Professor Milan Betetto, 1922-2007 Milan Betetto was born 22 January 1922 in Ljubljana. He graduated from high school in 1940 and obtained his MD from the Ljubljana Medical School in 1948. In 1950 he started his residency at the Department of Dermatology at the Ljubljana Medical Center, and he passed the specialty board exam in dermatology and venereology in 1952. From 1955 to 1964 he enjoyed the mentorship of Franjo Kogoj, who was active as supervisor at the Department of Dermatology in Ljubljana during this period. At a time when X-ray treatment was the second method of choice after surgery, he specialized in soft X-ray treatment of skin carcinomas and other skin malignancies. He published a number of manuscripts pertaining to experimental application of X-rays in animals. Together with Herbert Goldschmidt and Gustav Bonse, he published the chapter "X-Ray Treatment of Dermatoses" in a supplement to Josef Jadassohn's famous textbook (1). Within the Department of Dermatology, he organized and directed the X-ray service using the widely-used Dermopan Siemens apparatus. One of his outstanding achievements was the treatment of eyelid carcinomas using a special lead model for protection of the eyes. Betetto was also interested in topical treatment, venereal diseases, and dermatoses in metal workers, and he organized the photodocumentation cabinet in the department. His numerous publications appeared mostly in Slovenian and German journals. In 1970 he received the rank of assistant professor, and in 1975 the rank of full professor of dermatology and venereology. Together with Janez Fettich he helped to prepare the first dermatological textbook in Slovenian (Mala dermatovenerologija) in 1974. In 1993 he prepared the revised third edition of the book as the primary author (2). He participated in sports, and in his younger years he enjoyed skating and was later active as an officer in the Ljubljana ice-hockey club. He also enjoyed fishing until he had to give it up due to his long illness. He was good natured and optimistic, and this helped him endure the deterioration of his health. We would like to convey our condolences to his daughters Alenka and Nina. Aleksej Kansky and Igor Bartenjev R E F E R E N C E S (1) Goldschmidt H, Bonse G, Betetto M. Röntgentherapie von Dermatosen.
