Letter of Most Rev. Douglas Crosby for Easter 2013
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Easter is always the celebration of new life. In the midst of darkness and death, the Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the promise of new life. We follow Him closely so that we will share in new life with Him.
Recently, I celebrated the funeral of a long-time friend after a lengthy illness. His wife, family, and friends, grieved his loss deeply. Their sadness and tears were palpable. Yet they were consoled by their belief that he was with the Lord - in a better place: no more pain, no more suffering, no more tears. It is, when all is said and done, a great consolation.
The family was also consoled by the knowledge that "love never ends". Their love for him, and his for them, continues beyond death. Their prayers for him are effective, as are his prayers for them.
At Easter we celebrate the fullness of life and love. We say that Jesus Christ is "the first-born from the dead." And we believe that we rise with him; we are "co-heirs" with him to the fullness of life with God.
When darkness and sin and death threaten to overwhelm, let us always remember that we share in the promise of new life. Let it be our reassurance and our joy. With confidence in the Resurrection then, let us love one another as He loves us!

BANKET SV. JOŽEFA - DRUŠTVO BLED - FANTJE S PRAPROTNA
Fantje s Praprotna so zaključili svojo turnjo po ZDA in Kanadi z nastopom med rojaki v Hamiltonu. Nedelja 17. marec je bil edini datum na razpolago za njihov nastop v okolici Hamiltona. Društvo Bled in društvo sv. Jožefa sta združila organizacijske moči in skupaj organizirali nastop Fantov s Praprotna v veliki dvorani slovenske župnije sv. Gregorija Velikega. Tako je gostovanje Fantov s Praprotna združilo kar tri slovenske organizacije in zgodil se je nepozaben koncert, ki je spominjal na legendo Lojzeta Slaka. To pot pa je Fante s Praprotna je spremljal trio domačih mladih glasbenikov - Brajda.
Kvartet je zapel 4 pesmi že v cerkvi v drugem delu bogoslužja, ki ga je vodil g. župink Drago Gačnik. Popularnost Fantov s Praprotna je bila očitna še pred nastopom v nabito polni dvorani (čez 400), ko so z obiskovalci obujali spomine na pretekla srečanja z Andrejem Bergantom, Francijem Rebernikom, Tonetom Štritofom and Janezom Dolencem.
Po kosilu je dvorana zaživela v polnem navdušenju, ko jo je napolnil unikaten melos melodij Lojzeta Slaka, saj je kvartet posvetil več pesmi prav njemu v spomin. Zdi se, da je petje Fantov s Praprotna tako zlito in naravno, kot da njihovo izvanjanje prihaja iz ene same duše. Več kot dveurni koncert je povezoval in poskrebel za dobro voljo tenorist Andrej Bergant. Tudi to, da je vsa dvorana večkrat zapela v en glas z nastopajočimi, veliko pove o razpoloženju, ki so ga ustvarili ti štirje biseri Slakovih melodij.
Občudovanje gre Fantom s Praprotna, ki so se podali na tako zahtevno turnejo po ZDA in Kanadi. Namreč razdalje med nastopi so bile ogromne. Rdeča nit turneje je bil Lojze Kocjančič, za nastop v Hamiltonu pa sta poskrbela Lojze Lesica in Jerry Ponikvar.
Fantje s Praprotna so z nastopm v Hamiltonu poskrbeli za svojevrsten zaključek. Namreč, ni se še zgodilo, da bi se obiskovalci tako pozno (po petih urah) s takim navdušenjem vračali na svoje domove.

Pop stars and celebrities pull the crowds. The Pope too: crowds line the streets. It was the same with St Paul. When he travelled to Rome, Christians walked miles to welcome him at the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns. And in most countries, presidents, royalty, heads of state, would-be leaders, pack the squares. But not always to cheer. Sometimes the streets are filled with protestors seeking justice, demanding democracy, freedom. Peaceful protests can turn ugly; violence may erupt. Celebration can end in tragedy. Something like that happened on the first Palm Sunday. Why are the vestments red? It is the colour of glory, but it is also the colour of blood.
Gospel Teaching
Palm Sunday was the great day of the Lord! Jesus arrived at last as the Messiah, to enter and claim his own city, the royal city of David, Jerusalem, and to set up his throne. "The whole multitude of the disciples" were rejoicing and praising God, as they accompanied him: "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" From Jerusalem his reign would begin. But already, sinister, discordant voices were heard: "Teacher, rebuke your disciples." Impossible, answered Jesus, "If these were silent, the very stones would cry out."
Sometimes it is said that the crowd who sang Hosanna were treacherous, turning against Jesus on Good Friday, baying for his blood. Not according to Luke. In his Gospel the exulting, singing, joyful crowd entering the city with Jesus were his disciples who accompanied him from Galilee. There was nothing treacherous about them. These faithful disciples who triumphantly processed with the Messiah into the city would be shocked by the reception he received from the inhabitants of Jerusalem: Jerusalem, the city that killed prophets and stoned those who were sent to it. It was not the loving disciples, but the inhabitants of Jerusalem, stirred up by the chief priests and the supporters of Barabbas, who would be screaming, "Crucify him! Crucify him!", while his disciples were overwhelmed by incredulity and fear.
The long Passion Gospel of St Luke today begins in the upper room, with Jesus offering bread and wine, saying, "Do this as a memorial of me", before taking his faithful ones into the garden of Gethsemane, where he begged them to "watch and pray". On Maundy Thursday this is what we do.
All four evangelists record Christ's passion, each with his own emphasis. It is Luke who tells us about the women who wept as he passed by, and his gentle call, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep rather for yourselves and for your children." It is Luke who notices the way Jesus, even in his anguish, brought Herod and Pilate together. Though they "had been enemies before, they were reconciled that same day". Jesus' forgiving, healing, reconciling work went on. And still it goes on now.
Luke's great recollection of Jesus is of his love, his kindness and his mercy. The lost sheep Jesus saves, the prodigal son welcomed home, the sinners forgiven. Luke is the one who tells us about the thief on the cross whom Jesus saved at the eleventh hour. "Remember me when you come into your kingdom," he pleaded, and Jesus would never refuse such a prayer. He records the words of Jesus on the cross, "Father, forgive them; they do not know what they are doing." Surely St Paul
must have been thinking of Jesus when he wrote that love is "always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope, and to endure whatever comes".
Luke tells us Christ's final words, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." They express the way he lived his whole life. Isaiah, so long before, had written, "For my part, I made no resistance, neither did I turn away." Even his death was a triumph.
Application
Reflecting on Christ's life, his humility and incarnation, and his death on a cross, St Paul wrote a triumphant hymn, our second reading, in his praise. The rejoicing of the disciples on that first Palm Sunday, the celebration, their exultation as Jesus went to take his throne, is all recaptured. Their faith was vindicated. This is what, in the end, did happen. God raised him high. And so we rejoice with them today and "bend the knee at the name of Jesus"; we acclaim him Lord and Messiah, to the glory of God the Father. In this Mass we worship and adore him, letting our lives as well as our lips sing his praise.

Pevske vaje za mešani zbor bodo plpv^ v sredo po večerni maši. Zbor bo pel na Veliki četrtek, Veliki petek/moški zbor in angleški zbor/, pri Velikonočni vigiliji in na Veliko noč.
VELIKI TEDEN_
Veliki ponedeljek - sveta maša bo v župniji zjutraj ob 8:00, ker ste zvečer ob sedmih vabljeni na Krizmeno mašo v katedralo. Pri tej maši bo škof posvetil sveta olja, ki jih duhovniki uporabljamo pri podeljevanju zakramentov.
Velikonočno tridnevje bomo začeli na Veliki četrtek z mašo ob 7:00 p.m. In po maši so molitve z »Jzusom na Oljski gori«. Veliki četrtek je spomin zadnje večerje - ustanovitev evharistije in tudi ustanovitve zakramenta mašniškega posvečenja
Na Veliki petek ni svete maše; v spomin Jezusove smrti na križu imamo bogoslužje ob 3:00 p.m. (V dvorani Slovenska šola pripravlja, kot že lani, FISH FRY). Bogoslužje bo v obeh jezikih. Ta dan je tudi strogi post, ki veže vernike od 18. do 60. leta starosti. Zdržek od mesnih jedi veže tudi mlade od 14. leta naprej.
Na Veliko soboto zjutraj ste vabljeni k češčenju in molitvi pri božjem grobu. Začetek bo ob 9:00 a.m. Popoldne ob 3:00, 4:00, in 5:00 p.m. Bodo blagoslovi jedil, vmes tudi prilika za spoved. Zvečer ob 8:00 p.m. je začetek VELIKONOČNE VIGILIJE. Začeli bomo z velikonočnin ognjem in nadaljevali s sveto mašo in procesijo.
Na Veliko noč imamo redno slovensko mašo ob 9:30 a.m., ki jo bomo začeli s prepevanjem vstajenjske aleluje, velikonočno procesijo po cerkvi in nadaljevali z redno mašo. Ob 11:00 bo še sveta maša v angleškem jeziku. 94 | VESTNIK 2013
FISH FRY - na VELIKI PETEK_
Obveščamo vas, da bomo na Veliki petek 29. marca 2013 ob 4:30 popoldne, t.j. po obredih Velikega petka v zgornji dvorani, učiteljice in otroci slovenske šole nudili pohane ribe s pečenim krompirjem (pommes frites). Vljudno Vas prosimo in Vas vabimo, da pridete in se pogostite. S tem boste pomagali našim učencem zbirati potrebna finančna sredstva za šolo in ekskurzijo v Slovenijo v letu 2013. Imamo novi sistem, da ne boste predolgo čakali v vrsti za okusne ribe.

The teachers and students of Slovenian School will be selling fish and chips in the upper hall after the Good Friday Service on March 29th. Doors will open at 4:30 pm and everyone is welcome. We have changed our ordering system this year so that you will not have to stand in a long line. With this you will be helping our school children raise funds for their school and our excursion to Slovenia in 2013. We thank you in advance for your generosity and cooperation. V Sloveniji v Ižakovcih je umrl Jože Balažic. Pokojni je oče Emilie Lovrenčec. Pogreb pokojnega bo v Ižakovcih v nedeljo. 24. marca ob treh popoldne. Iskreno sožalje hčerki Emiliji in sestrama pokojnega Jožega, Emiliji Kozlar in Matildi Škafar in tudi vnuku Robertu. Pokojni Jože naj uživa večni mir in pokoj.
