V^s^s in the case with many s \,Lch^C~r00ted churches in membership slowly Father Paul Krajnik at our Lady of Lourdes Shrine in Euclid, Ohio on Memorial Day. ________________ (Photo by JIM DEBEVEC) Sister Avsec Marks 50 Years tapered off, as younger family members found work and moved elsewhere or, in ensuring years, parishioners grew old and died. “As you know, young people marry and go after jobs, wherever they find them,” said Krajnik. “But (declining membership) here is mostly because the older people are dying. “But we are full of hope to continue for awhile,” said Krajnik. Although current membership is about 200, Krajnik, said the parish swelled to 1,895 members in 1952. In fact, the church roster increased to the point that many parishioners petitioned for the construction of a new church. After years of planning and fund-raising, Krajnik said a new church was built and was dedicated on December 7, 1952. But, by the mid-1960s, many of the parish’s original families had moved out of South Lorain. At this same time, a church school, maintained since the organization of the parish, dwindled to 86 students. The Sisters of Notre Dame, who had taught at the school, left the parish and the students transferred to the former St. Ladislaus School. Krajnik said the former school building is now used as a parish hall. The upstairs of the old church building, said Krajnik, is now used as a hall and the downstairs as a meeting place. The rectory stands between both the old and new churches. Although the decline in church membership would normally signal an end to the church itself, Krajnik said he believes Ss. Cyril and Methodius will survive and evolve, either through absorption into another church, or by being served by a so-called “weekend pastor.” Bishop Pilla said, “This (membership) number is not enough to save the church for another pastor after me,” said Krajnik. “But as long as I am here, and the people are still coming and still like the church and support the church, and the bills are paid, there will be no problem,” he said. “As the time comes for a new pastor, people will be more receptive to a merger with another church or to have a priest who comes here on weekends,” said Krajnik. “But as long as I am here. I’ll see that everything is okay.”_____________________ Thanks to Mary Sesek for submitting this article. Boznar completed the 500 mile pilgrimage walk to the tomb of St. James the Apostle, “Santiago de Compostela” in Spain, and returned home safe and sound, much to the delight of his parishioners and friends. He lost more than 20 pounds. Before he left, he noted that the pilgrimage takes 37 days of walking to complete, with an average of 7-8 hours a day of walking. Most of the way follows the thousand-year-old pilgrim’s trail over hills and mountains and valleys far away from the busy modem roads. Congratulations to Father Boznar on a truly remarkable accomplishment. We are all proud of you._________ New A.H. I believe in it and do ask others for their prayers when I feel I am in dire need of prayer. Last week Therese had some shopping to do and off she went to make her rounds, in her Toyota Camry, with its spinner hub caps just shining and spinning as she pulled away from our home with the sun hitting the spinner caps broadside. Therese was one tough looking grandiha as she sped down the street at 10 MPH. She was to be gone for a | while, and I had time on my hands. After I thanked God 1 that Therese hadn’t asked me 1 to go shopping with her, I went and dug out two VCR | tapes that two lovely lady | friends of mine had given me j a couple of years ago. They were tapes with men and women vocalists, with a variety of string, horns and accordions, button box and piano type, in taverns and all I over the beautiful countryside of Slovenia. I saw | mountains, streams and for-l ests, the very place my mom used to describe to me as a youngster, when she would always end her stories with this quote, “I don’t think there is a more beautiful country than Slovenia, but no other country more poor either.” For several hours I watched these two tapes. Therese came home and went about her business, as 1 finished the two tapes. Music may not have the power of prayer, but there is something healing in my body, as I listen to the vocalist, watch the musicians and observe the interesting surroundings of all involved in the making of these tapes. At times after my operation, I have experienced pain and discomfort, mostly discomfort. As I watched the tapes, it was pure pleasure for me. Did I hurt while the tapes played? No. Was 1 in pain? No. Was I healed? No. But I was smiling, in a comfortable state of mind and body, with a growling stomach as Therese prepared my supper. Yes, music does that to me. Music soothes me. I cannot be in an angry mood and enjoy music. Music is one of my blessings from God. So bring on the music and dump the anger. Our area was saddened this past week as so many of our young Marines were killed in this war on terror. No matter what your feelings, pray for our brave men and women who put their country ahead of their own safety. Please remember to pray for the grieving families who have sacrificed so much. Pray that terrorism does not succeed, and please Almighty God, bless our country and our allies in this terrible struggle the civilized world faces. Two persons cannot long be friends if they cannot forgive each other’s little failings. -Janez Mercina Ordination & First Mass of Gregor Celestina Gregor Celestina greets family and relatives after his ordination ceremony at the cathedral in Ljubljana. by TOM CELESTINA MIAMI, FL — Every year on the Feast of Saint Peter and Paul, the archdiocese of Ljubljana and Maribor ordain their seminarians to the priesthood. This year Slovenia ordained 24 new priests which is an unprecedented number for a country of two million people. Among the newly ordained was Gregor Celestina. I had the opportunity to witness Gregor’s ordination as well as his First Mass. Gregor is my second cousin and was raised in the Celestina family home in Zavine which is a small village near the town of Zagorje. Upon completing high school, Gregor had planned to study chemistry at the University of Ljubljana. However, after deep contemplation, he decided the priesthood was his life calling. In the later years of Yugoslavia, Gregor was raised during a time when religious vocation was not widely desired. In fact, I recall that when his home village of Zavine decided to build a new church, the then communist government had instilled a number of costly road-blocks to slow the process. For example, the government required the parish to build a bunker type structure underneath the church at a tremendous cost - as much as the church itself. Nonetheless, the faith in Gregor’s family was strong. Traditional church customs were practiced at home and participating in church activities were the norm. When Pope John Paul II visited Slovenia in 1997, Gregor and many of his friends attended all three Masses which were held in Ljubljana, Maribor and Postojna. It was as if the Pope’s visit had lifted Slovenia’s Christian spirit and inspired him to take part in the changes that were taking place all around the country. In 1999, Gregor made the decision to be part of the new revolution and heed his calling to the priesthood. Once a priest is ordained, it is customary that his First Mass be celebrated in his hometown. Gregor celebrated his First Mass in Zavine on a beautiful sunny Sunday morning of July 3rd. Events preceding the First Mass included a “Welcome Home” celebration held on Saturday evening. The evening began with Gregor being greeted by the pastor and many of his fellow parishioners. Being that Gregor is the first priest ever to come from the village of Zavine, the evening was especially festive and exciting and filled with prayer and song. The next morning, by tradition, Gregor, left his farm home with the blessing of his parents Ani and Viki. He was greeted by a large waiting crowd some dressed in their national costume. Before departing for the church, the trip was preceded by speeches, which included some stories of Gregor’s early years, poems, and songs. From the farm house, the waiting crowd slowly made their way to the little church in Kisovec. The Mass was attended by over 2,000 locals and it was heard on “Radio Ognjišče” and “Radio Slovenija.” There were more than a half dozen priests in attendance including my uncle, Fr. Frank Kosem, and Fr. Lozje Snoj, who had a profound impact on Gregor’s early years in Ljubljana. Also in attendance were our own St. Vitus Slovenian school students who were touring Slovenia as part of their graduation curriculum-Despite the hot sun, this day will certainly not be forgotten by Gregor any time soon- After the Mass, a reception and lunch was held at the homestead. A large tent was constructed for the 400-plus guests. During the course of the lunch and dinner, speeches, prayers and a iiuiuucr ui comical dotes were shared. Earn* 1 * guest was given a specially commemorated bottle 0 wine and a rosary which Gregor had obtained during his recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Now that the celebrating is over, Gregor’s life in the priesthood has begun. After a month of relaxation a1) reflection, Gregor will beg'11 his assignment in Kranj in 3 fairly large parish. Certain^’ Gregor will endure many challenges in the coming years, but with perseverance^ patience and the support ® his parish and family, he w'l have a profound impact on our church in Slovenia. W wish him well. Žakelj Family Chronicle by ANTON ŽAKELJ, Translated and edited C by JOHN ŽAKELJ (Continued) Around 1924, some shoemakers, including Ata, left the church savings and loan cooperative and founded the People’s Savings and Loan. The following year, they gave all their profits to Ivana Gantar and her family (my future wife’s mother and family). Ivana lost her husband in World War I, had six children, no income, and flood damage in 1925. Another example of Ata’s generosity: He knew that his brother Matvez owed money at the Shoemaker’s Cooperative, and that he would never be able to pay off those debts. So Ata took care of some of those debts himself. Ata didn’t seem worried that we might not have enough money for our own family. Ata founded two meat-buying cooperatives, at different times. I remember when the butchers were selling meat at 10 dinars per kilo while they were buying live cows at 2 to 2.5 dinars. So Ata organized people to bring down the price of meat. He got enough members who contributed money to hire their own butcher. Soon the other butchers reduced their prices from 10 dinars/kilo to 5 and there was no longer a need for a buyers’ cooperative. Ata returned all the money that People had invested - with-0ut taking anything out for bis own expenses. A few years later, prices were up a8ain, and he repeated the same thing until the prices eame down again. Anton Grom and Matija Selak, both tanners, returned from America about two years after WWI. They reached an agreement with a Number of master shoemak-ers to build a cooperative tannery along a stream in our v*ilage. I think each share "'as about 10,000 dinars, with the total invested capital about 1 million dinars. Grom "'as the manager, while my father was the secretary and treasurer. They did that for *5 years, until Tone Gantar j*nd Anton Anzelm Jr. °ught out their shares. The c°whides were perfectly tanned, so they sold well. Ata was also the secre-b^y-treasurer for the Water •stribution Cooperative for Niany years. And around ^3 8, he was elected as the j’ecretary-treasurer of the ades association, and con-JNued in that capacity until e various trades associa-•ons joined into a large re-^l°nal association in 1941. to addition, Ata was one of the founders of the construction cooperative for the building of the Cooperative Home from 1938 to the arrival of the Germans in 1941. The Cooperative- Home was one of the largest buildings in Ziri until the partisans burned it in 1944. Ata collected about 100 spruce trees from the surrounding hills for the construction of that building. Regarding Ata’s honesty, I remember a few more examples: Twice he dealt with poor management at the church. The first time, he helped collect money for new church bells. The collected funds, which were enough to pay for the bells, were given to the pastor. The bells were ordered and installed, but the pastor decided to use the money for other things which he thought were more important to the church. When the bell foundry demanded payment, there was no money. Workers arrived from the foundry to repossess the bells from the bell tower. I think it was due to Ata’s intervention that the Ljubljana savings and loan paid the foundry and the bells stayed in the bell tower. Another time, a statue of St. Andrew was stolen from our church. Ata went to the antique stores in Ljubljana, asking if anyone had brought in a statue for sale. He didn’t find our statue, but he found one that was very similar, so he bought it and brought it back to our church. It wasn’t long before the second statue suffered the same fate. Ata went to Ljubljana again, and this time he found our statue. They said that a certain gentleman had brought it in. After that, we had peace with the statues. His health began to rapidly deteriorate when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place...reports of a six-year-old boy charged wjth sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, AUGUST 11, 2005 AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, AUGUST 11, 2005 r 4 Mlakar Walks Down Memory Lane& by RAY MLAKAR Once again thanks to one and all for your prayers, calls, cards and concern, for with all those prayers, I am sure I have been moved down on St. Peter’s Call List. Special thanks to Sue and Andrew Cashen from Madison, Ohio who sent me a special huge pen to insure I would not run low on lead to continue the jokes. It is for sure that now, no one can say I don’t have any “lead” in my pencil. Before I go on, my congratulations to a new writer Mrs. Marie Dular. If you recall, Marie wrote a great article on the many benefits of “vodka.” Our readers will have to admit the American Home news is not only a great newspaper, but we do everything to keep you well informed with our good health tips on WD-40 and now with vodka. All your aches and pains will soon be a thing of the past. Here is one use for vodka which I will use promptly, that is to use it as a spray to kill wasps and bees. Under my back porch I have a stone slab and the critters have made a home there and in spite of all the spray cans I bought, it has done nothing except brought more of the insects. But now by putting vodka in a spray bottle, well those buggers will go out in style. What a way to go to meet their maker - fully intoxicated. I was thinking of making a little bottle and keeping it on the front seat of the car, you know to clean my glasses, even the windshield, spray a little on the forehead when I get a headache, but with my luck, just as sure as God made green apples, I would get pulled over by a cop. Can you see me explaining I was using the vodka to clean my glasses, spray my head to ease the tension pain, and also explaining I was trying to spray a wasp that got in the car. The cop would lose no time in calling for “backup,” while thinking, “We have to get this old man committed.” But if that were the case, the spray bottle would go with me. With that in mind, Marie Dular, please keep those helpful hints coming for you are a life-saver and fortunately I don’t even have to use my Medicare Card or my Blue Cross Card. I knew that without a doubt that when God called Sister Mother Theresa home, she would send a replacement and we are most fortunate in having Marie Dular in our midst. Thanks, Marie. Thank God we got a relief from the hot and humid weather. Guess for having the most days in the temperatures over 90 degrees took center stage, but thank God all that is behind us now. The Good Lord also seen to it that we got our share of rain for which we are all grateful. The lawns are perking up and gardens are doing better, thanks to God’s bountiful rain and copier temperatures. As for “Happy Harry”, my Caim Terrier, he is still in hopes that my sister will stop by with an egg sausage croissant. Sorry, Harry, I am the head cook and head den mother. It is my cooking or nothing, for he knows and I know that a steady diet of “fast foods” is not good for the tummies. Speaking of dogs, heard a joke the other day about a dog. A guy goes by the pet shop and sees this little dog that he fell in love with and decided to buy it, but it proved that the dog was dumber than his looks. The guy took the dog out to do his business and the dog went by the tree and lifted up the wrong leg and tinkled on his master’s leg. Seems I am on a roll now. Little Johnny asked his grandmother how old she was. Grandma answered, “39 and holding.” Johnny thought for a moment and then said, “And how old would be if you let go?” Okay, one more. Two young boys were spending the night with their grandparents. At bed time, the two boys knelt to say their prayers when the youngest began praying at the top of his lungs, “I PRAY FOR GRANDMA, I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE, I PRAY FOR A NEW GAME BOARD, I PRAY FOR A NEW DVD.” His brother leaned over and nudged the young brother and said, “Why are you shouting your prayers? God ain’t deaf. The little brother said, “No, but Grandma is.” Can you guess what occasion prompted these distinguished-looking gentlemen to gather for a nice group photo? Hint; it took place in St. Vitus Church on Dec. 31, 1995. The answer is it was after the last regular 12 noon Mass held there. Celebrating the Mass was Father Victor Cimperman (center). To his right is pastor Rev. Joseph (500-mile walker) Boznar. The other gentlemen are the long-time 12 o’clock Mass ushers. Left to right, Bob Novak (deceased), Joe Mismas, Mirko Orel, and attorney Ed (Wally) Turk. __________(Photo by SUE TURK - photo compliments of Ed Turk) »iVi'v't v,,; ymr. "> Okay, one more for the road and this one takes the cake. By the way if “Father” tells you this joke in church, you know he gets the American Home too. Sister Mary, who worked for a home health agency, was out making her rounds visiting homebound patients when she ran out of gas. As luck would have it, a gas station was just a block away. She walked to the station to borrow a can and buy gas. The attendant told her the only gas can he owned had been loaned out but she could wait until it was returned. Since the nun was on the way to see a patient, she decided not to wait and walked back to her car. She looked for something in her car she could use to fill with gas and spotted the bedpan she was taking to a patient. Always resourceful, she carried the bedpan to the station, filled it with gas and carried it back to her car. As she was pouring the gas into her tank, two men watched from across the street. One of them turned to the other said, “If it starts, I’m turning Catholic.” With that, time to close and looking at the page, I never got to continue about our trip to Slovenia back in 1979, but be rest assured I will get to it but you have to admit in this issue and the last you got some good healthy, helpful hint" on the proper use of vodka. American Medical Journal, eat your heart out. With that May the Good Lord shower his blessings on you and keep' you in good health and happy spirits. Learning to ignore things is one of the great paths to inner peace. -Joe Snyder The Great Meteor Crater of Arizona lies between the towns of Flagstaff and Winslow. In 1852, Father Baraga bought some land upon which he constructed a church for the many Catholic immigrants of the area. The Holy Redeemer . Church, completed in 1854, still stands. In this, and other mining settlement churches, Baraga and the priests he recruited were known to often preach three sermons on Sundays, in English, German, and French. Ontonagon... St. Patrick’s, the first Catholic church in Ontonagon (1854) was located near the shore between the Ontonagon River and the present township park. South on the old Norwich Road are the ruins of St. Francis Xavier church, built in 1856. From Norwich return to Ontonagon and take U.S. 45 south to Rockland. Now a mission church, St. Mary’s is the home of the oldest organ in the Upper Peninsula, purchased in 1859 by Bishop Baraga. Mackinac Island... Fr. Baraga first set foot on the island in May 1831 en route to Arbre Croche with Bishop Edward Fenwick. Although Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli, resident priest, was not on the island when Fr. Baraga passed by, they soon met and became friends. In one letter Baraga called Mazzuchelli his “spiritual director.” Both as priest and as bishop, Baraga regularly visited the island for extended and stop-over visits. On January 13, 1855, Bishop Baraga wrote in his Diary: “This morning with a prayer and an address, I inaugurated the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which the Rev. Mr. Jahan had initiated, and which hopefully, will do much good. May God grant it.” In 1857, he suffered “the great affront” when a “friend” publicly accused him, in the sanctuary after 9 J- Ontario \ /V FortWMant'«? Each of these three towns were once a thriving mining community. In Houghton, called Portage Lake in Baraga’s time, is where he dedicated St. Ignatius Loyola church in 1859. Often Baraga, on snowshoes or by canoe, traveled this route between Eagle Harbor and L’Anse. At the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock, a marker indicates the grave of Rev. Edward Jacker, Baraga’s most trusted friend. Rev. Jacker assisted the Bishop during his illness, was present when he died, and administered the diocese until Bishop Mrak’s installation. Hancock was such a thriving community in the 1860’s that Baraga seriously considered moving his See City there rather than to Marquette. In Calumet, St. Paul’s church is on the National Registry of Historic Buildings and is part of the Calu- met National Park. It traces almost to the time of Baraga and is a fine example of an early ethnic (Slovenian) church. Throughout Calumet are reminders of the vast copper industry which shaped the area in Baraga’s time. Hope to see everyone in Cleveland on Sept. 3, 4 and 5 as we celebrate the life of Bishop Frederic Baraga, one of the foremost Slovenian missionaries of all time. presents North America’s Premier Event the Traditional THANKSGIVING CLEVELAND POLKA WEEKEND November 24 - 26, 2005 CLE VELANDMLgif f 127 public square * DOWNTOWN CLEVELAND at ST. Because of the rainy day, the concert was moved to the Hudson High School Auditorium. (I apologize to whomever had a difficult time finding it.) It was a super concert. Don Wojtila and his band did a terrific job along with Christine Hibbs. It was a lively concert and this got everyone in the audience participating (and the majority was not Slovenian.) The crowd loved the Slovenian songs, as I did. Throughout the program, various people went to the mike and said a remembrance of Al: - Tony Petkovšek, Chris, and the band members, and members of the community. Two of my sons were able to come into town and they were surprised by the wonderful friends we have. Everyone loved Al and he loved everyone. It was a night to remember forever. I had made the sauce at home, froze i(, and carried it with me on the plane. By the time we were ready for supper, it was defrosted. Sunday morning after breakfast of homemade cinnamon raisin bread, we all lounged around the pool. In the afternoon we drove to Red Hook to have lunch at Duffy’s Love Shack. Duffy’s is not located on the beach, but in the middle of a parking lot. Once inside, you forget the location and just enjoy the tropical decor. One daughter had a drink served in a container with mermaids on the side; I had a drink in a shark’s head vase. After lunch of southwestern chicken, shrimp, and plantains, we stopped at the local grocery store for more provisions for the week. Monday, my oldest daughter, her husband, and I went into Charlotte Amelia to shop and have lunch. It took us almost an hour to find a place to park. Even though there were only two cruise ships in the harbor, the shops were packed with people. I have never seen so many places selling the same souvenirs, tee-shirts, and gold jewelry. It was so overwhelming that I didn’t even feel like shopping. I had intended to get myself another gold necklace, like the one my husband had bought me years ago when we were on a Caribbean cruise with the oldest granddaughters. But the high pressure salesmen in the stores completely turned me off. I ended up only getting some refrigerator magnets in the shape of tropical fish. We decided to get some lunch before looking for an Internet cafe. I saw two women sitting on a bench enjoying a take-out meal that looked really good. So I stopped and asked them where they had purchased their lunch. They directed us to a really nice restaurant where I was able to order liver and onions. After lunch we left my son-in-law at the Internet cafe and we wandered around for a while going in • and out of shops and still not buying. We found a very small casino (four video poker machines) and lost a couple of dollars. Even though we left town about 4 p.m. we never arrived back at the villa until almost 7. The traffic was really heavy and we had to stop and get some more groceries. I knew the rest of the family would be worried about us because it was getting dark and the roads were very narrow. I used my cell phone to try to call from the grocery store parking lot, but all I got was voice mail, so I turned my phone off. When they tried to call me of course my phone was off. We had promised to stop and buy everyone milk shakes before returning. A store called the Udder Delight was close to the villa and is famous for its milk shakes. The woman at the counter was so incredibly slow, we thought we would never get out of there. An interesting thing about the shakes, you can get them with alcohol. I settled for a simple chocolate shake with strawberry ice cream. We had no plans for Tuesday, just enjoying the villa, pool, and hot tub. In the afternoon we were entertained by the pelicans that flew almost level with our pool deck. It took me almost the entire week before I was finally able to get a picture of them; they would always disappear as soon as I got the camera out. Wednesday, we left husband and oldest son-in-law, while we went into Red Hoolj for a day of sailing and snorkeling. It turned out to be one of our favorite trips. We sailed on the Rumbaba, with a crew of two and one other couple. After getting settled, the mate served us a breakfast of spinach and cheese quiches plus homemade muffins. We sailed to St. John’s and snorkeled in the morning. My oldest daughter wasn’t going snorkeling, because she said she couldn’t see a thing without her glasses. The mate, Karen, lent her a prescription mask so she could see the fish. When we came out of the water, we had a wonderful hot shower to rinse off all the salt. During the trip the crew provided all the soft drinks, beer and mixed drinks we wanted. I have been on other snorkeling trips, where beverages were sharply limited and this was a nice change. The captain attached a small propane grill to the rail and made our lunch. We started with appetizers of grilled shrimp, raw vegetables and dip. Our lunch consisted of our choice of grilled fish or BQ chicken; asparagus, salad with dried cranberries, pineapple salsa, and garlic bread. Dessert was ginger cookies. The food was wonderful and we really felt stuffed. In the afternoon we Call us today! 216-261-1050 Euclid Travel can help you with all your travel plans. •Tours •Cruise •AirlineTickets •Condo Rentals •Shore Excursions •Automobile Rentals •Vacation Packages 22078 Lakeshore Blvd. Euclid, Ohio 44123 216-261-1050 euclidtravel@aol.com www. euclidtravel .com i| bBoJI liHIM fioeliW <} Vic i j hnu mptft View from upstairs balcony of villa. moved to another island and snorkeled again. On the return trip, my son-in-law had a great time sailing the boat. Before meeting the rest of the family for dinner at the Hook, Line, and Sinker, we did a little shopping. I bought some earrings for my granddaughter for Christmas and I looked at gold coins for myself. Either the coins were too small or too expensive. I was really tempted to buy an Alexander the Great coin, but it was $450 and I thought it was more than I wanted to spend. We ate dinner on a covered deck with a great view of the harbor. The highlight of this meal was the lobster. I had never had Caribbean lobster before and they don’t have big claws, just huge tails. We all got 1 lb. lobsters and ended up taking some of it home because we couldn’t eat it all. (To Be Continued) Lipizzan Horses Book Available VENICE. SNYDER After visiting Ray Mlakar and Rudy Flis at Parma Community Hospital it has inspired my writing proclivities to relate some items that are newsworthy. On November 27, 2004 we lost another solid citizen from St. Lawrence. Richie ‘Gramma” Peskar was a leader among his fellow students back in the late 1940s. His demeanor and presence commanded respect despite bis small stature. His voice and wiry physique exhumed confidence and righteous-ness. When he left the neighborhood his career became a blur to my recollec-dons. His younger brother ‘°ny filled in some of the details. He entered the Air Force and served during the Ko-rean War. I remember him 0n one of his furloughs. He ^as nil spit and polish, with is pants tucked into his joined boots which would ave given him a 4.0 during lnspection. He lived in Maple Heights while raising his amily of eight children, six boys (Richard Jr., William, aniel, Michael, Mark, and imothy; two daughters, ^nn Marie and Mary Wag-ber. He had 18 grandchil-ren. His death was preceded ^ his son, Thomas, and rother John. He had two Others, Ray and Tony with Slsters Josephine and Rose- b^ry. He was a sales repre-entative for Coyne Textiles ^ Cleveland, Ohio, manu-j^cturers of industry textiles. e retired after 30 years of eryice in 1988. r. He loved woodworking, ann ’ an(* debating politics, c,. Was very proud of his ‘drefr. He was a past ®rriber of the American e8ion, Catholic by Faith, and a Korean War Veteran. He retained his Slovenian heritage as he kept in tune with local polka activities in his Florida area where he lived for the pasf five years. Frank Rajar passed away early this year after spending the last few months in somewhat discomfort at Marymount Place. He was affectionately known as , “Baldy,” not for his hair styling, but from a childhood nickname. He was a contemporary of Ray and Bill Hrovat, Horse Jeric, Louie Supan, Bemie Cesar, and all of the early Laurentians. He was a lifetime hardball player, a race track railbird, an avid golfer, a good baseball and basketball player, was one of the early Laurentians, a college and prosports enthusiast, a crafty home-spun philosopher, a brother of Rosalie and Mary Ann Turk, a friend of many, a veteran of the Korean War. As a confirmed bachelor, he was the proverbial “Dutch Uncle.” In my youth he once took me aside and asked me in a stem manner, “Who do you think you are?” As a smart aleck kid, I was taken aback and wondered what he meant. Hfe explained. “Just because you were hospitalized a couple of years ago and are the youngest in your family, you do not have to expect the rest of the world to cater to your whims. When you grow up you might realize that you can get along much better if you are more considerate towards others.” This sage advice came to mind whenever I thought of Baldy. After graduating from Benedictine High School with Ceasar, Beanie Resnik, Bill Hrovat and other dignitaries, and a stint in the Army, his career took him to Cleveland Pneumatic Tool where he excelled in his trade. He worked the graveyard shift for some time and on one occasion I went golfing with him on a Monday morning. He observed all the gloomy workers waiting for a bus to begin another week of toil. He said that it looks like nobody enjoys their job. Wait until Friday afternoon, there will be nothing but smiles. Although highly opinionated, he was not disputatious or confrontational. His close friendship with Louie Supan, Beanie Resnik, Billy Turk, and Richie Blatnik was lifelong and true. Another passing early this year was Larry Blatnik, the long-time president of KSKJ St. Joseph’s Lodge 146. Larry was an early musician with the St. Lawrence Band during the 1930s and was the first neighborhood man to be inducted into the Army in 1941. Although he was in special services as a musician, he did partake in the landing at Normandy as an artillery specialist and was duly decorated. Fr. Oman tried to have him re-organize the band after the war, but the old guard was off to their own pareers and marital situations, so the attempt was in vain. All three of these men were a credit to St. Lawrence and will be remembered and missed. May they rest in God’s holy peace. Pennebaker, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of Texas, in Austin. In fact, researchers at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, found 21 cancer patients slept longer and with fewer intermptions during the night after venting their feelings on paper compared with 21 patients who wrote about their diet and exercise. To stop stress from stealing your ZZZ’s, Dr. Pennebaker recommends setting aside 20 minutes each day for four consecutive days to write. Find a place where you won’t be distracted, and pour out your thoughts without stopping - of worrying about spelling or grammar. It’s not the punctuation, but the release of feelings that will make you feel better and snooze more soundly. The higher you build, the more elevators you need. By the time a building reaches about 80 stories, the elevators take up so much space there usually is not sufficient floor space to generate enough rental income to make the building profitable. The Sears Tower in Chicago, at 1,450 feet, is the tallest building in the United States. , The tallest building in the world is the Taipei 101 building in Taipei, Taiwan. It opened last year and rises 1,470 feet, exactly 20 feet higher than the Sears Tower. But it won’t be the tallest building for long befcause a building under construction in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, will rise 160 stories and a staggering 2,624 feet - nearly a half mile into the sky - when completed in a few years from now. HAPpy News ©©©©© Some days words just flow; and other times it's like the grass, all dried up... Our HAP picnic July 13. was very nicely attended; but we still wanted more. The sun was shining, the food was great, and no one had to go home early. It was truly great to see John Habat among us. John has a peck of troubles, but he's looking much better. He was with us with just a cane, which signifies progress! (No wheelchair!) Way to go, John. People had fun listening to music, and some were eager to dance. Mitzi sure knows how to twirl! The food was good and plentiful! Anyone going home hungry has only him or herself to blame. Couldn't decide which was better: Roast Beef, Sloppy Joes, Slovenian Sausages or Hot Dogs...............so I had them all! Pastry tables were groaning with all the homemade goodies; and there was plenty of liquid refreshments to cool one off. Bottled water was in high demand; (imagine that?!)", guess all the designated drivers were thirsty, too. A biiiiig "THANK YOU" to all who worked so hard to give US a good time. St. John K., and St. Matthew Z. led several teams of "angels", doing everything from directing parking, to holding raffles, and running the kitchen, bar, and pastry tables. Just to let you know, guys, your hard work is deeply appreciated. Give yourselves a BIG hand, too! Mark your calendars for the Federation of American Slovenian Senior Citizens picnic Wednesday August 31. Tickets are $18. pp, same as last year. (And you thought the bargain days are over) You may still be able to get some. Julie Zalar will be cooking, on all burners, I might add; and Frank Moravcik will be playing for our dancing and listening pleasure. Next HAP meeting is Aug. 10: MaryJo Ivec, LPN, from Gateway Retirement community will be our guest speaker. Should be interesting... Hope you are all paid-up for the Catskils Resort trip. Time is coming up fast, we leave Fri. Aug. 16, and return Aug. 19. A terrific trip; it will be hard to take in everything. So much recreation is on the list you'll have to clone yourself to try it all. Have a good summer, y'all. Stay healthy! Bumblebee. Yellow Tablecloth Gain clarity with a yellow tablecloth. One economist working in Slovenia’s central bank calls it a recipe for disaster. “It really is a mystery to me how the economy is still doing well,” he says. Yet the government has also kept discretionary spending impressively low. The deficit last year fell to 1.9 percent of GDP. This has allowed the inflation rate to fall in spite of rising energy costs. In addition, many of the “red directors,” as members of Slovenia’s old boy network of chief executives are known, have proved themselves capable corporate leaders. Gorenje, a white goods maker, Merkatur, a retailing champion, and Elan, a sporting goods manufacturer, to name three, have all performed remarkably well both in and outside Slovenia. Small and medium sized companies are thriving, too, particularly in niche sectors connected to the electronics, automotive and software industries. EU membership has accelerated the decline of textiles, furniture making and food processing. But the elimination of customs checks at the borders with Austria, Italy and Hungary, where goods were often delayed for hours or even days, has helped other companies prosper. Exports and imports each rose by more than 12 percent last year. Slovenian companies continue to enjoy strong growth in the former Yugoslav markets of Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia-Montenegro tourists and business travelers. Overnight stays in March for travelers from the UK were up 86 percent year to year. The new government, led by prime minister Janez Jansa, will have its chance to create more success stories. Mr. Jansa has promised to renew privatization in several sectors, from banking and telecoms to energy and steel. He is moving cautiously, however, as this will surely test the appetite for openness among die public and even within Mr. Jansa’s tenuous coalition, which holds a slim majority in parliament. Potential foreign investors are not the only ones hoping for a shakeup. Small and medium sized businesses across the country have long complained that they, too, are outsiders in their own country. They want more access to capital from state-controlled banks, ..more'acc^jg.;Jaflcj. palities and state-owned companies and less bureaucracy. The old rules, they say, favor only a handful of companies with political competition. Amid all the frustration for businesses, though, the Slovenian economy continues to bubble. Growth reached 4.6 percent last year and is expected to hit 4 percent this year. That is reassuring but perhaps it also means that policy makers will feel little urgency to push bold reforms, as has been the case for the last 14 years. In foreign policy, Mr. Jansa’s conservative government has impressed for its lack of radicalism, particularly in its relations with neighboring Croatia. Further abroad, Slovenia’s foreign ministry has been playing a prominent role in several international hot spots through the rotating chair of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). In that role Dimitri Rupel, Slovenia's foreign minister, has found himself mostly brokering a US-Russian dispute over the role of the OSCE. The US wants more democracy while the Russians, annoyed at watching pro-westem activists topple antidemocratic regimes on their periphery, want the OSCE to concentrate more on economic projects. Mr. Rupel has also shifted some of the OSCE’s attention back to the Balkans where Europe’s most intractable dispute still simmers in Kosovo. With his old contacts in Belgrade and Pristina, Mr. Rupel believes he can help the two sides build badly needed trust. Mr. Rupel has not had resounding success and the Slovenian public seems non-pulsed by his international forays. Nevertheless, foreign diplomats feel the high profile job has profited the country’s image by showing a Slovenia that is eager to engage the wider world. A record crowd of 410+ diners enjoyed a delicious steak or chicken dinner at the beautiful Slovenska Pristava. The weather was perfect, the food delicious, and the music and fireworks were spectacular. A very coordinated effort between the kitchen and grilling volunteers along with the musicians and bartenders kept all in attendance well cared for. While Tom and Joey Žnidaršič, Miš Radisek, Stan Rus and Dan Foreman (and others) shed excess pounds cooking the steaks, Marge Žnidaršič along with Lynette Radisek, Ani Sterle, Maria Štepec, Vera Foreman and Marge Leden were the kitchen die-hards. Terri Vogel and Marge Rus were responsible for the excellent decorations and ample supply of tickets. It took 12 plus bartenders to keep everyone’s thirst satisfied during the event with a particular thank you to Joe Radisek Jr., Bob and Tom Štepec, Pete Domanko (Jr. and Sr.) along with many others. A huge thank you goes to Matt Grdadolnik who organized a fabulous band for the evening’s event with names such as John Nemec, Tine Ribic, Tony Nemec, Mike Dolinar, and Tony Ovsenik. The event was crowned with a spectacular fireworks display generously donated by Joey Žnidaršič, Ron and Stan Rus along with Frank Kogovšek. Everyone in attendance enjoyed a very special evening, one that will be hard to duplicate at any price. They know their attendance made a significant contribution to the new hall building project presently underway at the beautiful Slovenska Pristava. It was densely forested. The climate and rainfall were unpredictable. The land was bad, mostly porous Karst. It had droughts. It had frequent hailstorms. It was tough country that was difficult to farm, because every new farm had to be cut from the forest. The native Slovenians knew this, which is why so few settled there prior to the coming of the Gottscheer Germans. Following the feudal custom of making feudal domains more productive economically and militarily, Count Frederick recruited and sent from Ortenburg domains in Carinthia and Tyrol settlers to clear the lands and establish new villages in the whole area of Gottschee. Gottschee itself was probably founded sometime around 1270. It is first mentioned in records of 1310, and more definitely in the year 1330, when the archbishop of Aquileia asks the Count of Ortenburg to nominate priests to be pastors for the parishes of Ossiunitz, Gottenitz, Gottschee, Pol-land, and Reifnitz. Three of the towns mentioned in the archbishop’s letter - Ossiu-nitz/Oslinice, Gottenitz / Gotenice, and Gottschee / Kočevje - were in the newly established domain of Gottschee. To get peasants to move from their estates in Carinthia to come to Gottschee, the, Ortenburg lords granted special privileges, such as: • Large farmsteads, consisting of an entire Bavarian-size chunk of land (about 50 U.S. acres), as long as the colonists would clear the allotted forest plots. • Documented rights to exclusive use of portions of the forest for building materials, hunting, trapping, and extraction of other resources, such as ferns for animal feed and food. • Right to buy, sell, and exchange their land and forest holdings amongst themselves. • Right to come and go as they pleased, a right no other group of peasants in Europe had at the time. • Relative few fees (tithes and taxes) as compared to the more developed parts of Carinthia and Camiola. Expansion of the Domain of Gottschee How many Carinthian and Tyrolean colonists took up the count’s offer is not known, but in the year 1370, the emperor “made available” 300 families from the area of Franconia and Thuringia in Germany for settlement in Gottschee as noted in a document from the archives of the archbishop of Aquileia. My guess is that these families had been involved in some sort of rebellion and were being “banished to the frontier” where they could cause less trouble. Because of this influx, along with the growth of the original settlers, the Orten- burgs and their successors opened up new villages. We can see the rapid growth of Gottschee domain by the original settlers, the Ortenburgs and their successors opened up new villages. We can see the rapid growth of Gottschee domain by the fact that already in 1393, the town of Gottschee was raised to the level of a “market town” and accrued all the rights that market towns had in the middle ages. The Ortenburg lords owned Gottschee until the year 1418, when the last Count of Ortenburg died and his estates in Camiola passed into the hands of the Counts of Cilli. When the last Count of Cilli died in a battle against the Turks at Belgrade in 1456, the Cilli lands in Camiola and Styria passed by inheritance agreement into the hands of the Habsburgs. Thus, all the individual domains, estates, and properties that had been personally held by the counts of Ortenburg and Cilli now became the personal properties of the Habsburgs - who were also the ruling dukes of Camiola. The Habsburgs originally governed their hundreds of new feudal domains in Camiola with appointed stewards. Gottschee had by this time evolved into three “manors” (Amter) of Upper Gottschee, Lower Gottschee, and Rieg. Sometimes there were stewards appointed in each manor; at other times, one steward managed the whole domain for the absentee landlord. Impact of the Turkish Invasions That the Habsburg Emperors had a keen sense of the threats to the borders of the Empire is shown during the period when the Ottoman Empire was gobbling up the Balkan countries one after another and their armies began to reach the borders of the Holy Roman Empire. By the year 1463, the country of Bosnia was already under the control of the Ottoman invader. Very shortly after this -in 1569 to be exact - the Ottoman Turks attacked the Holy Roman Empire exactly in the area of Gottschee. This was the first of 12 major invasions by the Turks of southern Camiola over the next 120 years. It is estimated that over 200,000 persons were taken prisoner in Camiola and Lower Styria during this time and sent to Bosnia to farm and produce goods for the Turkish army, or be sold into slavery in other areas of the Ottoman Empire. It was not until the ending of the 16th century that Gottschee and southern Camiola were able to feel secure again. During the period of the Ottoman wars, Gottschee went on a “war footing.” All labor, agriculture production, and military resources were devoted to the defense of the border. Habsburg Leasing Policy The Habsburgs abandoned the idea of managing their many local domains (such as Gottschee) through appointed stewards and begin a system of “leasing” these domains to nobles who would pay the Habsburg owner a large fee, in return for which the leasing lord would take all the tithes and taxes paid by the peasant subjects. The first appointed lord lease-holders of Gottschee were the Counts Hohenwart, Thum, and Ungnad, who were members of the Ritter families with ties to the Teutonic Knights who had Christianized and pacified Prussia and the Baltic lands, now in Camiola to defend against the new enemies of Christ and crown. In addition to governing Gottshcee, these “border lords” had im- portant military responsibilities. Many were captains of troops of soldiers. Those Gottscheer peasants not directly involved in military units were pressed into service as laborers, craftsmen, and wagoners for the supply and support of the border army. City, Seal of Gottschee It was during this time, in 1471 that Gottschee was elevated to the status of city, receiving a municipal charter and Burgrecht. In 1492, after the particularly disastrous Turkish attack of that year, and which almost completely destroyed the town of Gottschee, the emperor granted the people of Gottschee, Kostel, Polland, and Reifnitz the famous Hausierpatent which allowed the residents of these domains to sell goods that they produced throughout the Habsburg lands of Austria and Germany. The Gottscheer Hausierer was well known throughout Germany and Austria well into the 12th century. Blagay Family From 1547 until 1613, the lord lease-holders of Gottschee were the Counts of Blagay. The Blagay’s had a profound impact on Gottschee. First, they were Croa-tians. Second, like their predecessors, they were military leaders on the military border of the empire. Third, they brought with them a number of settlers who were refugees from Croatia who had lost their homes during the Turkish wars. Many of these people settled in Gottschee and southern Camiola. These refugees were sometimes called Uskoks; but they (the settlers who stayed) seem to have been mostly Catholic Croatians and displaced Slovenians. It is during this period in the latter half of the 16lh century, that we find the introduction of many Germanized Slavic names and Slavicized German names in Gottshcee. The former occurred as the mostly Croatian and Slovenian immigrants arrived to occupy vacant farms. They were assimilated into the German-speaking community in Gottschee. The Slavicization of German names in Gottschee occurred because the Blagay lords brought with them stewards, judges, administrators, etc., who were Croatians, and who recorded many names in the Croatian fashion. As a result one sees many Gottscheer names ending with “itsch.” The fourth impact of the Blagay rule was their attempt to institute the Croatian method of feudal administration in Gottschee. this was very different from the Austrian system and causes considerable conflicts in Gottschee, with its own method of established rights and privileges. As a result, there were frequent protests - many of which were written down - by the Gottscheer subjects against the “new rules and new impositions” which the Gottscheers regarded as violations of their “ancient privileges held from time immemorial.” It is from the records of these peasants’ correspondence with the Habsburg archduke and his viceroy in Camiola that we get some of the best documentation of local history of Gottschee that is of genealogical use prior to the establishment of church records. My Dad and I have birthdays less than a week apart, but like most adults, he pays little attention to his; birthdays are for us kids. I was bom on Thanksgiving, a movable feast, and my birthday will seldom fall on the holiday. When it does, the traditional turkey or capon will do double duty as a birthday dinner. But yesterday we ate in the dining room and Mom made my favorite: a big platter of thin, breaded veal, crispy fried potatoes with caramelized onions and cracklings, and a salad of beets. We were supposed to have endive from a cache buried and bleached under the leaves in our garden, but the weather’s been wet. The last of it rotted. The beets, with caraway and slivered onions, marinated in oil, vinegar and garlic, made a fine salad. It went well with the dinner. For dessert, mom made a Poor Man’s Cake. Mom is real good at cakes, but this one’s a fool-proof, Depression recipe. A quick and easy spice-raisin cake, it’s supposed to be moist and heavy. Everyone loves it. We never fool around with candles, but is there something better? As in the past, there were crisp new dollar bills, one for each year. They were fanned out like a hand of cards in front of my plate. Nice, but I can’t spend it. Mom will whisk me over to the Cleveland Trust Bank, and the ten bucks will just be numbers in my savings account, and she keeps the passbook hidden away. I guess Slovenians only make deposits, never withdrawals; they’re re- served for future emergencies. Feast Days are more exciting. Grampa bangs a kettle with a wooden spoon in the morning and the whole family participates. With two Joes, two Mikes, and a Mary, we only celebrate on three days, though there are five of us. Uncle Mike and Grampa celebrate with St. Michael the Archangel, late September, the 29th I think. And Mom, who could have picked any number of Mary dates, is also in September, the 8th. I guess she chose Mary’s birthday because it was close to her own, on the 21st. The Joes, Dad and I, are honored on March 19th. Since we’re not Irish, and hardly know anyone who is, St. Patrick doesn’t steal our thunder. Because the Feast Days have religious meaning, they’re more important to us than birthdays. I’m the only one in the family who gets special treatment for a birthday. That’s because I’m a kid. The four adults might have desert with supper on their birthdays, but otherwise, it’s just another day. On Feast Days, the whole family eats well. I guess that’s why they got that name. Discussing the Various Tax Rates A visitor from Holland was chatting with his American friend and was jokingly explaining about the red, white, and blue in the Netherlands flag. “Our flag symbolizes our taxes,” he said. “We get red when we talk about them, white when we get our tax bill, and blue after we pay them.” “That’s the same with us,” the American said, “only we see stars, too.”_______ This joke came from Philip J. Dodatni viri so nujni za pravočasno izgradnjo avtocestnih odsekov Lendava - Pince, Nova Zrkovska cesta, navezava na Luko Koper L faza, Koper - Izola, Vrba - Peračica, Lešnica - Kronovo in Hajdina - Ptuj. S PESMIJO IN SPOMINI: ob 60-letnici begunstva s pevskim zborom Korotanom v Sloveniji Prof. dr. METOD MILAG Syracuse, New York O o Zvonovi stolnice v Ljubljani so v nedeljo, 3. julija 2005, ob 3.30 popoldne zveneli še prav posebno slovesno. O Zadonele so orgle, zapeli so pevci in pevke Korotana pod vodstvom Janeza Sršena in s pomočjo organista, profesorja Ivana Vombergarja. Mogočno so zvenele že tisočkrat pete, vendar vedno in ponovno opominjajoče in versko vzpodbujajoče cerkvene pesmi kot “Je mrak končan” in “Najvišji Vsemogočni Bog” (i). O Tu smo bili združeni s pesmijo in v molitvi in to na praznik slovesnega ustoličenja novega slovenskega metropolita, nadškofa Alojzija Urana. Brezplačne vstopnice so namreč pošle že veliko prezgodaj. Ivan Vom-bergar. Pesmi so bile sprejete s prisrčnim navdušenjem. To bodo gotovo napravili drugi. 20) Prijatel’s Pharmacy St. Clair & E. 68 St. 361-4212 IZDAJAMO TUDI ZDRAVILA ZA RAČUN POMOČI DRŽAVE OHIO - AID FOR THE AGED PRESCIPTIONS izvajanjem dr. Mesto k obnovljeno, amerikani-zirano. Lažje najdeš McDonalds in KFC kot kako ^sko restavracijo. Bolj ^dne so trgovine evrop-skih verig (Armani, Dior Pd.) poleg ameriških vseh vrst. Petersburg je videti z ladje, ^°bri uri prepelje kanale do Neve, bojno ladje Aurore in Pe-tropavlovske trdnjave do Admiralitete in Zimske palače. Ko večerno sonce obsije palače ob Nevi, spoznaš veličastnost mesta - brez nebotičnikov. Poleti so dnevi dolgi. Vstopnice so navadno poceni, razen če nastopajo tuji umetniki. Ne vem, kako živijo ljudje v mestu s svojimi skromnimi plačami. Opaziš tri stopnje trgovin, hitro ugotoviš, kje kupujejo domačini. Razkošne so trgovine v GUMu ob Rdečem trgu. Barakasto naselje, z zasilnimi stojnicami in vsakovrstnim blagom. Prof. dr. Gospodar in njegovi pomočniki zaslužijo veliko hvalo. Imeli smo 13 tekmovalcev. Trije med njimi so jih bili že kar čez petdeset! Pomerili so se v plavanju, v teku in kolesarjenju. Prvo mesto je zasedel Michael Mejač, drugo Thomas Mejač in tretje sta delila Frank Rozina in Matt Mejač. Vsem so bile podeljene medalje. Tam so ga Nemci zaprli in poslali v Avstrijo. Ničesar ni bilo narejenega brez njegove pomoči in nasveta. Imeli smo srečolov in dražbo z mnogimi lepimi dobitki. The Si ovenia Times (nadaljveanje s str. Pomembna ciljna skupina The Slovenia Times so še izseljenci, predvsem druga in tretja generacija v Kanadi, ZDA in Avstraliji. Dobri prijatelji so odpri svoja srca in žepe. Hvala Vam, g.
