Stran na samem začetku Svetega pisma (prvo berilo) in stran iz evangelija sta dejansko tesno povezani. Poglavji 2 in 3 v Genezi sta veliko modrostno premišljevanje o človeku vseh časov in vseh dežel. /Prim. Oznanjevalec 2003/ October Is Rosary Month By Fr. Steve Ryan, SDB October has been designated as the month of the rosary. Why? You may say, "I thought it was in the month of May that we usually honor the Blessed Mother. How did she also get recognition in October?" Here is the answer... A lot of it has to do with an ancient naval victory which took place in October of 1571. At that time the Church in Europe faced a great challenge. The Muslim Turks had already conquered the Middle East and had forced many Christians living there to turn to the Islamic religion. Many others had been killed. These Muslim Turks then moved across the Mediterranean Sea and had their sights on the Christian kingdoms of Italy. It was their intention to march all the way to Rome and eliminate the Catholic Church. The pope at the time - Pope Pius V - called on Christian Europe to defend the faith from being taken over by Islam. He wanted to put together a military force to defeat the Islamic threat. He didn't see it as simply a military battle but also as a spiritual battle. The pope encouraged the whole Catholic world to pray the rosary. He saw the threat as so significant (and it was) that he cautioned: "Civilization is in desperate need of the intervention of the Blessed Mother." A few countries in Europe stepped up and responded to the Holy Father's plea for military assistance. Militarily, many remained apathetic and Christian forces were greatly outnumbered. Others prayed. Many prayed the rosary daily that month. Don Juan of Austria (one of the few that led the Christian naval forces) somehow won an "against all odds" Mediterranean Sea battle versus the Turks. During the battle, the Battle of Lepanto, the Christian forces were able to drive the Turks away and Christian Europe was saved from the invasion. The battle took place on October 7, 1571. Pope Pius V attributed his victory to the intercession of Mary. The daily rosary became part and parcel of many Catholic homes. The pope decreed that the first Sunday in October would be the feast of the Holy Rosary. It was a way of giving thanks to our Blessed Mother for the "win" in the Battle of Lepanto - October 7. 445 | VESTNIK 2018 CWL - KZZ JUBILEE ANNIVERSARY Preparations for our Jubilee Anniversary as a Catholic Women's League are in full swing. Pope Francis is asking the Church to "step up" to praying the rosary. We need Mary's intercession right now! Today, in 2018, the pope is affirming that the world is being threatened by the evil one who's trying to do a "hostile take-over". Civilization is in desperate need of the intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As we have seen in the news, disunified bishops and clergy are battling within the Church. Several bishops protected and encouraged a homosexual sub-culture in seminaries and dioceses. Secularists boldly declare that marriage and family life are irrelevant and outdated in today's world. Many countries throughout the world (including Ireland) not only tolerate abortion but seem to celebrate it. Pope Francis invites all the faithful of the world to pray the rosary daily during the entire month of October 2018. He asks for the intercession of the holy Mother of God to protect the Church from the devil, who is seeking to separate us from God and from each other. There is division and disruption around us and prayer is the only way we can defeat it. Let's follow the simple but beautiful devotion of saying the rosary on a daily basis during this month of October. Also pray the Memorare. It is a powerful prayer and goes like this: Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother! To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen. >-• 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time Response: May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. First Reading Genesis 2:18-24 Man and woman are made in the image of God, to live in communion with each other. Second Reading Hebrews 2:9-11 Jesus our brother leads us into the fullness of holiness. Gospel Mark 10:2-16 What God joins together in harmony, humanity must not divide or separate or subjugate. "What God has united, man must not divide." Illustration The priest was waxing lyrical in his homily about the beautiful story of the creation of Eve from Adam's rib as a symbol of the unique closeness and intimacy that is possible between a man and a woman. He praised the enlightened thinking of the story: at a time when women were often seen merely as chattels, something a man owned - and one man could own many women at one time - the priest saw the story as making an important statement about the unique dignity of women and of woman's equality with man. The women discussing his homily after Mass had a different understanding: "Typical," one said. "That reading says women are merely 'helpmates'. We are just there for the men - we exist for them. Is that what they call 'enlightened'?" 447 | VESTNIK 2018 Gospel Teaching Context is, of course, crucial in understanding any piece of writing - especially scripture. Our modern ears can easily interpret the Genesis story as regarding women as subservient. From the perspective of the writer, over two and a half thousand years ago, the intention was precisely the opposite. Today's Gospel faces us with a similar issue. We hear it through the prism of our particular questions about church teaching on marriage as a lifelong sacrament, the pain of marriage breakdown and the position of children in society. But to understand what Jesus was saying, we also need to appreciate his context and the questions he was addressing. In Jesus' time, there were two main schools of thought on marriage within the Jewish faith. One group taught that a man could divorce his wife only for a serious reason, such as adultery. The other school thought that it was a man's right to divorce his wife for any reason whatsoever - even if she burnt the dinner. In that society it was only men who could initiate divorce - women had no such right. The Pharisees' question was a test. They wanted Jesus to take sides, perhaps even to contradict the Law of God. Their question was not about the rights and wrongs of divorce and remarriage as we might ask the question in today's world; it was specifically about how much power a husband has over his wife. Jesus refuses to buy into their assumption that a man has any right at all to exercise such power over his wife. By ruling out divorce completely, Jesus is saying: a man can't treat a woman as an object; he can't get rid of her for any reason, serious or trivial. A woman isn't a possession, as Genesis pointed out. She is a person with equal dignity and should be respected as such. Jesus' outright ban on divorce is a rejection of male domination of women - he affirms marriage as a covenant of equal partners. When Mark recorded this teaching some years later, his Christian community lived in a very different context - Gentile rather than Jewish, in a culture that gave some women the right to divorce their husbands. So Mark applies Jesus' teaching to his own community's situation, balancing Jesus' prohibition on men divorcing their wives with an equal ban on women divorcing their husbands. Jesus rejects the idea that people can be treated as disposable objects. This is reinforced in the incident of Jesus blessing the children. Children were another group often regarded simply as the possessions of their parents, without rights of their own. In welcoming and blessing them, Jesus shows his respect for every human being made in the image of God -even those regarded as the least and most powerless. Application Jesus' teaching on marriage - and indeed his whole attitude and behaviour towards women and children - only makes sense when seen in the context of his time and culture. It is a teaching about the essential dignity of every human being and about what that means for all relationships, especially marriage. His teaching is simply that we should treat people as human beings, not as objects for our personal gratification or comfort. We need to apply this to our context, our situation. It means respecting and upholding the dignity of every person. Domination and control have no place in marriage, in the home or in any relationship. Whether we are married or not, Jesus' words challenge us to examine the quality of our relationships. Do I treat others as means to my ends, or do I respect their dignity and worth as human beings. In other words, when it comes to people, am I a user, or a real lover?
