British Correspondent Tells About Heroic Struggle of Yugoslav People Yugoslavia's can-bomb sol-! diers, the burly chetniks now causing the Germans and Italians such incessant trouble, are well armed with machine guns and bombs, Patrick Maitland, London Times Balkan correspondent, reported yesterday to the American Friends of Yugoslavia, which is sponsoring Yugoslav Liberty Day from coast to coast today, the 18th birthday of King Peter II. Italians Air aid of Their Prisoners The Italians are so frightened that some of their soldiers attempted to surrender to a party of English and Serb prisoners of which he was a member, Mr. Maitland said. The Times correspondent, 'who covered all phases of the war in East Europe from Munich to the Nazi-Soviet clash, arrived in New York by Clipper last week after his, release in an exchange of prisoners. "The Yugoslav coup d'etat was a spontaneous demonstration by the whole Yugoslav people that they would rather have war and suicide than sign up with Hitler," Mr. Maitland said. "Outside foreign encouragement had nothing to do with it, though naturally if the Battle of Britain had gone the same as the Battle of France, it would have been another story. "Fantastic Deeds of Yugoslav Heroism "The Simovitch Government had a hopeless task. In the ten days before Hitler attacked it could not possibly purge the whole army and General Staff of fifth-columnists. Even so, when the war came, the Yugoslav troops fought wonderfully on the few occasions that they had the chance to meet .-the enemy. Their recapture of Skoplje, after its fall on April 7, is proved by the failure of the German High Command to claim the city till April 11. In between the two dates there was fought the glorious Battle of the Rachanik Gorges when Yugoslavs, comparatively speaking unarmed, held the German mechanized columns at bay for several days on end, and inflicted fearful losses. This magnificent fight has never been properly chronicled. There many fantastic deeds of hero ism as when a band of Yugoslav airforce pilots, their planes destroyed, went back on their own to blow up the Gragujevac arsenal. The call issued by the Moscow conference points out that Hitlerism particularly hates the Slavic peoples, and then continues: "Nazism treachero usly schemes to seize our ancient Slav lands—turn them over to German barons and landlords and to Italian and Hungarian gentry—and to make Slavs forever serfs. Nazism doesn't hesitate at the physical etxermina tion of the Slavs. Hitler and his clique speak openly of the need to 'exterminate masses of Slavs.' This bloodthirsty scheme is being carried out with unparalleled cruelty." The call describes how Czechoslovakia was partitioned and despoiled and that the Nazis have exterminated up to now almost three million Poles. "In the Austrian towns Graz and Wolfberg, Hitler has established slave markets where Polish peasants and workers are sold at auction to German landlords and industrialists," continues the cal land then goes on: "Italian and Hungarian fascists, following the lead of the Nazis, have bestially outraged Yugoslavia. With the very first day of the fascist occupation, 32,000 peaceful residents of one city were murdered. The Yugoslav State was divided as loot among the Germans, Italians and . Hungarians. Over 80,000 Yugoslavs were slaughtered in three months." In conclusion, the call of the Moscow congress says: "Oppressed Slav brothers! The enemy is insidious and strong. But united we are a hundred times stronger than Hitlerism. The people of the Soviet Union and its Red Army are with us. With us are all the democratic countries. With us is all progressive humanity. Rise for a war against Hitlerism! Death to the fascist bands of Hitler and Mussolini—the murderers of Slav peoples Long live our victory over bloodthirsty Hitlerism!"
