Another Great week at our Slovenian Summer Day Camp (SSDC). With 43 kids participating at camp this year, fun was had by all! We had the bouncy castle, comedy magic, mad science along with lots and lots of water fun. We had high school students volunteering their time and interacting with the campers. These camp leaders truly were "All Stars". This year, our camp was pleased to host the acrobats of Piran Slovenija "Flip". We had a mid week performance and many of our parishioners came out and enjoyed the show. We had over 120 guests entertained by the skills of this talented group. On Friday, Nancy Dundek, Tony Horvat, Sidonia Poppa and Heidy Novak prepared a tasty breakfast and lunch for everyone. "Flip" acrobats did a workshop with our campers and leaders, participated in a group soccer game and enjoyed each other's company. By the end of our day on Friday, everyone was sad to see this group move on to their next destination. In the short time these two groups were together, friendships were made and plans to visit each other were in the making. SSDC also had the support of a number of groups. St. Joseph's Society which has always been a great friend to our camp. We would also like to thank the CWL, Moya Credit Union and Sidonia Poppa for their support. Unfortunately our parent/camper BBQ soccer game was sold out, however, we will try to re-schedule this event shortly on Sunday after mass. Thank you to everyone who participated in our camp and we look forward to seeing you again next summer! Heidy Novak P.s. Special thank you to Heidy Novak, who for 17 years is taking care of our Day Camp. /Fr. First Reading 1 Kings 19:9. 11-13 After storm and earthquake, the voice of the Lord is heard in the breeze. Second Reading Romans 9:1-5 Paul is distressed in spirit for his sisters and brothers of Israel. Gospel Matthew 14:22-33 A storm at sea reveals the Lord of the storm. "As soon as he felt the force of the wind." Illustration The ferry sailed from Troon on the Scottish coast and was making for Larne on the Irish coast, a voyage of two hours. An hour into the journey, as the boat left the waters of Clyde and entered the wider sea, the weather suddenly changed, the sea became choppy and the boat began to shake. People on board began to look at one another with some concern. Some faces went pale and everyone sat still and held on to something sturdy. The ship's captain and crew had to make manoeuvres to ease the passage through the waves and the boat came into harbour after three hours at sea. The trip was a reminder of how stormy this particular sea can be. In 1953 the Princess Victoria car ferry, also bound for Larne, had gone down in a storm with great loss of life. Storms are powerful forces of nature and there is only so much that human beings can do to survive them. When human skill and bravery are spent, we are at the mercy of 340 | VESTNIK 2017 the waves and in our peril we call out to the Lord to save us or we perish. In extreme situations such as these, brave people often emerge. On the Princess Victoria the radio operator, David Broadfoot, remained at his post sending out messages for assistance until the ship sank. The captain, too, continued to radio his position, his final message saying that the Irish coast was visible. Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel we hear of the storm that suddenly broke over the disciples on the Sea of Galilee. They are taken by surprise by a sudden squall, quite a regular occurrence on this particular sea, and they are hard pressed to keep the boat and themselves afloat. When the Lord comes towards them during that dark and troubled hour of the night, they fear they are seeing a ghost. But the Lord assures them that it is he and Peter, anxious to reach him, comes to him across the water. This event, like so many others, deepens the disciples' faith in Jesus that he is not just an ordinary man, but also the Son of God. This extraordinary event reveals to them that Jesus is an extraordinary person. They can put their trust in him even in the most worrying of circumstances. Peter, feeling the force of the waves, begins to sink as he makes his way towards the Lord, and the Lord reaches out his hand to steady him. In days to come another storm will overcome these same men and it will bring Jesus to a cross on a hill outside Jerusalem. The disciples will be scattered, frightened and fearful for their own lives, and Jesus will be taunted by people who will take delight in reminding him that he saved others. Can he not now save himself? Application Storms occur in every human life. Like storms at sea, they can be overwhelming events and we can find ourselves helpless to avoid them or to escape from their consequences. Terrible weather is bad enough but human violence, be it in family, in society or in international strife, is a force that we can feel powerless to survive, much less to overcome. In the middle of such storms, when anger is raging, when things are said and done that hurt us, we are in great danger of adding fuel to the flames by the storm of anger that invades our own soul. In times like these we need brave people to emerge who will faithfully carry out the things that make for safety and sanity in life. Storms play themselves out at sea and they will also play themselves out in human relationships, as long as we do not add our own fury to the fire. Calm and quiet-natured people are needed in volatile situations - people who pray and call out to the Lord of the storm for assistance. Prayer brings us the gift of wisdom and a way of responding well to those who are out of control. In personal life it is a gift of not responding angrily to the barbs that others may send our way. In public life it is the gift of diplomacy that seeks understanding with our enemies, and not their destruction. People of little faith that we are, we pray to the Lord of the storm for the salvation of our world.
