MINUTES OF THE DIRECTORS’ SEMI-ANNUAL MEETING
Home Office, August 16, 17, I960.
The semi-annual meeting of the Board of Directors began on Tuesday morning, Aug. 1C, 1960,at the Home Office in Chicago, 111., at 9'30 a.m. Present were the following officers: president, Josephine Livek; founder, Marie Prisland; secretary, Albina Novak; treasurer, Josephine Železnikar and auditors, Mary Otoničar, Katie Triller and Anne Podgoršek.
The first item of business on the agenda was the examination of financial ledgers. The audits completed, a visit was made to the Metropolitan State Bank to examine the contents of the safety deposit box. All investments were found in order as specified in the secretary’s statement. The auditors expressed their satisfaction that all financial accounts and documents were found in perfect order. In the afternoon, the Directors continued the meeting with the reading of reports.
Supreme President's Report
Greetings officers, to our second by-annual meeting of the year I960. I am glad to see our Founder able to join us today after an absence of the last meeting through sickness. Also greetings to you Officers that were on a tour to Europe.
The activities and business within our states started early this year. The first state convention was in Illinois May 22nd, in So. Chicago hosted by branch 1G. Six branches were represented.
The Wisconsin State Convention was conducted June 12th. Both of these affairs drew large participation of members and friends. I attended both conventions and noticed a lot of progress since last year. The members have learned to like these sessions where they are able to meet with other members in their state and take part in deliberations. Meetings of this kind bring the members closer together and gives them the opportunity to learn what the other branches are doing to make progress. Branch no. 16 boasts of having no trouble collecting dues, a credit to the secretary
The Pennsylvania State Convention was also held June 12th., at Universal, #96. This branch has not yet announced the mdnute?, of the proceedings of their Convention as is expected from all Conventions so that they are published in Zarja The Dawn. I hope we will hear from them soon
On information given by the State President, sister M. Tomsic, it was aluo successful. I have sent my greetings and best wishes to them.
State Presidents, M. Muller of Illinois, R. Kraemer of Wisconsin und M. Tomsic of Penna. are to be complimented on their fine leadership.
Three more Conventions are coming up, namely: Minnesota, September 11th, Ohio, October 2nd—and Colorado, August 28th. I have rceived an invitation from: Colorado and shall attend, if my health permits.
The bowling tournament held in Joliet this spring was larger in participation than last year. This proves that our officers have put an extra effort in the game, for which we are thankful.
I received an invitation by letter from Rev. Odilo Hain-selc of Lemont to send official representation from our organization to the Mass dedicated to the departed Bishop Rožman, July 3rd. Sister Josephine Železnikar and I attended. Thirty seven organizations were represented. I did not attend the annual pilgrimage in Lemont this year, because I was on vacation at that time, but have been informed that a large number of members and friends attended as usual.
Our Pre-Convention campaign is moving slowly but I believe when branch meetings will commence again this Fall, more interest will be shown. We must reach our quota! And we will if everyone participates. I suggest
you read the Founder’s article in the August Zarja which explains how to go about it; it’s fine reading.
I would like again to remind you that we will have to revise our By-Laws. I had in mind, when State Presidents were elected, to institute junior branches who would conduct their own meetings with a senior member as guide. According by our By-Laws they are restricted of voice at meetings. Therefore, it is a must that the By-Laws be revised as they are unjust and hold back progress. I would suggest an extra day after the next meeting in January for revision.
This is also the time to contact our Actuary for new business for the Convention. We will discuss this further on.	Josephine	Livek

The Scholarship Committee has granted these scholarships for 1960-61:
Ann Frances Bresak, member of Br. 40, Lorain, Ohio. Her mother and grandmother are good members of the branch for many years. Ann Frances is enrolled at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pa., where she will follow a scientific course of studies.
Larry J. Pheil, Lakewood, Ohio, son of member Hose Pheil of br. 21, Cleveland. He will study at Bowling Green Univ. and major in dentistry. Mother, grandmother and four sisters are S.W.U. members.

State of Wisconsin held their State Convention in Milwaukee on June 12th. The Convention and 30th anniversary of Br. 43 were held together making it a dual affair Besides the social success of the event, there was much good done for the progress of our Union. It was a pleasure to meet with our good and friendly members. To Br. 43, sincere congratulations on this jubilee and the best to you in all future endeavors.
At this meeting, it is my suggestion that we look over the by-laws in preparation to the coming convention. These things need time for study and it will not be too early if we begin now to think of the ways and means we can bring about a new class of insurance which is the desire of our young members.
Activity in the membership campaign is not as spirited as we would like it to be. If every Supreme Officer would write an article in Zarja to inspire and encourage others and to offer constructive suggestions for the members to follow, It would begin a spark of enthusiasm through the membership. The Supreme President should pass this suggestion on to the officers not present. Americans have a word for it: Sales Talk! With this thought in mind, I wrote a short playlet and published it in my column in the August Zarja. I hope it finds actors in many branches who will play it and thus, promote our organization and Increase the membership.
Head the words of our Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Claude Okorn, who said: You have an ideal organization! Work for it with conviction!
This concludes my report. As we progress with the agenda I shall make other suggestions. I hope that this meeting wrill bear much success for our beloved organization.	Marie Prisland
Supreme Secretary’s Report
I greet you all most sincerely and wish you a pleasant ®tay in Chicago. May all the deliberations of this meeting bring our Zveza stupendous progress. I’m certain that each of you has something worthile to propose and by putting all our ideas into action, we are bound to reach the success which is our goal and desire. Special greetings to °ur Founder Mrs. Prisland, who did not attend our last meeting because of illness. The best of health to you for ^any years.
During the six months first in 1960, 87 members de-
parted from our midst into the Great Beyond. 84 of the departed were members of Class A and their beneficiaries received $8,400.00. There were three claims in Class B amounting to $450.00. The total in claims paid was $8,850.00. Our investments are now yielding a higher interest which means more money tor our funds.
The Pre-Convention membership drive is not at all satisfactory. Only 54 new members have been enrolled in the first two months of the campaign. I hope most sincerely that all the branches will take an active part in it from now on until December 31st, is the deadline of the campaign.
On May 22nd I attended the 30th anniversary celebration of #41, in Cleveland, Ohio. Over 300 guests attended and I must report that it was one of the nicest gatherings that I have ever attended. Congratulations to the diligent officers and members. God bless you all.
My trip to Europe was enjoyed very much. I was absent for six weeks; however, I tried my very best to make up for the lost time prior to the trip by working overtime and the same was the case after I returned. I wish to express my fullest appreciation to all who assisted me and especially to the Editor Corinne Leskovar, for her untiring assistance. Many thanks also to our treasurer, Mrs. Železnikar and my staff of assistants among whom is my daughter Gloria, who is a very helpful clerk.
Such far trips to Europe are becoming more and more popular because of the fast means of travel and I hope that wre will have many more excursions in the near future. I’ll be glad to assist and put to use my many experiences for the welfare of our members.
The State Days and State conventions have brought us many interesting suggestions. With active meetings and conferences, we should be able to offer many propositions to the general convention which will be held at Ely in May, 1961. This time is not too far off and preliminary preparations should be one of the main discussions at this meeting. We must have suggestions to offer to our Actuary in order that he will determine for us, through our statistics, and in accord with the Insurance Codes, what we will be able to offer to our membership for the future. Because of the necessity of attracting our youth to the Union to ascertain future progress, we must all be concerned and offer constructive ideas. This way, we can realize the best possible future for the organization and the individual members.
Last but not least, I urge all branches to try their utmost to have representation at the coming general convention if not by actual delegation, then by all means, work for an honorary delegate.

Greetings, Directors, assembled at today’s meeting. I am happy that we are all together once more—since at the last meeting sister Marie Prisland was absent due to ill health. Also, our two Directors who were traveling abroad are with us today, Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak and Auditor, sister Mary Otoničar. To all, a happy reunion.
My six month report will deal with the totals of the report which was checked in the Supreme Secretary’s financial statement. I also agree that all was found to be in accord. Therefore, the

fully so that the dividends we are receiving are the highest. Thanks, also, to the Supreme Secretary, A1 Novak for the mutual cooperation we have between our two offices.
1 attended the Bowling Tournament, in Joliet this spring and it was very successful. Many teams were entered and the alleys were very nice. We must give proper credit to the officers who undertook this task and carried it to a successful conclusion.
On May 22nd we gathered at So. Chicago to take part In the 2nd annual Illinois State Convention. It was well-attended and well-prepared by branch 10.
On Juiy 3rd, I joined the Supreme President in representing the organization at the memorial service in honor of the late Bishop Gregory Rozman who is buried in Lemont, 111
Zveza Day in Lemont is again recorded as a day when many of our members gathered at the Shrine of Marija Pomagaj. The attendance was very good and the weather ideal. The program was arranged by Corinne Leskovar and it looked as if all who were present enjoyed seeing the happy dances and songs of our young generation with Mr. Joe Gomilar accompanying them on the accordian. We missed our other Supreme Officers and hope they will be with us next time On that occasion, we again laid a wreath of flowers at the grave of Rev. Report of the President of the Auditing Committee
Accept my wannest greetings. I hope and wish that our meeting will bring the Union and members many future successes. It makes me happy to see Mrs. Prisland with us and I wish her many healthy years ahead. Together with the other Auditors, we checked the financial books of the Supreme Secretary, Treasurer, President of the Scholarship and Benefit Fund and Editor of Zarja. We also visited the Metropolitan State Bank where the safety deposit box is kept and checked the records of our investments. We found everything was done in accordance with the lecords and in the best order. We are most happy that the interest rates have gone up so that we can look forward lo an increase in income for our expense fund. Soon, we will be preparing for our next Convention which will be a big expense.
As you know, this year I had the pleasure to visit the known European Shrines such as, Fatima, Lourdes, Rome as well as Venice. Also, three weeks were spent in Slovenia where I hnve many relatives and friends. I advise all our members, those especially who have relatives there, to visit your homeland where you will find much enjoyment. No other place in the world is the same. It was very inspiring and worthwhile to make the pilgrimage to Komu azui the other holy places, also, as a person really feels reborn when you have experienced the sight of the shrines and crowds of people around you.
As regards the numbei of new members enrolled in the present campaign, I regre* that we are slowing down in our work. I hope that from now on there will be new energy shown, and we’ll have a good conclusion to the drive.
We have already reported that the Ohio branches are making ready the Ohio State Convention m October. Compliments to the hard-working officers who have this job in hand. My compliments to all the states who have had Zreza Days and conventions in the past year.
In May, the 30th anniversary of our sister branch, no. 41 in Cleveland was celebrated with a gala banquet at which I was also present. Congratulations to the organizers and all the loyal officers and members who cooperated so well and prepared a wonderful day for their guests.
To all our branches who will observe their anniversaries this year, I wish succes# and progress.

Greetings to all here today! We have gathered to examine the financial activity and business of our Union as it is recorded in the books of our Supreme Secretary, Treasurer, Editor of Zarja and President of the Scholarship and Benefit Fund, as well as to check the contents of our safety deposit box at the bank and see if all is in order. It was all done and found to be in perfect order— with the books and records conforming w'ith one another. Sincere thanks to Mrs. Prisland who has always made the proper investments of our finances so that we are receiving good interest now. Furthermore, I am happy to see Mrs. Prisland recovered and with us today as we missed her greatly.
In the month of May, we had the pleasure of havinK our State Convention for lllinois-Indiana in So. Chicago. It was very successful we believe and we were happy to be the hostess branch
Lemont’s Zveza Day was also attended by a group of br. 1(> members and myself. The program of the day was very enjoyable and our thanks go to all who worked to make it so.
I hope that our meeting will go along with unified thoughts and decisions, and that we will have some progressive results to these deliberations. Special thanks to our Spiritual Advisor, Rev. Claude Okorn for his wonderful and inspiring messages in Zarja which we all love

Report of the Third Supreme Auditor
Esteemed Directors,
I greet you all at this, our semi-annual meeting, in hopes we will conve»e successfully for our branches and members of our great organization.
A warm welcome home to our Supreme Officers who were visiting Europe and a bon voyage to those who have not as yet returned
To Mrs. Prisland, our Founder, who was unable to attend our last meeting, due to illness, we hope God has restored her health. She was missed very much.
With the other auditors, I have examined all financial ledgers of the Supreme Secretary, Treasurer, Editor of Zarja, President of the Scholarship Fund, all investments, and found them in perfect order. Our thanks to these officers for their wonderful work.
The Pre-Convention membership campaign which is now in full swing, we hope will end successfully. Namely, many honorary delegates to our convention in May 19G1 at Ely, Minn., this beautiful northern country of lakes and resorts!
I am sure if we all worked hard, we would succeed. Appeal to those who are not as yet our members, ask them to join. Explain the purpose of our organization. There is no better organization for women and girls! Keep your branches active so they may see the progress you are making.
It is with joy and interest we note in Zarja that many State Days and Conventions are being held. Congratulations to you all. Minnesota State Day will be held in Eve-leth, Minn, on Sept. 11th. Branch no. 19 is in charge and a wonderful program and banquet is planned. Again, we shall meet our friends from all branches in Minnesota. Our branch, too, will be there in large number as we have a chartered bus of which I am in charge.
Being the reporter of our branch, I try to keep the members informed each month of our successes and activities in our beloved Zarja. May God bless this meeting.

Esteemed Directors,
This w'ill be one of our important pre-convention meetings. Activity for our membership must be planned so that we can put our e«ergy to good use in the remaining year until we gather in Ely, Minnesota next May.
As it pertains to Zarja, I shall continue to be of service to the members as I have in the past, favoring any and all reports, pictures and features of our members sent by the reporters and officers, as space permits. The •question of space, and our variations in the size of Zarja, brings me to my first point and that is: that we schedule which months of the year we will have Zarja on 32 pages and which will be 16 page issues. In this way, I can ask the reporters to observe the limitations of space according to the month. My suggestion is that the months of February, March, May, September, November and December should be 32 page issues and the remaining months, January, April, June, August and October, in the 16 page size. Needless to say, the important official reports will continue to receive preference whatever the month; however, it will be more satisfactory to know in advance the space allowed. It will be understood that the extra items such as wedding anniversaries, memoriams to deceased members and relatives and other such features will be held over to larger lssus if they re received for publication in busy months.
This schedule will permit me to have an editor’s column and at least half page space for campaign promotions in the larger editions.
In the past six month period we are reporting today, our Union celebrated Mother's Day with a May issue of
Zarja honoring all the mothers of S.W.IT. There were 30 mothers’ write-ups in the English language and 30 In Slovenian—showing what perfect balance we have between the two as to language and interest. An equal number of reporters have also been writing monthly, so that we have good representation between the generations.
You will, no doubt, discuss a youth program. In that line, I wish to remark on the fine response we have received from our juveniles who contribute to the Junior Page. This activity is perhaps the most far-reaching to junior membership and I urge you to consider ways and means by which the Junior Page could be given its full use. We must encourage our young members to become more interested and to contribute to this page.
Another activity which has been more and more expanded is bowling reports. I should like to see more activity from our bowling leagues around the country such as in Cleveland, Pittsburgh. Milwaukee and Chicago.
My thanks to Father Claude, our Spiritual Advisor and our Supreme Officers who have contributed their time and talents to our Zarja with interesting reading matter. I hope they will continue the same in the future.
As you know, our Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak, has just returned from a 6 week tour abroad where she was doubly active, as a leader of one of our Union’s three tours to Slovenia and as the energetic proponent of our organizations ideals, of whom we can all be proud. My compliments to her also, for her thorough preparations in the Home Office so that during her absence the work was carried on smoothly and it was a pleasure to substitute in her place. Welcome home to her as well as to our wonderful officer and friend, Mrs. Otoničar who is home after a similar trip.
At two of our Chicago area Zveza functions, it was my pleasure to participate as a Supreme Officer and that was at our Illinois-Indiana State Convention, May 22nd at So. Chicago, 111., and at Zvcza Day in Lemont, 111., on July 17th. In South Chcago I was very happy to observe the degree of Interest shown by some of our members who discussed many mutual ideas and problems. In Lemont, I was a member of the local branch no. 2 committee arranging for the day’s program. On both these occasions, a successful outcome was enjoyed by the branches, and I believe, the name and reputation of our Union was enhanced and increased.

MOTIONS AND DECISIONS SCHOLARSHIP AND BENEFIT FUND. The Directors discussed at length the possibility of a change in the distribution of the future scholarships. It was agreed that the rules and regulations be revised at the coming convention and Mrs. Prisland as president of the said fund, to prepare a new plan. The Benefit fund is not strong enough at the present time to promote any welfare work on the larger scale and the request received was tabled for the time being.
INVESTMENTS. Director, Mrs. Prisland, reported on the present changes in the rate ol' interest on our investments The Directors have complete faith in her decisions for future investments and agree that she continues to use her discretion in the matter of investments as she has in the past. It was also decided that interest on Class B and Juvenile Department funds be put into the expense fund and Class A will go into its own mortuary fund.
ZARJA. The Directors are pleased with the editing of Zarja and agree with the suggestions made by the Editor. The most diligent reporter among the Juniors is Donna Sietz of Branch 50, Cleveland, Ohio who will be remembered with an award to be presented to her at the coming Ohio State Convention. The hope of all is that enthusiasm among the junior members will increase especially in the way of more write-ups for the Junior Page. The Editor promised to do her best in this promotion. The playlet in Slovenian written by Mrs. Prisland for the August Zarja received many compliments. The Directors recommend to all branches that they find members with interest in stage work and encourage the presentation of this playlet which brings out the aims and purposes of our organization.
CAMPAIGN. The Pre-convention campaign is not moving as well as was expected. No one has as yet reached the quota to be an Honorary Delegate to the Convention which will be held in Ely, Minnesota next May. To promote more interest among the branches where there is a limited field for campaining, the Directors agreed on the following additions:
Any member who will get a total of ten new members together, in Classes A, B, or Juvenile department will receive a cash award of Five Dollars. Also, watch for the announcements made by the “telephone girls” in Zarja, she’ll have a special message for you for the month of December!
A NEW PLAN OF INSURANCE. The Directors deliberated very enthusiastically on a new plan for our youth. It was decided that our Actuary prepares a new educational plan which will be presented to the coming convention for adoption. Under consideration is also an extension of five years in Class B, that Is to give applicants between ages 55—60 a chance to join this class.
BY-LAWS. President, Mrs. Livek, read certain sections of the By-Laws where changes may be helpful In the promotion of our work. Several recommendations were made and Mrs. Marie Prisland was named a Chairman of the By-Law Committee for the coming convention. All Branches are hereby advised to discuss what changes may be necessary at the December meeting and mail the recommendations at once to Mrs. Prisland. All recommendations from the branches must be in the hands of the chairman, Mrs. Prisland, by March 1, 1961.
CONVENTION DATE. The 12th regular convention of the S.W.U. will be held at Ely, Minnesota with formal opening on Sunday, May 21st, 1961 and the business sessions will start on Monday, May 22, 1961. Further particulars will be published Immediately following the January meeting of the Directors.
STATE CONVENTIONS. The Colorado State Convention will be held on Sunday, August 28, I960, in Pueblo, Colo., branch no. 3, in charge. President Mrs. Livek will attend. The Minnesota State Day and meeting will be held on September 11, I960, at Eveleth, Minn, with no. 19 as hostess branch. Editor Corinne Leskovar will represent the Board of Directors. The Ohio-Michigan day will be held in Cleveland, Ohio on October 2, i960, and Supreme Secretary Albina Novak will be attending.
The president, Mrs. Livek closed the meeting with prayer at 5 P.M. on Wednesday, August 17th and wished the Directors a pleasent and safe return to their homes.

The Sign of the Cross
The sign of the cross is one of the most important and one of the most frequently used expressions of our religion. The sign of the cross is the salute of the true follower of Christ. In particular, it is a special salute of a Catholic.
It is the sacred sign first taught to the feeble fingers of the child at its mother’s knee; it is the sacred sign traced by the faltering fingers of the dying Catholic. From birth to death it is a holy sign that continually reminds the Catholic of the source from which all spiritual blessings come—the cross.
The two most common forms of the cross are the large sign of the cross made by touching the forehead, the breast, the left and the right shoulders. The cross thus covers the body—the head and heart. The smaller sign of the cross is traced upon the forehead, lips, and breast.
When we cross ourselves, we should do this with the real devotion. It should be the real sign of the cross consciously feeling how it includes the whole of us, our thoughts, our attitudes, our body and soul, every part of us at once, how it consecrates and sanctifies us.
Why do we make the sign of the cross? To remind us of the Blessed Trinity-—Father, Son and Holy Ghost. We repeat their names. To remind us that the son of God died on a cross for all men. Before Calvary it was a sign of disgrace. Christ made it the thing of glory and power. Without redemption, suffering would have been only suffering: now it is holy suffering.
The sign of the cross stirs up our faith. It recalls that God is one and God is three: it professes our faith; it identifies the Catholic.
We make the sign of the cross before we pray to collect and compose ourselves and fix our minds and hearts and wills upon God. We make it when we finish praying in order that we may hold fast the gift we have received from God. In temptations we bless ourselves to be strengthened, in danger to 'be protected. The cross is signed upon us in blessings in order that the fullness of God’s life may flow into the soul and sanctify us wholly. Making this sign recalls the limitless love of Him who died upon the cross. We determine to return love for love.
We can obtain victory through the cross as Emperor Constantine did. He was invading Italy to do battle with his opponent Maxentius. During the campaign which ensued he is said to have seen a cross in the heavens bearing the inscription, “In this sign thou shall conquer.” During the following night the same vision appeared in his sleep and Christ, appearing with it, admonished Constantine to place the cross on his standard. Fighting under this new banner, Constantine defeated his rival, Maxentius, at the historic battle of Milvian Bridge. We should look upon the cross for strength and courage. “No cross, no crown” is a familiar phrase. If you wish to live with Christ in eternity, you must live with Him on earth, for He said, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me."
Lemont Scene of Annual Pilgrimage and Zveza Day
God was good to us at Lemont this year—with a sky full of sun and a little breeze from the trees to give the right atmosphere foi the annual pilgrimage to the Marian shrine, Marija Pomagaj—Our Lady of Perpetual Help. As we gathered at the Baraga Home that morning to await the forming of the procession, many cars drove up, buses from all over the midwest and family groups could be seen dotting the hillside. Mrs. Josephine Železnikar, Supreme Treasurer and I, took our places at the head of the procession and following Rev. Fr Odilo and altar boys, and made our way along the beautiful path toward the Grotto. In my hand was the floral spray—of red gladiola tied with white—which signified a memorial tribute to the late Very Rev. Alexander Urankar, burled at the cemetery there on the hill. We all paused midway in our procession to lay the wreath and pay at this grave as well as to remember the late Bishop Rozman and Fr. Kazimir who are resting nearby. Around the miniature Lake Bled to the Grotto, our procession wended its way with the Rosary on our lips and we came to the outdoor church where hundreds of pilgrims were already awaiting the start of the Mass. Singing by the Choral Club of br. 2 ladies, organist, Prof. Alfred Fishinger and sermon by Rev. Odilo completed the service. The sun just shone upon us that hour, in its full strength.
Soon after we left the Grotto, dinner was served to 200 guests at Baraga Home. This dinner was »cnimptious
—	all kinds of treats including potica to make the roast beef taste eevn better. Some of our excellent cooks who had charge of the kitchen were awake all night to prepare the festive meal and the talents of Anne Zorko, Frances Zibert, Agnes Marrazzo, Mary Poldan, Albina Grimsich, Millie Paisoli, Julia Pavlin, Jenny Puhek, Anna Stare, and Jennie Oblak were quite apparent in the results of the fine meal. Waitresses who served were: Frances Gomilar, Stephanie Osterman, Jean Kovačič, Ivanka Rebrica, Maria Sedlasek and Marlene Marrazzo. At the door, handling all tickets were Josie Železnikar and Liz Zefran. Here, we might add a special note of thanks to Father Christopher, the kitchen manager at Baraga Home, for his wonderful cooperation and help.
To help defray the expenses of the day, we had ticket booklets sold by our members for two beautiful gifts, a
clock radio and a pair of Slovenian dolls (Dolls were donated by branch pres. Al. Novak, who said they took her place at Zveza Day since she was 3,000 miles away in Slovenia then.) In charge of this project was Liz Zefran who singlebandedly disposed of them and had marvelous results to show for it!
Our picnic atmosphere on the grounds was centered about the pavilion where good beverages and sandwiches were available to our guests.
Bartenders were husbands of our members, namely: Walter Muller, Joe Gomilar, John Blatnick, Lud Leskovar, Ray Kochevar, Joe Kochevar, and Joe Oblak, and our chief of the entire day’s operation was our secretary, Mary Muller, who had her busy headquarters there. Mary’s boys, Marty and Mike, also formed part of the committee—and had to pitch right in whenever she called.
For the afternoon’s program, it was a treat to have Fr. Christopher arrange a portable stage—(hay wagon without the hay) and microphone for me so that the guests sat on the hill side and it was like an outdoor theater. They say true artists are those who rise to an emergency and perform well even tho they are not rehearsed. So it was in the case of our program and Mr. Joe Gomilar. He and son, Ronald, (who was to be on the program to accompany our community singing) didn’t know when they arrived in Lemont at 1 p.m. that our folk dancing group came without benefit of accompanist or music, (a calamitous situation) and that we had to find a replacement at once for the program was to begin at 3. Joe’s assurances that he brought his accordian along, just in case, and would play for us, saved the day! Thus, a program of dancing and singing took place. The dancing, by the Radio Club Folk Dancers of Chicago and the singing by Brica Planinšič, 4 year old performer who delighted the audience with a number of Slovenian folk songs. To lead the community singing which concluded the afternoon entertainment, we called upon our own Justine Cieblinski whose voice carried clearly over the mike and really put pep Into the songs.
When time for departure came, there were many goodbyes and hand waves sending off the visitors to all parts of the country. It was a perfect summer Sunday.

No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. — The summer vacation being over we will a-gain assume our meetings. The first Fall meeting will be held on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 2:00 P.M. in the Church Hall. At this meeting we will discuss the preparations for the supper we are giving for the benefit of the new Sisters Convent our parish is erecting. The supper will be served from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Sunday, Sept. 25th at the St. Cyril and Methodius Church Hall. The following committee is in charge: Mary Godez, Chairman: Anna Zavrl, Co-Chairman; Frances Melanz, Kitchen; Anna Modiz, Dinning room; Marie Prisland, Publicity; Margaret Fischer, Tickets.
The tickets have been distributed among the members. Additional tickets can be obtained by calling Mrs. Godez, Dial 7-7667, Mrs. Vertacic, Dial 2-4789 or Margaret Fischer, Dial 7-3931. The price of the ticket is $1.50 for a full supper including dessert. Members, please try and do your best to sell the tickets for the proceeds are going for a worthy cause.
I would like to remind the members who were so kind to accept the ticket books to try and return them sold at the next meeting in Sept. Last month I collected assessment from members at their homes, who are unable to attend our meetings. It was a pleasure to renew their acquaintances. I also visited with our good friend and member Mrs. Josephine Kotnick in "Ljubljana” who is responsible for my enrolling her two daughter-in-laws, Mrs. Emma Kotnick and Mrs. Martha Kotnick and their four children. Mrs. Kotnick also helped to enroll her good, neighbor Mrs. Clarissa Cvetan as a social member. We welcome you new members to our branch. A hearty thank-you to Mrs. J. Kotnik. We have now seven new members this month. We will try to enroll more before the campaign closes.
We are expressing our deepest sympathy to our member, Mrs. Mary Germain, on the loss of her good husband who died last month. May he rest in peace!
At the September meeting we will honor the birthdays of all the members whose birthdays were in July, August and September. We expect a large attendance and a fine birthday party.

September 10th will mark the 10th anniversary since the passing of Ann Zorko Bogolin member of Branch 2, Chicago, Illinois. Her memory will live forever in our hearts!
No. 2, Chicago, III. — Our Sept. meeting will be held on the 8th—and we will celebrate August and Sept. birthdays since we didn’t meet for a month. There will be reports on our Zveza Day in Lemont and other plans discussed for the fall term. Pres. A1 Novak is back from; her trip abroad and has promised to tell of her interesting travel experiences.
Since last writing this column, we had a sad event happen—the death of Mrs. Lillian Kozek, long-time Supreme Officer and br. 2 secretary for many years prior to her accident. For six years, she suffered painful invalidism and God called her to her rest on July 28th. Pres, of br. 2, Albina Novak led the prayers at her bier and the Supreme Board was also represented at the funeral by Supreme Treasurer, Mrs. Železnikar and former Supreme officers Josephine Racic of Cleveland and Josephine Sumic of Joliet besides hundreds of friends and members of the branch and Choral Club. May her soul rest in sweet peace!

No. 13, San Francisco, Calif. — This article will be devoted entirely to our "California Zveza Day”, reminding each and everyone of the plans for SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25,	1960,
8:30 A.M. Holy Mass at the Church of Nativity. It is suggested that those able should attend communion with a prayer for the success and continued good leadership of Zveza. Breakfast will be served at the Cliff House overlooking our famed Golden Gate. Thos^ who had the good fortune of attending breakfast at the Cliff House two years ago will remember the fun and good food and therefore be ready for a second serving. Of course, each member will pay for her breakfast, the sum most nominal. Rose Scoff, our State President, has plans for the
day that will keep all satisfied and happy; all she asks is your support on HER DAY. It is a difficult thing for the West to plan a Zveza Day the equivalent to the East as our distances out here are so much greater and folks simply can’t spend two days traveling for a meeting. Rose wrote and tried to have Zveza Day in another city, and branch, but got a negative reply and therefore Zveza Day will be in San Francisco for the third year, calling it California’s Zveza Day. Bring a friend, as we are glad to welcome any guest or member and the more the merrier. This article is a reminder ol our Supreme State President’s article appearing in the July issue. MINN. ZVEZA DAY will be held in Eveleth on Sunday, Sept. 11th! All of the branches in Minnesota are invited (others, too, if possible!) and we are looking forward to a representative group from each of them! MINNESOTA BRANCHES MEET IN EVELETH
No. 19, Eveleth, Minn. — Last year when 1 attended the Ely “Zveza Day” celebration I was called into a room where a conference was going on and told that if I agreed to take the chairmanship for the 1960 gathering, Eveleth would lake it. With the request coming from Mrs. Mary Lenich, who is always so wonderful about co-operating in any venture, I agreed, although 1 must admit it was rather reductantly. Now I must bring this to date by saying that what I dreaded has been turned into a most pleasant task. 1 have never worked with a more genial and willing group of women.
The members of the general arrangements committee, Mary Lenich, Frances Sterle, Mary Lushene, Antonia Nemgar, and Katy Pollack, report that all is in readiness for a most enjoyable day. I sincerely hope that you all have your banquet tickets by now so that you will not be disappointed the last minute as we have a limited seating capacity.
It is very important that all assemble at the City auditorium, located at 421 Jackson St., by 10:00 A.M. The luncheon committee, Margaret Lenich, Mary Jagunich, Anne Kinkela, Dolly Agasie, Katy Pollack, Pauline Turnbull, Frances Mohar, and Frances Fister, will be serving coffee and delicious Slovenian baked goodies from 9:00 A.M. until we leave.
The group will go in a body to the Holy Family Church for 10:30 A.M. Mass, where seats will be reserved for us. The St. Cecelia Choir has promised to sing Slovenian Hymns, which are so very near and dear to the hearts of our elder members.
After the Mass there will be a short business session at which we assure you there will be no lengthy discussions. We feel that this Is a day for fraternization and enjoyment.
The banquet will be gin at 1:00 P.M. with the Holy Family Church Guild serving, thus you are assured of having a very good meal. Do you have your banquet ticket? If not, call your secretary as all reservations must be in well in advance of the banquet date. Angeline Sterle and Mary Hoppa are in charge of banquet tickets.

Pueblo, Colo. — Golden years numbering 50 were celebrated by Mr. & Mrs. Louis Raspet of 305 Spring St., on April 24tli at their home in Pueblo. Friends and relatives gathered to honor the couple and this picture shows them before their well-laden anniversary table. Mr. Raspet is retired from the C.F. & I. now and Mrs.

Raspet's houswifely duties leave her enough time that she can see her Zveza sisters on such occasions as the 30th anniversary of br. 63, Denver, of which she is the organizer. She is also the former secretary of br. 3 and held this position for many years.
The Raspets have two sons, Louis and Harry and two daughters, Frances and Heddy.

Euclid, Ohio — On January 9th, Mr. & Mrs. John J. Gabrenya of 22100 Ivan Ave„ celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a High Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Christine’s church in Euclid. The couple was then feted at a gala reception held that evening at the Charlite Restaurant. Mrs. Gabrenya is a loyal member of branch 14 and is beloved by all her sister-members. Mr. Gabrenya is a businessman and has been very active in fraternal organizations.
There are four children: Mrs. Albina De Wolf, Edward of Glenview,
111., Louis and William and nine grandchildren.

No. 14, Euclid, Ohio — The August meeting had a very poor attendance; but this was to be expected due to the hot evening and also many of our members are vacationing. Our President, Amalia Legat, made the meeting short and closed it as usual wtth prayers for all sick and well members.

Globokar was absent, and we learned that her mother, Sister Frances Gerch-man, was very ill. Also absent from the August meeting was Sister Mary Iskra. She and her husband Frank were vacationing in Florida. Our thoughts were with you’ all, and we hope to see you at our Sept. meeting. Remember this will be our quarterly birthday party.
Married in July was the son of our recording secretary, Antonia Sustar. Daniel wed a lovely girl in Mentor, Ohio. Congratulations and good luck in your married life.

New Horizons—(borrowing a political cliche), is what Joliet Branch #20 bowlers will aspire to this forthcoming season. Action will take place at our league’s favorite spot, Rivals Bowl, the evening of September 12th at 6:45 SHARP. To the new faces on the scene, Ann Ariagno and Ann Pic-co, a hearty welcome! To the 1 year through the 20 plus year and including the “revolving door type" bowler, may the ’60—’61 season prove to be the year that all previous individual records are smashed.
The team line-up will be compiled and distributed to every bowler on opening night. The first meeting of the season of all bowling members on the adoption of rules and salaries will follow the initial night of bowling.
A reminder of a new and important rule approved at the general meeting at the close of last season, which goes into effect the opening night of this season: Bowling fee is increased to $1.50—Kitty fund will be 75<*—Total per night $2.25.

No. 20, Joliet, III. — A Papal Blessing from Pope John XXIII was bestowed upon Elaine Troppe and Capt. Harold Allan Fleming of U.S. Army in St. Joseph’s Church, July 23rd as theye were united in marriage by Msgr. M. J. Butala at the 11 o’clock nuptial high mass.
Elaine Troppe is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ferd Troppe from N. Broadway, while captain Harold Allan Fleming is the son of Mrs. Joseph Fleming Staten Island, N.Y. and the late Mr. Fleming.
Four bridesmaids and three ushers with the best man comprised the bridal party, while the brides’ niecp and nephew carried the ring and flowers.
The wedding party held Us breakfast at the White Fence Farm; later, St. Joseph’s hall provided the setting for the evening reception for three hundred. The couple will reside temporarily in Pasedena, Calif. Elaine has been our member for many years, and also had title as lieutenant of the Senior drill team, she also instructed the junior girls. Elaine will always be remembered as one who was always willing to cooperate, and who attended many branch’s activities. She was also past prefect of St. Mary’s Sodality
To Capt. Fleming and the new Mrs. Fleming, we congratulate you and may your married life be one of jov and harmony, and may the years a-head hold every happiness for you.
The family of Mr. and Mrs. Ancel had returned from a two week vacation trip to McCrory, Ark., which town is only 90 miles from the well-known Little Rock.
Also Mrs. John (Bertha) Kennick and Joan had returned from their three week vacation to various parts in California, where they also stopped at Disneyland, Las Vegas was also a stop on their return home. We are all glad to have them back and their experiences of their trip were most interesting.

hich, Mrs. Mayme Fedo from N. Raynor Ave., and Mrs. Ursula Ambrose. Confined at home was Mrs. Anne Fandak, while her husband, Anton Fandak was confined at the hospital three weeks. We hope that health has been restored to all our sick members by this time and that they will enjoy a permanent recovery.
Our condolences to the bereaved members of our branch who lost their dear ones: Mrs. Theresa Zaletel age 95, mother of our member, Mrs. Elizabeth Kastelic, passed away in the home of her daughter. She was the oldest member of our parish. She is survived also by two sons and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Barbara Dragovan also mourns the lost of her husband Mr. Martin Dragovan age 81, who passed away at the hospital. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Dragovan, three daughters and four sons.
Our member Mrs. Catherine Suho-dolc mourns the loss of her husband John who passed away after a lingering illness at the age of 64 years. He was well known here and had his home on Clement St. Besides his wife, he is mourned also by a daughter and three sons. One son lost his life in action, during the second World War. He is also survived by grandchildren and many other relatives.
Our member Mrs. Anna Stucikel mourns the loss of her husband Clarence, who died suddenly at his home. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, and sister, Mrs. Agnes Koerber who Is also our member. May they all rest in peace.
Our member of the bowling league has moved to Barrington, 111., Mrs. Jean Nickeleski, the former Jean Kubinski. We hope that at various occasions she will be able to visit with her freinds back here in Joliet. Good luck to you, Jean, at your new home.
When the American Legion Post 1080 had its installation last week the following members of our branch were also installed as officers of the Auxiliary: Mrs. Edward (Olga) Ancel as president, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Mahon, (the former captain of cadets)
as secretary and Mrs. Joseph (Barbara) Kociuba as Chaplain. The installation took place at the Legion headquarters with the Invocation by the Msgr. M. J. Butala, the organizer of the Post 1080.
At this time we want to extend our congratulations to the hard working members in the Auxiliary, and may all their endeavors be a success “For God and Country”.
After a three months’ rest period, our first meeting in the mid-summer months will take place Sept. 18th at the Ferdinand hall on Clay St. Members please take notice and attend.
The son of Mr. Frank Terlep from Oakland Ave., was recently married in St. Joseph’s Church. The wedding of Robert Terlep and Miss Stanislaus was officiated by Msgr. M. J. Butala. The wedding reception was held at St. Joseph's Hall at the park. Our congratulations to the newly-wedded couple and may all their future years be as blissful as their wedding day.
Our congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hochevar on their 55th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Hochevar (Josephine) is our member for a number of years as well as are her daughters. May God give them many more years of health and happiness.
Silver Anniversary was celebrated by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Babich. Mrs. Babich (Helen) is also our member for many years. They held an "Open House" after Mass for their many relatives and friends.
In a quiet manner, their silver anniversary was also observed by Mr. and Mrs. Felix Peraud. Mrs. Peraud is known as Catherine Stefanich whose mother, our member, died a few years ago. She also has other sisters who are our members. They have two daughters, one married and another attending St. Francis College. We wish them all many years of happiness.
Many of our members were confined at St. Joseph’s hospital recently. Mrs. Theersa Muhich, our sentinel, underwent a serious operation. So did Mrs. Louis Nasenbenni from Summit St. Mrs. Mary Kozar from N. Broadway underwent a few serious operations recently. Mrs. Mary Plankar, Mrs. Apolonia Ixjckner, Mrs. Barbara Kozjan and Mrs. Anna Bolte from N. Broadway also were patients in the hospital. May God grant them a speedy recovery.
Our member, Mrs. Bernice Metesh, became a mother recently to a fine boy. Our congratulations to the proud Parents Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Zobel and to grandparents whose grandma Catherine is also a member for a long time. Congratulations!

IN MEMORY OF A GENTLE LADY
When in 1939, the S.W.U. Convention took place in Chisholm, Minn., I was just a little girl, but the drill teams and colorful parades our teams formed in that city remain a vivid memory. We assembled many times as participants in various ceremonies — and
I	along with the cadets, for I was their mascot. Each team had a leader
—	as it turned out, those leaders formed the first Supreme Youth Board of our S.W.U.—and from Chicago, Mrs. Lillian Kozek was one of the 5 ladies chosen. Mrs. Kozek was then and for many years to come, very active and enthusiastic about all Zveza doings, especially at her home branch. She was the secretary of the
and to their daughter, Mildred, who graduated the Junior College with high honors and who received a two year scholarship of $1,000.00 from the Kiwanis Club. She is attending the University of 111. in pre-medic study. They also have another daughter Angela, who received a scholarship for Home Economics some time ago. Other children in this proud family are: Dr. Louis, who is practicing surgery and medicine in Peoria, Son John, graduated with honors the Lewis College and is now teaching in Lemont, one daughter, Sister Louis Paul, who is teaching the St. Francis Academy, daughter, Mary, and son, James, are students of Joliet Public High School and two other daughters are married. We are proud to have such a family in our midst, with children who are exceptionally talented. Mrs. Emma Planinšek is the sister of Mrs. Pauline Lukancich.
Mrs. Marie Prisland, our founder, celebrated her birthday on June the 21st. For that occasion I visited her home in Sheboygan to personally greet her. That evening I met her oldest daughter, Margaret, and her family whom I haven’t seen for a number of years. I also had the pleasure of meeting the officers of the branch who gathered to extend their best wishes to Mrs. Prisland. It was a very pleasant evening. Since this was the first birthday observed at home for Mrs. Prisland in three years since she spent the latter two in Slovenia, it was interesting to hear how her birthday was honored in her birth place in Slovenia. May God grant her many more years of perfect health and happiness for the good
branch, member of the Choral Club and officer of the bowling association and would have continued to be active today, had not that terrible accident in 1954 deprived her of vigor and health. I still remember her as she was 21 years ago — and cannot see any other face in my memory, except her smiling, happy one of years back.
When she was a young, active officer, Mrs. Kozek served her branch well. She took special care, that it grew in membership and spirit. Lillian was always a shining example of sisterly love. In the following years as a Supreme Officer, she was conscientious and industrious, always ready with ideas and willing hands.
In the August, 1954 issue of Zarja the report of her accident and paralyzing injuries ended with a prayer that God would grant her complete and quick recovery—but, God loved her too well and rather gave her life which would lead straight to heaven. We pray that her reward is great and that she will always remember us lovingly in heaven as we go on here on earth.

IN TRIBUTE Joliet, III. — The Midwest S. W. U. Bowling Association expresses deepest sorrow in the passing away of its founder and former officer, Lillian Kozek, whose death shocked the entire S. W. U. sports world.
Her memory is established by many deeds she rendered in the promotion cf the best interests of the Slovenian Women’s Union. During her tenure as secretary and officer of the Midwest S.W.U. Bowling Association — she introduced segments of the Woman’s International Bowling Congress.

SLOVENIAN YOUTH NAMED TO ANNAPOLIS
John Arthur Alich, Jr., son of Mr. •Mid Mrs. John A. Alich of Burlingame, Calif., San Mateo County, was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. to begin studies this month and preparation for his career as a naval officer. John received this appointment as a result of his highest score in final examinations given to 10 selected high school graduates in March. He is a graduate of Serra High School and attended All Soul’s Catholic School in San Francisco where his family resided until two years ago. His mother and dad are of Cleveland, Ohio and most of his close relatives still live there. His grandmother, Josephine Alich of 6722 Bonna Ave., Cleveland, O., is a member of Br. 25. He has two brothers, Jim and Tom and a sister, Cathy.
To the many who have extended heartiest wishes, we add ours, and wish him a lot of success in his chosen career. He was certainly made his family and all Slovenians very proud.
Russell James Bizily, son of Mr.
& Mrs. Stanley Bizily, 15929 Saranac Rd., in Collinwood was graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics Degree from Parks College of Aeronautical Technology of St. Louis University on July 2Gth, 1960. He majored in aeronautical administration. He was also active in the ROTC at college and received commission as a 2nd Lt. in the Reserves of the United States Air Force on July 2Cth, 1960.
He is also a member of the social fraternity, Alpha Pi Sigma and of the Student Council.
On August 5th, 1960, he left for Spence, Georgia as a cadet in the United States Air Force for flight training and to receive his wings.
He is a graduate of the 1956 class from Collinwood High School.
His brother Ronald Bizily graduated from the same college with honors in December 1959—and is now a member of the faculty at the college teaching electronics.
His mother Mrs. Rose Bizily belongs to branch no. 10, Cleveland, (Collinwood). Ohio. She is one of our top bowlers. Her sister, late Mrs. Pauline Mauser, was also an active member of S.W.U. Congratulations to the industrious family. May God guide cadet Russell James in all his endeavors!

An open house was held at their home Sunday, July 17th and many relatives and friends called to wish them well. Their four sons and four daughters were hosts for this gala affair. Mrs. Elizabeth Smolnikar, our president of #33, is one of their daughters. May God bless them and keep them happy and well for many more years together with their lovely family.
Members Mrs. Mary Evanovich and Mrs. Barbara Mrsich are both confined to the hospital for some time. Despite their lengthy illnesse«, they are still cheerful and happy to be remembered by their friends. May God bless them and restore good health very soon again. If there are any others ill at this time, unknown to me, may I extend all the wishes for speedy recovery from the members of our branch.

Mr. & Mrs. Anthony P. Yapel observed their Silver Wedding Anniversary on Sunday, June 26th, a week after their son Anthony was married to Miss Agnes Pavlich on June 18th. The newlyweds, Anthony and Agnes, joined the other Yapel children, Barbara and George in feting their parents at the surprise party which was held at their home with over 200 guests attending. The couple also received hundreds of cards and other congratulatory messages from friends who could not be present making it a truly memorable occasion.
The wedding of the young couple was held at the same church, as the senior Yapels, St. Martin’s in Tower, Minn. The bride is the daughter of Jacob Pavlich of Soudan. Her mother, the late Mrs Angela Pavlich, was a member of br. 31 until her death a few years ago. A large reception at which hundreds of friends gathered, completed the wedding day. The bride and groom now reside at Eagles Nest Lake while Anthony is studying at the graduate school of Chemistry at the Univ. of Minnesota. Best wishes to the Yapel family.

Our local parish of St. Martin’s at Tower-Soudan is now in uew construc-
tion activity, with a new church and rectory expected to be completed this fall. It will be a really modern structure and incorporate features making it convenient to those who walk as well as who drive. Also, it will provide seating capacity 400 persons and added facilities for all our parish doings. Our pastor, Fr. Golobich and chairman of the fund raising committee for the new church, George Nemanich were busy with the all-parish fund appeal for the purpose of meeting construction costs. We’re all very anxious to see the new building, which will replace old St. Martins, built in 1885 and representing of the oldest parishes in the diocese.

No. 46, St. Louis, Mo. — Our last meeting was not well attended; just the same few who always attend. Our next meeting will be in Sept. So we had a vacation in July and August.
My cousin who has been in Hawaii for the last three years was home here for a month’s visit. Eda Webb is member of no. 46 and will submit her new address as soon as she sends it to me. We had many a family gathering and enjoyed seeing them all a-gain as well as the new baby. 1 will have to try and sign her up as new juvenile member. Also Mary Louise who is my Godchild. They left on Aug. 8th for New London, Conn. where they will bo for the next three years. So we are all looking forward to visiting them in Conn. next year.
We have had lots of visitors here this summer. Mrs. Theresa Franko, had her daughter, husband and two grandchildren visiting her in July from Albany, New York. They had a nice visit here as our weather was good at the time, not too hot. They all looked very well. Jeanne had an accident and was recuperating; also her husband was doing fine after surgery. It was nice seeing them again.
Mr. Jacob Speck, husband of Mrs. Sophie Speck is in the hospital suffering from a fractured hip following a fall. He is in Missouri Pacific Hosp. in St. Louis. It would be nice if the members would send him a get well card. You know it’s not pleasant being in the hospital any time, let alone in the summer during our hot humid weather. So let’s all send him a card. It’s going on the third month that he is confined.
We had a bridal shower in July, th 10th to be exact for our Treasurer’s future daughter-in-law. She was really surprised and received many beautiful and useful electric appliances. We hope to get her as a new member in the near future.
We also had quite a gathering at my home on the 13th of July for a surprise party for my mother Mary Staker was 72 years old. She was surprised too, wondered how we could surprise her as she lived here with me. But we did. Thanks to every one who helped me put it over.
Our next meeting will be Sept. 4th. I’m afraid I’ll have to miss that one
as I will be out of town on vacation at that time. So hope to see everyone at next meeting in Oct.

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio — After a busy summer, it will feel good to start going to meetings again. So, please, mark the date on your calendar for the #50 meeting night, Sept. 19th at St. Vitus Club Rooms. On the sick list we have Rose Želodec who had quite a bit of trouble with her eye. Cecelia Žnidaršič, too, had to be hospitalized for two weeks and we wish both of our members good health in the future and hope to see them soon again at our meetings.

No. 57, Niles, Ohio — Our meeting for the month of August was very well attended with 24 members present. It was held outdoors at the home of Frances Stanec. The meeting was brief with interesting discussions brought up. It was nice to see one of our members with us, Justina Brauer, who resides in New Jersey. She is visiting her mother and father, Mr. & Mrs. Ignace Logar, Sr. After our meeting adjourned, a very delicious lunch was served by the following ladies: Frances Stanec, Liz Havaich and Jennie Logar.
Congratulations to Frank Logar, son of Viola and Ignace Logar, Jr., who has accepted the position as a music teacher in the Niles McKinley High School. He recently was discharged from the Army. He graduated from Youngstown Univ. in 1958.
Congratulations to Frank and Wilma Macek on the birth of a baby girl, Veronica Lynn, born July 12th.

Sunday, October 2, 1960 is the DAY OF DAYS for all the members and friends of S.W.U. in our States. It is our annual manifestation of true sisterly love and admiration for our great organization. To do justice to this Day, we should try our best to attend the festivities held in the Slovenian W. Home, 15335 Waterloo Road, Cleveland, Ohio. Mrs. Albina Novak, Supreme Secretary will be with us and the best way to show our hospitality to her and all other visitors, will be if we present a CLASS OF NEW MEMBERS and have a solemn introduction. If every branch in Ohio and Michigan enrolls two new members, we will have a large group which will make our hearts sing with happiness. The month of September has cooler days and that should give us comfortable time to see our friends and sign them up. OH IO-MICHIGAN DAY October 2nd will be great if we will work together and make it GREAT!

No. 68, Fairport Harbor, Ohio —
This report has to cover a couple of months because of vacations and other commitments.
During our May 15th meeting discussion was made for the Ohio State Convention which is to be held on Oct. 2, 1960 at the Slovenian Workingmen’s home at Waterloo Rd. in Cleveland and Mrs. John Mohorčič our president was elected to represent us. We know that she will do a good job and we send with her all of our best wishes and hopes that the convention will be a huge success.
New members were introduced to the members; they are: Mrs. Margaret Kapel, Mrs. Carol Satej and Mrs. Edith Hervatine. Welcome! We are very glad to have you join us.
A gift was presented to Mrs. John Mohorčič, our President, who was married in April, on behalf of all the members of the lodge. Lots of happiness is wished for her.
Refreshments were served by Mrs. John Mohorčič and Mrs. Angela Lunka.
Sunshine prize was won by Mrs. Mary Grzely.
Our .Time meeting was well attended.
Two proud grandmothers are to be congratulated. First of all is Mrs. William Ulle, the proud grandmother of
her first grandchild, a boy, born to her daughter Eugenia Keim; and also to Mrs. Matt Troha whose daughter Mrs. Molly Dill gave birth to a baby boy. Our heartiest congratulations to you both.
Refreshments were served. Our next meeting in July was an informal affair because it was our family picnic at Mrs. Mohorcic’s country home on July 17th. A very good time was had by all. A wiener roast was held and every brought some speciality of hers in the baked line and such good things were prepared!
Baiinca was played and I can see that some of the women are just as good as our men, and they made them work for every point.
Mr. Lawrence Bajc had just returned from Europe and a pleasant time was had listening to him tell all a-bout his trip.
Louis Bajc played his accordion and group singing was held. It was a very enjoyable afternoon and I know everyone had a very good time. It was such a perfect afternoon and time just flew. Our sincere thanks goes to Mr. & Mrs. John Mohorčič for letting us come to spend a very pleasant afternoon.

No. 72, Pullman, III. — Quite a number of the regulars were missing at our July meeting, due to vacations, out of town visitors, sickness, etc. After the meeting, Mrs. Bezlaj treated the group to birthday refreshments, it being her birthday this month. May you have many, many more happy birthdays!
Out of town members visiting here this month were Mrs. Andrich and Helen Brolick. It is always pleasant to hear of your visits here.
Our Mrs. Angela Arko gave us quite a surprise and jolt recently. We knew that she had not been well for a long time, but it came as a surprise that suddenly she was in the hospital and undergoing major surgery. However, she came out of it very, very well, and is now convalescing at honne. We are very happy that she is doing so well, and hope it won’t be long before she is completely well and attending our meetings again. We miss you, Angela, so get well soon!

No. 92, Crested Butte, Colo. — Our
meeting in June was held at the home of Miss Aurelia Welch — she and Helen Cobai were hostesses for the evening. A letter was read and discussed from Mary Tezak, representing one of our sister lodges. Mrs. Bill Starlka our member who lives in Colorado Springs, volunteered to S° to the Convention in Pueblo.
At this meeting, we were very happy to have our members, Mrs. Starlka
and Mrs. Martin Spritzer, Sr., as our guests.
Seven members were absent from our July meeting, which was held at the home of Miss Welch. Due to vacations, many of them were out of town, thus unable to attend. Hostesses were Josephine Krizmanich and Mrs. John Kapushion. In August, hostesses were Josephine Krizmanich and Mrs. Caroline Kochevar—It, too. was held at Miss Welch’s home. Guests that evening were Mrs. Martin Spritzer, Mrs. John Spritzer and Mrs. Rudy Kochevar. So nice to have you ladies—our guests are always welcome.
We have had very nice weather this summer — several times we actually had hot days and real good showers of rain. The nights, however, are rather cold and we have had heavy frost in the early mornings. Our town boasts a new Country Store, located on Main St. This is quite an attraction tor the youngsters as they can get a coke or ice cream at any time. Not too far from town and up toward Peanut Lake we have a new steak house. A large number our tourists have come to see our lovely mountains and to use the camping grounds. And, our polka dances have attracted many people who come just to listen to the music.
Mr. Robert Greenfield and family arrived from Germany and are visiting with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Greenfield. Mr. and Mrs. William Cobai and daughter arrived in Japan and write that they are enjoying their stay over there. While in town they were the guests of Bill's folks, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Cobai and grandfather Gregory Stajduhar.
The youngsters have but a short time before the school bell calls them back. Vacation time Is about over; our town will once again be quiet and rather lonely.

Chicago, III. — While some of us are still vacationing, just a little reminder there will be a meeting, Sept. 7th at 7:30 p.m. when we will celebrate our July, August and September birthdays and plan our fall program of events. Your contributions of bakery goods have always been outstanding — making our meetings wonderful treats. We hope the celebrants will try to attend.

Another girl, Diane, was added to the Markulin family. Dorothy and her husband are now the proud parents of Robert, Karen, Donna, Stephen and Diane. Mr. & Mrs. Richard Graf-rath were blessed with a baby boy, James Richard. That’s a double measure of happiness for the proud grandmother, Kate Markulin, grandma of all six. Mary Ashenbrenner has become a great grandmother since the birth of a baby girl, Janet Marie Ray. Best of luck to the families.

Not too long ago, it was announced that our member Rose Boemer’s husband, Adolph, 9632 Muskegon Ave., was selected the winner of the Chicago Daily Calumet "Millionaire Father” contest. The Boerners have three children: Donna Lee, Roger and Allen. 30 business firms showered many, many beautiful gifts on this wonderful couple. It was a fine mo-taent for you and your family, Rose, which I know you will never forget. All the good wishes in the world to both of you.
In our branch, there are numerous shut-ins who are at home. We have many hospital cases, too, varying as the weeks go by. Sometimes, they are on the critical list for days and days. Ill your charity, please remember all the sick and deceased of our branch in your daily prayers. See you at the next meeting. Mildred James, Pres.
HOUSEHOLD HINTS
Baked apples are extra delicious if you add a tablespoon of wine to the center of each apple as soon as apples are tender, then place them in the oven again. Serve either hot or cold.
Just as soon as a grease spot gets on a tablecloth, clothing, etc., sprinkle generously with talcum powder and leave for several hours. Shake off and the grease will go along with the powder.
Suede jackets may be cleaned with a piece of very fine sandpaper. This same method will clean suede shoes and bags.
To launder black garments so they will not look grey and “linty”, add half cup of vinegar to the rinse water.
Patio pillows will last much longer if you cover the pillow with oilcloth or plastic before putting on the outer covering. They can be left outside with no fear of moisture spoiling the pillow.
When making cookies, use the inside of the ice-cube tray to cut them out. This saves time and effort.
Requests for the recipe “Surprise Lemon Pie” have been coming in, so here it is:
SURPRISE LEMON PIE
1 — 9 In. baked pie crust (use any pie crust recipe)
1 — No. 2 can crushed pineapple (drain off juice)
1 — Package cooked lemon pie fill-
ing
2 — Egg whites beaten stiff with
2	tsp. sugar
After crust is bsiked, spread the crushed pineapple on the pie crust, and over this, spread % of the hot lemon filling. Then, fold the remaining V*, filling into the beaten egg whites and pour this mixture over the lemon filling. Sprinkle the top top with chopped nuts or coconut. Keep in a cool place until needed.
SALMON NEWBERG
3	tablespoons butter, 3 tablespoons flour, 1 cup hot milk, % teaspoon salt, Vi teaspoon dry mustard, 2 tablespoons sherry, % cup cream, A 1-* pound can salmon, flaked, 2 egg yolks, 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese.
In a saucepan melt butter and stir in flour. Gradually stir in the hot milk. Add salt, mustard, sherry and cream and cook, stirring, until sauce is smooth and thickened. Stir in salmon liquid from the can. Combine egg yolks with a little of the hot sauce and stir the eggs into the sauce. Cook over very low heat for 2 minutes; stirring. Stir in the cheese and flaked salmon. Keep hot over simmering water. Serve on toast. Serves 4.

Deželica Abhazija se nahaja ob obali Črnega morja. Meri komaj kakih 8 tisoč kvadratnih metrov. Legenda pravi, da ko je Bog delil ljudem zemljo, je Abhazca popolnoma pozabil. Užaljeni Abhazec je stopil k njemu in ga vprašal, kaj bo z njim. Bog ga je usmiljeno pogledal, se ozrl na zemljo in rekel: “Glej ta svet! Tu boš živel! Ta kraj je odločen zate!” Tako so se Abhazci nastanili tam, kjer žive še danes. Bog jim je določil res lep kos zemlje. Abhaziji daje morje milo podnebje. Kavkaško gorovje jo ščiti mrzlih vetrov, čisti zrak in sonce vsak dan daje kraju veliko privlačnost. Kar je najbolj znamenito je to, da tukaj živijo ljudje, ki so stari nad 90 let in so še vedno aktivni.
Starost teh prebivalcev je težko ugotoviti, ker je malo pisanih dokumentov. Ponekod starci prikrivajo svoja leta in se delajo mlajše, drugod spet starejše. Tako so, napri-mer, vprašali nekega moža, koliko je star. Odgovoril je, da 95 let. Šele ko so mu oponesli, da je njegova hči stara
81	let, se je vdal, da je res star 108 let, a je prosil, naj tega nikomur ne povedo.
Nedavno so v neki tamošnji vasici slavili rojstni dan Tlabgana Kecma, katerega 132-letnico rojstva so svečano praznovali. Dejansko so bili vsi vaščani njegovi potomci, ker je on bil ustanovitelj vasice. Imel je 5 sinov in 2 hčerki. Vnukov ima 67, pra-vnukov pa čez 100. Pred kratkim je istotam umrl Namsir Kiud, star 142 let. V Abhaziji danes živi 11 starcev, ki so stari nad 120 let, število ljudi med 90 in 100 leti se pa stalno veča.
Svoje zdravje in dolgo življenje Abhazci pripisujejo dejstvu, da se z ničemer ne presilijo. Ne pijejo preveč, ne jedo preveč, živijo mirno, urejeno življenje, delajo pa do svoje smrti. Poskusi mlajših sorodnikov, da bi starce odvrnili od dela, so brez uspeha. Mnogi so namreč mnenja, da b: takoj umrli, če bi prenehali delati. Starci imajo celo svoj pevski zbor, ki šteje 20 članov. Vsi so stari okrog 100 let.
Malokateri starec je pripravljen na smrt. Nasprotno, izražajo upanje, da bodo še dolgo živeli. Mamperi Bardhu, star 120 let, je znanstvenikom, ki so ga obiskali, pokazal trhle štore in rekel: "Vidite ostanke teh dreves, ki so bile najstarejše. Preživel sem jih! Kot vidite, sadim zdaj mlado drevje in ko boste čez 50 let spet prišli k meni, vam bom povedal, kaj se je medtem zgodilo.”

Naše živčevje je neverjetna umetna naprava, ki prekaša vsak še tako popoln človeški izum.
Če opazujemo zapleteni kup žic v kaki veliki telefonski centrali, ki omogoči, da dospe poziv v par minutah v naj-oddaljeni kraj naše zemlje, tedaj se temu pojavu čudimo in ga smatramo za čudež. Naši živci opravljajo še vse bolj zapletene načine obveščevanja v naših lastnih telesih.
Skozi milijarde celic našega živčnega sistema se prenašajo dan za dnem milijoni obvestil vsem organom, telesa ter uravnavajo utripanje srca, gibanje naših udov, dihanje pljuč. itd. Brez zvez, ki jih v našem organizmu tvori živčevje, bi naše telo bilo kup celic, nezmožno za skladno sodelovanje.
Pomislimo, kaj vse zmorejo čutni živci, s katerimi ugotavljamo kaj je vroče, kaj mrzlo; ali je jed slastna, ali godba igra lepo melodijo, če je pogled na kako stvar razveseljiv in tako dalje.
Jezik ima kakih 'A tisoč okuševalnih brbončic, ki so po živcih zvezane z možgani. Nihče še ni odkril, ravno kako te čutne celice delujejo, a prejeti impulzi gredo v možgane, ki razsodijo; krompir je neslan, oranža je kisla, pečenka je dobra, itd.
V ušesih imamo stotisoče slušalnih celic, ki se takoj vzburijo, ko jih zadenejo zvoki. Slišimo pa ne z ušesi, temveč z možgani, ki razsodijo.
V vsakem očesu je nameščenih drug nad drugim na milijone svetlobnih barvnih prejemnikov., ki prevajajo v možgane cele kope vidnih vtisov. Ljubko spomladansko pokrajino sicer gledamo z očmi, toda le z možgani se je moremo veseliti in biti nad njo očarani.
V koži je na široko razprežena mreža čutilnih prejemnikov. Če se dotakne kože vroč predmet, javi 30.000 toplotnih prejemnikov, da grozi nevarnost. Razen toplotnih, vsebuje koža isto število mrzlotnih prejemnikov. Kadar stopimo pod mrzlo prho, tedaj mrzlotni prejemniki poplavijo možgane z alarminimi vestmi, nakar se začne telo tresti, kožne arterije se razširijo, krvni obtok se pospeši, da nastane več toplote. V slučaju vročine, toplotni prejemniki opozore možgane, ki takoj odredijo milijone znojnih celic, da pričnejo izvajati hladilni znoj.
Kot vidimo so možgani centrala živčevja. Ta centrala se pa dosti ne briga za obvestila, ki pridejo od maloštevilnih prejemnikov, zato nam ni posebno prijetno, če si pritisnemo vročo iglo na kožo. Če pa to storimo z vročim likalnikom, tedaj zaženejo prejemniki vik in krik.
Poglavitna naloga živcev je, da vzbujajo in priganjajo mišice k delovanju. Živčne celice imajo posebne lastnosti, ki jih ločijo od drugih celic. Večina celic v našem telesu se lahko obnovi, živci se ne morejo. Naprimer, rana se zaceli; odstriženi lasje zopet zrastejo .istotako porezani nohti. Takega obnavljanja pri živcih ni. Rodimo se z enkratnim številom živcev in če se to število zmanjša, ne moremo proti tej izgubi ukreniti ničesar. Zato, pazimo na svoje živce in ne utrujajmo jih brez potrebe!

V zadnji vojni je neki ameriški general na vojaških manevrih naletel na dva vojaka, ki sta iz kuhinje nesla velik kotel. General zakliče:
“Hej, vidva! Počakajta! Hočem pokusiti vašo juho!”
“Ampak gospod general...” prične ugovarjati prvi vojak.
“Nobenega ugovora! Prinesite žlico,” ukaže general.
Ko vojak prinese	žlico, general pokusi	tekočino v	kotlu,
jo	hitro izpljuje in	se	zadere: “Kaj to	nazivljete	juho?
Kakšne kuharje pa imate?”
“Oprostite gospod general, saj sem vam hotel povedati, da to ni juha, temveč pomije,” pojasnjuje vojak.

Po deželski cesti	je	vozila limozina,	ki je nova	stala
7	tisoč dolarjev. Ko	je	ta luksusni avto	došel neko	staro
karo, ki je trudoma ropotala naprej, voznik limozino ustavi ter posmehljivo vpraša voznika starega avta, kaj pri njem tako ropoče.
Voznik starega avta: “A! Kaj ropoče, bi radi znali? Vidite, to je 6 tisoč petsto dolarjev v mojem žepu.”

Ljudje imajo dolg spomin za malenkostne osebne zadeve, kratek spomin pa, kadar se gre za velike hvaležnosti.
Vera slovenskega človeka je bila vedno trdno povezana s vsakdanjim življenjem. V tem ni bilo ne potvarjanja in ne narejenosti. Kar je bilo v srcu so pokazali na zunaj. Danes se je v tem, na žalost, veliko spremenilo. Težko boš danes dobil ljudi, ki bi pri angelovem zvonenju, bilo zjutraj, opoldne ali pa zvečer, počakali pri delu in odmolili angelovo češčenje. Še pred nedavnim časom je to bil reden pojav na deželi. Vera ljudi je bila živa. Ni jim bila obleka, ki jo menjajo po potrebi.
Kakor pa se je vera kazala v življenju človeka, tako je tudi njegov dom dihal krščanskega duha. Ko si vstopil v hišo, si lahko takoj opazil, da tukaj notri prebivajo krščanski ljudje. Na to te je opozoril kropivček z blagoslovljeno vodo, ki se je nahajal blizu vrat, rožni venec na zidu, svete in nabožne slike. Najbolj je pa seveda vzbudil tvojo pozornost križ v kotu. Pod njim je bil yripet prt s pobožnimi izreki. Bil je narejen iz domačega platna in izdelan doma. Obrobljen je bil z raznimi narodnimi okraski. Navadno je bila pod križem tudi oljnata lučka, ki je gorela noč in dan. Ta pojav v hišah s križem v kotu je bil tako pogosten, da so ga posplošili in ga imenovali enostavno: bogkov kot.
Bogkov kot je bil vedno na odličnem mestu v hiši. Vsi važnejši družinski dogodki so se vršili pred bogkovim kotom. Navadno je v tistem kotu stala tudi miza, okoli katere je družina sedala k jedi. Gospodar ali oče je navadno zasedel desno stran bogkovega kota. Od tam je vodil življenje družine z besedo in zgledom. Vsak obed so začeli in končali z molitvijo. Od tam je oče ali gospodar navadno delil duhovnega in telesnega kruha otrokom in poslom. Vse važnejše odločitve za delo in življenje so se odigrale prav pri bogkovem kotu.
Nikoli ni bilo treba opozarjati posebej na pomen bogkovega kota v družini. Samo po sebi je bilo razumljivo, da mora biti tam. Križ je znamenje našega odrešenja in mora
zato zavzemati najbolj važen prostor v hiši. Bil je in je še v mnogih hišah to, kar je oltar v cerkvi. Družina tam opravlja svoje melitve kakor, rožni venec in druge. Vse se je odigravalo pred bogkovim kotom veselje in žalost, trpljenje bolezni in preizkušnje, kakor tudi kazni in opomini, ki so jih morda posamezni člani družine potrebovali. Tam so tudi črpali moč, da so mogli služiti Bogu tako kot je delal rod za rodom že stoletja. Tam so se vzgajali zua-čajl, katerih dela občudujem« še danes. Pomembnost bogkovega kota ne bomo nikoli dovolj povdarili in ne čisto razumeli. Bil je življenje ljudi. Prinašal jim je srečo in notranje zadovoljstvo. Učil jih je vdano prenašati in sprejemati vse, kar jim je življenje prinašalo.
Moderni napredek in iznajdbe so napravile človeka nesrečnega, nezadovoljnega in predvsem nemirnega. Zmanjkalo je tiste odločnosti in trdnosti, ki je bila tako značilna za ljudi, ki so živeli pod vplivom bogkovega kota. Človek je zanemaril bogkov kot in začel misliti in verovati samo vase. V hišah si začel opazovati gole stene in kote. Da, še celo več, namesto svetih slik so se pojavile poganske ali celo take, ki rušijo krščanskega duha in krščansko moralo. Poganski duh je začel vladati v družini in z njim vsi pogubni vplivi, ki jih ta duh prinaša. V svet obrnjeni človek je zgubil smisel za onostranost in vero ter si s tem nakopal nezadovoljstvo in večno iskanje po sreči. Človek več ne pozna človeka in ne božje podobe v njem. Pod vplivom bogkovega kota, je človek bil bolj srečen pri vsem pomanjkanju kot pa je današnji človek z vsemi pridobitvami pa brez bogkovega kota.
Znamenje zveličanja bi moralo zopet najti pot v naše domove. Bogkov kot bi zopet moral biti središče družinskega življenja in ne bi bilo več toliko razporok, mladinskih zločinov in moralnega propadanja družbe. Kako človeka poživi, ko stopi v hišo in tam vidi, da je križ na vidnem mestu in da je bogkov kot še vedno središče, kjer se družina telesno in duhovno okrepčuje.
AMERIŠKI VETERANI POČASTILI DR. LESKOVARJA
Ameriški veterani podr. št. 10 Robert Grant so v soboto dne 18. junija priredili posebni večer v Chicagi, Illinois na čast rojaku dr. Ludwigu Leskovar. Večer se je vršil ob pogrnjenih mizah ob lepi udeležbi veteranov, močnega zastopstva naselbinskega sveta, slov. radijskega kluba in drugih društev. Urad čikaškega župana je zastopala Mrs. Youngs. Na odru dvorane je bila velika torta z napisom:
“Good luck Ludwig A. Leskovar”.
Odlikovanje mu je izročil Mr. Jack Wolf, prvi poveljnik veteranske organizacije za državo Illinois. V svojem govoru je povdaril Leskovarjeve zasluge kot ustanovitelja in predsednika naselbinskega sveta osrčja Chicago (Heart of Chicago Community Council) ter vse njegovo veliko delo za dobrobit, izboljšanje in napredek tega dela mesta.
Izjavil je, “da je Leskovar s svojim delovanjem koristil ne samo celotni naselbini, temveč je s svojimi pozivi preko radija in tiska pomagal pri izboljšanju vsega mesta
Chicaga”. Enako je povdaril, da je odlikovanec “vedno nudil pomoč in nasvet novim Amerikancem, ki so z njegovo pomočjo postali bolje poučeni državljani. Dr. Leskovar in njegova talentirana soproga Corine, ki vodita radijske oddaje za jugoslovanske narode Chicaga, i-grata važno vlogo pri vživljanju beguncev v svojo novo domovino Ameriko. Njuna delavnost v tem pogledu je narodna in mednarodna ter nudita visoko cenjeno službo naši deželi, ki pridobiva dobre nove državljane”.
Ob zaključku je Mr. Wolf čestital Leskovarju in dodal: “To odlikova-
nje ni samo v čast vam, vaši ženi in družini, ampak vsem Amerikancem slovenskega porekla ter naselbinskemu svetu, kateremu ste vi ugledni predsednik.”
Nato mu je izročil krasno plaketo “v hvaležnosti za izredne zasluge za naselbino.” Dr. Leskovar se je lepo zahvalil za podeljeno čast vsem veteranom, posebno še za lepe besede pod-poveljniku Illinois-a’ ter poveljniku podružnice Fred Decker in adjutantu Tedu J. Jen-drzejewski. Rekel je, da je posebno ponosen, da cenijo njegovo delo tisti, ki so največ doprinesli za domovino, saj so bili mnogi ranjeni in pohabljeni. Povdaril je tudi, da bo s skupnimi močmi možno še veliko storiti za bodočnost naselbine v osrčju Chicaga.
Rojaku ob tem lepem priznanju iskrene čestitke ter še veliko na-daljnih uspehov.
Naj še omenim, da je dr. Leskovar član in podpredsednik društva sv. Štefana št. 1, KSKJ in član društva “Zvon” št. 70, ABZ.

Orožnik bi ciganki vse potrdil, samo da jo pomiri: “Verjamem, da si nedolžna,” ji je hitel zatrjevati, dasi ni verjel, "samo jaz ti ne morem nič pomagati. Pomiri se. Morda se kdaj skaže. Le mirna bodi. Kmalu bomo izstopili. Kar pripravite se.”
Ciganka in pocestnica nista imeli vzeti kaj s sabo. Kmetica in krščenica sta. pa segli vsaka po svojo culico. Tudi Pavla si je pripravila svoj mali črni kovčeg in zaskrbelo jo je, če bo na kolodvoru kaj prida ljudi. Vedela je, da se bodo vsi zanimali za kaznjenke, ki jih spremljajo v Begunje, najbolj pa zanjo, gosposko oblečeno. Sama bi se prav tako. Sedaj bi ji bolj prav hodilo, čebi ne nosila klobuka, iz Gorice bi pa brez njega težko odšla neopaženo. Pa naj bo že kakor koli, saj je v teh krajih nihče ne pozna.
Vlak je obstal. Orožnik Krvina ji je prišepnil: “Gospa, kar za mano hodite. Ni treba, da bi vsi vedeli, kam greva.” Istočasno je drugi orožnik poklical pocestnico po pisanju in ji zapretil: “Ogrič! Uklenil te ne bom. To ti pa povem, če mi poizkusiš pobegniti, bom streljal za tabo.” Kaznjenka Ogrič se je orožniku popačila: "Mmm! Surovina!”
“In v taki druščini bom morala leta dolgo prebivati,” je zaskrblo Pavlo: "O Bog, o Bog!”
Izstopili so in z njimi vred še nekaj ljudi. Orožnik Krvina se je delal, kakor da spremlja ostale štiri kaznjenke in ga Pavla za njim: prav nič ne briga, dasi se ni mogel toliko potajiti, da bi se včasih vsaj s pol očesom ne ozrl po njej.
Na peronu se je Pavli odril in jo tudi z besedo pozdravil visok, postaven fant: “Dober dan, gospa!” Pavla mu je odzdravila, pa se ni mogla domisliti, kje je fanta že videla. Pa jo je sam spomnil, ko je bolj iz vljudnosti kakor pa zares vprašal: “Ste mar spet namenjeni v Bohinj?” Še preden mu je odgovorila, da ne, ga je že prepoznala. Čolnar je bil, ki ju je preteklo jesen, ko sta na njeno željo s Filipom obiskala slap Savice, peljal s čolnom, je pritrdil fant, je še prezgodaj, ko je v Bohinju še do kolena snega.
Pavla je stopila za Krvino. Slišala je pa še in tudi videla, kako je fantov spremljevalec, možak trdnih let, pokazal na kaznjenke in napol zasmehljivo rekel: “Te-le pa v 6grad ženejo. Nič prida se jim ne obeta. Je slaba paša tam. Večidel sam ričet.”
Pavli je stisnilo srce. Kaj, če se fant spreume, da tudi njo ženejo v 6grad. Besedo je slišala prvič v življenju, pa jo je koj razumela in je ne bo nikoli več pozabila.
Pavla je stopila na blatno cesto pred kolodvorom. Z visokih kozlov na kočijah jo je troje izvoščkov vabilo, naj se pelje. Vsi so se ji odkrivali, eden prav posebno globoko. Ta jo je tudi kar ogovoril: “Gospa! Ali danes spet peljemo na Bled?” Pavla ga je pogledala, odkimala in povesila glavo. Prav ta mož je bil pred leti vozil mamo in njo z Brezij na Bled. Kaj si bo vendar mislil. Pavla ni upala nikamor več pogledati. Kakor bi bila privezana na skupino kaznjenk, je napol miže sledila orožniku Krvini.
Na prihod novih kaznjenk je čakal pred postajo kaz-nilniški lovski voz. Par srednjih težkih vrancev je bilo vpreženih. Krvina je prvi sedel na voz tik za voznika. Drugi orožnik je razporedil svoje štiri varovanke. Ogrič je morala sesti tik njega. In ko se je že tudi drugi orožnik povzpel na voz, je Krvina namignil Pavli, naj prisede poleg voznika, ki je bil oblečen v kroj kaznilniških paznikov. Morebiti bi res utegnil kdo misliti, da ne spada h kaznjenkam in da gre morda po opravkih ali na obisk v Begunje, pa so jo iz uslužnosti povabili na graščinski voz.
Pa komaj. Pavla je čutila, da so oči vseh uprte \S.njo. Sama se je pa zagledala naravnost predse. Ni ji migotalo pred očmi, pa vendar ne bi znala povedati, kaj vidi. Pogled ji je nekako otopel.
Voznik je pognal. Trdo sta morala poprijeti konja po klancu navzgor. Oddahnila sta se šele, ko sta zavila okrog stoletne vaške lipe. Ovinke skozi vas sta prevozila še v korak, vštric cerkve sta pa kljub napeti poti že stekla.
Pavla se je spet ovedela. Ob robu ceste se je tajala skorja ledu. Umazana snežnica si je tu pa tam pregrizla pot skozi njo in je odtekala v obcestni jarek. Bregovi so bili že vsi kopni, v ravnini pa je še ležalo nekaj snega. Gore v ozadju, Dobrča, Begunjščica, Vrtača in Stol so bile še globoko ovite v sneg, Reber pod Svetim Petrom je bila pa kakor pregrnjena z rdečo preprogo, tako bohotno se je razcvetelo resje po njej.
Voz je drdral čez veliko c«sto in konji so prešli iz drnca v korak. Pred Pavlo je čimdalje bolj raslo mogočno poslopje, nekdanji sedež Lambergov, begunjska graščina, prezidana v kaznilnico. Če bi cerkve poleg nje ne poudarjal zvonik, bi kar zginila poleg nje. Na koncu vasi, dvignjeni na skalo, stisnjeni v sotesko, so se prikazovali razpadajoči stolpi starega gradu Kamna. Pavli se je zdelo kar samo po sebi umljivo, da je v tem vabljivem kotu slovenske zemlje zraslo nekaj vil.
Konji so privozili vštric graščinskega zidu. Čezenj je Pavla videla prostrane njive, v bregu pa sta se izprehajali dve usmiljenki v širokih belih pokrivalih. Ljudje, ki so jih srečavali ali prehitevali, so obsojali in se ozirali za novo došlimi kaznjenkami, najbolj za njo, gosposko oblečeno. Pavla je odmikala obraz radovedno izprašujočim pogledom. Pocestnico Ogrič pa ni bilo prav nič sram. Z neko žensko se je pozdravila kakor stara znanka in ji mimogrede povedala, norčevaje se sama iz sebe, da je spet prišla v prekrasne in zdrave Begunje za poldrugo leto na letovišče. Ko so se peljali mimo cerkve, se je kmetica pokrižala. O-pozorjena na Najsvetejše se je tudi Pavla s prsti desnice dotaknila čela, prsih in obeh ramen. Isto je za njo ponovila ciganka, samo dokaj bolj neokretno. Pavla se je spet spomnila na loški samostan, na neko spiritualovo pridigo, v kateri je gospod venomer ponavljal: “Pridite k meni vsi, ki ste trudni in obteženi.” Da, tako trudna in obtežena še nikoli ni bila.
Voz je zavil skozi široko odprta vrata, katera je pa mladostna usmiljenka takoj za njimi zaprla. Ciganka se je zdrznila. Nič ni prikrivala, kako bridko občuti, da je njene svobode konec. Z glasom otroka, ki je bil po pomoti bolj kaznovan, kakor bi celo v resnici zaslužil, je bolj vzdihnila kakor pa povedala: "Jaz sem nedolžna.” Pavla je začutila, da se je mlado cigansko dekle vsem zasmililo, pa naj je bilo krivo ali ne. Še celo debeluška ni ne z besedo ne s pogledom prisekala. Morda je tudi ona potihem in uporno zajokala za zgubljeno svobodo. Kako čutita kmetica in krščenica, pa Pavla ni mogla presoditi. Sama zfl.se je bila kar vesela, da so jo visoka železna vrata že vendar odmaknila zvedavim pogledom zijalastih ljudi.
Voz je obstal. Pavla se je začudila dolgemu drevoredu visokih divjih kostanjev, še dokaj bolj pa mogočni, stoletni lipi, ki še dandanes raste, dasi že močno opešana, sredi vnanjega dvorišča nekdanje graščine Lambergarjev. Pavla se je ozrla in opazila, da na vozu sedita samo še voznik in ona, ostale kaznjenke in oba orožnika pa stoje že na široki poti za vozom. Kar ustrašila se je, da bi je Krvina ne opomnil, naj nikdar ne mudi ostalih. Hitro se je podvizala na tla. Komaj se je njena noga dobro dotaknila belega peska, sta vranca že stekla naprej proti kostanjevemu drevoredu.
"Bom šla pa jaz naprej, ki že znam,” se je spet drzno oglasila Ogrič.
"No le,” je privolil njen orožnik. Bil je vesel, da je brez neprilike pripeljal svoje štiri varovanke za kaznilniški zid. Posebno Ogrič. Poznal jo je, da rada nagaja. Kdo se pa rad ruje vpričo ljudi s kaznjenkami. Če si še tako prizanesljiv, potegnejo ljudje vedno z žensko in nikoli ne z
orožnikom. Posebno moški. Kaj opazk je moral že preslišati. In to taka ženska ravno hoče. Potihem se pa smeji. Kaj pa ji moreš. Nič.
“Gospa,” je prišepnil Krvina Pavli: “Lahko zastanete. Ne spadamo skupaj.”
“Hvala, gospod Krvina. Ni treba več.” S črnim kovče-gom v roki je z ostalimi vred stopila skozi trdnjavsko mogočno obokovan vhod. Vrata pred njim so se kakor sama odpirala in tudi za njimi kakor sama zapirala. Enoroka vratarica, razmeroma še mlado dekle, ki pa ni bila nuna, je bila tako neznatna, da je kar nikjer nič ni bilo. Pavla si je pa predstavljala, da zagleda pri vhodu vsaj enega, do zob oboroženega mrkega stražarja. Pa o stražarjih ni bilo nikjer ne duha ne sluha. Obšla jo je skoraj vesela misel, da navsezadnje njena ječa le ne bo tako grozna, kakor se je bila bala.
Po notranjem dvorišču se je Pavla komaj utegnila ozreti. Dvoje kaznjenk v umazanorumenkastih rutah in vse prej kakor v okusno prikrojenih in barvno sestavljenih delavnih oblekah je prineslo v spremstvu belo oblečene nune od nekod sveženj umazanega perila. Pavlo je spreletelo. Živo se je zavedala, da bo morala še danes svojo, po sodobnem korju sešito promenadno obleko zamenjati s takimi cunjami, katere je pred njo nosila kdo ve katera ženska. Pa je že šla navzgor po stopnicah, klesanih iz zelenega kamna, proti močnim, mrežastim železnim vratom. Njih obleka se prav nič ni ujemala z bogato bleste-čebelo štukaturo na stropu. Grede, ko jih je sestra zaklepala, se je Pavla ozrla nazaj na notranji vhod v nekdanjo graščino in sedanjo žensko kaznilnico in videla, da na oboku stopnišča kakor v posmeh spremembam časov in življenskih prilik v treh, z zavito štukaturo poudarjenih kolobarjih, godejo vsak sam zase trije naslikani angelci svak na svoje, pa vsak na drugačno godalo.
Pavla se je bila zahip zamislila. Pa jo je nizki strop v pisarni, v katero je bila prišla, kakor bi jo privedla hladna roka, opomnil, da je sedaj kar najmanj prilično razmišljati o preteklih časih in o spremembah življenja. Kakor svojega poveljnika sta orožnika strumno pozdravila resno usmiljenko za pisalno mizo. Dasl je bilo zakurjeno, je Pavlo pričel stresati mraz.
Orožnika sta položila listine na mizo. Usmiljenka jih je začela pregledovati in vpisavati. Pogledala je novo-došle kaznjenke in najprej poklicala debeluško: "Josipina Ogrič.” Že vajena življenja v kaznilnici se je Ogrič naglo odzvala: “Tukaj.” V isti sapi pa je oporekala, da ni Josipina, ampak Zefka. Usmiljenka se za njen ugovor niti zmenila ni, orožnika sta se pa spogledala, si pokimala in se smejala. Iz daljnjih vprašanj in odgovorov je Pavla zvedela, da je Ogrič stara dva in trideset let, da je že tretjič
v	kaznilnici in da je zavoljo tatvine obsojena na poldrugo leto strogega zapora in potem še zavoljo vlačugarstva na tri leta prisilnega dela.
Izmed ostalih treh sopotnic ni bila nobena druga povratnica. Celo ciganka ni bila doslej še nikoli kaznovana. Kmetica se je pisala Johana Zemljak. Stara je bila šest in petdeset let. Porota jo je obsodila zaradi požiga iz maščevalnosti na štiri leta.
Napol gosposko dekle, Marija Nagode, je bila po poklicu sobarica. Utopila je svojega nezakonskega otroka. Prisodili so ji tri leta pokore.
Najbolj se je Pavla zanimala za ciganko Kati Bebela-rič. Stara je bila pet In dvajset let. Pa jim ni bila podobna. Bila je videti dokaj mlajša. Celo usmiljenka se ji je začudila. Obsojena je bila zaradi soudeležbe pri zverinskem umoru orožnika Hrastnika na dosmrtno ječo.
Zadnja je prišla na vrsto Pavla. Bila je izmed vseh najmlajša. Sokaznjenke, razen ciganke, so napeto prisluhnile, kaj je zagrešila. Niso se malo začudile, ko so zvedele, da bo morala Pavlina Andrejčič, rojena Gradišnik, žena doktorja Filipa Andrejčiča, zaradi ponarejanja podpisov na menicah prebiti v begunjski ženski kaznilnici sedem let Ogrič ji je očividno privoščila. Pavla se je že bala, da bo glasno rekla: “Prav je.”
Tiho, skoraj neslišno so se odprle stranske duri. Vstopila je nuna, kateri se je koj na obrazu poznalo, da je vajena ukazovati. Tik za njo je šla sestra zrelih let in močne postave. Orožnika sta udarila s petami skupaj in desnici sta jima zdrknili na puškino kopito. Ogrič pa se je globoko poklonila in glasno pozdravila: "Hvaljen bodi Jezus Kristus, častita sestra prednica.” Pavli se je zdelo, kakor bi bila pocestnica in tatica izrekla bogokletstvo. Pa se je spomnila dveh, treh sošolk iz samostana. Same zase so se pogovarjale o fantih in razposajenostih, nunam v obraz pa so svetohlinile, kakor bi tudi same hrepenele po tihih celicah. Zavedela se je, da bo v druščini, v katero jo je vrglo življenje, našla kaj malo odkritosrčnosti in dokaj prilizovanja in hinavščine.
Sestra prednica je orožnikoma potrdila, da sta kaznjenke v redu privedla v kaznilnico in ju je odslovila. Pavla se je nadejala, da se bo Krvina posebej poslovil od nje. Kakor v zadnji pozdrav sončni Goriški pa tudi v priznanje njego-
vi	obzirnosti mu je hotela podati roko, da si jo je mama nekoč ostro pokarala, da orožniki niso njej enaka druščina. Krvina pa je njeno kretnjo prezrl in bil samo še služben. Pavla se je čutila ponižano. Kar prav se ji je zdelo, da je orožnik že odšel in ni mogel videti rdečice, ki jo je oblila.
Sestra prednica je resno opomnila novodošle kaznjenke, naj se ravnajo po hišnem redu; čim bolj vzorno se bodo vedle, tem bolj gotovo jim bo nekaj kazni odpuščene. Zapomnijo naj si pa, da jim današnji dan še ne bo vštet in da pričnejo prestajati prisojeno jim kazen šele jutri, to je 1. marca 188G. leta.
“Posebno od vas, Andrejčič,” se je obrnila k Pavli, “ki ste inteligentna, pričakujem, da boste drugim za vzgled.” Pavla ni prezrla, da je prednica namenoma opustila naziv gospa. Pa saj je imela prav. Kaznjenke so si vse enake. Še dobro, da so ji pustili vsaj pisanje in da je niso po-zaznamovali kar s številko.
Prav posebno pa je opomnila še ciganko, naj bo redna in naj nikar ne obupuje. Bo že kdaj deležna pomilostitve in bo lahko, dasi do smrti obsojena, še dokaj let preživela v dobravah in ložah, ko je še mlada, pa če jo bo še mikalo neurejeno življenje: “Morebiti vas je prav milost božja privedla k nam, da —”
Prednica ni mogla dokončati. Ciganka Kati je dvignila roke kakor k molitvi, se vrgla pred njo in presunljivo kričala: “Gospa! Jaz sem nedolžna. Še zraven me ni bilo. Spustite me, gospa, dobra gospa.”
“Le potolaži se, otrok moj,” je skončala prednica pogovor, ukazala spremljajoči jo sestri Huberti, naj novodošle preobleče, in je odšla. Videlo se ji je, da ob krčeviti bolečini ciganke ni ostala ravnodušna, kakor je bila marsičesa vajena.
V	preoblačilnici je sestra Huberta najprej Pavli ukazala stopiti v majhno sobico, v kateri je ob skladu oblek že čakala srednje stara kaznjenka. Vedla se je, kakor se imajo navado obnašati babice. Sestra Huberta je velela Pavli, naj se sleče. Obotavljaje se je Pavla odložila klobuk in vrhnjo obleko. “No, še naprej,” je opomnila usmiljenka. Pavla se ni ganila. "Naj vas nikar ne bo sram. Predpis je predpis in same smo,” je priganjala sestra. Pavla je sezula čevlje in slekla nogavice in spet obstala. Naprej pa ni mogla in ni mogla. "Rebolj,” je namignila sestra čakajoči kaznjenki. Pavla je začutila tujo roko na svojem životu. Najraje bi se bila vdrla v tla. Pa ženska je bila vajena takega posla. Preden se je Pavla dobro zavedla, je bila že oblečena v trdo srajco. Vrhnjo obleko je spet sama pomagala oblačiti. “Še prepletli se bova bolj enostavno,” je prijazno in prav nič zasmehljivo rekla ženska Pavli: “Saj podložkov v laseh pri nas nič ne rabimo. Kdo nas pa vidi.”
Pokrito v belo ruto je spet druga sestra odvedla Pavlo v samotno celico. Pavla se je kar nekako oddahnila, ko je bila končno vendar spet sama.

Št. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. — Zelo važna seja za našo podružnico je prihodnja seja, ki bo 11. sept. v cerkveni dvorani. Odbornice iskreno vabijo, da se udeležite, katere ste le mogoče. Imamo več važnih stvari za urediti in obenem bomo obhajale 3 mesečni birthday party julij, avg., sept. Katere ste imele rojstne dneve v tem času ste posebno vabljene za udeležbo in za mali prigrizek v ta namen.
Nadalje prosimo, da bi se v resnici potrudile, katere ste prejele super tikce, da bi jih po možnosti poskusile razprodati. Na vse farane in prijatelje naše šole sv. Cirila in Metoda apeliramo, da bi se udeležili .e večerje 25. sept. v cerkveni dvorani. Ves dobiček je namenjen za opravo nove sestrske hiše, katera bo dograjena to jesen. Priprava za to večerjo je v izkušenih rokah. Članice naše podružnice bodo poskrbele, da bo vsak zadovoljen z jedilom in postrežbo.
Še enkrat se priporočamo za številen poset. da ne bo naš trud zastonj.

Št. 2, Chicago, III. — Prihodnja seja bo dne 8. sept. in slavile bomo rojstne dneve slavljenk avgusta in sept., ker zadnji mesec ni bilo seje. Podana bodo poročila o Zvezinem dnevu v Lemontu ln razpravljalo se bo o načrtih za naslednje mesece. Freds. A. Novak se je vrnila iz Slovenije in je obljubila, da bo poročala o svojem potovanju.
Bog je poklical dne 28. julija po zasluženo plačilo našo drago Mrs. Lillian Kozek, dolgo-letno gl. odbornico ter odbornico podr. do težke nesreče, ki jo je privezala na bolniško posteljo celih 6 let, kar je bilo združeno z nepopisnim trpljenjem, dokler jo smrt ni rešila. Preds. A. Novak je vodila molitev rožnega venca v pogrebni- kapeli ter se skupno z Mrs. Železnikar, gl. blag. in drugimi številnimi članicami od tukaj in drugod udeležila pogreba. Naj počiva v Bogu. Soprogu Stanley-u in sinovom, iskreno sožalje.

POKOJNI SESTRI LILLIAN KOZEK V BLAG SPOMIN Dne 27. julija nas je zelo pretresla novica o smrti sestre Lillian Kozek, čeravno je trpela 6 let v težki bolezni, prikljenjena na posteljo vsa ta dolga leta vsled poškodb, ki jih je dobila v avtomobilski nezgodi. Sestra Kozek je bila zvesta članica Zveze ter dolgo let vestna tajnica podr. št. Z, ustanoviteljica pevskega zbora in vsa leta odbornica športnega kluba. — Bila je zelo aktivna pri vseh prireditvah; za njo ni bilo nobeno delo pretežko za procvit organizacije. Ravno tako pri cerkvenih prireditvah je bila vedno med prvimi delavkami. Pogrešale smo jo od prvega dne njene težke nesreče, ravno tako sedaj, ko jo ni več med nami.
Draga sestra Lillian Kozek! V imenu Tvojih številnih prijateljic Ti kličemo: počivaj mirno na lepem prostoru, kamor Te je spremilo veliko število sorodnikov in prijateljev. Pogreba se je udeležila Mrs. Jose pine Racic, bivša glavna tajnica, ki ie prišla iz Clevelanda kakor tudi Josephine Sumic iz Jolieta, ki je s seboj pripeljale njene prijateljice.
Počivaj mirno draga Liilian! Naj Ti ljubi Bog podeli najlepši prostor v večnem kreljestvu.
Soprogu Stanley-u in sinovoma naše globoko sožalje. Sestro Kozek priporočam v molitev!

No. 7, Forest City, Pa. — Lepe pozdrave vsem članicam Ženske Zveze od blizu In daleč. Upam, da ste zdrave in zadovoljne in se fajn imate na počitnicah. Vse tiste žene, ki so obiskale znance na drugi strani morja—“Slovenija”, upam, ste se dobro imele in se vrnile zdrave nazaj domov zopet na delo, katerega nikdar ne manjka. Vse počaka in vse se nadomesti počasi.
Sožalje Sredinski družini, katero je zapustil brat Fred. Enako familiji Zadar nad izgubo matere Frances; in vsem, katere je nesreča obiskala.
Vsem bolnim voščimo ljubega zdravja. Pogrešamo jih na sejah in zabavah.
Vsi umrli naj v miru počivajo. Spominjajmo se jih v molitvah. Leta bežijo, je kasno, dajmo biti veseli, dokler smo na tem svetu, pripravljeni od dne
(lo dne, ker iie vemo kedaj bomo poklicani.
Zadnjo nedeljo 31. julija smo imele piknik na Mary Kotarem prostoru. Lep dan, dosti nas je bilo (51). Mogoče sem kakšno pozabila šteti. Vsega smo imele zadosti in lušno je bilo. Hvala Mrs. Kotar in familiji, ki so nam dali prostor—na lepem kraju. Če je kateri hotel biti moker od zunaj, ne samo od znotraj ie tudi lahko šel v vodo. Na preddan piknika je kazalo slabo, toda na dan piknika je bilo lepo vreme in smo se fajn imele. Hvala tudi vsem, ki so pomagale, darovale, kuhale; posebno Agnes Racuba, ki nam je naredila in opekla pieroge. '—Drugič bo piknik pri Kamenovih. Bomo sporočile datum na seji drugo nedeljo.
Vsem članicam, ki praznujete rojstni dan ali god v sept. vse najboljše. Želimo vam, da bi še dočakale mnogo let.
Ali ste kaj novih članic pridobile? Potrudite se in povabite kakšno ter jo pripeljite na seje. Sama se ne bo nobena ponujala; morate vabiti.

Št. 10, Collinwood, o. — Najprej vabim že sedaj vse članice, da se gotovo udeležite prihodnje mesečne seje, katera se bo vršila 13. sept. Pričetek seje ob 7 uri v Slov. domu na Holmes Ave. Po par mesecev počitka bomo vendar lahko kaj koristnega ukrenile v korist naše podr. in celotne S.Ž.Z. Nadalje priporočam vsem članicam, da pridno prodajate listke za katere se bo dobilo prav lepe dobitke. Listki bodo vzdignjeni dne 2. oktobra na State Convention, ki se bo vršila v delavskem domu na Waterloo. In tudi to vam priporočam, da se udeležite tega skupnega sestanka, da se tam bolj medsebojno sporazumemo in skupno ukrenemo v korist celotne Zveze. Udeležite se torej v velikem številu; tudi tiste, ki nikdar ne pridete zraven. Potruditi se in pridite, da boste videle kaj se dela pri Zvezi. Naše glavne odbornice so vse iwvrstiie govornice in jih je veselo poslušati. In: se vse trudijo, da držijo vse v najlepšem redu.
Odkar ne zborujemo smo zopet izgubile 2 članici in sicer Elizabeth Novak in Frances Klun v starosti 86 let..

V drugi vrsti: Urednica Zarje pozdravlja udeležence na popoldanskem zborovanju in programu. Mr. Joseph Gomilar in sin Ronny s harmonikami sta skrbela za veselo godbo. Mrs. J. Železnikar, gl blag. in Mrs. C. Leskoyar, urednica s cvetjem, ki sta ga položili na grob pok. duh. svetovalca p. Aleksandra.
V tretji vrsti: skupina slovenskih plesalcev radijskega kluba iz Chicaga v narodnih nošah po lepo predvajanem narodnem plesu na pop. programu. Pevke pevskega kluba št. 2 med krasno izvajanim petjem med sv. mašo pri lurškl votlini. Na harmonij jih spremlja A. Fishinger. Članice na tej sliki so bile tudi pridne kuharice in nekatere so stregle na mize. Spodnja vrsta kaže del udeležencev meti sv. mašo dopoldne in nato pri popoldanskem programu.
Slike je posnel g. p. Fortunat, urednik Ave Marija, za kar mu naj bo na tem mestu izrečena iskrena zalrvala.
Bila je mama naše dobre in napredne članice Jennie Batich pri kateri je zadnjih par let živela. Ona ji je stregla z veliko skrbjo in ljubeznijo in ji s tem lajšala trpljenje, da je sirota laž.ie prenašala svoj križ. Njen pogreb je pokazal kako so jo sosedje in znanci spoštovali. Moje sožalje vsem ostalim sorodnikom in njeni duši pa večni mir in pokoj

ob 13 obletnici smrti Bila je ustanovna članica št. 14, Euclid, Ohio
Št. 14, Euclid, Ohio — Poročilo seje 2 avgusta. Ta seja je bila menda najkrajša v tem letu. Udeležba je bila bolj slaba. Seveda jih je dosti odpotovalo na počitnice. Med njimi je tudi Mary Iskra, ki se je podala v sončno Florido z možem. Želimo jima srečno pot in povratek. Spomnila se nas je z lepimi karticami.
Tudi Mary in Jože Stražišar se sem in tja oglasita, ko potujeta po Jugoslaviji. Sliši se, da se zabavata med Bvojci, posebno Mary, ki Ima še živo
82	letno mater. Ravno zadnji teden je pisala kako pšenico žanje. Najbrž bo tudi poskusila kako se še mlati.
Predsednica Mali in Pavla Cesar sta dobili vsaka po eno novo članico, ki bosta sprejeti na prihodnji seji.
Tilceti ali knjižice skupnih društev se prav dobro prodajajo.
Mrs. Gerčnianova mama so zopet zboleli. Želimo, da bi jim ljubi Bog še podaljšal življenje, ker so tako dobra in vneta članica za društvo in nam vedno kaj koristnega povedo. Tudi hčerka Frances se ni mogla udeležiti te seje zaradi bolezni svoje mame. Predsednica Mali je molila ob koncu seje za zdravje mame Gerčman in za vse druge bolne članice.

Ker smo v mesecu maju prekinile s sejami čez poletje, se s tem potom naznanja, da bo prihodnja seja 14. septembra ob pol osmih zvečer v navadnih prostorih.
Vesele smo naše nove članice Viktorije Speh, katero je pridobila naša predsednica Frances Lindič. Naše globoko sožalje izrekamo družinam Anna Yakič in Jenie Zupančič nad izgubo soprogov in očetov, katera sta pretekli mesec mirno v Gospodu zaspala.
Hudo bolana je bila sestra Josephi-na Gustinčič, kateri se zdravje počasi vrača. Mrs. Papež iz Union Ave., ki sedaj živi pri hčeri se še vedno nahaja v bolnem stanju. Tudi naša preds. F. Lindič se je nahajala za en teden v bolnici. Sedaj pa že zopet izgleda kot 20-letno dekle.
Vsem bolnim želimo, da bi se jim zdravje kmalu vrnilo in da bi kmalu prišle zopet med nas.
Prisrčno se zahvalim vsem, katere ste mi poslale čestitke in voščilne kartice za moj rojstni dan.

Št. 17, West Allis, Wis. — Poletje je za nami. Komaj se zavedamo, da smo imeli par toplih tednov, a že prihaja hladna jesen in konec je lepih cvetlic. Počitnice so pri kraju. Upam, da sle se dobro zabavale in srečno vrnile, posebno tiste, ki ste bile v stari domovini.
Z mesecem septembrom se začno zopet naše redne seje po 3-mesečnem presledku. Upamo, da se boste udeležile v polnem številu, ker moramo rešiti dosti važnih stvari. Seja bo 18. septembra, to je 3. nedelja v mesecu, v navadnih prostorih spodnje cerkvene dvorane. Članice želim tudi opozoriti na kartno zabavo, ki se bo vršila zadnjo nedeljo meseca oktobra to Je dne 30. okt. zvečer v spodnji cerkveni dvorani. Želela bi, da bi vsaka kaj darovala, ker ta dobiček gre v društveno blagajno; saj veste, da so stroški vsak mesec, priredimo pa samo eno kartno zabavo v letu. Darujte vsaka po svoji moči, kajti s tem olajšamo
naši tajnici delo in skrbi. Udeležite se gotovo in pripeljite svoje prijatelje. Dobitki bodo lepi!
Naj omenim, da je Mrs. Tereza Bo-zich prišla iz Calif, na obisk k svoji hčerki Mrs. Mary Otovič in sinu Franku. Ona se dobro počuti v sončni Calif. Lepo se ji zahvalimo, ker nas je povabila za odhodnico na sestanek k svoji hčerki. Bile smo dobro pogoščene z okusnimi krofi in drugimi dobrotami. Prav lepo smo se zabavale do pozne ure zvečer. Še enkrat prav prisrčna hvala za tvoj trud, saj nas je bilo precejšnje število. Naj tl Bog nakloni mnogo sreče in veselja.
Tudi Mrs. Parkel, (prej Bizjak) je bila na počitnicah pri svojih hčerkah. Ona živi tudi v Calif. Prav žal. mi je, da nismo imele več časa, da bi se malo pogovorile.
Mr. in Mrs. Gradisher sta prišla iz Eveleth, Minn. k hčerki in sinu ter obiskala tudi svoje prijatelje.
Bolane so članice, Mrs. Julia Hrovat, Mrs. Ana Vesel in Mrs. Elizabeth Banko. Obiskujte bolne članice in jim krajšajte ure bolezni.

Jaz sem že čez 20 let predsednica in vedno skušam biti aktivna, toda ni prav, da se zanašate samo name in na tajnico, ker napredek imajo pri tistih podružnic, kjer se članica zanimajo za seje. Upam, da boste odslej se udeleževale sej, drugače ne vem, kako bo šlo pri na! Na svidenje na seji! —

Št. 20, Joliet, III. — Posebni poročni blagoslov sv. očeta Janeza XXIII je bil podeljen naši članici Miss Elaine Troppe in Kapitanu Harold Allan Fleming v cerkvi Sv. Jožefa dne 23. julija pri 11 uri sv. maši, katero je daroval župnik Monsignor M. J. Butala.
Elaine Troppe je iz znane Troppe družine na N. Broadway street, in ženin je pa sin Mrs. Joseph Fleming iz New Yorka ter sin pokojnega Mr. Joseph Fleming. (Slika na st. 186.)
Blaine Troppe je imela štiri družice in štiri tovariše ter nečaka in nečakinjo za cvetlice in prstan nosilko.
Po poročnih obredih so imeli zajtrk in kosilo na “White Fence farm”, nato pa veliko ohcet in sprejem gostov v farni dvorani Sv. Jožefa.
Elaine je dobro in poznano dekle naše fare, saj je bila poročnica naših starejših kadetk več let in tudi je poučevala mlajši krožek. Bila je tudi več let predsednica Družbe Matere Božje. Elaine se je mnogokrat udeležila raznih aktivnosti podružnice in pa
Zadnji klic in vabilo na Minn. Zvezin dan in drž. konvencijo, 11. septembra
Št. 19, Eveleth, Minn. — Drage sosestre vseh minnesotskih podružnic! Ko vas bo ta Zarja obiskala, bo samo še nekaj dni do našega važnega Zvezinega dne v Eveleth, Minn. v nedeljo dne 11. sept. Ponovno vas lepo prosim, da bi se ga udeležile v velikem številu, ker to je naš sestrski dan, da pridemo skupaj kakor rodne sestre in se razveselimo v domači družbi vsaj enkrat na leto. Podroben program je objavljen v angleškem delu Zarje v dopisu M. Brank. Zbiranje ob 10 uri dop. pred mestnim auditorium. Kava in okusno slov. pecivo od 9 ure naprej. V procesiji bomo odšle v cerkev k sv. maži ob 10:30, kjer bomo slišale prelepo slov. petje. Po maši bo kratko zborovanje in od 1 uri pop. bo banket z lepim programom. Naš slavni gost bo Corinne Leskovar, ured. Zarje.
Opozarjam vse, da si pravočasno rezervirajo tikete za banket, da bo vse v redu pripravljeno. Tikete dobite pri Angeli Sterle in hitro sezite po njih, da bomo vedeli za koliko oseb pripraviti. Torej požurtte se in lahko ste prepričane, da ne bo nobeni žal, ki se bo udeležila tega našega velikega slavja. Skušale bomo ustreči vsem, kar bo v naši moči, da boste imele nepozabni dan. krožkov pred leti in bila vedno voljna pomagati.
Začasno bosta Kapitan, k je v armadi in nova Mrs. Fleming nastanjena v Pasedena, Calif. Tem potom želimo vsi mlademu paru mnogo sreče in božjega blagoslova v novem življenju, da bi ju Bog blagoslovil z zdravjem in srečo.
Družina Edward Ancel se je te dni vrnila z dvo-tedenskih počitnic v Mc-Cory, Arkansas, ki je 90 milj od Little Rock.
S počitnic so se vrnile tudi Mrs. John (Bertha) Kennick in hčerka Joan, kateri sta obiskali razne kraje po Califomiji in se tudi ustavili v Disneyland, nazaj gredoč pa v Las Vegas.
Članice, ki so se nahajale na operaciji in bile več časa v bolnišnici so se vrnile domov in te so: Mrs. Louise Nasenbenni, po sedmih tednih v bolnišnici. Mrs. Theresa Muhich naša re-diteljica, Mrs. Mayme Fedo, Mrs. Uršula Ambrose. Na domu se je nahajala bolna Mrs. Anna Fandak med tem časom ko se je pa njen soprog Anthony nahajal v bolnišnici več tednov. Želimo vsem omenjenim in drugim za katere ne vemo, da so tudi bolne, da čimprej za stalno okrevajo.
Naše sožalje članicam naše podr., katere so izgubile svoje drage v družini. Mrs. Elizabeth Kastelic iz Vine st., ki je izgubila mater Mrs. Thereso Zaletel 95 let staro in katera je bila najstarejša faranka v fari, doma iz Trebnjega na Dolenjskem. Zapušča tudi dva sinova in več vnukov ter pra-vnukov. — Mrs. Barbara Dragovan iz Cora street je izgubila soproga starega 81 let, kateri je bil zadnji dve leti slep. Umrl je v bolnišnici, medtem ko je bolehal več let doma. Pokojni zapušča tudi tri hčerke in štiri sinove. Pokojni je bil doma iz Metliške fare in dobro poznan stari faran. Zapušča tudi več vnukov in vnukinj.
Nagle smrti je umrl tudi Mr. Clarence J. Stukel iz Huchins street, v
starosti 62 let. Tu je živel vse življenje in praznoval 40 letnico poroke 10. julija. Lastoval je West Town Food and Liquor store. Bil je soprog članice Anne, rojena Horwath. Zapušča tudi sina, advokata, sestro Agnes Koerber (ki je tudi članica) in več drugih sorodnikov.
Po daljši bolezni je umrl tudi Mr. John Suhodolc v starosti G4 let. Bil je rojen v Prežgaje pri Litiji ter tu živel mnogo let. Imel je svoj dom na Clement Street. Poleg soproge Catherine, pok. zapušča tudi eno hčerko in tri sinove. En sin je pa padel v drugi svetovni vojni. Zapušča tudi vnuke in vnukinje.
Vsi omenjeni so bili člani raznih or ganizacij ter bili pokopani iz farne cerkve Sv. Jožefa na farno pokopališče. Naj v miru počivajo. Vsem preostalim sorodnikom pa naše sožalje.
Naš ženski odsek American Legion st. 1080 je imel Instalacijo odbora v katerem je tudi nekaj naših članic. Zaprisežene so bile: Mrs. Edward (Olga) Ancel, predsednica za drugi termin, Mrs. John (Dorothy) Mahan, (naša prejšnja kapitanka kadetk) tajnica, in Mrs. Joseph (Barbara) Koci-uba za Chaplain. Zaprisega se je vršila v domu American Legionarjev post 1080 na N. Hickory street. Molitvene obrede je opravil Monsignor M. J. Butala. Ženski odsek je bil ustanovljen junija J948 in ima mnogo zaslug pri dobrodelnosti za veterane pohabljencev, otroške aktivnosti In drugih važnih projektov v lokalnem in mestnem krogu. Naše čestitke marljivim članicam in odbornicam sekcije 1080 z željo, da bi imele nadaljne uspehe za “Boga in Deželo”
Po treh mesecih počitnic se bo zopet seja vršila v starih prostorih v Ferdinand dvorani in to tretjo nedeljo v mesecu septembru. Članice ne pozabite datuma 18 sept. in pridite v velikem številu da obnovimo naše prijateljstvo, kajti v treh mesecih smo se kar nekako poizgubile vsaka na svoje mesto. Sedaj pa le pridimo sku-
paj, da bomo obujale spomine preteklih mesecev lepih poletnih dnevov.
Poročne obrede je vršil Monsignor M. J. Butala za Robert Terlep in Miss Stanislaus v farni cerkvi. Robert Terlep je sin naše članice Mrs. Mary Terlep In Frank Terlep iz Oakland Ave. Ohcet so imeli v farnem parku ob navzočnosti več sto ljudi. Naše čestitke mlademu paru z željo, da bi bila vsa leta zdrava in srečna!

Št. 37, Greaney, Minn. — 4. julija sta praznovala Mr. in Mrs. Frank in Mary Nosie GO letnico zakona v krogu svojih otrok in družine, ki so jima priredili to pomembno proslavo.
Mr. & Mrs. Frank Nosie slavljenca biserne poroke
Mr. in Mrs. Nosie sta se poročila na Biwabilc, Minn. in po nekoliko letih sta se naselila na Greaney na farmo, kjer sta se bavila s kmetijstvom in živinorejo. Zadnja leta sta opustila težka dela, a živita še zmerom na farmi in opravljata le vrt in cvetlice, ker Mrs. Nosie ljubi lepe svetlice. Vzredila sta osem otrok, ki so vsi poročeni.
Mrs. Mary Nos-ie je čla. podr. 37, v Greaney mnogo let in se je zmiraj rada udeleževala sej in kadar smo imele prireditve je vedno rada pomagala. Za ta pomembni dan 60 letnice zakona so jima prišli mnogi čestitat in voščit vso srečo in zdravje še na mnogo let. Prišli so žlahta in prijatelji iz oddaljenih mest, da so počastili slavljenca na ta pomemben dan iz Biwabik, Virginia, Ely, Hibbing, Chisholm In Cook, Minn. in tudi še iz drugih mest kot Clevelanda in drž. Wisconsin.	,
Mr. in Mrs. Frank Nosie imata veliko družino in grandchildren in mnogo prijateljev. Bog vaju živi še na mnoga, leta v zdravju in sreči.

—	Sporočam žalostno vest, da se je smrtno ponesrečil Eddi Zalar, soprog sestre Ane Zalar. Zapustil je ženo, sina, dve hčeri, brata ter štiri sestre: Jennie Dzwich, Angela Greve, Frfeda Bruemer in Josephine McDonald: mati je po v bolnišnici resno bolna. Naj počiva v miru božjim!
Umrla je tudi naša ustanovna članica ter dolgo let naša predsednica in večkrat delegatka sestra Mary Hosta. Zapustila je soproga Antona, hčeri: Mary Ann, Ana Hanchette in Irene; sinove Anton, Frank, John, Louis, Martin, Joseph, Albert in Raymonda ter sestro M. Golob. Bila je zvesta društvenica ter pomagala, kjerkoli je bilo treba, kakor tudi pri svoji cerkvi in družino je vzgojila vzorno ter ugledno. Naj ji bo ljubi Bog dober plačnik. Preostalim sorodnikom izrekamo globoko sožalje.

Št. 30, Aurora, III. — Nebo nam spričuje in svet oznanuje — Da prišla je zala, slikovita jesen.
Tukaj imam časopis “Lombardian”, katerega mi je sin prinesel iz Lombard, Ul., v katerem vidim na prvi strani z velikimi črkami pisano: Lombard Hails Visitors. Pod tem naslovom pa lepa velika slika na kateri je pet Jugoslovanov (4 moški in 1 ženska) ; županova žena podaja roko in tako spejema jugoslovansko delegacijo. V začetku februarja je prišla ta delegacija arhitektov in inženirjev v Ameriko, da vidi in študira stanovanjske hiše, ki, kakor so rekli, se postavljajo tukaj veliko hitreje kakor v Jugoslaviji. Zelo jih zanima kanalizacija in toplota z vročo vodo v hiši. Lombard je edino malo mesto, kjer so se ustavili in Lombard jih je v resnici prijateljsko sprejel ter jim pokazal vse kolikor je bilo mogoče. Seveda so se zraven tega ustavili v New York-u, Chicagi, Milwaukee in drugod. Dasi-ravno ni Slovencev v Lombard (samo 2 družini sta mi znani) so bili vsak dan vabljeni na prireditve njim v čast. Seveda prvo kosilo so imeli pri Slovencu in časopis piše ,da so obedovali “flancate,, ali kot smo rekli "pohanje”. Papir pa pravi “fried cookies” in potico (similar štrudel). Kdo je pa to pripravil pa mi ni znano. Zelo se jim dopade v Ameriki, pa tudi list piše zelo lepo o njih, ko jim je več kot eno stran posvetil. Zanimivo je pa, da je bila vodja delegacije ženska Miss Dobrila T. Ivanovič. Vprašali so jih o vseh mogočih stvareh o Jugoslaviji, še celo to, odkod dobivajo modo za ženske obleke, pa je rekla Miss Ivanovič, da iz Francije, Italije in tudi iz Amerike, le škoda, da pride iz Amerike bolj pozno.

učiteljica. Ko je šla k staršem v Iowa za teden dni, je vzela tudi fantka s seboj. Seveda na farmi je bilo za njega vse novo in tako je bil otrok nad vse srečen in vesel. Posebno je bil vesel živine oziroma krav, in kot mi je snaha pisala, je šel vsako jutro od enega hleva do drugega povedat dobro jutro kravam. Ko je prišel domov sem ga vprašala kaj so krave odgovorile, ko jim je voščil dobro jutro, pa je rekel: so rekle samo: mu, mu, mu.
Pri nas imamo ženo, ki je že 4 leta po vrsti stara 65 let. I wish, da bi jaz znala tako lepo šteti. Ha, ha!

Št. 32, Euclid, O. — Ko boste to brale, bo že poletje za nami in upamo, da se bodo tudi naše izletnice srečno vrnile z lepimi spomini. Hvala vsem, ki so nam poelale pozdrave s potovanja.
Smrt se je zopet oglasila pri naši podr. V juliju je po par dnevni bolezni umrla Phyllis Pisano. Bila je še mlada in je zapustila moža in tri mladoletne otroke. V začetku avgusta je pa po dolgi bolezni umrla Mary Jakomin, ki je zapustila moža, poročeno hčer in dva sinova. Naj jim bo Bog milostljiv lil preostalim naše globoko sožalje.
V začetku avg. je bila operirana Rose Brezec in se ji zdravje počasi vrača. Bog ji daj, kakor vsem bolnim ljubega zdravja.
Tony Gregcre sin od naše blagajničarke Molly, je pa 31. avg. graduiral iz Miami University. Oxford, Ohio .odkoder bo šel za učitelja. Naše čestitke.
V juliju in avgustu ni bilo seje, zato ste prošene, da se v čim večjem številu udeležite prihodnjih sej. V oktobru bomo praznovale 31 obletnico obstanka, zato ste posebno vabljene, da pridete. In najlepše bi obhajale, če bi pripeljate kaj novih, da se nadomestijo umrle, in pa da bomo bolj močne v članstvu.
2. oktobra bodo pa naše ohijske podružnice skupno obhajale z banketom v Delavskem domu na Waterloo, Colinwood.
Odbor ima vstopnice v rokah; sezite po njih, da bo lepši uspeh in tudi sreča bo tam, zato tudi po listkih pridno sezite.
12. avg. se je mož od sosestre Mary Kalin, Louis, tako ponesrečil pri padcu ko je barval hišo, da je umrl. Naše globoko sožalje njej, sinu, ki je v službi strica Sama, in hčerki. Naj v miru počiva in Bog mu bodi dober plačnik.

Št. 33, Duluth, Minnesota — Zelo rada berem dopise v Zarji, toda težje se spravim k pisanju. Delo in bolezen v hiši. Moj mož je še vedno bolan, imel je pet operacij v treh letih. Na Ely mi ie pa umrla teta in stric v Visoki starosti in tudi botra mojih treli sinov Mrs. Sustarslc. Bog daj vsem mir božji.
Lepo se zahvalim Mr. in Mrs. Louis Kravs, ki sta mi poslala lepe karte iz obiska Slovenije. Enako hvala Mr. Molnaric za pismo iz starega kraja in Mrs. Pachak iz Col., ki piše tako lepe dopise. Minulo je že 8 let, odkar smo bili v njeni hiši ter smo potem obiskali tudi Mr. in Mrs. Jeršin.
Naša članica Mrs. Mrsich je zalo bolana in tudi Mrs. Ivanovič. Bog jima daj zdravja.

Št. 40, Loraiin, Ohio — Na seji meseca julija smo sklenile, da se udeležimo državne konvencije in banketa, ki se vršita 2. oktobra v delavskem domu na Waterloo’ Rd., Cleveland, O.
Če se bo priglasilo zadostno število članic, bomo naročile bus, in to bo za vsako članico prosta vožnja, tja in nazaj.
V	ta namen so se članice poslužile knjižic, ki nam jih je poslala Antonia Tanko, državna preds. vseh obijskih podružnic.
Procente, katere bomo dobile bomo s tem plačale za bus. Rezervirajte si sedež na busu za nedeljo, 2. oktobra. Pokličite uradnice Frances Bresak, Mary Pavlovčič ali pa Angelo Kozjan najkasneje do 20. septembra.

Dobrodošle, kličemo našim novim članicam: Mary Ferlič, Frances Krumpak in Catherine Evanish, kaiere je nagovorila k pristopu Angela Kozjan. Frances Brezak pa je vpisala svojo vnukinjo Ann F Bresak.
Vsem naših članicam, ki so ali bodo obhajale svoje rojstne dneve v mesecu septembru, kličemo Happy Birthday, posebno pa še sestri Mary Plečnik, k' bo obhajala svoj 80-letni rojstni dan dne 8. septembra. Ljubi Bog vas ohrani še na mnoga leta. Sestra Plečnik ne zamudi nobene seje najsi bo poleti ali pozimi.
To poletje sta nas obiskala iz Calif. Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Evanish st. Mary Evanish je bila naša članica mnogo let, ko se je preselila v Calif., je pa prestopila k št. 100, S.Ž.Z.
Tukaj je slika štirih rodov. Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Evanish st., sedita; za njima stojita Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Evanish ml., potem je njihova hčerka Mary Ann, in njen mož Robert Doyle ter otroci Patrick in Margaret Ann Doyle.
Čestitamo in želimo jim vsem mnogo zdravja.
Teta štorklja se je oglasila pri Mr. in Mrs. Yacobucci in pustila čvrstega fantička. Pri tej družini so štirje rodovi, Shirley Yacobucci je hčerka od Frank in Angela Tomsic, ki sta stara ata in mamica, in pra-stara mama je Josephine Eisenhardt. Čestitamo! Vse so članice podr. št. 40, S.Ž.Z.
Pri Mr. in Mrs. Rudolph Conchech so pa dobili zalo hčerko; pri tem sta postala stari ata in stara mama Mr. in Mrs. Frank Seskar st. Čestitamo.
Zopet smo izgubile eno članico in sicer Louise Zaletel, ki je zapustila tri hčerke in dva sinova. Naj počiva v miru, preostalim pa naše sožalje.
Torej še enkrat vas opominjani, da ne pozabite na dan 2. oktobra, ko se skupaj popeljemo proti Clevelandu.

Št. 41, Cleveland, Ohio — Letos se hvala Ilogu nimamo pritoževati radi prevelike vročine. Tudi z našimi sejami nismo prekinile ker imamo kar povoljno udeležbo vsaki mesec.
Koncem meseca julija je ses. Ančka Koželj povabila članice šivalnega kluba na njen dom, kjer smo se prav dobro imiele ter bile prav izborno postrežene, za kar se na tem mestu Ančki pniv prisrčno zahvaljujemo.
V	avgustu smo pa imele izlet iri imenitno kosilo pri Mrs. Rose Lapp v Geneva, O. Tam, in tekom vožnje z busom tja in nazaj smo imele dosti raEvedrila in lepe zabave, tako, da sedaj veliko lažje opravljamo svoja vsakdanja dela.
Težki operaciji sta prestali sestri; Poloma Ballsh in Eva Lindič. V bolnišnici se je nahajala tudi ses. Mary
Coprich. Vsem želimo čimprejšnjega okrevanja.
Po dolgi mučni bolezni se je preselil v večnost Mr. Štefan Bencar, soprog ses. Mary Bencar. Pokojni zapušča tudi tri sinove, hčerko ter 13 vnukov. Ob tem času izrekamo družini naše globoko sožalje, pokojniku pa večni mir in pokoj.
V	blagajno so darovale ses.: M. Klaus, V. Jelenič, A. Husta in A. Bo-zich, prisrčna hvala vsem. Lepa hvala ses. Ančki Rebolj, ki nas je po seji pogostila s sladoledom.

št. 55, Girard, Ohio — Zadnja seja je bila precej dobro obiskana. Članice smo razmotrivale razne stvari, na primer piknik in obisk božje poti. Toda se je vse to odložilo za prihodnjo sejo.
Lunch sc servirale: Amelia Robsel, Frances Serca, Mary Niget in Helen Swabeck.
Bilo je vse zelo dobro in fino servirano. Prav lepa hvala committee.
Zadnji mesec so praznovale rojstni dan članice: Mary Ban, Anna Babish, Jennie Darass, Mary Fialla, Anna Kalan, Anna Kren, Anna Leskovec, Mary Niget in Anna Strauss. Še enkrat čestitamo prav vsem in kličemo še na mnoga leta.
V	bolnišnico sta se podali Beatrice Brayer in Matilda Cigolle, kateri sta že doma. Theresa Jaklovich je še vedno v bolnišnici. Članice so prošene, da jo obiščejo in ji pošljejo kartice. Mrs. Frances Bernard je tudi nesrečno padla in si je zlomila roko. Želimo Mrs. Jaklevlch, da bi se kmalu zopet vrnila zdrava domov in kakor tudi ostalim članicam, da bi se kmalu pozdravile in prišle zopet na sejo.

Št. 64, Kansas City, Kans. — Črez poletje so naše članice vse zaposlene. Nekatere imajo ohceti, a druge gredo na počitnice.
Članica Mary Gergich se je podala na obisk v New York k hčerki in zetu ter dvema vnukinjama. Več članic je namenjenih v Lemont, 111. Vsem želimo srečno pot in vesel povratek. Tudi midva s soprogom sva se 15. julija podala z zrakoplovom na Ameriške Brezje. Kmalu po sedmi uri zjutraj sva vstopila v zrakoplov in čez dve uri sva bila že v Chicagu iu kmalu potem v Lemontu, kjer sta naju prijazno sprejela Father Kristofer in Father Leonard ter sta skozi vse dni dobro skrbela za najino udobnost za kar jima gre najlepša hvala. Najprej sva si ogledala krasno kapelo v romarskem domu, kt je res lepa.
Še isti večer naju je prišel iskat zet iz 25 milj oddaljenega Park Forest in
smo bili pri njih na večerji. Hčerka Angela s svojo družino le bila zelo vesela snidenja z nami.
V soboto zjutraj sva se podala na pokopališče in pomolila na grobu pokojnega škofa Rožmana, p. Kazimirja Zakrajšek in Aleksandra Urankarja. Ko smo bili zadnjič tam smo se še z vsemi tremi osebno pozdravili.
Potem sva obiskala čast. sestre, ki so naju tako lepo sprejele in nama pripravile prav dober obed. Najlepša hvala č. sestram Šibila, Ancila, Kristofi-na, Avita in Pascal, ki vse pozdravljajo svoje bivše učence in župljane naše župnije v Kansas City.
V nedeljo dne 17. julija je bil v Lemontu Zvezin Dan. Zjutraj smo v procesiji šle na pokopališče Molile smo Rožni venec, katerega je vodil p. Pelagi. Urednica Corinne Leskovar in Mrs. Železnikar gl. blagajničarka sta položile venec na grob bivšega duhovnega vodje. Nato se je vršila sv. maša pri groti, katero je daroval p. Odilo in imel lepo pridigo. Bog mu podeli ljubo zdravje, da bi še veliko let vodil romanje v Lemontu. Opoldne so čikaške žene pripravile okusen o-bed. Popoldne so bile pete litanije, katerih se vsakdo veseli. Nato je bila zabava na hribčku in smo se pozdravili z več rojaki iz Chicage.
Corinne je predstavila vse glavne uradnice in je imela prav lušen program z petjem in plesom.
Pogrešali smo častno preds. Mrs. Prisland, Mrs. Livek in Albino.
V ponedeljek zjutraj sta naju prišla iskat z avtom hčerka Helen ln zet John Mellom s tremi otroki in naju odpeljala na njihov dom v Freeport, 111., kjer sva ostala 4 dni. Nato sva se zopet z zrakoplovom odpeljala iz Chicage nazaj v Kansas City. Vožnja je bila prav prijetna. Najlepši pozdrav vsem rojakom in rojakinjam s katerimi sva se v lemontu srečala.

št. 68, Fairport, O. — Zopet nekaj vrstic v našo priljubljeno Zarjo. Julijsko sejo smo prekinile. Sklenile smo, da bomo za spremembo napravile izlet na farmo, katero lastuje naša predsednica Jennie. In res smo se zbrale v lepem številu. Prav dobro smo se imele. Članice so prinesle potno dobrih reči, vsega je bilo na obilo, posebno kave, s katero nam je postregla. Jennie. Lahko vam je žal, katere se niste udeležile piknika. Jaz, ki sem kar precej oddaljena sem kar mislila, da moj piknik bo najbrž doma, toda me pokliče Jennie Lagina, "če hočeš iti na piknik, te bova z Ix>jzetom pobrala.” (namreč njen soprog.) “Kaj pa da, če sta tako dobra”, sem rekla Jennie. "Saj se mi zmiraj nekako prav obrne.” Hvaležna sem vama za tako uslugo. Podrobnosti piknika ne bom opisovala, samo rečem, da je zdravo za duha in telo, da se v prosti naravi snidemo, kjer se sliši veselo kramljajije in so vsaj za nekaj

časa skrbi pozabljene. Veselimo se, dokler nam Bog dopusti, saj čas je res krajši kakor si pa mislimo.
Imeli smo večinoma bolj hladno vreme in sedaj se pa že dnevi zopet krajšajo. Sestre članice, bodite pozdravljene in se vidimo na prihodnji seji.

Št. 85, DePue, III. — Še malo iz naše male doline. Poletje gre počasi h koncu, počitnice bodo kar hitro minule in zopet je čas, da začnemo misliti na naše seje. Naša prva jesenska seja bo 9. oktobra ob 2 liri popoldne.
Dne 4. in 5. septembra za Labor Day bodo tukaj velike dirke s čolni (boat races). Morda druge nimajo zanimanja za to reč, mene pa veseli ker je naše mesto bolj oživljeno, saj je vse mirno celo leto.
Torej pridite vse na sejo 2. okt. ob 2 pop. je že čas, da se vidimo. U-pam, da bomo še vse zdrave dočakale do takrat in še naprej.
Žal mi je, da je Anna Miller zbolela. Bila je v bolnišnici. Obiskala sem jo in njena soba je bila polna rož. Mislila sem si, da mora človek od veselja ozdraveti, ko vidi koliko prijateljic ima. Jaz pravim, da ena vijolica v življenju je več vredna kot vse rože po smrti. Anna se zdaj zdravi doma. Upam, da ne bo dolgo in zopet boš med nami. Me druge bomo pa zate molile. Bog ti daj zdravja, da boš med nam: na prihodnji seji.
Naša dolgoletna članica Franca Siska in njen soprog sta praznovala 50 letnico zakonskega življenja v krogu svoje družine. Želimo vama še mnogo let srečnega življenja. Naše srčne čestitke!

Št. 88, Johnstown, Pa. — Najprej prosim članice, da bi se vse malo potrudile, da bi dobile vsaka vsaj po eno novo člani eo. S tem bi se malo povečala naša podružnica. Čas gre naprej, toda doslej nimamo še nobene. Res je, da je precejšnja vročina, a je bolje kakor sneg in led.
Dne 15. maja smo imele krščanske matere banket v Johnstown. Bilo je zelo lepo in veselo razpoloženje.
Nato smo imeli piknik za cerkev sv. Anne 10. julija.
In .14. julija pa zopet banket, ker smo obhajali 25 letnico, odkar je bila cerkev v redu, da smo la.hko hodili k sv. maši. Imeli smo vsega v izobilju, nazadnje smo začeli pa še peti. Vse je pelo in bilo dobro razpoloženo, še jaz sem se razkričala, čeravno sem že precej v letih. Mislila Bem, da je moja piščalka v grlu že za nič, pa je še kar šlo.
Tako zdaj pa imamo malo več časa za pogledati za kakšno novo članico, da ne bomo vedno med zadnjimi. Dobro bi bilo, da bi dobila vsaka po eno novo Pozdrav celi S.Ž.Z.
Mary Lovge, tajnica
Št. 93, Bloomingburg, N.Y. — Precej časa ni bilo nič slišati iz N.Y., zato se zopet oglašam. Bila sem pri svoji hčerki Helen v Clevelandu, toda sem bolehala na žolčnih kamnih in ko sem se vrnila nazaj v N. York, sem morala v bolnišnico na operacijo. Rada bi se zahvalila vsem, ki so me tako veselo presenetili s prelepimi kartami in darili in prijaznimi obiski. Res nisem vedela, da imam toliko dobrih prijateljic v Clevelandu, da mi je kar sapa zastajala od radosti. Po vrnitvi v N.Y. sem bila na seji, ko so naše ženske zborovale in to mi je bilo nadvse prisrčno snidenje z našimi pridnimi članicami. Drage so-sestre, lepo je biti med nami in to človek najbolj ve, kadar je v bolnišnici. Hvala vam še enkrat za vse izraze prijateljstva. Zopet je to dokaz, kako lepo je biti pri Zvezi, saj ni lepšega kot da se ena druge spominja posebno v času bolezni, ker takrat se šele vidi kdo je pravi prijatelj. Št. 100, Fontana, Calif. — Na seji 7. julija so imele sledeče članice roj. dneve: Mary Vidergar, preds.; Anna Petrich, poročevalka; in Mary Lipovec, Mary Evanich in Mary Majzek.
Vse so prinesle cake in coffee in smo se prav dobro imele. Na tej seji smo tudi sklenile zaradi piknika, ki se je vršil v Little Creek, 17. julija. Vsaka članica je nekaj prinesla. Iz blagajne so kupile šunko in tako smo imele dosti za jesti. Za zabavo pa je igral mladi oseph Mlakar na harmoniko. On se je preselil sem letos iz Chisholm, Minn. Je izvrsten igralec in pevec slovenskih pesmi in zelo priljubljen tukaj v Fontani. Ima tudi prijazno soprogo in štiri sinove.
23. julija se je pa vršila Linen Bridal Shower Surprise za našo zapisnikarico Mary Lou Lipovec, ki se je poročila 27. avgusta s Frankom Vidergar, sinom naše predsednice Mr. in Mrs. Frank Vidergar. Party je priredila Patsi Vidergar, ki je tajnica Zveze in ima brata od ženina za soproga, Bill Vidergar. Udeležilo se je veliko članic, ki so prinesle lepa darila bodoči nevesti. Mary Ix)u in njen bodoči soprog sta zelo priljubljena v Fontani. Svatba se je vršila v S.N.-P.J. dvorani.
Naj še tukaj poročam, da je zvezino glasilo Zarja zelo priljubljeno med članicami. V številki fi—je čitala mo.i dopis članica Josephine Struna, ki je članica v Clevelandu in sedaj živeča v Pamoni, Califomiji pri hčeri. Na moj dopis se je pismeno oglasila. Doma je iz Žužemberka blizu mojega
rojstnega kraja. V kratkem jo bom šla osebno obiskat, da se kaj več pogovorimo; tako nas članice Zveza skupaj pripelje tukaj v Californiji, ker vedno v večjem številu prihajajo starejši ljudje sem in se tukaj naselijo.
Končno se pa hočem zahvaliti članici Rose Parkel, ker me vedno pobere in pelje na piknik in veselice. Ona je zelo dobra šoferka.

(Macaroons)
Deni v skledo 1 f. zribanih mandeljnov in 1 f. prašnega sladkorja In malo limonove lupine ter z rokama prav dobro zmešaj. Z žlico malo pretolči 5 beljakov ter jih primešaj k mandeljnom. Mešaj, da dobiš gladko testo. Nato naj testo stoji vsaj % ure. Z maslom malo namaži pecivno pločevino, jo potresi z malo moke ter nanjo z žlico zdevaj testo. Kupčki naj bodo drug od drugega oddaljeni 2 inči. Peci v malo vroči peči približno 1 uro. Ko so pečeni, jih takoj z lopatico zdevaj na suh prt.
Čokoladni maiuleljnuvi hlebčki
(Chocolate Macaroons)
Deni v skledo % ročke sladkorja, 7% unč zribanih mandeljnov, 2 unči zribane čokolade, 3 beljake, katere si samo malo z žlico pretolkla, ter 1 žličko vanilije. Vse to mešaj, da dobiš enolično in gladko testo. Zdevaj z žlico na pecivno pločevino in pri nizki temperaturi peci približno l uro. Še tople z lopatico zdevaj na krožnik.
Londonski zapognjenci
(London Wafers)
4% unče masla mešaj, da dobro naraste. Posamezno primešaj 4 rumenjake in 4% unče sladkorja ter malo naribane limonove lupine. Mešaj 10-15 minut. Rahlo primešaj trd sneg iz 4 beljakov in istočasno tudi 4% unče moke. Namaži z maslom pecivno pločevino (pleh) in jo prav malo z moko potresi. Razprosti po pločevini testo za debel nožev rob na debelo. Peci 8 minut, vzemi iz peči, razreži na ploščice, 2 prsta široke in za prst dolge, ter jih hitro deni na valjar, jih zapogni po valjarju in pusti, da se str* dijo in obdrže zaokroženo obliko. To delaj hitro, dokler je pecivo še vroče in mehko.
Itelgrajska slaščica (Belgrade Sweets)
Ubij v skledo 6 celih jajc, 5 rumenjakov In 1 f. sladkorja ter vse skupaj toliko časa mešaj, da bo vse skupaj ena sama pena. Nato primešaj 1 f. z1'*' banih mandeljnov, 2 žlici prav drobno zrezanega citronata, malo naribane H' monove lupine, % žličke cimeta, malo zdrobljenega klinčka, 1 f. moke, presejane skupno z l žličko pecivnega pra' ška. A B C’s Spell BABY
It is saSd that when a new baby was anticipated in the Basque region of Spain, custom decreed that the expectant lather take to his bed to be waited on by his wife. Today, the happy mother-to-be is the center of attention, and friends and relatives gather ‘round to celebrate the joyous event with parties and the traditional baby shower.
In response to the many requests for new baby shower ideas, Mary West, Tie-Tie party stylist, has come up with a new theme that is charming and simple to execute.
The first step is to prepare the invitations. Miss West suggests that you create your own, using simple rhymes on plain white note paper. For example:

Please join us at noon on Tuesday And we’ll celebrate together.
Add individuality by decorating these notes with pasted cut-out figures from a baby wrapping design. The envelopes, too, can be decorated to convey an air of gay festivity as soon as the invitations are received.
A pretty and practical new idea for a table centerpiece is alphabet blocks. These set the theme for the party and serve as a package depot for the gifts the guests bring. The centerpiece becomes gayer and more attractive as each brightly wrapped gift Is added. To make the alphabet blocks, remove the lids from square cardboard boxes. To integrate the motif for the party, wrap your gift for the guest of honor in the baby gift paper that was used for the invitations. The gift package should showr the same thoughtfulness and imagination as the party you have planned, so Miss West has created a perky clow'n made of spring bows to decorate the package. To make this clown, wind Satintone ribbon in as tiny a circle as possible around tip of thumb( as shown in diagram). Moisten slightly and press
firmly to hold. This ribbon will stick
to itself when moistened. Hold first loop firmly between thumb and forefinger and continue making a series of graduated loops. Still holding between fingers, slip narrow tie through smallest loop and, using teeth for third hand, tie and knot tightly without crushing loop. For clown’s head, make a smaller series of loops and tie. Then match the center ties of both bows and knot together.
To mjike the clown’s, place a length of 1-*4-Inch Satintone on the ilVustrated pattern, trace outline with pencil, and cut. Bend at center of straight edge, forming a cone, moisten straight edge and press firmly together Moisten cone and attach to clown's head. A little bow tie and buttons will add a jaunty touch.
Place cards can be decorated with cut-outs from the snips of the gift paper. Use 3x5 file cards, pasting cutouts in one corner. Top off each place card with a little clown head.
Your menu, too, can carry out the alphabet theme. It may be as simple as including alphabet soup in your luncheon. Or, individual molded salads can be trimmed with the letters B A B Y by using strips of red pimento and green pepper. Dessert portions could be initialed by using a whipped cream dispenser. If serving cake, decorate the top with the name of the guest of honor, and the sides with block letters spelling out BABY.
When the excitement of opening and admiring the gifts has quieted, an amusing game can be played with anagrams. Distribute ten or twelve alphabet squares to each guest and let them invent names for the baby to be. The results can be unexpected and amusing.
Your baby shower will be inexpensive, fun to arrange, and will leave many happy memories.

S.W.U. FUNERAL BENEFITS
In S.W.U. we accept all women and children if Slovenian descent, and other white women and children of the white race, all being practical Catholics of good moral character and in good health. Members of the adult department Class A shall be at least 14 and not over 50 years of age. Into Class B members shall be accepted who are 14 and not over 55 years of age. The applicant for membership shall be recommended by a member knowing the applicant well. No medical examination is necessary.
S.W.U. FUNERAL BENEFITS
Members shall be entitled to all the rights and privileges which the Union may be able to grant. The Union shall care for the deceased members as follows:
a) Through the subordinate branches it shall provide for proper burial for its deceased members.
b) The Union shall pay the following sums toward funeral expenses:
Class A: $25 for a deceased member from acceptance until two years of membership; $100 for a deceased member of two or more years standing.
Class B: $50 for a deceased member from the time of acceptance until two years of membership. For deceased members of two years or more standing will be paid the following benefits:
$300 for all who joined between the ages of 14 and 30 years;
$250 for all who joined between the ages of 3l and 40 years;
$200 for all who joined between the ages of 41 and 45 years;
$150 for all who joined between the ages of 46 and 55 years.
Monthly dues: Class A — 40 cents; Class B — 65 cents; Juvenile department — 10 cents. Classes A and B assessment includes the subscription of official organ "Zarja-The Dawn”.

CLOTHES OF THE ESKIMOS
After we have been a short while in the igloo, the father and mother crawl in. They are dressed in furs like the children. The father drags a big seal behind him. He has just caught it through a hole in the ice. Too-kee and Ikwa shout when they see it, for the seal means a good dinner.
The father then takes off most of his clothes. The air seems chilly to us, but !t is too warm for the Eskimos, who go almost naked when inside the house. We see now that each person wears two suits, one over the other. The outer suit is made with the fur outside. The other suit is finer. It is made with soft skin with the fur inward. Ikwa’s inside trousers and stockings are made of skin of a young reindeer. Too-kee's inside parka is of bird skins.
Before Too-kee throws her clothing aside, she takes some things out of her pockets. See! Her pockets are two pouches, sewed to the shoulders of her outside parka, and two little bags, one sewed to each of her boots. When the pockets are full they make her seem very large.
Now look at the mother who is standing beside us. Her parka has a big lump on her shoulders. She turns around and we see that the lump is a baby. Its red face is peeking out of the fur behind its mother’s neck. When it wakes up and sees us, it does not know whether to laugh or cry.
An Eskimo baby is always carried that way. The mother’s coat is made very full, and it has a long bag of soft fur at the back. The little one is put into the bag and held up by a belt which its mother ties tightly a-round her waist. Sometimes the baby lies naked in the fur. Sometimes it wears only a little fur skirt and a cap.

Cadet Lieutenant Tom J. Tomsic
was graduated on June 5, 1960 with first honors from Nazareth Hall Military School in Grand Rapids, Ohio. He was valedictorian of his class. One of his extra-curricular activities, earned him (the only one of his class) a Certificate in piano and theory of mut.ii'. He received special award in religion too. Tom is entering Bor-romeo High Lii Wickhixx, Ohio this fall.
Cadet I.t. Tomsic was in charge of the annual military review held in Toledo, Ohio, on May 22, 1960.
He is the son of Mrs. Frances Tomsic, member of branch 42 and grand son of president Mrs. Antonia Legan, branch 42. Three aunts are also members, Mrs. Antonia Matis, Mrs. Julia Lipnos and Mrs. Lillian Sadowski.

Junior members, Frank Sietz and Max Traven spent a weekend in New York where they visited Coney Island, Empire State Bldg. and took a ferry boat ride to see the Statue of Liberty.
I visited my brother and his wife in Rochester, N.Y. for a week. I went swimming everyday in the large pool they have nearby.
