24. NEDELJA MED LETOM 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 37/52 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 11. 9. 2016 Fr. Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 TEL.: 905-561-5971 FAX: 905-561-5109 E-MAIL Gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca WEB PAGE www.carantha.com HALL RENTALS CELL: 905-518-6159 E-MAIL Hallrental@ stgregoryhamilton.ca VESTNIK Jezus, prijatelj izgubljenih in zavrženih Komu je Jezus povedal priliko? 24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Response: I will get up and go to my Fa-ther. First Reading Exodus 32:7-11. 13-14 For the Lord to break his promise to Abra-ham would be to deny God’s own self. Second Reading 1 Timothy 1:12-17 Paul is himself a sign of God’s mercy. He lived in God’s mercy. Gospel Luke 15:1-32 In the human heart, no matter how per-verse, there is always an echo of God’s mer-cy. “He was lost and is found.” Illustration A traditional feature of many Catholic churches is what’s known as the St Anthony’s Box. Its pres-ence is often taken for granted by those who have been brought up in the Catholic faith, but for new-comers or visitors to our churches its purpose may be somewhat confusing. Try explaining it to some-one who’s unfamiliar with it and look at his or her face, as you explain that St Anthony is the saint who specialises in finding lost things. It may help to add that the money put in the box is supposed to be for those who are poor. Finding lost things may seem like a trivial con-cern about which to ask for the prayers of a saint. Yet even the calmest of people can lose their cool if they have lost something. Sometimes we can be-come very agitated indeed, even if the thing that is lost is not all that valuable. That very human ten-dency to make a fuss about lost things, and to be overjoyed when we find them again, is the founda-tion of the three parables in the Gospel that we have heard today. Gospel Teaching Sometimes, in the Gospels, Jesus asks the peo-ple to supply the ending of the parable he has told. In the Gospel of St Matthew he tells the story of the vineyard owner who sends agents to ask for the fruit of his vineyard. The people who rent the vineyard abuse the agents and finally kill the owner’s son. So Jesus asks his audience what the owner will do. The people reply, “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end and lease the vineyard to other ten-ants who will deliver the produce to him when the season arrives.” In today’s Gospel, we have three parables that Christ completes; but what if he had stopped and asked the people to finish them? The first two para-bles would have been easy to complete. What would the shepherd do? He would go looking for his lost sheep. What would the woman do? She would con-tinue to search for her lost coin. The ending of the third parable, although this story of the prodigal son may be very familiar to us, would have been less obvious to people hearing it for the first time. When we lose property, we want it back. When we lose people, our emotions are more complex. Anger and self-righteousness can get in the way. To lose a son is much worse than to lose a sheep or a coin, but we often collude in the loss of someone in our lives. Pride stands in the way and excludes love. The father in the parable seems to humiliate himself, but what is that compared to the humility of Christ’s incarnation and the cross? The only treasure God cares about is people. Yet this is not a treasure that can be found just by looking for it. This treasure has to cooperate if it is to be found. That is why an opportunity to forgive and to be for-given is a cause for joy and celebration; but remem-ber that the mirror of mercy looks two ways. We are called to see ourselves and our own sins in that mir-ror, as well as allowing the one who is forgiven to see that he or she is forgiven. Application In the Dominican order, when an applicant seeks to be clothed as a novice, the would-be novice is asked what he or she seeks. The answer is: “God’s mercy and yours”. There is an important truth there. There cannot just be a relationship to God that excludes all other human beings, and most of all in the matter of God’s mercy. Human beings need to be forgiven by each oth-er as well. Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” Humil-ity makes mercy possible, but the humility of God has placed mercy in our hands. We can obscure that mercy and make each other despair. Or we can give each oth-er hope and enter into love. Mercy is not like a medicine, which we may take for a while and then, being healed, are able to dispense with. It is more like the air that we breathe. PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE – FALL BAN-QUET / ANNIVERSARY BOOK Summer is almost over and the par-ish fall banquet is fast approaching. Heidy SLOVENSKA ŠOLA - SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the in-terest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parents or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and are geared towards the ability of the children. Our Kinder-garten and Level One programs are geared towards chil-dren who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to sto-ries, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slo-venian only when they are ready for it. First day of registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL was on September 10th, 2016 in the classroom behind the upper hall. Regular classes will start on September 17th, 2016 at 9:00 AM to 12:30PM. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to in-still into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friend-ships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you!
