Boga, ko molijo, in mamona, ko delajo. 334 | VESTNIK 2016 336 | VESTNIK 2016 338 | VESTNIK 2016 340 | VESTNIK 2016 YEAR OF MERCY PILGRIM SUNDAY All are welcome to come to the Cathedral Basilica of Christ the King, Hamilton for a Year of Mercy Pilgrim-age and pass through the Doors of Mercy on Sunday, October 16th. First Reading Amos 8:4-7 The Lord does not forget a single thing we do. Second Reading 1 Timothy 2:1-8 We are to offer prayers for everyone. Gospel Luke 16:1-13 We are asked to use God’s gifts wisely. “The children of this world are more astute in dealing with their own kind than are the children of light.” Illustration The vast majority of criminal cases in the Unit-ed States are now settled by plea-bargaining rather than jury trial. A plea bargain is an agreement be-tween the prosecutor and the defendant whereby the defendant agrees to plead guilty to a particular charge in return for some concession. It may mean that the defendant will plead guilty to a less serious charge, or to one of several charges, in return for the dismissal of other charges, or it may mean that the defendant will plead guilty to the original criminal charge in return for a more lenient sentence. Some countries ban plea-bargaining as they feel it puts unfair pressure on both guilty and innocent parties. What is clear from research is that innocent parties are less likely to take advantage of plea-bargaining than guilty ones and subsequently suffer more if found guilty, especially as those who contest charg-es are generally given harsher sentences than those who accept at least some guilt to start with. Recent research shows an increased likelihood for innocent people to plead guilty if it means avoiding bail or getting a swifter trial. There is also a sense that true justice goes missing in the transactions that occur. The guilty escape proper punishment and the inno-cent are encouraged to give up their integrity, all for the sake of speed and economy. Gospel Teaching One of the stranger elements of parables is that they can seem at times to be encouraging behaviour that may not be in line with the Gospel message of love and mercy. Kings are harsh; their stewards de-ceitful. The content is not necessarily moral as such. They are rather stories that highlight certain choices and predicaments, with the sting always in the tail. The end of today’s parable has the rich man praising his steward for his astuteness. He has managed to get himself out of a sticky situation by getting his master’s debtors on his side. He may have done this by cutting back on his own commission or he may have reduced what was owed to his master. What matters is his cleverness in avoiding the full conse-quences of his actions. Is he the first known example of plea-bargaining? Jesus does get exasperated at times by his fol-lowers and especially those who claim to be right-eous. He has just told the parable of the prodigal son, a story aimed not so much at the wastrels of the world but at those like the elder son who are self-righteous. He wants his followers to be more imagi-native, more adventurous in pursuing his ways. Why can’t they be as inventive and able in what they be-lieve as those who pursue a more worldly existence? Application What is Jesus asking us to do? He is not asking us to be as deceitful as the steward, for he goes on to say that you have to choose to be the servant either of God or of money. Nor would he be happy to see us forsaking our innocence for the sake of an easier conclusion to life’s challenges. His own life provides us with a clear framework of the courage and honesty he asks of us, whatever the trials put in our way. So what are the skills a follower of Jesus needs that display the same ability or astuteness in matters of the Gospel that the unjust steward re-veals in his commercial dealings? The main quality Jesus highlights, something the unjust steward is certainly not an example of, is trustworthiness. He also asks for freedom from greed and from a devo-tion to riches and money, again the opposite of the unjust steward. After a brief exchange with the Pharisees, who laugh at him for this attitude to money, Jesus will go on to tell the parable of the rich man who ignores the poor man, Lazarus, at his gate. It is those who are poor, not those who are rich, who are the spe-cially chosen friends of God. Ultimately Jesus uses the example of the steward to turn upside down the world and call us to defend with the same energy and passion his new option for those who are poor. This is where we may get confused. We are not to be taken in by the world of the steward. Rather we are to use all our wit and wisdom to promote the values of the Gospel and the recognition of those who are vulnerable and weak in the eyes of that world. NEEDS OF THE CHURCH IN CANADA SEPTEMBER 25 Every year, the Bishops of Canada appeal for financial assistance. This collection helps each diocese make its annual contribution to the na-tional Episcopal Conference and to the respective regional episcopal assembly (in the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario and Western regions). Any addi-tional funds from the collection are at the dispos-al of the diocese for its own pastoral needs. The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops is the national assembly of Catholic Bishops. Con-tributing to this collection is an act of collabora-tion with the Bishops in their ministry of teach-ing, sanctifying and pastoral governance. "Challenges and favours which the Lord gives ... are the ways by which he wanted his Church founded and established by the Apostles and Disciples. This is the same grace he has made to the Church in Canada, by which it has taken all its force and growth, and is sustained and main-tained by patience and long-suffering in peace and union with Our Lord, all as he is pleased to permit:' - SAINT FRANCOIS DE LAVAL, first Bishop of New France, from a letter to the Vicar General of the Diocese of Quebec, 15 February 1686 A Lifeline for Marriage Do you feel alone? Heidy SLOVENSKA ŠOLA - SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLO-VENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, mu-sic, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parents or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and are geared towards the ability of the children. Our Kindergar-ten and Level One programs are geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they con-centrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. - with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Regular classes started on September 17th, 2016 at 9:00 am to 12:30 pm. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continu-ance of our Slovenian identity. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same op-portunity! We look forward to seeing you!
