St. Vitus Slovenian School Benefit Dinner f I ^he echoing halls of St. Vitus school still JL come to life every Saturday morning. Little ones step hand in hand to the second floor while the oldest students easily bound over seven flights to the very top. UV imenu Očeta, in Sina, in Svetega Duha...” and the morning begins. Lessons, meticulously prepared by devoted teachers, revive the language, history, and traditions of the Slovenian heritage just as they have for 48 years. From 9 a.m. to 11:30 students read and sing, write and speak Slovenian while parents linger to converse in the halls below, preserving the bonds of friendship formed in these very same classrooms so many years ago. These are the echoes of the care and devotion of so many who have long supported St. Vitus Slovenian School. The activities of the Saturday morning school and the community events borne out of them, are a single thread in a cherished tap- estry of the Cleveland Slovenian community. Its continuation brings the hope of the preservation of this tapestry for yet another generation. As part of this endeavor, the St. Vitus Slovenian School is hosting its annual benefit dinner this Sunday, February 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal, prepared by the parents and friends of the school, will be served in the St. Vitus auditorium on Glass Avenue. Carry out will be available from 10:30 a.m. in the social room. Tickets can be obtained in advance from the parents of the school or at the entrance of the auditorium during serving times. The families of St. Vitus Slovenian School extend a warm invitation to all who wish to come to its benefit dinner. Those who attend are sure to be pleased to enjoy an excellent meal as well as fellowship with friends, while helping to support and preserve the school. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, FEBRUARY 25, 1999 2 Jim’s Journal By Jim Debevec Phrases I don’t understand: Life insurance, Good Friday, and black ice. Last Sunday in conversation with friends, at least all of them mentioned the terrible black ice on the roads Saturday evening. There must be something wrong with me. Every time I see ice, it’s translucent. The ground beneath it may be black (or orange as in Alabama), but the ice itself is not black. I put water in a tray and place it in the freezer of our refrigerator. Soon it comes out transparent ice. It never comes out black. Where does this black ice come from? I don’t know. I looked it up in the “Word and Phrases Origins” dictionary. Listed there were “black ball,” “black belt,” “blackberry,” “black book,” “black death” (plague), “black eye,” “black-eyed beauty,” “Black Friday,” “black hole,” “black list,” “black magic,” “blackmail,” “blackguard,” “black dog” (counterfeit money), “Black Robe” (Jesuits), “black sheep,” “black power,” and “blacksmith.” But nowhere is there mention of black ice. Anyhow, Sunday afternoon Frank Šega’s family and some friends got together in St. Vitus auditorium for a surprise celebration of Frank’s 75^ birthday. It was a heart-warming occasion as his wonderful family came from near and far to mark the auspicious occasion. A unique table setting was arranged in a “U” shape in the center of the auditorium. A delicious pork chops and chicken dinner was cooked and served. For dessert, Frank’s talented relatives who are superb pastry chefs, cut delicious pieces of unique cakes and other delights the likes of which have never-be fore been seen in the city of Cleveland. Before the meal, Rev. Joseph P. Božnar, pastor of St. Vitus Church, offered the invocation. Son-in-law Eric Snyder, gave the champagne toast in salute to Frank Šega. After dinner, Frank’s daughter, Antonia, hosted a number of Bingo games to the delight of all present. At the conclusion, Frank thanked everyone for the wonderful surprise. He gave special recognition to his guardian angel who had saved him from harm’s way a number of times, and deeply regretted the passing of his wonderful wife and life-long companion, Antonia. While at the gathering, I was fortunate enough to be seated between Tony Oblak and Joseph S. Baškovič. They remarked about the article Bob Debevec had written in last week’s American Home recounting the 1950 snowstorm. Tony remembered being on E. 61st Street when all the neighbors came out and cleaned the snow from the street. Joe said the residents of Bliss Avenue did the same thing. I guess it was a time when neighbors pitched in to get the job done instead of waiting around for the government to come through. This year on television I have seen and heard lawyers say not to shovel the snow from your sidewalk because if someone slips on it, you are liable and may be sued. Jim: Aw, that’s too bad. What did you do. Bob: Well, everybody began unwrapping their candy bars and started eating, and I just sat there drooling. Jim: I know how you feel. I gave up candy for Lent, too. Bob: Oh, well. We just have to bear with it and grind it out. Jim: You’re right. It won’t be too long now. Bob: Just 39 more days to go- Jim: Yes, we did the first day easily enough. Bob: The rest should be a snap. Jim: Easy as cake. Bob: Simple as pie. Jim: Right, those 39 days come and go awful fast. Do you remember any of the Sisters who taught you? I do. My first memory of the “Good Sisters,” is the beginning of my school days, the first grade at Annunciation School. We students were assembled in the school auditorium. Sister Bernadette, our school principal, marched two boys out on the stage. They had tape across their mouths. Sister faced us and said, “These two boys were swearing in the school yard during recess. This is their punishment.” Sister looked at the boys and asked, “Do you promise not to use such language again?” Both boys nodded “Yes.” Rip, rip was the sound my little ears heard as Sister quickly pulled the tape from their mouths. If Sister Bernadette did that today, she would be in Federal prison. My vocabulary is limited, but my swear words are even more limited. And why? I didn’t know those two unfortunate boys, but I did know I was never going to go through what they went through. I didn’t know what swear words were, but I did know I didn’t want any part of learning them. “Thank you sister Bernadette.” all sorts of goodies, living next door to us, My first grade teach# S( was “Sister Naomi.” H# beautiful face matched h# \ heart. Inside the book the pastor found an original poem in five stanzas entitled: “In Praise of the Holy Cross.” Taking a short rest to recover somewhat from the exhaustion, Bishop Slomšek jovially joined the clergy at dinner. Before his departure he also presented himself to the Church committee, allowing them to kiss his ring. He told them that it was the last time they would see him and his prediction proved true. Weakened in body though not in spirit, Bishop Slomšek returned to Maribor to regain some strength. Before long he was again traversing the hilly countryside of his diocese, unmindful of the weather. Upon reaching his destination he would celebrate Mass, preach a sermon, and then administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. Several times he would have to stop to rest awhile to recover from his exhaustion. His priests pleaded with him to suspend his Confirmation tours but their entreaties fell on deaf ears. “I don’t have to continue living, but I do have to perform my duty,” he told them. Quite often he would be obliged to sit during the Confirmation ceremony and after it be carried from the church, but he persevered to the end. He was a man of great will power, always forgetting himself and always keeping the salvation of souls uppermost in his mind. On September 15, 1862 he joined his priests during their retreat at Rogaška Slatina. It lasted four days. As usual, he reserved the first and the last sermon for himself. His introductory talk dealt with an examination of conscience on how they had carried out their duties of state during their life. Especially inspiring was his concluding talk on the enemies of the Church and how to deal with them, and on the love of their country and cultural heritage. At the end of the talk he prayed one “Our Father” in Latin, in thanksgiving for the graces received during the retreat; a second one in German, for the absent brethren; and the third one, in Slovenian, for the one among them who would be the first to die. No one thought it was for the bishop himself. The bishop remained at Rogaška Slatina until the following Sunday when he was scheduled to bless the auxiliary church of Saint Rosalie. Before returning to Maribor he paid a visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of Ptujska Gora. He must have felt that this was to be the last time he would kneel before her altar. He and his parents and sis-ter would listen to programs like l“Jack Benny” and the “Lux Mystery I Theatre.” Now that Fried-I lander has children of his own, he was surprised and delighted recently when he came home to find his family listening to an old radio program—on the family computer. The computer? Yes. It seems that Friedlander’s 13-year-old son, Charles, had entered the query “RealAudio” into the AltaVista Search Service on the Internet. The search led Charles through a series of links to the “Marx Brothers Sound Off Page,” whereupon he was invited to download “RealAudio” software for free. Time Travel Once installed, RealAudio opened up a world of possibilities. The first of these was a 1944 Groucho Marx radio show called “Blue Ribbon Town.” From there, the Friedlanders began exploring hundreds of sites which offer radio on the computer. Among the choices were excerpts from “Jack Benny,” “The Lone Ranger,” “The Jimmy Durante Show,” and a suspense drama called “The Mysterious Traveler.” Among the Friedlander family favorites is a complete episode of “Captain Midnight” and a little known pilot for an Alfred Hitchcock radio program called “Once Upon a Midnight.” Needless to say, the Friedlanders are hooked. A typical night now finds them all surrounding the computer, listening to old-time radio. They have even joined “chat rooms” where they share the location of favorite shows with other members. Ralph Friedlander says that “Conventional Wisdom would have it that the computer is tearing the family apart—drawing each of us off to ‘do our own thing.’ But the complete opposite is happening in our family. The computer is drawing us all back together.” Friedlander says he has not missed the irony that his childhood passion, fueled by an old radio console, is once again a family fascination—this time on a modern PC. “Why my ancestors would rise from their graves,” says Berman, quoting Groucho Marx, “and I’d only have to bury them again.” In future columns: How families learn to read music on the computer, where to find the lyrics to more than 70,000 songs and where to answer all of your questions about healthcare. The Board of Directors welcomes you all to help celebrate this special event. It was in 1914 that our then young Slovenian men and women who came to America at the turn of the century purchased the Die-mer property that was to serve as the first Slovenian National Home. Today this same building after 85 years, stands as a monument to these pioneering people. Enhancing their farsighted ambitions were the second generation Slovenians bom in America, who worked alongside Dad and Mom and helped in the raising of funds for the eventual erection of the building on surrounding grounds. At last, 10 years later on March 1, 1924, the grand celebration and opening of the largest Slovenian Home in the United States, took place. Our beautiful auditorium has been the scene of numerous weddings, parties, socials, dances, fraternal, civic and cultural events. But above all, it has served as the “cradle” of our Slovenian culture. It was here that the Slovenian language was taught for a number of years. It provided the facilities that enhanced the many dramatic, choral and art performances. Slovenian life in Cleveland still focuses around the block-long Slovenian Hall as its hub. Numerous renovations have been made over the years. Also, various celebrations have taken place which revolved directly around the Slovenian National Home. In 1992 the entire hall was renovated and given a new look. Then in 1993 the “Friends of the Slovenian National Home Inc.” had a fund-raiser to restore the Gaspari Curtain which graces our beautiful stage. The year Independence of Slovenia was cele brated at our Hall on June 25, 1996 with the presence of special guest, Mr. Bob Dole. Also, a special event took place on February 15, 1998 which was the Combined Choral Group Concert, accompanied by the Womens’ Cleveland Orchestra. Just recently completed in 1998 was the restroom renovation in the main hall, making it wheelchair accessible. Celebrating this auspicious 75th year Anniversary is a tribute to the founders who laid the foundation upon which we, their descendants, have the privilege to demonstrate our fortitude to nurture the roots of our heritage. It is with great gratitude that the Board of Directors acknowledges the fine response on the part of our supporters and patrons with their donations for the benefit of the Slovenian National Home. —Sylvia Plymesser Slovenian Radio on WCPN A wonderful Slovenian radio show is being broadcast in Cleveland on Saturday evenings, at 9 p.m. on WCPN-90.3 FM hosted by Tony Ovsenik. Father Kocin enthusiastically blessed the crowd with generous sprinklings of unholy eau de toilette from his bucket while shy Micka displayed her feminine attributes for all to admire. The wedding ceremony, definitely under the gun, was performed on stage by Cardinal Kozlevchar wearing his red cap and flowing vestments, while music was provided by accordionist Jim Kozel. The happy event was brought to a satisfying conclusion by Vickie Kozel who led us all in the singing of “Slovensko Dekle” and “Sinoči je pela.” Following the “wedding,” Dom and Val Cekada, along with Mitzie Urbanic, provided us with a 3 course snack (if not a wedding meal, certainly a great Valentine treat!), bringing our February meeting to a most satisfying and memorable end. As was mentioned, there was, in fact, a business part to the afternoon’s activities. President John Kozlevchar reminded us that we have until the March meeting to pay our 1999 dues of $6.00. Don’t forget to take care of 5 this matter or you will lose your membership. John also explained that in the near future the Board will develop a quarterly “Activity Report” for us, listing all the various Slovenian activities scheduled during that period. This should help us plan ahead and keep us from missing out on any special events. We certainly look forward to that and appreciate the consideration. Fran Kajfez announced a tour scheduled for Palm Sunday, March 28th. It involves a trip to Pittsburgh to see the Passion Play, “Veronica’s Veil.” Included will be a meal and a tour of the more than 50 different ethnic rooms at the University of Pittsburgh. Cost is $42.25. Please contact Fran soon at 1-440-944-3697 if you are interested. These trips always fill up quickly. Finally, member Antoinette McGrath, who for so long, gave us monthly reports on local Collinwood news, has been in and out of the hospital for quite a while. She recently called to say that she has returned “home” and would love to hear from her HAP friends. He was always in contact with the local government officials to ensure that his community would be a better place to live. It’s no wonder that an integral community group was organized right in his own tavern establishment back in 1955. The Perry Home Owner’s Improvement Association had its initial meetings at his Mello Bar at 7508 St. Clair Avenue and still functions today as a key community organization which also publishes a Perry News monthly newspaper. The Mello Bar was a prime neighborhood establishment for many community gatherings and Hraster operated the tavern for some 35 years from 1951 to 1986, when he retired. In addition, he operated the Parker Hardware right next door to the tavern for 15 years. In the years to follow, this strong St. Clair community booster would also be an integral part serving as vice president of the St. Clair Business Association that promoted better street lighting, tree planting, a new area super market, and even a “Little Europe Festival.” He also urged officials to renovate the old St. Clair In Memory Tony and Val Baznik of Euclid, Ohio renewed the subscription for Sister Margaret Mary Per, S.N.D., plus enclosed an additional $20.00 in memory of John and Mary Per. By the way, the tavern was known for its good food including his famous corn beef sandwiches. Although a lifelong member of St. Vitus parish where he attended grade school, he would later move to the E. 185^ Street area on Arrowhead Avenue in the early 1990s and continue his community service devoting much of his assistance to good friend Tony Petkovšek, local WELW radio personality and helping Tony to move his annual Thanksgiving weekend polka extravaganzas to downtown Cleveland where it has functioned for going on 10 years. He was responsible for making initial contacts at these establishments and then serving as the hospitality chairman of these notable events, conducted by Petkovsek’s committee, the Cleveland Slovenian Radio Club. He would also become very active with the Collinwood community Waterloo Beach Association, the former E. Here’s what you should know to protect yourself this winter. Hypothermia occurs when your internal body temperature drops lower than normal as a result of being in a cold environment— indoors or out. Babies, people in poor health and the elderly can easily become hypothermic. Symptoms can range from constant shivering, urge to urinate, confusion and sleepiness to muscle stiffness, slurred speech and trouble seeing. You can help a victim of hypothermia by taking the person to a dry, warm place and warming the person with blankets or your own body heat. Frostbite occurs when the skin freezes as a result of low temperatures, wet clothes, or even forceful winds. Fingers, toes, earlobes, cheeks and nose have the greatest exposure to cold and are most likely to be affected. Frostbite ranges from white or yellowish skin accompanied by an itching or burning sensation, to numbness and reddened or swollen skin. Severe frostbite symptoms include blistering and hardened skin. To help a frostbite victim, get the person to a warm, dry place and remove constrictive clothing. Raise affected areas and apply warm moist compresses to these areas. Do not rub frostbitten areas or apply direct heat. ■ ■ ■ Wearing a hat can prevent the loss of up to 20 percent of total body heat. With hypothermia and frostbite, medical attention should be sought as soon as possible. Dr. Elaine Josephson of the American College of Emergency Physicians wants you to stay warm in the colder months with these tips: • Limit your exposure to cold and go indoors if there’s any doubt you’re too cold. • Eat plenty of food and stay as active as possible. • Be careful of things that restrict your circulation—smoking, tight clothing and fatigue. Ask your doctor if medication you’re taking can affect your circulation, and limit your hot toddies! Alcohol also affects your circulation. • Dress in multiple layers of clothing to trap warm air between layers. • Wear a hat outside. It can prevent up to 20 percent of total body heat loss. Bil si ljubeč in dober mož svoji zlati ženki Mariji, dober oče vajinim štirim otrokom in stari oče petim vnukom. Bil si zvest in delaven faran župnije Marije Vnebovzete v Clevelandu, kjer si nam ob prihodu k nedeljski maši tolikokrat ves nasmejan prijazno stisnil roko v pozdrav. 1999 netom, Marjanco in Davidom in do danes s petimi vnuki. Kako si jih vse ljubil in kako si bil ponosen nanje! Niso mi znane vse podrobnosti, a slučajno sem pred leti shranil dokument, kjer piše, da si sredi avgusta 1957. le-ta v Parizu dobil zaposlitev v tovarni mesnih izdelkov. Po nekaj dneh so jih ponoči peš odgnali v Jelendol in tam pobili. Spomladi 1944 so izkopih 186 teh žrtev. Nato so jih pobili. Grobovi so označeni. Stoji pokopališki križ in žrtve so pokopane. Grobovi so delno označeni. Medvojne in povojne žrtve so prikazane tabelarično. Vse to me je precej prestrašilo. Znova me je silil, naj pijem. Milena Zadravec in piše: “Predraga! Ravnokar sem sprejela Vaše pismo in darilo od MZA. Mi smo v najrevnejšem delu mesta Kairo - v glavnem so tukaj pravoslavni kristjani in muslimanci. Še nekaj dobrotnikov imam, katere moram obelodaniti: Dramatsko društvo Lilija $100; A. Gad $20; M. Celestina (Koper) $200; Pristavski upokojenci (sv. maše) $100; R. Knez $100; M.M. Kosem $400; M. Celestina (Rev. Opeka $150, sv. maše +Jože Skala $50) $200; N.N. $100; A.E. Cupar $50; A. Tushar (Vipava) $50; L. Bohinc $20; A. Dragar (bogos. A. Jemec $50, Ij. sem. $50) $100; Ivan Podobnikar, M.D. (sv. maše Rev. J. Puhan) $250.
