GREGORIJA VELIKEGA | ST. GREGORY THE GREAT SLOVENIAN CHURCH 39/58 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 25.9. 2022 Fr. Vrnimo se torej k bogoslužju ljubezni do reve-žev, k upanju v božjo pravicnost, k zaupanju v nje-govo besedo. Predvsem bomo našli poklicanost kristjana k nenavezanosti, uboštvu, k velikodušno-sti in darovanju. First Reading Amos 6:1. 4-7 The prophet denounces the complacen-cy of wealthy people who live a life of luxury and pleasure, while ignoring the dangers into which the society around them is falling. Second Reading 1 Timothy 6:11-16 The writer encourages the young leader of the community to take Jesus as his example and so live up to the demands and responsibilities of his position. Gospel Luke 16:19-31 Jesus tells the story of the fate of the rich man and the beggar Lazarus, warn-ing his listeners of the danger of ne-glecting those who are in need of help and assistance. “If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be con-vinced even if someone should rise from the dead.” Illustration There is a scene in the musical film My Fair Lady in which Alfred Doolittle, father of Eliza, calls on Professor Henry Higgins in the hope of being granted money in exchange for his daughter’s staying with the teacher of elocu-tion and his household. In explaining his mo-tive, as well as his somewhat cynical attitude towards the situation, Doolittle describes him-self as one of “the undeserving poor”. He does not claim any particular right to be given funds, but cites his needs, particularly for beer, which, he says, are just as great “as any widow who gained money from six charities for the death of the same husband”. This distinction between so-called deserv-ing and undeserving poor people was an idea common in Victorian times and can still be detected today, when certain people refer to those who are unemployed and those on benefits as “shirkers” or “scroungers”, with the inevitable moral judgement that such terms imply. Gospel Teaching In the Bible, we find that poor people are the particular concern of the prophets. We remember that the prophets are God’s spokespeople, so their words carry weight. They urge their listeners to be attentive to the needs of those who are most vulnerable in society, whom they often describe as “the widow”, “the orphan” and “the poor”. These are people who are dependent on the good-will of better-off members of the society. However, for the prophets, looking after those who are less fortunate is not an act of charity: it is a matter of justice. In the Hebrew scriptures, the land belongs to God and is given to the people of Israel in trust, to be looked after and used for the benefit of all the people. Everyone is supposed to have a share in the land and its produce. So, for the proph-ets of Israel, the fact that there are poor peo- ple is an indictment of the society: it is a sign that something is wrong. The prophets are concerned with poor people, not because they think that they are particularly pious or close to God, not because they consider them to be deserving, but simply because they are poor. It does not matter whether others would regard them as deserving or undeserving: the prophets are saying, in uncompromising terms, that such distinctions in wealth and standards of living are wrong in the sight of God, and if better-off people do not realise this, then they will be taught a painful lesson. Application Jesus’ parable illustrates this theme, one with which Luke is especially concerned in his Gospel account. We do not know why Lazarus is in such dire circumstances, and the fact that we are not told suggests that it does not matter. The point is that cheek by jowl we have extreme wealth and extreme poverty. In our world, we can see the same situa-tion. There is a tendency to think that helping poor people is a matter of charity; but for the prophets this is a question of justice. As Christians, we have to take the word of God as presented in the scriptures seriously. That is the warning the Lord delivers to the rich man about his relatives: “if they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets” (that is, the word of God), then nothing will convince them. Jesus stands in the line of the prophets and it is his teaching in the Gospel that we must think about. It is when we find Jesus’ teaching most awkward and uncomfortable that we might ask ourselves why. In our context, the proph-ets would not see the existence of foodbanks as a positive sign of the generosity of the community; rather, their ques-tion would be: why do such centres exist in the first place? Perhaps we should be more involved in the political life of our country and ask uncomfortable questions of our elected representatives in national government, and also our local councillors, about these issues. If we think that the Church should stay out of politics and confine itself simply to mat-ters of religion, we might keep in mind the words attributed to Hélder Câmara, the Brazilian Archbishop of Recife, who made the distinction between charity and justice in a telling observation: “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint: when I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist!” New branch hours in Hamilton Phone: 905-578-7511 Tuesdays 11:00a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Thursdays 11:00a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Fridays 11:00a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Outside of these regular office hours please call 1-888-728-1742 to reach our Browns line staff; if you get the voicemail please leave a message and someone will call you back. It goes something like this: there once lived an old farmer who had diligently tended to his crops for many years. He relied on his trusty, hardworking horse to plow the fields. But one day, the horse broke through the fence and ran away. Upon hearing this news, the farmer’s neighbors rushed over to the farmer to voice their con-cern. “What bad luck this is?” they said, “You will not have your horse during the critical planting season.” The farmer listened intently, nodding his head as if in agree-ment, smiling slightly. Then he spoke softly, “Bad luck, good luck – who really knows?” A few days later the horse, accompanied by two wild horses, returned to the farmer’s stable. The farmer imme-diately realized that he could train these two new horses to help him plow his field more efficiently. Soon after, the neighbors heard about this and visited the farmer. “You are now blessed with three strong horses,” they said in unison, “What great luck this is!” But the laconic farmer simply replied, “Good luck, bad luck – who really knows?” The farmer gave one of the untamed horses to his son. While riding the horse, the son was thrown off and broke his leg. The farmer’s neighbors came around again and expressed their worry, “It is a shame that your son will not be able to help you during planting season. This is such bad luck!” The farmer smiled faintly, and said, “Bad luck, good luck – who really knows?” A few days later, the Chinese emperor’s army rode ominously into town under gray clouds. The general’s order was to draft the eldest son from every family into the army. One of the soldiers took one look at the farmer’s son’s broken leg and motioned to have him left behind. The army marched out of town while tearful resi-dents waved goodbye to their sons, knowing that they may not see them again. Later in the day, the neighbors gathered at the farmer’s house. “You are the only family that did not have their son drafted into the army,” they said. “This is such good luck!” The farmer, who was busy with his chores, looked up and said, “Good luck, bad luck – who really knows?” SLOVENSKA ŠOLA September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in elementary school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral home-land and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra-curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parent or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones we use in English schools so that they can be easily fol-lowed and understood. We offered our existing Sola families an online survey to determine the best day to hold classes and the overwhelming choice was to keep it on Saturdays. So, starting September 24, classes will be held on Saturdays from 9am to 12:30pm. A registration link will be provided to existing Sola families. For any new students, please contact Sandy at sferletic@gmail.com or 905-977-8464 for the registration information or to an-swer any questions. See you at Šola!! - Sandy Ferletic First day of Slovenian School year 2022-2023 Jesenski banket V nedeljo, 18. septembra smo praznovali našega zavetnika, sv. Gregorja Velikega. God has blessed us with another beautiful Sunday. I would like start by thanking both choir's for helping us em-brace the spirit of Sunday mass again with song. The men's choir is missing a number of members as they are now singing with the angels in heaven; but it was clear to me that they were with you all in spirit today as your songs were especially wonder-ful today. I had only 3 short items to share with you all, but Fr. Drago added a fourth. First: I would like to take a moment to congratu-late and thank St Joseph's Society for all they do to not only maintain strong ties amongst members of our Slovenian Community, but as they continue to build on our foundation. Ideas are always being bouced around on what they can do to bring people together while accommodating the needs of the the older members of our community. Well, as some have already seen, they created a beautiful court-yard surrounding the bocce courts at Villa Slovenia next door. If you haven't yet, I invite you to take a stroll on the new sidewalk promenade and enjoy the gardens and some shade under the beautiful new gazebo. On behalf of us all, St. Joseph's Society - Thank you! Second, on October 16th we will be hosting an encore presentation of Exodus 1948. I had the op-portunity to attend the first presentation with my mom and found it not only interesting, but amazing to hear the stories of many others who came to Can-ada during that time. For those who are concerned about a lot of talking and a long presentation - no need to worry. Following a delicious lunch there is a short video which was put together with live ac-counts by survivors of this exodus briefly explaining their experiences and what happened. The video is in English. We hope you will call to reserve your seat and attend this luncheon to listen to a little history explaining what Slovenians around us went through for their freedom in this great land of ours. Next, the Slovenian Canadian Scholarship foundation will be handing out scholarships again this year. Please read the vestnik to get details on the application process. This year, the awards will be presented after english mass, here in the church on November 20th. Please share this information with anyone who you think may be able to take advantage of the opportunity for a scholarship award. Any finally, Over my many years participating in our Slovenian Community, and more recently, I have personally witnessed the amazing support of our people. Being emersed or even slightly touched by our Slovenian culture and heritage, we have a spe-cial understanding of one another. We make unique memories and build relationships because of our Slovenian Community. I urge everyone here today... and virtually, to please not let what we have fade away or fall apart. It took decades to build what we have, but only a little effort is needed to keep it going. Talk to your families, your children, grandchildren, spouses, your friends. Many are married to people of other cultures, but I'm sure they have been touched by our traditions in some small way and see the value of having a second culture in their lives. I urge every-one to re-commit to coming together and helping to keep our Slovenian family alive. With so many of us, it wouldn't take much, perhaps just one day, per-haps just one weekend, perhaps just one event each year and we will leave an amazing legacy to those who come after us. It takes more than just 10 people to keep our community thriving, but only a little effort from all. Thank you and I look forward to seeing you at one of our future parish events!
