»Gospod je moj pastir ...«
Po naših cerkvah se bo danes zopet razlegal spev iz najmočnejših verzov psalmske lirike: »Gospod je moj pastir, nič mi ne manjka, na zelenih pašnikih mi daje ležišča.«
Simbol dobrega pastirja je prisoten v vseh današnjih liturgijah, simbolizem poln odmevov, ki nam pogosto uidejo: pastir na antičnem Vzhodu ni bil le nekdo, ki je pasel in gnal čredo, temveč je s svojo drobnico trpel tudi žejo, pripeko in mraz v nočeh.
Ob tej Jezusovi prispodobi zgradi evangelist Janez »priliko«, ki jo lahko naslovimo »Prilika dobrega pastirja in razbojnika.« Kristus se namreč predstavi kot dobri pastir, ki skrbi za svoje ovce. Eno izmed vrat, ki so vodila v jeruzalemski tempelj, so imenovali prav Ovčja vrata. Morda je Jezus, ko je to govoril, gledal prav Jude, kako stopajo skozi ta vrata, da bi srečali v bogoslužju svojega najvišjega Pastirja in Gospoda. Drzno, skoraj bogokletno izjavi: »Jaz sem vrata za ovce.«gre torej za pravi tempelj, ki vas bo povezal z večnostjo; sem vaš pastir in Gospod. Izraz »Jaz sem« je imel poseben prizvok med judovskimi poslušalci. Kliče v spomin besede, ki jih je Bog spregovoril Mojzesu iz gorečega grma: »Jaz sem, ki sem«, skrivnostno poimenovanje Boga.
Ravno ta stran Janezovega evangelija je začetek himne Kristusovemu božanstvu. Jezusovo zadržanje do svojih ovac - vernikov je opisano s pastoralnimi glagoli na zelo privlačen način. »Vstopi skozi vrata«, kar pomeni, da ima takojšen odnos s svojo čredo. Njegov klic

je oseben (»eno po eno«). Za vsakogar ima osebno sporočilo (»po imenu«), dialog poteka »beseda-poslušanje« (»poznajo moj glas«).
Božji Pastir spusti svojo čredo na rodovitne pašnike, »hodi pred njimi« kakor vodnik, medtem ko njegove ovce hodijo »za njim«, kar v evangeljskigovorici pomeni »ovce-učenci« Z njim imajo njegove ovce »življenje«. V teh besedah se prikaže skupnost-čreda kot Kristusova Cerkev.
Vendar pa Janezova »prilika« ni samo svetla, ampak prikazuje tudi temno plat. Ponoči se pojavi tat, »ki ne vstopi skozi vrata, temveč pleza po drugi strani in ustrahuje ovce«. Razbojnik, ki je prišel »krast, ubijat in uničevat«. Je neznanec, ki vzbuja strah in nezaupanje.
Med nauke dobrega pastirja se »vmeša« smrt, ki jo tat nosi s seboj. Že prerok Ezekijel nas je v svojih besedilih opozoril na ti dve osebi. Na Pastirja: »Izgubljene pokličem, razkropljene pripeljem nazaj, ranjene obvežem, bolne pokrepčam, zdrave in krepke obvarujem. Pasel jih bom, kakor je prav« (Ezk 36,16), in na lažne pastirje: »Mleko uživate, z volno se oblačite, tolste živali koljete, črede pa ne pasete« (Ezk 34,3). Zgodi se, da ima pastir lažno očarljivost, seje pokvarjenost in smrt.
Zato se na današnjo nedeljo Dobrega pastirja dviga iz naših src resnična prošnja za dobre pastirje: Gospod, daj nam duhovnih voditeljev, ki bodo ljubili s tvojim srcem in kazali mladim in starejšim pot k Očetu. Naj postane tudi vsa Cerkev vrata k Bogu in vrata k ljudem po ljubezni, ki je ne bo strah izgoreti za svoje bližnje in jih tako priklicati v življenje. Gospod, navduši naše mlade, da se ne bodo bali stopiti iz svojih strahov in uklenjenosti ter se odpreti tvoji ljubezni, ki jih bo poklicala k najrazličnejšim služenjem, da bo tako tudi njihovo življenje polno in uresničeno.

Gates and doors play a major role in the symbolism of our spiritual lives. We may remember the Holman Hunt painting The Light of the World, depicting Jesus knocking on a long-neglected door which has no handle on his side. The Romans were inordinately fond of their triumphal arches built for conquering generals and emperors. A common traditional image of life after death is that of the "pearly gates" with St Peter checking people in. It is a symbol that celebrates the threshold to something new but it also carries with it the thought of closure and no entry.
Two little stories illustrate both sides of this symbolism. Anthony de Mello develops the idea of the sheepfold in that he imagines it as having a hole in the wall through which the sheep escape. Jesus, the good shepherd, goes in search of the lost sheep and brings them back, but he does not repair the

hole. At the other end of the spectrum, the German author Franz Kafka has a short story of the appellant who comes to sit at the door of the law, waiting for his case to be heard. After many years a functionary finally appears, and the man asks him why he has seen no other appellants appearing at the door. The functionary replies: "That is because this is your door, and I am now going to close it!" Towards which end of the spectrum do your life experiences lead you?
Gospel Teaching
The parable told to his disciples by Jesus in today's Gospel obviously tends towards the positive end of the symbolic spectrum. The disciples fail to understand the story when it is first told to them. As usual we look to the end of the story to see what point is being made. Jesus is warning his followers about being led astray by those who are not preachers of the truth. As sheep recognise the voice of their shepherd, his followers too need to recognise his voice and follow him. In his explanation of the parable Jesus then develops another thought. He offers the idea that he is the gate of the sheepfold. It is through him that the sheep go safely in and out.
His words are an anticipation of how he will help his disciples come to terms with his leaving
them, saying that they know the way to where he is going. Thomas objects that they do not know where he is going, so how can they know the way? To which comes the famous reply that Jesus himself is "the Way, the Truth and the Life". It is very much a theme that recurs in John's Gospel, this centring of our belief on the person of Jesus. It is by believing in him, recognising his voice, clinging to him that we receive the gift of eternal life. Once we do that we are free to come and go through the gate, always sure of finding nourishment. The intention of thieves is to steal, kill and destroy; the aim of Jesus is to offer us life in all its fullness.
Application
Do we see gates as the threshold to freedom or insurmountable barriers? In his epic poem Divine Comedy, the fourteenth-century writer Dante imagined the gates of hell had "Abandon hope all you who enter here" written above them. The parable speaks of "thieves and brigands" trying to enter through the gate. When cities were walled their gates were often the only way of entering and so were guarded carefully and closed at night. But another stratagem of thieves and brigands was to enter the city surreptitiously and then open the gates illegally in the middle of the night. The capture and destruction of Troy by the Greeks, described in Homer's Iliad, is the most famous example of this.
We now lock our doors much more than we did in the past, and even church doors are often kept locked for security reasons. These fears and habits inevitably make it much more difficult for us to understand or live by the practices offered by Jesus. Perhaps we prefer to keep his instructions to a highly spiritual level, which allows us in our minds to open our doors to him while closing them to everyone else. Do we keep open house, do we welcome the stranger, do we make hospitality our special care? Do we enable people to enter through the gate of Jesus the good shepherd, and to find a home in him?

The Rosary Is a Powerful Weapon_

The month of May is here. Especially now, we have an opportunity this month to go to The Blessed Virgin Mary for help and strength. We have a wonderful Heavenly Mother and it would be great if we could really express our love and devotion to her for the next thirty-one days.
It used to be traditional that in this month people prayed the rosary at home with their family. Many families got away from that because we became too busy. Individually people stopped saying the rosary because it took too long and seemed "old school". The restrictions of the corona pandemic have restored time to pray. Are we ready? Let's do it! Will you pray the rosary for the next thirty-one days? Will you invite family members and friends to pray it with you?
The rosary is a powerful weapon! Pope Francis has made this strong appeal: "Let's go to Our Lady for help, praying the rosary at home for the month of May... This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on the internet to find good models of prayers to follow."
My suggestions for praying the rosary for thirty-one days straight are the following:
1.	With those you live with (your family) - call a meeting today! Come up with a regular time daily. Everyone agrees - we stop what we are doing and pray it.
2.	If you don't have someone at home to pray with, call one of your best friends daily at a set time! Make an agreement between yourselves. Commit, that you each will pray the rosary with one another on the phone or by video call every day.
3.	You can also pray virtually with the Salesian family every day at 7:30 pm at marysmonth2020.org.
We will receive much grace and strength to overcome this pandemic by praying the rosary. The rosary is a powerful weapon against evil. Mary our holy Mother wants to help us through this rough time. She will intercede for us and pull us together as a spiritual family, the Church.
All of you are in my prayers.
P.S. Below are two prayers that can (may) be added to the end of your rosary. The Holy Father, Pope Francis, asks that we alternate saying them daily.
First Prayer
O Mary,
You shine continuously on our journey
as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick,
who, at the foot of the cross,
were united with Jesus' suffering,
and persevered in your faith.
"Protectress of the Roman people", you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and burdened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
Second Prayer
We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God; Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from every danger, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin.

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.
Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes toward us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.
Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.
Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.
Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fidelity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.
Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.
Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may
devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsightedness and solidarity.
Mary Most Holy, stir all consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.
Mary, Consolation of the Afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.
To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

Consecration of Canada to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, in time of pandemic

Brothers and Sisters, in this time of pandemic marked by desolation and with worry about the future, let us entrust our country to the care and protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may benefit from her powerful intercession as we join our prayers and efforts with her maternal mediation in Christ.
By imploring the incomparable help of Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, we invoke her solicitude upon our country and ask that she intercede with her Son Jesus to hear the prayers of her children who seek protection from the ravages of the coronavirus, healing for those who are ill, wisdom and courage for those who assist the sick and distressed, and eternal rest for those who have died.
During this month of May, which the Church particularly dedicates to the Mother of Christ, we are one in consecrating ourselves and our loved ones to Mary most Holy, the humble Handmaid of the Lord and his most perfect Disciple. We lift up in prayer and in recognition all those many women and men, clergy, religious and laity, who tirelessly commit themselves to the care of others. The innumerable acts of deep human kindness as well as authentic Christian charity which we witness across the globe are a source of great consolation for all. We are reminded evermore of the need to believe and hope against all hope, and we are called to reach out to the needy, the lonely and the dying, and so welcome the graces of divine consolation.

Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, in this time of pandemic, we turn our gaze to you, and in Christ consecrate to you the members of our Slovenian Community together with all the people of Canada.
At the Annunciation, fear gave way to trust as you embraced the mysterious and loving plan of God, who through his providence, care and concern brought about newness of life in you and through you.
Intercede, we pray, on our behalf as your children, Virgin most faithful.
Grant us faith, hope and perseverance, as we strive to serve and bear witness to all persons, responding to the needs of those affected by this virus.
Standing at the foot of the Cross at Calvary, you united yourself with the sufferings of Christ and so uniquely contributed to the mystery of our redemption.
We beseech you as Health of the sick, draw to yourself in maternal compassion the brothers and sisters of your Son Jesus and all those who are grieved by this pandemic.
Strengthen the dying and comfort those who weep so that all may experience the healing grace of Christ our Divine Physician.
At the Cenacle, after the Resurrection, you accompanied the Apostles with prayer for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
In your maternal care as Consoler of the afflicted, accompany healthcare professionals, all who minister to the sick and those who seek a cure to end this pandemic, that the Holy Spirit may renew the face of the earth.

To all of us, dearest Mary, Mother of all the living, be present and show forth your tenderness, as we raise our eyes to you who shines forth before the entire community as a merciful and compassionate companion on our journey. Time and time again, with burdens weighing heavily on their hearts and in their many necessities, the Christian faithful have sought refuge under your mantle of protection.
Come quickly to our aid at this time, Mother of Mercy, and deliver us from the dangers that surround us in our hour of need; watch over especially the elderly, the weak and the infirm, our children and the unity of our families, and all those who give of themselves selflessly in pastoral care to those in need until in your arms and in your gentle embrace we all find safety and solace.

Mati najdražja, Mati vseh živih, bodi nam vsem blizu in pokaži svojo ljubeznivost, ko dvigamo svoje oči k tebi, ki si luč za vso skupnost, kot usmiljena in sočutna sopotnica na naši poti. Ko so naša srca obtežena s težkimi bremeni in so potrebe velike, se verni kristjani vedno znova zatekamo pod tvoj zaščitni plašč.
Mati usmiljenja, pridi hitro in nam tudi tokrat pomagaj v naši potrebi in reši v nevarnosti, ki nas obdaja; bdi še posebej nad starejšimi, slabotnimi in bolnimi, našimi otroci, našimi družinami in tistimi, ki se neutrudno žrtvujejo v pastoralni skrbi za tiste, ki so v potrebi, dokler v tvojem objemu ne bomo našli tolažbe in varnosti.

B I S H O P O F H A M I L T O N Message for Catholic Education Week
The theme of this year's Catholic Education Week is "Igniting Hope". Even in the midst of difficulty, we are a people of hope - hope for the world, hope for the future, hope rooted in Christ. We all need hope.
As we look around us, we see many struggles and challenges. The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic around the world reminds us that life on Earth is not perfect; we do not yet live in heaven. As Christians, however, we can make sacrifices, and look upon these struggles and difficulties with hope. To be a resurrection people means that we know our Savior lives! He is the source of our hope. This is a great gift we have to offer the world - our hope.
In our publicly funded Catholic schools in Ontario, our hope is alive! Over this past school year, we have faced our own struggles, including the unprecedented shutdown at schools across Canada. Through it all, you have been witnesses to hope. In the weeks and months you spent in your classrooms, you remembered and celebrated the birth of Jesus, and you told the story and prayed together in hope, looking forward to His coming. In parishes across the Diocese, we celebrated Confirmations together and saw scores of young people coming to the Sacraments, continuing their journey of faith, opening themselves to the power of God's grace. Some are still preparing for their celebrations. These are experiences of hope - for the young people and their parents as well as for pastors and parishes and teachers and school communities. We
began our Lenten preparations together and then found ourselves at home. We learned about caring for one another through social distancing. We learned that even when we are apart from one another, we are joined as one Body by the foundation of our hope as Christians - the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Publicly funded Catholic schools are places of hope! I know you have found ways to be people of hope in your communities and beyond. You have given hope by helping the poor, marching for clean and safe water, reducing your waste, striving for justice for the unborn, witnessing to your faith in Christ courageously in your neighbourhoods and across the globe. I am grateful to the priests of the diocese, the pastoral workers, the chaplaincy leaders, the trustees, administrators, teachers, parents and all involved in Catholic Education for your ongoing collaboration and dedication. Your leadership and the ways in which you work together for the common mission of Catholic Education is a sign of great hope in our communities.
Hope is a work of the Holy Spirit. It is rooted in our faith in Christ. It keeps us steady when times are challenging. It empowers us to be a people ready to proclaim and witness and work for God's kingdom here on Earth. That hope lives in each one of us -young and old. And together, as one body, we can allow that hope to give energy to our ideas and activity, our learning and our prayer.
In the words of Saint Paul, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13)

STOPILI SMO V MESEC MAJ_
Skoraj ne morem verjeti, da smo že v mesecu maju, Marijinem mesecu. Ker naše cerkve še niso odprte, si lahko pomagate s poslušanjem šmarnic na Radiu Ognjišče. Vsak večer ob 7:00h (po kanadsko ob 1:00 p.m.) prenašajo mašo iz Brezij in med mašo prebirajo šmarnice za odrasle. Sicer pa jih lahko posebej poslušate iz radijskega arhiva.
Šmarnice so še vedno ena najbolj priljubljenih ljudskih pobožnosti na Slovenskem. Majniška marijanska pobožnost je po raziskavah nemškega liturgika Kuppersa nastala v povezavi s češčenjem lesa križa v maju, s čimer so v nemških deželah nadomestili pogansko majsko drevo (Maibaum).
Med Slovenci se je majniška pobožnost začela v ljubljanskem semenišču leta 1851. Janez Volčič je leta 1855 napisal knjigo z naslovom Šmarnice, po cvetlici, ki vzcveti v začetku maja, in pod tem imenom se je pobožnost hitro razširila med ljudmi.
Bratje frančiškani so za šmarnično branje izbrali knjigo Zgodnja danica, ki jo je leta 1991 napisal duhovnik Franc Sodja in govorijo o Marijini poti.
Franc Sodja se je rodil 31. avgusta 1914 v Bohinjski Bistrici. Za njegovo vzgojo sta bila
odločilna vera v družini in planinski svet. Po gimnaziji in bogoslovju v Ljubljani je bil leta 1941 posvečen v duhovnika. Želel je iti v misi-jone na Kitajsko, a sta mu vojna in revolucija prekrižali načrte.
V	težkih povojnih letih je kot lazarist deloval v Ljubljani, Beogradu, v Makedoniji in na Kosovu. Vmes je pet let preživel v zaporu. Zaradi nenehnih pritiskov s strani udbe po prihodu iz ječe, je pobegnil v Kanado. Kmalu zatem je odšel v Buenos Aires, kjer je vrsto let vodil Misijonski zavod. Zadnja desetletja je spet živel v Kanadi, kjer je umrl 15. julija 2007.
Morda ste prebrali na internetu ali slišali od svojih sorodnikov, da se v Sloveniji od ponedeljka zopet odpirajo cerkve za mašo s prisotnostjo vernikov. Ne bo še tako, kot je bilo pred epidemijo, kajti vsi morajo nositi maske in držati razdaljo 1,5 metra. Škofje tudi priporočajo, naj gredo verniki k maši tudi med tednom, kar bo veljalo za nedeljsko mašo - posebej v župnijah kjer niso cerkve velike.
V	četrtek smo imeli duhovniki s škofijo tele-konferenco - zaenkrat tukaj še ni nič govora kdaj bomo odprli zopet cerkve za maše z ljudstvom. Vse je odvisno tudi od regulacije province Ontario. Nadaljevali bomo z nedeljskimi mašami preko Facebooka in ostali povezani na tak način. Hvala vsem, ki tako ali drugače prispevate svoj dar za vzdrževanje cerkve.
Naj nas Marija, naša nebeška Mati ohranja povezane in pri zdravju, da bomo, ko bo čas lahko zopet skupaj sodelovali v cerkvi in morda bolj cenili to kar imamo.

Slovenec bo nadškof in nuncij v Iraku
POKOJNI
Dr. Mitja Leskovar se je rodil 3. januarja 1970 v Kranju. Odraščal je na Kokrici pri Kranju. Leta 1989 je vstopil v ljubljansko bogoslovje. Po petih letih študija je diplomiral iz teologije in bil posvečen v diakona. 29. junija 1995 je v Ljubljani prejel duhovniško posvečenje in bil imenovan za kaplana župnije Domžale. Po dveh letih je bil poslan na nadaljnji študij v Rim, kjer je leta 1999 pridobil magisterij, dve leti kasneje pa še doktorat iz cerkvenega prava na papeški univerzi Gregoriani. Obenem je opravil izobraževanje za vatikansko diplomatsko službo, ki jo je nastopil leta 2001 na Apostolski nunciaturi v Bangladešu. Leta 2003 je bil prestavljen na Državno tajništvo Svetega sedeža v Vatikanu, kjer je deloval naslednjih enajst let. V istem obdobju je bil tudi pomočnik duhovnega asistenta Bratovščine svetih apostolov Petra in Pavla v Vatikanu ter redni spovednik na eni izmed rimskih župnij.
Leta 2015 je bil imenovan za svetovalca nunciature v Nemčiji, leta 2018 pa je prevzel isto vlogo na nunciaturi v Indiji in Nepalu.
V petek, 1. maja 2020, ga je papež Frančišek imenoval za naslovnega nadškofa Beneventa in apostolskega nuncija v Iraku. Poleg maternega jezika dr. Leskovar govori italijansko, angleško, nemško, hrvaško, francosko in špansko.
Zaradi trenutnih negotovih razmer v zvezi s pandemijo še ni znano, kdaj bo msgr. Leskovar prejel škofovsko posvečenje in kdaj bo lahko nastopil svojo novo službo.
V Sloveniji, v Ljutomeru, je 1. maja odšla k Bogu po večno plačilo MARIJA KELENC, mama Ivana Kelenc (Kitchener), sestra Vera Rajner in sestrična Bohnečevih: Vera, Tončka, Toni in Ana. Pokojna je bila stara 88 let. Zanjo bomo darovali sveto mašo danes, 3. maja v naši cerkvi. Glede pogreba zaenkrat še ni znano kdaj bo. Iskreno sožalje vsem žalujočim domačim in sorodnikom, pokojni Mariji pa večni mir in pokoj.
