Skupni dohodki so bili $787.44, kar je za takratne razmere zelo lepa vsota. Stroškov so imeli $477.52 (največ za pivo—$133.-25). Preostanek $309.92. Br. (Dalje prihodnjo sredo.) J. r. Our Juvenile Circles were established four years ago and now numher about 35 aetive units. The new program is sure:to augment these very considerably, and at the sartie time bolster our Juvenile Department ranks. Our Circle activities, as outlined in the Program presented at the convention by the special committee, will henceforth be coordinated and direited by a Juvenile Director elected at the convention. This is a new office in our organization. The Director will be an executive member of the Supreme Board, and the authority and responstbility of this office give assurance that our juvenile movement is destined to bring favorable results in the future. To be sure, the united cooperation of rank and file membership is necessary and expected. By appropriating the sum of $5000 annually for the promotion of Juvenile Circles, with additional sums as deemed necessary, and the diversified activities envisioned in the Program, the entire undertaking will be on a much larger scale than heretofore attempted. The new Juvenile Program has wide possibilities for genuine interesi, progress, and expansion. It* promises not only to consolidate our present forces by inatilling in our youngsters the špirit of our organization's principles and ideals, but it will also make the Society consdous of the vi tal importance of a strong Juvenile Department. Other provisions in the twelve-point program include Juvenile Festivals consisting of vocal and instrumental as well as dramatic and cultural talent; these to be pro-moted locally, sectionally, and if feasible, nationally. Fur-thermore, local, seetional and national sports are to be fostered. Not overlooking the educational side of the question, a Juvenile Library is "also envisioned. Thus the Program includes practically ali phases of juvenile needs in recreation, sports, education as well as entertainment Another important feature is the establishment of Sum-mer Camps for SNPJ juveniles near our large communi-ties, the maintenance of which, hovvever, would have to be provided partly by local lodges and partly by the So-ciety. This project viewed by some at first as impossible, can be put into operation in most of our large communi« ties. In Cleveland, for instance, the SNPJ farm can be utilized for this purpose, and other communities will un-doubtedly find simliar project« practicable. Quite consistently, the Program provides for the com-pensation of Circle Managers, who shall be graded accord-ing to the results shown. Also, it asks for a Booklet con-taining particulars and instructions, to be prepared by the Juvenile Director, subject to approval of the Executive Commttiee. In addition, award certlficatea for meritori-ous work will be given to deserving members, based on a rating system. Finally, the Program calls for a membership campaign in 1942 "to attain a new campaign record," with "Good \Vill" suggested as a name for the drive. Also, that a Juvenile Convention be held in 1945, and a contest for the change of name, Mladinski List, to one that vvill be more suitable. It goes without saying that the Program was unani-mously adopted by the convention. Its 12 points cover practically everything that is needed to make our Circles strong. In this work, the united support of aH members vvill be required. We are confident that this will be forth-coming. r * Colorado Rockies Give Dance Oct 25 i D EN VER, COLO.—The Colorado Rockies, SNPJ lodge 646, are spon-soring a Confetti and Balloon dancc Saturday evening, October 25, at the Slovene Hali, 4468 Waahington St. We cordially invite ali members and friends to attend. Both lodges have already gont on record committing themselves to this project but are vvithholding any definite aetion until they knovv 'What is going to happen to the Ohio SNPJ Day in 1942?" The clour howcver, as only *>mu sepuratcd the wlnncrs Terrible reports are reaching us these days from every Slavic coun-try. No one with Slavic blood in his veins can remain indifferent to them. fn Czechoslovakia the f i r i n g squads and hangmen of the execu-tioner Heydrich have murdered in eold blood aeveral hundred leading Czechs. They did not spare even the representatives of the Prague Puppet Government installed by themselves, and thousands of Czech patriots vvere arrested and sent to the torture chambers of the Gestapo. In Poland terror without end con-tinues. Thousands of Poles paid with their lives for remaining true to their nationality. Whole villages and towns vvere depopulated and only the lack of bpUer copnection vvith Poland is bfndering us from seeing the true pieture of frighi-fulness to which unhappy Poland is subjeeted today. In Jugoslavia pitehed battles oc cur daily between the partisan groups and the Gcrmans and the Nazi cxecutioners punish the rebels by bullet and rope while the German bombing planeš are obliterating whole towns from the surface of the earth. Thousands of Jugoslavs are dying in the rebellion of the brave Chet-niks, who are valiantly defending their kin against the intruders. ln Bulgaria ruthless persecution vvas started against those who re fuse to submit ta government of Quislings vvho have sold their ovvn people to the Nazi tyrants. In the Soviet Union a vast river of blood of Russians and Ukrainians runs high, millions of Slavs are en gaged in brave defense against the eruel aggressor vvho has attacked the Eastern Slavs to enslave them and to rob Russia of the sources of materials in order that the NaziB may continue enslaving the Slavs of whom they want to create a race of German slaves and robota. The blood boils in every one of us and the idea of revenge for the | vvrongs perpetrated upon our old countries is seiting fast in cvery mlnd. Yet what is to be done? Is it possible to do something im-medlatcly to avenge the atroci-ties perpetrated upon our people by the Nazis vvho are the most resoluto enemies of aH Slavs. Brother Slavs! We have in our hands the means by vvhich to oppose immediately and efficiently the executioner who is preparing to turn his mailed fist even against our adopted country, the United States of America, after he (Jominates and enslaves Europe. Accordingi to the governmental reports, 60 per cent of the tuorkers emploged in our defense industry and producing the arms for America, Great Britain, Russia and their AUies, are ioorkers of Slavic tmgin: Poles, Czechosldvaks, Jugoslavs, Russians and UKramans It is in our hands and it depend« on us vvhether especially Russia, vvhich at this moment is defending herself so bravely and hcroically against a crucl enemy, shall have enough means of defense. It is our duty to do everything in our povver so that Russia, where also Polish and Czechoslovak regimenta are in process of formation vvill obtain enough ammunition, cannons, tanks and alrplanes to stop the Gcrmai) flood and to drivc the Nazi murderers back vvith bloody heads. There is danger in delay. No t one pun, »or tank or atr-plane ichioh can be produced and shipped speedily to the battlefield, must be delayed or left behihd through any fault oi ours. The lack of these arms vvould open nevv road for the advance of the Germans. It ls our sacred duty as human beings, as Slava and Americans to speed up produetion and transport of war material to Ruaaia. China and Great Britain, to baUlefielda where the fightors against Nazi Germany and her Italian and Japanese ally are waging* an uphill fight. • This task is most important of. ali novv. Everything else must be relegated to the second row. We must at this time concentrate aH our effarta on this. The expressions of sympathy, slo-gans, and rosolution* will not help if the fighters apainat Nazism urili have to oppose the modern arms of the enemy ivith bare hands. I know that the vvorkers and or-ganized labor especially have their just oconomic needs vvhich must be defended and demands whiCh must be met, but the defense oŽ iabor's rights certainly can be and must be conducted in the same manner as it i« being conducted by organized labor in Great Britain today, namely in such a manner that the produc Juvenile Circles Circle No. 1 Visita UMW Mamorlal a t Ludlow on Oct. 12 WALSENBURG, C O L O .—On Sunday. Convention i* addressed brlefly by Jugoslav Consul Unkovlč and President Vrlinič of SNZ. Second vlce-presldent Bolka reads hI* report tehich was not submitted for advanee publication a* required. Report foliow»: The 12th regular convention of the SNPJ belng the highest tribunal of our organization and the deliberatlng body to set pollcies and amend the by-laws for the betterment of our Soclety, I hereby ihake my report and recommandstions to this convention. For the past four years I have had the pleasure of being a member of the Supreme Board, the governlng body between convention*. I mad« regular raport* and recommendations to the seml-annual meetings (of the Supreme Board, some of vvhich were carrled out. others not. I made those recommendations with the slncere deslre to do my llttle bit in mak-ing our Society bigger, better and to follow the progressIve principles for Hvhich the SNPJ is well known. } ATHLETICS The past few ye*rs I was the member representing the Supreme Board on the Athletlc Committee. Athletics have helped our organization to get near member* and retaln some of our members urho would have droppad out and Jolned some other organization vvhich does have athletics. Th* Englisk-speaking delegate* representing their lodges at this convention can bast give tha result* of how the athletic program ln our Sodety helped get new members Into the lodge*. There are three outstanding athletlc affalrs a year sponsored by our Society. Tbe annual SNPJ ten-pln bowling tournament, tha national duck-pln tournament whlch Is mo*tly held ln Pennsgrlvania reglon because that reglon Is known for duck-pln bowUng, and the national softball tournament which is held ln conjunctlon with the snnual national SNPJ Day which wa* lnstituted qulte a few years ago. At these annual affalrs our membeis, pertlclpatlng ln these tournament* and oelebrations, trgvel many a mile to be present at these affalrs. and lt costs them money out of their own pockets. They meet old friends and make new ones, and also help advertiie and promote good SNPJ fraternallsm. No one can deny that these vsrlous sthletic affalrs sre beneflclal to the Soelety. Therefore the» program of athletics should be continued ln our organization, especially since our Juvenile Circle* as they grow older wlll also demand our attention and will be asking for financial help to promote šport* to malntaln and keep the Juvenile Circla* alive. The Athletlc Board wiU have an sppropriate resolution to present to this convention and I hope that lt will be given *V*ry possible conslderatlon «0 that our organization oan really have s good athletlc program. U The gusstlon of merger between our Soclety and the SSPZ, vvhich I am hopeful of, wlll necessltate a greater Incrsase ln our athletic fund. THE PROSVETA Our offieial organ Is the medlum whereby our members can espress their viaw* and sentlments, not oi)ly ln connectlon wlth our Soclaty, but also the economic, socisl and political situation that we as workers in this country sre faced with. Our members should be encouragad to ex-press their vievvs, and not be dlscouraged by gettlng their artial** cut or Jumblad up Just because they don't happen to *ult the edltor; or by having tha edltor take advanUge of his offlce to stUck or rldlcule the vvriter of the artlcle by edltor'* note* or comment*. I believe our members are intelllgent enough to declde for themselves whether an artlcle is good or bad, and therefore edltor's comment* st the end of sn' artlcle are entlrely unneoe*ssry snd uncalled for. I believe the only artlcle* that should be •uppressad are those whlch oould result in the Society being held for Ubel. Our organization was founded on a free-thought basis, lat os keep it that wsy. i SUPPORTINO UNIONS - n S < Our orgsnizstion should contlnua to support bona me trada unlonlsm, snd th* struggles of the vvorklng men snd women ln this country to gsln for themselves a better way of life for their labor. Ona way we can help as sn orgsnizstion is to see to it that we buy, wherever possible, unlon made products that the Soclety needs, such as papar. buttons, badges, oalandsrs, etc. By so dolng we vvill do our shar* as a' vvorkers' fraternal orgsnlsatlon. ■ t: ' THE PR!!9TERY V I hsve hesrd many complainta from varlous lodges »of oUr Soclety that the eo*t of printing i* too high. It l* the duty of our lodge* to patronise our own prirtt shop, tt belongs to the members, therefoM lt should be used to tha advantage of th* members and lodges. Our* Is s unlon prlntery whlch is no more thsn proper, but stili our prlces on printing sre above those that are quoted by other unlon concerns that do the same type of vvork. There must be somethlng wrong. I hope that this convention vvill do somethlng to remedy this situation. Thia concludes my report. I hope the delegates wlll take it in the same light that I give it, no personal blas agalnst any membar.of .our organization; I am only trylng to give my vievvpoint ln makh* our 8NPJ blggar and better and to follovv the principles sat doWn by tha foundars of our organization. FRANK BOLKA, 2nd Vlce President Report accepted. ~ * Dlatrlct vlce-presldent J. Klansek reada h ia report, also not published. My report cover* the four yesrs' vvork vvhich I hav* done for the SNPJ since th* last convention when this offlce of Dist. Vi** President vvas first inaugurated by our organization. Of course, aH that was ezpected of us may not or may have been satlsfactory to our people. But vve must remcmbsr it was Just the sUrt of this vvork. and lt vvill bring better re-sulta ln time. My vvork vvas llmlted ln my dlstrlct because of the close contact of the maln offlce ln Chicago and, naturally, much of the vvork and advice that I could have rendered vvas done by some executive committee ihember. wher*as in the Western and Eastern distriets the Dist. Vlce Pres. had more dutles to perform. My work vvas more or less ln the form of a good-vvill ambaasador. I attended many of the social functlons of our organization both ln my dlstrlct and ln other varlous vleinltles. I found the members ln very high špirit about our organization and very obllging to rendar any assistance possible, e*pecially ln our younger E. Speaking element 1 find that they seem to be more understanding about our Insurance plans and vvork than they were a few y*ars ago. MEMBERSHIP Accordlng to flgures of our supreme secretary, we have galned membership of nearly 4,000 membars since 1937; or ln other words a gain of 1,000 members a year ln our adult dept, but ln our Juvenile dapt. w* dldnt do so well; we have 796 membars less than in 1937. Of cours*. many of these hav* tranaferred into our adult dept. Th* polnt I wl*h to bring out ls this: We have to bulld our reserve membership ln the Juvenile dept. So let us bulld our plan* around obtaining more Juvenile*. The Juvenile Circle* ar* * great aaaet ln bullding up auch a reserve, but it ian t a workable plan ln aU our communltle«. W* find that wh*re there ls an actlve *nd understanding circle adviaer w* hav* an setlve circle and act Ive lodge members; where th* advlsers are Ux, they dont far* so well and ln many communltle* where it would be poSblble to organlze * circle, we h*ve no one who l* sulUble for such vvork (that I* gratls work), or we find th* member* are prejudlced to *uch *ctlvlty a* they stili are in having Engllah speaking lodges Oh y**l we stili hsve som* and some of them are secretaries of our aenior lodge*. The membership ls constantly informed throl the minutes of supreme executive and finance committee meetings m J as other official report* on our expendltures anci investments For 1 reaaon a detalled report is unnecessary here. It can be stated howel that the supreme executive committee vvhich administers the buiJ of the Society, ls very thrlfty and cautlous. It buys only vvhat u J lutely necessary, and conducts the flnances and aH business generali J carefully and safely a* possible. 1 Thi* is true alao of the supreme finance committee vvhich has chJ of Investlng the Soclety's funds. As ls knovvn, some of our Investments vvere considerably affectedl the depresslon. Hovvever, vve came through without serious harml danger to the organization as can be seen from the detailed fina n J reports and finance committee reporta presented to the convention. Al we have sold nearly ali the rcal estate taken over for loans, most of ii favorable prlces. The outlook for the sale of the remainder is good. Our Society's assets amount to aeveral millions, and this is administel mo*tly by the finance oommittee. It ls evident that this is an impoitl committee vvhich requires conslderable knovvledge of financial and relJ matters. At present, three members of the supreme executive commiti are on the finance committee also, and this comblnatlon ha* proved to j a good one. ASSISTANCE TO AOED MEMBERS We have been conslderlng and trylng to solve thi* question on pai before every convention for the last 25 years perhap*. But it has ne been solved practlcally and *ati*factorily; the reason prob*bly being vve have never been vvllllng to contrlbute expressly for this purpose solution of our problem to sub*tantlally provide for aged members naver be reached ln this way. If anyone is sincerely ln favor of establlshlng dapendable and suffi aid for our aged and lnflrm members, I am certainly that person. r ago I drevv up a plan to bulld and malntaln a Home and presented the, convention. Of coiirse, the plan caUed for the necessary mont contrlbutlon of each member for this purpose, and this proved falsl. definite decision vvas made, but the question vvas deferred until bet tlmes vvhich never came and probably never vvill. Later I prepared a p for old-age benefit or pension. It vvas voted on in a members' referend —and lost. _ It ls evident from the dlscussion* ln Prosveta that the majority of members refuse to hear anything of any increased monthly assessme or contributlons. Whlle this remains true, it is impossible to think of Improvement ln that r**pect over what vve have at present. For I reaaon, I am not presentlng any special plan this time, but I recomme aiding aged and needy members from the special benefit fund as we h been dolng, but somevvhat more adequately than heretofore. ACTION rOR MERGER For many years vve have had the very important merger question fore us. It is knovvn that in the paat vve planned the merger of ali liberally Incllned and prlncipally cloaer related benefit organizsti The SNPJ vvas always ready, our committee was slncere and tried b to accompllah this. But in recent times only the members of SNPJ i SSPZ shovved any interest in s merger. Our aetion, therefore. hss be only for the merger of tljese tvvo socletles. and it finally has brought long desired and anxlously awaited result. I The minutes of our conferences and discussions a* vvell »« the fin merger contract have aH been published and our vvork snd achieveme are therefore knovvn to you and need not be given here. I would h to mentlon only that are trled ln every way and vvent as far ss possifa so that the merger vvould be realized if at aH pOMlbl*. This csused i rcat deal of trouble and worry and a lot of extra vvork. Hovvever, vve are very happy, as ali loyal members must be also, to 1 ble to pr***nt to thi* convention such an ezcellent and f*vorable mer contract; alao, that the actlon ha* been brought to the polnt where only convention* of both socletles need ratify and approve our work vvhich thia matter wUl b* finished snd finally settled.
