For some of us “DP” kids, it was the first introduction to the English language when we began attending St. Vitus School. Slovenian language was spoken at home, but the school provided us with the language and social skills that helped us with our relationships outside our homes. I can still remember reading “Dick and Jane” in the sixth grade under tutelage of Miss Mollie, who made sure that whether you were in the first grade of the eight grade, you learned to read - in English. I can still remember the first day at St Vitus School, shortly after getting off the boat, dressed in what my family believed was proper student attire, only to be laughed at by fellow students, some of whom got off the boat few months before us, and who did not wish to acknowledge that they too were “DP’s”. We remember the daily Mass, with ouns walking up and down the main isle of the St.Vitus church like a U.S. Army drill instructor staring down the young “terrorists” in training, making sure that those “pupils” needing special attention sat next to one of the nuns. We remember the Friday afternoon singing lessons as well as reading from a youth magazine; the emphasis on spelling, the good chocolate milk in small glass containers, the walks to the St.Clair Rec Center for swimming lessons, the after school trip to the Norwood Sweet Shop. We remember the weekly gym class which included sex education, something that our parents somehow forgot to teach. Boys would remember the mandatory visit with the various pastors over the years, who tried to convince us that priesthood was our calling in life. Girls too would get a pep talk - on becoming nans. We survived, we walked to school, there were no latchkey kids, bussing was not in our vocabulary. Cell phones were not invented yet, TV’s were not in the classrooms but early models could be found at Susnik’s Furniture Store across from the school playground, “bilingual education” was not on the curriculum, being politically correct was not on our teacher’s agenda and nuns were both mothers and fatbers to us so we did not dare to cross them. They could do no wrong and our parents always sided with them. There were no minority pupils in any of our classes. All of us were minorities. Even Saturdays were school days for us, with mandatory Slovenian school classes. Weekend evenings were taken up with youth singing groups and church functions. Those were fun times. How did we survive? No. 21 May 22, 2003 . Remembering Bob by RUDY FLIS My wife, Therese, made pineapple squares last week. Bob, husband of her sister Lorene died on May 13lh, and another era begins in our family. Those of us who married in the 1950s and ‘60s, are now at an age when our life’s journey draws us closer to our eternal reward. Bob and Lorene are separated after 46 years of married life. He won’t be there for his children and grandchildren. This Father’s Day will weigh heavy on them, if they let it. A fond memory with a laugh would be great for his family. Two memories of Bob bring a smile to my face. An Engineer by profession, and concise and meticulous by nature, he always wore a pocket protector with a mechanical pencil in it to help explain his ideas to those he knew. He still wears it in his pocket. It brought a smile to my face when I saw it. In 1986 he purchased a small tan pickup truck. It’s pretty rusty now. My dear sister-in-law asked Bob often to “Please get rid of that thing.” She didn’t understand the bond between Bob and his faithful pickup truck. It started every time he turned the ignition key. There were special feelings between this man and his truck. His sons saw that bond and had that little rusty pickup truck in the funeral procession from funeral home to church and from Mass to cemetery. When my sister-in-law found out about the pick-up truck in the procession, she put her face in her hands in disbelief, but did not protest. When leaving the cemetery, my prayers and thoughts were for my sister-in-law Lorene and her fam-ily. This Father’s Day will not be easy. But Bob left a lifetime of memories for his wife, children, and grandchildren and it’s theirs to enjoy, for they know what a gentle, loving man he was. 100 WORDS MORE OR LESS by John Mercina MEMORIAL DAY 2003 Another year, another war:, more combat casualties to remember... Harris Life in the Refugee Camps Mici Žakelj, Cilka Žakelj ami Vinko Kr/isnik play with the children in the refugee camp near Judenburg, Austria on December 7, 1946. The refugee barracks are in the background. Photo by Marjan Kocmur. by ANTON ŽAKELJ translated and edited by JOHN ŽAKELJ (Continued) Sunday, December 15, 1946 . Last Friday, Cilka told me she may be pregnant, but today she said her period started again. She’s not feeling well and is staying in bed. Mire played cards in Zu-pancic’s room all night. He didn’t even come to eat last night. He played for 30 hours without any rest. Monday, Dec. 16, 1946 UNRRA gave each person 60 cigarettes, which are Worth about 30 Shillings. I spent 240 Shillings to buy 480 cigarettes from the other refugees, hoping that I will sell them later for a higher price. This evening, one of our refugees, Ervin Markovsek, died in an accident. He was traveling from work in Zelt-Weg, leaned too far out from his vehicle and got hit by the oncoming vehicle. He died instantly. Tuesday, Dec. 17,1946 We cleaned sugar beets all day. It’s getting very cold! Wednesday, Dec. 18,1946 The temperature dropped t° -5° to -12°F below zero. At 10 a.m., we went to the funeral for Ervin Markovsek. Mici and Cilka cleaned Sugar beets all day. We uioved our supply of potatoes from the workshop (where they would freeze) 'nto our room. Cene alone has about 1,000 pounds. (These are potatoes we found hy digging through fanners’ fields after they were done harvesting.) I worked on bobbin lace designs. Saturday, Dec. 21, 1946 For the last 3 days, we’ve been cutting sugar beets, cooking them, straining them through a sieve and cooking them some more. We take turns to keep them cooking all night. Last night, Cilka and I cooked together until 2 a.m., then I was on my own until 4 a.m., then Mici took over from 4 - 8 a.m. We cooked over 600 pounds in 22 hours and got about 50 pounds of syrup. Everyone in our room contributed for the firewood and the beets, with some paying more in money and some paying their share in extra work. I calculated that each pound of beet syrup cost us about 15 Shillings. I delivered another 39 pieces of bobbin lace to the UNRRA store in Judenburg. They owe us 1,600 Shillings. The store is not getting many customers. Customers still come to us in the camp, but we no longer have the lace to sell. Sunday, Dec. 22, 1946 I cut a little Christmas tree in the woods and brought it into our room. We have over 10 inches of snow and a temperature around 12° F. Monday, Dec. 23, 1946 I was in the city all day, shopping for Christmas presents and other things. I was able to use our ration cards to buy a quarter liter of rum. Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1946 I waited in a butcher-shop for over an hour to buy some meat, without success. Finally, I found another shop that was willing to sell me about 7 pounds for 11 ration cards. Cilka received potica, wine and cocoa from the master shoemaker where she has been sewing shoes. Mici baked a potica for myself, Cilka and 3 of our other roommates. Mire wanted her to bake him one, too, but all he has is flour. He was upset when Cilka told him we can make bread, but not potica if he only has flour. He went to the baker and traded his flour for a couple of loaves of white bread. Mire continued to nurse his grudge. He lay down and started snoring loudly. That made Pavle angry enough to wake him up. I received a letter from my brother Vlado with their wedding picture.- They were married in Slovenia a couple of weeks before Cilka and I got married. Vlado’s wife Alenka looks very pretty. This evening we prayed the rosary and marched in procession around our barracks, just as we usually did * The XXII Slovenefest is scheduled for the weekend of July 11-13. At the May 7lh meeting of the Euclid Pensioners, every mother 80 years of age and over received a red carnation and was entered into a free drawing. The winner was honored as “Mother of the Day,” crowned with a tiara and presented with a corsage, as were her two attendants. Needless to say, these mothers were thrilled as they sat on stage- and had their picture taken. Father Francis Mulvanity from St. Paul’s Church added to the reverence of the occasion and said a prayer of special blessing for all of our mothers. The most wonderful surprise of the day, however, Was the performance of Paul Tanchar, who sang several songs written especially for Mothers. He was accompanied by Steve Valencie on the button box and simply delighted the members with his talents. Before not too long, the Warm days of summer will nrrive and two events not to he missed are the Federation °f Slovenian Homes annual Picnic on August 18th with dinner and music provided hy Frank Moravcik. In the 10lh century, as a gesture of friendship, a Scottish king was given land in Loudon with the provision that he build a castle and live in it a portion of each year. Seven centuries later, ' when England and Scotland became united under a common ruler, the land was turned over to London authorities. It was divided into Greater and Middle Scotland Yard, and the London police took up residence there in 1829. Today, Scotland Yard refers to both the metropolitan police force that’s based there, as well as its many local stations. The dates for this two-day celebration of the life of Bishop Frederick Baraga will be September 13 and 14. The English Mass is being held in downtown Indianapolis at the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, and the Slovenian Mass will be held at Holy Trinity parish on the near west side of Indianapolis. Indianapolis Archbishop Daniel Beuchlein will preside at the English Mass on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. A reception will follow at the Indianapolis ArtsGarden in downtown Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Arts-garden is one of the most interesting venues in all of Indianapolis located in the heart of downtown. On Sunday, Sept. 14, the Slovenian Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Church at 11 a.m., followed by the annual banquet of the Bishop Baraga Association. The English and Slovenian Masses are reversed from previous years due to the availability of Archbishop Beuchlein. The hosts for Bishop Baraga Days in Indianapolis are the members of St. Aloysius Lodge #52 K.S.K.J., Archbishop Daniel Beuchlein of Indianapolis, Bishop James H. Garland of Marquette, MI, and the Office for Multi-Cultural Ministries of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Some of the associated expenses in hosting Bishop Baraga Days will be helped with funding from the 2002 K.S.K.J. Convention, The Frances and Jane S. Lausche Foundation, and the Ministry for Slovenes Abroad, Ljubljana. By bringing Bishop Baraga Days to the Indianapolis Archdiocese, members of the lodge are hoping t0 bring greater awareness of Bishop Baraga’s life work to fellow Catholics u1 the Indianapolis area. It’s a Friday in Cleveland, but the banjo player and the accordionists and saxophon-■sts squeezed onto the bandstand signal the arrival of some other occasion at the Slovene Home for the Aged. The polka faithful at the East Side nursing home know it simply as “Champa day” Residents don’t ask, “Is today Tuesday?” or “is today Friday?’ They say, “Is today Champa day” Each week their anticipa-hon builds until Friday, when Champa’s Old Timers, a Pick-up band of two dozen Payers, bring infectious old-w°rld tunes to the Neff Road facility. John Medvešek puts down his piano accordion after serenading three wheel- chair-bound residents and interjects only half-jokingly: “They give us wine to keep our spirits up. We play better after that.” . The second set indeed brings new energy to the room. The band plays a few American tunes (since Sept. 11, the show has ended With “God Bless America”) and a Mexican number. Audience members dance and one woman recruited by the band weaves through the crowd shaking maracas. “It’s a chance to move around and have a little fun with friends,” resident Josephine Škafar says, catching her breath after dancing. The music has even perked a few civic leaders’ ears. Last month Cuyahoga County Comrmissioner Tim McCormack honored the Old Timers for their volunteer-ism at the Slovene Home. And a few years ago, some members recalled, former Mayor Michael White attended a show and honored the group. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 22, 2003 AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 22, 2003 io Voinovich Bill to Tackle ‘Dead Zones’ in Lake Erie WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-OH) on Tuesday, April 29 unveiled legislation that he hopes will help shed light on the recurring problem of “dead zones” in Lake Erie, large low-oxygen areas in the middle of the lake that threaten fish and plant life. Also introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), chairman of the House Subcommittee on Environment, Technology, and Standards, the bill will reauthorize the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research Control Act of 1998, which expired in 2001. The legislation will amend the 1998 Act by authorizing specific funds for research in freshwater sources, where the 1998 act only addressed coastal and marine waters. “The Great Lakes are extremely important to the nation in terms of their ecologic, economic and public health benefit,” Voinovich said. “Since 1995 the occurrence of harmful algal blooms and hypoxia in the Great Lakes has been steadily increasing and is threatening the stability of Lake Erie. I will continue the battle to protect and preserve Lake Erie, and this legislation will help ensure the preservation of Lake Erie for our children and grandchildren.” Algal blooms can cause hypoxia or depleted oxygen levels in water when they die and are decomposed by bacteria. There were always plenty of Camels around the house, and from the age of seven I was sneaking smokes, as did most of the kids I knew. By nine, it was a fairly regular habit. Grandpa retired when I was seven, and he kept a few packs in an old cigar box. If I was around, he’d ask me to bring him a cigarette from the box. I’d bring it already lit and a couple of drags short. He thought it was amusing and I believe he deliberately gave me an opportunity to ‘fetch’ because he did the same with his beer. “Go bring me a beer,” he’d ask in Slovenian, and his 12-ounce bottle was delivered a couple of ounces short. Just about all the boys smoked, and I remember trying the vile little reeds that grew in the vacant lot. Com silk wasn’t used where we lived, but it couldn’t have been worse than those reeds. For a couple of summers when I was riding far afield with my bike, I had a ‘chaw’ of ‘Red Man’ in my cheek and was learning to spit like a veteran. I probably would have given ‘pot’ a try if it was around, but thank God 1 didn’t know of any at the time. When I was 13 my father gave me permission to smoke. He must have known I’d been at it for a while, but he never let on. Mom seemed to be in the dark about my habit, which was unusual because she had a good nose. We used “Sen-Sen,” a breath-freshener of colored granules in paper packs the size of a tea-bag. Perhaps Mom just never imagined the possibility that her darling little boy could be smoking, or maybe Dad told her that he would take care of it: that would explain her seeming naivite. I wanted to smoke a pipe because it was the ultimate ‘cool.’ A pipe was obvious and not easily smoked on the sneak, so it seemed the ultimate proof of manhood. My first act as a legal smoker was to buy a pouch of ‘Blue Boar.’ Bold as brass, I filled up and lit one of dad’s pipes out on the front porch. Now I was certainly a ‘man,’ or so I thought. I had learned how to inhale my cigarettes, and to my regret, I did the same with the pipe. I felt like vomiting but managed to hold it down. That pipe-frH was a painful first experien« at manhood: even chewing tobacco had never affect^ me like this. But persistence developed my tolerance i" short order. I bought my firSl ‘Dr. Grabow’ and smoked11 at the comer baseball field * felt like the luckiest guy ^ town. Within minutes, ^ mother had received three phone calls from n0^ neighbors: “Do you kno" that your son is smoking 1 pipe?” She must have bed1 embarrassed having sheepishly admit that had given me permission.' bet their jaws dropped at ^ news. As of this summer, there will no longer be any doubts about which Slovenian athlete earns the most. It is Radoslav Nesterovic, a center for the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Minnesota Timberwolves. He will be signing a new contract. The 27-year-old Slovenian national team member has become one of the most reliable centers in the world’s strongest league over the last five seasons. This has made him one of the most wanted names during this off-season contract negotiations. Nesterovic’s season is over- Minnesota was knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by defending champions Los Angeles Lakers. Rado averaged 30 minutes playing time, during which he scored an average 11.3 points and grabbed 6.5 rebounds. These statistics, coupled with his reliability and dedication, have not gone unnoticed, and Nesterovic is currently the target of the best NBA clubs. Shortly, he will be making the pleasant choice of deciding which team he will be playing for. His current club is preparing to offer Nesterovic $14 million annually for his services, which would put him in the upper half of the NBA’s earnings list. However, a more realistic outcome sees Nesterovic settling for a slightly lower sum and better playing conditions. Insiders claim that Nesterovic, despite his yearning for warmer weather, will likely remain in Minnesota. However, this will not come at a price of less than $7 million annually. Following in Nesterovic’s footsteps are other Slovenian basketball names, including center Primo Brezed (Indiana Pacers) and swing-man Boštjan Nachbar (Houston Rockets). Although they have not received the playing time that Nesterovic got in his rookie season, their wage of a million dollars per season ranks them among the better paid Slovenian athletes. By comparison, the two receive about as much as football stars Zlatko Zahovič at Portugal’s Benfica, Aleksander Knavs at Germany’s Kais-erlautern and Milenko Ačimovič at England’s Tottenham. From this it is easy to understand why Slovenian basketball players are very eager to make the jump to the NBA, even though they would have a far more nota- ble role if they played for a European club. The first Slovenian to make it to the NBA was Marko Milic in 1997. He was drafted by the Philadelphia 76’ers, playing for them for half a season before being traded to the Phoenix Suns, where he played for two seasons. Fielding a number of star players across Europe, including Sani Bečirovič, Matja Smodiš, Jaka Lakovič, Beno Udrih and others, it is clear that Slovenia has never had such a strong, experienced and recognized basketball line-up at this September’s European Championships. In Sweden, Slovenian players will have the opportunity to show that, not only do they have excellent individual talent, but also ability to work together and defend the Slovenian colors. Despite the fact that previous European Championship games have brought disappointment, many believe the current generation, led by experienced coach Slobodan Subotič, will finally be able to' make a breakthrough and make a serious run for the top places in Europe. Thanks for Phil Hrvatin for this news. Tekst pesmi so uglasili Davorin Jenko, Kamilo Mašek idr. KONCERT PEVSKEGA ZBORA KOROTAN pevovodja Janez Sršen V nedeljo, 25. maja, v Slovenskem narodnem domu na St. Glair Ave. v Clevelandu PEVSKI ZBOR KOROTAN CLEVELAND. OHIO. U S A. Pričetek ob 7. uri zvečer Igra orkester Veseli Godci Vsi lepo vabljeni! Te in take pesmi bodo vsebina letošnjega koncerta. Največji vpliv so imeli starši, posebno mama. Vplivali so SeVeda tudi slovenski duhovniki, frančiškani v žu-Pbiji sv Štefana. Kasneje s° veli vtis naredili name tezuiti prt sv. Ignaciju. . Kako in zakaj ste se °dločUt za redovniški Poklic? O odločanju za duhovniški poklic so mi bili najbližji slovenski frančiškani. Takratni župnik pri sv. Štefanu, p. Edvard Gabrenja, me je posebno navdušil nad svetim in energičnim življenjem sv. Glavne težave so bile ekonomske narave. Dve leti kasneje, 1967., so me izvolili za komisarja (predstojnika slovenskih frančiškanov v Ameriki). To službo sem vršil naslednjih deset let. Leta 1977 sem prevzel službo upravnika romarskega doma v Lemontu. Vsak teden so bile v domu duhovne vaje in duhovne obnove, predavanja, srečanja. Udeleženci so prihajali iz različnih župnij v Chicgu, iz društev ipd. Pripravljati je bilo treba govore, pridige in spovedovati. Politika, kakršno je vodil Kučan do RKC v obdobju svojega predsednikovanja, v osnovnih parametrih ustreza tistemu, kar so tovariši počeli še v času svoje absolutne vladavine. Oni, ki so svoj čas uvedli praznovanje v spomin sežiganja knjig v Ljubljani, so sedaj dobili sodobno varianto cenzure v bloka- di dostopa do udba.net. Najprej 5. in 6. novembra lani, potem še 6. marca letos. Moji dnevi so nabiti z obveznostmi. Hvala Bogu. Ga.
