Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 TEL.: 905-561-5971 FAX: 905-561-5109 E-MAIL Gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca WEB PAGE www.carantha.com HALL RENTALS CELL: 905-518-6159 E-MAIL Hallrental@ stgregoryhamilton.ca VESTNIK Ozka so vrata v kraljestvo Ljudi je vedno zanimalo število izbranih. Že Cerkev v prvem stoletju ni mogla razumeti, zakaj Kristus odlaša s svojim drugim prihodom. Bog me bo povprašal po osrednjih motivih življenja. 298 | VESTNIK 2016 300 | VESTNIK 2016 302 | VESTNIK 2016 304 | VESTNIK 2016 SLOVENIAN CANANDIAN SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION “The Foundation was es-tablished to encourage youth of Slovenian descent to pur-sue academic excellence in post secondary college and/or university studies and to encourage them to exemplify pride in their rich Slovenian cultural roots and traditions as Canadian citizens in leadership roles of the future.” (Mission Statement) The 2016 Scholarship/Bursary Application Form is now available for eligible candidates. VESTNIK 2016 | 299 VESTNIK 2016 | 301 VESTNIK 2016 | 303 SLOVENSKA ŠOLA - SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slo-venian School. As descendants of our small Slo-venian nation, let's make it possible for our chil-dren to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their par-ents or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and are geared towards the ability of the children. Our Kindergarten and Level One programs are geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 10th, 2016 from 10:00 am to 12:00pm in the classroom behind the upper hall. Regular classes will start on September 17th, 2016 at 9:00 AM to 12:30PM. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more im-portantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage. Be-cause our Slovenian School is a part of the Slove-nian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the contin-uance of our Slovenian identity. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look for-ward to seeing you! Sandy Ferletič – Head Teacher Slovenian International Language School SVETI KRST Zakrament svetega krsta je v nedeljo, 14. avgusta 2016 prejel AMBIORIX DAMASO PANIAGUA BAEZ. Naj ju spremlja božji blagoslov in priprošnja Božje Matere Marije. 21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: Go into all the world and pro-claim the good news! First Reading Isaiah 66:18-21 People from all nations and every language will be gathered to give sacrifice to the Lord. Second Reading Hebrews 12:5-7. 11-13 Suffering should not discourage us in our Christian lives, for through it we can grow in maturity, experiencing the fruits of peace and goodness. Gospel Luke 13:22-30 In response to the question of whether only a few will be saved, Jesus warns the people not to be complacent but to do their best to enter through the narrow door. “There are those now last who will be first, and those now first who will be last.” Illustration In his novel The Magic Mountain, the German author Thomas Mann describes how the visit of a young man to his cousin in a Swiss sanatorium ends up in a seven-year stay as his own health deterio-rates. Once in the sanatorium the young man’s per-ception of space and time alters, and it is only with the advent of the First World War that he is jolted into leaving. Mann’s novel speaks to each of us, for we all seek to find refuge from the reality of life, and once in the security of our refuge it takes a momen-tous event to jolt us out. In scripture we are given the story of how human beings, through the sick-ness of sin, are driven from their home. The proph-ets are sent to help the people overcome this sick-ness, but the people prefer to remain in the false refuge of their sins. It will take a momentous event, the momentous event of human history, to jolt us out of our sin: the narrow door that is the cross of Jesus Christ. Gospel Teaching At the time of Jesus there is evidence of various Jewish groups who claimed to be the true remnant of Israel, the few from among all those who called themselves Jewish who would be saved. Is this what Jesus came to establish: a small group of the chosen; the few from among the mass of humanity who are to be saved? At first sight this is what Jesus seems to be say-ing: “many will try to enter and will not succeed”. Later, however, he refers to the prophetic vision of Isaiah that people from “east and west, from north and south, will come to take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God”. Any attempt to identify a small core or remnant in contrast to the mass of hu-manity runs against what Jesus is teaching. So how are we to understand the saying about the narrow door? A door can seem narrow to us for two reasons. Firstly, if the door really is narrow relative to our size. Secondly, if, although the door is wider than our body, we are unsteady on our feet and so cannot get through it. It is in this second sense that Jesus talks of the narrow door of salvation. It is due to the sick-ness of sin that the door to salvation is narrow, for we prefer to remain in our sins rather than accept the help of the one who can heal us and bring us through that door. We find ways of living with our sins, of avoiding the reality of our lives, so that when we are invited to enter into reality, to go through the narrow door, we grow resistant. It is with the shock of the crucifixion that we are jolted out of our complacency. We can only know Jesus Christ if we look upon the crucified one, but this is not the final word; for the one who is crucified will rise to new life. Our salva-tion will bring us to the glory of the heavenly banquet. In the cross the reality of this world is revealed, but that reality is not ultimately one of hopeless violence but of a transforming love, healing us and raising us to new life. Application All of us find times in our lives when we need the help of others. It is no different with the life of faith, except that in every moment of that life we need the help of Jesus Christ. The narrow door of our salvation is the help that God sends to each one of us in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The life of a Christian is one that centres upon Jesus Christ and the help he sends to us. Through sharing in the life of the Church we receive the help we need to find healing and begin our journey to the kingdom of God. On this journey we are transformed, so that we, as instruments of grace, become the means through which Christ’s healing and transforming presence is given to oth-ers. This journey will not be easy, as we will need to face our own frailty and the sickness of this world. Yet we do not do this alone, but through the help of Jesus Christ and those he sends to aid us in our struggles.
