»Kdor ni proti nam, je za nas!«
Jezus na svoji poti proti Jeruzalemu poučuje učence in jim odkriva polni smiel njihove še nepopolne vere. Središče te kateheze je darovanje v apostolski službi. Janezov ugovor je klasičen: »Nekoga smo videli, da je ... izganjal hude duhove... (a) ni hodil z nami« (Mr 9,38). Zanj je odrešenje in možnost za to, da se dela dobro, monopol ene same skupine izbranih. Enak je tudi pomen Jozuetove reakcije, kakor to slišimo danes v prvem berilu. Ko vidi, da je Božji Duh s svojim izlitjem presegel ozke meje svete skupine sedemdesetih starešin, vpije k Mojzesu v svoji jezi: »Moj gospod Mojzes, prepovej jima!« (11,28).
Na takšno stališče do službe odrešenju, ki naj bi bila oblast in privilegij, odgovarjata tako Jezus kakor Mojzes s poudarjanjem in poveličevanjem sijaja božje svobode in velikodušnosti. Smisel Markovega odgovora je: »Kdor ni proti nam, je za nas« (9,40) pri Mateju pa beremo: »Kdor ni z menoj, je proti meni« (Mt 12,30). Tudi Mojzes ima svoj izrek, s katerim zavrača sektaštvo in izraža navdušenje nad mnoštvom karizem: »Ko bi se le vse ljudstvo spremenilo v preroke! Da bi Gospod dal nadnje svojega duha!« (11,29). Pravi apostol se iskreno veseli dobrega, ki je zasejano v vsakega človeka, v vsako kulturo in raso, je spoštljiv do duha resnice. »Resnica je ena sama, a ima veliko obrazov kakor diamant« je zapisal Ghandi. Odpravljanje ljubosumja in sprejemanje vrednot, ki jih imajo tudi »mali«, je lahko uvajanje v nadaljnji sklop Gospodovih besed.
Jezus kliče k previdnosti in pozornost do »malih«. Ti potrebujejo roko, ki jih drži, oko, ki jim sveti, nogo, ki podpira njihove negotove korake. Toda, če moja roka postane vzrok zmote, če moje oko vodi drugega v temo, če moj korak namenoma zavaja in vodi najmanjšega brata v padec, sem kot satan, skušnjavec svojemu bratu. Jezus torej vabi učence, naj skrbno nadzorujejo svojo družbeno dejavnost in osebno delovanje ter se izognejo temu, da bi iz zaverovanosti v lastno gotovost zrasla korenina zla za brate, ki šele iščejo Boga. Jezusova obsodba, izražena v semitskem in bibličnem besednjaku (mlinski kamen, morje, peklenska dolina, neugasljivi ogenj, črv, vzet iz lzaija (66,24), je ostra. Spoštovanje in skrb za druge, posebno še, če so «mali«,
morata biti v središču pastoralne dejavnosti krščanskega občestva. Kar zadeva uživanje mesa, ki je bilo darovano malikom, Pavel, potem ko je obranil svobodo svoje vesti, dodaja: »Zato pa: če jed pohujšuje mojega brata, nikoli več ne bom jedel mesa, da ne bi pohujšal svojega brata« (1 Kor 8,13).
Z današnjo nedeljo se končuje branje Jakobovega pisma, in sicer z odlomkom, ki je postal znan zaradi zanosa in poguma, ki vejeta iz njega. V petem poglavju gre za najostrejši napad na bogataše. V odlomku izstopa ton zavzetosti in gorečnosti, ki ga najdemo pri preroku Amosu. Doma je iz kmečkega okolja in je neizprosen nasprotnik krivic, ki so se ugnezdile v visoke sfere politične in gospodarske oblasti. Razkrinkavanje je jasno in neposredno ter ne pozna omahljivosti ali diplomatske uglajenosti. Nima potrebe po komentarjih, ki bi ga omilili ali ga naredili nenapadalnega: »Razkrinkavanje mora ohraniti vso svojo prevratniško moč v vsakem času kakor glas prerokov, ki še danes odmeva na naših zborovanjih« (lz 5,8-10; Jer 5,26-30).
Na sramote krivičnosti Jakob kliče in naznanja božjo sodbo, to je neizprosno in razodevanjsko sodbo. Bogu nič ne uide, pred njim ne velja nobeno sklicevanje na karkoli ali noben alibi.
Prav kakor je zapisal v živahnem slogu Amos: »Čemu vam bo dan Gospodov? Tema bo in ne luč. Kakor človek, ki beži pred levom, pa ga naskoči medved, pride domov in se z roko nasloni na steno, pa ga piči kača. Mar ni dan Gospodov tema in ne luč, mrak brez svetlobe v njem?« (Am 5,1820).
PRAZNOVANJE ZAVETNIKA NAŠE CERKVE, SV. GREGORJA VELIKEGA IN JESENSKI BANKET
V nedeljo, 23. septembra 2018, je bil velik dan za našo župnijo. Vsako leto se spominjamo našega zavetnika in po maši se zberemo v dvorani na slovesnem kosilu. Letos je to padlo prav na Slomškovo nedeljo.
Praznovanje smo začeli s sveto mašo v cerkvi. Za take priložnosti vse povabimo k eni maši ob 10h dopoldne. Maša je dvojezična sodelujeta pa prav tako oba zbora, slovenski in angleški. Prvi del maše, do aleluje, poje slovenski zbor, nadaljuje angleški in zaključi zopet slovenski zbor. Carl Vegelj je bil pri orglah, John Horvat je dirigiral, angleški zbor pa vodi Ivan Mertuk. Pri maši so poleg ministrantov - Joe Gosgnach in Alojz Sarjaš - vključeni še bralci: prvo berilo je prebrala Jožica Vegelj, drugo berilo in prošnje pa Mila Ferko; darove so prinesli: Clark Novak, Steven Horvat, Tony Horvat in Joe Pust. Olga Glavač je lepo okrasila cerkev in spekla kruh (za darovanje) v obliki sončnice. Pa tudi cerkev se je lepo napolnila, saj so prišli tudi iz sosednjih krajev.
Praznovanje smo nadaljevali v dvorani s slovesnim kosilom. Najprej so si lahko postregli s kavo, drugi pa so si pogasili žejo pri baru. Ob dvanajstih je vse navzoče pozdravila predsednica župnijskega pastoralnega sveta, Heidy Novak. Naj kar navedem njene besede:

Kot vidite imamo polno dvorane. Zelo lepo je videt toliko znanih obrazov tu v dvorani. Hvala vsem Vam, da ste prišli, zdaj ko se zaključuje poletje in se začenja jesen. Upamo, da tudi zima letos ne bo prehuda.
Welcome to everyone here today! It is wonderful that we are all able to come together and enjoy the company of friends. As you can see, our hall has had a bit of a facelift over the summer months. We've painted the entire hall, changed the railing panels, refinished the stage, installed new stage curtains and updated the bar area. Our final task will be to update the window blinds which we are in the process of doing, but just ran out of time to be able to have that completed for today... But, that will give everyone a reason to come to our next parish event so that you can see it's reveal!

I feel I have to take a minute or two to thank a few people who were integral in making the updating of our hall happen. First off, it is imperative that I mention Frank Erzar Jr. I called him sort of last minute and asked him for a favour (I doubt he'll ever pick up the phone when I call again)?. That little task turned into a huge job. Frank worked tirelessly at re-surfacing all our railing panels around the dance floor as well as along the balcony. Well, we then expanded the scope of his undertaking to include the resurfacing of the bar area, installing a new W" round moulding along the bottom rails as well as the re-sizing of the storage doors below the stage - they were all slanting and dragging and now they work fabulously. So Frank... Not sure if you're here... if not, then gospod and gospa Erzar. please tell him how grateful we are for all his help! He never murmured one complaining word - at least not that I could hear and my kids tell me I'm pretty much loosing my hearing... so..? Along with Frank, the update could not have happened without hours of decision making, scrubbing of floor edges and corners, dismantling all of the railing, arborite panels, sourcing of paint, cleaning of the stage and of course keeping our trades people on top of their game so that they did the best job possible and up to our standards. (It turns out we are quite a picky bunch about how things get done around here). For all those behind the scene tasks we thank Nancy Dundek-Taylor, Sidonia Poppa, Sonya Podrebarac, Elka Persin, Dragica and Lojze Ferencak, Majda Lukezic, Steven Horvat, Clark Novak and of course Fr. Drago who I think had just a little bit too much fun figuring out the logistics of every phase of this project! So, a big thanks goes out to all of you!

As you've all seen, our menu is a little different today. Thank you to Nancy for injecting a little bit of change - We are sure you will enjoy lunch as a lot of hard work went in to preparing today's meal! And finally -1 invite Fr. Drago to come up and lead us in Grace.«
Najprej sem dopolnil zahvalo tudi za Heidy, ki je imela ključno vlogo pri izbiri mojstra za barvanje - Marcos, mnogih usklajevanj pri delu, posebej v času počitnic, ko me ni bilo tukaj ... in sami izbiri barv.
Po molitvi so mladi hitro postregli na mize. Strežniki so bili tokrat: Amalia in Nikola Lukežič, Vanessa in Olivia Scarcelli, Marcus Miklavčič.
Pred in med kosilom so si vsi lahko na platnu ogledali slike naših prireditev - cerkve in tudi drugih slovesnkih društev - tam od letošnje Velike noči pa do enega tedna nazaj. Zanimivo se je spomniti, kaj vse se je zgodilo v šestih mesecih. Tako stvari ne gredo v pozabo in si obnovimo spomin.
Ko so strežniki začeli deliti sladico, se je začel tudi drugi del. Vodila ga je Teresa Zupančič.

igralcev iz prvih let skupine se je udeležila tudi banketa in je bilo ob konču lepo videti skupno sliko vseh. Daren je na kratko orisal 40 letno delo Jožeta, kako je treniral skupino odbojkarjev, kje vse so nastopili in seveda mnoga doživetja, ki so jih spremljala.
Heidy je potem žaključila: I would like to begin by thanking the kitchen staff -Nancy, Aranka, Dragica, Lojze, Kaša and Majda for preparing a delicious meal for us today. Thankyou!
Asyou all know, we have now combined our Fall Banquet with the presentation of Scholarships, Bursaries and a service award. Today is a day we take to recognize the hard work of our youth as they continue with post secondary studies while simultaneously participating and giving back to their Slovenian community. We also call attention to an individual who recognizes the importance of contributing one's time and talents and has gone above and beyond to help build a close nit community such as ours. There are many in this room who deserve to be recognized for their overwhelming participation, however, today the service award will be presented to one such individual. For these presentations, I call upon Teresa Zupancic from the Canadian Slovenian Scholarship Foundation.
In closing, On behalf of the Parish Council - we congratulate all recipients here today. We also recognize and thank all of you here today, without whom none of this could ever be possible! To help keep the scholarship foundation going, any support you can give I know would be very much appreciated, and can be arranged with Rosemary Rev, who will also prepare an income tax receipt for you!

Na koncu, ko je Heidy povabila vse navzoče, da so pomagali pospraviti mize, stole, prte ... in v nekaj minutah je bila dvorana pospravljena, kakor, da se ni nič dogajalo ... Je nekdo pri eni od miz po tiho vprašal: »Pa je to Heidy mislila zares?«
Vsi skupaj smo doZiveli lep dan. Še enkrat najlepsa hvala vsem, ki ste pripravljali, zbirali, delali, organizirali za ta banket in seveda vsem, ki ste prisli na ta banket. Še vidimo na Martinovanju, 10. novembra 2018.

CWL-KZZ JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY
Preparations for our Jubilee Anniversary as a Catholic Women's League are in full swing.
You are cordially invited to our 50th CWL Anniversary celebration at St. Gregory the Great on Sunday, November 25th.
We will mark this occasion with a Mass in English at 10:00 a.m. The main celebrant of the Mass will be The Most Rev. Anthony F. Tonnos, P.P., Bishop Emeritus of Hamilton.
This will be followed by a luncheon reception and celebratory program.

Collection for the Needs of the Church in Canada: thank you for your contribution and solidarity!
Following the encouragement of Pope Pius XII, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) was established in 1943 under the name Canadian Catholic Conference, it was officially recognized by the Holy See in 1948 and, following the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965), became part of the worldwide network of episcopal conferences.
As the CCCB President states in his message for the Collection, "Through their Episcopal Conference, the Bishops today continue to work together on doctrinal and ethical questions; ecumenical initiatives and interreligious dialogue; international relations; evangelization, faith education and catechesis; relations with Indigenous peoples; questions of social justice, and the development of a culture of life and family.."
In addition to their national Conference, the Bishops of Canada also meet in four Regional Assemblies (Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario and the West).
The CCCB as well as the regional assemblies include the Bishops of the Latin Church in Canada together with the Eparchial Bishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches. Thank you for your prayers and your financial contribution.

First Reading Numbers 11:25-29
Joshua's misplaced zeal manifests itself in jealousy of others who prophesy without permission. Moses says he wishes all God's people could prophesy.
Second Reading James 5:1-6
"An answer for the rich," says James in this letter. Those he seems to have in mind are those who are focused on themselves and what they have earned.
Gospel Mark 9:38-43. 45. 47-48
There is no room for jealousy in disciple-ship. Those who follow Jesus are called to recognise the giftedness of others.

Alec Issigonis invented the Mini motor car in 1959. He is also credited with being the first person to coin the memorable phrase that "a camel is a horse which has been designed by a committee". Apparently Sir Alec, as he was later titled, was well known for his dislike of working in teams or of being on committees. It is understandable that someone as imaginative as him could find himself hampered by others unable to share his vision. Perhaps he had suffered the annoying experience of having his brilliant and inventive concepts rejected, or had found his work being slowed down as others struggled to catch up with his extraordinary vision.

We are not all brilliantly inventive people, but probably all of us have at some time or other suffered from people trying to be helpful but in fact doing more harm than good. How often have you heard someone say, "You can't put that there," or, "Well, I wouldn't have done it that way," or even, "It will never last"? There is no shortage of people who desire to give us the benefit of their advice - whether or not we want it or need it. It is unfortunate, but not probably terribly surprising, to hear such unhelpful advice coming from people whom we thought would know better. We find two examples of this in today's readings: in both the first reading and the Gospel.
Gospel Teaching
Joshua is an important Old Testament figure. He is only mentioned twice in the New Testament, however. His Old Testament fame arises from two important roles. First, during the forty years in the desert, he was Moses' assistant; and second, he succeeded Moses as leader of God's people. It was Joshua who led the Israelites into the promised land, and we mustn't forget his role in the battle for Jericho.
According to today's first reading, Joshua was an important but not perfect figure. Perhaps he was only trying to protect his master's reputation. Moses and seventy elders had gone to receive the spirit of God. The elders began prophesying. There were two other people who had remained in the camp when the spirit of God came down on the seventy elders. These two were called Eldad and Medad, and they too received the spirit of God and began prophesying. Joshua urged Moses to stop them because their names were not listed among the seventy. To Joshua's surprise, Moses was not annoyed with the two who were prophesying; in fact, he wished that all the people were prophets.
Today's Gospel story covers very similar ground, except that this time an outsider is casting out devils in Jesus' name. John takes great pride in telling Jesus that they soon put a stop to it. Jesus, however, insists that they should not have stopped him, because no one who works a miracle in Jesus' name is likely to be against him.
Application
Important as the issue is of not stopping someone from doing work in Jesus' name, there is another issue that is, if anything, even more important: it is about placing an obstacle in the way of a would-be disciple whereby that disciple is prevented from drawing closer to Jesus, and Jesus sternly warns anyone who is an obstacle to one of his little ones. The word for "obstacle" in the Greek of the Gospels also gives us the English word "scandal", but it originally meant a large rock or boulder which, if it was found lying in the middle of the road, would impede the travel of a pedestrian. This would definitely stop progress and we can see that Jesus would want to discourage anything that would become an obstacle to one of his disciples.
Jesus uses the concept of obstacle in a different way. He suggests that John and the others were potentially preventing someone from reaching or even being aware of the presence of Jesus. This is another matter altogether. It seems strange that an action designed to preserve Jesus' good name and reputation could turn out to be responsible for making Jesus himself less visible, and all because John wanted to put right the man casting out devils in Jesus' name. Is there a danger that we too can be a barrier to other people, those outside our normal circles? If so, might we be in danger of trying to keep the Lord out of sight of those of whom we don't approve?

Začenjamo mesec oktober, mesec v katerem bolj pogosto in goreče molimo rožni venec. V nedeljo, 7. oktobra je spomin Rožnovenske Matere Božje. Na prvi petek bom obiskoval bolnike, zvečer ob šestih bo, kot običajno, priložnost za spoved in molitev pred Najsvetejšim.
