To me it has no meaning,
It’s just another day,
For me it’s gone forever,

Other kids are buying Their gifts for Mother now,

There was a faint and feeble knock at the door of life. Loud and more insistent it grew. Opening the door, the angel of life saw a woman, pale with pain, but with sparkle of expectant hope in her eye.
I have come for my child,” she said eagerly. “Give it to me quickly. I have come a long hard way. My strength may not last until I return.”
“Just a moment,” answered the angel slowly, “Your child is here. But you must pay me for him.”
“Pay for him?” echoed the visitor. “My husband and I have very little money. What little we have we will need for the baby.”
“It is not money I want,” explained the angel. “But I must be paid. I must have some of your health, good woman. I must have a great deal of your time, your energy, your comfort, much of your peace of mind, and a great big portion of your heart.”
Without a moment of hesitation the waiting woman handed over all these priceless things. The angel disappeared behind the door of life, to reappear with the wiggling bundle. Eagerly, almost violently the woman clutched him in her feeble arms, thanked the angel. As the woman turned to leave, the angel gently placed on her head a crown. The woman expressed surprise.
“This is my gift to you,” explained the angel. “This is the crown of motherhood. This is your reward for the many things you have given up.”
The crown of motherhood. We set aside the second Sunday in May to place it upon the head of everyone living or dead who has given life to another. Most mothers are too busy to wear this crown every day. Most mothers do not want continual praise and attention. But every mother appreciates at least an annual expression of our love and gratitude. So much more sincere it must be. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers!

Frances Ribich
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. Our branch has selected Its charter member Mrs. Prances Ribich as “The Mother of the Year.” Frances Ribich, born in Nova-Štifta near Gomjigrad, came to America and to Sheboygan in May 1911. She married Prank Ribich on October
13,	1913. Their 55th wedding anniversary was celebrated last year .
Mrs. Ribich is the mother of five children. Frances (Mrs. Rudolph F. Mahler), Frank, who is an attorney and a real estate developer, with his own subdivision "Ribich Pine View Heights” in suburban Sheboygan, Hermine (Mrs. James W. Grasse), Diana (Mrs. David H. Bachman) and Tennle at home.
Frances Ribich is deeply interested in society work. She held the office of treasurer with the Queen of May Society for 23 years and also served as treasurer for several years with our own branch. She is a devoted mother, “a wonderful wife” says her hu,sband Frank, and a sincere friend. Her daughter Frances and several grandchildren are members of our branch.
She enjoys good health and still does a lot of baking —potica being her specialty — and also crochets many lovely things.
To our Frances and to the entire family we extend our bast wishes for good health, happiness and God’s blessings.	Marie	Prlsland
MRS. WODISHEK

They were married Nov. 7, 1935 and this year will celebrate their 34th wedding anniversary. Ann's birthday is April 30th and the family home it at 809 East C St.
She is a regular and diligent member of our branch who attends meetings and was auditor for 9 years. Her two sisters are also active members. Another sister, Elizabeth Prija-tel died in January.
We are proud of Ann, who is loyal to her SlovenianAmerican ancestry and thankful for her interest in all our functions. With respect and admiration, we extend our sincere congratulations and wish her many more years with us.	Anna	Pachak

Jurančič made a return visit to their homeland in Slovenia a few years ago. Mrs. Luzar comes from Vas Crni Vrh, Polhov Gradec where she was born Nov. 30, 1895. She married Gregor Luzar on April 15, 1922 and the family home it at 725 N. Haugh St.
Their two daughters, Mary and Leona, are married to brothers and both are members of Branch 5. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren complete the family.
Mrs. Luzar is a good cook — rather famous for her specialties and she often supplies goodies for the meetings. Our fondest wishes for a Happy Mother’s Day!
Jennie Gerbeck
No. 6, Barberton, Ohio. Our Mother of the Year is Jennie Gerbeck. Her birthday is Dec. 24, 1912 and she was married Nov. 23, 1939. She and her husband Fred have two children, who are seen on this photo taken at the time of their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Son Fred. Jr. finished one tour of duty in Vietnam and is currently stationed at Vanderberg Air Force Base in California. Daughter, Angela is single and with her

No. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — The members have chosen as their most worthy Mother of the Year, Mrs. Ann Wodishek. Her happiest moments and most enjoyable occupation are right in her own home, making po-ticas and other good things for her family. The Wodisheks, Ann and Tony, have three children, Robert L„

MRS. KOKALJ
mother, Jennie, is a loyal member of Sacred Heart Church Senior Choir and active in church social affairs. Angela is employed in the office of the “World's Largest Grower and Propagator of Chrysanthemums-,” the Yoder Bros., Inc. in Barberton.
Mrs. Gerbeck’s hobbies include sewing, crochet and baking. During the current year, the family will celebrate their parents’ 30th Wedding Anniversary in the fall. Jennie’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Rozman, Sr. will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary also in the fall. Mrs. Jennie Rozman is a proud and longtime member of Br. G and just celebrated her 75th birthday 011 Mar. 5th.
Our Mother of the Year has been and is presently auditor of the branch. She was awarded top prize as best Reporter many years ago when the Br. 6 Drill Team was in the spotlight.

Mary Kokalj
No. 12, Milwaukee, WIs. — This chosen Mother has membership in the Slovenian Women's Union dating back to Nov. 22, 1927, making her one of the first members enrolled. She came to America shortly before then, in 1923, coming directly to Milwaukee. To weeks later, she was married to John Kokalj and became the mother of a nice, large family.
Their 7 children are John, Mary, Anne, Anthony, Frances, Prank and Bernice. From this have come 21 grandchildren.
Just visiting all the grandchildren keeps Mrs. Kokalj busy, besides which she loves to sew and bake and keep her home cheerful. The 48th Wedding Anniversary of the elder Kokaljs was a very memorable occasion for all of them, especially since later that year, Mr. Kokalj passed away.
Three daughters and three granddaughters all belong to Br. 12. Mrs. Kokalj has never held office but has been a loyal member throughout.
She resides at 2457 S. Graham St. and oiir very best wishes to her for a long and happy lifetime.
Agnes Lovrin
No. 13, San Francisco, Calif. Our
Mother of the Year Agnes (Yudnich) Lovrin is no stranger to our membership. Agnes is always there with a Povatica or some goodies when we have our Social Nights and with Ag comes her entire family. Son, Edward 11111s our games and without him our treasurer would suffer badly. Peter and Agnes have lived on “Kranjski Hrib’’ their entire married life; their children were all born on the Hill. Daughter Margie and her husband lives a few doors from Mom so of course Grandma and Grandpa spend a great time in the company of their precious grandson, Eric. And what a doll that little boy is with his red hair just like grandpa! Son, Ken just returned from the service. To say a family finds happiness in unity proves true with this lovely family. Ag’s brother, Joe, is the backbone of the Slovenian Hall; he too is always present when help is needed and needless to say it is needed often.
Agnes has many hobbies, cooking one of her best. Crochet work and embroidery are a real pastime. Most of her social functions would lack that certain something if Ag didn’t bring one of her special dishes. Many of her lovely pillow cases with her own hand-work have found themselves among our gifts when we have a night of Games. It is such a pleasure to spend time in Ag’s company as she laughs often and really knows how to enjoy	life.	A good	time	is
assured when	she is around.	All	of
the folks on "Kranjski Hrib” consider Ag a real friend. Her warm personality and her friendliness have endeared her to our hearts, it is a real pleasure to have her as our MOTHER for 1969	Fran	Chlodo
Vera Bajec
No. 14. Cleveland, Ohio. — Mother of the Year Vera	Bajec, is	an all-
around officer	and	member.	She	is
the secetary of Branch 14 in her third year and regular reporter of the branch’s doings in Zarja.
With the newly formed Dawn Choral Ohroup, Vera is a charter member and very active in all their events. She is an enthusiastic Binger you can be sure.
MRS. BAJEC
Mother Vera was born Nov. 25, 1913 at Cleveland, Ohio where she has resided all her life. She married Joseph Bajec on Feb. 6, 1932 and they have 3 children, sons, Joseph Robert and Dennis William and daughter, Marcia Marie. There are 7 grandchildren, G girls and a boy. The Bajec home it at 19G13 Chickasaw. Ave. Her work with the branch is very much appreciated and she has the loving respect of all her sister members. Felicitations!
Rose Salakar
No. 16, So. Chicago, III. — Mother Rose Salakar is one of those ideal members of a branch, participating in all affairs and attending meetings regularly besides doing her duty as recording secretary or financial secretary very well. She has held both offices for a number of years.
Rose was born in Chicago and celebrates each year on Nov. 9th. She married her husband, John, now deceased, on May 22, 1929. They became the parents of a son, Thomas and daughter Mary Ann. Rose a-dores her two grandchildren, Jeffrey and Julia Ann Salakar and is looking forward to a big event this September when her daughter Mary Ann marries Thomas Schroeder.
Rose does clerical work at the Famous Feature Pattern Co. and when at home, at 10217 Avenue M. she loves to cook and bake. An evening card game with her friends is another source of enjoyment.

Daughter Mary Ann is an S.W.U. Scholarship recipient in 1966 and is presently majoring in Education at DePaul University. She is a member of Alpha Delta Lambda, National Honor Society for Women and Delta Epsilon Sigma, a Catholic National Honor Society. Needless to say, Mother Rose is proud and happy at her daughter’s scholastic achievements.
A hearty wish to her for a happy observance of the Day and a lifetime of wonderful Mother’s Days in the future.
Josephine Paucek
No. 17, West Allis, Wis. — "She is a charter member of Branch 17 and active in all branch events during all these years” — this is the fine testimonial given to member and Mother of the Year, Josephine Paucek by her sister members. Being active means many sacrifices and Mrs. Paucek has been most willing to make them.
She is the widow of Joseph Paucek whom she married Oct. 11, 1913. Their 6 children are Rudolph, Joseph, Edward, Ralph, Genevieve Ward and Lillian -Hartman. With 12 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, Mrs. Paucek is constantly on the go —• visiting and spending time with her children and their families.
She was born on Nov. 11, 1895 at Sela, Trebelno in Slovenia and came to America in 1911. Those were the good old days when altho life was hard, families knew the meaning of togetherness.
Mrs. Paucek has many hobbies, a-mong them, cards, bowling, traveling, sewing, crocheting and as a spectator to sports events, such as the S.W.U. Bowling Tournaments which she attends. Being pleasant and cooperative is her nature and the members love her for it. Her sister, Rose Bizjak Ustar recently passed away and she, too, was a charter member of Br. 17, residing In Fontana, Calif, in her later years. They are seen together on the accompanying picture. Emma Nosse
No. 20, Joliet, III. — Emma Nosse, the Mother of the Yead of Branch 20 is an outstanding mother. She lost her first child but then adopted three, two boys and one daughter. The oldest, Gary, Is a student at Catholic High while Lynne and Wayne are students at our parochial school of St. Joseph. Pretty Lynne was one of the entertainers at our 40th anniversary banquet last fall, playing the organ with Janice Ruth and both dressed in national costume.
Mrs. Nosse is one of the best of our members; she has been a member since 1935 and for the past two years, an officer of the branch. She also attended the Illinois-Indiana State Convention last fall and we know her to be very co-operative and friendly.
She resides at 1416 N. Center SI. and was married April 2I8, 1931 to Joseph Nosse. Her birthday Is March 2, 1911 and So. Wilmington, III., is her birthplace.
Mrs. Nosse, to you our best wishes for a happy reign and year full of blessings and contentment.
Josephine Erjavec
Theresa Kozuh
No. 21, Cleveland, Ohio. — Twelve grandchildren come with hugs and kisses to see grandma Theresa Kozuh at her home at 1311 Astor Ave. on Cleveland’s west side and one little great-grandson is the apple of her eye! But, as Mother of the Year she is known for other things at Branch 21 and among them is the fact that she is a member 36 years and has served as auditor for 35! She attends the meetings and has enrolled 21 new members through the years.
At home, Mxs. Kozuh and her husband of 43 years, Lawrence, have happy memories. They recall, for instance, her arrival in America, a new

bride who was separated from her husband for over a year and then welcomed by him at her new home in America. Here were her five brothers, three of whom she had not seen in 20 years and two sisters. What a happy reunion!
The family is a source of pride to mother Theresa, too. Three grandsons are attending college, the oldest, Larry Pfeil, will be a dentist next year. Granddaughter, Kareli Kozuh has been a school teacher for 4 years.

Mary It ah or
No. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. This month many gardens will begin blooming and among the nicest will be that of Mary Bahor, Mother of the Year of Branch 26 who loves her garden and taking care of flowers. Otherwise, she enjoys homemaklng pastimes sucli as knitting, crocheting and sewing. Traveling to far-off places such as Europe and in this country, to the west and south, are also her favor ites. Her son, Edward resides in Durham, No. Carolina and daughter, Rose Marie lives in Phoenix, Arizona, so she has places to visit often.
The Bahor home at 601 Kendall St., is where the memories linger. Mary and her husband, Michael were married June 28, 1922, two years after she came to America from her native Slovenia. Her birthday is May 22, 1900. They have their eldest son, Frank, living nearby with his family, while Edward and Rose Marie are Oar away and a third son, Anthony is deceased. Son, Frank is the director of tho Slovenian Octet of Pittsburgh and also teaches a group of children to sing in their native Slovenian language. His twin sons, Bruce and Brian, are on this photo with grandma.

branch for the past 8 years and previously held office as secretary and vice president. She also has enrolled quite a few new members. All the best to her and love from her siser-members.
Agnes La Mutli
No. 28, Calumet, Mich. — Another faithful member is being remembered this Mother’s Day by her sister members and she is Agnes La Muth of Calumet. She is a native of that city in the Copper Country and celebrates on Jan. 6th, this year was her 81st birthday! Her husband, John whom she married in 1904, is deceased as are two of her seven children. The family consists of sons, John, Adolph, Ralph — all three of whom served in the armed forces and two daughters, Mollie and Clarice who was in the Waves. Presently there are five grandchildren to make her happy. She resides at 4344 Elm St.
Mrs. La Muth makes all kinds of novelties — loves her handwork and is an expert at knitting, crocheting and is a very good cook and gardener. You can imagine the feast she prepares for family reunions and on special holidays such as Mother's Day!
She has been a faithful member for 38 years! And, besides this is a regular at meetings and generously donates to all projects. Happiness and God's blessing for many more years!
Mary Drobnick
No. 32, Euclid, Ohio. — A smiling, happy woman is Mary Drobnick, who is on every committee and active In everything going on at Branch 32. She is a member of the Dawn Choral Group in Cleveland and this, too, keeps her busy with weekly rehearsals. The branch meetings are times when she not only attends and serves as auditor but she brings delicious apple strudels for their socials and brings in new members, too. She is ft 30 year member of “Ženska Zveza” and formerly was vice-president of the branch for 4 years.
MRS. LAMUTH
The Drobnick's will celebrate their 42nd Wedding Anniversary on Nov. 23rd. She and Frank have two sons, Robert	and	James	and four	grand-
children. They live at 23001 Ivan Ave.
Mary	was born in	Ely, Minn,	where
her 85	year	old mother, Mrs.	Mary
Mrack, still lives. Mary tries to visit her every year and enjoys this very much.	She	spent	Christmas	there
last year, too.
When time permits she enjoys gardening, baking and playing cards with lady friends. She is a happy person whom everyone loves and our best to her — with all honor and respect this special day.
Florence M. Burger
No. 33, Duluth, Minn. — Florence Burger has given much to branch 33 by her wonderful co-operation at all times. There never is a thing she wron’t do to help, if she is able. Not only for the organization, but she contributes much of her time to church and school. Her daughter, Deborah, plays the organ at church and her husband Ed, with his brother, Frank, operate Burger Bros. Meats and Groceries, a well-established place that has served the people of our locality for many years.
The family resides at llll-103rd Ave. West. Four children are all junior members of the branch, including Christine, Deborah, Terry and Tracy.
Ed and Florence had a student from Brazil, Carmen Perez, staying with them on the Foreign Exchange Program. They also enjoy camping and traveling.
July 23, 1930 is her birthday and Aug. 18, 1948 the date of their wedding. They are interested in everything going on around them and par-tcipate in most sports and scout programs. Florence even teaches the Girl Scouts besides her interests in sewing, bicycling and recently, has undertaken junior activities for Br. 33. She is the assistant reporter for Duluth news in Zarja, too.

Julia Lilya
No. 14, Soudan, Minn. — Chosen Mother of Br. 14 is the mother of 5 children and all four of her sons served in the armed forces. William, in the Navy, John in the Army, Richard a mechanic in the Air Force and another Anny man, Paul.
Their only daughter, Rosemary is Mrs. Ronald Pecha and with her family of 5 children recently moved to Soudan from Minneapolis. Her husband is a bricklayer.
Mrs. Lilya lost her husband after a sudden heart attack in I960. Up to the time of his death he was shop foreman at the Soudan Mine which since then has closed permanently and is now a tourist attration as a state park.
Mother of the Year was born on Sept. 28th 1903 in Soudan and it was there she was married in 1929. She has most of her 13 grandchildren nearby and they admire grandma’s beautiful garden of flowers.

Angeline M. Karish
No. 39, Biwabik, Minn. — Nothing much goes on at Br. 39 without Angie Karish there! Angie has served as an officer since she joined 19 years ago and currently is recording secretary and reporter. She is energetic and enthusiastic about all their doings because she loves people and working in harmony with a nice group. Her interests also include flowers, decorations and working with children. She is a teacher’s aid at a local school.
Angie was born in Eveleth April
27,	1911. Her maiden name is Anzelc. She married Louis Karish on Sept.
14,	1929 and he is sadly missed by all since his death in 19G6. Their 3 children are Dr. Louis Karish, who has three children, daughter Marlyn, a mother of 2 boys and 2 girls and another son, Kenneth, not married yet.
She is a real working mother with a heart of gold. Her sister members send loving regards.
Louise Mahnic
No. 40, Lorain, O.— When Mrs. Mahnic came to the United States in 1920, from her native Vas Griža in Trieste, the trip took 21 days by steamer. She was born on May 17, 1888 and this month will be 81 years young.
Louise Oral married Frank Mahnic in the year 1912. They had 3 children, namely Anne DeLillo, Frank L. Jr., and Dorothy Karpinski. She is grandma to G boys including a set of twins, Frank and Bob Mahnic.
Mr. Mahnic died in 1937 but Mrs. Mahnic keeps their home at 172'6 E. 33rd St., Lorain, cheerful and happy. She enjoys gardening and watching soap operas on television.
Daughter Anne is a supervisor at Diskey Discount St., and is a member of Br. 40 for many years, in fact, was a "Frances Bresak Cadet" at one time. Frank Mahnic, general foreman at IT. S. Steel, is a gradu-
ate of Cleveland State Univ. and last year was chosen as U. S. Steel Management “Man of the Year”. Dorothy Karpinski is employed at Hig-bees at Midway Mall.
Grandson Joseph F. DeLillio will receive his B. S. degree in Zoology from the Univ. of Cincinnati and grandson Donald Karpinski will graduate from Admiral King High School this year.
Mrs. Mahnic has been a member of Branch 40 for 33 years and has held office on audit committee for 25 years; also, was recording secretary until her resignation because of ill health. She is one of the dearest and sweetest members and is wished loads of happiness on this special day.
Antonia Kastelic
No. 42, Maple Hgts., O. The community of Maple Hgts. has been her home for many years, in fact, since she came to America in 1920 and it is certain that Mrs. Antonia Kastelic could tell an interesting story a-bout the old days there and how they’ve changed. She was born at Senjernes near Novo Mesto in Slo^ venia on May 24, 1902 and came here as a young girl 18 years old. She married Louis Kastelic on Nov.
28,	1922 and on Thanksgiving Day in 1968 she and her husband celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
Their 4 children are Robert, Joseph, Bernadette (Rudolph) and Louis. 18 grandchildren complete the family.

Among Mrs. Kastelic’s favorite things are the hours spent with her grandchildren as their beloved babysitter and she often combines this task with crocheting.
For many years in the beginning of Br. 42, she was recording secretary and she is currently in her third term as president. She has brought in many new members and has helped many ways to raise funds and keep activities going. To her, on this day, special greetings and wishes from her many friends and sisters in the Slovenian Women’s Union.
Elizabeth (Elsie) Gallun
No. 43, Milwaukee, Wis. Elizabeth, a member of the Stariha family, came into this world on March 26, 1919 in West Allis. She has spent all her life in the Milwaukee area and now resides at 3168 S. 41st., with her husband, Edward Gallun and family. There are 4 daughters and a son in the family, namely Rosalind Larosa. Cynthia Winke, Margie, Betty and Ronald Gallun, and 4 grandchildren, too. One of them is a brand new baby girl, born to her son and daughter-in-law on Jan. 24th. Tlie memorable wedding of Cynthia, also in January, was reported in a recent issue of Zarja.
Elsie enjoys active sports such as bowling and swimming and does sewing for a pastime.
She is active whenever possible and donates prizes, etc., for the branch’s doings. She helps, too, at all social events.

Josephine Prebil
No. 46, St. Louis, Mo. — Mrs. Josephine Prebil was chosen as Mother of the Year. She Is a charter member and held office for 30 years. Mrs. Prebil was born In St. Louis on July 30, 1907. She married August R. Prebil on July 30, 1932, has 3 children, Robert A., Mary Ann Harde-beck and Thomas J., and 7 grandchildren.
Both her daughter, Mary Ann, and her sister, Mary Moenigmann are also members of Branch 46.
Mrs. Prebil’s mother, the late Mrs. Josephine Speck was the organizer of the branch and Josephine herself is a 30 year officer.
Embroidering and quilting are her favorite pastimes, both take excep-tinal patience and artistry.
Ix>ve and admiration are hand-in-hand wishes to Mrs. Prebil on this happy occasion.
Marie Ažman
No. 50, Cleveland, O. Marie Ažman is a true “aristocrat” of the Slovenian nationality. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Louis Prijatel, well-known Slovenians who operated a lood store on St. Clair Ave. and E. 62nd St., and are now retired.
Her mother was Mary Kmet of the pioneer Kmet family on Shade Ave.
Marie and her husband, Louis, just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in December. Lou is the son of the famous Azman family Meat Market at Addison Rd. and St. Clair.
Marie was blessed with a boy, Louis, now 12 years old who has been featured in many of our SWIT activities playing his accorditan.
This young matron has lived In the bustling Slovenian community on St. Clair all her life, attended St. Vitus School and is a graduate of Jane Adams High School. She is a stunning woman and very pleasant to know. Her hobbies include sewing and collecting antiques.
With our branch, she is a member of the Marie Prisland Cadets and participates in all our activities. She is also an avid worker at St. Vitus school and church. Having this kind of member is a perfect example of the ideal — we wish her continued luck and success in all her interests and that she will remain with us forever! We love her.	F.	S.
Margaret V ogor els
No. 52, Kitzville, Minn. — The day
Margaret and Tony Pogorels got married 11 years ago, they had 7 children. Tony had lost his first wife in sickness and Margaret liad other misfortune; both of them with lives filled with trials and burdens.
They are a happy family that keeps our chosen Mother busy. But, she says, she enjoys her big family and would not have it any other way!
Tony’s 3 boys boys, Jan, Terry and Tim, and Margaret's 3 boys and a girl, Frank, Richard, Warren and Carolyn are most all grown, while Tony, Jr. is their youngest addition to the family. Frank is in the army, Carolyn is married with two darling little boys, and between all the rest are good students and hockey players, especially Richard, Warren, Tim and Tony, Jr. Son, Jan is 20 years old and attending college in his second year of dentistry. Richard is In his first year of college, Warren is the 10th grade, Terry is a very good student of the 8th grade as is Tim and Tony Jr. is third grader.
From this run-down, one can understand why one of Margaret’s most frequent pastimes is going to hockey games. Four of the boys play in different leagues! She also loves to go fishing with her boys and join them in all their activities.
Her birthday is April 27th and she was born in Kitzville in the year 1930. This year on January 24, Tony and Margaret celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.
Motherhood means many things and her sisters at Br. 52 admire and respect her as a living example of its highest ideals.
Mary Bradish
No. 55, Girard, O. — A small girl named Mary Turk came to America with her parents from Vrhnika, Slovenia in 1928 and they made their
new home in Niles, Ohio. There she grew up and on June 1, 1940 she married Edward Bradish with whom she has made her home at Gault Rd., In No. Jackson, Ohio.
Mary was blessed with 6 daughters, Mary Ellen Ceplice, Maxine Knowles, Kathy, Bernadette, Jacquelyn and Eileen. She has one grandson, Philip Ceplice.
She is a fine homemaker and loves her garden and to sew during her leisure time. She is a member of the school PTA and is also active at St. James church.
In June, she and Ed will celebrate their 29th wedding anniversary which the family will celebrate together.
Fondest wishes to her, her husband and girls. May they remain a happy, healthy family and continue to shower love and affection on their mother.
Anne B. Satovich
No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. An exellent organizer is Anne B. Satovich, president of Br. 56 for the past 13 years. Before that she served as vice-president, reporter and financial secretary.
Anne takes great interest in her branch and its welfare. She loves people, therefore, the members are all her prime concern.
Anne is the mother of a son and a daughter, Francis and Barbara. Both are married and have degrees in secondary education. There are 3 grandchildren that she considers her pride and joy! When time permits, she loves many and various hobbies including fishing, gardening, knitting, reading, playing cards and does art-craft in ceramics. She Is also an avid traveler.
Anne and her husband, Frank live at 3414 — 4th Ave., W. They were married 34 years ago this month, on May 4, 1935. She celebrates her birthday on April 5th each year since 1911.

Virginia’s two daughters, Nancy, age 18 and Patricia, age 13, are members too. They are seen on the photo with their mom.
Her birthday Is Jan. 14, 1922 and the date they celebrate for wedding anniversaries with husband, George Is July 3. This year will be their 21st year together.
The family home Is at 70 Chestnut St., In Girard where she Is very busy and loves to sew during her leisure hours. She was very active with the branch until Z years ago when she suffered a stroke but still attends meetings regularly. Love and affection to our Mother of the Year!
Cecelia Brown
No. 63, Denver, Col'o. Mother of two sons was chosen from the branch at Denver to represent the ladies there. Cecelia was born on Nov. 23, 1901 right at Denver and she was married to George J. Brown on Sept. 1, 1923; he is now deceased.
Her two boys are Roland and Arnold and there are 3 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She loves to crochet and go fishing, in the beautiful Colorado mountain streams. The members appreciate her interest in the branch and wish her a very happy Mother’s Day!
Frances Vile
No. 68, Fairport Harbor, Ohio. —
This month will be a special one at the home of Frances and Edward Ulle. Their daughter, Mary Anne will be married on May 31st.
The Ulle family, besides Mary Anne there are two sons, Edward and David, reside at 150 Charlotte St., in Painesville. Edward and Frances were married July 27, 1946 and they enjoy many activities as a family, with golf and bowling their favorites.
Frances has held numerous offices
with the branch, presently is the recording secretary, reporter and auditor. Her birthday is Aug. 16, 1914.

Johana Xnsek
No. 71, Strabane, Pa. Mother of the Year for 19G9 from Strabane is a very good person who always goes to church and is good to her family. She was a conscientious nurse to her invalid husband until God called him to eternity a year or so ago. She always attends the branch’s meetings and helps when called upon. This makes her a very much appreciated member and beloved sister.
Johana Zuzek was born in Austria on Oct. 1889. She married her husband John on Feb. 3, 1913. They had 5 children, 2 of whom are deceased. Emma Tozser and Frank and Edward Zuzek are her family. Also, she has 5 grandchildren.
She loves her kitchen work and to cook and bake in which she excells. Heartiest wishes for a long and happy lifetime.

Kay Yuratovac

73 Is none other than Kay Yuratovac, their president for 8 years. Kay joined the	S.W.U.	in 1949	and	has
always been an active, co-operative member. As president, the branch has gone progressively ahead and all the members attribute much of its success to	their fine president.
She was	born on	Jan. 2,	1919	and
became the bride of Peter Yuratovac on May 17, 1941 so this month it’s their 28th anniversary. They have Z children, Robert, Madelyn and Annette and live at 19511 Sumpter Rd. in Warrensville.
Kay is also active at her local parish of St. Wenceslaus and has many friends in the community.

Elisabeth Potelz
No. 77, N. S. Pittsburgh, Pa. — In
the early years of Br. 77, chosen mother Elizabeth Greacher Potetz was treasurer and since then, she has kept an active part in all their events. The members are very thankful to her and want to bestow this honor as their expression of admiration and respect.
Mrs. Potetz was born Dec, 25, 1909 in Slovenia. When she came to America she was just 3 three years old. She grew up and soon, at the ago of 22 years, she married Edmund Potetz and they have one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Fleig who resides now in Buffalo, N. Y. with her three children, Terrie, 12Vi years, Dennis Michael, 10 and Kathy Ann, age 5.
She loves to do intricate needlework such as applique work on quilts, crocheting bedspreads, tablecloths or afghans. This requires lots of patience and fortitude which she has in abundance!

Mother Elizabeth has held office in two church societies In her commnity and so, has a large circle of friends at St. Mary's church. She and her husband celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary this year.

Ann Maurin
No. 86, Nashwauk, Minn. One way
to make a new officer happy is to select her to be Mother of the Year! That’s what the members at Br. 8fi have done. Their chosen mother is Ann Maurin, first term auditor. Congratulations!
Ann Maurin was born on August 22, 1910 in Minnesota. She has four children: Katherine ,an Army nurse, Patrick, married and living in Minneapolis, Judy Mrs. (John) Briski of Richfield, Minn, and Margaret Lozen-ski of Minnesota, Minn. She lost her husband, George just a year ago after a marriage of 28 years.
Ann loves gardening, cooking and baking. She visits her children and grandchildren often in Minneapolis. They are Peter John and Lara Margaret Briski.

Honorine Corpus No. 89, Oglesby, III.— Frank and Honorine Corpus celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on March 1st. They are the parents of two children, a son Father Roger Corpus, O.S.B. and daughter, Mrs. Charlene Bekelski. To make them even more happy and thankful to God for family blessings, there are 5 grandchildren. Carmen Marie, Cynthia, Shawn, Ronada Kay and Rena Lee.
And, her favorite pastime? Babysitting!
Mrs. Corpus is the auditor of Br. 89 and very well-liked by all the members. They wish her happiness on all the days of the year, including her birthday, Nov. 9, (1910) and this year especially on Mother’s Day. The Corpus home is at 603 Peoria St. in Peru.
Barbara Sambol
No. 95, So. Chicago, III. The members of our branch proudly named Mrs. Barbara Sambol, nee Gršich, who lives at 9334 Muskegon Avenue as our Mother of the Year. She was born April 26, 1906 in Žakanja, Slo-vania, married John Sambol on Oct. 9,	1922	in	Sveta Marija Žakanja
church and came to this country on May 16, 1929. She Is the mother of two boys, Joe and Zvonimir, who was killed in action in World War II. Grandmother of three, Barbara gets a genuine pleasure from them, and openly delgihts in their presence, as you can see in the photograph. No grandmother was ever prouder — or happier to share the spotlight with her grandchildren.
Gardening is one of her hobbies, and so are crocheting and cooking! “She is a gourmet!” She stresses and believes that the most important ability of a homemaker is dedication to her family and the ability to accomplish daily tasks in a spirit of love and service.

Frances M. Guerrieri
No. 92. Crested Butte, Colo. The
history of mountainous Colorado, up near Crested Butte, is full af adventure and colorful times. Frances Per-ri Guerrieri was born at Cokedale, Colo, on Dec. 26, 1915 and lived thru much of that exciting history herself.
She is the mother of 3, Charles, Marie and Albert and with her husband Oasper, has 4 grandchildren. On Jan. 24th, it was their 37th wedding anniversary. On the accompanying photo, she and her husband pose with the elder Perris. They live on W. Tomichi St. in Gunnison.
Mrs. Guerrieri keeps herself busy at home and mostly in the kitchen at that, where she loves to cook — or, out doing club-work. She was treasurer of the branch for some years and is interested and active in all their functions.
When the members get together, either at Crested Butte or Gunnison, Frances tries to be there, helping along and being a good member. She is truly a wonderful mother to be chosen for 1969!

went a very serious operation which resulted a touch-and-go situation, but her religious faith gave her the strength to survive and carry on. Through the years she has demonstrated her ability by a down-to-earth attitude, and many very generous contributions to our church. Her most important quality is her absolute fairness.
She is active at Sacred Heart parish, and other organizations. No other woman has enjoyed a finer reputation than Barbara.
The membership has a deep respect and warm affection for her and consider it an honor to have her and call her our own. I congratulate you, Barbara, on behalf of the entire membership, and wish you a long life, happiness, good health for you and your family for the rest of your days. Frances Vidergar
No. 100, Fontana, Calif. — Frances Vidergar was bom in Cleveland, O., on June 8, 1917. She married Anthony J. Vidergar, Jr., on July 4, 1940 and now	they	hake	their home	in
sunny California at 8322 Juniper Ave., Fontana.	They will	be married	2$
years in July.
They have a son, Dennis and daughter, Loretta. Dennis sang in Disneyland and	was	made	1st Vice-Presi-
dent of Junior Achievement. The Vidergars	also	have	a grandson	of
whom they are very proud.
Frances loves to go bowling and dancing and to sing. She leads a very enjoyable social life.
She is the recording secretary of the branch now and has served many years in many capacities. All honor and blessings to her on this happy occasion!
Barbara Orlosky
No. 101, Bedford Hgts., O. Barbara is a lovely member of the branch and is “is always there when needed.” She is very active and conscientious. She served as vice-president for 3 years and for the past 2 years, has been chairman of their annual card party, making each one a huge success.
Barbara is a mother of two, daughter Barbara and son John. Sho likes to watch her boy playing football, to go bowling and dancing.
Her birthday is Dec 3, 1925 and her home is at 5897 Lehman Drive where she makes a happy home for her husband, John and children. She and John were married Nov. 21, 1942.

Mary Koscak
No. 102, Willard, Wis. — Everyone in Willard lives on a farm and it’s the same for Mother of the Year, Mary Koscak. She and her husband, Frank live with their family on Rt. 1, near town, where she co-operates with the branch’s social functions at their new and beautiful church. This summer, they will host the Wisconsin State Convention in Willard, so it means even more activity for Mary and her sisters at Branch 102.
The Koscak family consists of 5 children. Jacqueline is Sister M. John, also Francis, John, Linda and Steven. They help mother observe her Nov. 10th (1915) birthday each year as well as mom and dad's wedding anniversary each August 10th since 1946.
Mary is vice-president of the branch for the past 5 years. She loves to take care of her flowers, reading and bird-watching right from her home.
The members join in a very affectionate wish for happiness and long life to Mary.
Mary Mejac
No. 103, Washington, D. C. Mary is called Mimi by all her friends. She is right in the midst of all the branch’s functions as their secretary since the branch was formed in 19G5. They have a busy yearly program, so that means Mimi is a busy gal!
At home, she is the mother of 3 wonderful children, Helen, age 11,
Peter, age 9, and Maria, age 7. She and her husband, Conrad, have made their family home at 445 Butter-worth Place in NW Washington for a number of years. The whole fiamily spent two months in Europe last summer, visiting relatives in Slovenia and the birthplace of their parents; also, taking a few weeks tour of major European cities.
Mimi was born in New York where her family, the Grills, still live and she visits them frequently. Her birthday is this month on the 13th (1928) and next month, she and Conrad will celebrate their lGth wedding anniversary on June 6th.
To this fine young woman, a den mother for the Cub scouts, a collector of recipes, an avid reader, and certainly the greatest wife and mother, the branch extends their fondest felicitations. Happy Mother’s Day and Every Day, Mimi!
Anne C. McGee
No. 105, Detroit, Mich. An active member of No. 105 Is Anne C. McGee who was unanimously elected as Mother of the Year for 19C9.
She was bom in Calumet, Michigan and was married to the late Dr. George A. McGee. Anne has one son, John Samuel, who served in the armed forces, one year in the states and two in Germany. He now works in the field of aeronautics, has a pilot’s license and lives in Farmington, Mich, with his family.
Besides her Detroit home, Anne maintains a summer place in Canada, facing Lake Erie where (lie Club members have enjoyed many Sunday outings.
Gall Simon, a former Mother of the Year, is Ann's sister.

SUPREME PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear Members:
Congratulations on the 40th Anniversary of Br. 30, Aurora, 111., organized January 5, 1929 by Frances Kranjc and to Br. 59, Burgettstown, Pa. on their 35th Anniversary. They were organized May 10, 1934 by Josephine Pintiar and Frances Pauchnik.
Supreme Board meeting for the year was held March 17-18 at the Home Office in Chicago. All bonds and books were carefully audited and found in perfect order.
Mrs. Marie Prisland is still investing our money into sound investments and into higher interest rates. Transaction that was done in two days the Board Meeting I will not report, but you will find all details in the Minutes of the Meeting in the June issue of Zarja. Calling all branches to help your State President be the winner and also build up your membership by getting new members. Your State President in your district will appreciate all the help they can get from you.
FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA: Have you read the new book? I enjoyed it so much because the history of persons and settlements was short and concise. It belongs in each and every Slovenian home especially for the children who are attending high school or college. It’s a PERFECT GRADUATION PRESENT. Order it now as graduation is only a few weeks away.
CHAPEL FUND: At the Board of Directors meeting, the Sloveian Chapel Fund was reported and financial statement explained. The S.W.U. will also subscribe to the fund and we are hopeful that it will soon be concluded successfully. Our branches are again responding beautifully by sending in donations and the recent tally shows $490.00 given as follows:
Br. 25, Cleveland, Mary Otoničar collected from individ-
ual donors: $268.00, so to date she has collected $1,270.00.
Br. 13, San Francisco, Cal., Rose Scoff, donated $100.00 in memory of her son, Joseph and the branch has given $20.00 in memory of Joseph Scoff and Frances Confetti.
From Soudan, Minn., Br. 34, we received $35.00 from Barbara Yapel and from. Br. 23, Ely, Minn, a donation of $15.00. Branches in Cleveland as follows: Br. 10, Mary Komidar collected $12.00 and Br. 15, $5.00.

The beautiful month of May is here and with it comes the special day on May 11th honoring all mothers. To them, I wish a very happy day and best of all wishes and especially to my own mother. Happy birthday to all celebrating this month and a speedy recovery to all ailing .

ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. The officers were pleased to see so many ladies present at our March meeting, to hear our member, Alderman Elsie Braeger speak on local government administration, urban redevelopment, and low cost housing for the elderly. It was very beneficial. Thank you again, Elsie, for coming.
The People to People Folk Festival was a great success. Our Slovenian booth was attractively displayed with flags and articles from Yugoslavia. Mesdames Mary Turk and Mary Udo-vich had a very interesting apple strudel demonstration which was well received. Many, many thanks to the gracious ladies who baked for this, and for their services and preparations. (See photo on Pots and Pans page.)
At our regular meeting, May 18tli, we will honor our Mother of the Year, Charter member, Mrs. Frances Uibich. The program will be in charge of Mesdames Marie Prisland and Olga Saye. The Kitchen Committee will serve refreshments. We do hope you will keep this date in mind and attend the meeting and program.
I wish to remind members who will be reaching 75 years of age, to notify the secretary. This involves the reduced assessment.

No. 2, Chicago, III. Our sincere congratulations to Mother of the Year, Luba Troha, our ever-faithful officer and member for many years. Luba is a beautiful matron with a grown family who are hard-working and industrious. She is handy with all sorts of sewing, such as aprons, costumes for our children’s events and those sweet humpty-dumpty felt dolls she fills with soft-stuff for the prizes. Our best to her and may she have a happy, long reign!
We have a big event coming up July 20th when we meet again at Lemont, 111. for Zveza Day. The members expect a large crowd and are hoping for fine weather. Co-chairmen of the day will be Albina Novak, Liz Zefran and Anna Zorko with help
by many, many members who are needed for the various jobs. We appreciate your volunteering your services for this occasion and donations of prizes for the "fishbowl” booth. Many members will be making things and we thank you all in advance.
We would like to remember those members who were ill recently and offer our heartiest wishes that they feel fine now. They are Katherine Foys, Angie Vucko, Mary Sedlasek and Maria Pecharich. Our thanks to Fannie Zibert “Sunshine Girl” for her conscientious handling of get-well cards. She personally crochets hankies to include in each card she sends on behalf of the branch.
Remember to attend the “Pete li-tanje” on Thursday evening May 8th at St. Stephen church. We will begin in church at 7:20 p. m. and after benediction, step down to the church hall for refreshments and to honor our mothers. Do attend with your children and families. It’s a lovely time for all.
Delightful half hour was spent after the April meeting when we viewed old films, beautiful in color, of historic times for the Slovenians in Chicago. The old parades, costumed ladies and gentlemen, many of whom were In the audience and could not believe how they looked way back when, and a film taken in Le-

mont in 1957, were great. We will have to do it again sometime.
Our members, too, are very pleased with the book, FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA. They were selling like hot cakes at the meeting and everyone wants one for their son or daughter. We hope each and every member of our branch will buy one.

No. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. In spite of the bad weather, our March meeting was fairly well attended by the usual interested members who help to keep our meetings alive and the business at hand discussed. To these
hardy and faithful members, I am very grateful as I am sure all are loyal officers who in spite of their own difficulties keep their meeting dates.
Sorry to hear that Mary Evanich’s husband is very ill. Do hope he recovers soon as it is not like Mary to look so sad and worried. Good luck to you both. Speedy and thorough recoveries are also wished to all our shut-ins and those in the hospital, the latest of whom is Emily Bizjak at the Deaconess Hospital. May God give you His help and comfort. Remember to report anyone ill you know as that is the only way I get to hear of it. You know, it helps to be remembered!
Our card party on March 23rd surprisingly netted us a profit. It seemed a number of people were out of town or at other socials but a few of the regulars that came did more than their share to make it a success and with the help of generous donors, namely, Mesdames Alpner, Dobnik, Ermenc, Evanich, Greisbacker, Lau-rich, Miklos, Novak, Plesko, Vidmar and Wilhelm and our good bakers, Mmes. Kratchnik and Plesko who donated good home made strudel to serve with coffee it all helped the proceeds. Such bakery always sells well as we love our Slovenian goodies. The crowd not being too large left us with a number of fine prizes for future use. Mrs. Plesko spent a whole day using her salesmanship on various business places and came up with some good prizes for future success.
Don't forget we do have the book, PROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA, written by our beloved founder, and we’re always anxious to sell. The book makes a good reference for the young as it gives a good account of what our older folks went through and what the Mother Country is like, helping to understand and take pride in our heritage. It’s a good book to leave behind for the younger generation to read.
We’re still interested in taking the trip to Our Lady of Snows Shrine on the last weekend of May.
No. 2, Chicago, III. Bowling News.
With only one month left to bowl, the Chicago S. W. U. bowling league has a new leader. In fact, the top three teams have been completely shuffled around.
As of April 1st, the new leader was Reliance Federal, which had a record of 55 wins and 32 losses. They held a four game edge over the second place team, Dr. Grill (51 wins and 36 losses). Marquette Service Station, the team that had led the league since early in the season, fell to third place with 50 wins and 37 losses. Zefran Funeral Home’s 47 wins and 40 losses left them in fourth place.
There was also a new leader in high team handicap series. Zefran’s came up with a 2832 series, which included a 1072 handicap game.
G. Schiffer took over the lead in high individual handicap series with a 693. Gloria, a 157 average bowler, had a 232 game in her 642 scratch series.
Everybody seems to be giving that little extra bit of effort these days to give the individual leaders a run for the money.
B. Kosi, our newest bowler, came up with a 543 series. A. Post, a 142 average bowler, had a 514 series, which included a 198 game. Some other outstanding series during the month were shot by G. Niedzielko (493) and M. Persa (483).
High games were also quite common last month. E. Kroschel, with a 155 average, had a 230 game. A. Vucko’s 216 game helped her get on the board with a 649 handicap series. L. Zefran, a 119 average bowler, came up with a 193 game.

We have no losers in our league, everyone was awarded cash prizes in various categories after the banquet dinner held at Merichka’s Restaurant on April 7th. Details will be published in the next report.

Happy Mother’s Day to Agnes Lovrin we say, may your year of 1969 be one of your happiest and we are proud and privileged to have one woman so kind and good represent us Br. No. 13. May God make all your troubles so small they will hide a-mong your happiness and never be noticed. With the return of son, Kenneth from the service the family Is once again a complete unit.
A broad smile will cross Ag’s face whe she is talking of her darling grandson Eric, and the lttle fellow looks up at grandma as if she is his WORLD and of course grandma feels the same way. It Is so cute to see what a real happiness this family finds in the company of one another but they still have time and love for thoir many friends.

No. 14, Euclid, O. Best Wishes to all our Mothers on their special d'ay and very special congratulations to our Secretary, Vera Bejac who was unanimously chosen as our Mother of the Year. Vera has always been a delight to work with. She’s been one of our most diligent workers and a very reliable secretary. Her extra effort and extra works have been an asset to our Branch and to the Slovenian Women’s Union in general. This award is but a small honor to give to Vera, but the members have this way of showing our deep appreciation for her kindness.
All members who have attended the meetings regularly and have participated in the socials we’ve had are reminded that on Sunday, May 25th, our Branch will use the Social’s Kitty money and dine out at Recher Hall when Klub Drustu will have their dinner. More details will be available at the meeting.
Our members were saddened to hear we have lost a dear member, Mary Gorse passed away during Holy Week. Members prayed the rosary for her. May we express our deepest sympathy to all her family.
Sincere sympathy also to Mrs. Mary Liksan who lost her husband last month, and to Mrs. Josie Centa, whose brother Vincent A. Hribar died also in March.
On our sick list we find Mrs. Oza-nich, Mrs. Poropot, and Mrs. Arko. Please get well very soon.
Remember our May meeting is on Tuesday, May G at 7:15 p. m. at Recher Ilall. Please make it a point to be there. This is one of our most joyous meetings when we honor our Mothers, Birthday celebrants, and also members who have wedding anniversaries. Hope to see you there.

No. 19, Eveleth, Minn. — Among our members we celebrated some very happy events recently and some very sad ones. Beginning with the happy news, we congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Joe Primozich on their 25th Wedding Anniversary which they celebrated early in the year. Mtb. Primozich is our member as well as her son and daughter. The Primoziches are local business people and very well respected in our community.
The John Primoziches are also celebrants and that of their 21st Wed-
ding Anniversary. They are especially happy because they became grandparents for the first time when a son was born to their son and daughter-in-law. Our fondest wishes to all.
When sad news comes, it is really most distressing. We had two of our families mourning their loved ones last month. The Nemgars grieve for their dear mother as do all the members of our branch as she was one of our first members and president for many years. Mrs. Antonia Nemgar was 84 years old at the time of her passing. Her four daughters, Julia, Antoinette, Mary and Frances and three sons, Anthony, Louis and William, 6 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren are surviving. To them, our deepest sympathy. We know that Mrs. Nemgar, for all her love and goodness, is resting in peace.

Shortly after the death of her mother, Mrs. Frances Sterle, whom we all loved and deeply ir*ss, daughter Mary Hoppa passed away at Minneapolis. She is survived also by a brother, Tony and a sister, Franoes LaDu. Mrs. Sterle died in September, lfl€8 and her daughter in March of this year. To her husband, Edward, and family our sincere condolences. (See photo).

No. 20, Joliet, 111,. My compliments to the editor of Zarja, Corinne, for the very meaningful and proper picture on the cover page of the February Zarja. The out-going leader and newly-elected President of the United States — where else but in the United States can we witness such a friendly exchange of government administrations — where else is there such sincerity in this ceremony?
The visit of our present leader, Mr. Nixon, to his predecessors, former presidents who are of the opposite party, shows us the friendly atmosphere in which they believe.
At this time we also mourn the passing of a great leader, commander and president, Dwight D. Eisenhower. There was a time when he had the fate of the world in his hands. We emerged with victory and many a son, now fathers themselves, can remember those days. Let us remember him in our prayers!
We also mourn the loss of our good member, Mary Vlasich, age 79 years of Cora St. She passed away on March 18th at St. Joseph Hospital. She came here GO years ago; was preceded in death by her husband many years ago.
She was a member of many organizations and was ill several years. She was our fourth 40 year member who passed away this year, recommended for membership by first sec. Ann Pluth. Two daughters survive her, Mrs. Catherine Pavnica and Mary Spelich. There are also many grandchildren and other relatives. Both daughters are our members as well as granddaughter Mary Catherine Denick and her daughter, Mary Le«. Our members prayed at her bier and accompanied her on her last journey. She was laid to rest in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Our condolences to the Vlasich family and may she rest in peace. Our condolences also to the Frances Liker family. She died in the hospital and is survived by a large family. Her daughter, Mary Lopynskl is our member for many years. Also to the John Gre-gorich family of Highland Ave. Our condolences to the bereaved families and may their loved ones be rewarded in heaven.
From our secretary Olga Ancel comes the report that the granddaughter of our long-time member, Barbara Kociuba became a new member. The liitle one was born in Formosa where her daddy is in the serivce as a member of the medical corps. Her mcrther’s name is Jean-nie Polnasnik, and the baby was named Heather Marie. Her great grandmother Adamic was our member before her passing 40 years ago.
At our next meeting, we will honor our popular Mother of the Year, Mrs. Emma Nosse. All members are invited to come to this special meeting where all members and mothers, will be specially honored. A door prize will alBO be given.

No. 23, Ely, Minn. The Dawn Club held their meeting in the St. Anthony’s church hall on March 9th at 7:30 p. m. with Emma Pucel presiding. We had a good attendance, but now that the weather is better we should make it even better.
Discussions and plans for our anniversary banquet which is held every month of May are being made for the banquet to be held at Vertin’s Cafe beginning with a cocktail hour at 6 P- m. with Mayme Stoll as chairman. The chairman for the entertainment committee will be Louise Seliga and her sister, Mary Evanish. The dinner will be at 6:30 p. m., and will be on May 19th.
The committee in charge for the lunch and entertainment for March meeting were Ann Merrill, Christine Grahek, Jennie Zupančič, Mayme Stoll and Ann Miklauslch.
Cards were played and prizes were given to the winners. In pinocle, Mrs. Mary Shikonya won high and Theresa Koschak, low. In Canasta, Mary Evanish won high and Mary Zgonc, low. Barbara Brennan won the attendance prize.
The lunch committee for the month of April were Julia Zgonc, Mary Tol-yon, Rose Pucel, Margaret Shuster and Mary Korent.
We all wish Margaret Deyak a speedy recovery from her surgery and that we will see her at our meeting again.
Mrs. Agnes Palcher, mother of our member, Margie Gornick passed away last week. We offer to the faimlv our deepest sympathy.

No. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. Our first meeting of the year we had 30 members present on March 18th which I think was very good. At this meeting, it was decided to give our church an Easter donation. We also discussed the luncheon and card party that is to be held on May 20th at 12):30 in the afternoon at the Slovenian Hall on 57th St. Donation will be $1.25 and all members are asked to please bring a prize. Being the luncheon is on the same day as our meeting usually is, we will collect dues but there will be no meeting in the evening.
We congratulate Mary Bahor on being nominated as Mother of the Year. Mary has been our treasurer for the past eight years. Welcome to three new members: Diane Lynn Zugell, granddaughter of Frances Zu-gell, one of our auditors, and Susan Kohler and Stella Autore.
Belated condolences to the following: Mary Skerlong and family on the loss of husband and father, Louis Skerlong. The Techman family on the loss of Emil DeKleva, brother of Amelia Techman. The Migalic family on the loss of their mother, Anna Migalic, a member for many years. May all these souls rest in peace!

tendance was marvelous except that our treasurer Annie Godlar was hospitalized having had surgery in March which prevented her from attending. We pray for her speedy recovery so that soon she will be working again for her branch as we all know how active she is. Our meeting was brief, but the president had so much to say, she	had to	talk	fast	because
time was	running	out.	You	see,	we
were all set for a program of slides from Europe scheduled for 8:30. In charge was our faithful and hard worker, Mary Drobnlck. She made it possible that we had the show. It was very beautiful. Tea, cookies and strudel were served afterward. Mrs. Drobnlck	made	the	strudel	and
lunch. Thanks to her and may God bless her.
Our president will take us out to dinner on our regular meeting day in May, on the 6th at the Ivanhoe Restaurant. We all agreed, as who cares to work all the time, right? For a change, we will treat ourselves to a dinner instead of meeting at our regular place. This will be fun! Don’t forget to come to the meeting then in June when we will have lots of doings to plan for our 40th anni-
versary in September.
May 18th Frances Gerjevic will be 80 years young. She and her husband, Frank are living 55 years at 26305 Tracy ave. Daughter, Nancy, lives with her parents. Their other daughters are Nettie Pristov, Mrs. Frank Mramor and son, Frank, Jr. They have 9 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Happy birthday to her and good health from all officers and members of Br. 32. Živijo!
The son of our secretary, Robert Comenshek was married on April 19th at St. Vitus church to Jo Ann Stinziano. Congratulations to them and God bless them.

No. 33, Duluth, Minn. A nice attendance was seen at the March meeting despite the fact that everyone was so busy with Easter preparations. Everything Is progressing very nicely for our 40th anniversary and Minnesota Zveza Day which will be held on Sept. 14th in Duluth. Booklets were distributed to the members and they will also be sent to our Minnesota branches soon. A beautiful hand-made afghan, a stainless steel knife set and a 50 pc. flat-ware set will be given away. Please try to dispose of them as the proceeds will be used to defray the expenses for this day.
Many times people like to bring a gift or a souvenir. You will be given this oppotrunity if you wish. We will have a fancy hand work book and we hope to accommodate you all.

At our May 7th meeting, all the Mothers will be honored, especially Florence Burger, our Mother of the Year. Beginning with a 6 p. m. Holy Mass which will be said by our pastor, Father Dolslna, for all living and deceased members, the meeting will follow and a program conclude. Betty Mrak and her committee will be In charge. No. 34, Soudan, Jlfinn. — A well-attended meeing, after 3 months of postponed meetings, was held on March 16 at the Parish Hall by Br. No. 34, with Mrs. John Pahula presiding. Reports on business that had transpired since the previous meeting were given by Mrs. Nick Tekautz and Mrs. Mary Pahula.
At a previous meeting the Branch had approved purchasing some new equipment for St. Martin’s Hall kitchen and Mrs. Herman Mesojedec was chairman of the committee to arange for the purchases. At the meeting she announced that 6 thermo-os coffee servers and a combination salad maker and meat grinder were purchased and these were donated for St. Martin’s Parish Hall kitchen as a gift from Branch No.34.
A letter was received from the Ely Area Association for Retarded Children inviting our Branch to become a member of the Association. Members approved the membership and dues were paid for the year.
During the social hour, cards were played and prize winners were Mmes. Joseph Stefanich, John Tekautz, Nick Tekautz and William Vollendorf.
Mrs. Mary Pahula provided the attendance prize which was awarded to Mrs. Leo Wilson. Mrs. Mary Pahula was co-hostess with Mrs. John Pahula and they served a tasty dessert to conclude the evening.
Appointed to the hostess committee for the April 16th meeting were Mmes. Ernest Johnson and Nick Tekautz, with Mrs. John Pahula to donate the door prize.
I’m sure all members of SWU are enjoying reading Mrs. Marie Pris-land's most informative and entertaining book—“From Slovenia to America.” I found it delightful reading, and it brought back nostalgic memories of our parents—stories they told us about their travels to America and the living conditions they found here at the beginning of the Century. Both are already deceased. Toni Turek’s and Mrs. Prisland’s "memories” are duplicates of my early childhood when we had the wood burning stove, no electricity or indoor plumbing etc.
I also found the book interesting to find out about well-known individuals and cities—I had no idea there were so many cities and towns throughout the United States that had so many people of Slovenian extraction living in them. Thank you, Mrs. Prisland for your work in writing such a valuable "history” of our ancestors.
May I close with a belated HAPPY EASTER wish for all SWU members and their loved ones—and to all the MOTHERS—a Happy Mother’s Day! May Our Risen Saviour bless you all!

Dear readers: With the beautiful month of May — that recalls in our minds all the nicest things of this world — flowers, love and Mother’s Day — we again come to the special issue of Zarja that is dedicated to the most precious beings, our mothers! May they all enjoy the love and affection of their families and respect of the world!
It was a visit of "love" to go back to Cleveland in March to be present at the first concert given by the choral group that carries the same name as this publication, “DAWN”. I felt It a special meaning, so as editor of The Dawn and former Clevelander, my visit was all the more enjoyable. To see the fine spirit and enthusiasm of the members of Cleveland and Euclid was fabulous! To all of singers, the committee and the various branches represented on stage and in the audience, my compliments! May you go on to greater successes and lots of “high” notes!
You will read a reminder in this issue about the appropriateness of the book FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA for gradutiation gifts. This is the best idea of the day! Our Mrs. Prisland has written the book with the youth of our families in mind. She was inspired for the book by her own grandchildren who wanted to know more about their ancestors. Isn’t it most important that we teach and educate our younger folks on just who and what our Slovenians are and have been? You will be doing everyone a favor with your gift of this book to your off-spring and all others who are Interested. Pass on the good word and let us make a success of this project which ultimately will benefit the S. W. U.
Scholarship Fund — our own students who are seeking a fine education.
This month is about the last chance you will have to join one of the many excursion groups traveling to Europe and Slovenia this summer. You have never had such a deal! No. 39,Biwabik, Minn. ■— The Dec. meeting of the S.W.U. was called to order by our president Fran Anzelc at 2 p. m. at the church hall. Present were 20 members which gave us a warm feeling as it was a very cold day with lots of snow.
A donation of $6.00 was given to our church. We decided to hold meetings this year at the church hall on the second Sunday of the month. By-laws were read and approved. The election of officers was on the agenda and all present officers were unanimously re-elected, namely: Fran Anzelc, pres.; Margaret Setnikar, vice-pres.; Shirley She-rek, secy-treas.; Angeline Karish, rec. secy; Mayme Mohar, Mary Globokar and Mary Berkness, auditors. Johnna Zallar, spiritual director and Mary Geržina, sergeant-at-arms. Congratulations, ladles, and we wish you a year filled with good health and good luck. All members promise their undivided support.
Santa would have been overjoyed if he had seen the enthusiasm put Into our Christmas dinner with Johanna Zallar taking the chairmanship assisted by Fran Anzelc and the rest. It’s hard work, but fun. A wonderful turkey dinner with all the trimmings was served and afterward, the exchange of gifts was held. Such a variety of presents! It was as if St. Nick knew what everyone wanted. The decorations were just beautiful. Anne Spehar won the lovely door prize and we all went home well fed and happy seeing the happy faces; we forgot our cares for a while. We promised each other to have more of these happy times in the future and to keep the members Interested in the meetings.

Boja Pavalich had surgery at the Virginia Hospital; a speedy recovery is the wish of all of us. Margaret Berg broke her arm — she is taking it well and I know that soon she will be good as new.
We hope this whole year brings good health and happiness to all our members.
May 4th is the day set aside for our Mother’s Day breakfast and we will honor the Mother of the Year, Angeline Karish. The cost of this breakfast is taken from the treasury.
Another date was then set for the dinner where the members of the S.W.IJ. attended in a group and this was April 26th at Aggie’s. We are also going to have a picnic this summer, so think about it, members, and make plans to attend. You may bring your husbands along — the cost of the meeting will come out of the treasury.
There are members confined to nursing homes and their own homes —so get out and visit them. We hope and pray each and everyone has God’s speed to recovery.

A Tribute to My Mother
No. 42, Maple Hts, Ohio. — Congratulations are in order! First of all, we wish to congraulate Louis Kastelic, Sr. on being named “Man-of-the-Year” for the Maple Heights Slovenian Home. He was presented this honor for his many years of work on behalf of the promotion of Slovenian cutlure in Maple Heights.
Also, our very best wishes go to Barry Zimmer, husband of Marie Ma-tis Zimmer, who has recently graduated from Kent State University School of Music. Good luck in all your future endeavors.
After our last regular meeting, Mary Hočevar treated the ladies with cake and coffee in honor of her birthday. Happy belated birthday to Mary and also to Nickle Lercli-bacher. Nickie and her husband, Frank, recently took a trip to Florida. We hope they enjoyed themselves and the warm weather in the Sunshine State.
Many of our members are in the process of making plans for summer vacations. Mary Yemec and her daughter, Marge, and Cecelia and John Hočevar are planning trips to Burope. We wish them and all our other members safe trips and happy times.	B.	A. Kastelic

Very often, as one grows older, one dislikes changes. We feel secure in old friends, old nooks, our old habits. But to retain the zest of life the willingness to go along with life and its changes, is a great virtue. This I see in my mother, Mrs. Louise Zidanic. She and my Dad raised a family of 5 children Mrs. Emily (Floyd) Fantelli, who has 5 children, who have given my mother
5	great grandchildren; Mr. Joe Zidanic, who has 3 children, who have given my mother 2 great grandchildren, Miss Louise Zidanic, never married, Mrs. Dorothy (Wade) Watts who has 1 child, and Mrs. Betty (Mike) Makar, who has 2 children.
When my father died, my mother came to live with me in Chicago (because of the convenience of no steps to climb in my apartment); she left everyone in Cleveland, and indeed missed everyone very much, but still retained her zest for life. We’ve been to Wisconsin, Arizona, California, Texas, Missouri, and we go home very often (Cleveland). She flys every chance she gets.
She will be 81 in October. She belongs to a Senior Citizen Club here and she loves to get up and sing on the stage (duets). She goes on their trips and now she baby sits with me. Not for me, but with me. We both go out together. She feeds the babies, and plays with the little ones, and feels a part of the world, be-
tions and loads of good luck and happiness. Three weeks later, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Ambrosh joined the celebrants in Florida and at the same time visited their son who is studying chef work and from all comments he is doing very well in his vocation. To all above, a happy celebration and safe rteurn.
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bruno, too, are vacationing in Florida and since Joe has retired, they have been traveling and taking advantage of the suntan climate. Good luck, Brunos.
The Bill Frangesh family spent a week in Memphis, Tenn. Bill was chosen as delegate for the Holiday Inn to attend a convention there. Congratulations, Bill and hope you and your family enjoyed the trip.
Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Larson on the arrival of their first son, and also to the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bevsek, Sr. Then, to our president, Ann Konczal, on a new granddaughter.
Two bowling teams were entered in the Midwest Tournament in Oglesby, 111. Our branch thanks Jean Jelenc of the Jelenc Morticians for backing one of the teams. Jean has been very generous in her donations. Whenever she is asked, she smiles and says: “Why sure!” Those of you who know Jean will agree she is a very lovely person.

But she’d like to hear from her old friends in Cleveland. She has turned into a beautiful great grandmother. People have stopped and told me what a beautiful woman she is. She loves and is very proud of her son Joe who takes care of her financially, and her 4 daughters Em, Lou, Dore and Betts. But she would love to hear from her old cronies in Cleveland. The ten girls who left for Oglesby were very fortunate to have reservations with the West Allis group. The trip was nicely arranged, very sociable and we all had a great time. We stopped at the Kaskasian Hotel and had a buffet lunch which was just out of this world. The assortment of food was great, very tasty, and exceptionally good. We were more than satisfied. It was a lovely day and at this time would like to thank Mrs. Marie Floryan for reserving seats for our group on the bus. Yours truly was the lucky person who received the knitted afghan and pillow given by the Oglesby branch at the tournament. It is gorgeous and I wish to thank them and the gals who knitted the beautiful set.

The daughter of Mary Frankowski was greatly surprised by a miscellaneous wedding shower. She received loads of gifts, all were very practical items. Another member, Frances Zortz, her daughter Joan was also surprised by a large wedding shower. To these two future brides, best wishes and good luck.
From reports, we do have some sick members and Mary Kiel hasn’t been feeling too well. She has been ailing for several weeks. Here’s hoping that she will recover soon. Marie Miller recently had surgery. She is recovering slowly and is staying alternately at her daughter’s and son Ronnie’s homes. She will be with her children for at least a month. To her and all other sick and shut-ins, a speedy recovery.
Belated sympathy to Katherine Osep whose husband passed away after a long illiness. May God bless him.
Mrs. Herta Majhenich, the beloved wife of our organist and choir director Ernest Majhenich, was called to her eternal reward on Friday, March 28th. She will be sadly missed by all, a loyal supporter in any activity or organization, a tireless worker and above all, a good Catholic mother and wife. She had been to Mass and received Holy Communion les than 2 hours before her fatal accident. To the Majhenich family, our condolences and to her, our prayers
—	God reward her.

No. 45, Portland, Ore. — Meeting opened with prayer. Attendance was very small — only 9 members. Our meeting place now is at Mrs. Polich’s residence, 152G N. W. 19th and her telephone number is 227-1800.
Election of officers was held at the Christmas meeting and all were unanimously elected to the same offices. Meetings are still on the second Tuesday of the month with no meetings in June, July, August and then we resume again in September thru December.
Mrs. Staso Conchuratt was chosen Mother of the Year at the Christmas meeting.
We have lost one of our sister members this year, Mrs. Anna Su-gura. Survivors are Mr. Sam Sugura, husband; daughter, Mrs. Pat Hull of California, Mrs. Sinovic, Miss Elizabeth Sugura, both of whom are members of S. W. U. and sons, Joseph and Peter. There are also grandchildren. The 3 daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Cinovic are our junior members. Prayers are requested for the repose of her soul. Our deepest sym-path to the bereaved.
We have four new junior members.
We discussed our Palm Sunday breakfast held at the Mallory Hotel after the 10:30 Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral.
A dance was planned for April 26th at the Beaver Hall given by our branch in conjuction with the Croatian Fraternal Union and Croatian Catholic Union.

No. 50, Cleveland, O. During the month of May our branch is certain to go round in circles with all the activities we have planned. Here is the score: May 16-17: Rummage Sale and Bake Sale at Baraga Dom on St. Clair. Bring in your unwanted or unused items that are sale-able; clothes that are clean and wearable for all ages. Bring hats, toys, china jewelry, kitchen appliances, gadgets and utensils that you consider White Elephants.
On Friday, May 15th we will set up the tables. Bring along your baked goods at the same time. Poticas, strudels, cakes or home made bread!
May 19th is our meeting night and it will be dedicated to all our former Mothers of the Year to act as escorts to our 1969 Mother of the Year. Isn’t it exciting that all mothers will be remembered? To make this a bigger event, you are asked to bring a pot luck dish. For ideas call 261-2856, if you cannot decide what to bring.
A large number of our members attended the Dawn Choral Group’s first concert. Every song was a joy to hear. They received a big ovation. Corinne Leskovar, Dawn Editor, with her charm and warm personality, was Mistress of Ceremonies. It was a pleasure to see and hear her again.
Congratulations to Mrs. Marie Pris-land, on her new book entitled FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA. Every member should purchase this book for their sons and daughters. It is a good book, educational and in a high friendly spirit.
Anyone having a late vacation, can still visit Slovenia this summer, call Rose Želodec EN. 1-2219. She and her husband will leave for a three week stay Aug. 3rd. Join the group. You will have a good time.
Missed all our “singers” at the meeting — hope they will be able to attend regularly again. Our busy travelers, Mary Cesnik visited Florida and Carolyn Budan, Hawaii. Hope they enjoyed their visits.
March birthday ladies were Josephine Bencin and Rose Želodec. Name Day gals In March were Josephine Siewiorek and Josephine Bencin. We all joined in singing Happy Birthday and Name Day to them.
A penalty of 25<} was paid by the members who omitted the wearing of the green at the March meeting. Net profit was $1.75.
On our sick list we still have Josephine Benedik, Josephine Debevec, Evana Mandel, Vida Furlan. Call or send them a cheer up card.
Sincere sympathy is extended to Vida Furlan on the loss of her dear mother, Mrs. Rose Lapp; also to Theresa Komat who lost her dear brother in the terrible mine disaster in West Virginia last January, and to Mary Ludvik on the loss of her dear husband.
After the meeting, our hostess really went to town — we had egg salad canapes, orange cake and delicious coffee.
Our next meeting will be June 16th, 8 p. m. sharp. Will you be there? Will you help us make plans for our annual August Picnic? This is a big event because every member enjoys it. Are your dues paid up yet? Please keep secretary Marie Beck happy. God bless all our sick members to a speedy recovery.

No. 52, Kitzville, Minn. Our meeting was again held at the Little Grove at which time we had over 30 members present. The meeting was short. A few letters were read and sister Rose Trombly was absent so our Minutes were not read. There were a few new faces at our meeting and it was a pleasure to see them. So, please make it a habit and enjoy our evenings together.
Sister Shirley Spinelli was a patient at the Hibbing General Hospital and we wish her and all our sick members Godspeed to a rapid recovery.
Sister Patricia Chisholm is also reported on the sick list. We hope and pray that they will all be recovered soon.
This concluded our business session and prayers were recited and led by president, sister Josephine Oswald.
The social of the evening took place and cards were played. Honors went to the following isters: Alberta Russo, Gertrude Kochevar, Margaret Andrican, Elizabeth Spinelli, Angeline Russ, Ann Nelmark, Rose Chiodi and Mildred Barbatto, who also won the door prize.
Hostess of the evening were sisters Muriel Sabatine, Phyllis Pavich, Frances Jerlcovich, Elizabeth Spinelli. A delicious lunch was served and a wonderful time was had by all.

March 9th was the big day as the Dawn Choral Group made a big hit at their first concert. Many compliments were received from the crowd and everyone enjoyed the program. Yes! This was a happy day for our singers. A prayer was said and answered. A success it was and a large crowd attended that it couldn’t be better.
Besides our choral group, Corlnne Leskovar, our Editor, came from Chicago and we took advantage of this by itoking her to be our mistress of ceremonies as all of us had to be ready for the singing. Corinne had on her Slovenian national costume and it really added the right touch to the concert. She did everything so beautifully, she certainly helped to make the program complete and professional. She is loved by all.
Also, my hearty thanks to Supreme Secretary, Albina Novak and her sister Jean Križman who came with Corinne and her children from Chicago for this special event. I knew that they were interested in our program and we all appreciated their visit. They gave us a big lift.
Among our special guests of the day was our Supreme President, Antonia Turek who must have been proud to hear so many compliments by those who enjoyed the program. This helps Zveza and increases the organization’s popularity.
Thanks to all my co-workers, the committee, Frances Nemanich, Theresa Skur, Mary Stražišar, Pauline Krall, Frances Globokar, Anna Hočevar, Pauline Vegal, Mary Drobnick and Josephine Comenshek. These ladies and many more worked very hard and in fact, all the group just pitched right in where help was needed. I just cannot thank them enough — I am so happy to [have such a co-operative group. A special thanks to their husbands, too, who helped at the beverages and at the door — also at the refreshment ticket stand. You just could not have been more wonderful! May God bless you all. It’s impossible to mention everyone’s name — but you all have my deepest thanks.
1 want to express special thanks to a wonderful person who worked so hard and took such complete interest in teaching us and who is loved by the choral group and be is Frank Gorensek, our director. We all Appreciate his work and we hope he enjoys working with us.
Also, a big thank you to the Combined Branches for the beautiful bouquet of red carnations presented to me. I can’t put into words my happiness and gratitude for your thoughtfulness. Thanks to the Supreme President.

My hearty thanks for the final surprise of the day, the beautiful trophy presented to me by the S.W.U. It makes me feel so happy to have this for the rest of my life. I could see that all my hard work is appreciated —and that you know I really have my heart and soul in Zveza.
Those of you who attended the concert saw that 1 was wearing a beautiful white orchid and this was presented to me by the ladies of the Dawn Choral Group before the concert. The vice-president, when she pinned it on me, gave a little speech in behalf of the singers and it was very touching. These ladies are to me as dear as my real sisters. Pauline Vegal did a wonderful job. It was like a dream for me but I was so happy to hear those lovely words. God bless you all and I hope we will stay together, to sing together and work together in the future.
Didn’t you think our pianist Mary Gerl, was wonderful? The group is very grateful to her and love her.
The two sweet ladies who performed a duet for us, and harmonized so well together, Tillie Spehar and Mimi Režonja worked extra hard to pratice this nice addition to our grogram. We love them for it and thank them. I hope they keep up their dueting for a long time to come. Thanks girls. And, Mimica Režonja, dressed in her little Slovenian outfit was darling as she presented Mr. Gorensek the big basket of carnations and the bouquet to me. This was all such a joy. Again, thanks to one and all who participated in any way.

No. 55, Girard, O. The March meeting was enjoyed by all who attended. Plans were completed for the May Covered Dish, not only will we celebrate the Mother of the Year day but also Mothers and Daughters day. So, dear members, don’t forget, May the 8th.
Am sure your Zarja will arrive in time for this announcement. The secretary will try «.nd contact as many as she can as you know what a person works it is rather hard to do so. The officers will again be hosts for the May meeting.
Sophie Kren was our March hostess and she served delicious apple strudel and coffee. Games were played and prizes won by Barbara Umeck, Nancy Dombrosky and Helen Biscan. The door prize went to hostess, Sophie Kren.
April meeting, Marie Cvetnic was hostess. Remember to get your dues paid as after the May meeting we will have a three month vacation and the first meeting of the fall will be in September.

No. 56, Hibbing, Minn. Your reporter missed the March 11th meeting due to a school commitment but have the report of the meeting given to me by our President Anne Sato-vlch.
After a brief business session, the Charter was draped in honor of our former member Mrs. Joseph Zalc Jr. who died recently.
Congratulations are in order for Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dreshar on the arrival of their son John Jacob, also to the proud great-grandma Barbara Dosen.
Our secretary Mary Meadows received the books “From Slovenia to America” and anyone wanting copies o-f it can contact her.
Anna Studaliar missed the jackpot and she is usually at the meetings.
Cards were played with prizes going to Mmes. Mary Meadows, Prances Bernard, Joe Massich, Louis Putzel, Clifford Barkis and Louis Drobnick.
Hostesses for the evening were Mmes. Anthony Babich, Nick P. Maras, Richard Carlson, Santi Valeri and Miss Margaret Shelko.
Being as it will be Mother’s Day by the time this gets to print I have a poem my daughter Mana wrote for me a few years ago and would like to share it with you ladles:
WHAT IS A MOTHER?
A mother is a rubdown of Vicks On a child’s congested chest.
She becomes a medical “bartender" With “pill cocktails” as her best.
A mother is the word “No”,
Used at the proper time,
But she’s also the word “Yes” When the time for it is prime.

She’s a marvel with projects, uncanny with fun,
And spends time helping others at call.

No. 66, Canon City, Colo. Since my last report, we have lost two of our Slovenian pioneers of Canon City.
Mrs. Marie Adamic passed away on March 6th after a lingering illness of fifteen years. She was 84 years old.
She is survived by three daughters, one son, 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildem. A brother is in Alcin, Wis. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery.
On March 11th, sister member, Theresa Sustarsic passed away after a five year illness, She, too, was 84 years old. She was bom in Slovenia on Oct. 6th 1884 and in 1903 she married there to Valentine Sustarsic He preceded her in death as did one son and a brother, Frank Opaskar of Cincinnati, Ohio. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Burial was at Lakeside Cemetery with members attending Mass and funeral. Father Bonaventure Bandi, O.S.B. had Mass and burial	rites for	both	members.
Our deepest sympathy to the A-damic and	Sustarsic	families.
Sisters Freda Triano and Judith Javernick had surgery and are getting along fine.
Congratulations to Sharon Hannah who made her first Holy Communion on Palm Sunday. Sharon is the daughter of sister Dorothy Hannah and was recently enrolled into our juvenile department.
Our secretary and treasurer, Helen McFarland, is doing fine work and I am happy	to be working	with	her.
We were	happy to	have	our	son,
Frank Jr., daughter-in-law and granddaughter from Anchorage, Alaska visiting with us. They are returning back to Alaska by car.

No. 72, Pullman, III. It is with much sadness that I am reporting the death of our friend and member Mrs. Mary Dolinar. Mrs. Dolinar has been with Zveza No. 72 since its very beginning in 1936. She has always been a staunch member, ready and willing to do anything asked of her, and had a wonderful attendance record until the last couple of years when she began to ail. She was one of our “old-timers” and its sad to see them go one by one. She was loved by all who knew her and we will surely miss her both as a member and as a friend. Her passing is a personal loss to me as she was truly a good friend to me. May her soul rest In peace.
Wo have quite a number of ailing members who have not been able to come to the meetings in a long time due to their health. Mrs. Zadnik, Mrs. Andolsek, Mrs. Levstik who is in a convalescent home. Jennie Brljavec who is still recuperating from her long illness, Mrs. Arko, and others. To all — our greatest wish for you Is good health.
Our next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Arko at 318 West 111th Place on Sunday afternoon June 8th. By the way, I have the book FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA as well as the new cook book. You’ve read about both of them in ZARJA. Call me if you want a copy, or come to the meeting to get a copy.

APPLE OR LEMON STRUDEL for Mother’s Day would be a traditional dessert. My mother sent the following apple strudel recipe which Mrs. Mary Turk and Mrs. Anthony Udovich prepared at the Slovenian Women’s Union booth at the People to People International Folk Festival in Sheboygan. Their demonstration was enthusiastically watched, not only by women, but also by men. Mrs. Antonia Turek sent in the lemon strudel recipe which was included In the sheet of recipes distributed at the Cleveland Bazaar.
APPLE STRUDEL By Mrs. Mary Turk
Dough;
3 cups sifted flour % teaspoon salt
1 egg, beaten
4 tablespoons melted butter or oleo % cup luke warm water
Place flour and salt into a bowl; make a well in the center and put in the beaten egg and shortening. Stir while gradually adding the water to make a soft dough. Work the dough in the bowl with fingers until it comes away from the sides; take out and knead for about 10 minutes on a bread board until the dough is silky-smooth. Form into a ball; then place it in an ungreased bowl, covering it tightly with aluminum foil to make It air tight to prevent a crust from forming. The dough should rest in a warm place for two hours or more.
In the meantime, spread a clean tablecloth over a kitchen table dusting the cloth with flour and wash, peel, core and thinly slice the apples. When the dough is ready place it in the center of the floured cloth and pull it apart about 18 inches in diameter. Then spread dough with *4 cup or stick melted butter or oleo. Now flour both hands and reach under the dough. With the back of the hands start strechting the dough carefully from the center toward the outside walking around the table as necessary. Don’t raise your knuckles too high. Work gently or you’ll puncture the dough.
Strech the entire dough paper thin (about 30 by 48 Inches). The edges will be thick so trim them off. If

you’ve made a hole, moisten the area around it with a little water and pateh with the dough from the trimmings.
Filling:
4	to 5 cups thinly sliced apples Ms cup fine bread crumbs browned in butter or oleo 1 cup golden raisins; washed and dried
1 cup sugar mixed with a dash of cinnamon
Spread the length of the dough with the filling up to about 12 inches from the opposite side (this unfilled end which is rolled last will serve as a protection from apples piercing through the dough). Now lift the corners of the cloth from the end covered with filling and start to roll the dough, jelly-roll fashion, by pulling the clothe upwards. Loosely rolled dough will give room for expansion during baking. Shape the strudel into a U-shape; then slide onto a well buttered baking sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until golden brown. 20 minutes before the strudel is baked, glaze with the following:
Glaze: Beat one egg yolk with - teaspoon of milk and brush the strudel with this mixture. Strudel can be served warm or cold and sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Note. The thick parts of the dough which were cut off on the ends can be saved for another strudel (store these in the refrigerator ( or they can be baked separately with the strudel.
This recipe was given in detail for those who have never made strudel.

LEMON STRUDEL (from Cleveland Bazaar)
Dough:
3	cups flour % teaspoon salt Vi cup melted shortening Vi cup Mazola Oil (combined should equal % cup)
1	egg, well beaten % cup warm water
Sift flour and salt into bowl. Combine shortening, egg and water. Pour into flour and mix well with table knife, then use your fingers until you have a soft dough. If too sticky, add a little flour and knead some more. Dough has to be soft, but not sticky. Cover with cloth and let stand for one hour or more.
Filling:
4	egg whites
4	egg yolks Rind of 2 lemons Juice of 2 lemons
2	heaping tablespoons bread crumbs % pound butter 1% cups sugar
Cream together butter and sugar; add egg yolks and mix well. Blend lemon juice, rind and bread crumbs. Add to butter mixture. Fold in the stiffly beaten egg whites.
Roll out the dough on cloth sprinkled with flour and stretch it until paper thin. Spread filling over the dough and roll up like potica or jelly roll. Place in well-greased 9x12 pan and bake 1 hour in 325 dgree oveu. Cool. Cut in 2 inch pieces and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Mrs. Turek also included a cute, true story about the four year old granddaughter of Mrs. Frances Sietz. Mother was making strudel to serve that evening for company when the little girl entering the kitchen said in surprise, "Oh, we have a new tablecloth.” Her mother explained that this was not a new tablecloth, but strudel dough that covered the table and hung over the sides. That evening when the company sat down at the table the little girl said, “You are going to have mother’s new tablecloth for dessert.”

We are sorry to report two deaths, that of the sister of Josephine Turk, Antonia Safranek and the mother of Judy Turk, namely Mary Bruch. May the perpetual light shine upon them.
Sylvia Crummie’s husband had an accident at the shop where he works. We all pray he is getting better.

No. 89, Oglesby, III. — Meeting was opened with prayer and reports given with the president, Frances Meglich presiding.
Memorial services were conducted and the charter draped for the late Frances Nemeth, our former president Mrs. Nemeth was our organizer of Branch No. 89 and at this time, the ceremonies were conducted by the president and the chancellor, Mrs. Lyle Morrison. Pallbearers who stood as honorary guard from our branch were Mary Cenkar, Elsa Zabavnik and Mary Meglich Yazbec. Mrs. Nemeth leaves 3 daughters and one son and several grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy.
We heard a report on the afghan project and concluded the meeting without a social as it was lent.

Chicago, III. — At our April meeting I was delighted to her Mary Medonich that her husband Michael and Mr. and Mrs. Anna Medonich of Pueblo, Colorado donated $100 to the Slovenian Chapel Fund, also a new spirit of respect and cooperation developed that evening when our members voted to donate $25 to the chapel. Last but not least, $10 was donated to Sacred Heart Croatian church for Easter.

After the business portion of our meeting, we had Mr. Joseph Bamberger an attorney and vice president and trust officer for South Chicago Savings Bank, as our guest speaker. Mr. Bamberger greatly impressed the members with a most interesting outline of his concept of “Wilis and Joint Ownership”. The members are most grateful to our guest speaker for taking time to visit and instruct us. We wish him good luck in his future which promises to be rosy. It would be quite remiss of me to let a pleasant ven-ing go unnoticed. Ann Sertich prepared a giant table of goodies—supplied by the following, Rose Mary Cacich, Marge Innis, Emma Yergo-vich, Marge Nicksic, Barbara Sambol and Ann Nelson.
Condolences to Anna Jovanovich on the loss of her beloved daughter.
In conclusion, Mother Love is the title of our May 7th, meeting.
On Sunday May 11th, the nation will pay tribute to all of its mothers from the young to the aged, women in nursing homes and other institutions all over the world. Sons and daughters everywhere will express their love and gratitude to mother in their own special way. I think the most precious gift to all mothers is to tell her you love her. There is so much meaning of yourself in that most precious gift. God bless all mothers whether they are living or deceased.

No. 96. — Universal, Pa. — Meeting was held at the Center Slovene Hall on March 9th when a good number of members were present.
Tentative plans are being made to attend the Folk Festival which will be held in the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh in June. We will go by bus on the evening when the Slovenian program will be featured. Our branch will provide tickets for all members who wish to attend. The bus fares will be paid by the members. Those who haven’t yet signed up can do so at this time by calling Mary Sascek.

Five of our ladies recently went to the East Ohio Gas Co. for a baking class. Everyone really had a wonderful and enjoyable time. We baked bread, dinner rolls, and a tea ring, which we were able to take home. They served a delicious lunch, also. Those attending were Dorothy Kastelic, Stella Hajek, Doris Burdyshaw, Betty Matjašič and myself; also, a girlfriend of Stella’s named Daisy.

No. 103, Washington, D. C. In order to capitalize on space and still include the news from March, let me report in a point by point fashion:
1. Guest Lecturer was Dr. Mario Mollari of Georgetown Univeristy who spoke on the “Congo.’ and showed a movie of the doctor-missionary, “Maganga” John Ross. This was Dr. Mollart’s second presentation for our group and we are indeed grateful to him for his time and fine lectures.
2. Plans were made for the Mother’s Day, Mass-Brunch-Program, to be held on the 3rd Sunday in May. Announcements will be sent out stating further details. Also discussed were plans for the American-Slovene Day in the form of a picnic, scheduled on June 15th, at Camp Lette, located on Rt. 214, Maryland. The Camp (YMCA Boy’s Summer Camp) is only a 45 minut drive and located on the Rhodes River. There are a lot of things to see and areas where all types of sports can be enjoyed. We encourage all members and friends to attend. Further information will appear in the monthly newsletter.
3. Hostessess for March were Diane Moffett and Kay Parsons. The bright table decorations were of yellow and green, so appropriate for the arrival of spring. The centerpiece was one of Kay’s original designs. She does so well in her flower arrangements. Delicious orange and chocolate cakes highlighted the refreshments planned by our loyal members, Kay and Diane. Many thanks, ladies;

ber, Jane Ellen Johnson who won the St. Mary’s School Spelling Bee in Alexndria, Va., and is now an official contestant in the Washington Daily News Spelling Contest. Best of luck, Janie!
5.	A bit of sad news. Mrs. Mary Michelitch is presently confined to Fairfax Hospital having undergone surgery for removal of gall bladder. We wish her a very speedy recovery and good health thereafter.
G. Two members will soon be moving into newly-purchased homes. The Nagels, Becky and John, will reside in Annandale, Va. and Mrs. Podbor-sek and son, John, have chosen the northwest Washington area. Many happy days in your new homes.
8. Away for the Easter holidays were Mr. and Mrs. A. Terselic and grandson, Rick. They headed south to Tennessee while Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Mejac and family spent their Easter north, in New York. Helen Krotec visited her father in Pittsburgh while Mrs. Anna Menapace returned to Washington after being a-way for months. We hope to see Mrs. Menapace again at one our meetings.

Without a doubt she has been a loyal, a hardworking secretary, volunteering her services for every function, assuming a responsible and enthusiastic attitude for every endeavor. I am sure all members will agree with this statement: She is a wonderful person with whom to work and a truly lovely individual to know.

Morda bo treba naslov te kolone spremeniti iz “Oh, Ta Svet,” v “Narobe Svet.”
Včasih je veljalo staro pravilo, da večina zmaga in manjšina se mora ukloniti večini, zdaj revoltira manjšina, ki hoče, da se ves svet ukloni njenim zahtevam. — Celo vreme se obrača narobe kot ljudje. Mesec februar in marc sta bila prav lepa in gorka. Živo srebro je prilezlo do 70 stopinj gorkote. Kar čez noč pa je nastalo silno mrzlo vreme. Ko to pišem — 1, aprila — imamo le 5 stopinj gorkote. Vidite! Oba, svet in vreme, se na glavo postavljate.

Joseph Cliesarek, v Prosveti; "Zbirati gradivo za tako knjigo je	težavno in zamudno	delo, ker se	je	treba
obrniti na	razne stranke za podatke. Naravno,	da	je pi-
sateljica morala opis mnogih naselbin, v katerih so se naselili naši priseljenci skrajšati, ker človek bi lahko napisal celo knjigo samo o zgodovini kake naše naselbine, kaj šele če hoče v eni sami knjigi priobčiti podatke o prvih naseljencih, ki so prišli v to deželo, o kateri so mislili, da se cedi med in mleko.”
Anton Okolish, Barberton, Ohio, je knjigo v Novi Dobi, glasilu A. B. Z. (Ameriške bratske zveze) lepo predstavil. Omenja: “Ta knjiga je zelo dobrodošla tukaj rojenemu narodu.”

Dve Zvezini članici sta me z takojšno razpečavo knjig prijetno presenetili. Gospa Josephine Gostisha v Forest Cityju je takoj prodala G8 knjig, gospa Agnes Pogline v Denverju pa 5G. Tudi naše, razmeroma majhno mesto Sheboygan, se je lepo odzvalo. Slovenci in Ame-rikanci so dosedaj pokupili 221 knjig. Prepričana sem, da ko pridejo poročila iz naših velikih slovenskih naselbin kot Cleveland, Chicago in drugod in ko se oglasi Minnesota in Pennsylvania, kjer imamo največ podružnic, bom o njihovi narodni zavednosti lahko z veseljem poročala.
Knjiga ne bo prinesla odlične denarne pridobitve, ker sta tisk in vezava silno dragi; tudi klišeji za slike gredo v stotake. Seznanila pa to ameriško javnost s slovensko zgodovino, kar je neprecenljive vrednosti za ves naš narod in za vse nas, ki smo prišli v to deželo ter s trdim delom in velikimi žrtvami ustvarili to, kar danes Slovenci v Ameriki kot narod posedujemo.
V	knjigi so omenjene vse naše organizacije in njihova izplačila kot so jih poročali tajniki. Izplačila za bolniško in smrtninsko podporo znašajo nad 100 milijonov dolarjev. Lep dokaz vsakomur, da Slovenci nismo pričakovali zunajnih podpor, temveč smo se skušali v nesreči vzdrževati sami. Koliko so naše organizacije prispevale za razne dobrodelnosti, nisem mogla ugotoviti. Sigurno pa Je, da tudi te gredo v visoke številke.
Kot že omenjeno, bo od prodaje knjig, po pokritju stroškev in dela, presežek vložen v Zvezin šolninski sklad v spomin slovenskim pionirjem v Ameriki.

če vsi grmi bi cveteli, vsi cvetovi zadehteli, vse vodice zašumljale in vse zvezde zasijale, da njo z njimi obdarujem, ki ji vse, prav vse dolgujem, bi — premalo mogel dati, Tebi, moja ljuba mati.
D. Gorinšek
LIK MATERE
Lik matere nam je vsem svet. Vendar ima ta lik svoj pravi pomen le če ga gledamo v luči krščanstva. Nekaj naravnega je, da otrok ljubi svojo mater in ji izkazuje to svojo ljubezen. Ta ljubezen pa dobi glo-
biji pomen in posvečenje v materinstvu božje matere. Če ga ne gledamo v tej primerjavi je naše češčenje matere, malikovanje.
Na tisoče in tisoče besed je bilo napisanih in izgovorjenih o materah, ker človek kot razumno bitje lahko pove kar čuti. To odliko človeka občudujemo. Če bi nerazumna bitja mogla govoriti bi verjetno prav tako izražala v besedah svojo ljubezen do svojega zaroda kakor to dela človek. Kako so nam pravzaprav različne vnanje proslave skazile pravo podobo matere.
Čuvstvovanje otroka do matere in matere do otroka je postalo predmet trgovine. Priznati si moramo, da to ni tisto, kar smo hoteli in da ni tako kakor smo mislili.
Ko sem bil še otrok, je moja mama vedno rada hodila posebno v postnih nedeljah popoldne v podružno cerkev molit. Cerkev je bila posvečena Žalostni Materi božji. Najprej se je ustavila v prošnji kapelici, ki je stala izven cerkve. To je bila prvotna kapelica Matere božje, cerkev so posvetili njej na čast še le pozneje.
Tam sem videl na oltarju tako v kapelici kakor v cerkvi žalostno Marijo s srcem ki ga je prebadalo sedem mečev. Meni je to bila vedno uganka:	Zakaj
sedem mečev? Še le mnogo pozneje sem zvedel za pomen teh mečev; Marijino posebno trpljenje. Prvi meč je zadel Marijo ob prerokovanju starčka Simeona, da bo Jezus postavljen v padec mnogih. Drugi meč je zadel Marijo, ko sta morala z Jožefem zapustiti svojo deželo in se podati v Egipt. Tretji meč jo je zadel, ko je Jezusa tri dni z žalostjo iskala. Četrti meč jo je zadel, ko je srečala svojega sina s križem obloženega. Peti križ jo je zadel, ko je gledala svojega sina v smrtnih težavah. Šesti meč jo je zadel, ko je sulica prebodla srce njenega sina, ko je visel na križu. Sedmi meč jo je zadel, ko so njenega sina položili v grob.
Sedaj razumem zakaj se ie moja mama in vse verne matere zatekajo k žalostni materi božji. Tam so dobile moč, da so lahko nosile svoj križ zakonskega življenja in da so mogle izpolnjevati dolžnosti svojega stanu. Tam so se naučile kaj je žrtev. Te žrtve, ki jih stalno doprinašajo ne samo kot naraven proces, ampak tudi kot članice božjega kraljestva jih dela velike v očeh otrok. To jim vzbuja spoštovanje. In zato tudi prosimo, da naj nam jih Bog Se dolgo ohrani.
Bog živi naše zvezine matere!
LuIhi Troha
Št. 2, Chicago, III. Za častno mater v tem letu je bila imenovana sestra buba Troha, 180G W. 22nd Place. Rojena je bila 10. julija, 1900 v vasi Zamost na Hrvaškem, deliško ime Malinarič.
V Ameriko je prišla z možem s katerim se je poročila v domovini 5. oktobra, 1915. Prišla sta 2'8. julija, 1920 in se naselila v južni državi Alabama, kjer sta pridno se poprijela vseh del. V Chicago sta se selila pred 20 leti.
V zakonu so bili trije otroci, sin je umrl in živita hčerki Amelia, poročena Russell in Virginia, poročena Železnikar. Sestra Troha Je zelo pridnih rok. Zelo rada kvačka, plete in šiva. Isto je dobra v gospodinjstvu. Za kratek čas pa rada balina in se udeležuje balincarsldh tekem v
Waukegan in letos gre v Milwaukee.
K podružnici je pristopila leta 1950, kakor tudi njeni hčerki. V uradu rediteljice je že deset let in se vedno točno udeležuje vseh sej in pomaga, kjerkoli je mogoče. Želimo ji še mnogo let zdravja in sreče ter ji iskreno čestitamo k imenovanju častne matere!
Lucia Jerin
Št. 7, Forest City, Pa. — Častna mati pri št. 7 je Lucija Jerin, dekliško ime je bilo Skrabar, rojena v Domžalah na Gorenjskem 2. decembra, 1893. Živi na G75 Main Street, Vandling, Pa. V Ameriko je prišla k bratu v septembru, 1920. Kmalu za tem se je preselila v Pennsylvania, kjer se je poročila 1. junija, 1925, z Jožetom. Z zakonu so se rodili trije otroci: Josephine, Louis in Joseph. Stara mati je sedmim vnukom.
častna mati, Mrs. Jerin, pridno skrbi za gospodinstvo in kar ji časa ostaja je rada na vrtu, katerega pridno obdeluje. Ker je zelo skromnega značaja ni hotela bolj obširno poročati o svojih doprinosih, ampak vemo, da je vzorna mati in gospodinja.
Vdova je že od 19, marca, 1914. Naše iskrene čestitke in želje, da bi dočakala še mnogo let v krogu svojih domačih In prijateljev ter bila vedno pri dobrem zdravju.
Frances Novak
Št. 15, Cleveland (Newburgh), Ohio.
Letos je bila izbrana za častno mater sestra Frances Novak, 3552 E. 80tli St., ki že več let lepo' vodi tajniške posle. Sestra Novak je bila rojena
v	Clevelandu 2. aprila, 1899. Njeno dekliško ime je bilo Zabukovec. Za moža si je izbrala Rudolfa Novak in
MRS. TROHA
se poročila 12. januarja, 1920. V zakonu se je rodilo štiri otrok: Frances (poročena Chervenak), Elsie (poročena Ellis) ter Rudolph in Harry. Stara mati je trinajstim vnukom. Poleg društvenega dela, ki vzame precej njenega časa ljubi vrtnarstvo in skrbno neguje svoj vrt v katerem goji vseh vrst krasnih cvetlic. Pri podružnici opravlja delo tajnice že deset let. Zelo rada pomtaga pri pri reditvah, ki so za društveno korist.
Članice jo imajo zares vse rade. Častni materi čestitamo ter ji želimo še dolgo vrsto let v lepem društvenem delu in da bi bila zdrava, kar je zelo važno.
Mary Zust
št. 25, Cleveland, Ohio. — Največja podružnica pri Zvezi je za letos izbrala sestro Mary Zust za svojo najbolj zaslužno mater. Sestra Zust, dekliško ime Mivsek je bila rojena dne
4.	oktobra, 1880 v Sloveniji, v fari Sv. Trije Kralji. V Ameriko je prišla kot mlada dekle in se poročila dva meseca po prihodu, to je bilo 6. marca, 1905. V za&onu z Johnom Zust se rodilo 7 otrok: hčeri Mary ( poročena Jeraj) in Josepliine( poročena Pureber), ter sinovi: John, Anthony, Louis, Frank in Stanley. Stara mati je 22 vnukom in prastara mati je

dvajsetim. Sestra Zust je zelo mirnega značaja in si vzame za glavno nalogo delo pri gospodinjstvu, katero opravlja zelo spretno. Na seje pride redno ter vedno rada daruje in pomaga za vsako dobro stvar.
Prijazni mamici, stari mamici in prastari mamici čestitamo ter ji želimo še mnogo let zdravja in družinske sreče.

V	mladosti je pridno pomagala staršem v trgovini. Sedaj pa opravlja vsa hišna dela na domu mamice.
Mary je zelo potrpežljive narave in zelo rada pomaga, kjerkoli more. Zelo rada pomaga revnim in tudi pri društvih. Ona je zelo spretnih rok in zna delati umetne cvetlice. Našo podružnico je že neštetokrat obdarovala s šopki in smo' si lepo opomogle ročno blagajno. Vse članice želimo, da bi še dolgo let bila pri dobrem zdravju in vedno bila usmiljenega srca do vseh bljižih. Te vrstice ji poklanja, Jennie Pugelj, tajnica
Barbaru Stefatuic
Št. 49, Wickliffe, Ohio. — Družina Stefanac živi v Euclid že nad 30 let. Mr. Stefanac lastuje Euclid Cement and Block Company.
Sestra Stefanac, 21840 Miller Ave. je bila rojena 27. avgusta, 1897., v vasi Sela, Jugoslavija. Dekliško ime je bilo Jantalc. V Ameriko je prišla 20. junija, 1920 in je prišla k sestri s katero se nista videli več let. Poročila se je 28. februarja, 1914. V zakonu so se rodili štirje otroci: Zora, Barbara, Violet in John. Stara mati je 12 vnukom in prastara mati štirim pravnukom, ki živijo v Pomona, California V februarju sta z možem slavila 55. letnico zakona. Sestra Stefanac je zelo dobrega značaja in vedno rada pomaga pri podružnici. Poseb-

no se spominjamo na njeno darežlji vost, ko smo imele kadetke in je bila njena hčera Barbara (Goldie) zelo aktivna pri krožku.
Priložena slika je bila vzeta, ko so bili otroci še majhni in zdaj so vsi poročeni in imajo svoje družine.
Sin John živi v Euclid in je desna roka očetu pri podjetju. Zora, poročena Vidusic živi v Californiji in hčerka Goldie (poročena Gerl) živi v Euclid; Violet, poročena Kutnar ži-
vi	v Wickliffe, Ohio.
Obilo sreče in zdravja želimo vsem v družini ter pošiljamo iskrene čestitke!
Johannu Aubel
Št. 90, Presto, Penna. — Med članicami, ki so počaščene najdemo večkrat poznano ime, kakor pri št. 90, kjer so izbrale sestro Jolianno Aubel za svojo najbolj zaslužno mater v tem letu. Sestra Aubel živi
na 900 Steen Rd., Bridgeville, Pa. Njeno dekliško ime je bilo Miklau
čič.
Rojena je bila 30. maja, 1896 v vasi Hotavlje, Slovenia. V Ameriko je prišla 30. julija, 1908 in se nase lila v Presto, Penna. Z njo je prišla mama in več sorodnikov. Poročila se je 6. februarja, 1911 z Lojzetom Aubel. V družini so se rodili trije o-troci, dva sina: Lewis in Eugene ter hčerka, poročena Sočan. Stara mati je petim vnukom in prastara mati štirim pravnukom.
Sestra Aubel rada potuje in je bila že parkrat delegatka na konvencijah. Pridobila je lepo število članic za podružnico ter je vedno pripravljena pomagat za dobrobit podružnice. Rada opravlja tudi svoja domača dela in je zelo dobra druža-nica svojim domačim. Vsi želimo, da bi še dolgo let živela v sreči in zdravju!

Št. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — Odlika zaslužne matere je bila podeljena članici naše podružnice, Anne Wodušek, v spomin njene prerano umrle sestre, Elizabeth Prijatel.
V cvetličnem mesecu maju, praznujemo vesel Materinski dan. Bodite zdrave in vesele vse naše matere in otroci ljubite vaše dobre mamice, dokler so še med vami.
V istem mesecu ko praznujemo Materinski dan, je tudi spominski dan našim dragim pokojnim. Moja pokojna mati počiva v grobu že 22 let in še vedno mi je svež spomin na njo. SŽZ v duhu poklanja venec spominov v grob umrlih soses. ter se v hvaležnosti klanja v molitvi za vse umrle čla. Nepozabni mi je spomin moje drage soses. Bare Kramer in Margaret Kozjan. Bodi vsem časten spomin.
Lep poklon za materinski dan gotovo pristoja tudi materi naše SŽZ č. preds. Marie Prisland. Ona uživa veliko spoštovanje in ugled zaradi njene delavnosti za doprinos zgodovine slovenskega naroda. Njeno delo bo ostalo vedno v zgodovinskem spo-
minu. Vse čla, ji želimo naj Bog rosi blagoslove nad njo in njeno družino. Knjiga FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA je sedaj pripravljena za prodajo. Bodi Bogu potoženo, da tisti ki gredo za nami se ne zanimajo dovolj za prodajo, temveč gre več v prodajo med starejše, kot so naše grandma etc. Knjiga je zelo dobro urejena za pouk, da bolje poznano naš narod v Ameriki. Pokličite me in bom z veseljem dostavila knjigo na vaš dom. Knjiga je važna in bogate vsebine za berilo. Tudi Kuharske knjige imam na rokah. Knjiga ima 600 navodil za kuho in pečenje raznega peciva ter gospodinjstvo v hiši.
Veliko družino In bolnega moža ima naša pridna Anna Gradišar. Za kapelo v Wash, je odposlala $35, za kar ji velja iskrena zahvala.
Umrl je Joseph Grahek. Njegove sorodnice so naše članice. Sožalje!
V Granada Hills, Cal. je umrla Elsie Warmuth. Pokojna je hčerka Christine Zupančič. Truplo je bilo prepeljano za pogreb v njen rojstni kraj, Pueblo. Vsem pokojnim naj sveti nebeška luč, jamica tiha in kotiček miru.
V bolnišnici se nahaja Rose Schneider, zaradi srčnega napada. Zdravje se počasi vrača Mary Pograjc. Bog daj vsem našim bolnim ljubo zdravje.
Fran Chiodo je lepo opisala spominke, katere je prejela od hčerke pokojne Bare Kramer. Spotoma je omenila še mojo malenkost. Hvala lepa, Fran!
Zelo slovesna je bila poroka Sandre Lee Pechelc in Allan J. Juno. Sprejem gostov je bil v dvorano A-meriške Legije. Vsi smo bili veselo razpoloženi, posebno Anna Pechek, ki je nevestina stara mama. Želimo jim obilo božjega blagoslova v zakonskem življenju. Staršem neveste,
Fredu In Milile Pechek tudi veljajo naše čestitke.
Z grandma Angelo Perko, smo zapisale kot nove članice vnukinje, sestrice Frances In Patricia Peterlin.
Dorothy Zakrajšek mi je poklonila kot dar kampanje Državnih predsednic, 2 nove članice, to sta njena sestra Mrs. Mary Janezich in Maryno hčerko Carol. Iskrena hvala.

Št. 10, Cleveland, O. Naša zadnja seja se je vršila 11. marca z nekoliko večjo udeležbo, kot navadno. Več članic je iinelo rojstne dneve. Kar (i nas je obhajalo in to so bile: tajnica Mary Camloh, zapisnikarica Mary Komidar, vratarica Jenny Koren, Stel'i Koncilja, Josephine Šuštaršič in Mary Črnigoj. Tudi članica Jerca Bokal je v februarju obhajala rojstni dan, toda žal se je tisti čas nahajala v bolnišnici. Sedaj je doma pod zdravniško oskrbo. Vse ji želimo, da bi se hitro pozdravila in se udeležila majniške seje.
Naj še omenim, da smo se udeležile Zvezinega koncerta zbora Dawn, ki se je vršil na Rehar Ave. ob veliki udeležbi občinstva. Tako lepo petje bi poslušala kar po cele ure. Vsa čast naši marljivi preds. Mary Boštjan, ki si je vse to zamislila.
Omeniti moram, da smo dobile eno novo članico v razred B in to je Kisle Zalar.
Naslenje članice so v tem letu darovale v blagajno: Josephine Debevec, Mary Rakovec, Mary Korošec, Ivana Gombač, Mary Penko, Solie Magajna, Jenny Batich, Angela Smole, Mary Rus, Milly Novak, Phlllis Crme-ly, Ana Markovich, Jenny Ossek, Marta Batič, Alojzija Košmerlj, Ana Nestle in Antonija Repič. Lepa hvala vsem skupaj.
Našo sejo je predsednica zaključila
z molitvijo za vse umrle in bolne članice. Nato smo pa našo mizo pogrnile in naložile vsega za naše želodce in grla in se vse veselo razšle. Sesterski pozdrav,

Št. 14, Euclid, O. — Naša seja se je vršila prav na dan 1. aprila. Rilo je zunaj že prav toplo in naše spomladanske rožice že poganjajo iz zemlje. Kmalu bo vse v lepem cvetju. Na tej seji je bila udeležba precej pičla. Prosim, da pridete na prihodnjo' sejo, da nas bo več, ker odbor je bolj slabe volje, če vidi prazne stole pred seboj.
Ta večer je bila sprejeta v naše društvo kot nova članica, Mrs. Anni Bizjak. Sprejela jo je preds. Terezija Skur.
V tem času so bolane: Mrs. Olga Ozanič, ki se nahaja v bolnišnici ter so jo obiskale Frances Globokar in Mary Iskra; dalje so še bolane: Mrs. Gorše, Mrs. Arko in Mrs. Poropat. Vsem bolnim želimo, da bi čimprej ozdravele.
V zadnjem tednu je umrl mož naše dobre članice, Mrs. Kejšan. Bog mu daj v miru božjem počivati. O-stali družini pa naše sožalje.
Zadnji teden je tudi umrla novo-rojenlca, granddaughter naše tajnice Vere Bajec. Naše sožalje.
Ker je ta večer bila kratka seja, zato ni bilo drugih važnih poročil in zaključujem moj dopis z lepimi pozdravi in vabilom, da pridete na prihodnjo sejo v večjem številu.

St. 15, Newburg, O. — Seja je bila
11.	marca ob 2 uri pop., kakor jo bilo sklenjeno na letni seji. Vsem sestram, ki ste se seje udeležile prav lepa hvala, toda kje ste bile druge članice, ki ste tam blizu? Odbor sam ne more vsega ukreniti. Naše seje so vsake tri mesece, zato prosim članice, da pridete v velikem številu, saj je podnevi in imamo vedno važne stvari za urediti.
Ko bo to pisanje prišlo v Zarjo, bo že pomlad v svojem prvem cvetju.
V	maju imamo Materinski dan, toda točni čas bo objavljen v A. Domovini.
Zopet smo izgubili 2 članici. Preminula je Mary Horvat naša dolgoletna tajnica in splošno zelo aktivna. Imela je v oskrbi številčno največji vežbalni krožek. Imela je 40 v odrasli in mladinski skupini. To je bilo pred drugo svetovno vojno, ko je Slovenska Ženska Zveza bila na višku svojega delovanja. Naša pokojna Mary Horvat je delala noč in dan za dekleta. Imela je veliki Linen klub, da je bilo mogoče izdelati nove uniforme. Naše članice ji ne morejo poplačati njenega velikega dela z drugim, kakor da jo imajo v dobrem spominu in da molijo za pokoj njene duše. Naj ji Bog in Marija poplačata vsa njena dobra dela. Naj ji bodo te vrstice poklonjene v lep spomin.
Dalje je nenadoma umrla članica, Katherine Kirtley, ki je zapustila 3 hčerke. Obema naj sveti večna luč. Sorodnikom pa naše iskrene sožalje!
Kolikor jaz vem so bolne, Alojzija Černe, ki je že malo boljša. Tudi njo je zadel mrtvoud. Želimo ji ljubega zdravja, kakor vsem drugim, ki so na bolniški postelji. Naj vas Bog usliši!
V blagajno so darovale: Al. Ličan, Anna Glivar, M. Papeš, Jos. Gliha in J. Resnik. Vsem prav lepa hvala.
Še enkrat toplo priporočam, da pridete na prihodnjo sejo v juniju, ki bo važna. Vsem članicam Zveze želim obilo uspeha v delu za nove članice. Pozdrav vsem članstvu SŽZ.
Mary Filipovič
Ob zaključku tega dopisa, sem i-zvedela, da je umrla tudi članica Helen Mirtič, stara 81 let. Bila je prav dobra dolgoletna članica. Naj ji bo lahka ameriška gruda!
V bolnici je tudi že več tednov ustanoviteljica naše podružnice, Josephine Gliha. Ne more nič stopiti na noge in Dr. Perko ne ve kaj je njena bolezen. Upamo, da nič resnega in da bo kmalu ozdravela! M. F.
Št. 17, West Allis, Wis. — Dne 16.
marca smo imele redno mesečno sejo v novi cerkvi Marije P. K. V spodnji dvorani je lep in zelo pripravni prostor za seje. Vse je čisto in lepo urejeno.
Seja je bila precej zanimiva in u-deležba je bila velika. Sklenile smo, da bomo z busom imele izlet, najprej bomo šle v Oglesby, Ul. in na drugo vožnjo gremo na Midwest Tournament Indy, Hoosier Town.
Sporočati moram tudi žalostno novico, da smo izgubile zvesto članico in mojo osebno prijateljico, Sopliie Moze. Zadela jo je kap in v petih dneh je odšla za vedno od nas. Mnogo let je keglajala z nami in bile smo vedno vesele, kadar smo bile skupaj. Bog ji daj večni mir in večna luč naj ji vedno sveti.
Na seji smo tudi določile, da bomo šle z busom v mesecu septembru v Willard, Wis. Ogledale si bomo kako je na farmali in na njihovih njivah. Enkrat v septembru bomo imele tudi kartno zabavo v korist podružnice. Točni dan bo določen pozneje. Vabljene vse že sedaj in iskreno dobrodošle!
V	našo sredo je pristopila Mally Mathea, katero smo z veseljem sprejele. Ona je še mlada in bo lahko mnogo dobrega storila za krožek in Zvezo.
Zelo me veseli, da nabirka za slovensko kapelo tako lepo napreduje, čestitam vsem, ki ste vzelo to težko delo na svoja ramena. Jaz želim vsem in sami sebi, da bi dočakale tisti dan, ko dovršijo kapelo in da lahko gremo prisostvovati blagosloviti te lepe slovenske zamisli.

Podružnice št. 19, Eeveleth, Minn-nesota pošilja vsem materam najlepše pozdrave in želje, da bi v zdravju dočakale še mnogo let. Bog plačuje vse dobro in z blagoslovi osreča družine.
Te vrstice poklanjam v imenu podružnice vsem glavnim odbornicam in članicam SŽZ.
Našim materam v spomin
V	majniku se praznuje najlepši dan, ki je posvečen vsem materam. Poklic Matere je tako lep, tako važen, da se brez njega na moremo predstav-ujati obstoja človeške družbe. Imejmo ljubezen in spoštovanje, do svojih mater, da vam ne lo žal, ko bo prepozno. Na ta dan se tudi spominjamo mater, katere krije črna zemlja. Za umrle matere, darujmo duhovne šopke in molitve.
Z žalostjo v srcu se nas bo večje število pripelo nageljne tia dan ter s tem označimo, da naše ljube matere ni več med živimi. Z veseljem si boste pripela rdeč nagelj na prsi ter oznanile, da mati še živi. Glavni namen tega dne je napraviti mater veselo in ponosno za družino.
Obenem želim naši materi ZVEZI, da bi pridobila lepo število novih članic. Matere razveselite Zvezo ter vpišite svoje hčerke, ker to bo najbolj pomemben dar organizaciji.
Mrs. Antonia Mengar
Na seji v maju se bomo tudi me članice spomnile vseh živih in umrlih mater. Pogrešale bomo našo predsednico Mrs. Nemgar in zapisnikarico Mrs. Sterle in druge aktivne sosestre, ki so nas za vedno zapustile. Pokojna Mrs. Nemgar mi je bila kot mati in sem jo pogostokrat obiskala v Nursing Home, kjer sva se lepo pogovarjale njej je bil vsak obisk hvaležno sprejet Zapustila je štiri hčere in tri sinove, vsi odrasli in poročeni. Svojim hčerkam in snaham je vedno naročala, da naj bodo zveste članice Zveze. Doma je bila iz vasi Retje v Loškem Potoku. V Ameriki je bila čez 65 let, in si pridobila mnogo prijateljev z njenim lepim vedenjem. Svečan pogreb je pričal, Itako visoko so jo cenili vsi meščani. Njena krsta in prostor v pogrebnem zavodu je bil poln krasnih vencev. Svojo blago dušo jo izdihnila 11. dec. 1068.
V	spominu mi bo za vedno ostala paša zapisnikarica Frances Sterle, ki je bila ena izmed zvestih članic Zveze. Zapustila nas je lansko leto, toda vsi, ki smo jo poznali in radi imeli si ne moremo predstavljat, da ni več med nami. Njen mož je umrl pred 25. leti in umrla sta tudi dva sina za srčno hibo. Oba sta služila v vojski in se srečno vrnila, toda Hta bila nenadoma poklicana v večnost.
Dal Bog vsem pokojnini materam dobro plačilo za njihova dobra dela, katerih je bilo mnogo na svetu.
Več naših mater-članic se nahaja na bolniški postelji. Vsem želimo, da bi Vam ljubi Bog pomagal k zdravju. Približujejo se topli in sončni dnevi, ki tudi vplivajo na dobro zdravje, Bog daj!
Drage sestre:	mirno spa vajte v
hladnih gomilah. Smrtna kosa se dostikrat oglasi nepričakovano v naših sredah. Naša podružnica bo vedno ohranila v spominu vse zveste, preminile članice, ker dobra dela nikdar ne izumrejo zato storimo, kar največ je v naših močeh za procvit naše Zveze!
Posebno ostane živ spomin in Vaše zanimanje za napredek podružnice, ker ste vpisale svoje hčerke, ki se bodo mnoga leta spominjale, na materino skrb za njihov dobrobit. Pokojne matere so v svojih zadnijh dneh življenja poudarjale, da je važno in spoštovanja vredno biti članica Zveze.
Na svetu nihče ne ve, kdaj se bo oglasila smrt in nam bo vzela drage. Pokojna sestra Sterle je ob smrti zapustila dve hčeri in sina, toda štiri mesece po njeni smrti je svet zapustila njena hčerka Mary Hoppa. Tako sta v kratkih štirih mesecih, mati in hči zapustili svoje sorodnike in se preselili v kraj, kjer je večno veselje.
Na Materinski dan se spominjamo vseh naših pionirk, ki so v življenju posvetile mnogo zanimanja za rast naše podružnice. Med temi so bile posebno agilne sestre Elizabeth Ra kovetz, Mrs. Skrinner in Mrs. Josephine Prlmozich. Naj bo ljubi Bog vsem preminulim dober plačnik. Saj se bomo tudi me, druga za drugo preselile na oni svet, kjer se bomo enkrat snidle s pokojnimi.
Ponovno želim vsem pri Zvezi, da bi veselo praznovale Materinski dan. Naši ustanoviteljici Mrs. Prisland naj bodo tem potom izrečene iskrene čestitke k krasno urejeni novi knjigi, ktero bi morali imeti v vsakem domu. Knjige imam na rokah in vam toplo priporočam nakup! MATERINA LJUBEZEN IN VESELO SRCE
Tla, v katerih pravo vzgojno delo posebno dobro uspeva, sta materina ljubezen in veselo srce.
Kakor potrebuje telo novorojenčka več toplote nego človek v poznejših letih, tako potrebuje otroška duša tudi več ljubezni. “Topli žarki materinske ljubezni naj zbude in razvijejo v otroku zmožnost ljubezni”, pravi poznavalec duše Alban Stolz. V resnici, z ljubeznijo zbujena ljubezen do matere in očeta je prva ovira sebičnosti pri otroku. Ljubezen materina je vrelec, iz katerega srka mlada duša moč za razvoj. Dobrota materina uči otroka tudi dobrote napram drugim. Otrok vidi mater, da skrbi za njegove potrebe, pa hoče tudi sam skrbeti za reči in osebe krog sebe: deček za igračo, za zajčka, psička, jagenjčka, za sestrico, deklica za punčko, mucko, za mlajšo sestrico ali bratca. Sočutje materino, kadar ji toži
o	svojih bolečinah, ga učf občutiti tujo bol in bridkost.
Prav tako potrebno za plodouosno vzgojno delo je veselo srce. Kakor nas modro, jasno nebo dviga in zbuja v nas vesela čuvstva, tako vpliva materina veselost prav ugodno na o-troka. Kaj ve otrok o žalosti? Kaj razume o skrbeh? Da se uči pogumno in zaupljivo gledati v življenje, mu mora mati kazati vedro lice; s pri-jasno, mirno potrpežljivostjo naj se zanima za njegove misli in nagnjenja. Solnčna vedrost njene duše vpliva oživljajoče kot pomladanski vetrič na otroško srce: popje vsega dobrega se v njem odpira, zbuja mu veselje do učenja in poslušnosti.
tako medsebojno razumevanje in prijateljstvo, kakor ravno pri nas v Združenih Državah. Posebno še ko se dve stranki nasprotnega političnega mnenja pomerijo pri volitvah, nato se eden poslovi in drugi nastopi. Lepo je tudi bilo, ko je novi preds. Nixon šel na obisk bivšemu predsedniku in igral na klavir njune pri-ljublejene melodije. Svetu pač pokažemo, da smo v Ameriki, združeni pri vodstvu naše velike države.
V	tem času, ko to pišem, vidimo na TV žalostni pogreb našega pri-ljublenega general DWIGHT D. El-SENHOWER-ja, kateremu je med vojno bilo dano vodstvo naše armade, ki nas je pripeljala do zmage. Častno je rešil svojo nalogo, za kar mu je lahko bil hvaležen sleherni državljan in tudi zavezniki bi mu morali biti hvaležni, da jih je rešil poguba. Bil je miroljubni predsednik. Spominjajmo se ga kot velikega moža naše dobe.
Umrla je naša 40 letna članica, Mary Vlasich, v lepi starosti 79 let. Priporočena je bila po pok. Anna Pluth. — Bila je dolgo bolna in pred
Nikdar naj torej mati ne pozabi čarovnih sil uspešne vzgoje: materinske blagohotnosti in solnčne radosti.
Seveda je materi marsikdaj težko, posvečati se otrokem z veselim srcem; toda 6e se njim na ljubo premaguje, dobiva vedno več oblasti nad samo seboj. Kdor druge pravilno vzgaja, izpopolnjuje lastno vzgojo. To je posebno potrebno za mlado mater, ki je komaj odrasla nežni dekliški dobi. — Nekatere matere naravnost privzgajajo v otrocih neposlušnost, trmo, razne muhe, in hibe značaja. Često kljub dobri volji ne vedo, kaj naj z otrokem počno, kaj naj store v tem ali onem slučaju. Lastna vzgoja v njih domači hiši je bila menda nedostatna in nadaljevalnih šol, ki bi poučevale odrasla dekleta o vzgoji otrok, še vedno nimamo. Zato naj bi vsaj tisto, kar pišejo o vzgoji pri nas knjige in listi, naše bodoče matere z vso resnobo proučevale!

Naša podr. ji je izkazala poslednjo čast z molitvijo ob krsti in spremstvom na zadnji poti na pok. Sv. Jožefa. Naše sožalje žalujoči družini, pokojni pa naj sveti večna luč. — Naše sožalje tudi družini pok. Frances Likar, ki je umrla v bolnišnici. Njena hči, Mary Lopynski je naša dolgoletna čla.

Na naši prihodnji seji dne 18. maja, bomo počastile našo mater leta, Emmo Nosse, našo nadzornico. Ona je dobro poznana med nami zaradi dobrih del, ki jih vrši. Želimo ji še mnogo let med nami. Počastili bomo tudi vse matere naše podružnice. Ena bo srečna, ker bo dobila door prize. Lunch se bo serviral, kakor druga leta. Bo mnogo dobrot, zato pridite vse!
Ses. Marie Michell, ki je redovna sestra pri Maryknoll nad 20 let, je lepo predavala na naši zadnji seji v marcu o življenju v Chile, kjer deluje že od leta 1960. Ona je hči naših faranov Mr. in Mrs. John Gre-gorich z Vine St. in sestra župnika na St. Andrew’s fari, Rev. John Gre-gorich ter sestra dr. Carla Gregori-cha. Njena svakinja Marian, je tudi naša članica. Serviral se je prigrizek in bilo je prijetno razpoloženje. Dobitek je dobila sestra M. Michell. Gre nazaj skozi Calif, in Mehiko. Lepo potovanje ji želimo In srečno svidenje čres pet let.
Poročevalka in zapisnikarica je sporočila, da je prodala več knjig FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA. Ta knjiga je zelo zanimiva in bi vsaka hčerka morala imeti to knjigo in se ne izgovarjati, da je samo za starejše članice. Nudite mladini (o knjigo in boste videle kako drag spomin jim bo taka knjigva za god ali kako drugo priliko. To bo izredna izbirka za domačo knjižnico ne samo starejšim, ampak tudi mladini članicam. Torej telefonirajte 72-38563, pa Olgi Ancel na 72-30882. Hvaležni moramo biti Mrs. Prisland, ki si je vzela čas in potrpljenje, da je spisala tako knjigo, ki bo krasila čitalnice in bo služila bodočim rodovom.
Naše čestitke soprogom naših članic, ki so zmagali v zadnjih volitvah, 1. aprila. Mr. John Jevetz je bil izvoljen za Town Clerk, Dick Težak za supervisor, Norman Lilek za county auditor, Paul E. Breize za Park Board in Val Gale za county collector. Zelo nam je pa žal, da je samo za nekaj glasov izgubil Robert Verbiscar, sin naše članice Agnes. Upam, da bo prihodnjič bolj uspešen, kakor je bil že poprej. Še enkrat lepe čestitke in mnogo uspehov pri njihovem delu.
Hitrega okrevanja želimo Mary Westmantel, ki si je zlomila nogo pri padcu iz lestve ter Helen Golobich.

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Prazniki so že za nami. Odslej bomo imeli toplejše vreme, približala se je zelena pomlad. Ne bo dolgo, ko bo tukaj poletje in vroče vreme in se lahko pričakuje precej vročih dni.
Nastopil je že prelepi mesec maj, v katerem slavimo Materinski dan. Pri naši podružnici nismo izbrale častno mater, ker je udeležba na mesečnih sejah tako majhna. Tem potom izrekam vsem materam čestitke in želje, da bi dočakale še mnogo praznikov v zdravju in družinski sreči.
Med nami imamo večkrat žalostne dogodke. Naše globoko sožalje Margareti Perc nad izgubo ljubljene hčerke. Umrla je nenadoma ter zapustila mater in brata. Žalost je zadela tudi sestro Mary Sell in družino, ko je v najlepši starosti 47 let nenadoma umrl mož William. Poleg
žalujoče žene je zapustil mater, hčer, sina, pet vnukov ter tri brate in sestro. Letos so umrle že tri članice: Mary Kastigar, Margaret Perc in Nellie Zakreski. Sestra Zakreski je bila stara 57 let in bolna samo par tednov. Zapustila je moža, Stanley, dva sina in dve sestri od katerih je ena sestra redovnica Mary Immculata, v Frančiškanskem redu in je poučevala v Euclid, Ohio. Naj ljubi Bog podeli vsem pokojnim mir in pokoj ter večno plačilo v nebesih. Vsem preostalim sorodnikom in prijateljem izrekamo globoko sožalje.
Teta štorklja je obiskala družino Loveless ter jim v spomin pustila zalega sinčka. Dekliško ime matere je bilo Maryann Kobal. Čestitke staršem, malčku pa ljubo zdravje.
Težko operacijo je prestala sestra Pavla Vidrich. Operacijo je srečno prestala tudi Maryann Borišek. V bolnišnico se je podala sestra Josephine Radi. Vsem bolnim želimo, da bi kmalu okrevale in se vrnile na svoje domove.
Več članic je zaostalo pri asesmen-tu. Lepo prosim., pridite na prihodnjo sejo in poravnajte svoj dolg. Jaz točno vsak mesec pošljem denar in poročilo na glavni urad. Ne rada vas črtam, ker nihče ne ve, kdaj se pojavi smrt, zato more vsaka članica poskrbeti, da ima plačan asesment drugače ni v dobrem stanju. Lepo prosim, ubogajte prošnjo.

Mesec maj je posvečen materi nebes in zemljo. Njej se priporočamo za zdravje naših še živečih mamic, katere pa že krije hladni grob, molimo za nje, da bi njihove duše uživale rajsko veselje.
V	ta namen bo naša podr. imela sv. mašo v cerkvi Sv. I/jvrenca, tretjo nedeljo, 18. maja ob 11 uri dopoldne za vse žive in mrtve članice. Vsem katerim je le mogoče se udeležiti, ste prijazno vabljene.
Popoldne istega dne bomo praznovale materinski dan in počastile našo zaslužno mater, Mary Vlček. Praznovale bomo skupno z gospodinjskim klubom S.D.D., 10814 na Prince Ave. Za obed bodo pripravile Anna Kresevic in Jennie Bartol ob 2 uri popoldne bo že pripravljeno. Pridite, da Be skupno poveselimo in počastimo Materinski dan. Se še spominjate lanskega letu kako so nas čakali šopki šmarnic in dobro kosilo. Letos bo tudi primerno tako, le pridite ne bo nobeni žal vesele družbo kot so članice gospodinjskega krožka in podr. št. 47.
Žal nam je, da so na bolniški postelji Jennie Gerk, Mary Sholar in Jennie Praznik. Vse tri uradnice podr. V St. Alexis bolnici so bile Anna Pelko in Mary Vidakovič. V St. Vincent’s bolnici je prestala operacijo, Jennie Mezgec, naša družab-
na članica in mama članice Viki Arnsek. Bolane so še: Mary Barbič, Terezija Bizjak, Frances Miklič, Mary Prosen in Mary Lupšina. Želimo vsem bolnim sestram ljubega zdravja, naj ljubi Bog da svojo pomoč, da bi uživale veselo pomlad med svojimi družinami.
Čla. Rose Vatovec je dobila žalostno vest iz domovine, da je umrl brat Ivan Rožanc, invalid kot posledica vojne. — Viki Kočevar je umrl dragi oče po dolgi bolezni. O-beme družinama naše sožalje. Pokojnim pa večni mir in pokoj.

Št. 54, Warren, O. Happy Mother’s Day — srečni Materinski Dan — vsem članicam naše SŽZ. Prišla je pomlad zelena, vse se prebuja iz zimskega spanja. Kakor povsod, tako je tudi pri nas dosti bolezni. Tudi iz Slovenije pišejo, da je bila zima huda.
Naša podružnica bo praznovala materinski dan dne 22. maja. Po zaslugi Louise Vernell smo dobile Quinby Park, na Austin Ave., N. W. ob 6:30 zvečer. To pade na četrtek.
Članice so na februarski seji sklenile, da prinesejo “cover-dish”. Prinesite tudi svoj pribor (krožnik in spada zraven), da ne bo potrebno umivati posode. Prinesite tudi kako malo darilo, da bo več zabave. Pripeljite s seboj hčerke, male ali velike, ker prostora bo dovolj za vse zunaj in znotraj. Torej pridite vse, da se enkrat zopet snidemo.
Sporočam, da se je tajnica preselila v večjo hišo na novem naslovu: Groenmont 4010 S. E.
Sporočati moram tudi žalostno novico, da je nagle smrti preminla hčerka Millie Habich v Sharen General bolnišnici. Millie mlajša zapušča poleg matere, očeta Joe Glavan, moža, sina in hčer, vsi v Farell, Pa. Vsem prizadetim naše iskreno sožalje.
Marion Horvath je še vedno v bol niči, ko to pišem. Počasi ji gre na bolje. Bolana je tudi Frances Bona-zich v Arizoni. Pozdrav njej in Mary De Pilippo v Tex. Vsem bolnim želimo ljubo zdravje.
Iskrene čestitke naši častni preds., Marie Prisland. Vsa čast in priznanje, ko je tako lepo opisala v knjigi Iz Slovenije v Ameriko. Priporočam, da bi vse segle po njej. Lep dar sinovom in hčerkam za praznike, ali rojstni dan, da bodo tudi pozni rodovi vedeli o slovenskem narodu in naših osebnosti, ki so se odlikovali v ponos vsem Slovencem.

Št. 64, Kansas City, Kans. — Naša tajnica je prejela nekaj knjig pod i-menom "FROM SLOVENIA TO AMERICA”, katero je spisala Marie Pris-land. Mislim, da bodo mlajši rojaki kar radi segli po nji, ker jih zanima izvedeti odkod so prišli njihovi starši. Mojim hčerkam se zelo dopade.
Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Lastolich, ki živijo v Washington, D. C., so dobili prvo hčerko. Mr. Lastolich je poročevalec za Kansas City Star. Zale prvoropjenke so veseli in ponosiva sta tudi Mr. in Mrs. Anthony Lastolich v Kansas City. Mrs. Catherine Lastolich je naža tajnica in čestitamo vsem skupaj; novorojenld pa o-bilo sreče in zdravja.
Naše čestitke tudi Mr. in Mrs. Prank Simonich in njihovemu sinu Franku, ki je nadporočnik in je bil od ameriške vlade počaščen in odlikovan. To je dobil zato, ker je s hrabrostjo rešil svoje moštvo, četo vojakov v Vietnamu. S čestitkami tudi želimo mlademu Franku mnogo uspehov v vojaškem stanu.
Prav danes ko pišem te vrstice, je bil v Abiline, Kansas položen k večnemu počitku bivši 34 predsednik in hrabri vojskovodja ameriške armade, general DWIGHT DAVID EISENHOWER. Pokopan je bil z velikimi vojaškimi častmi. Dobremu voditelju naj bo ohranjen trajen spomin. Soprogi in ostali družini iskreno sožalje.
Abilene, Kans. je oddaljen kake 3 ure automobilske vožnje proti zahodu od našega mesta.

Zvezin dan v Pennsylvnia bo v nedeljo 27. julija!
Vabljeni ste vsi od blizu in daleč na Zvezin dan, ki se bo letos vršil v nedeljo 27. julija v Meadow Lands pri podružnici št. 106. Čeprav je to majhna naselbina je pa zelo agilna in že naprej vemo, da bomo lepo sprejeti in imeli prav izvrstno zabavo, ker članice te podružnice so korajžne in marljive. Banket se bo vršil v cerkveni dvorani. Zaznamujte si nedeljo 27. julija za obisk v Meadow Lands! Na svidenje!

Št. 77, Pittsburgh, Pa. Zima se je poslovila od nas. Pomlad je tukaj in vsa narava se je zopet ogrnila v sveže zelenje in nežno cvetje. Tudi v naša srca se je naselila vesela pomlad. Le naše cvetje počasi odpada. Takšni so pač zakoni narave in ko Be približa žena s koso nič ne vpraša, ali je človek pripravljen iti z njo, ali ne; kar vzame svoj plen. Tako je; umikamo se počasi, da napravimo prostor drugim.
Meseca maja bomo zopet slavile obletnico naše podružnice. Vse bo po starem, kakor prejšnja leta, samo prostor bo drugi in je Vam vsem znan, to je St. Mary’s Lyceum, 700 Pressley in Lackkart St., North side. Ponovno prosim, udeležite se te prireditve, katere le morete, točno ob 8 uri zvečer dne 14. maja, to je drugo SREDO v mesecu, kajti na četrtek nismo mogle dobiti.
Ker ne bo seje v juliju, awgustu iu septembru, ste prošene, da pridete na sejo v juniju, posebno še tiste, ki ste bolj po&asne s članarino, da poravnate, ker tajnica mora poslati vsaki mesec na glavni urad. Mnogokrat, mnogokrat moram zalagati in čakati na denar. Lepo bi bilo, da bi plačavale v naprej, ne za nazaj kot se to dogaja sedaj.
Piknik bo 17. julija. Imejte ta dan aaznamovan na 'kuhinskem koledarju. Več o tem pozneje.

The centennial of the Golden Spike ceremony will take place at Promon-tery Point near Ogden, Utah, May 10th. Said ceremony marked the completion of America’s first transcontinental railroad — “an egineer-ing feat watched with awe and wonderment by the entire world.”
Early in American history “Go West, young man, go West” was a magic term. For countless Americans it spelled hardship and danger on the one hand and adventure, freedom and 'a satisfying life on the other.
After the territory between the Atlantic coast and the Alleghenies was filled in, settlers in the early 1800’s poured through the mountains and into the rich valley of the Ohio. The Mississippi and beyond was the next frontier. In the middle of the 1800’s, pioneers pushed beyond the Rockies and settled California and Oregon. However, a vast unsettled territory in the West remained.
Two events encouraged people to move into the last Western territory. The first was the Homestead Act •passed by Congress whereby any I lead of a family could become the owner of a farm or homestead of ICO acres if he lived on it and worked the land for five years.
The second was the building of the first railroad line 'across the con tinent.. It was a dream by men of vision, courage and faith—to link the East and West by railroad. Two companies were organized to build a lailroatl- the Union Pacific to push westward from Omaha, Nebraska and the Central Pacific to build eastward from Sacramento, California.
"To encourage tin plan, the United St'atos government offered to lend generous amounts ot money and to give large tracts of land on each side of the railroad for every mile of track laid. Thus the railroad company which laid the longest stretch of track would receive the most land and money.”
A race began between the two railroads. At the height of the race nearly 20,000 men sweated and toiled. They were beset by scorching heat, blinding snowstorms and hostile Indians, but mile by mile the two roads crept closer together.
The Union Pacific, who won the race easily, crossed flat prairies much of the way and laid 1086 miles of track. The Central Pacific had to cross the western mountains and had laid only 689 miles of track.
Two locomotives—Number 119 of the Union Pacific and Jupiter of the Central Pacific—“touched noses” at Promontory Point on May 10. 1S69. Amid great rejoicing, gold 'and silver
spikes were driven into the final railroad tie. News of the railroad’s completion, flashed by telegraph, a-roused interest around the globe.
A dream come true, it was a major step toward winning the West, providing new, fast, comfortable transportation for a new breed of settler both American and European to populate the vast western wilderness.

I	have been wondering all about you what have you been doing this winter? Do you bowl, belong to a singing group, baton twirlers, cheerleaders? Have you helped to organize any such projects? If not, boys and girls, try hard to have your friends join in some activity, all together, for the Slovenian Women’s Union.
Our Cleveland juniors are happy now that they have successfully con eluded their 196S-1969 Bowling Season. A party was held in April for the 40 children who are regular bowlers. They all have so much fun why don’t you try to do the same?
Also, I want to tell you about our baton twirlers. They are just great. You should see them parade, in their beautiful outfits. Now they have added new capes. I must add that they have good instructors also and they are as I have mentioned, Kathy and Carol Cooke.
Boys and girls, when are any of you going to write to mo? 1 am waiting and a big surprise awaits the first one who sends me a letter for print on this page. We want to hear some news about you and your friends who belong to the S.W.U.

Felt from old hats can be used for this pincushion. Small squares of felt are available at many department stores.
Cut two circles, 3 inches in diameter, for the background. Draw patterns for Figures 1, 2, and 3 on cardboard, and cut out. Figure 1 is 1% inches in diameter, Figure 2 is
2	inches long, and Figure 3 is 1 inch from A to B. Lay each pattern on the felt, mark around it, and cut out the required number of pieces.
Sew the leaves and flowers to the background circle, as shown. Then attach the small centers, using only one stitch of colored thread. Sew the two circles together, leaving a 1-inch opening. Fill with cotton and close the rest of the circle. Scallop a circular piece of felt as decoration a-round the edge, if desired.
Attach Figure 3 at the center of the hack for a hanger.
