4) SV. First Reading Genesis 14:18-20 Melchizedek, as priest of God Most High, brings bread and wine and pro-nounces God’s blessing. Second Reading 1 Corin. 11:23-26 St Paul tells the Corinthians how Jesus gave his disciples bread and wine as a memorial of himself. Gospel Luke 9:11-17 Jesus blesses and breaks bread, and hands it to his disciples to distribute among the crowds. “Do this as a memorial of me.” Illustration Meals are important. Perhaps many of us have lost sight of that in today’s fast-food society. It seems so time-consuming today for people to sit down to a meal together, with all the distractions of modern living getting in the way. It often seems much easier to put a ready-meal in the micro-wave, or to order a delivery online, and then to eat it on your lap in front of the TV or the computer screen. But if you can make the time, sitting down at a table to eat with others is a great thing to do. It’s a particular-ly good thing for families to try to do on a regular basis. One of the many problems of the Covid-19 pandemic was that eating in company with others became much more difficult, even impossible at times. In ancient times, meals were regarded as very important occasions. In Old Testament times, salvation, heaven, was often pictured in terms of a meal, a wonderful banquet with abun-dant food and drink for everyone. And our first reading today tells us of Melchizedek, a priest and king who brought bread and wine to wel-come Abraham and to honour him as one blessed by God. Gospel Teaching For Jesus, meals were very significant. There are many occasions in the Gospels where we see Jesus involved in sharing food and drink with his friends or with people in general. And he uses those occasions (right up to and including the Last Supper) for much of his teaching. Today’s Gospel recounts an occasion when Jesus fed a huge crowd of over five thousand people with a few loaves and fishes, and all had enough and more to eat; there were no fewer than twelve baskets of leftovers. This incident in Jesus’ life was seen as so important that the Gospel writers tell of it no fewer than six times in the four Gos-pels. It wasn’t simply the miracle that filled them with astonishment, but what it pointed to: before the feeding, Jesus had been healing sick people and teach-ing about the kingdom of God. The healing, teaching and feeding together were an illustration of what the kingdom means, as God meets the needs of the whole person, body and soul. But even that is not the whole story. In giving their accounts, the Gospel writers seem to have something more in mind. They are focusing too on what happened later in the story, on the night before Jesus died. It was then, as today’s second reading reminds us, that Jesus instituted the Eucharist; he gave us the Mass; he gave us Holy Communion. The central act of Christian worship for all time would be in the form of a sacred meal, a banquet where his followers would be nourished on his own body and blood; and that meal would itself be a foreshadow-ing of the banquet of heaven. In today’s Gospel, Luke seems to go out of his way to show this close connection between the feeding of the crowds and the Eucharist by the way he tells the story: he describes how Jesus took the loaves, blessed them, broke them and gave them. These four actions – taking, blessing, breaking and giv-ing – are precisely the actions of Jesus at the Last Sup-per, and of course they are the actions that we witness and participate in at every Mass. In fact, you could say that they provide a brief description of the Mass. Application So today we are celebrating and sharing in a meal more wonderful even than the one described in today’s Gospel. But as we do so, we are also experiencing a chal-lenge. To receive the body that was given for us and the blood that was shed for us is to be called to follow the example of Jesus’ total self-giving. To be fed by sacred food is to be strengthened to live holy lives, devoted to God and our brothers and sisters. To be nourished by one who laid down his life for us is to prepare ourselves to make sacrifices. To be invited as a guest to the table of the Eucharist is to be invited to share with others. And so, as has often been said, the Mass matters. It’s at the centre of our Christian life and witness. And it calls us to live lives in tune with the sacred meal that’s set before us. SLOVENIAN WINES IN CANADA On June 10, 2022, the Canadian Slovenian Chamber of Commerce was pleased to an-nounce the opening of LCBO's Central Europe-an Destination Store! This initiative has been many years in the making, and the final re-sult is this well-located store showcasing wines from Slove-nia, Croatia, Hungary, and Aus-tria. Located at 3020 Elmcreek Road in Mississauga (Mavis and Dundas), the store is a close drive for much of the Slovenian community. All listed wines are also available online for deliv-ery to your home or your local store (Canada on-ly). Having our Slovenian wines offered in this prominent store section simplifies purchasing these sought-after wines and is sure to attract new con-sumers to try varietals that they may never have seen before. To ensure that our Slovenian wines continue to be available in Canada and to expand the Slovenian wine offerings, Slo-venian wines must prove themselves to be worthy by being sought after, so we must ensure that we get support from our Slovenian communi- ty by purchasing the wines that are listed in the LCBO. Evening Prayer II is omitted on the 23rd; it is replaced by Evening Prayer I of The Most Sacred Heart. THE WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR PRIESTS is marked on June 24th. The day was established by Saint John Paul II in 2002 with the objective of hav-ing Catholic faithful pray for the sanctification of Priests. The day coincides with the Feast of the Sa-cred Heart of Jesus. “Jesus, Saviour of the world, sanctify your priests and sacred ministers!”
