Preroki spreminjajo zgodovino
Ob branju božje besede kristjani najprej pomislimo na tisti dogodek v zgodovini božjega ljudstva Izraela, ki je v preroku ali drugem piscu svetega pisma vzbudilo božjo besedo upanja ali graje. A Bog ni govoril le za tisti konkretni trenutek, marveč hoče po njem spregovoriti ljudem vseh časov. Zato pomislimo, kaj hoče ta božja beseda reči nam: za sedanjost, prihod -nost in večnost. Če tako bežno pogledamo na odlomke, ki smo jih poslušali, smemo reči, da nam imajo veliko povedati.
Preroka Amosa, ki smo ga poslušali v 1. berilu, so zelo boleli odnosi med njegovim ljudstvom: nekateri zelo bogati so živeli v blagostanju, gledali so le na svoje ugodje in zabavo, ni jim bilo mar, da so mnogi živeli v stiski. Ni jim bilo mar, da je ljudstvo moralno in duhovno propadalo. A Bog bo tudi njih ob svojem času klical na odgovornost in bodo nosili posledice za tako ravnanje in šli bodo na čelu begucev, ki bodo morali zapustiti svojo ljubljeno domovino.
Tudi evangeljski odlomek kaže na nasprotje med neodgovorno sedanjostjo in večnostjo. Jezus očitno pohvali ubogega Lazarja, ki je kljub svoji rev-
ščini in stiski ohranil človeško dostojanstvo in bil pri Bogu sprejet in nagrajen, bogatin pa je prepozno spoznal napačno pot. Življenje nam ne omogoča popravnih izpitov. Zato raje prisluhnemo dobremu nasvetu in še zlasti božji besedi sedaj, ko lahko še kaj spremenimo in obrnemo v dobro.
V drugem berilu Apostol Pavel ni govoril le svojemu prijatelju Timoteju, kako naj živi kot kristjan, ampak govori tudi nam: »Prizadevaj si za pravičnost, pravo pobožnost, za vero, ljubezen, stanovitnost in krotkost.

Bojuj dober boj vere, sezi po večnem življenju, v katerega si bil poklican.«
Prebrana božja beseda nam je dala dovolj možnosti za osebni razmislek. V vsakem času vidimo napačna ravnanja in stranpoti. A od časa do časa Bog obudi vsemu svetu ali posameznemu narodu močno osebnost, ki s svojim življenjem in delom preusmeri zgodovino človeštva, Cerkve ali tistega naroda v novo - bolj pravo smer. To so sveti ljudje, svetniki, močne osebnosti. Ti so drugačni kot oni, o katerih toži prerok Amos v 1. berilu. Ne gledajo za svoje ugodje, pozabljajo na svoje koristi, so pripravljeni na žrtve, da so lahko drugim kot steber ali v pomoč.	(prim. Oznanjevalec 2004)
MIDLAND - SLOVENSKO ROMANJE
Drugo soboto v septembru (14.9.2019) je potekalo tradicionalno romanje Slovencev iz Ontaria k cerkvi kanadskih mučencev v Midlandu. Ob 10:30 dopoldne smo se zbrali pri slovenskem križu, ki je v parku pod cerkvijo, v spomin na žrtve med drugo svetovno vojno. Tam je bila komemoracija, ki jo pripravlja društvo Tabor iz Toronta. Poleg govora in recitacij je združeni moški zbor zapel tudi tri pesmi. Kljub rahli rosi se je zbralo kar precej Slovencev. Nadaljevali smo s križevim potom, ki je ob postajah križevega pota v parku, nato pa ob 12:00h zaključili s sveto mašo v cerkvi Kanadskih mučencev.
Sveto mašo je vodil škof dr. ANTON STRES ob somaševanju duhovnikov (Valentin BATIČ, C.M., Leopold VALANT, C.M., Ivan PLAZAR, C.M., Drago GAČNIK, SDB). Ker je bil ta dan tudi praznik povišanja sv. Križa, nam je škof pri homiliji osvetlil pomen praznika za naše življenje. Ob koncu maše smo še skupaj zapeli litanije Matere Božje in prejeli blagoslov.

2019 Slovenian Canadian Scholarship Foundation Awards
The Slovenian Canadian Scholarship Foundation was created to provide students of Slovenian-Canadian descent, who are pursuing post-secondary education, and reside with the Halton, Hamilton-Wentworth, or Niagara region, the opportunity to be recognized for their academic achievements, community involvement, and appreciation of their Slovenian heritage. Selected applicants were granted a monetary award in the form of a scholarship or bursary from the foundation at St. Gregory the Great Parish's Fall Banquet. Thank you to St. Gregory's for including the foundation at this event. Thank you to all who donated to the foundation as all funds raised go directly to future scholarship and bursary awards. Also, congratulations to all recipients this year. We wish you much success and happiness throughout your post-secondary studies. The 2019 recipients are:
Kate Emond - $750 bursary award
Kate is a graduate from Denis Morris Catholic Secondary School- in St. Catharines. She is currently in her second year of studies at the University of Guelph, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Science with a focus in Neuroscience.
Amalia Lukezic - $750 bursary award
Amalia is a graduate of Cardinal Newman Catholic Secondary School in Stoney Creek. She has just commenced her first year of studies at the University of Guelph, where she in pursuing a four year Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography.
Marissa Steinbergs - $750 bursary award
Marissa graduated from McMaster University with an Honours degree in Life Science. She is from St. Catharines and is currently pursing a second degree in Nursing at the University of Toronto.
Teala Chambers - $1500 scholarship award
Teala is a graduate of Blessed Trinity Catholic Secondary School in Grimsby. She is currently in her third year of studies at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she is pursuing a four year Bachelor of Science degree, concentrated honours in Ocean Studies.
Angela Ponikvar - $1500 scholarship award Angela is a graduate of Assumption Catholic Secondary School in Burlington. She is currently in her first year of studies at McMaster University, where she is pursuing a Commerce degree.

jesenski banket 2019_
V nedeljo, 22. septembra 2019, smo praznovali našega zavetnika cerkve, sv. Gregorja Velikega in po maši ob desetih, smo se zbrali na praznovanju še v dvorani.
Kljub bolj poznemu vabilu, se nas je veliko zbralo že pri maši. Pela sta, kot je navada ob takih priložnostih, oba zbora, Carl je bil na orglah, Ivan pa pri kitari. Ob sodelovanju mnogih je liturgija še toliko bolj bogata. Olga Glavač je poskrbela, da je bila cerkev res praznično okrašena, poleg tega nam je spekla tudi kruh za prinašanje darov. Darove sta prinesla Sidonia in Bob Poppa. Po maši so se tisti, ki so se prijavili, napotili v dvorano na kosilo. Zbralo se nas je več kot dvesto. Terezija in Pamela sta imela kar veliko dela, da sta vsakemu našle primerne sedeže pri mizah. Že v soboto dopoldne se je priglasilo veliko prostovoljcev, ki so pomagali pri pripravi dvorane in pomagali tudi Nancy v kuhinji. Tako je v nedeljo vse lepše teklo. Strežniki so hitro znesli hrano na mize, tako, da nobeden ni ostal lačen. Ko se iz mize vrnejo prazne sklede v kuhinjo je to najboljša pohvala za kuharice. Prav tako ni manjkalo pijače v baru. Tony Horvat je pravočasno naročil dovolj pijače in napolnil hladilnike.
Da nas je bilo v nedeljo kar precej več je pripomoglo tudi to, da smo od lani z našim banketom združili tudi »Scholarship awards«. Več o tem kdo in kaj je dobil, si preberite na prejšnji strani. Čakalo pa nas je še eno presenečenje. Heidy in Sonya sta predstavile tudi osebo, ki so ji letos podelili posebno priznanje za delo in udejstvovanje v Slovenski skupnosti. Počasi sta razkrivale kdo je ta oseba in v določenem trenutku so vsi vedeli, da je to Terezija Sarjaš.
Hvala vsem, ki ste se udeležili banketa, vsem, ki ste ga pomagali pripraviti. Bog vam povrni.

V nedeljo, 22. septembra 2019, je zakrament sv. krsta prejel deček Luca Paul Paradi-si. Iskrene čestitke staršema ob krstu otroka. Starša otroka sta: oče Peter Paul Paradisi in mati Kristina Maria Špiler. Naj novokrščenca in njegovo družino spremlja božji blagoslov in priprošnja nebeške Matere Marije.

Too often, it's bad news that makes the news. It's refreshing, then, to hear the old story of a young boy's little act of kindness. As he walked along the beach, he saw shoals of jellyfish washed up on the shore. He stooped and began to throw them, one by one, back into the sea where they belonged. A passer-by stopped a few moments to watch the youngster at work on his good turn of the day, and then murmured, "I think you're wasting your time, sonny. Look, there are hundreds of jellyfish here. What you're doing isn't going to make any difference to them." Throwing yet another jellyfish into the water, the youngster replied, "Maybe not, but it'll make a heck of a difference to that one."
Gospel Teaching
The moral of the story reflects the message of the scripture readings we have just heard. The first comes from the prophet Amos. He speaks of the

horrific situation in northern Israel some eight hundred years before the coming of Christ. Excavations in the area where Amos preached confirm the picture he's left us: wealthy people living in incredible luxury, cheek by jowl with people deprived of virtually everything.
Then in the Gospel we hear again of a stark contrast between rich and poor. On the one hand, the rich man with his fine clothes, feasting lavishly at table. And, on the other, the wretched beggar, "covered with sores"; and the dogs (not pet dogs these but scavengers) licking at his sores; the poor man longs to feed himself with the scraps that fall from the rich man's table but they are beyond his reach. It's not that the rich man does Lazarus any positive harm; he simply doesn't notice him, despite the fact that he lies at his gateway day after day. Eventually, both men die, but what a difference in their eternal fates: for the rich man it's the torments of Hades, and for Lazarus, the poor man, it's the bosom of Abraham (heaven itself). The gulf between them is unbridgeable: Lazarus can't bring even a drop of cold water to relieve the thirst of the rich man.
Application
The preaching of Amos isn't simply a piece of ancient history, and the parable of Jesus isn't simply a fascinating story. They're both mirrors, reflecting
the situation in today's world, with its fearful inequalities between rich and poor. Estimates reveal that one-fifth of the world's population possesses four-fifths of the world's wealth, while the other four-fifths are not only poor but growing poorer year by year; and two out of five of their babies die at birth or shortly after. Today's psalm gives a picture of God's concern for those who are poor and needy: "the Lord... is just to those who are oppressed... gives bread to the hungry. raises up those who are bowed down. protects the stranger. He upholds the widow and orphan." But God normally does these things through us: we are God's hands and feet in this world.
The famous actress Audrey Hepburn knew poverty at first hand for herself during her childhood in war-torn Belgium. It inspired her during the last years of her life to make many trips around the world as an ambassador for UNICEF, the children's relief agency. She visited poverty-stricken areas in Africa and Asia, bringing the world's attention to the suffering in these places and displaying her compassion for the children and adults she met. After her death, her son recalled, "Mummy believed in one thing above all. That love can heal, fix and mend, and put everything right in the end." Today we are urged to help those who are poor - for example, by holding them in our prayers, by giving generously to charities, by supporting moves to improve their lot, by caring for the planet (it is those who are poor who suffer most from damage done to our common home). Like the youngster with the jellyfish, we know that what we do is very small; but nonetheless, our practical love for others can help to "heal, fix and mend, and put everything right in the end".
The rich man in the parable was told by Abraham that "even if someone should rise from the dead", people would still not listen. We know that someone has risen from the dead. He has spoken to us in this Mass. May we never fail to listen to him.

POKOJNI_
V soboto, 21. septembra 2019, je zaspala v Bogu, naša faranka Marija Matkovič, v svojem 94. letu. Pokojna je ležala v Smith's Funeral Home v Burlingtonu, v petek, 27. septembra. Pogrebno pokojne je bil na Holy Sepulchre pokopališču v Burlingtonu.
Gospod, daj ji večni mir in pokoj; in večna luč naj ji sveti.
DAROVI_

KŽZ je od Bazarja darovala $10,000 za prenovljena vhodna cerkvena vrata.

PRVI PETEK_
Ta teden je prvi petek v mesecu oktobru. Obiskoval bom bolnike. Zvečer bo kot običajno: ob šestih izpostavljeno Najsvetejše, priložnost za sveto spoved, molitev rožnega venca in ob sedmih zvečer sveta maša. Začenjamo mesec oktober, mesec rožnega venca.
VEČNA LUČ_
V mesecu oktobru bo večna luč gorela po namenu Sonje Langenfus v spomin na pokojnega Tomaža in Jožeta Langenfus in pokojno Marijo in Alojza Joželj.

Each year, at the Multicultural Mass celebrated at the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, we recognize the many cultures present in our Diocese.
