Drago Gačnik, sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Tel.: 905-561-5971 Fax: 905-561-5109 E-mail gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca Web page www.carantha.com Hall rentals Cell: 905-518-6159 E-mail hallrental@ stgregoryhamilton.ca Rečeno je bilo ... Zato človek z njimi ne more prosto razpolagati. »V naši moči je, da smo že sedaj v nebesih pri Bogu: če ljubimo, kakor ljubi on, če pomagamo, kakor pomaga on, če dajemo, kakor daje on, če služimo, kakor služi on, če rešujemo, kakor rešuje on« (Mati Terezija). 70 | VESTNIK 2017 Slovensko društvo sv. Eng., Oct. 22,2011 at Scholarship Banquet Dober vecer! Good Evening! In July 1960 a Slovenian priest, Father Tomc arrived in Hamilton to organize a new Slovenian parish and community center Due to excellent planning on my part, I also entered the world and arrived in Hamilton about that same time - and became the first baptized member of what would become the Slovenian parish of St. Gregory the Great. Ever since that time, it has been my privilege and joy to have been actively involved in the life of the Slovenian community in Hamilton. I have also been fortunate to have travelled to Slovenia eight times as well as too many other parts of Europe, United States and Canada. Based on my experiences I wish to relate to you my pride and hopes for our Slovenian community. I am proud of the Slovenian language -particularly its endurance against seemingly overwhelming odds. In the library in Munich Germany there are 4.5 old pages known as the Freising document. On this paper is the oldest known written piece of any Slavic language written in modern Latin script - it is in Slovenian and it dates to about the year 972 AD. Now consider the oldest written document in Italian dates from that same time 74 | VESTNIK 2017 period and the oldest English document dates from only about 300 years earlier Isn't it amazing that a small nation like Slovenia has a language and literary history as old as much larger nations that the language has survived for over 1100 years despite the fact that Slovenians only recently achieved independence as a nation. It is my hope - that the uniqueness of this language will continue to be valued and that parents and children will take advantage of the Slovenian School in Hamilton. It likely an unrealistic goal to expect future generations in Hamilton to become fluent in the language. But bringing the young people together to learn some language, history, geography and culture and to become friends is critical to them identifying themselves as part of the Slovenian community. The social experience is as important as language proficiency in order to instill an identity as members of the Slovenian community in Hamilton. I am proud of the long democratic tradition of Slovenians. Despite their long subjugation under other nations, this democratic tradition was recognized and considered noteworthy many, many years ago. The French philosopher/historian Jean Bodin documented the ceremony of the installation of the Dukes of Carinthia (Koroška Region) in a book he wrote in the 1500's. This formal ceremony was performed on a regular basis between the years 870 AD and 1412 and the site is preserved to this date. This ceremony was the means by which the ruler, a Duke in those feudal times, received his power directly from the people and promised to rule them justly and fairly. This concept is the modern basis of the social contract and democratic elections. Bodin's book found its way into the library of American Thomas Jefferson where the ceremony was highlighted in the margin by Thomas Jefferson's initials. Thomas Jefferson went on to write the American Declaration of Independence and serve as America's third president - no doubt influenced by the ceremony and concept of a social contract. Amazing how tiny Slovenia's democratic tradition has influenced much larger nations. In the Hamilton area, this democratic tradition is evident in the various committees and organizations, like the scholarship foundation, that have been organized/elected for the purpose of serving the greater community. I am proud of the fact that after 1100 years Slovenia achieved independence and political freedom. The people achieved independence by trying to reason with the existing regime, and failing to achieve change by that route, they voted overwhelmingly to proceed with independence. Then after being forced to fight a brief, courageous war, holding off an army with a vastly superior number of soldiers and equipment, they quickly entered into the international community as a respected independent state. And what other country adopts a national anthem the presents a vision of equality and friendly existence among nations? These were amazing and noteworthy achievements in a very brief period of time. Continue... 90 rojstni dan_ V nedeljo, 5. februarja 2017, je naša faranka, Manja Erzetič v krogu svoje družine praznovala 90. rojstni dan. Iskrene čestitke ob visokem jubileju in še na mnoga zdrava in krepka leta. Naj Vas spremlja božji blagoslov in priprošnja božje Matere Marije. VESTNIK 2017 | 75 6th Sunday in OT Response: Blessed are those who walk in the law of the Lord! First Reading Ecclesiasticus 15:15-20 Goodness is possible for everyone. No one has permission to sin. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 2:6-10 True wisdom of life is found in Christ Jesus. Gospel Matthew 5:17-37 Goodness is never skin-deep. Virtue is not cheap. "But I say this to you." Illustration What do you think of Western civilisation?" The question was put to Mahatma Gandhi. His reply was, "I think it would be a very good idea." This was a clever reply, a very funny reply and also a very insightful reply. The questioner was looking for a positive affirmation of Western culture and the answer sought to remind the questioner that the West is by no means perfect. Gandhi knew that only too well. He was a qualified lawyer, trained at the Inns of Court in London, and yet his life was constantly blunted and blighted by Western officialdom and Western attitudes to colour, race and class. Thrown out of a railway carriage in South Africa simply because of his race, Gandhi found himself time and time again thrown into jail for resisting the rules and regulations of authority that sought to preserve the status quo of white supremacy and power in the world. Gandhi's whole life was a series of encounters with unjust regulation and discrimination. He was a man of peace, who 76 | VESTNIK 2017 spent his whole life struggling with people who employed force and violence to preserve their way of life and to prevent change. People of peace can never enjoy quiet lives, it seems, since they are forever in conflict with whatever is unjust in the world. Gandhi won the battle in his own heart and peace reigned there, but the world he lived in constantly brought him nothing but trouble and conflict. Gospel Teaching That pattern of life is also true of Jesus. The character that emerges from the Gospels is both gentle and strong, peaceable and forthright, calm and courageous. Never in his dealings does Jesus act in a violent manner, nor does he say things to provoke people to riot or revolt. Yet his every word is challenging and demanding. His call asks for nothing less than everything by way of commitment to him. In his words that we hear today, part of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus will not settle for outward observance or superficial fulfilment of God's commandments. Scribes and Pharisees are good at that, he says. It is not enough not to kill your enemy; you must seek actively to be at peace with the enemy. It is not enough to avoid adultery; you must live a sexually honest life. It is not enough to avoid the big sins; all sins are damaging. There is no need to swear oaths; just use honest and straightforward speech. These are the deep roots of true life, of good life, and nothing less will do, says the Lord. The Sermon on the Mount challenges us every day to a deeper fulfilment of God's word. Superficial skimming will never be acceptable. Now we begin to see how and why Jesus became such a problem for people. If someone had asked Jesus, "What do you think of our civilisation?" Jesus could well have replied, "I think it would be a good idea." Application This is the vocation of each one of us, wherever we live. We are called to contribute to it by our life. Someone who did that was Fr Gerry Reynolds, a Redemptorist priest who spent thirty years of his life at Clonard Monastery in Belfast. A man of the south, the north of Ireland became his home and Belfast his place of work. Shortly after arriving there, in the midst of the "Troubles", Gerry asked his fellow Redemptorist Fr Alec Reid, "How do we stop the killing?" Fr Alec replied, "We have to dialogue," and so began their great work of reconciling that divided community. Fr Gerry became a great ecumenist, becoming friends with the Protestant communities, attending their services, getting to know people. He crossed the divide. He took to heart the words of the Lord that it is not enough not to kill your enemy. You must seek to be reconciled with your enemy before anything else in life. Be willing to talk. Be willing to learn. Be willing to get to know others. The great wisdom that we are asked to learn calls us to love one another. Those who did not know that killed the Lord of glory, just as another man put an end to Gandhi's life with a bullet. Peace of heart and mind, peace of attitude are tremendous gifts of grace, but they exist in a troubled world. But be brave, says the Lord, I have overcome the world.
