IANI - FUTURE GATEWAY FOR INTERLENDING COM M UNICATION Elisabet Mickos SCANNET, Helsinki University o f Technology Library Espoo, Finland IANI, the Intelligent Access to Nordic Information, is a PC-program developed for NORDINFO by CRI in Denmark. The lANI-prototype gives at present easy and uniform access to three different Nordic hosts. Information retrieval is carried out with the help of menus or the IANI command language which is translated into the respective host command language. The IANI language is based on the ISO CCL standard draft 8777. During this year new Nordic hosts will be implemented. The lANI-data- bases include some large library and union catalogues, which make it easy for the lANI-user to locate the desired publications. Hence the next stage of development of the lANI-prototype comprises an online document ordering facility in the form of an electronic mail box function. A succesful ordering and supply system has to be flexible and extendable to other existing systems. For this purpose a survey of Nordic interlibrary loan and document ordering systems has been carried out by BRODD in Norway. This states that only a few online ordering systems are in use in the Nordic countries and suggests various solutions for the IANI interlending facility. The first stage of the online ordering facility will be by means of a mailbox function. By transferring the order, consisting of down loaded references, to the mailbox, and forwarding to the participating libraries, the user will hopefully get faster and more direct service. However, to develop an online ordering facility that is more sophisticated than a plain mailbox system, it requires discussions about, and recommendations for, the future Nordic interlibrary loan strategy, including the utilization of standardization work in this field. This raises also the need for looking at the interlending and document supply fees. Knjižnica. Tematska Sl. IATUL 1989 19
