Expanded Historical Dictionary of Slovenia
LJUBLJANA, Aug. 9 - A historian heading the probing work at a mass grave near Slovenia’s second-largest city, Maribor, confirmed reports that it was one of the biggest if not the biggest post-World War II mass grave in Slovenia.
According to Mitja Ferenc,

craters, which were also used to dump the bodies of those executed,” said Ferenc.
Hew said the mass grave near Maribor is similar to those elsewhere in Slovenia. The remains of victims are found buried about a meter to a meter-and-a-half under the ground. Asked whether the mass grave in Maribor also contains the remains of women and children, Ferenc said the objects found alongside the human remains suggested that those killed were for the most part soldiers. He said the probes were being used only for checking the presence of bones rather than for more detailed analysis.
Ferenc said the work on the excavation of the antitank ditch had been started in the 1990s but stopped in 1999 due to the wishes of the Slovenian Motorway Company (DARS), which was in a hurry to finish a highway section there.
However, fresh construction work on the motorway is not expected to hinder the excavation, as the highway will run alongside the ditch. He said the excavation efforts headed by the government Commission for Concealed Mass Graves now had sufficient funding to push ahead.
The book entitled “Joze Plečnik v Ljubljani in Sloveniji” (Joze Plečnik in Ljubljan and Slovenia) includes descriptions of some 30 examples of Plecnik’s work in Slovenia and especially in Ljubljana, with photographs, city maps and other useful information.
According to Ferenc, the authorities have “promised a lot” but “delivered very little over the last 16 years,” in this respect. He said‘a total of 550 potential locations have been earmarked for probing, with only a minor share actually having been checked so far.
Much work awaits the commission, which is counting on the assistance of the state, Ferenc told the press. He said the completion of the excavation work was important for expressing reverence to the victims.
The Slovenian team is being assisted by a group of Croatian experts, since the majority of the victims are thought to be Croatian.
Zelimir Kuzatko, head of a Croatian group studying the fate of Croatians who were killed in the Bleiburg massacre after the end of WWII, said the grave probably also contained Montenegrin and Serbian victims, as well as Slovenian and other victims of Communist slaughter.
He said he was convinced the ditch contained not only the remains of men in uniform, but also women and children and that his estimates suggest the number of people buried here was well over 15,000.
The Ljubljana-born Plečnik (1872-1957) studied at the Vienna Art Academy. In 1920, he was appointed as the architect to head the renovation of Prague’s castle.
Plecnik’s legacy in Vienna, where he created his earliest work, include several residential houses and the Church of the Holy Spirit in the district of Ottakring.
Plečnik drew the plans for several major Ljubljana landmarks, including the National and University Library, Zale cemetery complex, the triple bridge across the Ljubljanica river and the market alongside the river’s banks.
As many new states have emerged in Europe in the 1990s, the Scarecrow Press, a U.S. academic and reference publisher, began publishing The Historical Dictionary series on Europe in 1993. Each “dictionary” is in essence a mini-encyclopedia of various aspects of life of individual European states.
Among them, Historical Dictionary of Slovenia first appeared in 1996 as No. 13 in the series. It was the first encyclopedia of the new State, written by two scholars Leopoldina Plut-Pregelj and Carole Rogel, providing basic information on the population, geography, history, politics, economy, society and culture through the historical lens.
The second expanded and updated edition of the Dictionary (No. 56), by the same
authors, was published in June, 2007. Jon Woronoff, the series editor, writes in his forward to this edition:
“But it is impossible to comprehend today’s Slovenia without harking back to other times when it was a part of Yugoslavia or a dependency of the Habsburg Empire. Without knowing more about where Slovenia is coming from, it is impossible to fathom where it is going. This information is imparted here through numerous dictionary entries, a chronology and introduction, a list of acronyms and a very useful bibliography.”

It’s Celebration Time

It’s harvest time, it’s celebration time; it’s enjoyment time, as the rewards of the long hot summer’s work ripen, as we taste the fresh grown crop, as all enjoy the abundant blessings that is ours in this beautiful season we call Fall. Planting season started near the end of May and harvest season is now upon us.
There is another celebration going on, but it took longer than a three-month growing season, and it is a celebration of a spiritual nature, that is, a spiritual harvest. In this year the 35lh since our first Polka Mass was celebrated, we are with joy, as we celebrate the 40lh year of the ordination to the Catholic priesthood of Father George Balasko of the Youngstown Diocese, and pastor of St. Ann Parish in East Liverpool, Ohio, and starting the year of Saint Paul.
Now, how do you celebrate such a milestone of a life dedicated to Almighty God? This is the way Father George is going to do it. -On Sunday, Sept. 23 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Paul Monastery, 9531 Akron-Canfield Rd. -
Rt. 224 - Canfield, Ohio, he will celebrate a Slavic Folk Liturgy - Polka Mass, with the Wayne Tomsic Combo. The Polka Mass will be celebrated on CTNY-TV. The public is invited. Concert will follow at the church veranda. Bring lawn chairs and refreshments. Ice cream social to follow.
In the 35lh year of the Polka Mass, there may yet be some who have not loved our Lord with their whole heart and with their whole soul and with their whole Slavic heritage, as I have experienced, as my mom, dad, brothers and sisters, uncles, aunts and cousins, all standing with me at the Polka Mass, as I pray this special Mass for all who died long before the accordion combo, helped lift our voices up to Our Lord in praise, with the songs I remember my family singing, the songs they brought from a distant Slavic land of their birth, now my heritage.
Indeed this is not an every day occasion, and I am looking forward to it. I’ve got it marked on my calendar as happy time Mass with Father George and friends. If I see you, I’ll say hello. You do the same.

Tony Petkovšek’s New Time on Radio
The popular and longest running daily polka programs of Tony Petkovšek which features a Slovenian theme will now be heard daily from 2 to 4 p.m. (from September on) and Saturdays still at 12 noon. The weekend show will be expanded a bit, adding an additional half-hour until 2:30 p.m. every Saturday.
The self-produced shows include sponsorship by local businesses and Slovenian fraternal societies and have been a mainstay since 1961, based in Cleveland. They are heard world-wide on the internet at 24/7 polka-heaven.com in addition to the Lake County based 1330 AM, WELW (WELW.com).
Tony features Alice Ku-har’s recipes and traditions twice weekly; Duke Marsic’s Slovenian News report on Saturday as compiled and translated by Paul Borštnik; Mark Tome with modern alternative music on Saturdays; and Patty Sluga has a Monthly women’s interview Portion, plus a variety of polka music daily broadcast including occasional Croa-
tian selections. Beginning in September a new 15 minute portion will be dedicated to the Istrian Community Saturdays at 2:15 p.m.
From time to time, Tony is on a Kollander Travel tour or cruise and Ed Ostry fills in. The radio program has always evolved around the many happenings in the community news segments broadcast daily as a public service.
The 4 p.m. hour on WELW will become a new dimension for WELW with “Lake Effect Radio” presenting different features on a daily basis.
In November, Tony Petkovšek will mark an unprecedented 46 years on the air daily with his usual Thanksgiving weekend downtown at the Marriott Hotel with the cooperation of the Cleveland Slovenian Radio Club committee. The National Cleveland-Style Polka Hall of Fame based in Euclid also features its annual awards show and a winners dance on the Saturday of Thanksgiving.

Telbans Use 100-Year-old Baptismal Gown
Congratulations are in order for Dave and Tanya Telban. A new son, “David.” was bom on his grandmother, Julia (Telban) Plav-van’s 80lh birthday, April 15th. What a gift, not only for her, but for Dave, Tanya and little Kristina, age 2 as well.
The adage, “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,” though used for weddings, can be applied to the Christening of the new David. He wore a baptismal gown that was made 100 years ago by his greatgrandmother, Mary Telban, when she was 16... a lovely dress, slip and coat... still in excellent condition.
It has become a family tradition to use this gown, and has survived 34 baptisms.
The proud father, Dave Telban, wore it, as did his dad. All members in his family and now, the new baby David, wore it.
Kathy Telban, family historian, granddaughter of Mary Telban, said Marie (Telban) Kovačič, wife of
former well known 23rd Ward Cleveland Councilman and Transit Board member, Edward Kovacic, was the first to wear the gown in 1910. The dress was made in 1907 but two children never lived to wear it.
Marie Kovacic came to Cleveland with the gown in her possession in 1928 from Forest City, PA. She was hired by the Grdina Bridal Shop as a seamstress. She married Edward J. Kovacic in 1936 and thus began the “Touring Life of the Baptismal Outfit.”
Nancy Kovacic, wife of former Detective Edward Kovacic, Jr., is now the “Keeper of the gown,” a seamstress in her own right. She maintains the “life” of the gown. Other than very minor repairs, nothing has had to be replaced or redone. The “yellowing” that usually comes with age, has not happened. It still has its original due - True White.
The baptism took place in the oratory of Our Lady of Angels Church on Rocky River Drive with about 40
relatives and friends in attendance with little David sleeping through the whole ceremony... ho hum.
Rev. Father John J. Cre-gan, remarked that in his many years as a priest, he had baptized prisoners, policemen and firemen, etc., but NEVER anyone wearing a 100-year-old gown.
An outdoor reception followed at the home of the proud parents, Dave and Tanya on Silsby Avenue, truly a day of remembrance.
Coverage of this special day appeared in the Plain Dealer’s Metro section and for many who read it, probably did not realize that Dave Telban was bom and raised on East 60th Street, went to St. Vitus School, his family being very active in the St. Clair/St. Vitus area.
God bless you and yours. Enjoy your family’s every moment, for too soon, they will grow up and leave the nest.

Fairport Founders review good old days at Slovenian Club celebration
A lot of history from the “Old Days” was exchanged as the four living founders of the Fairport American Slovenian Club gathered to celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary. They are (from left) Frank Zalek, Herman Kapel, Charles Kapel, and Frank Modic.
The four were recognized for their pioneering work at the Club during a brief pro
gram on Sunday, August 12. The program followed a Polka Mass celebrated by Bishop Edward Pevec.
Following the program music was provided by the Don Wojtila Band. Some 250 members and friends attended the successful festivities that were held at the Club grounds.

Coming Events
The National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2007 Crystal Awards. The Award recipients will be announced at Awards Show XX, on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Euclid High School Auditorium, Euclid, Ohio.
The Lifetime Achievement, the highest honor bestowed by the organization, has four nominees. They are: Dick Flaisman, Gaylord Klančnik, Frank Mullcc, Hank Thunander.
Dick Flaisman has been a leading saxophone and clarinet player for nearly 60 years. He has recorded on more than 100 albums. He is a resident of Willoughby Hills, Ohio.
The late Gaylord Klančnik was a popular bandleader and accordionist in Michigan and surrounding states. He recorded several albums with his orchestra and as a guest artist. He lived in the Detroit area.
Frankie Mullec, an accordionist and bandleader, made his mark in the late 1940s and 50s. He recorded several hit songs that sold about a quarter-million records. He also composed several popu-
lar polkas. He lives in Wick-liffe, Ohio.
Hank Thunander is well-known in the northern Midwest region. A bandleader and accordionist, his playing career has covered four decades. He is from St. Paul, Minnesota.
Six songs have been nominated for two awards as Greatest All-Time Hit Songs. There are five polkas and one waltz. The polkas nominated arc: Barking Dog, El Rio Drive, Pony Tail, Squeezers, and Zip Polka. The waltz nominated is: Roses of Love.

SAN FRANCISCO -Stanka Pecavar, one of the most active women in the Church of the Nativity parish and Slovenian community in San Francisco, died on Friday, May 18 after a short but grave illness. She was 66 years old. We are deeply saddened to have lost a dear member and a pillar in our community, and our hearts go out to her family for their grave, sudden loss.
Stanka was born on Feb. 9, 1941 into the esteemed Stefan family in Gornji Suhor, Slovenia, as the fourth of five children to father Joseph and mother Katarina Nemanič. When she was 19-years-old, she decided to follow her sister Katica and Katica’s husband Franci Pecavar as they fled from communism in their homeland to live in France. On her own, she secretly fled to Trieste, Italy. From there, her brother-in-law took her to Paris where they lived together for 10 months. Then, on the invitation of relatives, they all moved to San Francisco.
In early 1964, Franci’s brother, Peter Pecavar from Stranska vas, near Semič, Slovenia, came to visit. His earlier friendship with Stanka in their homeland blossomed into a romance in America, and on January 9, 1965 the two were married in the Church of the Nativity
and made home in San Francisco. With their diligent hands, they established a solid foundation for a good life. Peter, with his brother Franci, owned a construction business, and Stanka gave him full support in this endeavor.
While raising their sons Peter (1966) and Johnny (1969), Stanka found a job in a prestigious club in the center of San Francisco where she worked for 30 years and received many awards. All along, she was also a most active member of a number of Slovenian and religious organizations, including KSKJ, the Educational and dramatic Club of Slovenia, Croatian and Slovenian United Foundation, the Joint Parish Council of the Church of the Nativity, and was always a generous participant at their social and fundraising functions.
Stanka was sincerely devout and lived her faith. She regularly attended the Church of the Nativity even though she did not live nearby. After Archbishop Quinn closed the church in 1995, she passionately participated in the parishioners’ efforts to reopen the church, and after one-and-a-half years, they succeeded. A doer, she took pragmatic steps as well as prayed many a rosary in front of the closed church for this to happen. She wholeheartedly supported the community to keep the church viable and
never spared energy, time, or > resources for anything she ^ undertook. She could always 2 be counted on for any event in the community, including reception of clergy and guests from Slovenia, whom she frequently hosted in her homes in San Francisco and Sonoma.
One of her great joys was cooking. She was among the best cooks among us. Her friends will not forget how well and often they were treated in her home, and the countless delicacies she prepared for community activities. Another love was her garden. In front of her home in Sonoma always bloomed the most beautiful roses. But her greatest love was her family. In the year 2000, she was crushed by the sudden death of her husband and became even more devoted to her family. The source of her unbounded joy were the marriages of her sons and the gift of grandchildren.
On Thursday, May 24, in the Church of the Nativity, which she so faithfully supported, we paid a farewell tribute to Stanka with a beautiful Mass concelebrated by family friend Fr. Peter Lah and the local pastor Fr. Julian. The parish choir, of which she was a long-time member, sang the songs she loved.
On the same day in Slovenia, a memorial Mass was celebrated for her in “Ljubljanska stolnica” and in her home parish church as well.

First Music Scholarship for Slovenian-American students
Annual Polka Dance and Sausage Festival
Singing is key to the continuation of Slovenian music in America. Now Slovenian students of voice can apply for a special scholarship to pursue their musical calling. The Cleveland Institute of Music is accepting applications for the Josephine Valencie Scholarship in Voice.
The Valencie scholarship covers a portion of the cost of tuition for a Cleveland Institute of Music student who is of Slovenian heritage and/or a member of a chartered Slovenian-American organization. Applicants must be enrolled in the Preparatory voice program for at least one year. The scholarship is awarded for a full year and distributed over two semesters.

Louie and Rose
are Married
Louie and Rose were married on January 30, 1911 at St. Vitus Church with the ceremony in Slovenian. Rose and her family had belonged to St. Peter’s Church where the language was German. At their 50th anniversary party, in 1961, Rose admitted that when they were married she didn’t understand the words because they were in Slovenian, but she knew she was married. Another sidelight of things in those days was there were many immigrants who were marrying and it was common to hold several weddings simultaneously. When Louis and Rose were married, there were three or four other couples who were married at the same Mass.
Louie the Inveterate Farmer
Still having a yearning for the farm life he left behind in Europe, Louie looked forward to the day he could quit working in the foundry and have his own little farm. The first year of marriage brought Louie and Rose’s first daughter, Rose, called Rosie. Soon after Louie got his wish for a small farm. He and Rose rented a farm in Hinckley, Ohio where their second daughter, Frances, was born the following year. It was an unusual experience for Rose who was only 19-years-old. Working the farm day and night caused Louie to be totally exhausted when the baby was to arrive and he fell asleep in a chair while Rose delivered Frances by herself.
Once in a while Louie Would hitch up the horse and Wagon and take the family into the city to visit with family and friends, and pick UP a few things they needed but couldn’t get from the general store in Hinckley. Hinckley was a number of ■niles south of Cleveland, far removed from any big city. There was a feed and seed / blacksmith shop at the corner °f Pearl and Broadview Roads in what was then called Brooklyn, a southern suburb of Cleveland. It was aPproximately half way between Hinckley and Cleve-bind. This became the regu-'ur stop for travelers to Cleveland where they could filter their horses and themselves for that matter. During °ue trip to Cleveland Louie Picked up a hitchhiker and told him he could sit at the ack of the wagon. The itchhiker started moving toWard the front of the

wagon and Louie told him he had to stay at the back because he was concerned about his family. The next time the hitchhiker started advancing to the front of the wagon Louie stopped and told him to get off, which he reluctantly did. After returning home, Louie found that his pistol was missing and realized that the hitchhiker was up to no good and actually got away with some of the goods.
Louie and Rose had the farm for a little more than a year and things did not go well. Louie took all of his savings and borrowed from the bank to buy a horse, a plow and other farm working tools and necessities. He had to do most of the work by himself because Rose had a small baby and was expecting another one. Not only that but she was a city girl and didn’t know anything about farming. Louie had to wear hip boots because of all the snakes that jumped at him as he plowed the fields. Remember, plowing was done using a horse and hand held plow, with the fanner walking behind the plow, guiding it.
He had a difficult time negotiating with the general store to buy feed and other things because of his poor command of the English language, but he managed to get through.Unfortunately, when harvest time came, the land hadn’t produced enough for Louie to pay his debts and he was forced to declare bankruptcy, an embarrassment he kept secret until his old age when he told his only son, Lou, about it. He said he never told anyone else.
The farm in Hinckley was not a good experience but it was the opportunity Louie had strived for and it left him satisfied to go back to work in the foundry, which he did for the rest of his working life.
So after losing everything in his farming venture, Louie swallowed his pride and went back to work at Chisholm & Moore. He was a
skilled molder and the economy was going well which meant they were glad to have him back. There was no such thing as seniority or benefits at that time in American history so it wasn’t a case of reinstating him with the company. It was just a case of talking to the boss and going to work.
Settling back in Cleveland may have been awkward but it had to be done. One other sideline about the Hinckley farm was that at that time the locals were building a dam to flood a small river and create a lake. They collected anything and everything they could and they asked Louie for gravel from his farm. He agreed to give it to them and that gravel is part of the Hinckley Lake dam that still stands to this day.
Upon returning to “the city” Louie and Rose and their two girls, Rosie and Frances, moved in with Rose’s parents, or at least in the same building. From then on they pretty much lived together in the same house or building. It was important for families to help each other since there were no other social programs to do that, except that which were provided by the church, and Louie and Rose became active parishioners of St. Vitus church, working in their fundraisers and donating what little they could afford.
Social Life
Louie had become active in a men’s club (lodge) called the St. Aloysius Society. It was a social group that helped each other when necessary and was active in local community affairs. The members wore elaborate uniforms and marched in parades. Boots and swords were all part of the regalia. Louie had all these necessities before he was married but his participation waned when he had a family to raise. That organization disbanded in the 1930s, but the sword still resides with the family.
The Catholic Order of Foresters, an insurance group in Chicago, established lodges (called courts) in Cleveland and in 1908 Baraga Court (an all men’s lodge) was created at St. Vitus parish. Besides providing insurance to its members, it was an active organization, holding dances and other fund-raising activities for St. Vitus parish, as well as for the social enjoyment of its members and their families. In June of 1910 Louie was invited to join this group and he became an active member for the rest of his life. In the 50 year anniversary booklet of Baraga Court it was stated
that Louie served in one office or another for more consecutive years than any other member.
Another activity that both Louie and Rose were involved with was the SDZ, one of the insurance companies that was born in the late 19lh and early 20th century. Immigrants were poor and when a death occurred it was necessary for people to help pay the funeral expenses. If a man died his wife carried on supporting the family but she had no money to bury him. Gradually insurance companies evolved that created social activity as well as a small amount of money for burial. The SDZ (Slovenska Dobrodelna Zveza) was established in Cleveland in 1910. It had several lodges with each lodge having an assigned number and a chosen name. Louie belonged to Lodge Number 9, Workers Union (which changed its name to the Cleveland Lodge in later years) that was for men only, and Rose belonged to Lodge Number 4, St. Anne’s Lodge, that was for women only. As the ethnicity of the group diminished, the name was changed from SDZ to American Mutual Life Association, or AMLA.
These lodges sponsored many social activities that added enjoyment to people’s lives. Louie and Rose also enrolled their children in these lodges for the insurance benefit, and like father, Lou possesses a 50-year pin from the AMLA as well as from the Catholic Order of
Erste
Foresters.
As times improved during the “teens” of the 20lh century, these were good times. One of the enjoyments that Louie and Rose talked about was going to see Charlie Chaplin movies. Movies were just developing into an industry but they had no sound unless someone provided a musical background like playing a piano. Movie theaters as we know them today did not yet exist and movies were shown in an empty lot with wooden benches to sit on. The price of admission was 5 cents and Charlie Chaplin movies were a hit because they were humorous, relevant and full of comic action, which was so important since there was no sound.
During this time in 1912, St. Vitus built a new school. Until that time both the church and the school were small wooden structures that the Slovenians of St. Clair Avenue had outgrown, mainly because of the influx of immigrants. The new school, made of brick, had three floors and the dramatic population growth required the use of all three floors of schoolrooms plus the use of some classrooms in the old school. Lou remembers the old school where it stood and where it was eventually demolished, but he never went to classes there. The old school may have started out as a large home that was converted into a school It was finally torn down around 1948.

Slovenia’s Flavorful Wine Routes

There are 20 wine routes in Slovenia - some fully recognized, while others are still trying to find the key to success. The names of most of them reveal which winegrowing district they arc situated in, or designate the wine-growing regions where the numerous tastes of fine Slovenian wines can be discovered.
The common features of all wine routes are genuine wines along with local culinary specialties and their cultural and historic backgrounds. The wine routes are true pilgrimage destinations of picturesque Slovenia.
The Dreamy East and Its Aromatic White Wines
Let us embark on a journey, starting in the extreme east of Slovenia, and moving westward from the Lendava Wine Route, which has a lot in common with two nearby routes, the Prekmurje and Goričko Wine Routes: all of them arc in the Prekmurje wine producing district.
Their common characteristics are wines made from white grape varieties, mainly Italian Riesling, followed by Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Rhine Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir, Blue Franconian, Zweigelt, and even Cabernet Sauvignon. Each wine cellar also offers one or mo: c types of blended wines, i.c., wines which arc a blend of different varieties, which are known internationally as su-vee.
All three wine routes also boast characteristic culinary delights:	the ubiquitous
Prekmurje ham, the indispensable bograč goulash, dishes made with buckwheat and millet porridge, dodoli (white potato žganci), and of course, the Prekmurje koline with a wide variety of sausages (black and white pudding) and bujta repa (pork stew with sour turnip). As for the sweet dishes, the Prekmurje gibanica reigns supreme.
Whoever wanders into the heart of these three wine routes will also observe the rich cultural heritage from the Holy Trinity Church overlooking Lendava, with the mummy of Mihael Hadik, to architect Plečnik’s church at Bogojina; from the Romanesque / Gothic church at Martijanci and the Romanesque rotunda at Sela on Goričko hills, to the mighty castle overlooking the village of Grad.
East of Slovenia is crisscrossed with wine routes. The wine-growing districts of Srednje Slovenske Gorice, Radgona-Kapela, Ljutomer-Ormož and Haloze represent the Haloze, Ptuj, Ormož, Jeruzalem and Kapela Wine Routes which are home to the more eminent vineyards of Syrian white wines. Recently, red varieties were introduced, namely Pinot Noir and blue Franconian.
The owners of picturesque vineyard cottages and wine cellars will gladly offer their fresh, fruity varieties, some of which are also aromatic.
This is the country of the famous Šipon, whose claim to fame is its exceptional quality, especially the good vintages. As a young and entirely dry wine, it is an
ideal complement to the many regional culinary delights, and it is an excellent grape variety for the production of QmP wines, i.e., the late harvest wines, wines from hand selected grapes, wines from vine-dried grapes, and ice wines, and also as a base for sparkling wines.
The bouquet of the local Italian Riesling wines is reminiscent of apples or the scent of the lemon-tree, while mature Italian Rieslings can be truly outstanding, with a higher dry matter and alcohol content.
But the true king is the Rhine Riesling, which in the good vintages is becoming what it used to be: a wine of character, harmony and exceptional structure. The region also produces fine Chardonnay wines, and good vintages provide dry, as well as sweet QmP wines, which arc well suited for a long aging process in the bottle.
Old Culture and Merry People
It is little wonder that a visitor to these wine routes will come across many old wineries and cellars. The local people are friendly and merry. From the Assumption Day onwards, the vineyard hills echo with the distinctive sound of the klopotec wind-rattles.
The Ptuj wine cellar is the oldest of its kind in Slovenia. Its origins are traced back to the Middle Ages, when it was part of the monastery of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual. Its vaults store the oldest existing wine to be produced in Slovenia, dating from 1917. A few vintages from the four years of the Second World War and preceding it are missing, while the subsequent vintages are all present in the archives. A visit to the cellar is a memorable experience. The slide-show presentation and wine tasting leave a lasting impression.
The picturesque town of Ptuj is a treasury of Slovenian cultural heritage in its own right: it is the crowning feature of the Ptuj wine route. The visitors to the castle towering above the town arc in for a treat. They can admire the important cultural and historical collection, but also discover archaeological excavations from the distant past, notably from the Classical antiquity. A stroll
through the streets of the old town reveals many treasures, such as frescoes and the rich decorations of the town’s churches and other architectural monuments. A trip along the winding roads of the Haloze wine route offers fine sights of wine-growing slopes.
The town of Ormož is yet another treasure trove of natural and cultural heritage. Ormož castle is one of the landmarks of this rich cultural heritage. Visitors to the Jeruzalem-Ormož cellar can enjoy the inspiring majesty of the excellent wines found maturing in the cellar and originating from the famous vineyards at Malek. A beautiful winery at Malek offers a display of vine-growing and wine-making traditions and they also offer wine tasting.
Next to Malek, amidst the Kupljen vineyards, lies the Taverna Inn offering hearty home fare. And just before the lower-lying village of Svetinje lies the large Kupljen wine cellar featuring a wine academy and a wine bank.
The journey then continues toward Jeruzalem, with its beautiful small church and a gigantic wine cellar, leading past Železne dveri on to Ljutomer. The people of the Priekja region know how to treat their guests with good wine and interesting dishes.
If you have never heard of ajdovi krapei, Prlekija is the place where you can taste this sweet or savory buckwheat dish.
The towns and villages along these wine routes are also known for certain handcrafts, especially pottery.
First Sparkling Wine and the Oldest Vine At Gornja Radgona, the town’s celebrated wine cellar bids welcome. In 1852, the first sparkling wine of Slovenia was produced in this very institution. It has also won much praise for its distinguished Tramincr and Ranina wines. The latter variety is linked with a 19lh century owner of the cellar, Bouvicr.
Another very well known and loved product of the Radgona cellar is the blended	wine	named
Janževec. At	Gornja
Radgona there is an annual International Food and Agriculture Fair, which includes a Wine Competition. We
could say this wine route hosts the state championship in the tasting of Slovenian wines.
At Janžev vrh, visitors can see one of the largest wooden wine presses in Slovenia. Not far off is a place called Kapela, with a very well known wine cellar in which excellent Tramincr wines arc matured.
The Podravje wine region also includes wine routes around Maribor, beneath the Pohorje Mountains, and towards the Austrian border:

The east quarter of Maribor is home to the world’s oldest vine. The plant is over 400 years old and is a favorite site for celebrations accompanying vine pruning and grape harvesting. The vine descendants have been planted around the world, including in several royal households, the Vatican and, since last spring, in front of the French National Museum of Viticulture in Paris.
In the center of Maribor, there is an immense wine cellar, one of Europe’s largest. The corridors arc almost three kilometers long. The vineyards at Piramida, Kalvarija, Melje, Celestina, and Sempetcrska gorca are part of the picturesque Maribor I wine route.
On the left bank of the River Drava, excellent vineyards can be found at Kamnica and Brcstcrnica. The route is home to choice wines made of Italian Riesling, Gruncr, Silvancr, Rics-vaner, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Rhine Riesling, Kcr-ner, Tramincr, and Muscatel.
Red wines include the Pinot Noir, Blue Franconian, and Zweigelt, which arc the most widely produced varieties.
The town of Slovenska Bistrica is proud of Klet Bistrica, its fine wine cellar, and its eminent wines, the best known being a blend named Ritoznojčan. Close to Slovenske Konjice, the wonderful Škalce is a welcoming site, beneath which there is a golf course, situated literally amidst the vineyards.
The master glassblowers at Rogaška manufacture top-quality wineglasses and wine carafes, while the winemakers produce excellent wines, which can be tasted, among other places, in the Rogatec Wine Shop in the beautifully restored Strmol Castle.
Now, let us travel towards the south, into the winegrowing region of Posavje.
The region is divided into three wine routes: Bizeljsko, Dolenjska, and Bela Krajina - each is precious in its own right.

Slovenian 78 Records Wanted
It has been a few months since a reminder appeared in the American Home about the effort by Rich Terselic and Chuck Debevec to gain access to old 78 rpm phonograph records containing Slovenian polkas, waltzes and choral singing. It is our goal to preserve the “oldies” by converting them to compact disc (CD) format. Each reminder produces one or more new inquiries.
Using modern computer technology, Chuck is able to
produce excellent reproductions from even scratched or cracked discs. If you have no further interest in keeping your 78s, we will provide them a good home, or after converting them to CD format, will return them, along with a CD containing the selections from the 78s.

Our August meeting was quite well attended. It was a bittersweet time, with everyone still shaken by our president, John Kozlevchar’s, sudden death.
Before the meeting, we were supposed to see Lou Jerkic’s video of our various HAP doings. John K. had planned to project it on a big screen, but it was not to be. Lou did show the video on a small-screen TV, to honor John’s wishes, but it was hard to see and hear. Perhaps we can find an expert with a projector and large screen, to show it at a later date.
In our moments of silence we remembered our dear departed John Kozlevchar, also Beverly Hilton, Diana Jansen, sister of Ruth Ko-rclec, Don Mackay, Jerry Pike, Victoria Šuštaršič, and Rose Vcrhotz. May they rest in God’s loving hands forever. Our deepest sympathy to the saddened families.
Ann Eichler sent little rays of sunshine to ailing members Val Cekada, Frank Kalamasz, Ann Orilowski, Grace Schnick, Vicki Skarbez, and Mary Stragisher. Best wishes for your health, dear members. Glad to see several back in circulation. Vicki Skarbez was all set to work at our July picnic, but wound up in the hospital instead. So glad you are better, Vicki.
The picnic went very well, by the way, despite the morning rain. It’s getting to be if you need rain, just schedule the HAP picnic, and you’re bound to get wet.
Many, many thanks to all the hardworking members who made success possible. Afraid if I start naming individual names, I’ll miss someone, so this is a BIG group applause.

St. Vitus Slovenian School Students Visit Slovenia
This summer a group of St. Vitus Slovenian School children had an opportunity to visit some of the beautiful sites in Slovenia. St. Vitus Slovenian school sponsors the trips to Slovenia every couple of years, inviting the 7,h and 8Ih graders to experience first hand all the history and culture they have been learning in school. The trip was led by Mojca Slak with the help of Maruška Coffelt, Mary Ann Vogel, and Craig Hebebrand.

Stuffed Mushrooms Parmigiana
12 large fresh mushrooms (24 oz.)
2 This, butter or margarine
1	medium onion, finely chopped
2	oz. pepperoni, diced (1/2 cup)
'/» cup finely chopped green pepper
1 small clove garlic, minced
Vi cup finely crushed rich round crackers (12)
3	This, grated Parmesan cheese 1 This, snipped parsley
Vi tsp. seasoned salt
'A tsp. dried oregano, crushed
dash of pepper
1/3 cup chicken broth
Wash the mushrooms. Remove stems; finely chop stems and reserve. Drain caps on paper towels.
Melt butter or margarine in skillet; add onion, pepperoni, green pepper, garlic, and chopped mushroom stems. Cook until vegetables are tender but not brown. Add cracker crumbs, cheese, parsley, seasoned salt, oregano, and pepper; mix well. Stir in chicken broth. Spoon stuffing into mushroom caps, rounding tops.
Place caps in shallow baking pan with about !4 inch of Water covering bottom of pan. Bake, uncovered, in 325 degree oven about 25 minutes or until heated through. Makes 12 stuffed mushrooms.

1 Tbsp. oil
4 boneless chicken breast halves (approx. 1 lb)
1	can (10 2/4 oz.) condensed cream of chicken soup I'/z cups of water
2	cups of uncooked instant white rice (such as Minute Rice)
2 cups fresh broccoli tlorets
Heat oil in large non-stick skillet on medium-high hcat. Add chicken; cook four minutes or until cooked through. Remove chicken from skillet.
Add soup and water to skillet. Bring to boil.
Stir in rice and broccoli. Top with chicken; cover. C°ok on low heat for 5 minutes.

A pair of German physicists claim to have broken the speed of light - an achievement that would undermine our entire understanding of space and time.
According to Einstein’s special theory of relativity, it would require an infinite amount of energy to propel an object at more than
186,000	miles per second.
However, Dr. Gunter Nimtz and Dr. Alfons Stahi-hofen, of the University of Koblenz, say they may have breached a key tenant of that theory.
The pair say they have conducted an experiment in which microwave photons -energetic packets of light -traveled “instantaneously’ between a pair of prisms that

Being able to travel faster than the speed of light would lead to a wide variety of bizarre consequences. For instance, an astronaut moving faster than it would theoretically arrive at a destination before leaving.

What is Origin of ‘Computer’
Computer, a name for a person who computes goes back to the mid-17lh century,. The word was not applied to the machine we call the computer until 1944, when it was so used in a London Times story.

using 18,000 radio tubes, was built in 1946 by three scientists at the University of Pennsylvania—Dr. John W. Manchly, J. Presper Eckert, Jr., and J. G. Brainerd. Their ENIAC - Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer - cost $400,000 and had to be housed in a 30-foot by 50-foot room.
Book ‘Slovenia 1945’ Available
Probably you have heard about a very interesting book written by John Corsellis. The title is Slovenia 1945. In it he describes the time at the end of the Second World War when thousands of refugees from Slovenia and other parts of Yugoslavia fled the communist terror to Austria and Italy.
The returning Domobranci under the pretext of being sent to Italy from Austria, instead they were sent back to Tito’s army which massacred them. Live witnesses describe this horrendous acts of merciless hatred, vengeance and murder.
How the British occupying forces in Austria tried to force the rest of the refugees to return back to Slovenia. It tells of the hardship they suffered in DP camps and how they survived all that. And finally how they established themselves in the countries to which they emigrated.
It is a book well written and easy to read and makes an excellent gift. The first shipment was sold out in four weeks. I did receive the second shipment, so if you want a book, please hurry as they are going fast.

Cook time: 12-15 minutes Ingredients:
1	package of refrigerated readv-madc pizza dough
Filling:
2	Granny Smith apples, peeled, coarsely chopped
4 tablespoons (2 ounces) butter
‘/4 lemon, juiced
2 tablespoons raisins
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons slivered almonds
1 cup (8 ounces) Sharp Cheddar cheese, grated, '4 cup will be used in the piz/.a filling and Vi cup will be sprinkled on top of the pizza
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
Saute two coarsely chopped Granny Smith apples in butter until softened. Add lemon juice, raisins and sugar.

Slovenija se v letu 2006 približala ravni držav EU v gospodarskem oziru
Statistični urad Evropske zveze - Eurostat - je pred nedavnim objavil podatke, ki kažejo, da je v letu 2006 slovenski bruto domači proizvod na prebivalca dosegel 87% povprečja vseh 27 držav-članic te skupnosti. Na lestvici vseh držav-članic je Slovenija tako zasedla 16. mesto, neposredno pred njo sta Grčija (89%) in otoška država Ciper (94%). Daleč prednjači majhna državica Luksemburg s 280% nad povprečjem, sledita ji Irska (ki je v zadnjih letih doživela izreden vzpon) s 144% in Nizozemska z 131%. Na dnu lestvice sta dve najnovejši državi-članici EU, se pravi Bolgarija (37%) in Romunija (38%).
S 1. januarjem 2008 bodo padle mejne
kontrole med Slovenijo in Avstrijo ter med Slovenijo in Italijo
Z začetkom leta 2008 bo Slovenija za šest mesecev postala predsednica Evropske unije. Istočasno, s 1. januarjem 2008, pa bo Slovenija tudi postala članica tako imenovanega Schengenskega sporazuma. To pomeni, da bodo odpadle mejne kontrole med Slovenijo in Avstrijo ter Italijo. Sporazum urresničuje enega ustanovnih ciljev EU že iz Rimske pogodbe 1.	1957, da bi se
odstranile meje med državami članicami.
Prvi sporazum za to je bil podpisan že leta 1985, drugi, sedaj veljavni, pa 19. junija 1990 v majhnem kraju Schengen v Luksemburgu, v veljavo za nekatere države čla-
nice pa je prišel šele leta 1995. Slovenija je pristopila k Evropski uniji L maja 2004 in je s tem prevzela tudi bistvene dele Schengenskega sporazuma. Polnopravno vključitev oz. odstranjevanje mejnih kontrol bo predvidoma pričela s L januarjem 2008. Splošno mnenje je, da bo ta korak zbližal Slovenijo z Avstrijo in Italijo in tudi, da bo koristno za slovenski manjšini v obeh državah. Posebej na Koroškem se zadnje mesece intenzivno pripravljajo glede izkoriščanja novih možnosti gospodarskega in tudi drugačnega sodelovanja. Gre v bistvu za še en korak v združevanju večine evropskih držav znotraj EU.
Letališče Jože Pučnik (Brnik) med najsodobnejšimi v Evropi
V zadnjem času so na letališču Jože Pučnik, se pravi na Brniku, odprli nov terminal za potnike, ki spada med najsodobnejše v Evropi, poleg tega je povsem pravilno opremljen, da izpolnjuje zahteve novega schengenskega režima znotraj EU. Kot kaže, bo ta režimi na letališču prišel v veljavo marca 2008. Terminal in druge izboljšave so stale več kot 20 milijonov dolarjev, čakalni prostor odprt potnikom je bil povečan od 800 kv metrov na kar 5000, ko bodo vsa dela končana, bo imel terminal kapaciteto za 850 potnikov na uro oziroma dvakrat več, kot zmore zdaj. Računajo, da bodo z novimi zmogljivostmi lahko imeli do 2,5 milijona potnikov na leto. Predviden konec gradbenih del je v letu 2010.
RUSKA KAPELICA SIMBOL PRIJATELJSTVA - Ruska kapelica pod Vršičem je 29. junija zopet postala tak simbol prijateljskih odnosov med Rusijo in Slovenijo. Bila je tudi 91. obletnica postavitve kapele in tragedije leta 1916, ki je terjala življenja okolil 300 ruskih vojnih ujetnikov, cesto na Vršič pa je gradilo okoli 12.000 ruskih vojnih ujetnikov. Slovesnosti 29. junija sta se udeležili močni slovenski in ruski delegaciji. Slovensko je vodil premier Janez Janša, rusko pa podpredsednica ruskega duma oz. Parlamenta Ljubov Slirsky. Nagovor je imel slovenski zunanji minister Dimitrij Rupel, ki je dejal, da bi se v rusko-slovenskih odnosih želeli predvsem ohraniti kulturno bližino, ki je bila od nekdaj značilna za literarne tokove, in pospešiti gospodarsko sodelovanje. Ljubov Sliska pa je dejala, da “ko pregledamo na preteklo desetletje in pol, lahko z zadovoljstvom ugotovimo, da je naše sodelovanje napredovalo z zavidanja vredno dinamiko.” Dodala, ga gleda Rusija na bližajočo slovensko predsedovanje EU pozitivno, in b<> pripomoglo h krepitvi odnosov med Rusijo in EU in še tudi h krepitvi pozicij slo-vanskili narodov v Evropi.

Umrla je 87 let stara Anna Zdešar, rojena Zul-kowski, vdova po Franku, mati Franka ml. in Therese Harsh, 4-krat stara mati, 3-krat prastara mati, sestra že pok. Anthonyja. Pogreb je bil 23. avgusta v oskrbi Želetovega zavoda, kjer so tudi bili pogrebni obredi, s pokopom na pokopaliišču Vernih duš.

CLEVELAND, O. - Pred dvema tednoma je skupina mladih, predvsem faranov Sv. Vida in Marije Vnebov-zete, organizirala in vodila zelo prijeten piknik in zabavno prireditev na Slovenski pristavi. Starost mladih v tej skupini je 17-25 let. Mnogi med njimi so obiskovali Slovensko šolo, sodelovali pri delu svojih župnij in so člani različnih slovenskih društev v Clevelandu. Vsem pa je skupna mladostna energija in želja prispevati svoj delež k življenju in kulturi ameriški slovenske skupnosti.
Njihova želja, biti priznani kot “skupina mladih", je zelo naravna in primerna in zasluži podporo skupnosti. Želje skupine ni izpodriniti kako drugo mladinsko organizacijo, pač pa omogočiti različne interese mladih, kot na primer več družabnega in športnega udejstvovanja na Pristavi, povečanje in pospeševanje kulturne dejavnosti in, kar je zelo važno, preprosto nuditi varno in prijateljsko okolje, kjer se lahko mladina zbira, sklepa prijateljstvo in ima pošteno zabavo.
"Skupina mladih" se želi zahvaliti vsem podpornikom in onim. ki so prišli na njihov piknik pred dvema tednoma. Slovenska skupnost pa jim pravi: “Dobro opravljeno delo! Vaša zamisel je odlična in vas prosimo, ohraniti svoje navdušenje!”

PERRY. O. - Pri založbi Annales v Kopru je izšla 475 strani obsegajoča knjiga z naslovom - Operacija Julijska Krajina: Severovzhodna meja Italije in zavezniške obveščevalne službe. 1943-1945.
Gre za resno, izčrpno doktorsko disertacijo mladega zgodovinarja iz slovenske Primorske, ki obravnava usodne dogodke na enem najbolj kritičnih področjih medvojne Evrope, nič ne fantazira, ničesar ne prepušča špekulacijam bralca: vse je dokumentirano in s tem dokončno potrjeno.
Morda je prav v tem edina šibka stran tega dela. Disertacija bo zanimala predvsem ljudi s Primorske in še med temi predvsem ljudi, ki so bili kakorkoli blizu vsemu temu dogajanju. Takih ljudi pa je danes, žal. že zelo malo.
Drug omembe vreden element je v dejstvu, da se Bajčeve raziskave, po svoji nujnosti in bitnosti, v veliki meri nanašajo na dogajanja na italijanski strani te “severovzhodne meje”. Ugotovitve in navedbe dokumentov, ki

jih je Bajc odkril in jih navaja, se dotikajo samega živca slovenske občutljivosti in to še in še. V nekem smislu se dodajajo trpkosti, ki nam je vsem obstala v grlih, ko se je svetovni vihar slednjič izdivjal in so izmučene vasi zaspale v pravem miru.
Če je namreč mogoče potegniti kako rdečo nit iz Bajčevega raziskovanja, je ta v spoznanju, da je perfidni Albion, ki je leta 1915 za ceno sodelovanja Italije v prvi svetovni vojni na zavezniški strani, prodal zemljo, ki je ni imel nobene pravice prodajati - je med drugo vojno skušal to prodajo ne le potrditi, temveč nekako zavarovati ali vsaj rešiti čimveč bi se je dalo, kaj šele, da bi jo obžaloval.
Bajčeva knjiga je težko branje, bo pa po svoji izčrpnosti dobro služila vsem, ki se bodo v prihodnje zanimali za zgodovino in usodo malega naroda tam med Alpami, naroda, ki noč umreti in zahteva — Benjamin svoje mesto v evropski skupnosti.
BUENOS AIRES, Arg. - V četrtek. 23. avgusta 2007 je v Buenos Airesu, Argentina, Bog poklical k sebi dr. Jožeta Ranta, isti dan je ležal na mrtvaškem odru na svojem domu, kamor so ga prišli kropit številni rojaki.
Njegov brat. salezijanski duhovnik Tone Rant je ob asistenci patra dr. Alojzija Kukoviče SJ za pokojnika daroval pogrebno mašo. Brat Tone se je z ganljivimi besedami poslovil od svojega zadnjega brata.
Ta usoda begunskih družin se vedno znova ponavlja. V begunstvo je maja 1945 iz Kranja odšla šestčlanska Rantova družina: oče Janko, mati Marija roj. Gogala in sinovi Pavle, Peter, Jože in Tone.
Na tej dolgi begunski poti. ki se žal za večino izteka v tujini, so drug za drugim legali k večnemu počitku v argentinsko zemljo.
Kdo bo mogel kdaj popisati boleče slovo od pokojnih na tujih tleh? Ko
bi ne imeli vere v večno življenje, bi nas ta poslavljanja strla.
Tudi pater dr. Kukoviča se je od pokojnika poslovil in se mu zahvalil za lep zgled prenašanja trpljenja in vdanosti v božjo voljo. Kljub hudim krizam je pokojnik ostal globoko veren in je pri polni zavesti prejel zakrament za umirajoče in papežev blagoslov.
Kot sošolec in prijatelj se je od Jožeta poslovil Marjan Loboda. Pokojnika se je spomnil še iz Kranja, potem sta bila skupaj v taboriščih Peggetz in Spittal, pri skavtih, pri Marijini kongregaciji in nazadnje v Argentini. Zahvalil se mu je za zvesto prijateljstvo in mu želel večni pokoj, domačim pa tolažbo vere.

Jože Rant je bil rojen v Kranju 16. februarja 1931, kjer je obiskoval osnovno šolo. med vojsko pa nemško gimnazijo, izpite pa je moral polagati v Celovcu. Maja 1945 se
je pred prihajajočimi komunisti Rantova družina umaknila na Koroško.
V taborišču Peggetz in potem Spittal je obiskoval begunsko gimnazijo in se udejstvoval v Marijini kongregaciji in pri skavtih v I. Slovanskem Stegu, v 2. Zmajevi četi.
Leta 1948 so se Kantovi naselili v Argentini, kjer je Jože dokončal srednjo šolo medtem ko je bil zaposlen kot tovarniški delavec. Vstopil je v Slovensko begunsko semenišče v Adrogue pri Buenos Airesu in bil posvečen v duhovnika leta 1956.
Leta 1961 je promoviral za doktorja teologije na katoliški univerzi Del Salvador v Buenos Airesu. Mentor mu je bil p. Jose Aduriz S J, zagovarjal pa je tezo o argentinskem filozofu dr. Victorju Mas-suh-u - nanovo odkrito “Sveto”.
Razvil je intenzivno delovanje v argentinski Cerkvi. Predvsem je deloval kot profesor na katoliških srednjih šolah v škofijah Moron in San Justo v Velikem Buenos Airesu.
Bil je ustanovitelj in prvi rektor uglednega zavoda Juan XXIII. v Ramos Mejia in farne šole v. Haedo, obe v Velikem Buenos Airesu. Predaval je moralko na katehetskem semenišču v Moro-nu, za kar je spisal več priročnikov. Bil je svetovalec pri Pokrajinskem odboru katoliških šol, prosinodalni eksaminator, asistent združenja katoliških zdravnikov v škofiji Moron in asistent škofijske Katoliške akcije v isti škofiji.
Po devetih letih duhovništva je leta 1965 prvič zaprosil za redukcijo v laiški stan. drugič pa leta 1975. kar je končno dobil odobreno leta 1976.
Skozi dvajset let (od 1975 do 1995) je predaval kot docent za humanistične vede na Pokrajinskih fakultetah univerze Avellaneda in Buenos Aires, kjer je po natečaju 1. 1985 dosegel status rednega naslovnega profesorja.
Do upokojitve leta 1995 je bil tudi ravnatelj stolice v Avellanedi in ravnatelj humanističnega področja v Buenos Airesu. Za slušatelje je napisal nad 30 priročnikov, ki so izšli v založbi obeh fakultet. V istem času je bil zaposlen tudi na rektoratu Državne tehnološke univerze, kjer je tudi po
natečaju dosegel mesto ravnatelja za pouk.
Medtem je spisal več filozofskih razprav v španščini. Leta 1991 je na univerzi Del Salvador pod mentorstvom znanega u-čenjaka patra Ismaela Quilesa SJ dosegel že drugi doktorat, ko je promoviral za doktorja filozofije. Branil je tezo: Prispveki k lantinso-ame-riški antropologiji, začenši s tehniko.

Po skoro 25-letni odsotnosti od delovanja v slovenski skupnosti je leta 1987 na povabilo tedanjega urednika Meddo-bja Andreja Rota spet začel pisati v slovenščini. Poslej je bil med pogostimi sodelavci te revije. V njej je objavil nad 20 filozofskih razprav, več recenzij o novih knjigah, kakor tudi komentarjev k slovenski in svetovni aktualnosti.
Znani so bili njegovi dopisi v rubriko “Pisma bralcev” v buenosaireški Svobodni Sloveniji, kjer
je večkrat prodorno ocenil dogajanja med nami in v Sloveniji. V slovenski skupnosti v Argentini je z njegovim odhodom nastala nenadomestljiva vrzel.
Ker država ni hotela financirati raziskovanja o znanstvenem izrazoslovju, je odstopil kot predsednik Odbora za raziskavo o znanstvenem izrazoslovju in zaprosil za upokojitev.
Kot takratni predsednik društva Zedinjena Slovenija sem ga naprosil, da je sprejel delo za izdajo jubilejnega zbornika ob 50-letnici delovanja tega društva v Buenos Airesu. Ta monumentalna študija je izšla z mecenskimi darovi nekaterih rojakov v Argentini, Severni Ameriki in Urada za Slovence po svetu, na več kot 800 straneh pod naslovom "Zbornik dela v zvestobi in ljubezni 1948 - 1998’-
Z njemu lastno natančnostjo in temeljitostjo je zbral doslej najpopolnejšo

POMEMBNO: Letos poteka rok zahteve za popravo krivic. Vsak begunec, ki je preživel svoja begunska leta po taboriščih v Avstriji in Italiji, ima pravico do zahteve za popravo krivic za vsa begunska leta, dokler se ni odselil v državo stalne naselitve. Za to je treba potrdila o bivanju v taborišču ali pa priče, ki to lahko potrdijo. V pisarni vam lahko to obrazložimo.

podatkov in dokumentov o delu in življenju slovenske politične emigracije v Argentini. Škoda, da je ta knjiga še premalo poznana in je mnogi pisci o Slovencih v Argentini ne poznajo in ne upoštevajo.
S pomočjo neimenovanega mecena je leta 2003 izdal knjigo “Pavle Rant ~ To sem bil - Prispevki k zgodovini slovenske politične emigracije". Na 300 straneh je na podlagi ohranjene korespondence Pokojnega brata Pavleta z raznimi osebami, ki so opazno posegale v medvojno in povojno dogajanje v slovenski družbi na zanimiv način posvetil v io razburkano dobo.
V tem času se mu je iudi prvič pojavila v ustih rakasta tvorba. Prestal je več težkih in komplicira-oih operacijskih posegov, ^se trpljenje je sprejel z veliko vdanostjo v božjo voljo in ga nosil z neverjetnim optimizmom.
Pred prvo operacijo me Je poklical po telefonu in Povedal, da so ga zdrav-niki opozorili, da morda
po operaciji ne bo mogel več govoriti. “Kakor Bog hoče”, mi je dejal. Po operaciji se je z velikim trudom in vztrajno vajo naučil takorekoč na novo govoriti.
V trdni veri, da bo bolezen premagal, je sprejel moje povabilo, da bi na željo in z mecensko podporo prijatelja in sošolca Rudija Kolariča iz Clevelanda napisal knjigo, ki naj bi dala odgovor na vprašanja potomcev slovenskih beguncev raztresenih po vsem svetu: Zakaj ste šli v begunstvo?
Z njemu lastno zavzetostjo se je lotil pisanja in po skoro treh letih je ta mesec v Buenos Airesu izšla knjiga v slovenščini na 380 straneh z naslovom “Slovenski eksodus 1945".
S pomočjo svoje žene prof. Marije Roze Rapi-sarda je pripravil tudi že prevod v španščino, v ZDA pa je angleški prevod oskrbel gospod Jerry Zupan. Španska in angleška izdaja bosta predvidoma tiskani tudi v Buenos Airesu v prihod-

V zadnjih letih je bilo poslopje temeljito obnovljeno Slovesna otvoritev veleposlaništva bo v petek, 28. septembra.

njih treh mesecih. Tako bo knjiga dostopna tudi najmlajšim rodovom-po-tomcem slovenskih beguncev, katerih pogovorna jezika sta že španščina in angleščina, pa se še čutijo Slovence.
Jože je prebral desetine zgodovinskih knjig, si dopisoval z zgodovinarji v Sloveniji, šel tudi osebno v Slovenijo in zbral in preveril ogromno podatkov, ki jih vsebuje knjiga.
Čeprav sem vse delo od blizu spremljal, mi je še vedno uganka, kako je kljub svoji težki bolezni uspel dokončati to veliko delo. Nedoumljiva tragedija se mi zdi, da je prav na dan ko je Jože umrl v buenosaireški bolnišnici, v slovenski tiskarni Baraga v Slovenski vasi v Buenos Airesu bilo končanih prvih 10 izvodov njegove knjige, ki je pa on že ni mogel videti. ker je bil že nekaj dni prej v nezavesti. Ena tragedija več v njegovem tako razburkanem in težkem življenju.
Naj mu bo dobrotljivi Bog bogat plačnik za vse njegovo delo. Stvarnik ga je obdaril z velikimi da-
rovi, kot dober oskrbnik žbi v korist. Naj počiva

Od južne železnice do petega koridorja...
150 let železniške proge Dunaj-Ljubljana-Trst
Trst - Danes je nadvse aktualno razpravljanje o hitri železniški povezavi od Portugalske do U-krajine, ki naj bi tekla tudi po slovenskih krajih čez Kras ali bolje pod Krasom od Ronk do Divače, kakor se je pred 150 leti navdušeno pričakovala dograditev “železne ceste” od Dunaja prek Gradca, Maribora, Celja, Ljubljane, Postojne, Sežane in Nabrežine do Trsta.
Z zgraditvijo te 577 km dvotirne železnice se je avstro-ogrsko cesarstvo uvrstilo med najbolj razvite evropske države na prometnem področju.
Omenjena proga je med drugim povezala cesarsko prestolnico z Jadranskim morjem oziroma s tržaškim pristaniščem, katerega razvoj je, kot vemo, povezan z razsvetljeno politiko cesarjev Karla VI. in Marije Terezije.
Prvo železniško progo so zgradili v Angliji leta 1825. v Avstriji že dobrih deset let zatem, t.j. 1836. Nato je bilo zgrajenih nekaj železniških odsekov severno od Donave.

Dunajski bankir baron de Sina je od cesarja izposloval koncesije za gradnjo železnic južno od Donave. Območje južno od Dunaja je prišlo na vrsto nazadnje zaradi visokega pogorja Semmeringa. Tudi tržaški trgovski krogi so se večkrat zavzeli železniško povezavo do Trsta.
Dunajski dvor je tako leta 1841 izdal odločbo o gradnji "Južne državne železnice" čez Semmering proti štajerskemu Gradcu. Za izbiro te smeri se je odločil inž. Carlo Ghega, doma iz Benetk, a uslužbenec avstrijskega dunajskega dvora.
Tako je do leta 1844 bil zgrajen delni odsek do Gradca, leta 1846 do Celja in leta 1849 do Ljubljane, kamor je prišel na odrtje sam cesar Franc Jožef.
Tu se je postavilo vprašanje, po kateri smeri naprej proti morju. Predlaganih je bilo več inačic. Ena od teh je predvidevala gradnjo proge iz Ljubljane proti Škofji Loki in nato po Poljanski dolini in po daljšem predoru po dolini Idrijce. Nadaljevala naj bi se vzdolž Idrijce in Soče proti Gorici. Tržiču in Trstu.
Prevladala je varianta speljave proge čez močvirnato ljubljansko kotlino in nato naprej čez Kras. Tudi v tem primeru je bilo odločilno stališče inž. Ghege, ki mu je bila poverjena gradnja Južne železnice že leta 1845. Kraška varianta je namreč predvidevala skrajšanje proge za 43 km v primerjavi z ono prek Škofje Loke, Idrije in Gorice, krajši čas gradnje za tri leta in znaten finančni prihranek za državno blagajno.
Dela so se začela spomladi leta 1850. Zračna razdalja med Ljublano in Trstom je sicer 65 km, železniška proga pa je dolga 144 km, ker je morala obiti razne naravne ovire kraškega sveta.
Proga je dosegla Opčine na nadmorski višini 303 metrov, do Trsta je bilo še 27 km. Načrtovalci pa so pred tem predvidevali, da bi proga začela zavijati proti Trstu
šele pri Devinu, da bi pa lahko izkoristili bogate vire pitne vode v Brojnici ob morju pod Nabrežino, so progo preusmerili proti Trstu že pri Nabrežini.
Iz omenjenih izvirov so nato začeli napajati vodovod za tržaško mesto prav ob odprtju proge, ko je takratna Poto-ška cesta, danes Cardu-ccijeva ulica, dobila javno razsvetljavo na plin.
Podatki govorijo, da je na progi med Postojno in Trstom delalo kakih 30 tisoč delavcev. Naj tu omenimo, da je bila že leta 1860 vzpostavljena železniška povezava od Nabrežine proti Tržiču. Gorici in naprej proti Vidmu.
Za končno postajo v Trstu so morali zasuti tudi nekaj morja ob izlivu Rojanskega potoka,. Tu je namreč potekala tudi glavna slovesnost ob odprtju proge dne 27. julilja 1857.
Točno ob 10.30 je vlak, ki ga je vlekla slavnostno okrašena lokomotiva Miramar, skozi predor pod Greto in po viaduktu nad Lazaretom sv.Terezije, privozil na postajo ob nepopisnem navdušenju vseh številnih predstavnikov oblasti in drugih meščanov.
Po pozdravu mestnega župana je škof Jernej Legat blagoslovil spominsko listino, ki jo je nato mladi 27-letni cesar Franc Jožef vzidal s simbolično
položitvijo zadnjega kamna nove postaje.
V neposredni bližini železniške postaje je v naslednjih letih zraslo novo pristanišče, ki ga danes poznamo kot Staro pristanišče. Leta 1878 pa je bila dokončana današnja železniška postaja.
Trst v veliki meri dolguje svoj nadaljnji gospodarski razcvet novi povezavi z zaledjem. Značilno je. da letos ni bilo v Trstu nobene posebne slo- -vesnosti ob 150-letnici prve železniške povezave z Dunajem, ampak je od- ] prtje fotografske razstave v Železničarskem muzeju pri Sv. Andreju.
Omenjene obletnice pa so se dostojno spomnile Slovenske železnice, ki so v ta namen organizirale vožnjo posebnega vlaka od Ljubljane s postankoma v Divači in Sežani.
Vendar se je slovesnost morala tu zaključiti, ker za nadaljevanje slavnostne vožnje do Trsta, Italijanske železnice niso imele denarja...
Še dobro, da se je danes ohranilo poimenovanje ulice po inž. Carlu Ghegi, očetu Južne železnice Dunaj-Trst.

Do leta 2025 Slovenija z najstarejšimi prebivalci
Ljubljana - Študija Svetovne banke je pokazala, .da bo imela Slovenija do leta 2025 eno najstarejših prebivalstev na svetu. Po ugotovitvah Svetovne banke namreč, bo to posledica nizke rodnosti in dolge življenjske dobe, ki bosta Vzhodno in Srednjo Evropo s Slovenijo na čelu uvrstili med regije z najstarejšim prebivalstvom na svetu.
Vlade bodo prisiljene tako vse več vlagati v socialno in zdravstveno varnost starejših, kar bo v kombinaciji z relativno krhkim postkomunističnim gospodarstvom pomembno vplivalo na (ne)uspeh njihovih nacionalnih ekonomij.

Anton Veselič
Rojen je bil 31. oktobra 1937 v Belčjem vrhu v Beli krajini. V Kanado je prišel 1958. leta, si tam ustvaril družino in se leta 1970 z njo preselili v Cleveland, kjer se je zaposlil pri Maple Hts. Catering.
Pogreb je bil 13. januarja 2007. Pogrebna sv. maša je bila v cerkvi Holy Angels, daroval jo je preč. g. škof Edward Pevec. Od tam je bil naš dragi prepeljan na pokopališč All Saints, kjer je bil položen k večnemu počitku. Pogreb je bil v oskrbi zavoda Ferfolia.
Iskreno smo hvaležni preč. g. škofu Edwardu Pevcu za vso prijaznost in duhovno oporo družini v težkih trenutkih ter za darovano pogrebno sv. mašo. Hvala tudi č. g. Dan Schlegel za vljudnost, molitev in pomoč, ko smo jo bili najbolj potrebni.
Naj ljubi Bog poplača vsem za tolažilne besede, lepe rože, darove za sv. maše, za prisostvovanje pri pogrebni maši in spremstvo pokojnega na njegovi zadnji poti. Najlepša hvala članom Belokranjskega kluba za venec in molitve v pogrebnem zavodu. Hvaležni smo diakonu g. Stephen Yates za lepe poslovilne besede in molitve ob krsti pokojnega.
Prisrčna hvala za lepo petje pri pogrebni sv. maši, posebno hvalo gre tudi JoDee za vso pomoč. Hvaležni smo Ediju Mejač in Radijski družini za objavo smrti in tudi Ameriški domovini za napisano osmrtnico. Iskrena hvala osebju Maple Hts. Catering za okusno pripravljeno kosilo po pogrebu. Prav lepa hvala tudi nosilcem krste.
Razposlali smo zahvalne kartice, če pa smo koga zgrešili, naj nam oprosti in naj s to javno zahvalo sprejme našo globoko hvaležnost.

STANE J. KRANJC
Na konstitutivni seji Sveta Vlade RS za Slovence po svetu v začetku meseca julija je bil za člana sveta izbran tudi Stane Kranjc, predstavnik slovenske skupnosti v Kanadi, ki je hkrati tudi najstarejši član tega sveta. Vsekakor je Stane Kranjc pravi človek za to, da zastopa Slovence v Kanadi, kajti za njim je že več kot 50 let dolga in bogata pot Slovenca, ki se je kmalu po prihodu v Kanado vključil v življenje slovenske skupnosti, ki ga je ves čas tudi usmerjal in vodil.
Rodil se je v kraju Nadanje selo v občini Pivka, kjer je tudi obiskoval prva štiri leta osnovne šole. To pa ni bila slovenska šola, ampak italijanska, in šele po končani drugi svetovni vojni je lahko nadaljeval šolanje na nižji gimnaziji v Postojni.
Nekaj časa je delal v turizmu in gostinstvu, a je že leta 1951, ko mu je bilo komaj 18 let, odšel v širni svet. Še istega leta se je znašel v zahodni Kanadi, od koder se je po dveh letih preselil v Toronto.
Tu se je zaposlil pri ameriški prehrambeni firmi General Mills in se hkrati vključil v angleško večerno šolo. Ob pomoči podjetja je počasi in vztrajno absolviral še dve šoli s področja poslovne administracije.
Pri podjetju je seveda začel kot navadni delavec in šele po 15 letih in končanem šolanju kot menedžer prevzel odgovornost za kanadski oddelek ameriške firme in kmalu zatem postal tudi njen direktor. To je ostal do konca svoje 40-letne kariere pri tem podjetju oziroma do upokojitve.
Žena Elsie je ameriška Slovenka tretje generacije, saj so njeni stari starši Prišli v Ameriko že okoli leta 1909. Imata tri otro-
ke, dve hčeri in sina, šest vnukov in dve vnukinji. Vsi živijo v bližini Toronta.
Kot rečeno, se je Stane Kranjc vključil v slovensko skupnost že kmalu po prihodu v Kanado oziroma točneje po preselitvi v Toronto. Oba z ženo sta se vključila in sta še vedno člana slovenske župnije Marije Pomagaj v Torontu.
Zelo aktivna sta bila zlasti pri slovenskih skavtih in skavtinjah. Stane je bil sedem let tudi tajnik cerkvenega odbora. Je tudi pobudnik in ustanovni član slovenskega letovišča, doma starostnikov Lipa v Torontu, slovenske gospodarske zbornice, vseslovenskega kulturnega odbora (bil je tudi prvi predsednik), kanadskega svetovnega kongresa in še kaj bi se našlo.
Zelo aktivno se je vključil v akcije za priznanje novonastale slovenske države, in sicer v političnem in tudi v finančnem ter moralnem smislu.
Po upokojitvi je začel preučevati zgodovino naseljevanja Slovencev v Kanadi in dal tudi pobudo za ustanovitev kanadsko-slovenskega zgodovinskega društva.

ko je škof Baraga prevzel škofovsko odgovornost za velik del Kanade, tudi za tistega okoli Toronta. Majhna cerkev, ki jo je postavil, še vedno stoji in služi svojemu namenu.
Kanada je dala postaviti spominsko ploščo na cerkev, s katero se zahvaljuje škofu Baragi za njegovo poslanstvo. Žal piše^ da je bil Baraga Avstrijec, sicer pa so vsi ostali podatki o njem točni. To je tudi edina plošča, ki jo je Kanada doslej posvetila kakšnemu Slovencu.
Stane Kranjc je ugotovil, da gre v primeru Kanade za tri večje emigracijske valove iz Slovenije: med prvo in drugo svetovno vojno, takoj po drugi svetovni vojni ter nekaj let kasneje še val ekonomskih emigrantov.
Po njegovem mnenju danes v Kanadi živi od 40 do 45.000 Slovencev, po uradni statistiki pa le okoli 30000. Med 188 različnimi narodnostmi v Kanadi se Slovenci po številu uvrščajo na 67. mesto. Organizirani so v približno 60 društvih, zelo pomembno vlogo pa igrajo tudi slovenske župnije, ki jih je šest: dve v Torontu, ena v Hamiltonu, ena v Montrealu in ena v Winnipegu. (Op. ur. AD: sicer je zgoraj v tekstu naštetih le pet.)
Krovni zakon o Slovencih v zamejstvu in po svetu, sprejet aprila lani, Stane Kranjc razume kot prvi korak na poti do cilja, to je do predstavnikov Slovencev iz sveta in zamejstva v slovenskem parlamentu. Šele potem bomo zares lahko govorili o eni Sloveniji, ne o treh.
Težko razume, da imajo številčno majhne manjšine v Sloveniji (italijanska in madžarska) svoje poslance v Državnem zboru, mnogo številnejši Slovenci po svetu pa ne.
Tudi sicer ni povsem zadovoljen s komunikaci-
jo na liniji Slovenija-Ka-nada. Zato je mnenja, da bi bilo treba pripraviti natančnejši program obiskov, saj brez te priprave od njih ni prave koristi. Za mladino in športne organizacije bi morali poiskati nove možnosti za izmenjavo obi-sokv in Slovenija mora še naprej pomagati študentom slovenskega rodu iz Kanade. To dela tudi že sedaj in dejstvo je, da se študentje po obisku Slovenije vračajo navdušeni.
Slovenska vlada naj bi pridobila vse arhive o Slovencih po svetu, tudi od nekdanje Jugoslavije, saj so navsezadnje naša last.
Slovenci v Kanadi so zelo hvaležni za slovensko veleposlaništvo v Kanadi, “ker učinkovito povezuje tam živeče Slovence”. Tudi sam s svojim obnašanjem ne želi odbiti nobenega Slovenca. Hvaležen je tudi izdajatelju in založniku revije Moja Slovenija, ki jo rojaki v Kanadi zelo cenijo.

Ameriški veleposlanik Thomas B. Robertson
Odhaja ljubitelj Slovenije

Ljubljana - Ljubljanske Križanke so 3. julija, na predvečer ameriškega praznika neodvisnosti, pokale po sivih. Razlog za to je bil tradicionalni sprejem, ki ga vsako leto na predvečer ameriškega praznika pripravi ameriško veleposlaništvo.
Tokrat je imel še poseben pomen. Na njem sta se namreč uradno od Slovenije poslovila ameriški veleposlanik Thomas B. Robertson in njegova žena Antoinette, ki sta v Slovenijo prišla leta 2004 in se jima konec poletja izteka mandat.
Robertson, ki ga je na položaj veleposlanika v Sloveniji leta 2004 imenovala administracija ameriškega predsednika Georgea Busha, je za slovo dejal, da je Slovenija ena tesnejših prijateljskih držav ZDA in da jo bo zagotovo še kdaj obiskal.
Dejal je. da verjame, da bo Slovenija uspešno predsedovala Evropski uniji, in dodal, da lahko pri tem zagotovo računa na pomoč njegove države.
Sicer pa si bodo Slovenci Robertsona, velikega ljubitelja (slovenskih) gora, zapomnili predvsem po njegovem pristnem občudovanju vsega slovenskega, dokaj uspešnem učenju slovenščine in številnih dobrodelnih akcijah, ki jih je organiziral.

Ena večjih akcij se je končala v prvem delu julija. ko je Robertson v Strunjanu končal svoj pohod po slovenskem delu evropske pešpoti E-6. S hojo je zbiral sredstva za mednarodni sklad za razminiranje, neprofitno slovensko organizacijo, katere poslanstvo je popolna odstranitev protipehotnih min v jugovzhodni Evropi.
Njegovo delo je precej uspešno, saj je od leta 1998 zbral več kot 210 milijonov dolarjev donacij. poleg očiščenja min na približno 70 milijonih kvadratnih metrov pa je pomagal več kot 900 žrtvam min.
Robertson je tako zagotovo eden tistih veleposlanikov, ki si jih bodo Slovenci zapomnili.

Približevanje evropskim standardom
Duhovna oskrba odslej tudi v slovenski policiji
Ljubljana - Potem ko so slovenski vojaki, ki se zaradi službenih nalog ne morejo udeleževati cerkvenih obredov, dobili to možnost z vojaškimi kurati, je bilo to pred kratkim omogočeno tudi policistom.
V Uradnem listu je bil namreč objavljen pravilnik o organizaciji in načinu duhovne oskrbe v policiji. Pravilnik, ki je eden od podzakonskih aktov zakona o policiji, bo izpolnil zahtevo ustave. ki pravi, da mora biti vsakomur omogočeno izražanje verske pripadnosti, in sicer tako, da bo tistim policistom, ki so zaradi narave svojega dela (pa tudi drugim, če
bodo to želeli) za duhovno oskrbo prikrajšani, to omogočeno tudi na delovnem mestu.
Pravilnik (začel je veljati 25. avgusta) podrobneje ureja čas. način in prostor, namenjen duhovni oskrbi v policiji. Po pravilniku je nadrejeni dolžan zagotoviti osebni pogovor ali obred z duhovnikom veroizpovedi, ki ji policist pripada, podroben opis nalog in obveznosti v zvezi s tem pa bodo določili z aktom o notranji organizaciji in sistemizaciji	delovnih
mest.
Pravilnik še določa, da se obredi in pogovori praviloma izvajajo v ustreznih prostorih policije.

Dopisnico so našemu listu poslali udeleženci izleta po Sloveniji učencev, učiteljstva in spremljevalcev Slovenske šole pri Mariji Vnebovzeti v Clevelandu.
verske skupnosti ali drugih primernih prostorih, čas, porabljen za to, pa se praviloma ne šteje v redni delovnik.
S pravilnikom so poleg vernih policistov in verskih skupnosti zadovoljni predvsem v naj večji verski skupnosti, to je v Rimskokatoliški cerkvi. V Slovenski škofovski konferenci so ga tako že pospremili z besedami, da gre za korak v približevanju evropskim standardom na področju duhovne oskrbe v policiji.
Rimskokatoliška cerkev je do zdaj že imela duhovnika, ki je v nekaterih primerih policistom, pridržanim osebam in njihovim sorodnikom ponujal versko oskrbo.

Ljubljana - Urška Bačovnik je danes že "partnerka" Janeza Janše z istimi pravicami kot uradne soproge. Vlad je namreč spremenila protokolarna pravila. V njih ni več govora o soprogi oziroma soprogu, ampak partnerju.

Pogreb je bil 28. avgusta v oskrbi Želetovega zavoda, kjer so tudi bili pogrebni obredi, sledil je pokop na pokopališču Highland Park.

Dne 19. avgusta je mirno zaspal komaj 11 dni star Charles R. Sumrada, rojen 8. avgusta kot sin Charlesa in Tracy, roj. Pereksta, vnuk Helen Sumrada. Pogreb je bil 23. avgusta.

Stephenu, hčerka Anne, roj. Bradač, in Louisa (oba že pok.), sestra Ludovica, Dorothy Jaworek, Lillian ter že pok. Anne Rajar, Rudol-pha, Josephiine Nowak in Louisa. Pogreb - je bil 25. avgusta v oskrbi Fortunovega zavoda na Fleet Ave. s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Lovrenca in pokopom na Kalvarije pokopališču.

Dne 24. avgusta je po dveletnem boju z rakom umrl 61 let stari Daniel J. Zupančič, mož Judith, oče Valerie Yehl, brat Edwarda, Thomasa, Williama in Patricije Nolan, bivši član in odbornik Northeast Yacht Club, zaposlen pri clevelandski pisarni Otis Ekvator. Pogreb je bil 29. avgusta s sv. mašo v cerkvi sv. Jeroma na Lake Shore Blvd. Pogreb je bil zavod DiDonato, 21900 Euclid Ave. v Euclidu.
