28. NEDELJA MED LETOM 28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SLOVENSKA ŽUPNIJA SV. GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 41/52 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 9. 10. 2016 Fr. Drago Gačnik, SDB ŽUPNIK - PASTOR NASLOV - ADDRESS 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 TEL.: 905-561-5971 FAX: 905-561-5109 E-MAIL Gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca WEB PAGE www.carantha.com HALL RENTALS CELL: 905-518-6159 E-MAIL Hallrental@ stgregoryhamilton.ca VESTNIK HVALEŽNOST Gobavo naselje ni bilo v Palestini nič nenavadnega; »Tako pač mora biti,« so se opravičevali. Luka posebej poudarja ob ozdravljenju zahvalo. 362 | VESTNIK 2016 364 | VESTNIK 2016 366 | VESTNIK 2016 368 | VESTNIK 2016 370 | VESTNIK 2016 372 | VESTNIK 2016 Drugi del besedila knjige predstavlja oris kulturnih in izobraževalnih dejavnosti v okviru središča. Bistveni del knjige so ilustracije. Fotografija razbije besedilo in pritegne pozornost. Zelo dobro so zbrani zapisniki sej župnijskega sveta in letnega občnega zbora župnije. V preteklosti je to urejala gospa Cecilija Mlinarič. Sedaj so drugi sodelavci g. Gregorija Velikega. Vesel bom, če bo do naslednjega srečanja prišlo v Sloveniji. Hvala vsem in še naprej lepo nedeljo. We made "cešpljevi cmoki," plain knedelni as well as sataraš and everything was delicious. We would first like to thank Milena Krusic for coming out to teach our gals how to make sataraš, it was a delicious topping to our knedelni. As you know, we have had several cooking sessionsover the past couple years and it is wonderful to see how the cooking sessions have evolved into more than just a learning session with demonstrations and instruction of Slovenian based recipes. Those who are participating in learning our cultural recipes are also enjoying a fun and dynamic environment. We should really change the name of these cooking gatherings to "Our cooking social;"that is how enjoyable these kitchen sessions are! Our next cooking experience is scheduled for Saturday November 19th in the lower hall. The plan right now is to demonstrate various cookies that could be shared with family and friends over the Christmas Holidays. Participation will be limited as preparing and baking cookies will take a lot of space and many ovens. I already have 5 people signed up, so if you are interested, please contact me ASAP to reserve your spot. See you in the Kitchen! Heidy Novak email: novakh@sympatico.ca tel: 905-317-6002 At this time of year, we celebrate a bountiful harvest by celebrating with family and friends. But for many people in our community, there is precious little for which to give thanks. Eighteen percent of Hamilton residents live in poverty, includ-ing almost a quarter of our children. And the need doesn't subside; 20 new people register with us for emergency ser-vices every single day. At Good Shepherd's Venture Centre, 120 people visit us for food and clothing daily. Thanks to your generous support we ensure that people in need can access our services. We hope that St. Gregory the Great Parish can help us this autumn. Your acts of kindness help us ease the burden of poverty during times when Good Shepherd's food supplies are dwindling. Can your Church help us restock our food shelves through the Good Shep-herd's Harvest for the Hungry Food Drive? SLOVENIAN CANADIAN SCHOLAR-SHIP FOUNDATION “The Foundation was established to encourage youth of Slovenian descent to pursue academic excel-lence in post secondary col-lege and/or university studies and to encourage them to exempli-fy pride in their rich Slovenian cultural roots and traditions as Canadian citizens in leadership roles of the future.” (Mission Statement) All scholarships and bursaries will be awarded at a special luncheon (also a fund-raiser) on Sunday October 23rd, 2016. We hope to see everyone there, as we will be celebrating our 20th year awarding scholar-ships and bursaries to our youth of Slove-nian descent. First Reading 2 Kings 5:14-17 Naaman the Syrian general is healed of his lep-rosy in the Jordan and gives thanks to Israel’s God. Second Reading 2 Timothy 2:8-13 Paul bears his suffering for the sake of the Good News, which he preaches in the hope that all may experience the salvation that is promised in Christ Jesus. Gospel Luke 17:11-19 Jesus cures the ten lepers but notices that it is the foreigner, the Samaritan, who is the only one to come back to thank and praise God. “It seems that no one has come back to give praise to God, except this foreigner.” Illustration There’s a cartoon about a business company that had been guilty of malpractices. The board meets to work out a statement explaining what happened. There is a picture of the board at the end of their discussion and the chairman is saying, “If there are no other ideas, then it’s agreed, we blame the media.” This is a common practice, which we are all tempted to follow. It’s called scapegoating. You look around for a person or group that you can blame for the bad things that are happening. It is often a blanket condemnation of a nation or group. It’s simpler that way and it lets us off the hook. Someone else is to blame, not us. Of course, there is sometimes a core of truth behind the hostility. Those we accuse did some bad things and then the hatred grew. In biblical times we know that the Jews and the Samaritans felt such a hatred and regarded each other as enemies. In fact they were quite close in their religion; they shared the same Torah and revered Moses, but they wor-shipped in different temples. Josephus the Jewish historian tells us that not long before Jesus began his ministry the Samaritans had secretly polluted the Temple at Jerusalem by scattering bones there. Se-curity had to be increased. But then Samaritans killed some Galileans who were on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. So there was an explosive tension be-tween Jews and Samaritans; such tensions also ex-isted between other groups in Jesus’ homeland. Gospel Teaching This tension is reflected throughout Luke’s Gos-pel. In Jesus’ first sermon in Nazareth he infuriates his home-town congregation by reminding them that in the past God had healed an outsider, a Syrian general called Naaman. In today’s first reading we are told how this foreign soldier, who had become an outcast through contracting leprosy, was healed through the Jewish prophet Elisha. God sometimes gives priority to foreigners; but Jesus’ listeners don’t want to hear that. Later in the Gospel, as Jesus be-gan his journey to Jerusalem, some Samaritans re-fused him entry to their village. Infuriated, James and John offered to call down fire on them, but Je-sus rebuked his zealous disciples. Now today in the Gospel Jesus is again travel-ling in that dangerous borderland between Galilee and Samaria. Suddenly ten lepers confront him. They have to keep their distance because according to the law they are impure, so they shout, pleading for him to show them mercy. Jesus orders the ten to show themselves to the priests. And they are all healed. God has marvellously saved them so that they can return to normality. What happens next? They all depart for home, taking for granted their cure, but one of the ten comes back praising God and throwing himself down in gratitude at the feet of Jesus. Which one was that? Here comes the point of the story, for we are told, “The man was a Samari-tan.” As Jesus says, it was only the foreigner who came back to give thanks. And we remember that it was the parable of the good Samaritan that Jesus used to shock his audience into recognising that an enemy can be a true neighbour. Application Not much has changed over two thousand years. It is not difficult to list groups and nations who still hate each other. And throughout history, we can see how easy it is to make scapegoats of whole races, religions, nations or groups. Who it is will depend on who we are and where we come from. It’s easy too – and sometimes very convenient – for politicians to stir up suspicion against certain groups and to blame them for society’s ills. In some cases the original division may be the result of a particular act of violence or injustice. If this is the case, we may not deny that an evil act has been committed; but Jesus teaches us that it is wrong to extend the blame to every member of a group as though all are guilty. Jesus shocks his audience by showing them that God’s grace is working in their enemies. His purpose was to bring salvation not just to the Jews but to the Gentiles too – that includes us. When we blame all asylum seekers, all immigrants, all Mus-lims, or any other group for bad things that are hap-pening we are failing to hear and live out the Gos-pel. God’s grace is unbounded. Remember the one who came back to give thanks was the foreigner. Retrouvaille: A Lifeline for Troubled Marriages – So many couples struggle alone and confused with their difficulties.
