On bo »opravičil številne«, rešil jih bo s svojo bolečino in bo lahko gledati Boga samega v slavi končnega povišanja. Steve Ryan, SDB The month of October is two-thirds over. Did you get a chance to pray the rosary during this month? Remember Pope Francis challenged Catholics to pray it every day in October. In order to be sincere and habitual in praying the rosary, there are a couple of things to aid us in praying it. Things that might help us to really enjoy doing the rosary every day. 1. It's not hard. The rosary is a simple prayer. It consists of five sections called mysteries. In each mystery you pray one 'Our Father', a decade of 'Hail Mary's' and you finish up with a 'Glory Be'. Don't get excited or worried if you skip a bead here or there. 2. Mary prays with us. We are in her company when we pray the rosary. No, I'm not crazy! We are giving her honor and asking her to bring our requests to her Son, Jesus. So she actually prays along with us. Isn't that cool to know? 3. Your mind is allowed to wander. You can think of various people and various situations and concerns as you pray the decades of the rosary. Certainly, the mysteries that go with each decade are good to ponder. Keep them in mind as you go from one Hail Mary to another. These THEMES and MOMENTS in the story of our salvation enable us to focus on God's love for us in Christ. And they remind us of Mother Mary's help for us, too. However, please do not feel that you have to be so absolutely focused on the mysteries that you don't pray about your real-life situation(s). 4. Grab one of the themes from each mystery and apply it to your life. Ask yourself: What is this mystery of our salvation (that I'm reflecting on) have to say to my life right now? Keep it real! Keep it simple, too. Let's apply that last point (number 4) to the Glorious Mysteries of the rosary. These are the mysteries that we usually pray on Wednesdays and Sundays. In the first Glorious mystery, The Resurrection, think to yourself as you pray: "Troubles will pass; new life is coming." Stay hopeful. Don't get down. Let yourself feel hope. Say the ten Hail Mary's with an abiding sense of HOPE as your backdrop. In the second mystery, The Ascension, think to yourself: "Heaven is coming one day - that's my ultimate goal - so stop getting bent out of shape about things." Your backdrop is: This life is temporary - HEAVEN is eternal. In the third mystery, Pentecost, think: "Empower me Lord God - give me the gifts I need." This is intercessory - COME HOLY SPIRIT! It's also a mystery in which we ought to be filling up with a confidence that can dispel the dark night of fear. In the forth mystery, The Assumption, think to yourself: "If I do the right thing and become holy - I will GLORIFY God and receive honor like Mary." This mystery's backdrop is: God is watching. God sees everything and knows everything. In the last Glorious mystery, The Crowning of Mary as Queen, think: "Mary, HELP! You have the ability to get all my prayers answered by your Son. You are the queen of heaven and earth. Thanks for having my back." Here is my final hint on praying the rosary. Take one reflection for each decade and pray about it -with your heart, not your head! Make sure you are connecting to your real-life situation. As we go on saying the Our Fathers and Hail Mary's in a rosary, it's better to connect the mystery to your 'gut' rather than to some imaginative depiction in Galilee, Jerusalem or Nazareth. VESTNI K 2018 | 470 '-• 29th Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: Let your love be upon on us, Lord, even as we hope in you. First Reading Isaiah 53:10-11 The suffering servant takes our sins upon himself. This is God's will: that all might inherit the light and happiness of eternal life. Second Reading Hebrews 4:14-16 We trust in God's mercy because our supreme high priest is the Son of God. Jesus was without sin yet, as a human being, he understands our frailty. Gospel Mark 10:35-45 The kingdom of God transcends earthly states. Its citizens are distinguished by loving service to one another, as Jesus showed by his humble life and atoning death. "Anyone who wants to be first among you must be slave to all." Illustration Why is it that, whichever way you turn a compass, the needle always swings north? The answer is that our planet has a solid iron core surrounded by an ocean of liquid hot metal. It behaves like a giant magnet. Eight hundred thousand years ago, however, should you find yourself facing north with a compass in your hand, the needle would point "south". Scientists researching into sediments deep below the ocean floor have discovered that every so often in its long history earth's polarity has flipped over. The reversal does not happen overnight: it takes hundreds of thousands of years. 471 | VESTNIK 2018 Human beings also experience a strong "pull", usually in the direction of self-advancement. Like earth's polarity, that urge is neither constant nor irreversible, though it can take a long time for our insistent ego to flip in the opposite direction. Any parent will tell you how difficult it is to persuade a child to let a younger sibling come first for a change. Even as adults, some of us still hanker after some social distinction which marks us out from the rest. Status matters. Gospel Teaching To be admired was as important in Jesus' time. The Roman Empire was a world of patronage. Prestige depended on cultivating connections with those higher up the social scale, one favour in exchange for another. Such norms were not alien to ancient Jewish culture: status was important even to Pharisees. Today's Gospel tells of two fishermen who had abandoned their business to follow Jesus. They believed that he was going to be king of the Jews. Naturally, they anticipated favours in return for their loyalty. There seems to have been an expectation of rapid promotions when Jesus rose to power. The two brothers were not especially greedy, just products of the thinking of their time. Jesus was a product of that same culture, yet over him ambition had no hold. Quite the reverse: the "magnetic pull" within him was away from himself towards people who were vulnerable and despised. He experienced a gut-wrenching compassion for anyone who suffered. Again and again, he turned aside to help and care and listen. His vision for the kingdom of God was not the substitution of one set of powerful rulers for another but a radical alternative. In the "reversed polarity" of God's kingdom it would be those who were poor and sick who mattered most. Leaders would no longer be driven by power and prestige but by the desire to be of service. The kingdom of God was to be a world turned upside down. This was no impossible ideal: wherever Jesus went, new and glorious possibilities were opening up before people's eyes. They saw sickness being healed; little children cherished; marginalised men and women accepted back into their communities. Everywhere, ordinary struggling people like you and me were finding hope and forgiveness. The way Jesus wanted to be remembered was not as one who ruled, but as one who served. His ultimate act of service was this: to go willingly to the shameful execution reserved for slaves so that others might find life, freedom and dignity. Such was true greatness. Application Jesus asks of us, as he asked of those ambitious disciples, "Can you drink the cup that I must drink?" We may hesitate to say "yes", for we, too, are products of a culture obsessed with status. The compulsion to establish rank still drives people to clamber over one another to reach the top. For us to hold different values is to risk being left behind. Selfless people will always be the "nobodies" of a society whose core question is: "What's in it for me?" "What is it you want me to do for you?" is the question Jesus asked James and John in today's Gospel. Self-gift is the model of true greatness that Jesus sets before God's servants, and it may cost us more than a bit of spare change. The baptism is no less than a flipping of the polarity within us, whereby God can establish God's throne in the place where our egos once held court. Christian compassion extends beyond the cosy circle of our associates; it is far more than the exchange of one favour for another. The call of Christ is to give freely to those who have nothing to offer in return. Though it may cost us dearly, such sacrifice will one day be rewarded in God's own way. Then we will understand how far this world's glamour falls short of glory.
