Nisi si prizanesel, potrošil si se, pšenično zrno, ki pade v zemljo in umrje.« (T. Many members, families, and friends came out to enjoy the festivi-ties. Skating, sliding, and a fire pit outside; arts & crafts, balinca, roast pig, and a fire-place inside. Our First Annu-al Scavenger Hunt was a huge success. Our Genealo-gy Display and Power Point was triumphal. The kickoff for the Slovenski Park Family Album Initiative was a mega hit. Thanks to all who helped make this event exciting, informative, and fun. Check out more pics on Facebook and on our Webpage. Some people came to view our ongoing efforts to present the “All in One Slovenski Park Family Tree” and to view our common connections. Some were very excited to present their own family trees. Some used the opportunity to find out more about how to begin and enjoy the Genealogy passion. And some had never seen something like this before and were hooked. If you would like assistance working on your Family Tree, or advice on finding out more about your ances-try, please feel free to contact Frank Majzelj, Frank Pin-ter or Darin Gričnik with any questions you may have. Darin will be our photographer this year at our ongoing effort to put together our Slovenski Park Family Album. When you see him - smile for the camera. Next year’s event will be even bigger. Several peo-ple have already indicated how very far back their re-search on their family trees already goes and are excit-ed to share their ancestry as part of next year’s display. A lot of organizational material was handed out and we'll be following up with you! Enjoy your journey! The First Annual Photo Scavenger Hunt was a huge success. Seven teams signed up and had fun running around the park finding clues, taking photos, creating sculptures, solving puzzles, and just plain having bar-rels of fun with family members. Be sure to sign up next year! The kitchen and bar were well equipped with good food, drink and happy faces. The roast pig dinner, klobasa or čevap dinner were tasty treats. No one went hungry or thirsty! The Arts & Crafts table kept the kids busy indoors. They decorated gingerbread men and created decora-tive snowmen. So many talented children! The fireplace kept our members warm. The were able to sit around the tables and enjoy visiting with each others. Some played “balince”, while others lis- tened to the live musical entertainment. But all had a great time! And of course, skating, sliding, and hockey on the pond. How joyful to see kids and their families enjoying the fresh air outside making win-ter memories. We had a full class of fabu-lous cooking enthusiasts on Satur-day. This was our second session with this recipe and our creations were beautiful and so very tasty. With so many cooks in the kitchen this week - our experience was filled not only with a delicious desert, but a good time with a lot of laughter and some great sto-ries! The intentions of hosting cooking sessions was not only to learn various recipes and a few kitchen tricks, but to create the opportunity for those connected to our community to bond and enjoy the company of fellow home cooks, with a passion for good food and of course a good time! I am so pleased to say that we seem to be successful in hav-ing created an experience to ac-complish the goals we had set out for our cooking classes. With food being such an important part of our culture, I hope we see you in the kitchen some time soon. If you have any requests for a spe-cific recipe to be demonstrated, please contact me and let me know at novakh@sympatico.ca. Eat Well and Laugh often, Heidy Novak Your Parish Council invites you to attend the Annual Gen-eral Meeting Sunday, March 11th, 2018 after one 10:00 a.m. Mass. Our format will be the same as last year – we will have one mass at 10:00 a.m.; after Mass we invite all parishioners to join us for light refreshments (coffee, tea etc...) before the start of our meeting. After the meeting, we will again provide everyone in attendance with a complimen-tary light lunch so that you can all still enjoy a wonderful Sun-day afternoon and evening. After the winter we have had, let’s take advantage of every nice day that we get. We en-courage all parishioners to at-tend this meeting and partici-pate in conversations pertaining to our future. We had some changes to events and have some new ideas to share, so we hope that you will all make an effort to come out, show your support and share your thoughts. EVERYONE is wel-come! Our Parish is continuously evolving and now more - so than ever before. It is crucial that we remain current. Father Drago Gačnik requires assistance in guiding and managing the spir-itual, cultural and social life of parish members, and his main support comes from the Parish Council. This volunteer committee is critical to the continued success and health of our parish. Every parish member should have the opportunity to serve on this committee at least once in their life. Although we have some great people on our Parish Council we can always use fresh ideas, and hope that there are parishioners interested in considering becoming a Parish Council member. If you are interested and willing to come on board, please contact Heidy Novak to discuss any questions you may have – email: novakh@sympatico.ca or cell: 905-317-6002. 60 LET POROKE - 60TH MARRIAGE ANNIVERSARY V soboto, 17. februarja, 2018, sta dva para iz naše župnije praznovala 60 letnico poroke in sicer sta to: Zoltan in Ana Gergyek in Martin in Kathy Simončič. Oba para sta prišla v soboto k večerni maši skupaj s svojimi otroci, sorodniki in prijatelji. Kathy & Martin Simončič Ana & Zoltan Gergyek Illustration The Voice is a reality TV series, which essential-ly is a singing competition. Created in the Nether-lands in 2010, variations of the show are now broad-cast in most countries of the world. There are vari-ous stages of the competition, but perhaps the unique selling point is the “blind audition”: in the opening round, the judges have their backs to the contestants. If the judges are impressed by the qual-ity of a contestant’s singing voice, they press a but-ton and turn around in their iconic swivelling chairs to see who it is they have voted for. Once commit-ted, the judge becomes the contestant’s coach, col-laborating with the singer to win the competition and become “The Voice” – and gain a lucrative deal with a music company to boot. This audition is em-blematic of the show: what counts is not the con-testants’ beauty or their ability to dance or look good, but simply the quality of their singing. It all depends on the voice – and, of course, on the judges’ ability to really listen. Gospel Teaching The voice figures prominently in today’s read-ings. In the first reading, the voice of God seems to be asking if not the impossible, then the inhuman. Isaac – Abraham and Sarah’s only son – was the child God promised so that Abraham could become the founding father of “a great nation”. Not only did God seem to be asking the unimaginable, but also to be going back on that sacred promise. With relief, we discover that in fact the point of the story is the very opposite to what it appears to be on the sur-face: whereas human sacrifice was commonplace in the ancient Near East, what is revealed is that God does not want human sacrifice. By careful listening, Abraham’s understanding of God develops and grows, and their relationship of trust and faith deep-ens. The voice of God takes centre stage at the transfiguration, affirming a truth that up to this point in Mark’s Gospel God had revealed only to Jesus himself at his baptism – his identity as God’s own beloved Son – a truth that literally makes Jesus glow. Finally his disciples have come to the point where they are ready to hear this truth. But their listening is only partial. As Jesus descends the mountain, he starts to help his disciples to under-stand the meaning of his sonship: that he will be faithful and obedient to his Father, even to the point of having to give up his life. Jesus trusts God’s faith-fulness and ability to raise him from the dead. Yet this episode occurs shortly after Peter has protested at Jesus’ talk of crucifixion and resurrection. He has-n’t really been listening; all he hears is suffering and death. And it is only after the resurrection that the disciples begin to really hear and appreciate what Jesus has been telling them. Application As Christians, we believe that the transfigura-tion is not merely a past event but an ongoing reali-ty. God’s voice is creative – God spoke and creation came into being. God’s voice is transformative: Jesus literally glowed as God affirmed him as the Son. God’s voice continues to be at work in our world today, and in our lives. But like Abraham and the disciples, we need to learn how to listen and per-ceive at more than just a superficial level. That takes time and practice and commitment. So much in our modern world militates against that – we want things instantly and effortlessly. But there is no such thing as an instant relationship – with God or any-one else. When we do listen in prayer – when we are able to step outside our own expectations and pre-conceptions and focus, like those judges on the TV show, simply on the voice – we find that God’s voice continues to be creative and transformative. By mak-ing time each day quietly to open ourselves to the presence of God, we make room for God to affirm our dignity as God’s beloved sons and daughters. And as that reality gradually seeps into the marrow of our bones, we increasingly learn how to live out of that sacred space – to live as sons and daughters of God not as a moral imperative or commandment, but be-cause that is who we know we really are at the core of our being. Being children of the loving Father is some-thing that shines out from our lives – because we have learnt to listen to the voice. 2ND SUNDAY OF LENT Response: I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living. First Reading Genesis 22:1-2. 9-13. 15-18 Abraham’s faith is tested. God showers blessings on him. Second Reading Romans 8:31-34 God our Father has given us all that is most precious by sending his Son. We stand ac-quitted – God is on our side. Gospel Mark 9:2-10 At the transfiguration, the identity of Jesus is revealed. But the meaning of his identity is something the disciples still struggle to grasp. “Listen to him.”
