S svojimi prizadevanji spreminjajo sebe, osebnostno rastejo, si zboljšujejo položaj in pozitivno vplivajo na svojo okolico - bližnje, soseščino, skupnost in celotno družbo. The Lifelong Learning Week (LLW) is a promotional event organised by the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education (SIAE), which makes an important contribution to the development and growth of the theory and practice of lifelong learning within our society. The purpose of the promotional, educational and informative and advice based events, happening all over Slovenia this week, is to awaken public awareness of the importance and availability of learning which is aimed at everybody, regardless of the circumstances, stage of life or role they find themselves in. This special week is, for many, a rare or even unique opportunity to present their own creative and educational activities and achievements to their local community and to move out of anonymity to the centre stage of public interest. Their example is an encouragement to many other people to start learning and their self affirmation is yet another reason to continue their own personal development. For this reason people use many of the LLW events as a chance to celebrate and to recognise outstanding educational achievements, successful courses and projects and to give out awards and prizes, to organise presentations of the results of their creative and learning activities. The festival atmosphere of the LLW is also felt in the numerous cultural events that are organised - art exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances, puppet shows and much more. The Lifelong Learning Week is thus truly worthy of being called a Slovenio-wide "Festival of Learning". < / I Awards for outstanding achievements in adult education In 1997, with SIAE backing within the framework of the LLW, for the first time in the history of adult education in Slovenia, awards were presented for outstanding achievement by adults in learning and enriching their own knowledge and for outstanding professional achievements in teaching and enriching the knowledge of others. The purpose of the celebratory event which has become a permanent feature of the LLW is to present, as an example to the general public, individuals, groups and organisations who have put a great deal of effort into their education and learning and as a consequence enjoyed considerable success. With their efforts they have changed themselves, grown personally, improved their status and been a positive influence on their environment - family, neighbourhood, community and society as a whole. Over the last four years a total of 49 awards have been presented (27 for achievements in enriching one's own knowledge and 22 for professional and nih učečih se odraslih ter jih postaviti v središče pozornosti širše javnosti, v spodbudo mnogim oklevajočim. Zadnja leta najdemo med sodelujočimi tudi organizacij iz zamejstva. promo to brini and br promotional success in enriching the knowledge of others). The SIAE wants these awards bring the winners out from the large but anonymous ranks of people in adult education and bring their efforts to the attention of the general public to encourage the large amount of people who are interested but still hesitant about starting to learn again. The SIAE awards for outstanding achievement in the field of adult education are always presented at the opening ceremony of the Lifelong Learning Week. This gives the event an additional sense of celebration and confirms the fact that the real life stories of successful students and award winning educators change the public's attitude to education and learning. How are award winners selected The whole process follows the SIAE's regulations on awards, according to which awards are given in three categories (the first set of awards in 1997 were split into just two categories). There can be up to 5 award winners in each category, meaning of maximum possible total of 15 awards a year: 1. Awards to individuals for outstanding success in learning and enriching their own knowledge; 2. Awards to groups for outstanding success in learning and enriching their own knowledge; 3. Awards to individuals, groups, institutions, companies and local communities for outstanding expert or promotional achievement in enriching the knowledge of others . A special committee appointed by the Institute for Adult Education's board is responsible for inviting applications for the awards and for the organisation of the awards ceremony. The invitation for applications is published in the LLW-Novicke, in daily newspapers and on the SIAE website. The award winners are publicly announced each year and a description of every award winner's achievements features on the SIAE website: www.acs.si/tvu. Lifelong learning - the key to an enjoyable and successful start to the 21st century In a world which every day brings us something new, a world which is experiencing radical change in the forms of communication and the demands of the job markets as well as political and social change, we can only successfully make our way through continual improvement and learning. Education in school has thus become merely the "grand preparation" for a process which lasts a lifetime. Learning belongs to every generation, to people of all walks of life at all levels and it starts as soon as TVU učenja ne uveljavlja le kot nekaj, kar je nujno za ekonomski in družbeni razvoj! Tedne učenja odraslih so pred letom 1995 prirejali v ZDA, Veliki Britaniji, Avstraliji in še kje, leta 1996 seje temu krogu držav pridružila tudi Slovenija s Tednom vseživljenjskega učenja. Vnovič se you are born. Going even further, however, our award winners tell us that things are the opposite of what you would expect: that in fact our children are actually our teachers, that we can learn from handicapped people, many times from abandoned, forgotten traditions, from nature, and at any moment from our own experiences. In reality we should not be surprised that the LLW's circle of friends grows ever wider. In recent years our contributors have even included organisations from abroad. The Lifelong Learning Week does not simply present education as a social and economic obligation! Rather, it presents learning as a value in itself which can be found among the building blocks of the purpose and joy and desire for life. The LLW organisers are thus attempting to prove that the human right to happiness may also be considered within that field of life which belongs to learning. Support for the efforts and goals we have committed ourselves to has also come from abroad. Adult Learners' Weeks had already taken place, before 1995, in the USA, Great Britain, Australia, and a handful of other countries and in 1996 Slovenia joined that group of countries with its first Lifelong Learning Week. We wanted, in choosing a different name, to open up the focus of the event and draw attention to a meaning of learning that was far wider reaching than that used before. This year we are celebrating the fifth Lifelong Learning Week and simultaneously participating for the first time in the International Week Adult Learners' Week under the auspices of UNESCO. In order to celebrate this event appropriately we decided to introduce some people who may truly serve as examples to us on the path of lifelong learning - our award winners. Primarily featured are of course this year's winners but all previous winners also appear with a short description of their achievements. V / NERS OF SIAE AWARDS FOR 2000 AWARDS to individuals for outstanding achievements in learning and enriching their own knowledge Marino Kacic from Ljubljana: How to win when everything has gone wrong Twelve years ago, Marino Kacic's life was turned upside down. Previously he had run his own business dealing with heavy construction machinery. Učila se je skrivnosti animacije in vodenja skupine; veliko je brala, daje obogatila svoje vedenje o kraju, ki ga je predstavljala, pa tudi besedni zaklad in očistila govorico premočnih nareč- occurred in which he had a close call with death. He now had to come to terms with life as a motor impaired and blind person who had to relearn the simplest chores: how to eat, walk, orient himself in a room, and learn to read and write in Braille. The near-death experience shattered Marino's most fundamental values and his view of the world. He realised how much of his life had no real meaning at all. "There was a crack gaping open in my soul. It caused such terrible distress that I kept suppressing the experience," says Marino. He brings to mind the Russian writer Tolstoy, whose encounter with the Void led to him to a religious conversion in order to save his soul. While this is not exactly the path Marino has taken, he also refused to yield to cynicism or depression. He was fortunate enough to be driven on in search of inner peace and the meaning of life. He took up psychology, but it failed to supply him with any answers, and so he continued with yoga. He become a Reiki master and healer, but most of the people he encountered on this new spiritual journey were only immersed deeply in themselves. This was a clue that made him realise that first one should come to maturity oneself. Only a person who has tested all stages of personal growth to his own cost will be able to advise or help others. Maturity is above all about knowing what our abilities are and having the wisdom to distinguish between what one can do and what one should do. From here on, things should be simple. During his rehabilitation in the Centre for Blind and Partially-Sighted in Škofja Loka, Marino enrolled in the College of Social Work, which he completed successfully, even receiving the Student Award for his graduate thesis. During his studies, he attended a number of workshops and training courses on counselling and therapy. He also attended the School of Cybernetic Psychotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine in Zagreb, and an introductory course for professional psychotherapists. Within the Odmev Society, he also received training in individual and group work. When Marino became dependent on other people's help, he refused to accept the idea that his life would be limited to three or four companions, which he saw as a social suicide of sorts. Over the years he trained himself and is now able to move around without being reliant on one particular assistant, recognising and adjusting to different people's body language. He teaches people with unimpaired sight how to do things - which turns on its head the standard notion of blind people and their needs. It is, as he calls it, the "creation of a world in common". Nevenka Jelen from Šempeter: Ideas born on the conveyor belt Coming from a large farming family, where education was considered a privilege of the well-to-do, it was a self evident fact that Nevenka Jelen had to get a job straight after primary school. Her first career opportunity opened up at the nearby Pekel Karst cave. She became a tourist guide, but without appropriate knowledge, instruction or training. At the time, tourism was still in its infancy, which meant she nih posebnosti. Začela je prirejati seminarje, tečaje, delavnice, študijske krožke... vse s področja kmečkega življenja in turizma, v slednjem Neven-ka vidi priložnost zase in za svoj kraj. Članice društva so se učile ekološkega kmetovanja, zelenjavarstva, vzgoje in aranžiranja cvetja, urejanja kmečkega dvorišča, pa tudi peke kruha in peciva, pripravljanja narezkov, slikanja na svilo in steklo... Začele so zbirati pričevanja o življenju prejšnjih generacij. Prvi poskus obiskovanja had to get to grips with everything herself. She taught herself the secrets of animating and guiding groups; she also read widely to expand her vocabulary and her knowledge of the site she was guiding people around and also to make sure she could communicate in standard Slovenian. As the first foreign visitors began arriving, she also took up German and English, paying her own way, to be able to communicate with them. Later on, she had a family and her work in the cave was suddenly no longer compatible with her new daily routine. She got a new job in the Polzela sock manufacturer, where her lack of formal educations only gave her the chance of a job on the conveyor belt. She is still employed there: over two million stockings have passed through her hands. The monotony of her workday gave her plenty of time to think. As ideas came to her she would write them down in a notebook which she kept handy at all times. Again and again she would find herself day-dreaming of getting an education, but the hillside village where she lived offered no such opportunity. Well, if something does not exist, you have to create it yourself - she decided and organised the founding of a local committee of the Village Women Society. She began organising seminars, courses, workshops, study groups and more, all in the area of agriculture and tourism, where Nevenka sees opportunities for both herself and her village. Members of the society took up eco-farming, vegetable-growing, growing and arranging flowers, arranging farmyards, bread and pastry baking, preparing cold-cuts, painting on silk and glass, and other activities. The women started collecting accounts of the life of previous generations. Each year they organise an ethnological event. This year's event was recorded on video, "Kmečko življenje pod lipo" {Farm Life under the Linden Tree) or "Vaško veselje po starem" {Old Fashioned Village Entertainments). The material, diligently edited and prepared by Nevenka Jelen was published last year in a booklet "Ponkovška miza ob petkih in svetkih" {A Ponikva's table - day in, day out). The first page of this greets the reader with an expressive thought: "One's bitter hours should be written in sand, and the good ones engraved in stone." Wisdom that everyone would do well to consider! Borut Holy from Ljubljana: A roundabout way to knowledge and achievements The path that led Borut Holy, the winner of the award for outstanding achievements in enriching his own knowledge, to finally achieve his goals was by no means straight and true - it took many turns and twists that at times seemed to lead nowhere. The truth is that at no stage was Borut ever indifferent to the level of his achievements. He wanted to do the best job possible in everything he was involved in - most of the time even succeeding in doing so. He was a good skiing instructor, a great swimmer, and a member of the Bobri rafting team - a nine-time state champion and a six-time world champions. His only problem was school. In the third year of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science High School, he had simply thrown in the towel and soon found himself working in a warehouse. Služba, vrhunski šport in šola so pomenili hude obremenitve, toda ob koncu četrtega letnika je bilo spričevalo odlično in pot v nadaljnje izobraževanje odprta. Fortunatelyforhimthe company soon discovered his other potentials and found them worth exploiting. He was promoted, but there was a serious handicap blocking his way: his lack of qualifications. He held a responsible job, but every one he worked with was more educated. His first attempt at part-time schooling was a failure. He then passed the entrance examination for the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, but chose the more attractive role of skiing instructor over being a student. He once more determined to put his life in order, and mustered up courage to try school life again. His heartfelt decision meant that he worked hard to achieve good results. There was no more free time for him! His job, career as a professional athlete and his education all placed a great strain on him, but at the end of his fourth year he passed with distinction, with the door to further education wide open. Last year he enrolled in the Faculty of Economics. He gave up sport competitions, and now enjoys his sport as a pastime activity. In the future he intends to remain focused primarily on his studies and his job. Jana Košir from Ljubljana: Where there is a will of steel... The award-winning Jana Košir grew up in an environment that bred criminals. While her two brothers are currently serving prison sentences Jana has managed to find a different path. Alcohol abuse, physical violence and emotional abuse were present in her family on a daily basis. As a little girl she would be teased at school for simply being different. Both her parents were deaf, and she only learned how to speak gradually, on the street, in the kindergarten and of course at school. Her only other assistants in this were books. Her mother worked in a bookbinder's shop, which luckily supplied them with plenty of books, and she is still a passionate reader today. By strengthening her desire to acquire the knowledge they held inside them, those books may even have saved her. Other children would think her odd because she mispronounced many words or could not use them properly; however, her curiosity was beginning bridging the differences with increasing success. Jana had to learn not only "normal" language but also sign language. She became her parents' "right-hand little girl", which demanded from her all the maturity of an adult. An enormous burden for a child, which she found somehow easier to bear on account of her awareness that she was of use to someone. It supplied her with a feeling of self-worth. Nevertheless, the burden was eventually too much for her and she found herself a job before even finishing primary school. But while her thirst for knowledge did not wane, she was also encouraged in her desire to finish school by her colleagues at work. When she plucked up enough courage, help followed. She was supported by Ob delu je obiskovala tečaje angleščine in računalništva. Njeni zapiski in povzetki so bili tako dobri, da so bili nenehno v obtoku, sošolke so jih kar razgrabile. the social work centre, the Adult Education School and others - until finally the first success and rewards arrived. She completed primary school and enrolled in a confectioner programme, which she passed with straight As. She also completed the shop assistant programme at the Agriculture and Food Science High School. She qualified as a shop-assistant and even received the Best Student Award. After work Jana attended part-time English and computer classes. Her enthusiasm was infectious: she inspired three more colleagues from work to continue their education, and even persuaded her brother to enrol in a programme of vocational education. This is, however, not the end of her educational plans: she still has many more for herself in life, and judging by the will of steel that she has so far shown, she is destined to succeed. Alma Plivac from Jesenice: Confidence performs miracles In April of this year, Alma Plivac passed her final examinations at the High School of Economics as the best student in her class. She became an economic and commercial technician, a profession for which she was educated under the adult education programme at the Jesenice Folk High School. This would perhaps not evoke as much admiration as it does if we did not know this was a girl whose serious illness caused her to give up her regular school education in the prime of her teen years, in her second year of her studies in shoemaking. She therefore had to give up the care-free socialising with her friends and the enjoyment of all the other small things that constitute youth. "Alma is a great example of someone who shows us how a strong will and powerful motivation can lead to success," writes Maja R. Hajdic from Jesenice Folk High School. "Her positive experience and selfless help inspired her friends to enrol in our school. Throughout their studies, she stood by their side, lending them notes, studying with them and encouraging them." Alma was drawing from her own experience. The faith placed in her by her family, by the psychologist at the Employment Service, and finally from the school were of great help to her, too. Their confidence in her helped to heal the wounds caused by the belittling attitudes she was faced with at first from doctors who would not believe she was in pain until the disease manifested its full severity, later from the Employment Service - and at times even from her friends and teachers. Throughout her studies, she struggled with the disease. For several years, there were operations and recoveries in health spas, but her drive for success was only strengthened. She even studied in her sickbed, often having to resort to painkillers. She could barely walk and had to be taken to exams by ambulance. Despite all this, she managed to pass all her exams within the normal time! The stronger her pain, the stronger her will to succeed. She even wanted more knowledge than her curriculum Tako kot sami dosežki so torej priznanja vredne tudi Almine osebnostne lastnosti. Druženje ob učenju in delu za skupno dobro jih je povezalo, razvilo občutek solidarnosti pa tudi kreativnosti, saj se med njimi rojevajo nove in nove zamisli ter delovni provided, so she enrolled in a library and borrowed books to read on further than was covered by her study material. Her notes and summaries were so good they were in constant demand among her schoolmates. The same as her achievements, it is also Alma's character that deserves recognition. She never gave up in the hard times but developed and strengthened her perseverance, responsibility, selflessness and solidarity - qualities to be held up as an example to everyone. Awards to groups for outstanding achievement in learning and enriching their own knowledge Predmeja Village Women Interest Group: How to give a welcome The winners of the SIAE Award for outstanding achievements in learning and enriching one's own knowledge, the interest group of the village women from Predmeja, has as many as twenty committed members. It is thanks to them that Predmeja now looks more beautiful than ever before, while its residents and visitors have the opportunity to find out what kinds of foods used to be cooked and eaten in these places, and how people dressed. It all started within the framework of the project on Sustainable Rural Development and Village Renewal, when they were invited to a meeting by the group organiser and ethnologist Irena Velikonja, a local by birth, to present the programme to them. Irena initially brought together eight participants, but after the work had been organised within study groups, twelve more women joined in. They met every two weeks to study, and even more often to work and talk. Together with the ethnologist Dr. Marija Makarovic, the women studied the dress code in the their area in the 19lh and 20th centuries, learned how to prepare individual dishes and about their meaning, held a workshop on landscape arrangement and more. Within the study group they arranged flower beds in the most exposed parts of the village. They participate in the events organised by the local society, and also in the maintenance of the tourist study route that circles the village, incorporating all the local tourist attractions: the group members show visitors lace-making, bakery and cheese-making. In order to be able to communicate with their guests from abroad, they even started learning Italian. Coming together to study or perform community work has established strong bonds between them, developed a sense of solidarity and also boosted their creativity, generating ever new ideas and work plans for the future. Last year they set up a tourist welcome board and arranged wooden flower pots at the entrances to the village, decorated the village chapel and tidied up the area surrounding a village monument and an old vault. This year it is the turn of the nearby marshlands and they also looking forward to another study circle they are planning to establish: "The world at your doorstep". načrti za prihodnost. S pomočjo arhivskih in terenskih posnetkov poustvarja glasbeno izročilo minulih stoletij. Delo skupine temelji na nenehnem lastnem učenju, saj je bilo skrivnosti izdelovanja predklasičnih inštrumentov in igranja nanje moč spoznati in se jih naučiti le pri ljudskih umetnikih. Mira in Matija sta obredla vse slovenske pokrajine in prisluhnila tamkajšnjim pevcem in godcem. Zdaj so vsi trije mojstri na zbirki inštrumentov in zvočil (oprekelj, cimbale, drumlice, citira, brunk ula, The Trutamora Slovenica Ensemble, Ljubljana: Continuing the folk music tradition In the Slovenian Lifelong Learning Week 2000 one of the SIAE awards will be presented to the trio Trutamora Slovenica thus giving them recognition for their twenty-year involvement in research, pedagogical and concert work related to the vocal-instrumental folk music of Slovenia. The trio is being conducted by dr. Mira Omerzel-Terlep, an ethno-musician who is especially devoted to the research of the influence of sound on living beings. Since the very beginning of her reinvigoration of the Slovenian folk music heritage she has been accompanied by her husband Matija Terlep. Twelve years ago the singer and instrumentalist Mojka Zagar joined them. Together they give their share to the ethno-musicological knowledge of Slovenian cultural heritage and identity. The name (trutamora) this group has chosen is, like the music they play, taken from folk traditions. It is the name for a pentagramic star symbol which our ancestors drew on the ends of cradles so that new born babies would be protected against harm (illness, death or evil powers). The group's goal is to pass on original folk music to the youngest generations while they are literally still in their cradles "so that with a knowledge of their own traditions they can save themselves from the torment of a chaotic search for their own identity." The trio has been acting as 'curators of folk music'. Based on archival and field records they have been reinterpreting Slovenian folk music of past centuries. Their work relies on continuous learning related to the making of original folk instruments and playing them - a knowledge which was given over to them by the last still living players. Mira and Matej have visited Slovenian provinces and have listened to their genuine singers and musicians. They collected original, often quite damaged instruments, repaired them or made sure that they were reconstructed authentically. After having gained the skill to perform with these instruments in field all three became masters in playing the dulcimer, the cimbalon, the Jew's harp and the singing saw (see attached photography). However they have not ceased seeking for new techniques and fashions of folk singing -from monophony to five-part singing 'na strko', not to forget the quite unusual guttural singing. With a series of concert commentaries and records the trio wishes to offer the listener a sound passage through the regions of Slovenia, these draughty parts where cultures meet. okarina, bumbas, trstenke, šurla, harfne, violinske in kitorne citre, tomburice ter pojoča žaga, drumlica, buča, lončeni bas, glavnik, bršljanov list...), nenehno pa se uče tudi novih tehnik in ljudskih načinov petja - od enoglasja, do petglasnega petja "na štrko", grlenega petja... Z nizom koncertnih študij in izdanih plošč želijo člani ansambla Trutamora Slovenica ponuditi sodobnim poslušalcem zvočni sprehod skozi raznolikost pokrajin v Sloveniji - deželi na prepihu evropskih kultur. Spremenili so zavest in vrednote krajanov, mladih in starejših. Ustanovili so ekološki krožek; s pomočjo Gasilskega društva in vaščanov so očistili divje odlagališče Petekini, uredili okolico pokopališča, nagrobnik uglednega rojaka Miroslava Vilharja ter okolico šole, postavili zbirališče kosovnih odpadkov... "Let's make our town prettier" - a Study Circle from Knežak: "In the beginning we were laughed at!" Anyone who has visited Knežak during the past few years will have no difficulty understanding why this award was given to the members of the local "Let's make our town prettier" study circle, headed by Marjana Urbančič. It would be hard to miss their achievements as you are welcomed by flowers as soon as you enter the village. The activities organised in Knežak have proven that studying is not limited to a narrow circle of 'chosen ones', but that it spreads from a founding core into its surroundings, gradual-ly winning them over. In this way it transcends the meaning it has for the individual and becomes a social phenomenon or movement. The villagers of Knežak have written their own success story - the success of their village. It was completely restored, and not only that: they managed to change the mentality and values of villagers both young and old. "In the beginning they laughed at us," recall the members of the group. Soon, however, every one was glad to participate in a wide range of activities. The members first got to work in 1995, cleaning up Sela, a famous tectonic fenster (window), a geological feature which is an oasis and a protected area for endangered vegetation and animal species that the villagers had turned into a dumping area. The idea that drinking water was running under a layer of deposited waste became intolerable. Next year Lokev was on the programme, a typical karst basin with a sinkhole surrounded by a wall, which is interesting in ethnographic terms. This could have been the end of the group's activities, had its members not taken to a more demanding study programme. They founded an ecology group and with the help of the Fire Fighter's Society they cleared up the wild Petekini dumpsite. They also tidied the graveyard area, the tombstone of their famous fellow-villager Miroslav Vilhar, and the area around the school setting up a collection point for old furniture and other such household waste material. Their enthusiasm for the appearance of the village was infectious and caught on at school, in other societies, the local Community Centre, the Agricultural Co-operative and in the local and neighbouring municipalities. In order for the work to be continued in the future, the PIŠKOTEK society was founded (PIŠKOTEK - an acronym in the Slovenian language for "Friends of Information, Sports, Culture, Environment, Tourism and Ecology from Knežak"). Folk singers from Zabovci, a section of the Markovci Cultural Society: "Listen to our song" This years' winners of the group awards for outstanding achievements in learning and enriching one's own knowledge include the Folk Singers from Zabovci. The municipality of Markovci is truly grateful to them for their important work over 27 years, which has had particular significance in the last two years thanks to their promotion of their home region and customs both in Slovenia and abroad through their singing. They also participated in a research project, which was particularly demanding forthem, as it required some additional - individual and group - training. We may find it easier to imagine how difficult that might have been if we remember that their average age is 72 years! Until 1973, the singing of local housewives was given little consideration. However, after initial attempts the women realised that this was an opportunity to preserve their folk heritage and hand it down to the younger generations. Someone with the understanding for this noble ambition and capable of directing itwasTreza Maroh. Soon, the villagers could no longer imagine an important event without their singers. They joined the Anton Jože Strafela Markovci Cultural Society and participated in the music activities at the Markovci Primary School. They instilled an enthusiasm for folk songs across several generations of younger people and participated in all the culture festivals and important events: the Dediščina korantove dežele (Kurant Festival), Tukaj smo doma (This is our Home), Od kolin do mesa iz tunke {Koline and tunka - a festival of local food), Tak smo se ženili (Weddings in the olden days), Pri nas bomo pa zibali (We Are Expecting a Baby), and The Municipality of Markovci - That's Us. They faced the most demanding educational task last year, when they participated in a research project for the Municipality of Markovci. They recorded the "Songs from the land of onion-growers", which called for a great deal of sacrifice and additional rehearsals, as they had to polish up on their pronunciation and singing accuracy - but they made it! Not only did they help to preserve a record of local cultural heritage, they also reached the goal they had set for themselves many years ago: the songs that are presented in the song-book and on tape are already becoming a part of the repertoire for many young singers in school vocal choirs. AWARDS to individuals, groups, society, establishment, company or local community for outstanding professional or promotional achievements in enriching the knowledge of others Štefan Huzjan, Grosuplje: A "distance learning mentor" Štefan Huzjan is the winner of an award for his selfless activity over many years in the area of promoting and organising various forms of lifelong and adult education. He is a man who rejoices at every new growth, especially when it bears rich fruit among his compatriots, to whom he has devoted the past few years of his work. Štefan Huzjan, a lecturer in sociology, innovator, promoter and head of a number of ecological, cultural and education projects (in particular a range of study circles, which include: Oil Museum, Ecotourism, Permaculture, Heating with solar power, Exploring cyclist paths) comes from the bilingual town of Dobrovnik. In Pomurje he has headed international ecological research camps; he was also the organiser of the Lifelong Learning Week in Dobrovnik, Kobilje and Lendava, and in Grosuplje, where he currently lives. People from the economically underdeveloped north-eastern part of our country are particularly grateful to him, since he not only continues to promote their enterprising spirit and self-development (he organised special workshops for the development of entrepreneurial ideas suitable for the local environment), but he also encourages them to open up doors to the world. In order to enable anyone interested to learn how to communicate via state-of-the-art communication technology, and in order for this idea of openness to develop among young people, he took on the task of establishing a network of telehouses (education and information centres which provide access to computers, e-mail and the internet, and which establish and mediate various local media). The telehouse is founded in part by municipalities and in part by the EU via PHARE Credo programme. The first telehouses intended for residents of the municipality of all generations was opened in Kobilje and in Dobrovnik, while Huzjan's entire plan envisages six telehouses in six municipalities, of which two are located in neighbouring Hungary. His achievements are proof that even less educated and insecure people from the hitherto peripheral regions can take on an important role in development. Prepričana je, da dajejo oddaji širino in odmevnost ne le ustvarjalci, temveč tudi Milic» Prešeren from Ljubljano: Bring together learning and enjoyment In Slovenia, where school has traditionally evoked negative connotations, something has finally been set in motion! Connections that until recently were almost inconceivable have been established in the minds of individuals - a link between learning and enjoyment, for instance. Thanks to the journalist Milica Prešeren, these new concepts have now found a home within the hub of Slovenian media: Television Slovenia. The fresh new ideas of the monthly TV show Modro (Wise), which Milica Prešeren edits and hosts, has earned her this years' SIAE Award for outstanding achievements in the promotion of lifelong learning. Every first Friday of the month, viewers are treated to a wealth of different programme sections on educational possibilities for all generations, from pre-school children to people in the third age. The desire of the award-winning Milica Prešeren was to create a show that would be different, and she is grateful to all who have made this possible and extended their help, in particular to the educational programme editor, Barbara Volčič Lombergar, and also to her own crew. Every school can be interesting and attractive - if we know how to present it that way, says Milica Prešeren. The main purpose of her shows is to stimulate people's desire for learning. She wants to persuade the viewer that learning is enjoyable and that it can even be fun. Particular attention is placed on the sharing of knowledge between generations: not only do children learn from their parents, teachers and other adults - adults can learn from children, too! Within the Slovenian environment it is particularly significant that the show acquaints viewers of all age with the work of education institutions by breaking down stereotypes and dispelling the all-too-common fear of these institutions. Milica insists that the show's young crew should focus on themes that are close to them. We do the best jobs, she is convinced, when we draw from ourselves. As author of the show she tackles problems that require a great amount of sensitivity and empathy. People personally involved in the topic of the show are always given a voice, since it is not its purpose to merely broadcast information but also to present the real-life circumstances in which learning and education take place. With the title of the show, its author wanted to stress her finding that learning is an activity that is present throughout our lives. At any moment or in any given circumstances, no matter how difficult these may be, a grain of wisdom is there -we only need to seek it out and recognise it. Milica Prešeren firmly believes that the show is wide-ranging and important not only because of its creators, but also thanks to all those who devote their time to it: the viewers. vsi, ki ji namenjajo svoj čas, se pravi tudi gledalci. RIC Novo Mesto: Learning as a personal value This year's award-winners include a public institute for adult education: the Novo Mesto Development and Education Centre (RIC). The centre is headed by Vesna Dular, a director fervently devoted to new education possibilities and opportunities. In the relatively short time span of six years, RIC developed under her guidance into an established education centre, which provides education and adult vocational training of different programmes and levels. It has also become the main research and development centre in the municipality and the entire region, and a provider of adult education with a rich choice of programmes. There are courses in personal and professional development and also creative leisure activities. The RIC Novo Mesto cannot pride itself on a long tradition, but it can claim that enthusiasm is still very strong among its employees. Their desire is to promote adult education on the widest scale possible, in diverse forms custom-made for the people who want to take. Believing that man is by nature a curious and creative being, the centre endeavours to show people how much joy learning can bring into one's life, even if we tend to describe this joy in other words. This new approach places an emphasis on lifelong learning: the RIC began organising study circles, established a Learning Exchange and the Edus Self- Learning Centre, and designed a large-scale programme, the Lifelong Learning Week. It organises free workshops on learning, time management and building a positive self-image, which are intended in particular for people with learning difficulties; it also provides an opportunity for study placements to teachers training as adult educators. The RIC staff know that old habits die hard and that it takes several generations before new ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour take root in the consciousness of people. For this reason they also focus on running groups, informing and consultation. They are present in the local and regional press and on regional radio and TV programmes. Now they also have a new bimonthly publication NoRICe, concentrating on the popularisation of knowledge and providing information on new learning and educational opportunities, which they send to as many as 3000 individuals and institutions. Their desire is to inspire everybody so that learning would become of personal value to all. Damijan Kljajič from Velenje: Cultural heritage treasures for all Since 1987 Damijan Kljajič has been working in the Velenje Museum as a curator in charge of pedagogical activities and curator of recent history, an area in which he also focuses as a writer. In the area of museology he is involved with displays placed with regard for their environmental context and the arrangement of a recent history collection on the Šaleška Dolina Valley, while in his educational work he is devoted to adult education. Stanko Nikolič, animator, strateg in povezovalec želja, načrtov, projektov in sanj tamkajšnjega prebivalstva. Sodelovali so A few years ago he enrolled in the Velenje University of the Third Age, which gained in Damijan a designer and organiser of large-scale programmes. As a mentor of the history group, he surprises people every year with a new project that is guaranteed to leave a deep impact. Currently, members of his group are preparing a 'memory book'. For a number of years they have also been involved in the successful renovation of the Kavčnik household area in Zavodnje and they are acquainting themselves with Slovenian cultural and natural monuments (every member prepares a presentation of a selected monument, person, place or a region by using professional resources). They also cooperate successfully with the Velenje Museum by collecting exhibits, and organising events and celebrations. Independently or together with group members, Damijan Kljajič prepared several radio and television shows on the elderly and their life stories. He also invested a great amount of work in the education of adults who come from care and working centres for people with impaired physical or mental dev elopment. Last year the Velenje Museum prepared a quiz on museums for these people, while this year contestants from all over Slovenia tried their luck with a quiz about castles. Under Kljajic's guidance, group members also collect historical testimonies, and record events and customs in the Šaleška Dolina Valley from between both world wars and up to the beginning of 1950s. The compiled material is returned to the Valley in the form of essays, exhibits, revived customs (known as jajčerija, čajanka or kresni večer, which is a kind of bonfire night), in this way connecting the young generation with their roots, and enriching the tourist and cultural attractions of Šaleška Dolina. The Kostel Tourist and Sports Society: Winter University The Kostel Tourist and Sports Society (TSS), which unites all the creative forces of the young municipality of Kostel, has made outstanding achievements in the area of promotion of lifelong learning. Since its establishment in 1991, education has been one of the Society's priorities. At the heart of these activities is the president of the Society, Dr Stanko Nikolič, an organiser, strategist and a coordinator of the desires, plans, projects and dreams of the local population. Until recently, the Kostel region was a neglected, closed area. Residents therefore had to tackle tasks that do not strictly belong within the narrow frame of tourism. They assisted in the reconstruction and asphalt paving of roads, construction of the water supply network, telephone network, collecting and depositing of waste, electrification, outdoor lighting and other. Previously the region had been unfamiliar with items that most areas of civilisation take for granted. In 1998, the Society's efforts towards establishing a normal life for the people from Kostel contributed to the forming of an independent municipality with a population of 700 residents. pri obnovi in asfaltiranju cest, napeljavi vodovodov in telefonskega omrežja, zbiranju in odvozu smeti, elektrifikaciji, javni razsvetljavi in podobnem. Prej namreč teh "civilizacijskih samoumevnosti" tu ni bilo. Prednost dajejo uporabnemu znanju, na primer vzgoji sadnega drevja in zdravilnih zelišč, urejanju vrtov, biološkemu kmetovanju, zdravi prehrani, učinkoviti rabi energije in obnovljivim virom energije, poslovnim priložnostim turizma, urejanju okolja, skrbi za pitno in tekočo vodo, pridobitvi blagovne znamke, mednarodnemu sodelovanju in trajnostnemu razvoju podeželja. Pripravili so več prospektov, vodnikov, razglednic, knjig, spominkov in drugega promocijskega gradiva. TVU 2000 so počastili z izdajo knjige o kostelških jedeh, običajih in šalah. Tako prispevajo k ohranjanju izročila in dvigu samozavesti nekdaj "pozabljenih" prebivalcev občine Kostel. The activities of the Society include the areas of sports and recreation, celebrations and customs, lifelong learning, tourist promotion, public utility infrastructure, international cooperation, designing development programmes, organising lectures, seminars, international volunteer work camps, research camps and various courses. In the countryside, wintertime is traditionally a time for studying, and during this time of year a range of activities were born spontaneously. The Society become a "Winter University of Kostel" of sorts prioritising practical knowledge, such as cultivating fruit trees and medicinal herbs, arranging gardens, bio-farming, healthy nutrition, the efficient use of renewable resources of energy, tourist-related business opportunities, environmental development, provision of running water for human consumption, acquisition of a trademark, international cooperation and sustainable development. They also prepared a number of tourist brochures, tourist guides, postcards, books, souvenirs and other promotion material. They also endeavoured to promote local delicacies. Their way of celebrating the Lifelong Learning Week 2000 was to issue a book on Kostel dishes, customs and - jokes. That is their contribution to the preservation of heritage, boosting the self-esteem of the once 'forgotten' residents of the Municipality of Kostel. SLOVENIAN INSTITUTE FOR ADULT EDUCATION AWARDS FROM 1997 TO 1999 Awards for 1997 The 1997 Lifelong Learning Week saw fifteen SIAE (Slovenian Institute for Adult Education) awards being presented to individuals and groups involved in education who have made exceptional efforts and sacrificed a great deal, as well as to individuals, groups and organisations who, professionally or voluntarily, created new educational opportunities, thereby promoting the learning of others. Awards for outstanding success in learning and enriching their own knowledge Robert Muhič, Črnomelj: A better job through continuing education Robert Muhič was nominated for the award by the Education and Culture Institute of Črnomelj. Since 1989, he has completed primary school for adults (he had until then been employed as a saw operator) and vocational training as a salesman. He changed his job and with the support of his family continued his education and in 1997 became a sales technician. He is already considering continuing his education at a business college. He wants to use his continuing education to get a better job where he will be able to use the knowledge he has gained. Robert is justifiably proud of his educational achievements! Marija Debelak, Ljubljana: Learning as a way of life Following a serious accident when she had to re-learn everything from scratch, even reading and writing, Marija Debelak from Ljubljana joined a study group at the University of the Third Age. Learning foreign languages offered her new opportunities to express herself. She began to write articles and translate texts from French. The friendship she struck up with Ana Mlakar led to two anthologies which Marija translated into French. Marija's learning experiences have given her a completely new start in life, uncovering her creative abilities, so it is no surprise that free and open learning has become her second nature. Temeljni cilji njihovega dela so nenehno učenje o zgodovini in kulturi njihovega kraja in okolice, ozaveščanje ljudi o pomenu ohranjanja kulturne dediščine ter ustanovitev muzeja v Ilirski Bistrici. The Keramika group from Ljubljana: It's never too late to discover creativity The Keramika (ceramics) group had, by 1997, already been operating for three years under the guidance of Lučka Šičarov-Dražumeric at the University of the Third Age in Ljubljana. Regular meetings have helped group members to gain the required skills and knowledge to express themselves in clay and begin to present their finished pieces to the public. They have exhibited at the Prežihov Voranc Library, the Loto gallery and the Faculty of economics. Their works express a playful creativity and a readiness to research and learn. Their work has inspired others with the message that it's never too late to find yourself and discover creativity. The Embroidery Group from Slovenska Bistrica: An educational plan for self-employment The Embroidery Group from Slovenska Bistrica is a group of four ambitious women (Štefka Perko, Elica Skrbenjek, Sabina Trunkl and Božena Lunežnik-Pintarič) who discovered after an initial course at the Folk High School that they could use this knowledge to prepare a self-employment plan. Through the National Employment Organisation, the group began to participate in the Public Works programme, receiving further education and training. They also launched themselves into research work, studying patterns and embroidery in the wider Pohorje area. The quality of their products is testified to by the Expert Committee of the Chamber of Small Business of Slovenia which classified their products as home-made Slovenian handicrafts. The Museum Study Circle from Ilirska Bistrica: From studying history and culture to establishing a museum Over fouryears the Museum Study Circle from Ilirska Bistrica carefully collected and documented numerous pieces of material evidence of the rich cultural heritage of the area and described and revived old and nearly forgotten customs. The basic goals and guidelines of their work were continuous learning about the history and culture of their area, informing people of the importance of the rich cultural heritage and the establishment of a museum in Ilirska Bistrica. They have collaborated with the Ilirska Bistrica Local History Society and the Regional Museum of Koper in order to find about the correct handling and archiving Skupina "Skala" iz Ljubljane: Znanje in strokovna pomoč na ulici Skupina Skala iz Ljubljane je skupina za preventivno delo z mladostniki in mlajšimi odraslimi. They have prepared exhibitions (The "Vizita" then and now, Postcards views of our region, Transport in Bistrica) and revived traditional customs (such as the "vizita" celebration to mark military service, blessing horses on Štefanovo; St.Nicolas' Day celebrations). They also organise lectures on important events and design special postmarks and postcards. The Skala group from Ljubljana: Knowledge and expert help on the street The Skala group from Ljubljana is a group involved in preventive work with young people and young adults. It brings together more than 30 volunteers. They developed an extensive education programme which adds to their knowledge through Slovenian experts and experience from abroad. They have contributed to street work in Slovenia with a method that stresses personal contact and monitoring, and advice and education. To get as close as possible to young people, they prepared a specially adapted bus as a travelling street workshop and advice centre, which they called the Bus veselja (Happy Bus). They carried out research in several areas around Ljubljana and Domžale and carried out a range of projects: The Tenth Hour, Spring in Jarše, Autumn in Fužine, Let's talk about it. Most of all they have helped individual young people, who with their help have left the streets and looked for work or returned to education. Radeče Re-education Centre: Implementing a new programme of work with young people The management of the Radeče Re-education Centre are aware that the continuous individual or group professional education and personal improvement of people working in such a sensitive area as the rehabilitation of young offenders is extremely important for the success of the institution. Through continuous professional training, the staff of the Radeče Re-education Centre have within a few years replaced a repressive rehabilitation regime with a form of help which allows each inmate to choose their own interests and encourages their development and personal growth. Borza znanja s svojimi dejavnostmi, prireditvami in predstavitvami prerašča te- n Awards for professional achievement in the affirmation of learning and enriching the knowledge of others The Adult Education Summer School: An example of good practice in adult education In 1997 the Adult Education Summer School, underthe leadership of Dr. Ana Krajnc, had already been bringing together adult educators from all over Slovenia for three years. Direct links to adult education practice in Ajdovščina is the innovation which distinguishes the Adult Education Summer School as an example of good practice in adult education. New adult education institutes in Ajdovščina have increased the cultural and educational opportunities of the town in general. Using interactive education methods, the School has become a superb opportunity for further education for adult educators. The Centre for Education at the Faculty of Arts: Making better teachers The Centre for Education at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana has been operating for seventeen years. The need for better quality teacher training has led to a range of educational programmes in which the experiences of individual participants are combined with theoretical findings on the effectiveness of learning and teaching. The group has made an important contribution to the development of experts in different fields. They have become better teachers, open to creative learning communication. They have been trained in the use of active experience methods in higher education. They have developed and run courses on higher education "How to give proper lectures", organised a summer school on the development of university teaching and prepared a range of seminars on topics such as student-tutors and group studying in higher education. In this way the original remit of the project has been outgrown and the Society for Didactics in Higher Education has been founded, led by Dr. Barica Marentič-Požarnik. The Learning Exchange in Ljubljana: The knowledge is on'Change! The Learning Exchange in Ljubljana is an institution intended to bring together people who wish to learn something and those who would like to pass on their knowledge or message to others. The Oton Zupančič Library provided the premises and a great deal of encouragement and its innovative nature, and numerous activities, events and presentations saw the Exchange grow into a fully-fledged information centre. The success of this project encouraged the development of other meljno naravo informacijskega središča. Doslej so pripravili vrsto delavnic, predavanj, študijskih krožkov, delovnih akcij, izobraževanj in strokovnih obiskov. P learning exchanges in Slovenia so that by 2000 there were already seven learning exchanges all working together across the country. Together, they are greatly contributing to the expansion of the movement for a learning society. Vitra from Cerknica: Creating opportunities for rural development Vitra, the Centre for Balanced Development in Cerknica, is a non-governmental non-profit institute established to revive rural areas in the hilly regions of Notranjska and Dolenjska. Their mission is to encourage, educate and attract locals towards development opportunities. The opportunities are there, but they must be discovered and developed. They prepared numerous workshops, talks, study circles and visits. By 1997 they have already organised nine international voluntary work camps, which brought locals together and carried the reputation of the sights of Notranjska around the world. They also publish a newsletter "VITR(in)A" to promote interaction and awareness of development opportunities. The Technology Training Centre, Ljubljana: Time for new knowledge and quality The Technology Training Centre at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia is a central educational institution whose activities have made exceptional contributions to the development of education and the creation of educational opportunities. As a group of experts, they have made important contributions to the place that professional knowledge and motivation for learning have both gained within Slovenian companies, which in today's climate can no longer hope to achieve market efficiency or competitive success without investment in education. Only through education will they open the door to greater innovation, productivity, commercial excellence and quality. The Municipality of Ormož: A learning community The Municipality of Ormož is a local community well aware of the challenges of the 21st century and of the modern demand for knowledge, since in terms of access to resources for adult education it is the equal of any major town in Slovenia. The people of Ormož were among the first in Slovenia to enjoy educational opportunities using the modern forms and methods developed by the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education such as study circles, literacy programmes and self-learning centres. In addition to programmes providing formal education, the community can use these structures to gain general knowledge, which makes an essential contribution to the personal Krajevna skupnost Drežnica: Priložnost v turizmu Prebivalci Krajevne skupnosti Drežnica, v katero poleg Drežnice spadajo še okoliške vasi Ravne, Koseč, Jezerca in Magozd, so se ozirali za možnostmi razvoja in ugotovili, da so pravšnjo priložnost zase našli v turizmu. V času, ko se uspešnost občinskega vodstva marsikje meri s kilometri asfalta, je naložba v neformalno, svobodno izobraževalno dejavnost, ki omogoča predvsem osebno zadovoljstvo ob vstopanju v skrivnosti sveta ali ob posredovanju lastnega znanja drugim, pravzaprav pogumno dejanje. development of each individual and of the community in which they live. Dreznica Local Community: Dreznica, of course I know you! The residents of the Dreznica Local Community, which includes the villages of Ravne, Kosec, Jezerca and Magozd, looked into development opportunities and decided theirs lay in tourism, a choice which required willpower, suitable opportunities and knowledge. Study circles, as a new form of adult education, allowed them to combine the knowledge they already had and at the same time to gain more. The success of the study circle led to an overall education project which covers training of the whole village for work in tourism. f They taught themselves foreign languages, organised tourist farms and homemade local delicacies, they got to know the connections between natural and cultural heritage and trained themselves to act as tourist guides and to plan a comprehensive tourist service. Today, Dreznica is well-known on the tourist map of Slovenia. The villagers have already received many awards for quality, as well as for people- and environment-friendly tourist development. The Town of Slovenj Grodec: Mayor and educators hand in hand The Town of Slovenj Gradec develops and supports numerous educational activities for people of all ages, whether it is formal education or simply the expansion of the education culture. It is no coincidence that the first Learning Exchange in Slovenia to be fully funded by a municipality began operating this year in Slovenj Gradec. At a time when the success of municipal leadership is in many places measured in terms of kilometres of new road, investment in an activity which does not provide formal knowledge, but which does provide satisfaction to everybody who has retained a curiosity for the many secrets of the world and to those who wish to share their knowledge with others, is a brave act. nanjo ACS za leto 1998 Andragoški center Slovenije je leta 1998 podelil devet priznanj za izjemne osebne učne uspehe pa tudi za strokovne ali promocijske dosežke pri bogatitvi znanja drugih. Awards for 1998 Once again this year, the Slovenian Institute for Adult Education used the opportunity of the Lifelong Learning Week to present awards for exceptional learning success and professional or promotional achievements in enriching the knowledge of others. This year there were nine recipients: individuals, groups and organisations which stand out in terms of their learning efforts, the positive changes achieved with the help of education in themselves or in their environment, and the obstacles which they have had to overcome in learning and education. Awards to individuals for exceptional learning success and increasing their own knowledge Jožic» Korenjak from Kromberk: Through learning to creative work Jožica Korenjak could have stayed a worker and housewife, but her desire for knowledge and creativity drew her to study representative art with well-know Slovenian sculptors and painters, and to attend courses in clay modelling, various methods for firing clay, and later in restoration. She herself has arranged courses in clay modelling, showing herself to be an exceptional teacher. Alenka Golob, Ljubljana: To maintain human dignity Alenka Golob learns for herself, but works for others: she runs Škofljica House for people with moderate, serious and severe mental development problems. She is guided by the desire to maintain human dignity and the feeling of well-being among the mentally handicapped. As a carer, she graduated in special education before continuing with further education, including courses abroad. She designed the teaching plan for the Drama subject, which is now a constituent part of the training for carers. Obiskujejo strokovne tečaje in prirejajo razstave. Awards to groups for exceptional learning success and increasing their own knowledge The project council for the training programme, Ljubljana: Through a lot of work to success The project council for the training programme for guardian-carers consisted of staff of Dolfka Boštjančič Draga Centre and the Secondary Education School and Grammar School in Ljubljana. They carried out extensive preparatory work, prepared a teaching plan, sought suitable premises and equipment, and teachers for individual subjects, and prepared everything needed to certify the programme with professional bodies. They ran the tenders for individual training groups and regularly evaluated and updated the programmes. POC Cultural, Artistic and Educational Society from Ajdovščina: They became more self-confident Members of the POC Cultural, Artistic and Educational Society from Ajdovščina invested a great deal of work and time in spiritual enrichment and the development of artistic creativity. They discovered an ability to express themselves in an alternative, more creative way. They became braver and more self-confident, and realised that there is something other than job, family and home which is only theirs. The Arts Circle from Velenje: They enriched their lives The members of the Arts Circle from Velenje systematically obtain theoretical and practical knowledge on artistic techniques. They attend professional courses and arrange exhibitions. Over the years, they have honed their aesthetic senses and developed personally. Some say that working in the circle has helped them to live. Z vsem svojim delovanjem si prizadeva ohranjati in širiti zavest o pomenu kulture Slovenske Istre. Awards to individual, groups, societies, institutions, companies or local communities for exceptional professional and promotional achievements in enriching the knowledge of others The ELES Educational Centre, Ljubljana: To increase educational level of employees The ELES Educational Centre sees its mission as ensuring quality transfer and exchange of knowledge, and its effective use in practice. Leda Dobrinja from Lopar at Marezige: Her house is wide open Leda Dobrinja is devoted to preserving and disseminating the culture of Slovenian Istria, and her house is open to study circles, creators and researchers of Istrian life. Alzbeta Cergol from Maribor: Teaching adults demands a different approach Alzbeta Cergol introduced new techniques to involve adults in education which goes beyond the traditional methods of education and which is closer to adult participants. Her leadership is characterised by the specific experiences of individual participants in education. E Awards for 1999 SIAE awards to individuals for exceptional learning success and increasing their own knowledge Jožic» Back from Radovljica: Something drew her... After divorcing her husband, Jožica Back was left on her own with her daughter: no apartment, no job, and unqualified. She had had completed six years of primary school. One day she was passing the Folk High School in Radovljica and in her own words, something drew her to go inside. According to the directress of the Folk High School, she was an example to other students because of her strong motivation. She passed all her examinations early, although in all the years she did not get a single day off work for her education. She completed primary school and vocational school, and is now considering going for a secondary education. The feeling that she knows something gives her self-confidence. Alongside her journalism work, she has also conducted important ethnological research. Benjamin Šmid from Spodnje Gorje near Bled: When you realise your inner wealth Benjamin Šmid is a final year masters' degree student at the Faculty of Social Sciences and completing a postgraduate course in business process management, and the list of educational programmes and training courses he has completed while a student is a long one. The references written for him by professors and experts both in Slovenia and abroad mention his flexibility, his adaptability to change, and the attention he pays to details to ensure that the seminars, which he himself provides, run smoothly. They describe him as a highly motivated, dedicated individual, able to deal with other people and with a great interest in the needs of clients. His work particularly reflects self-initiative, imagination, insight and the ability to establish direct and honest relations. SIAE awards to groups for exceptional learning success and increasing their own knowledge Žarek Photography Club from Sežana: Through photography to the knowledge of oneself The group has been together for six years, and in that time they have taken part in numerous exhibitions, competitions, lectures, courses and ad hoc events. Alongside all their achievements in learning and work, they have obtained and developed a new relationship towards themselves and towards photography, towards nature, samih sebe in svojega konjička - fotografije, pa tudi do narave, okolja, kraške arhitekture in čudovitega fenomena - svetlobe, ki jim omogoča, da se gibljejo v polju lepote. V kratkem času so veliko naredile. Pozimi organizirajo strokovna predavanja in delavnice s področja peke in pekovskih izdelkov. Karst architecture and light. Members of the club, once a study circle, have attracted many people to get involved, and their work is highly regarded in both their immediate and their wider environment. Most importantly, it is down to them that photography has begun to be appreciated as an art form in the Sežana area. Group of Study Circle Mentors at the Secondary Trade School in Ljubljana: Joy in one's heart The SIAE award was won by a group consisting of mentor Agata Freyer Majaron, who runs a circle on Plečnik's heritage, mentor Jirži Kočica, who runs a circle on the fine arts, and Zlatka Kump, leader of circles operating at the school. Circles take place independently of each other, but the mentors cooperate closely; this cooperation has produced many ideas which they jointly implement. The mentors say that it is a completely different form of learning: with enthusiasm, with "joy in their hearts", by imbibing knowledge which someone, be they a tutor or a member of the circle, passes on to the rest. The boundaries between teacher and taught are thus removed, and they learn from each other. Project Group for Bakery from Škofja Loka: They became a good working team Loka hills, on the economics of work and on additional activities, among other themes. They go on professional excursions to farms, and they learn exclusively for their own interest with the aim of improving the quality of their work. Of the fourteen farm women active in the project group for bakery, seven will this year register for the activity. They have achieved much in a short time. In winter time, they organise expert talks and workshops in the area of baking and baking products. They have taken part in baking workshops, and under the aegis of the Association of Rural Women, they have attended cookery courses. SIAE awards to individuals, groups, institutions, companies and local communities for exceptional professional or promotional achievements in improving the knowledge of others Anica Uranjek from Medvode: With a confidence in people Anica Uranjek is a clinical psychologist employed until the start of last year full time at the Advisory Centre for Children, Young People and Parents in Ljubljana. Nothing much changed when she retired: she still runs training courses and continues to provide advisory work. The only difference, she says, is that she now has greater freedom. She also played an important role as a mentor to staff in the Advisory Centre, who turned to her for professional and human help. She knew how to listen, how to familiarise herself with the problems and how to be actively involved in their resolution. All this with the confidence that people will be able to resolve their problems. St Francis The Salesian Institute For Educational And Cultural Activities from Zelimlje: Working for others The institute is primarily a school institution intended for the education of young people, but it brings together under one roof a variety of activities which differ in terms of both content and organisation. In addition to formal educational programmes, it also prepares other educational programmes and activities: sports, culture, education etc. These are aimed at young people and teachers, as well as parents and other children and adults from the area in which the school operates. They thus organise youth camps, debating circles and study visits. They establish ties with similar institutions at home and abroad, organising family training programmes, provide advice for parents, run a music school and theatre workshops, and train animators to run social, cultural and sporting activities. The Zelimlje institute has thus grown from a typical school institution into a learning-educational, cultural and social centre for its town and region. The Town Council of Murska Sobota Municipality: Many plans The town council of Murska Sobota is aware that the quality of life can also be measured through the opportunities to acquire diverse forms of knowledge. The educational structure of the population of the municipality is distinctly unfavourable. More than 50 percent of job seekers have only completed primary school. Of course the municipality lies in an area with a strong agricultural hinterland. Lower industrial output also means fewer opportunities to raise the educational level: people stayed at home and did not receive education. In the words of Mayor Anton Slavica, the municipality is aware of this fact and because they know that it cannot be changed rapidly, they are striving for long-term guidelines to improve the situation. National Project Unit for Distance Learning, Faculty of Economics from Ljubljana: Learning in the home The Faculty of Economics began distance learning study programmes in 1995 at the business college; they now have several thousand students studying in this way. Distance learning has been shown to be very suitable and has caught on in Slovenia. During the preparatory phase they followed the examples of Open Universities around the world (United Kingdom and the Netherlands), but in the words of Dr Lea Bregar, who initiated and for a long time ran the project, distance learning operates in a considerably different environment and under different educational systems. This meant that fundamental adaptations were required deriving from experience of part-time study. They prepared special learning materials, introduced innovations into the education system-tutors-and conducted a range of promotional activities. Krka, Novo Mesto, Education Centre: Communication is the key For a long time, staff of Krka of Novo Mesto have needed no encouragement to participate in education. The interest in seminars and other forms of education is such that they cannot meet the demands of all employees in the Education Centre. Many of them want to study full-time - over eighty employees are presently in postgraduate education. The educational structure of Krka is far above the Slovenian average. In the words of Alenka Pucko, head of the centre, the best motivation for learning is the fellow worker leaving a seminar with enthusiasm. She says that their employees are becoming demanding participants in education, but are nonetheless mostly satisfied with the education organised by the company, either internally or externally.
