Another financial year is behind us. Through the dedication and hard work of the committee, I am happy to report that the results of the last year were very successful. I thank the committee members for the many hours of service they volunteer which continue to keep the club a viable centre for us all to enjoy. The next financial year is looking very promising with a number of new groups expressing interest in booking our hall. The results of these enquiries remain to be seen. Annual General Meeting. Our Annual General Meeting was held on the 8th of August and I thank all members who were able to attend. I am sure you will agree with me that this was one of our shortest meetings for a long while! Our four executive appointments continue into their second year and all other committee members were happy to continue. We welcome back to the committee Mr Rudi Perkovic, a well known member of the club. We look forward to working with Rudi. It is with sadness that we farewell Mr Frank Koncina who, after many years of tireless service, is retiring from the committee. On behalf of the committee and all members of the club, we thank Frank for the work he has carried out over many years for the benefit of the club and our community. He will be sorely missed. Coming Events. We have decided to have a barbeque picnic! All members and friends are warmly invited to join us on Sunday 3rd October at Sandy Creek. Please listen to the Slovenian radio program for details or ask any of the committee members at the club. In December, a group of musicians from Slovenia will be touring Australia and will perform in our club. Details are currently being finalised. On behalf of the committee, I thank all members and friends who have contributed to the continued success of the club through their membership, attendance and commitment to our community in the past and into the future. COMMITTEE LUNCH The traditional end-of -committee lunch was held on July 29 at the Walkers Arms Hotel, Walkerville. Committee members and partners along with other people who actively contributed to our Slovenian community in some way over the past year were rewarded with a splendid smorgasbord lunch and drinks. All agreed how wonderful the food tasted and to the large range on offer to cater for everyone's needs. Can't say enough about the great food! If you are thinking of becoming actively involved in our community the reward of these annual lunches is a good enough reason in itself. Miha Koderman looking through back issues of Slovenia South Australia newsletters in Adelaide. Miha was in Australia for five months, between March to August 2010, undertaking field research by visiting Slovenian communities throughout Australia. His research is sponsored by the University of Primorska, Science and Research Centre of Koper, Slovenian Research Agency and supported by his own financial means. A part of Miha's research entails completing a short questionnaire entitled "Roots Tourism: Slovenians in Australia" which you are encouraged to fillout. The questionnaire, in English or Slovenian, can be downloaded from the glasslovenije website -www. glasslovenij e.com. au A fascinating point Miha made was an example of how highly Slovenian ancestry is considered in the job market in the USA's north-east. Slovenians are renowned for their high work ethic and it is considered a major plus to state that you are of Slovenian origin in the job application. All the best Miha in writing up your thesis back in Slovenia. Seveda boste o novi lokaciji in vseh ostalih podrobnostih obveščeni takoj, ko bo to mogoče. Moja naslednja naloga bo torej kolikor mogoče hitro nadoknaditi dvomesečno nedelovanje ambasade, kar bo vsekakor podvig posebne vrste... Slovenian Short Film Awarded in Australia Sydney, 18 August (STA) "Lovec oblakov" (The Cloud Catcher), a 2009 short sci-fi drama by Slovenia's Miha Knific, was selected best film at the NAFA Show-fest International festival in Sydney. The other seven finalists were US and Australian films. Slovenians Abroad Discuss Common Cultural and Economic Space 01.07.2010 Ljubljana - Slovenians living abroad gathered at the 10th annual meeting in the National Assembly on Thursday, discussing the ties among Slovenians at the cultural, economic and scientific levels. They stressed the importance of cooperation with Slovenian scientists living abroad, of identity and the role of the youth. According to National Assembly Speaker Pavel Gantar, the task and goal of Slovenia to preserve its identity, language and culture and to boost cooperation between Slovenians abroad and in the homeland will surely be easier to achieve with a synergy of cultural, scientific, educational and economic space. "Culture is our strength," said Minister for Slovenians Abroad Bostjan Žekš, while also stressing the role of scientists living abroad and the cooperation with the youth in all fields. He further called on Slovenians living abroad to visit Slovenia more often. The president of the parliamentary Commission for Slovenians Abroad, Miro Petek, meanwhile noted that all political colours and ideologies should stand together when it came to national interests like that of preserving the language, culture and identity. Moreover, Florj an Auser of the Slovenian Media House in Australia, said such a common Slovenian space was only possible if all the players in Slovenia worked together. The meeting was accompanied by a cultural programme, a book launch and exhibition in the National Assembly on the history of Slovenians in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Nenavaden naslov prispevka so mi dejali. Gradili smo svoje lastne domove, s prostovoljnimi deli in finančnimi prispevki gradili cerkvene objekte in društva, prirejali smo zabave in učili najprej sebe tujega in sočasno otroke slovenskega jezika. To so svetle točke. Mnogi pomembni akterji in staroste slovenstva bodo odšli. S prostovoljnim delom se je gradilo približno dvajset objektov, kjer so delovali in še delujejo Slovenci. Imeli smo zlato dobo Slovenstva z glasbo, petjem, plesom, šolami, lektoratom. Imeli smo vse. Slovenians from Abroad Met at Traditional Jamboree 03.07.2010 Metlika/ Dolenjske Toplice - Slovenians living around the world met for the 54th annual gathering dubbed "Get-Together in My Homeland" on Saturday in the southeastern town of Metlika. Minister for Slovenians Abroad Bostjan Žekš said that in the future these gatherings should exceed all political divisions. The event, attended by some 1,000 Slovenians from abroad, was organised by the Slovenian Emigrants Society, while another gathering was be hosted by organisation Slovenia in the World association of Slovenian expatriates in the southeastern town of Dolenjske Toplice on Sunday. "Being Slovenian is something that should be above any political view. Let's be Slovenians first and then define ourselves as we please," he stressed. Žekš also noted in his speech that such event were an opportunity for Slovenians living abroad to see for themselves that "it's not that bad in Slovenia as people living here claim and as papers write". "If you look close at what's going on, you'll see that Slovenia as a young country, 19 years old, even though it's made up of two million unhappy people, is developing quite nicely," the minister said. Such meetings are an opportunity for discussions, said Žekš, who added that Slovenian emigrants can also learn first hand that life in Slovenia is not as bad as they may think given the complaints from the people and what the media have to say. Head of the Slovenia in the World association Boštjan Kocmur meanwhile stressed that everyone taking part in the annual camps are nurturing the dream of their forefathers for an independent, democratic and united Slovenia. Estimates show that almost half a million Slovenians live outside Slovenia, 80,000 of whom have Slovenian citizenship, while around 150,000 Slovenians abroad and their descendants maintain regular contacts with the country of their origin. Predstavitev projekta Stare trte v Avstraliji 2010 PROJEKT REVITALIZACIJE STARE TRTE IN DVIG PREPOZNAVNOSTI SLOVENSTVA SKOZI NJENO TRDOŽIVOST IN PREDSTAVITEV SIMBIOZE MED NARAVO IN KULTURO. Predstavlja nekaj, kar neprestano kljubuje vremenskim pogojem, ki so popolnoma drugačni kakor v domovini, posredno predstavlja trmo in trdoživost slovenskega človeka. Z novimi idejami bomo povezali starejso in mlajso generacijo in poglobili vez z naravo in nacionalno pripadnostjo. Tako bodo v nadaljne aktivnosti vkljucene lokalne skupnosti in poslovni partnerji obeh drzav, fakultete, slovenska drustva in verske skupnosti. Vas pozdravlja. Vinko Rizmal - koordinator PSR v Avstraliji •k-k-k Dear friends, It gives us great pleasure to announce some exciting novelties regarding the Old Vine project in Australia. We have worked hard to make possible the bestowal nationwide to deserving recipients of a number of cuttings from the Old Vine in the Yarra Ranges. As you may remember, the Old Vine was kept in quarantine for two years on arrival to Australia. When we had received all the positive results and necessary licenses, we, with the collaboration of the Shire of Yarra Ranges, planted the cutting in the famous vineyard region of the Yarra Valley. After nearly ten years since the Old Vine's arrival in Australia, we are pleased to announce the exciting opportunity to broaden the project. This will allow this international promotional project to extend nationwide. While certain state and national legal limitations and regulations will of necessity govern this process, in the following months we have been given the opportunity to bestow some cuttings to meritorious and deserving organizations and individuals in the states of VIC, NSW, QLD, SA in WA. Who can apply for the bestowal of a cutting of the Old Vine in Australia? Organizations or individuals who have the necessary agricultural conditions for the cultivation of a cutting of the Old Vine, and who are actively involved in Slovenian-Australian cultural or economic relations; such activity must be extensive and must be not only historical but continuing. Responsibilities of the recipients of the cuttings of the Old Vine Recipients have the responsibility to adhere to the relevant conditions and limitations with which the cuttings are to be given, and to use the cutting cultivation only for promotional purposes, that is, to promote Slovenian-Australian cultural or trade cooperation. Under no circumstances are the cuttings to be used for the commercial gain of the recipient. Because of Australian customs quarantine regulations and to preserve the uniqueness and special nature of the Old Vine's cultivation in vine-growing regions, under no circumstances may recipients give further cuttings to any organisation or individual. The bestowal process for the Old Vine cuttings in Australia Candidates for the bestowal of Old Vine cuttings may apply with SAATCE -Vinko Rizmal accredited project coordinator, who is responsible for agreements and legal responsibilities related to the Old vine project in Australia. All the applications will be considered, evaluated and all aproved applicants will be registered and published on the Old vine web site. Due to quarantine regulations the plants or cuttings will be delivered to recipients directly from accredited nursery in South Australia. All plants will be prepared before shipment to satisfy regulations of the recipient's state. Availability for the year 2010 is during July and August, so please send your applications as soon as possible. The plants bestowal is limited in numbers for a specific city, region and state. Queen's Birthday Honours: No lounging around for Maria 15 Jun 2010 SPRINGFIELD resident Maria Kenda's dedication to helping those less fortunate can be measured in lounge suites. CHARITIES: Maria Kenda, of Springfield. Picture: Helen Orr "I've got a lounge suite that I've had for 30 years but in the last 30 years, I've probably bought 30 lounge suites for other people," she says. "There's no point buying a new lounge suite every five years when others haven't got a TV, or lounge suite or even a bed to sleep in." Mrs Kenda, 67, received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in this year's Queen's Birthday honours for her service to the community as a supporter of the arts and benefactor to a range of charities. "Even though I do all the work, I feel like I shouldn't take all the credit. "Because everything you do, you really can't do without the support of your family and friends and assistance from private individuals who've helped with donations and sponsorships. Each charity that I've helped, I've put my heart and soul into it." Mrs Kenda, who has owned Kendacraft Jewellery in Victoria Square for more than 30 years (with her husband Ivan), contributes to at least 15 charities including Novita Children's Services and The Mary Potter Foundation. "I've always been taught from a young age that if you have enough for yourself, you should help others. "The Women's and Children's Hospital and the Rosemary Foundation, which is the capital fund for Alzheimer's Australia SA, and the Hutt Street Centre I think they're the ones that probably stand out more." Mrs Kenda says she hopes that by contributing to charities, she can fund research to find cures. He was 84. The cause was complications of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Mr. Schurmann, who was fluent in as many as 12 languages and read a variety of foreign papers daily, taught history and sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, for nearly four decades. Mr. Schurmann was a prolific, often iconoclastic writer on a wide variety of geopolitical themes, though many of his books were coolly received, and even some admirers acknowledged that conceptualizing and speaking, not writing, were his strengths. His best-known book, "Ideology and Organization in Communist China," published in 1968, was based on interviews with Chinese refugees in Hong Kong and offered one of the first significant accounts of life inside Mao's China. Feeling that American academicians and politicians were too focused on Europe and insufficiently aware of the influence of Asian, Islamic and Latin cultures on the United States, Mr. Schurmann began the Pacific News Service with Mr. Schell in 1970. It has changed and grown since its beginnings as a source of journalism about Asia, and it is now known as New America Media, serving as an umbrella for some 2,000 ethnic news organizations, according to its Web site, newamericamedia.org. Herbert Franz Schurmann was born in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens on June 21, 1926. His father, a tool-and-die maker, was an immigrant from Slovenia who spoke five languages; his mother was an immigrant from Saxony, in what is now southeastern Germany. In addition to his wife, the executive director of New America Media, whom he married in 1968, Mr. Schurmann is survived by a sister, Dorothy Schurmann, of Oakland, Calif.; two sons, Mark, of Olympia, Wash., and Peter, of San Francisco; and a grandson. KINDNESS - The core of the city Arriving in the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana at midnight was more than a little anxiety-provoking. Neither my partner nor I spoke a word of Slovenian. With guidebook in hand, we marched around to all the hotels and hostels listed - only to be told there were no vacancies. Armed with our city map, and lugging 40kg of backpacks and a guitar, we headed for our last hope, the Old City. By the time we arrived, we were dripping with sweat and physically exhausted -and looking desperate. We were one step away from sleeping in the nearest park when a young man approached us from one of the many bars along the canal. Speaking in fluent English, he asked if we needed help finding accommodation. While I was initially reluctant, we really needed his help. Without delay, he and his wife left their friends to help us. Within minutes we were in the reception of a hostel in an amazing location, while he asked the receptionist in Slovenian about the rooms, prices and facilities. After making sure we were happy, he bid us a pleasant stay and suggested places to visit. This couple had ended their night out with friends to help two exhausted strangers. That one small act of kindness put us in a great mood for the rest of our stay in Slovenia, and we loved every minute of our time there. I realized how a little effort on the part of a local can make such a big difference to weary travelers. My hometown entertains a lot of international visitors, and I now go out of my way to help them if they look lost, instead of staying clear, as I used to in the past. Alexi Sachlikidis Koah, Queensland, Australia KNJIGE - BOOKS Peroci's Legendary Children's Book Translated into French. Ljubljana - French publisher Circonflexe has published a French translation of the legendary Slovenian children's book "My Flying Umbrella" by popular author Ela Peroci (1922-2001). The story was published in the collection "Aux couleurs de l'Europe" (In the Colours of Europe) which the French publisher published in cooperation with the International Youth Library (Internationale Jugendbibliothek) from Munich. Young French readers will be able to read it under the title "Le parapluie volant". The book, which was illustrated by Marlenka Stupica (1927), tells a story about a girl whose umbrella turns into a balloon and flies her around the town. After it was first published in Slovenian in 1962, "Moj dežnik je lahko balon" has been translated into many languages and has sold more than 93,000 copies. In autumn (Europe), the picture book will be published in the anthology of the acclaimed illustrator Stupica, entitled "The Tree of Fairy Tales". Circonflexe has already published several picture books by the famous Slovenian illustrator Lila Prap, according to the Mladinska knjiga publishing house. Če neka tekma nima zgodbe, me ne pritegne. See video clips of your favourite Slovenian artists on SloVid -www.slovid.com Slovenski video arhiv BUSINESS SLOVENIA The insolvent Istrabenz holding has sold its food subsidiary Droga Kolinska to Croatian company Atlantic Grupa in a deal reportedly valued at around EUR 240m as part of efforts to cut its debts. The contract on the sale of 95% in the Slovenian food company, whose product line ranges from soft drinks to snacks and spreads, was signed by representatives of Istrabenz and Atlantic Grupa in late June. According to the latest estimates, Droga Kolinska's debt stands at around EUR 146m, which means that the Croatian company will pay around EUR 240m in cash for the food company. The sale of the Ljubljana-based Droga Kolinska is part of the debt restructuring programme adopted by Istrabenz, which is fighting to clear some EUR 500m in debts after announcing insolvency at the end of April 2009. *** The board of directors of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) have approved a loan of up to EUR 200m for the construction of a new generator at the Šoštanj coal-fired power plant. According to a press release by the EBRD the Šoštanj plant is an indispensable source of electricity, thermal energy for industrial use and district heating, supplying a large part of the Šaleško Valley in NE Slovenia. The bank pointed out that the plant, whose modernisation project is being estimated at EUR 1.1bn, accounts for one third of Slovenia's electricity production, playing a vital role in Slovenia's security of supply. *** Furniture and electronics retailer Harvey Norman has announced an 8 per cent increase in its full-year profit. The scheduled opening of five new Harvey Norman complexes in Australia and one in Novo mesto Slovenia during the 2011 financial year is expected to generate free net cash flow from those operations. Health Watch Dark chocolate is good for the heart. A University of Adelaide team found cocoa reduced the risk of a heart attack or stroke by about 20 percent over five years. Dark chocolate eases blood pressure just as much as half an hour of exercise a day. Professor Nigel Stocks said people on medications for high blood pressure, or those trying to avoid taking medications, could eat daily doses of about 50g of dark chocolate with at least 70 per cent cocoa. "They may want to combine exercise, weight loss and a bit of chocolate on the side." The study is published in the BMC Medicine journal. *** San Francisco passes mobile radiation law. The law requires makers of mobile phones to display in their stores details of the levels of radiation emitted by different handsets or face a 300 dollar fine. In particular, shoppers must be shown estimates of how much of the radio wave radiation from each mobile phone model is absorbed into the body of the person using it. Research into whether mobile phone radiation causes cancer or other health trouble has been inconclusive. SPORT - ŠPORT Slovenia Defeat Australia in Stankovic Cup LIUZHOU, South China, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia beat Australia 71 -60 to claim the title of Stankovic Basketball Continental Cup on August 1. It was Slovenia's second Stankovic Cup championship. They beat home team China in the 2006 event to lift their first Stankovic Cup trophy. Slovenia beat Australia. Slovenia's Sani Becirovic scored 20 points. Goran Dragic, who was later crowned as the "Most Valuable Player" of the tournament, got 13 points and a team-high 3 assists. It was a physical game, with both sides focusing on defence. Neither team was able to establish a decisive lead in the first half, and Slovenia outscored the Aussies 29-27 to finish the second period. Slovenia made two three-pointers in their 15-6 spurt, but Australia trim the gap to 42-49 by the end of the third period. Australia gave the European power enough pressure by turning the score to 55-58, but they missed a couple of shots in the last minute to finish the game 6071. Slovenia's winning team. The Stankovic Continental Champions' Cup is an international basketball tournament for men's national teams held annually by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). The idea for the tournament came from Dr. Carl Men Ky Ching, president of FIBA and the purpose of the cup was to honor Borislav Stankovic, FIBA Secretary General Emeritus, for his significant contribution to the world of basketball. Being the only Chinese president of the 28 International Sport Federations, Dr. Ching selected China as the host country for the Cup. The Cup is organized to promote basketball in that country and to provide an opportunity for the Chinese Men's National Team to compete with other national teams from all around the world at the highest level. *** Slovenia Make Top 20 in FIFA Rankings. Sitting in the stands less than 24 hours after he was appointed to succeed Pim Verbeek, Osieck would have been far from impressed with what he saw from an Australian side that lacked purpose. Only Slovenia's wastefulness in front of goal prevented a larger margin, with Zlatko Dedič finally breaking the deadlock in the 78th minute with a powerfully taken header. Zlatan Ljubijankič then sealed the result in the first minute of injury time with a wonderfully taken goal, his strike from outside the area too good for Adam Federici after Australian skipper Lucas Neill cheaply gave up possession. It was a deserved finish for the home side, who dominated proceedings with 27 shots on goal to just nine from Australia in front of a sold-out crowd at the new 16,000 capacity Stozice stadium in Ljubljana. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Urednik Dear Slovenian community, As Chair of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission and Chair South Australian Community Engagement Board, we are writing to invite you to participate in the community engagement process, launched by Premier Mike Rann, on 28 July 2010, to renew South Australia's Strategic Plan (the Plan). The Plan is for all South Australians, and acknowledges that more can be achieved if the community and government work together. It is therefore not a plan for Government alone but a plan with shared ownership - by business, the community and government together. The Plan was launched in March 2004. In 2006, when progress against the Plan was publicly reported, it was recognized that a regular state-wide community consultation was needed to give South Australians an ongoing opportunity to review and revise it. As part of the 2010 consultation process for the Plan the Community Engagement Board is now embarking on a significant state wide community engagement program, using both face-to-face and online engagement strategies with South Australians, regarding their visions for South Australia 2020 and beyond. Information about the Plan and details of the community engagement process, including how to be involved online, can be found on our website www. saplan. org. au We are pleased to invite your community to become actively involved in the 2010 community consultation for South Australia's Strategic Plan. Your community has become an integral part of South Australia's society and we would welcome any comments community members would like to make regarding their visions for the state. Please find attached a copy of the community consultation schedule for both metropolitan and regional South Australia. We would really like to welcome people from your community at these meetings. We encourage people to RSVP for these meetings, if they wish to attend, by phoning Heidi Glover (08) 8226 2055 or email saplan.rsvp@dpc.sa.gov.au If you have any questions regarding this process, or if you would like to know more about the Plan please telephone 1800 998 421.
