Naj bo to naše zagotovilo in naše veselje. V imenu vstalega Kristusa in Marije Brezmadežne vas pozdravlja E_I + iDOugOs C^roSÓy, OMI, hamiltonski škof The Presentation of the new Parish Council March 2013 The new Parish Council was approved at the annual general meeting of St. Gregory the Great Church, held on February 24th, 2013. Sunday's Readings EASTER Sunday Response: "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad." First Reading Actsl 0:34. 37-43 St Peter is a witness to the risen Christ. Second Reading Colossians 3:1 -4 St Paul explains how baptism makes us sharers in the resurrection, and gives us a new mind-set. Gospel_John 20:1-9 Mary Magdalene and the disciples begin to understand that the Lord is risen. "It was very early on the first day of the week and still dark." Illustration Good things happen to us, as we say, out of a clear blue sky. The news that we've got a set of A* results in our exams. The news that we have got the job we longed for. The news that our body scan is favourable, and we have a clean bill of health. The news that we are a grandfather or grandmother, and mother and baby are doing well. Sometimes good news comes in stages; it can slowly dawn on us, and maybe that is because we are not strong enough to bear it all at once. The news of the resurrection was broken in stages to Mary Magdalene. And it came not so much out of a clear blue sky, as out of a dark pre-dawn sky -it dawned on her. Jesus is not here. The rock, 100 | VESTNIK 2013 which had looked colossal and immovable, had been rolled away like a pebble. We see Mary hurrying away through the dark trees, slipping and sliding down the hill into the city, banging on the door of the house where the disciples were, calling impatiently for them to open. So far, she did not have real faith in the resurrection. The best she could tell them was, "They've taken the Lord out of the tomb." Peter and the other disciple ran at top speed to the burial place. They saw for themselves - yes, the stone is cast aside from the entrance to the cave; yes, here are the shroud and the face cloth; yes, the body is gone. Gospel Teaching The Gospel suggests, without actually saying as much, that at this stage Peter did not believe in the resurrection; the other disciple - probably John - did. "He saw and he believed." We have different characters. Some of us are inclined to be pessimistic, and suspect good news of being a trick. A later part of the Easter story, after all, is about Thomas, who did not credit the other disciples with telling the truth even when they swore they had seen the Lord. He took more convincing than they did. Mary Magdalene did not take much convincing. When Peter and John had gone away, she stayed weeping by the empty cave, and Our Lord appeared to her and called her by her name: "Mary!" She heard that familiar voice, that voice which had inspired and converted her, that voice which had given her everything to live for, and now it was speaking her name, and she believed. You and I have the advantage of knowing the whole Gospel story, and the account of all the appearances after Easter Sunday morning. Peter and John, this morning, have only the empty sepulchre as the sun rises. They remember, perhaps, that after the transfiguration Jesus told them that he would rise again. But since then there has been so much sadness, and so much shame, flight from Gethsemane, betrayal after the Last Supper, denials in the high priest's courtyard. It is these negative things that seem real, and nothing more real than the gruesome scene of the crucifixion.
