Lindbergh Ave., Euclid, Ohio.
In April, after Easter, we will have a Card Party at Euclid Park Wall and will reveal the date later.
One of our Combined Branch members celebrated her 60th Wedding Anniversary. We all greeted her and surprised her with a little gift as she is our recording sec’y. and does a wonderful job, Dorothy Strniša. We all love her.
Our Jr. bowlers are doing well, and sure are having a lot of fun besides. They have learned to bowl better which makes it more enjoyable; that is the nice part about it. It gives the youth an opportunity for fun and sport. So, those of you who haven’t started a bowling group as yet should do> so as it is never too late.
Our 1968 State Convention will be in conjuction with Br. 15’s 40th Anniversary on May 26, 1968.
Since Christmas is so near and my notes are late, 1 want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and may God bless you all. Hope 1968 will be a prosperous year for our organization. Mary Bostian

In conclusion, it hardly seems possible that Christmas is here again, it seems curious that at Christmas time we become so involved in the mechanics of shopping and business that we very often neglect the intimate sharing that is our deepest need. The season is robbed of its priceless ingredient when we become so enmeshed in the rush and fury of preparing for the day that we have neither time nor inclination for communion with one another. There is wisdom in slowing down and taking time to see one another with seeing eyes. Remember, the days will be more rewarding if our sharing is not inhibited by our hurrying. “MERRY CHRISTMAS!”

glad to report that our Annual Card Party was a great success. Thanks to all the chairmen and crew who worked so very hard to make it the success that it was. An excellent job was done by all. But I know all you gals who attend our meetings regularly are glad that sewing class is over!
We’re glad and proud to welcome into our branch a new member, Mary Tuckush.
Good luck to Stella Hajdek’s son, Jim, who recently entered the Service. Our prayers are with you, Jim.

No. 103, Washington, D. C. Welcome back to Washington, Helena Špacapan! Our hostess spent 4 months visiting the near East countries and renewing acquaintances with her old friends. Much of Helena’s vacation was spent in Lebannon and the modern city of Beirut. From there Helena visited Syria, Trieste, Rome, Milan and Slovenia. She looks refreshed and rested after her trip and we are glad to have her back with us.
Much of the discussion at the October meeting centered around our Second Anniversary Slovenian Dinner-Dance, scheduled for the 11th of Nov. at the Holiday Inn. The ladies were eager to see a typical Slovenian Dinner served and this calls for Beef Noodle Soup, Klobase, Sauerkraut, Mashed potatoes, Potica, Compote and Wine. We all expected to have a delicious dinner and a happy time dancing afterwards.
Hostesses for the meeting proved once again that home baking is the best. Sweets in the form of creme puffs and jelly roll were served to the group numbering over 25. The delicious refreshments were served from a table covered with delicate blue linen. An elegant floral arrangement of autumn flowers enhanced the table. Silver candlesticks completed the arrangement and created a lovely “sweet table.”
Father Blatnik, chaplain of our branch paid us a surprise visit during the meeting. He Introduced a Slovenian priest, Father Ceglar, who is presently staying in D. C. After a few brief comments about his 40th anniversary to the priesthood, Father Blatnik departed but only after a promise to return for the Nov. 11 dinner.
My very best wishes to each member for a Christmas that brings peace of mind and heart during very troubled times. May the coming year be blessed with the Lord’s strength, that each one might withstand the turbulence of this modern and hectic world in which we live.

No. 105, Detroit, Mich. — Our October meeting was held at Katherine Musick’s home. A nice attendance of 1G members was present. We opened with a prayer. A few of our members that attend regularly were absent, such as, Alice Becker, Ann Lindich, Mary Zimmerman. We do hope that they will be able to come at our next meeting.
Ann McGee is feeling like herself again, after her opertaion, and we are all happy about that.
Six of our members attended the State Cnvention, Pauline Adamic, Audrey Krulic, Jennie Bole, Katherine Musick, Gail Simon, Julia Panzica. They really enjoyed it. They made our mouths water when they mentioned good noodle soup and potica, etc that they ate! We are also serious about having the convention here in the next two years.
Audry won a door prize at the convention, a lovely pair of pillowcases. She was so thrilled. They were treated wonderfully by everyone, and believe me, when you come to the convention here in Detroit, we also will show some good hospitality.
Zorka MaJsel received a beautiful gold circle pin, imbedded with a pearl for being the “Mother of the Year.” Fulvia Rosa received a gift, a china cup and saucer and Rose Jamnick a 1968 calendar made of cloth. Very pretty.
Incidentally, Ann McGee thanks everyone who sent her cards when she was ill. She did send the women of our club a lovely thank you card.
Our November meeting was at Ann Lindich’s house on Nov. 5. Gall Simon will have it at her home Dec. 17th for Christmas. Katherine had a lovely birthday cake for the two members who had birthdays, Marg Zimmerman and Jeanie Vidmar and some pictures also were taken.

To know Anne Petrich was a special privilege, because she made everyone who had the pleasure of spending some time in her company feel a certain richness which is found only in genuine friends. Her personality was a golden reflection of an honest heart filled with endless love for every human being.
Anne was born near Novo Mesto, Slovenia. She came to USA as a young girl, beautiful and full of ambition. She visited her birthplace with her husband John in 1929. She joined SWU in 1932 in Warren, O., where the family had its home. In 193G she was a delegate to the Milwaukee convention land was elected to the Supreme Board. In appreciation for the honor bestowed on her at this convention as a Supreme Officer, she started to really work for the progress of S.W.IT. and organized eight branches in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Six of the branches are still active. Her husband, John drove her to the towns where there was a possibility of starting a new branch. In 1946 the family decided to move to Fontana, Calif., where the warm climate was more promising for better health. The one big regret of their move to Oalifornia was that they were far away from the old gang but in no time at all, they made new friends who together with the old friends mourn the loss of a real champ.
Dear Albina:
It is with deep regret that I must inform you that my mother, Mrs. Anna Petrich, passed away July 5th.
It is so hard for my Dad and I to realize that she Is gone. Ever since June 1, 1967 when she suffered a heart attack and also a stroke, we were expecting this day to come; but, prepared as we were, her death still hit us hard. When someone dies who is close to you, like your own mother, you are never prepared for something like this.
In the past five weeks, she suffered very much. She was in constant pain. Some days she improved, but then on other days she would get worse. A week ago Sunday (June 25) we called her piiest and he gave

Anne is survived by husband John, son Johnny, sisters Mary Habich, president of Br. No. 74, Ambridge, Pa., Sophie Gorup and three grand children.
The following letter from her son Johnny written to me on July 7th, is an open testimonial of the great temple of love and admiration the late Anne Petrich had built in life and will remain a lasting monument to her memory. Albina Novak
her the Last Rites of the Church. Right to the end she knew everything. She prayed right along with the priest and received Holy Communion every morning. Every day she would talk about people and how much she loved them. She would say, “I love you — I love everybody” and my mother did.
I strongly believe that no matter who my mother met, she liked and loved — and I believe whoever met my mother also loved her. This was proven in the past month when she received well over 100 Get-Well cards from all over the United States. The articles that appeared In the “Zarja” brought many, many- responses. Right up to June 1, 1967 she was still active in the S. W. U. As you know,
Albina, from the past, her whole heart was wrapped in the S. W. U. I also know that even though we have been away from you and Corinne, she always loved you. She would talk about all the good times we used to have. She didn’t want to bother you too much because she’d say: “Albina’s real busy — don’t bother her.”
The day of July 5th, she was doing nicely. My Dad and I were with her in the afternoon. She felt strong but in the evening she started to breathe heavily. The nurse gave her a pill about 7:20. My mother looked up at her and said: “I love you — I love everybody.” A little later she asked me to wipe her forehead with a damp cloth. As I held her in my arms, I wiped her forehead gently.
She said: “Oh, that feels so good — so good.” She closed her eyes, and without any commotion, she passed away in my arms. She just couldn’t go on any further. A peaceful sleep finally came. One thing I can be proud of as I look back over the years: she was a very faithful person and mother. She had love for everybody. She’d been ill as long as I can remember — yet she never let anyone down. In the early days she was one of your best organizers, and she loved every bit of it. She brought me up the RIGHT way. She made sure that I attended church every Sunday. Made sure that I had respect for others. Made sure that my Dad, Mother and I would be very close to each other. She always loved to hear me sing: “Kje je moj mili dom?” It was one of her favorites, and as I sang she had tears in her eyes.
I’m sorry Albina that I wrote so much, but somehow I just couldn’t help it. My love for her was always strong. I worshipped the ground she walked on. I made sure that I would never disgrace her in any way. I’ll always have fond memories of her and I honestly believe in my heart that with all the suffering she went through in the past years, that St. Peter had the gates opened to Heaven and said: “Enter Anna, you’re cleared — your mother, father and son are waiting for you just as soon as you talk to God.”

KAPELE V CERKVI MARIJINEGA OZNANJENJA V LJUBLJANI
V cerkvi Marijinega oznanjenja v Ljubljani, splošno poznano kot frančiškanska cerkev, so obnovili kapele za glavnim oltarjem ter jih preuredili tako, da je na desni strani Krstna kapela, na levi Poročna kapela in srednja je Evharistična kapela v kateri je vsak dan od pol sedmih zjutraj do pol enajstih dopoldne izpostavljeno sveto Rešnje Telo v javno češčenje. Načrte za preureditev kapel je napravil prof. arh. ing. Tone Bitenc.
V Poročni kapeli je popolnoma nov oltar Marije Pomagaj. Oltarna miza je iz belega marmorja; nad oltarjem pa visi v čudovito lepem, zlatem okvirju kopija brezjanske Marije Pomagaj. Kopija je delo pokojne uršulinke m. Pije Garantini. Okvir je zamislil in izdelal mojster Maks Bergant iz Kamnika.
V Krstni kapeli je ostal oltar sv. Juda Tadeja, le nekoliko dvignjen je. Ta oltar je delo pokojnega mojstra Plečnika. Sv. Juda Tadeja je naslikala Elza Oherreig-ner. Pod oltarno mizo je kip sv. Male Terezije. Ta kip je bil prvotno v karmeličanski cerkvi na Selu v Ljubljani. Ko pa so to cerkev porušili, so kip odkupili ljubljanski frančiškani. Pred oltarjem je na levi strani stari krstni kamen, na desni po omarica z okovanimi vratiči za krstne potrebščine. Poleg te omarice je ka-menit svečnik s kovinastim nastavkom za krstno svečo.
Srednja kapela je po oltarju v črno Marijo Lvretanska kapela, po posebnem tabernaklju pa, ki stoji pred oltarjem, imenovana tiudi Evharistična kapela. Taberna-

kelj stoji na podstavku iz črnega marmorja; sam ta-bernaklej je iz tombaka. Ob straneh sta dva velika kamnita svečnika v kovinastima nastavkoma za sveče.
V	ozadnju kapele pa visi poševno s stropa križ velikega mojstra arhitekta Jožeta Plečnika.
V	vseh treh kapelah so tudi nova barvna okna, na katerih so simboli zakramenta sv. krsta, zakramenta sv. zakona in evharistični simboli. Načrte z>a ta okna je izdelal prof. Stane Kregar.
Priporočam toplo vsem, ki boste obiskali Ljubljano, da si ogledate te kapele, ki so za glavnim oltarjem v frančiškanski cerkvi. Počutim se zelo srečna, ker imam v Ljubljani sestrično go. SLOVENSKA KAPELICA V NARODNEM SVETIŠČU V WASHINGTONU
Svetišče Brezmadežnega spočetja v Washingtonu, D. C. je največja katoliška cerkev v Združenih državah ter sedma največja na svetu. Zgrajena je bila zato, da služi kot vsenarodno svetišče vsej Katoliški cerkvi v Ameriki. Nad en milijon ljudi obišče vsako leto to svetišče in okrog 15,000 ljudi prisostvuje nedeljskim mašam.
Posebne spominske kapele so bile oddeljene za razne narodnostne skupine, ki so prispevale k razvoju katoliške cerkve in kulture v Združenih državah. Kapele, ki so jih narodnostne skupine že darovale. (Litvanci, Slovaki, ameriški Mehikanci in Hrvatje) so že dokončane, ali pa se še grade.
Za časa konvencije naše Zveze v Washingtonu je bila l>o tamošnji podružnici št. 103 predložena in brez ugovora sprejeta resolucija, da Zveza nudi moralno podporo ter sodeluje z celotnim slovenskim narodom v Ameriki, da se vpostavi tudi slovensko kapelico v Narodnem svetišču Združenih držav.
Zvezina gl. predsednica, sestra Antonia Turek, je v Clevelandu sklicala na posvetovanje zastopnike slovenskih društov in fara. Zaključek zborovanja je bil, da se prične nabirka za kapelico. Sodelovanje so obljubile slovenske Jednote in Zveze ter slovenske fare. Skupni stroški od začetnih arhitektovih načrtov pa do sveč na oltarju ter trajno vzdrževanje kapele so — 70 tisoč dolarjev.
Ta mesec bo vsaka Zvezina podružnica prejela uradno pismo s prošnjo za prispevke. Upamo in pričakujemo, da se bodo odzvale vse podružnice.
Slovenska kapelica bo v trajno in častno priznanje ter v najlepši spomin našim pionirjem ter mladi slo-vensko-ameriški generaciji.
Nova Katoliška Enciklopedia
Po preteku 60 let je izšla nova izdaja znane Katoliške enciklopedije,, obsegajoče 15 knjig. Pokroviteljstvo tega velikega dela je bilo v rokah Katoliške univerze v Washingtonu.
V	novi enciklopediji se nahajata dva obsežna članka, ki ju je spisal naš rojak dr. Rajko Ložar, direktor muzeja v Manitowoc, Wis. Prvi članek obravnava bolgarsko umetnost, drugi pa umetnost narodov v Jugoslaviji. To sta dva zelo pomembna doprinosa, mimo katerih ne moremo iti, ne da bi jih omenili.
Radovedna, na kak način je dr. Ložar dobil poziv za pisanje teh člankov sem ga naprosila za podatke, ko je bil pri nas na obisku. Rekel je:
“Meseca maja 1964 je glavno uredništvo katoliške enciklopedije določilo za urednika umestnostnih člankov (Art Editor) Rev. Romana Verostka OSB, profesorja u-metnosti na Benediktinskem kolegiju St. Vincent, v La-trobe, Pa. Na tem kolegiju poučuje psihologijo in teologijo Slovenec, profesor Rev. dr. Alfonz Čuk.
Rev. Verostko se je prof. Čuku potožil, da nima nikogar, ki bi za enciklopedijo napisal članke o slovanski u-metnosti, nakar je dr. Čuk omenil dr. Ložarja, čeprav ga je poznal le po njegovih delih. Dr. Ložar je podpisal pogodbo, da bo napisal te članke v obsegu 15,000 besed.
Uredništvo je zahtevalo, da morajo biti članki znanstveno na visoki ravni in tudi upoštevati najnovejšo literaturo o predmetu. Nastale so velike težave, ker nobena ameriška univerzitetna ali druga knjižnica nima literature o slovanski umetnosti v zadovoljivih obsegih na razpolago. Avtor je moral veliko potovati pri iskanju gradiva
ter pri tem izgubljal dragoceni čas, ki bi ga rabil za pisanje samo. Zato je moral odpovedati članek o češki, poljski in ruski umetnosti ter je obdržal samo bolgarsko in jugoslovansko umetnost. Zasluga Rev. Verostka pa je, da je dal pisatelju na razpolago več prostora za ta dva članka kot je bilo prvotno določeno, saj ima danes samo članek o jugoslovanski umetnosti skoraj toliko besed, kolikor jih je bilo prvotno določenih za vso slovansko u-metnost. Slovenci in Jugoslovani sploh, moramo biti Fa-thru Verostku hvaležni.
Kdor samo malo pozna razne enciklopedije, ve, da se doslej ni nikdar jugoslovanska umetnost obravnavala tako, da bi Slovenci, Srbi in Hrvati imeli svoja poglavja kot je zdaj urejeno. Nova enciklopedija je v člankih edinstvena tudi zato, ker piše vsa krajevna in osebna imena v dotičnem jeziku; slovenska v slovenskem, srbska in hrvatska v srbo-hrvaščini ter s strešico in ne brez nje.
“Ilustracije so žalostno poglavje, toži dr. Ložar. Slovence zadena krivda nas tukaj in one v domovini. Nas, stare in nove naseljence, zadene krivda zato, ker se nismo povzpeli tako visoko, da bi imeli kulturni inštitut, kjer bi bila vsa potrebna knjižna dela zbrana; one v domovini pa zadene krivda vsled tega, ker so objavljali do nedavnega svoja dela v takih oblikah, da jih ni bilo mogoče rabiti kot vir za ilustracije in često niti za biblio grafijo. Marsikaj, kar smatrajo doma za važno, ni z mednarodnega stališča nič važno. Šele po letu 1965 so v domovini pričeli izboljševati to stanje.
Če so torej članki o srbski in bolgarski umetnosti dobro ilustrirani, je to posledica tega, da so imeli Srbi in Bolgari krasne izdaje svoje umetnosti in lahko reproduciraš sliko. Mi Slovenci nismo imeli nič takega.”
Dr. Rajko Ložar je rojen Ljubljančan. Visokošolske štu dije je dovršil na univerzah v Ljubljani in na Dunaju, kjer je promoviral za doktorja filosofije. Njegovo ime se nahaja v mednarodnem imeniku muzejev in umetnosti v Ameriki, Kanadi, Nemčiji in drugod.
Slovenci smo ponosni na dr. lx>žarja in na njegovo široko znanje. Upamo, da bo še bogatil ameriško literaturo s prispevki o Slovencih in o Slovanih sploh.

V	vsem letu ne damo in ne prejmemo toliko daril kot o Božiču.
Prepričana sem, da tudi ve tedne in tedne pred božičnimi prazniki preudarjate, kaj bi svojim dragim poklonile. Da, svoje domislice celo pišemo na papir in ko pride čas nakupovanja, se pridružimo reki nakupovalcev, ki se vali zkozi trgovine.
Vsak človek je rad obdarovan. Darilo pa ima svojo vrednost le, če je praktično. Tako darilo izkazuje skrbno izbiro. Darila, ki se izkažejo za prazno šaro, katero ne vemo kam postaviti in zakaj rabiti, so brez pomena in potrata denarja.

Zapisnik državne konvencije za Ohio in Michigan
I^etna konvencija za Ohio in Michigan se je vršila (lne 24. septembra v lepi in prijazni naselbini prvih Slovencev v mestu Barberton, Ohio. Potovanje je bilo nadvse lepo organizirano pod vodstvom državne predsednice, sestre Mary Bostian. Vožnja je bila krasna, dan lep in sonce nas je spremljalo s svojimi žarki celo pot in drevesa so se klanjala ob poti in pozdravljala naš autobus. Sestre članice in njihovi možje so bili vsi v veselem razpoloženju. Eden je imel tudi harmoniko in autobus je zazvenel s slovenskimi pesmi.
Seja se je pričela ob treh popoldne v šoli Sacred Heart. Zapisnik od Marie Beck iz zadnje konvencije, ki se je vršila v Newburgh, O., je bil prečitan in sprejet.
Poklicane in navzoče so predstavnice naslednjih podružnic: št. 6-6, 14-12, 15-3, 32-8, 41-5, 47-3 ,49-2, 50-11, 51-2, 54-3, 73-5, 101-5, 105-6.
Odsotne so bile naslednje podr. št. 25, 2'8, 40, 42, 55, 62, in 68. Nekatere so imele zadostne razloge za njihovo odsotnost, za druge pa ne vemo.
Državna predsednica Mary Bostian je poročala in čestitala št. 6 k 40 letenici dobrega poslovanja. Poročala je tudi o mladini iz Euclida ki so pokazali kaj so zmožni naši otroci. Organizirala je mladinski krožek za bowling in baton twirling in s tem pridobila ne samo otroke, ampak tudi matere in nove članice so pristopile.
Nato poroča preds. št. 6, ki se zahvali vsem podružni-
cam za veliko udeležbo na tej proslavi in jim pove, da so bile vesele biti gostiteljice.
Toplo priporoča, da podr, izberejo posebne volilne odbore, ki posebno ob praznikih, dalje prosi, da naj članice pošljejo kuharske recepte urednici, vabi vse, da darujejo za šolninski sklad in posebno priporoča, da vse darujemo za slovensko spominsko kapelico v Washingtonu, D. C.
O	napredku mladine v Euclid, O. poroča Ann Cooke. Mladina z velikim veseljem nastopa na različnih prireditvah. Nastopila je tudi na konvenciji v Washingtonu. Predstavljena je bila namestnica nadz., Theresa Skur. Prihodnja konvencija se bo vršila 1970 v Euclid, Ohio.
Skupna prireditev podružnic bo 13. okt. pri Sv. Vidu v Clevelandu. Priporoča se, da vsaka podr. ima badges pri raznih funkcijah.
Prebrana so pozdravna pisma tej konvenciji, katera so poslale urednica Corinne Leskovar, gl. taj. Albina Novak in Penna., drž preds. Mrs. Tomšič.
Spomin umrlim članicam, je privabilo marsikateri solze v oči, ko so čla. št. 50 in mladina od št. 6 prižgale posamezne svečke ter molile za umrle.
Seja je bila zaključena ob 4:30 pop. nato pa je bil slavnostni banket v dvorani. Večerja je bila zelo o-kusna, program izvrsten v veselje in zadovoljstvo vsem.

Št. 2, Chicgo, 111. Ob zključku se naša podr. pripravlja, da pomaga proslaviti važno 100 letnico smrti svetniškega slov. škofa Frederika Baraga in v teku je velika nabiralna akcija za prostovoljne prispevke za slovensko spomnisko kapelo v Washnigtonu. Upamo, da se bodo vse odzvale.
Vse članice ste vljudno vabljene na našo letno skupno sv. mašo za žive in umrle članice, ki bo v nedeljo dne 17. decembra ob 8 uri zjutraj v cerkvi pri Sv. Štefanu. Istega dne popoldne ho Božičnica ob 2 popoldne v veliki dvorani. Odrasle članice so tudi lepo vabljene in mladinski člani pod 10 leti starosti bodo prejeli darilo. To ima v oskrbi blagajničarka Elizabeth Žefran. Mladinci pa bodo imeli priliko, da pokažejo svoje talente.
Ne pozabite v četrtek dne 14. dec. bo naša letna seja in volitve odbora za prihodnje leto. Tajnica je zelo vesela lepega odziva na poslane opomine. Leto gre h koncu in upam, da boste vse pravočasno poravale Vaše obveznosti.

Št. 3, Pueblo, Colo. Prelepi božični prazniki, se približujejo. Po vseh domovih se sedaj vršijo priprave za ta družinski praznik. Leto se bliža svojemu koncu. Ko se ozremo nazaj, se bomo predvsem zahvalili ljubemu Bogu za njegovo dobrohotno vodstvo našega dela. Vsem skupaj iz srca želim, da bi bili božični prazniki blagoslovljeni za vas in vaše družine.
Opominjam, da imam kuharske knjige in pesmarice na rokah. To je lepo koristno darilo za vse, posebno še za ta mlade gospodinje.
V	preteklem poletju je več naših članic obiskalo rojstno domovino Slovenijo. Tukaj rojena Frances Babich in soprog John sta obiskala znamenitosti domovine in John, ki je bil rojen v starem kraju, je opazil mno-
go sprememb onstran morja. Daniela Klintz, ki je tukaj rojena, je obiskala svojo nečakinjo v Južni Ameriki in spotoma si je ogledala tudi razne kraje v Jugoslaviji, posebno vasi, kjer živijo njeni sorodniki.
Vnukinje naše Mary Poder, Jean-tete in Ginny Poder pohajata v šolo Mary Crest College v Davenportu, Iowa. Obe se pripravljata, da postaneta šolske učiteljice.
V	Zarji je Nika Kovačič zelo lepo opisala potovanje po raznih državah, predvsem v Baragovi deželi.
Glavna predsednice Antonija Turek priporoča, da se prične kampanja za prostovoljne prispevke Slovencev za kapelo v Washington, D. C., kjer bi se naj postavil slovenski oltar Marije Pomagaj v katedrali Brezmadežnega Spočetja. Gotovo bomo vsi pomagali.
Našim bolnicam želimo hitrega o-lcrevanja. Mary Germ je srečno prestala operacijo, tako tudi Mildred Pe-chek na roki. Angela Kral se sedaj zdravi doma in Mary Beth Klun se zdravi v Denver, Colo. V bolnišnici si krepijo zdravje Louise Drobnick, Anna Pechelt in Rafaela Francel. Mati naših čla. Zupančič girls, je tudi resno bolana v bolnišnici. Vsem želimo ljubega zdravja.
Najlepše čestitke k zlati poroki 50 letnice, katero sta obhajala dne 29. okt. Mr. in Mrs. Mrs. Joseph Kastelic v Kansas City, Kans. Obema želimo še na mnoga leta med nami. Hvala za povabilo, da bi bila z vami na Vaši proslavi.

Z drugega sestanka za “Slovensko kapelo”
Cleveland, O. — Drugi sestanek društvenih zastopnikov in posameznikov je bil v nedeljo 12. novembra 19G7 v cerkveni dvorani pri Sv. Vidu. Udeležba je bila prav lepa. Tudi na tem sestanku sta bila zopet med nami g. Bogomir Chokel in g. Vladimir Pregelj iz Washingtona, D. C., ki sta navzočim pojasnila namen in pomen te kapele ki bo trajen spomenik vsem ameriškim Slovencem v veličastni cerkvi Marijinega Spočetja v Washington!], D. C. Kot je bilo že omenjeno, bo v oltarju podoba Marije Pomagaj z Brezij, ob straneh pa prvi slovenski misijonar med ameriškimi Indijanci škof Friderik Baraga in pa škof Anton M. Slomšek.
Povedala sta nam tudi, da je to zadnja kapela, ki je še na razpolago in je bila namenjena za Slovence in če jo mi ne vzamemo je že druga skupina pripravljena z denarjem da jo prevzame. Celotna cena kapele je $70,-
000	00; do konca tega leta moramo zbrati $25,000.00 kot prvo plačilo, ostalih $45,000.00 pa bomo lahko plačali pozneje. Navzoči so bili vsi mnenja, da gremo takoj na delo in zberemo prvo potrebno vsoto, da si tako zagotovimo prostor.
Apeliramo na društva in posameznike, da se velikodušno odzovete z denarnimi prispevki. Vsak naj prispeva po svoji moči. Če bi vsak Slovenec, kolikor nas je v Ameriki, prispeval samo en dolar, bi bila potrebna vsota skupaj v prav kratkem času. Vsak najmanjši dar je dobrodošel.
Na tem sestanku je bil tudi izvoljen stalni centralni odbor in sicer: predsednik Joseph Nemanicli, prvi podpredsednik John Sušnik, drugi podpredsednik Matt Roes-man, tajnik Frank A. Turek, blagajničarka Antonia Turek, zapisnikarica Rose Želodec, nadzorniki John Pestot-nik, Anton Oblak in Mary Jeraj; za publiciteto: Frank A. Turek, Uroš Roesman in Joseph Zelle.
Organizirani so bili že krajevni odbori v Washington«, 1). C. in v New Yorku in upamo, da se bodo kmalu oglasili tudi iz drugih slovenskih naselbin v Ameriki.

St. 6, Barberton, Ohio — Zadnja seja je bila slabo obiskana, ne vem, kam ste vse šle? Upati je, da boste prišle na prihodnjo sejo.
Bolna je sestra Jennie Gerbec in se točasno nahaja v bolnici. Sestra Margaret Gerbec se sedaj že boljše počuti. S soprogom se odpravljata v sočno Florido. Vse ji želimo, da se bo tam boljše počutila. To pa za zaključek: Jože tam na polju orje; misel vleče ga čez morje, oj čez morje, tja v deželo, kjer živi se bolj veselo. Ko v Ameriko pripluje, sliši tam glasove tuje in berači tam so tudi, komaj temu se načudi.
Srčno voščilo vsem za Božič in Novo leto. S toplimi pozdnavi vsem zavednim članicam.

St. 10, Cleveland, O. — Ob priliki proslave 40 letnice podr. v Barber-tonu, smo se tudi me udeležile slavnosti obletnice. Bile smo res gostoljubno sprejete in postrežene z dobrim kosilom ter smo se dobre volje vračale domov.
Udeležile smo se tudi sestanka 13. oktobra v dvorani Sv. Vida. Na platnu so nam kazali slike najlepše cerkve Matere Božje v katedrali v Washington«, DC. Sedaj je v načrtu tudi kapela za vse Slovence v Ameriki. To je prav lepa ideje in upajmo, da se bo uresničila. Gotovo bo, če jo bomo vsi podprli.
Drage sestre, v tem mesecu so volitve za leto 19G8. Prosim, da bi se u-deležile v polnem številu, ko bomo volile novi odbor. Rade bi pridobile kaj novih članic. Depo so vabljene tudi novo naseljenke, da bi se nam pridružile in da bi imele tudi Božično zabavo in izmenjavo I dol. daril.
Ob koncu Vas vse članice prav prisrčno pozdravljam in Vam želim vesele Božične praznike in blagoslovljeno Novo leto in mir v 1968.

teh jesenskih dneh, ko se po raznih državah vreme spreminja v mrzlejši tok, se pri nas v Cal. oglaša Indijansko poletje. Bele krizanteme se kar črez noč razcvetejo in klanjajo svetlemu soncu črez dan, kakor neveste v snežnobelih pajčolanih.
Pri naši podr. so sestre priredile lep večer s tombolo in dobrimi okusiti. Naša priljubljena državna predsednica, Rose Scofl' je veliko lepega pripovedovala iz konvencije, koliko dobrega se je ukrenilo v prid Zveze. Navzoč je bil tudi gost, profesor Klemenčič iz Ljubljane. Prišel je iz Kanade, kamor so ga povabile tamoš-nje univerze na predavanje. Prof. Klemenčič je po svoji stroki gozdni inženir in je o tem spisal knjige. Po univerzah v Kanadi, ga imenujejo “oče gozdarstva” (Father of forestry). Govori 8 jezikov in je zelo skromen izobraženec. Bil je gost Johna Jud-nicli in naše pevke Eni Judnich. Jud-
ničeva sta zelo čislana na samo tukaj, ampak tudi v domovini Sloveniji. Profesor je pohvalil San Francisco, kot najlepše na svetu in ni se mogel nagledati tisočletnih dreves, ker kaj takega se ne vidi povsod. Ko je prišel v Slovenski dom, je takoj spoznal sliko, ki je črez celo steno gostinske sobe. To je slika njegove rojstne vasi, Lokvlce pri Metliki v Sloveniji. Točno je imenoval vsako stezo, kozolce pri Metliki v Slovenji in hišice. Judničeva pa sta mu razkazala zanimivosti Kalifornije.
Več naših starejših sorojakov nas je zapustilo. Pred kratkim smo pokopali moža naše častne sestre Marj Slane. Pokojni Martin je odšel po dolgem trpljenju. Bog ga je rešil težke bolezni. Doma je bil iz Rosal-nic pri Metliki in dočakal je visoko starost 85 let. Z Mary sta bila poročena 52 let in vsa leta njene bolezni ji je pridno stregel kot dober in plemeniti mož. S solznimi očmi smo spremljali tega vrlega moža na zadnji poti. — v istem tednu pa je umrl tudi g. Klepec iz ugledne družine Klepec, Troja, Nanut in Udovich. Je tudi dočakal veliko starost 79 let.
Zapustila nas je tudi sestra Polda Rauch, ki zapušča žalujoči hčerki (obe poročene). Imela je krasne vence in lep pogreb, kakor tudi ostali pokojni rojaki. -— Izgubili smo tudi častno članico našega društva sv. Marije, sestro Anna Filipčič in ses. Angela Udovich. Zelo nas je zadela smrt Angele, dobre žene in matere, pa je tako nenadoma ugasnila luč njenega življenja. Zapušča moža Justina, katerega brat je duhovnik-jezuit. Dva sinova sta poročena. Dobremu možu, ki ga je ženina izguba globoko prizadela in vsej družini naše iskreno sožalje. Enako vsem ostalim prizadetim družinam, posebno še sestri Slane. Svojo mamo je tudi izgubil umetnik-organist Aleš Šimenc. K sreči jo je še videl na kratkem obisku Slovenije, par mesecev pred njeno smrtjo. Iskreno sožalje od vseh pevcev in od vseh, ki poznajo organista in to čislano družino. Tako se pogosto odmakne eden za drugim in vrste naših pionirjev se krčijo. Postali smo tako navezani, da se bojimo eni za drugega.
Lep pozdrav ses. Mary Dreshar v Chicagu in upam, da se je dobro pozdravila.
V	domovini mnogo potujejo, bolj kot v prejšnjih časih. Nečakinja mi piše iz Švice, kjer študira jezike in ena pa	iz	Londona. Mladina se	izobražuje	in	modernizira.	Njihova	domovina	Slovenija pa je	slikovita	in
nepozabna,	kakor našega	pesnika	Si-
mona Gregorčiča vzdih:

Božič je dan veselih pozdravov, veselih, voščil in veselega razpoloženja. Noben drug letni čas nima toliko
toplote in domačnosti za otroška srca in odrasle kakor
božični. Srce odpre vrata prelepim spominom iz pre-teklosti. V duhu zremo v tisto dobo ko smo kot otroci zrli svetlojasnih oči v jaslice v kotu, v drevešček na ....	mizi. V duhu prisluhnemo pritrkavanju zvonov. V spo-

eg)	pozabili. Duša nam na božični večer zatrepeta v skrivaj	nostnem razpoloženju. Nič čudnega, da se tako z nami
godi. Na božično noč je svetu zasijala nova luč, novo upanje. Nebo se je čisto sklonilo k zemlji. Mati je -jjt’	povila otroka in ga položila v jasli, ker ni bilo prostora
v hiši. O tem otroku je angel božji oznanil: “Rojen vam ■••••	je zveličar.” To je bil in je še vir veselja in dobre

od ljudi v katere so zaupali, razočarani nad krutostjo življenja, zbegani zaradi stalnih sprememb, so zaprli svoja srca ne samo zaupanju v so človeka ampak tudi svojemu Bogu o katerem pravijo,	da jih je zapustil v	•••„
potrebi in	ko so ga klicali. Človek	se lahko upira Bogu
in ga ne	posluša posebno takrat	kadar trka na dušo	O
kot otrok.	Ali stara resnica je, da	kdor Bogu otroku ne
odpre, tudi velikega Boga ne sprejme.

Št. 14, Euclid, O. — Naša novem-berska seja je bila bolj pičlo obiskana. Gotovo so ostale doma zaradi slabega vremena, ker ta dan je bilo k'ar precej mrzlo, saj drugače je pri nas redno dobra udeležba.
Naša card party je tudi za nami. Bila je precej uspešna, saj so igralci dvorano do kraja napolnili. Tudi mnogo lepih nagrad so odnesli domov.
Našim pridnim članicam naj gre pa tudi iskrena zahvala, ker so tako pridno delale v kuhinji. Tam je bilo potrebno pripraviti kar stotine sendvičev.
V tem mesecu smo izgubile kar dve naši članici, to so: Mrs. Mary Sapko in Julija Vidrih Naj obe v miru božjem počivata. Preostali družini pa naše globoko sožalje.
Naše pevsko društvo lepo napreduje, čeprav od kraja ni kazalo, da bo šlo naprej, ker so bili naši glasovi sko-ro v pokoju, toda ko smo jih začele ogl'ajati, se pa čimdalje bolje sliši jo naše zastarele strune, tako da ni rečeno, da ne bi prišli do kakega koncerta. Saj upamo tako. To tudi dobro dene našemu telesu, da ne mislimo vedno na naše vsakdanje skrbi.
Zahvala za ustanovitev pevskega društva velja predvsem A. Turek in Mrs. Boštjan. Lepo se tudi zahvalimo našemu pevovodju, g. F. Go-renšku, ker je z nami tako potrpežljiv. Včasih se moram kar smejati, kadar pričnemo s kako novo pesmijo, pa gremo kar vsaka v svojo smer. G. Gorenšek pa zamahne z roko in pravi, tako ne bo šlo in se tako hitro ustavimo, kakor da bi nas kdo po glavi udaril. On pa se okoli obrne in je spet dober in nas spravi na pravo pot.
V good tajm blagajno pa so darovale: Mrs. Čebulj, Mrs. Klemenčič in Mrs. Jacobs.
Vsem skupaj lep pozdrav in vesele Božične praznike.

Št. 15, Cleveland, O. — Oktobrova seja je bila dobro obiskana. Dobila sem pismo od Mrs. Prisland, ki čestita k naši 40 letnici ustanovitve. Podr. je bila ustanovljena 7. novembra. Srčna vam hvala, Mrs. Prisland za čestitke.
Na seji smo razmotrivale in sklenile, da bo enkrat v mesecu juniju proslava obletnice ustanovitve, toda več o tem bo sklenjeno na letni seji v decembru.
Prebrano je bilo pismo od gl. preds. Antonije Turek, ki predlaga, da podpremo nabirko za slovensko narodno kapelico v Washingtonu, D. C. Nič dokončnega ni bilo sklenjeno.
Vsem bolnim članicam želim ljubega zdravja.
Vse članice ste tudi vabljene na januarsko sejo, ko bodo brani letni računi, da boste slišale kako stoji naše društvo.
Po seji nas pa je pogostila ses. Angela Stražar, ki je obhajala rojstni
dan. Prinesla je kek, krofe tako dobre in svit brendi in vse kar spada zraven. Mrs. Jerič pa kavo, tako smo bile lepo pogoščene. Vse smo bile vesele in dolgo smo prepevale za njen rojstni dan. Srčna hvala za vse in da bi ga še veliko let zdrava dočakala.
Duhovnemu vodji, vsem glavnim odbornicam in članicam po širni A-meriki želim zdrave Božične praznike, da bi jih v božjem miru preživeli in blagoslovljeno Novo leto. Posebna voščila članicam pri št. 15.

Št. 19, Eveleth, Minn. Vludno ste vabljene vse članice na sejo v decembru ki se bo vršila na 14. ob pol dveh popoldne na mojem domu, kjer zborujemo običajno. Udeležite se, da se skupno dogovorimo kako bomo delovale v prihodnjem letu, saj imamo več važnih zadev za urediti. Vrši se tudi volitev odbora za 19G8. Mogoče bi bilo več zanimanja pod novim odborom. Po seji bomo imele pripravljen prigrizek in za razvedrilo bomo zapele lepe božične pesmi. Le pridite!
Božični prazniki so pred nami, katerih se vsak veseli naj bo mlad ali starejši. V naših srcih je gotovo želja, da bi v zdravju dočakali prihodnji Božič. Nihče ne ve svoje u-sode. Letošnji Božič bo v mnogih domovih bolj otožen, ker bo manjkalo tiste, ki so odšli v večnost. Sam Bog ve, koliko nas bo poklicanih v prihodnjem letu. Želim vsem glavnim odbornicam, duhovnemu svetovalcu najlepše praznike, da bi jih praznovali v radosti. Vsem bolnim želimo, da bi skoraj okrevale. V bolnišnici se nahajajo sestre Angela Vesel, Mary Sherse in Annie Benchina. V Nursing domu so po sestre Antonija Nem-gar, Strahan, Setnika in Drobnich. Vem, da je več članic bolnih tudi po svojih domovih. Naj vas novorojeno Dete blagoslovi in to ne samo ob Božiču, ampak vsak bodoči dan vašega življenja.

No. 20, Joliet, III. — Zelo je nas presenetila vest, da je po dveh mesecih v bolnišnici, bil poklican v večnost naš faran in dobro poznani Anton Golohitsh iz North Chicago in Jackson ceste. Dočakal je komaj 58 let. Bil je zaposljen pri Caterpillar Tractor Co. kot uradnik. Prej sta bila z očetom Anton Golobitsh Sr., lastnika Golobitsh Coal Company, do očetove smrti v letu 1933. Pok. oče Anton Sr. je bil pionir naše fare in tudi eden izmed prvih gl. odbornikov KSKJ. Pokojni Anton Jr. je bil edini sin v družini. Poleg žene Genevieve, rojene Benedik, pokojni zapušča dva sinova Antona in Dennisa ter ostarelo mater Mrs. Mary Golobitsh, roj. Eržen. Čeprav je mama Golobitsh že v visokih letih, je še vedno
dobro ohranjena. Ob sinovi izgubi sta ji v tolažbo dva vnuka ter mala prav-vnukinja. Vnuk Anton se je poročil pred enim letom. Žena pok. in mama sta obe dolgo letne naše članice, kakor tudi Benediktova družina. Pok. Anton je bil dolga leta do smrti tudi cerkveni odbornik in aktiven v cerkvenih prireditvah. Bil je član raznih organizacij. Zapušča tudi sina v Colorado. Naj pokojnim sveti večna luč, vsem prizadetim pa naše sožalje.
Dne 11. okt. so se članice Rožnega venca udeležile romanja na Sveto Goro v Wisconsin. Bilo jih je natlačeno polno v velikem busu. Med njimi je bilo polovico članic naše podružnice ter odbornice Rožnega venca ki so tudi naše članice. Spremljal nas je naš župnik Monsignor M. J. Butala, kateremu gre zahvala za vodstvo. Nazaj gredoč smo se ustavili v novi cerkvi Sv. Janeza, kjer je župnik Rev. Claude Okorn, duhovni svetovalec Ženske Zveze. Razkazal nam je veliko cerkev, moderno šolo in okolico. Bilo je lepo videti napredek naših Slovencev te župnije in p. Okorn, zahvala za prijazno sprejem.
Letos se lahko imenuje konvenčno leto, ne samo za Žensko Zvezo katere konvencije so se udeležile naše de-legatinje in članice, da si tudi ogledajo našo prestolico v Washingtonu, ter namestnica Josephine Sumic ki je naša blagajničarka in katera je potem se udeležila konvencijo Grand Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Eagles v Independence, Mo. Pri turi so se ustavile delegatinje tudi v Harry Truman Library. Ta konvencija je bila ena največjih, katere se je Jo Sumic u-deležila.
Nato je bila delegatinja za jolietsko podružnico Hrvatske Bratske Zajedni-ce, vršeče se v hotelu Pitts, Pittsburgh, Pa. naša dolgo-letna članica Mary Bo-zlch iz Cornelia St. Njen namestnik je bil soprog Walter Bozich. Ona je bila v odboru za peticije. Konvencija se je vršila od 18 to 23 septembra.
Naše čestitke tudi Mrs. Anne A-riagno, hčerki Mrs. Mary Kunstek ki je bila letos izvoljena za mater pri Am. Slovenskem Domu.
Tajnica na seji poroča, da smo letos izgubile 11 članic, katere so bile poklicane v večnost. Predsednica o-menja, da bi bilo lepo, da se to število nadomesti z novimi.
Dalje se poroča, da so bolne in so sedaj na domu, Mrs. Mary Plankar, Mrs. Mary Mutz, ki se je zlomila v križu, ko je padla iz vstopnic, ter Mrs. Caroline Munich. Miss Katherine Butala je bila premiščena iz Chicaga v Joliet v St. Patrick Retirement Home. Tu jo lahko članice obiščejo v sobi 433. Želimo vsem bolnim, da čimprej okrevajo in se veselijo med nami.
Tajnica dalje sporoča skupno svoto katera se je zbrala pri prodaji listkov za pomoč konvenčnih stroškov pri podružnici. Prodale se sledeče: Emma Planinšek 60 knjig, Frances Gaspich

Vrle newjorske članice so v oktobru lepo proslavile 30 obletnico podr. V prvi vrsti so odbornice in sicer druga od leve Betty Birk zapisnikarica, tajnica Kristina Kepic in mati blagajničarke Ana Kepic, nato predsednica Angela Voje, podpredsednica Ivanka Svet ter nadzornice Pavline Krai in Josephine Kukovec. Na koncu sedita Mrs. L. Križel, ki je 82 let mlada ter je bila letos v Sloveniji in Mrs. D. Zajc, ki je 81 let mlada.

Na seji se je sklenilo, da se ponovno kažejo slike iz Washingtona v mesecu Februarju in tudi druge slike iz Floride. Že sedaj se vabi članice na to sejo.
Tajnica opominja članice, ki nimajo porovnano za to leto, da pridejo na sejo poravnati svoj dolg. Seja bo v nedeljo 17. decembra, da ne bo treba katero suspendirat. Letos gre k koncu in ni več kot prav, da se potrudite, da imate za letos vse plačano, da ne bo treba Vas vedno prositi za zaostale mesece ker to ni prijetno. Same premislite kako bi rade kolektale, ako bi bile na tem mestu.
Želim Vam vsem članicam in družinam prav vesele božične praznike. Naj Vas Bog blagoslovi z zdravjem, in dobro voljo.

Št. 21, Cleveland, O. — Zgleda, da članice pozabijo, da se naše seje vršijo prvo sredo v mesecu. Zadnjo se jo je vodila podpredsednica, T. Lach.
S potrtimi srci smo mislile na našo pridno in delavno predsednico Ančko Palčič, ki se nahaja v St. John bol nišnici. Udeležila se je dne 7. okt. pogreba njene sosede Mrs. Josephine Slokar in nazaj grede jo je prav pred njeno hišo zadela kap ter so jo hitro odpeljali v z ambulanco v bolnica, kjer se njeno zdravje počasi zboljšu-
je, toda upamo, ko bo ta dopis v Zarji, da bo že doma in da bo za našo Božičnico že polnoma zdrava.
V	oktobru je imelo več članic svoje rojstne dneve. Navzoča na seji je bila Mrs. Lach ter smo ji zapele pesem rojstnega dneva. Hvala lepa za glaž rujnega. Vsem pa zdravje in vesele dni.
Božičnica bo 6. decembra.
S. Ž. Z. je na konvenciji sprožila idejo, da bi Slovenci postavili s prostovoljnimi darovi svojo kapelico v Marjini katedrali v Washingtonu, D. C. Sama sem videla, da ima že precej narodov svoje narodne kapelice, kar je res izredno lepo. Pri naši pod-dužnici smo se odločile za pomoč.
Mrs. C. Brodnik daruje ročno izdelan afgan, s tem bomo imele na listke. Daruje se za kapelico $100. Priporoča pa se, da tudi posamezne darujejo v ta namen. Lepa hvala Mrs. Brodnik za ta dar.
Vsem bolnim članicam želimo zdravje. Žalujočim pa naše iskreno sožalje.

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Dnevi in meseci kar hitro tečejo naprej. Tako se tudi me staramo, ker nas zapuščajo moči. Mladina pa je zaposlena pri svojem delu in aktivnosti. Vsekakor bi bilo dobro, da bi naše mlajše članice prišle na sejo in prevzele odbor, ker bi tako prinesle več živahnega življenje in aktivnosti v podr. Tudi razne prireditve bi zopet lahko imele, ker naša podr. ima do-
bre članice, samo smo opešale, da se ne moremo več redno udeleževati sej. Pridite vse na prihodnjo sejo. Točen čas bo objavljen v lokalnem časopisu, ker bomo imele tudi zamenjavo Božičnih daril. Vsaka naj prinese dar v vrednosti enega dolarja. Po seji bomo imele prigrizek. Pridite vse, saj tiste, ki se še nikoli niste udeležile te prireditve, boste videle, da so naše seje zanimive in družabnost vesela. Tudi prosim vse tiste, ki ste v zaostanku s članarino, da bi poravnale svoj asesment, ker leto gre k zatonu in jaz moram urediti knjige, ter jih dati nadzornicam v pregled.
V	bolnišnici je prestala operacijo Evelyn Kastigar. V bolnici se nahaja tudi Mary Savnik in Antonia Hoef-ferle. Iz bolnice se je vrnila Mary Kastigar. Vsem bolnim sestram želimo ljubo zdravje. Enako velja tudi vsem ki bolehate za flu na domu.
Želim vsem vesele Božične praznike in srečno ter zdravo Novo leto.

Št. 25, Cleveland, O. Zopet se bliža mesec december, ko se volijo odbori za prihodnje leto, da skrbijo za članstvo. Vabim vas vse naše dobre članice, da pridete na to sejo.
Pri naši podr. smo imele prav izredni slučaj, ko sta Mr. in Mrs. Anton Strniša ,dne 28. okt. praznovala GO letnico svoje poroke. Obema lepo čestitamo in želimo, da bi še več let dočakala zdrava in zadovoljna. Mrs. Dorothy Strniša je naša ustanoviteljica in je bila 17 let blagajničarka pri podr. in je sedaj že več let
zapisnikarica, ki prav dobro vodi zapisnik sej v zadovoljstvo vseh naših članic. Iz vsega srca ji želimo ljubega zdravja.
Imamo pa še en par pri naši podr., Mr. in Mrs. Kozel, ki sta že G4 let poročena. Naj oba para še naprej Rog in Marija podpirata.
V	novembru sta praznovale rojstne dneve naše dobre društvene delavke Mrs. Frances Majer iz Edna, 80 letni rojstni dan in Mrs. Anna Zalar. Vse jima želimo še naprej ljubega zdravja.
Prosim članice, da bi vpisale svoje hčerke v podr., ker nam vsako leto precej članic umre, da bi tako nadomestile vrzeli, ki nastanejo za njimi. Vsaka bi morala biti ponosna, da spada k svoji lastni Ženski Zvezi. Poglejmo Slovakinje koliko članstva i-majo po Ameriki, 92 tisoč, ker skupaj držijo in so ponosne na svoj rod. Tako bi mogle tudi Slovenke skupaj držati in uspeh bi bil zagotovjen.
Sedaj je v teku kampanja za novo članstvo. Prosim, drage članice, da pridobite novih in vse tiste, ki ste v zaostanku s plačilom, pa lepo prosim, da bi poravnale in bile dobre članice Zveze.
Vsem skupaj želim prav vesele Božične praznike in blagoslovljeno Novo leto, vsem glavnim odbornicam, našim članicam, našemu duhovnemu vodju, Rev. Klavdij Okoren in vsemu članstvu.

Št. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. — Nahajamo se v mesecu decembru in v času ko se vršijo glavne seje in božičnice. Naša letna seja bo v torek dne 19. dec. ob 8 uri zvečer v navadnih prostorih. Pridite vse, da se malo pogovorimo in slišale boste letna poro čila in vsak dober nasvet bomo z veseljem sprejele. Tudi bomo imele i-zmenjavo daril v vrednosti enega dolarja, da bo več zabave in veselja, saj vsaka je radovedna kaj bo našla vtako sezonskih lepih zavitkih. Imele bomo tudi malo prigrizka in tudi mogoče malo sladkega vinca. Torej le pridite, drage sestre. Ob tej priliki se bo volilo tudi odbor za prihodnje leto, zato pripeljite s seboj mlade, da bi prevzele odbor. Jaz bi želela predati drugi, saj sem že predlogo v odboru, predsednica že od leta 1950, zato bi želela, da si izvolite novo predsednico.
Sedaj pa nekaj o naši pensilvanij-ski konvenciji, katere gostiteljica je bila tukaj naša podr, št. 2G. Zvezin dan in državna konvencija se je vršila z banketom v tukajšnjem Slovenskem domu. Bila je lepa udeležba in zastopanih je bilo 5 podružnic. Najlepša hvala Strabane in Meadow-land za tako lepo udeležbo in Johns-
town, ki so prišle s svojim busom, in tudi iz North side je bila lepa u-deležba, enako tudi Universal in tudi naše članice so se udeležile v lepem številu in pripeljale s seboj svoje boljše polovice, tako da smo bili vsaj ljudje. Med nami je bila tudi glavna tajnica ga. Albina Novak, ki je prišla tak daleč tam iz daljne Chicage pomagat nam slaviti ta pomembni dan. Imela je krasen govor, le škoda, da je bila tako malo časa med nami. A-pelirala je tudi, da bi se Slovenci zavzeli za narodno kapelica Marije Pomagaj v Washingtonu, DC. V ta namen se bo v kratkem začel zbirati denar. Upamo, da bo lep odziv.
Hvala lepa tudi našemu župniku Father Demšarju in stoloravnatelju Mr. Frank Lokarju, državni predsednici Mrs. Mary Tomšič, radijski napovedovalki Mrs. Skerlong, glavni odbornici KSKJ, Miss Frances Lo-kar, vsem res lepa hvala za lepe govore. Sedaj pa prav lepa hvala našim odbornicam in članicam, ki so delale, da je šlo vse v najlepšem redu naprej in pomagale mize okrasiti. Posebna hvala članicam Agnes Wi-dina, Josephine Jurgel in moji hčerki Ann, ki so pomagale napraviti tako krasne šopke, ki ga je dobila vsaka udeleženka in tudi moške nismo pozabile, tudi oni so dobili buttoners. Tako je bilo vse lepo okrašeno Mislim, da bo drugo leto prevzela podr. št. 88 v Johnstown. Torej na svidenje.
Vsem gl. uradnicam, duh. svetovalcu Rev. Okornu in vsem članicam vesele Božične praznike in blagoslovljeno Novo leto.

Št. 30, Aurora, III. — Star slovenski pregovor pravi, če kdo govoriti kaj ne ve, pa o vremenu kaj pove. Tako bi tudi jaz lahko precej napisala
o	letošnjem jesenskem vremenu. Še v oktobru smo imeli 2 inče snega (tako smo videli, da bo tudi letos bel), potem je pa vsak dan bilo toliko dežja, da je bilo vse mokro, vlažno in nezdravo posebno za starejše ljudi, ki bolehajo na revmatizmu. Vsekakor upamo, da bo še nekaj lepih dni pred Božičem.
Z veseljem poročam, da se je Mr. Wakerline kar dobro pozdravil po o-peraciji. Bolezen pa se je menda preselila k Račičevim. Kar oba nista pri dobrem zdravju. Obema in vsem bolnikom želim ljubega zdravja!
Vesele Božične praznike želim vsem članicam in njihovim družinam in vsem, ki mi vsako leto pošljejo toliko lepili kartic in še lepših voščil. Bojim se, da ne bom mogla pošiljati kart, ker sem tudi slabega zdravja. Dopolnila sem mojih 81 let.

Št. 41, Cleveland, O. — Nepričakovano je odšla k večnemu počitku ses. Angela Markič, ki zapušča soproga in dve hčerki z družinami. Ses. Olga Benčič je pa izgubila ljubljenega brata. Vsem žalujočim naše iskreno sožalje, pokojnima pa večni mir in pokoj.
Vse katere še dolgujete na članarini ste prošene, da isto poravnate pred koncem leta.
Lepo se zahvalimo ses. Mary Ben-car za lepo darilo v prid blagajne in ji iskreno želimo boljšega zdravja v bodočnosti.
Naša zapis. Ančka Rebolj, se po vrnitvi iz bolnice zdravi na domu ter ji želimo najboljšega zdravja v najkrajšem času, enako želimo vsem, katere se ne počuutite dobro.
V	blagajno sta darovali ses. Albina Mršnik in Mary Rogel. Iskrena hvala obema.
Članice ste prošene, da bi v večjem številu posečale naše seje, posebno pa ne pozabite priti na letno sejo 5. decembra v navadnem prostoru, kjer bomo imele tudi božičnico.

Št. 49, Noble, O. -— Naše seje se navadno vršijo pri sestri Gombach.
V	oktobru pa smo napravili izjemo in imele smo letno sejo pri sestri Jennie Kosten v Mentor, O. Bila je zelo vesela, ker zaradi bolj slabega zdravja ne vozi automobila in bi ji bilo žal, če se ne bi mogla udeležiti seje. Imele smo kar lepo udeležbo in izvrstno postrežbo, kar tudi nekaj šteje. Naša blagajna je kar v dobrem stanju, zato nam ni treba prirejati kakih prireditev.
Imamo še nekaj bolnih članic, katerim želimo iz srca ljubega zdravja. Tudi naša podpredsednica Mary Goin-bach mora počivati. Je bila pri nesreči zadeta od automobila, ko je šla preko ceste k sv. maši v cerkev sv. Kristine. Sreča, da ni bilo hujega, razen zlomljenega rebra in bila je tudi zelo pretresena, kar je v njenih letih bolj nevarno. Upam in želim, da ko pride ta dopis v Zarjo, da bo že pri boljšem zdravju.
Ker se bližajo lepi Božični prazniki, želim vsein odbornicam in članicam, posebno pri št. 49, da bi jih v zdravju in zadovoljstvu praznovale
v	krogu vaših družin.

Št. 54, Warren, O. — Kako hitro čas beži, v tem času ko to pišem se narava pripravlja na zimsko spanje. Vsi Sveti so že za nami, ko smo se spomnili svojih dragih z molitvijo. Veliko jih je že odšlo po večno
plačilo, kakor pravi pesem: Blagor mu, ki se spočije, v črni zemlji, v grobu spi, — lepše sonce njemu sije, lepša Zarja rumeni . . . Bog pokliče vse brez izjeme, če si še tako zaposlen v tej solzni dolini. Naj vsem našim pokojnim sorodnikom in članicam sveti večna luč!
Na okt. seji sta nas pogostile se-tre Vickie Zuga in Jennie Golden. Prinesle so tudi lepa darila. Iskrena hvala.
Kot predsednica apeliram na vse članice ,da bi se bolj pogosto udeleževale sej. Novembra smo imele party za ročno blagajno. Slavljenke rojstnih dnevov Jean Ponikvar in Josephine Kassan bodo servirale. Za de-cembersko sejo je darovala Mary Ponikvar ročno izdelan krasen pillow za zofo. Vsaka naj kupi nekaj listkov, da bo v pomoč ročne blagajne. Ker veselic ne moremo imeti, zato pa si na ta način pomagamo, da se ne bo blagajna osušila. Vsaka članica prispeva 5 centov na mesec, toda vsaka bo razumela, da si s tem malim prispevkom ne da kupiti cvetljic za bolne, ob času poroda, poroke in srebrne poroke ter v slučaju smrti. Torej bodimo res sestre in pomagajmo po svojih najbolših močeh in ne pustimo vso odgovornost na peščico članic.
čeprav sem malo pozna, vendar želim naši vrli urednici Corinne Leskovar, preds. Tončki Turek in gl. taj. A. Novak vse najboljše k njihovim rojstnim dnevom in še na mnoga leta. Enako želim vse najboljše vsem našim članicam, ki so' obhajale rojstne dneve, med njimi tudi Jennie Shine, ki se vedno rada udeležuje naših sej in je naša najstarejša članica. Bog vas živi!
Naša podpreds. se je morala podvreči težki operaciji, zdaj se zdravi doma. Želimo ji ljubega zdravja, saj ona je aktivna sestra, Mary Waltko.
Tudi Ančki Palcic v Clevelandu, ki se nahaja v St. John Hospital, želimo, da se ji zdravje kmalu na boljše obrne. Bila je v veliki nevarnosti, toda hvala Bogu, zdaj se ji zdravje vrača. Naj se zahvalim tudi Mary Vehar, ki me obvešča o Ančkinem zdravju in je šla z nami v bolnico, bila nam je za kažipota in gostiteljico. Vsem bolnim želimo ljubega zdravja.
Za božičnico bomo imele “cover dish". Prinesite darilo v vrednosti $1 za izmenjavo ter tudi pribor za sebe. Seja se bo vršila 19. dec. ob G uri zvečer pri Betty Vadas na Brier St.

Št. 68, Fairport, Ohio. — Poročilo iz naše mesečne seje dne 15. okt. Zbralo se nas je lepo število članic in pristopile sta dve novi članici, katere smo z veseljem sprejele v našo sredo. Upam, da v tem letnem času, ko ne moremo ven v naravo, da se nas bo vedno več zbralo na naših sejah. V zimskem času tudi ne moremo balin-cati, kar je bila naša zabava v poletnem času v Fairportu.
Na seji je bilo sklenjeno glede 16. novembra. Sklenjeno je bilo glede domačega dela klobas, rajževih, krvavih in mesenih, da okrepimo blagajno. Vse rade delamo, zato je prav, da pomagamo za skupno stvar.
Predsednica Jennie Mohorčič se bo z možem preselila v Painesville na No St. Clair St., sedaj bo blizu Fair-porta in se bomo večkrat obiskale.
Vsem članicam želim ljubega zdravja v zimskem času, ker zima je najslabši čas, posebno za nas, ki se počutimo bolj pri ta starih in nas rado zebe.

Št. 71, Strabane, Pa. — Jesen je nam zdi, da je že za nami, čeprav je včasih še kar lepo vreme, smo vendar na pragu zime.
Dne 15. nov. smo izgubile dolgoletno članico Josephine Beneš. Pokojna je bila naša dobra članica, toda več zadnjih let bolj rahlega zdravja. Imela je lep pogreb. Naše članice so se v lepem številu udeležile pogreba in večer pred pogrebom, smo ob njeni krsti molile rožni venec. Zapušča žalujočega soproga, 2 sinova, 3 Merke, od katerih je ena naša članica. Družini naše globoko sožalje. Blaga pokojnica pa naj v miru počiva.
December je značilni mesec naše Zveze. Dne 19. dec. poteče 41 let odkar je SŽZ ustanovljena po naši gospej M. Prisland. Bog naj ji nakloni še mnogo let zdravja in veselih obletnic.
Sestre Frances Batista in Mary Chesnik so že par let resno bolane. Prosim, da ju obiščite, kadar vam čas dopušča. Enako Anna Strle, Frances Tomsic, in Mrs. Kogovšek. Njim in vsem bolnim želim ljubega zdravja.
Tem potom vabim članice naše podr., da se v velikem številu udeležite letne seje, ki se bo vršila 13. dec. v navadnih prostorih. Na tej seji bo podano letno poročilo odbornic in volitev odbora. Pridite in izvolite si dober odbor po vaši volji in pridobite nove članice.
Želim srečne in blagoslovljene Božične praznike gl. odbornicam, Kev. K. Okornu, duhovenmu vodju in vsem članicam SZŽ, posebno- še urednici Corinne in njeni družini.

Št. 77, Pittsburgh, Pa. — Vabimo članice naše podr, na letno sejo, ki se bo vršila dne 14. dec. v navadnih prostorih. Lepo bi bilo, da bi se te važne seje udeležile vse članice, da bi se skupno pogovorile kako se bo delalo prihodnje leto. Za rešiti imamo več važnih stvari za dobrobit nas vseh. Isti večer bomo praznovale tudi Božičnico ter si izmenjale darila naj bodo v vrednosti ne manj kot
1	dolar.
Tiste članice, ki ste zaostale s svojim asesmentom, ste prošene, da prav gotovo poravnate do konca tega leta. Veste, da tajnica ne sme zalagati več kot za 3 meseca za nobeno članico,.
Vsem članicam in vašim družinam, želim prav vesele Božične praznike in Novo leto, da bi nam vsem Bog dal ljubega zdravja.

št. 84, New York, N. Y. — Dolgo se že nisem oglasila, zato pa imam sedaj več za poročati. Dne 8. oktobra smo praznovale 30 letnico ustanovitve naše podružnice. Večina članic, ki so bile v prvem odboru, niso več med nami kakor tudi Anton Šu-bel, ki je to idejo za ustanovitev Slovenske Ženske organizacije prinesel iz Clevelanda, tudi on ni več med živimi. Naj bo vsem lahka ameriška zemlja. Na proslavi nas je bilo navzočih 50 članic in prijateljev naše podružnice. Imamo blizu 80 članic, toda	so zelo raztresene	po Long	Island	in up state	okoli	200 milj	so
nekatere oddaljene.
Imele smo se prav dobro, saj se z nekaterimi že dolgo nismo videle. Za zabavo pa sta igrala na harmoniko moj svak Frank Birk (mož moje hčerke Betty) in moj vnuk Steven. Hvala lepa. Čas nam je hitro minul, toda spomin na 30 letnico podružnice, pa nam bo ostal dolgo v živem in lepem spominu. Za spomin smo se tudi slikale.	(Slika je na	drugi	strani.)
Vse članice lepo	prosim, da se ude-
ležite seje dne 13. decembra na Forest St. pri Bar. Grili ob 8 zvečer.
Če se selite pa prosim, prinesite oziroma pošljite vaše nove naslove tajnici Ani Kepic, da bo imela prave naslove in da ne bo pritožb, da ne dobivate Zarje.
Veliko je že pisanega od naše konvencije meseca maja v Washingtonu, D. C., zato bom samo toliko omenila, da taki konvenciji še nisem prisostvovala. Deležne smo bile nepozabnih vtisov, ogledov mestnih zanimivosti in vse je bilo točno pripravljeno za nas, če se ne motim so nas prevažali z 10 busi. Vedno sem si želela videti našo prestolico in tako se mi je sedaj nudila tako izredna prilika. Lepa hvala vsem iz glavnega urada in čla-

lileam v Washingtonu, ki so pripravile, da smo si mogle ogledati vse zanimivosti in da je konvencija tako lepo izpadla. Vse je potekalo mirno in dostojno. Tega ne bom nikoli pozabila, kakor tudi druge delegatinje so mi omenile, vse so bile izredno zadovoljne. Hvala še enkrat, Corrine in vsem drugim, ki so pomagale.
Voščim vsem glavnim odbornicam, urednici, članicam št. 84 ter vsem članicam SŽZ vesele Božične praznike in srečno blagoslovljeno Novo leto.

Št. 100, Fontana, Cal. Predsednica Mary Jasina odpre sejo z molitvijo za pokojne članice, ker ta mesec je bil posvečen vernim dušam v vicah. Go tovo ima vsaka katerega svojih, da se jih spominja.
Prečitan je bil zapisnik zadnje seje in tudi tajnica poda svoje poročilo in račune, za kar smo bile vse prav zadovoljne.
Podpredsednica Jean Kmelich se zahvali vsem, ki so pomagale pri rummage sale in cel odbor se zahvali Mr. Kurelich in sinu, ker so vse pripeljali in pomagali kar je bilo treba.
Precej smo si pripomogle v našo blagajno, zato smo sklenile, da se pošlje $10 Ftather Varga za sklad v namen povišanje škofa Slomška in $10 za Calich, kateri naša organizacija veliko pomaga.
Prečitano je bilo pismo državne predsednice iz Ohio, Mich., Mary Bostian, da bi pričela kake nove aktivnosti bolj privlačne za mladino, kakor n. pr. baton twirl, balinca, kuhanje, plesanje in drugo. Predlogi se vzamejo na znanje.
Pravo veselje je zopet videti Caro-lin Kaliope in Rozi Krajnik. Zelo nas veseli, da sta se pozdravile. V bolnici se nahaja Ančka Kokel in sestra Mentog. Upam in želim, da ko boste čitale te vrstice, boste že zdravi.
V	decembru ne bo seje, ker bomo imele pot luck dinner, kakor vsako leto, tako tudi letos za meso bo šlo iz blagajne, drugo pa prinese vsaka nekaj. Vem, da bo vsega na razpolago. Seveda so vabljene tudi vse družine članic. Nečlani pa darujejo $1.
Ker v dec. ne bo seje, smo imele na tej seji volitve, toda kot presenečenje, je vse šlo tako hitro, da je vse ostalo po starem. Hvala vsem.
Zahvalim se vsem, ker ste vse se tako trudile in lepo složno delale v preteklem letu. Imele smo dobro o-krepčilo, katero so prispevale naše slavljenke, Caroline Kaliope, Jean Horzen, Mary Pavšek, Frances Kapel, Mary Kovačič, Jean Kurelich in moja malenkost. Vsem preljubo zdravje.
Prosim, katere ste v zaostanku z asesmentu, da poravnate, ker tajnica ne more vedno zakladati. Zavalim se vsem, ki se udeležujejo naših zabav ter želim, da bi še tako nadaljevale v prihodnjem letu.

Dne 21. junija sem šla s skupino v Slovenijo. Vožnja z letalom je bila lepa in na Brnku pri Ljubljani so nas čakali automobili in zastopstvo Izseljenske Matice nam je izreklo dobrodošlico. Moja sestrična in 3 hčere so mi prinesle krasne šopke. To je Ivana Marin in družina iz Kobilca, ki sta se za stalno naselila v Domžalah, kjer imata krasno moderno hišo in novi auto nemške firme Mersedes s katerim smo se odpeljali v Jarše.
Hvala lepa. Doma so imeli vse lepo pripravljeno za sprejem. Sicer ni-ožjega sorodstva, toda sestričen in bratrancev dosti. Sestra mi je umrla kot usmiljenka v Zagrebu leta I960, oče pa 1911 v Jaršah.
Prvo nedeljo našega obiska rodne Slovenije, smo se s sorodniki podali na božjo pot k Mariji Pomagaj na Brezje, enako tudi zadnjo nedeljo našega bivanja v domovini. Časi se res spreminjajo, kajti pri vseh mašah je bila cerkev nabito polna in mnogo auto-busov je pripeljalo romarje. Ko sva leta 1956 bila tam z možem, takrat je bilo malo busov in osebnih autov in mnogo ljudi je prišloi peš, ali pa z vlakom.
Udeležila sem se tudi petdnevnega potovanja po Sloveniji, bili smo na Štajerskem in nato šli obiskati tudi Hrvaško. Imeli smo lepo vreme in 4. julija smo se udeležili piknika v Velenju, kjer so imeli pripraljeno za tisoče ljudi, pa ni bilo dovolj prostora na suhem, ker je lilo in smo šli iskati strehe v busu. Spali smo 2 noči v tem lepem štajerskem mestu.
Videli smo toplice in krasne hmelj-ske nasade na štajerskem. Videli smo stare gradove in lepe cerkvice na hribčih. Imeli smo dobrega vodnika, učitelja g. Novaka, ki nam je vse lepo razlagal. Vse je prehitro minilo. Nato sem šla za 3 tedne v Dolenske
Toplice, bila sem privatno pri Anici Sitar, ki je dobro poznana v Jolietu in Chicagu.
Tam imajo zelo dobrega župnika g. Kavčiča. Bila sem vsaki dan pri večerni maši in vedno je lepo pridigal in nam povedal zgodbe svetnika tistega dneva.
Moj bratranec Franc Pestotnik pa je za župnika v Loškem potoku. Moral bi imeti srebrno mašo 13. au-gusta, pa je malo tam zbolel in je moral v ljubljansko bolnico. Dne 17. augusta sem bila pri maši v Komendi, kjer imajo za kaplana mladega prijaznega gospoda Laha, ki je iz velike družine. Bilo je 200 ljudi v narodnih nošah in krasna cerkev je bila nabasano polna. Dne30. julija pa sem imela srečo se udeležiti v Dol. Toplicah zlate maše, ker tako lepe slavnosti še nisem videle. Bilo je toliko ljudi, da so morali stati zunaj cerkve.
Ko sem bila v Ljubljani, je prav takrat bil tam tudi poznani ameriški zdravnik, ki je opravil operacijo na srcu tako uspešno, da so vsi o tem govorili. Operacijo smo videli na televiziji.
Toda čas je prišel, ko smo se morali poslavljat, kar je vedno žalostno, ker ne vemo, če se bomo še kedaj videli. Na predvečer so mi pripravili lepo odhodnico, prišli so sinovi Mrs. Pirnat, ki pojejo na koru v Domžalah in tudi na radiju ter so mi res krasno zapeli v slovo. Njihova mati je bila naša soseda. — Mrs in Mrs. Kobilca ter sestričina hčerka Milena, so me peljali na letališče Brnik. Bili smo žalostni, čeprav je pot bila krasna. Vrnitev je tndi bila prijetna in ko nas zrakoplov pripelje na Kennedy Airport, smo zaključili to nepozabno potovanje in obisk rodne Slovenije.

From the First Book of Christmas Joy comes the following: “Christmas Day is December twenty-fifth, but Christmas is really far longer than a day. Christinas is weeks of dreaming about it, and planning for it; it is afternoons of school singing and play rehearsals, hours of shopping and gift-making and card-writing and package-wrapping. It is also days of vacation, and secrets and surprises -— and very impatient waiting. Christmas is much longer than one day.
“Christmas is a holy and happy occasion; the celebration, in countries all around the world, of the birth of the Infant Jesus in Bethlehem, almost two thousand years ago.
“Christmas is a family holiday, a whole season. It is a season that begins about the first of December and runs along on laughter and whispers and jingle bells until — well, when does it end? Since this kind of Christmas season comes from loving and sharing, maybe it never ends; may be it sleeps in the family’s memories from one year to the next.”
A huge library would be needed to hold all the books written about Christmas. Many days would be required to play and sing all the Christmas songs in the world. Many art galleries would be needed to display all the paintings and carvings of the Nativity — the Birth of the Baby Jesus.
The custom of sending greeting cards at Christmas began in England in 1843. It was long a practice of British students to send their families and friends elaborate scrolls and good wishes. From this Sir Henry Cole had a card designed and printed, and then hand-tinted. One thousand were sold the first year and after 1844, the practice of sending cards grew rapidly and has spread to all parts of the world.
Through this practice of sending cards the message of the Nativity is carried by means of stamps. Some of the most beautiful stamps are made from paintings. Vatican City’s Christinas stamp was copied from a painting of the Annunciation made more than 600 years ago by an artist named Cavellini. Argentina’s picture of the Holy Child was taken from Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Virgin of the Rocks. The year 1959 saw Australia issue a stamp which was a picture of the Three Wise Men on their way to adore the newborn King.
St. Nicholas — the “Christmas Saint” — was issued in 1951 by the country of France. From a painting by a famous Spanish artist named Goya, Spain’s 1959 stamp was a picture of the Holy Family.

Angel Gabriel blowing bis horn — proclaiming “Christ is born in Bethlehem” was 1965’s message for our nation. The idea came from a New England copper Weathervane.
The 1966’s is a painting of the Madonna with Child found in the National Gallery of Art. It. was painted by Hans Memling, an early Flemish painter known for his delicacy and technical perfection.
For this year the stamp is the same except it is somewhat larger. It’s wonderful to know that our country is keeping Christ in Christmas once again.

Giving to others, less fortunate than ourselves, is a tradition that goes back to the first Christmas — the birth of Jesus in a stable because there was no room in the inn. Here is a story — The Winner — written by Glenn D. Kittler to illustrate this giving:
“The noise was enough to make Father Bonaventure almost regret having given this party. ‘The wild Indians 'are certainly running true to form,’ he thought.
The children were indeed Indians — members of the Papago tribe, and this was their first Christmas party, given them by the Franciscan Priests at the San Xavier Reservation Mission south of Tuscon, Arizona.
One boy, Luis Pablo, was a special problem. He kept trying to take away prizes won by other boys.
‘Luis!’ Father said severely, ‘why can't you behave?’
‘I want to win something,’ Luis complained.
‘Then win something,’ said Father. ‘Don’t steal it.’
At the end of the party the children formed a line and to each Father presented a bag of hard candy. When eight-year-old Luis’ turn came he asked, ‘Can I have three bags?’
‘You cannot,’ said Father sternly. ‘One bag to each.’
‘But 1 mean empty bags.’
‘Oh! Well, why not?’ Father gave Luis three bags and the boy left.
THE LEGEND OF THE CHRISTMAS ROSE
Bearing with them precious gifts Of gold and frankincense and myrrh,. Wise men traveled from the East i To where Joseph, Mary, and Jesus were...
Watching from afar that day A little shepherdess we’re told Looked on and wept because she had No gifts of frankincense and gold .. .
Then something wonderful took place For as her tears fell to the ground The little shepherdess looked down And saw flowers growing all around. ..
She gathered them and joyfully Before the Infant’s crib she knelt,
Her gift of flowers showing Him That adoration that she felt...
He touched the petals lovingly As if each one was so revered And every place He put His hands A bit of softest pink appeared . ..
And so a flower that never bloomed In any place or clime before Began to grow that very day To bloom at Christmas evermore!
Later, alone in his office, the priest glanced out the window and saw Luis sitting on the school steps. He had three bags open beside him and, carefully, was dividing his candy into, them. Then Father Bonaventure suddenly remembered: at home Luis had two brothers and a sister. They were too young to come to the Christmas party. So this was the reason... .
The priest went to the party room and scooped the remaining candy into a large bag. It was to go to the Sisters, but he knew that they would not object to what he was about to do. Outside he gave the bag to Luis. 'Here’s your prize,’ he said.
‘Prize?’ Luis asked, suspicious. ‘What for?’
'All during the party I was watching to see which one of you had the true spirit of Christmas,’ Father said. ‘ You win.’
Then the priest turned and entered the school quickly because he did not want the boy to see his tears.”
A Christmas prayer written by Elizabeth Searle Lamb is my choice of closing this month’s letter:
"This Christmas I would light a candle In some forlorn child’s eye,
Place a new star of friendship In someone’s lonely skies.
I	would put 'a sparkling wreath of joy Where it might melt a bitter heart;
Be steadfast in my prayer for peace For all the world, not just a part.
So in this season, love-beguiled,
