Then Alzheimer’s disease barged in and rewrote the lesson plan. Suddenly, at 57, Hočevar was no longer fit for the classroom. That was four years ago. But even though the memory-robbing disease prematurely ended her teaching career, Hočevar is still going about the business of challenging minds. Twice a week for the past three years, Hočevar has held “remembering sessions” for older adults at Parma (Ohio) Community General Hospital’s ElderCenters in Parma and Brecksville. In recognition, the Alzheimer’s Association Cleveland Area Chapter will give Hočevar, 61, of North Roy-alton, its Arlene L. Ellis Volunteer of the Year Award in May. “Visiting in an adult daycare center will prove that life doesn’t end with a diagnosis,” said ElderCenters manager Laura Matthews, who nominated Hočevar. “Here at the day care, we’re giving people their lives back.” Hočevar’s role is to help older people remember the details of those lives. About 25 seniors turned out for last week’s remembering session at the Brecksville center. Some of them, like Hočevar, have Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Before each week’s sessions, Hočevar picks up a kit from the Cleveland Public Library that is designed to job people’s memories. The items in the kit fit a theme: seasons, fashion, pets, the Depression and many others. Last week’s theme was remembering the home. “Do you remember your home when you were young?” Hočevar asked the seniors. “We had a duplex.” “We had a duplex, too,” one person offered. “I remember because the address was 444.” Like a miner shining a light into memory’s dark (Continued on page 5) Rescuing an American Pilot Downed in Slovenia By Janez Grum On November 19lh, 1^44 American pilot, Lieutenant Maurice Brash, Jumped out of his hit and already burning search Plane. He landed with his Parachute on the right bank °f the Sava River, about a kilometer (0.6 miles) east °f the Šentjakob Bridge, northeast of Ljubljana, while the plane crashed on Ike left bank. It is likely ^at a German antiaircraft machine-gun had shot it down from the then temporary airfield on the other side of the railroad, looking from the Zalog Road at Studenec near Ljubljana. If the German group at the mentioned bridge also had an antiaircraft machine-gun, it too was shooting at Brash’s plane. In those days I heard several times that the first to come running to the landed pilot was Fiber’s yfy\\othefs fDaf Ljfeetirvf AMERICAN HOME MOTHERS You Have Been Enrolled in a JVoVena cfMasses beginning on Mother’s Day and in a remembrance in all the prayers of the Marianists DURING THIS YEAR. shepherd from Zalog, a kid 13 or 14 years old. He led him along the Sava down towards the well-known Plevnik’s Mill, even though Micemik’s mill was probably closer. France Stele, the owner of Plevnik’s mill, near the confluence of the Sava and Ljubljanica was also observing the stricken airplane, which was smoking, and fire soon appeared as well as the falling pilot. He raced across meadow and ditch to the place where the pilot had landed. An older person and a young kid approached him from the opposite direction. As they met he saw that the older person was the pilot of the airplane shot down and noticed that he ' was seriously burned about the face, neck, and hands. He turned back to his mill with the pilot and shepherd. He emphasized to the shepherd that he must not tell anyone that the parachutist was with them, promised him some flour and gave him some money. Since he was afraid that the Germans, searching for the pilot, would come to his house he hid him in the leave bin, where he had a part of an old plow, old wheels from a wagon, and other junk, all already previously covered with hay, and now he threw some more on it. Luckily, the Germans did not come that day. I suppose that the parachutist was hidden there till dusk and that the proprietor had offered him some kind of drink. At dusk he took him into the kitchen, where his wife prepared scrambled eggs and a drink. At this time his little daughter, Maria, started crying nearby and came into the kitchen. There in the glimmering light she noticed a strange person very badly burned on the face and hands, which frightened her terribly The mother quickly ordered her that she go back to her room and said: “You didn’t see anything.” That's what Stele’s daughter, Marija Orazem, living in Toronto, told me this year around the time of Assumption Day In the meantime her father rushed to the (Continued on page 4 My Mother When I was born, I was glad you were there to hold me and comfort me, To feed me and rock me to sleep. AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 10, 2001 2 t Mlakar’s Walk Down Memory Lane ^ 5W Well, I am back, don’t mark me as missing class, but first a couple of jokes before we get back into the classroom. A young man in love with a pretty girl wanted to impress her, so he took her to his farm to show her his large heard of cattle. When they got close to the pasture, he noticed two cattle with their noses pressed together as if they were kissing. “I would sure like to do that,” said the young man as he moved a little closer to his girl. “Go ahead,” she answered, “they are your cattle.” Okay, one more joke before the bell rings. A woman on the Bayou was watching her husband pushing a wheelbarrow, full of wood, up a steep hill. He had to stop half way to catch his breath and as he did so, he thought he was in better shape. His wife watched from the lounge chair on the porch and when he got to the top of the incline and put the wheelbarrow down, she said, “That wheelbarrow would have rolled a lot better if you had put air in the tire.” Well, as I have said in my previous writings, Ray was looking for classes that did not have much homework and I found a few. One of the classes was “Stage Craft.” This class was given by the wood-working instructor, Mr. Ungerwright. It was a class job throughout the semester to make scenery for the “Spring Play.” It goes without saying that John Marshall put on some dam good plays, with actors such as Carl Santa and Frank Clover. Happy to say Frank Clover made it to Hollywood and TV. Anyway, it was the classes’ job to make the scenery for the upcoming play. We made walls out of framing of 1x3 inch boards and then tacking on a muslin material, stretched across the entire frame. Quite a few frames as such had to be made to complete an entire scenery of a room. The material then had to be sized with some sort of penetrating glue to make the muslin material stiff and smooth. Then came the painting of the material and being on a school fixed budget, we used the paint that went the farthest, Kem-Tone. One could roll the paint on in no time. In some cases it took more than one coat. Fortunately, in most of the plays, although there were three act plays, the scenery remained the same. There were doorways to make, as well as windows. Boy, when I finished that class, I felt I could get a job with Mitchell House Builders, but back in those days, I had a lot of dreams. The students in the Stage Craft Class also had to come up with various sound effects as needed for the play, such as bolts of thunder. That was easy for we had sheets of metal that were thin and when you rattled them, with the use of an amplifier, it really sounded like thunder. With a strobe light we were able to produce lightening against a window in the scenery. Also by laying plastic on the floor behind a window back stage, we were able to put a fine spray of water from a hose to indicate rain falling on the window pane. An actor would soon close the drapes on the window so as not to see the rain, but it was done primarily so the back stage crew could stop spraying water on the window pane and start mopping up behind the stage. Then there were always doorbells and phones that had to be wired up for necessary use throughout the play, fortunately, the last two weeks before the play was put on, the stage craft class had to be there with the actors, so as to provide the necessary lighting, sound effects, rain and everything else to go along with it to make the play a success. Ms. Van Dyke was the Play Director and at the end of the performance, she was always presented a huge bouquet of red roses by the actors in the play. The plays were great and went for two nights each spring with a full house. -Hollywood, here we come. That class always gave me a “B” and I took that class for two years. It was fun to say the least. It was for sure that I was better at putting scenery together than I was at making footstools, but I guess God intended for us to have only one great outstanding talent. Unfortunately, none of the big-wigs from RKO or Metro Golden Mayer were at the plays to appreciate the hard work, so learning how to make scenery did not much help after graduation, but it was a fun course, aside from rubbing elbows with some of the fine actors during rehearsals. Well, there goes the bell and it is time I head home with my school books in hand for my homework assignments for the next day. Till we get back in class again, May the Good Lord bless and watch over all of you and keep you all in good health! A couple of Sundays ago some of our family gathered at my niece Patty’s home to help celebrate her Dad’s birthday. My brother-in-law, Al, was surprised. My wife, Therese, brought pastry she had baked that morning. As she handed the pretty tray covered with doilies and loaded with pineapple squares to my other niece Shelly, there was a big smile on Shelly’s face. She hadn’t had pineapple squares since her Mom died. Her mom, my sister Mary, baked pineapple squares often for family gatherings. I love eating pineapple squares, so Mary gave my wife, Therese, the recipe. Therese bakes them often. (I must mention here they don’t have to be on a tray with doilies to taste good. I’ve eaten many from the pan they were baked in. Mmmm good.) Therese found people like pineapple squares as much as I do. So, beside family gatherings, she started baking them when there was a death in the family or the family of a friend. Therese would just send a tray over. No big fuss. This practice of sending pineapple squares to grieving family and friends has gone on for many years. Last week my daughter-in-law had an aunt die. Again, it was pineapple squares to the family. Each of our children enjoy the taste of pineapple squares. When Therese bakes them, and then puts the hot pan on our kitchen counter to cool, and any of our kids visit us at that time, the first words out of their mouths are, “Who died?” So, when you see pastry, what do you think of? For the Flis family and pineapple squares, the thought is, “Who died?” On the Verge of Moral Decay? Edft0L ones to pop up. New drugs As we enter into a new century and a new millennium, we bring to mind the events of the 20th century. There were two World Wars. Millions lost their lives at the battlefront, the concentration camps, and in their own homes. We endured three dictatorships: Fascism, Nazism, and Communism. The latter promised heaven on earth. It did not happen. When it finally collapsed, it left behind deep wounds, miseries and tears. Communism caused wars in Korea, in Vietnam and gave way to organizations intended to take over by force the reigns of governments in various parts of the world. Those who were indoctrinated in their ideology did not want to see or hear alternative theories. They blindly followed their leaders and they still do. Such was the case in Slovenia where the “old guard” is in command. Many still hold on to old delusions. In the last century the world made phenomenal technological advances. Gone are horse-driven wagons or ox pulled plows: machines do their work. Men do less manual labor; they can use tools. Technology advances enable us to span the continents in hours, not in days or weeks. We explored the universe for other living beings outside our planet earth. Mankind made extraordinary advances in medicine. Our life span has increased substantially. We eliminated some old scourges, but allowed new were discovered to reduce pain and cure illnesses. In the past century we had our share of natural disasters: earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches and landslides. Man cannot prevent them. We had many infectious diseases; AIDS, the most notorious. But if we look ahead to the 21st century, we can expect more advances in technology. We cannot fully imagine what is ahead in the computer industry. Yet, when we read today’s newspapers, listen to the radio or watch television, we see what is happening in the modem world: thefts, embezzlements, fraud, rapes, murders, corruption. Look at our schools. The young generation smokes more by the day, indulges in sex and uses hallucinogenic drugs. All this leads to the destmetion of society. When our forefathers came to this country, things were different. They brought with them moral values: Thou shall not kill, nor steal from your neighbor, but live properly. These are values to be passed on to future generations. Our television programs and movie films are full of violence and vulgarity. Our young ones watch all this and act accordingly-The government should step in and control the media and stop these abuses. The parents do not have time to educate their children, as they are busy making money. Where is the society heading? AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 10, 200 .n aoiau in vsr SLOVENE FOLK TALES ______by DUŠICA KUNAVER MIKLOVA ZALA y^Vne day the Turks I 1 attacked Šentjakob in the valley of Roz. The villagers ran away to hide themselves in the 2 “tabor,” as they called the H space around the church 5 surrounded by walls. In the tabors people could find shelter during the Turkish raids. The villagers fought bravely behind the tabor walls for a long time, but still the Turks made their way into the church. They killed the people or took them a,way as prisoners, and burnt down the village. Among the prisoners was a young and beautiful woman who had just been married. Her name was Miklova Zala. the Turks took Zala to Turkey and sold her to a rich pasha. Her beauty enchanted her master so much that he decided to marry her, provided that she accept the Moslem religion. Pretty Zala wouldn’t submit. Seven long years she lived in captivity. It happened that one day when she was singing a Slovenian song, an old gardener, who was also a prisoner, heard her singing. He was bom in Roz, in the same valley as Zala, so he understood every word of her song. It awoke old dreams in his heart so that he longed to see his beloved homeland again. He found an opportunity to talk to Zala. She recognized him as her old uncle who had fallen into Turk captivity long ago. They decided to escape, so they made their way out of Istanbul and headed towards the north. When they reached the river Danube they noticed that they were being hunted by werewolves. These were human-like creatures having only one eye in the middle of their forehead. They were able to smell a Christian and track him down. The refugees traveled upstream along the Danube, following the advice of an old Turkish woman. They walked by night only. During the day they hid in the water under the roots of the trees growing by the river banks. They put tussocks of grass on their heads so that the werewolves would not be able to spot them. One day when Zala and her uncle were hiding in the water the werewolves roared by and they heard them saying: “On this spot we smell a Christian soul, but we do not see here; she is no longer here.” Zala and her uncle reached Šentjakob at last. For seven long years Zala’s husband had waited for his wife. Then he decided to marry again. He had lost hope that his wife would ever come back. It was Sunday morning when the guests were going to the church for the wedding. Zala and her uncle, who looked like beggars, were standing in front of the church. When Zala saw her husband standing at the side of another woman, she throw off her cape and cried out: “Stop. It’s me - Zala, your lawful wife!” Her husband recognized Zala by the wedding ring on her finger. Instead of the wedding, he and Zala cele-brated their happy reunion. This tale of Miklova Zala is a true story. Zala refused all the splendor of the pasha’s court and decided on the long and dangerous journey from Istanbul across the Balkans to Carinthia. The thought of their dear homeland helped her and her uncle to reach home. With her love for her husband and native country, Miklova Zala set a shining example for the resolute Slovenian woman. It is very useful to struggle with the habit of giving immediate expression to all of one’s unpleasant emotions. —Georges Gurdjieff Drive in - or Walk In BRONKO’S Drive-in Beverage 510 East 200th St. DMH Corp. Half of a whole is a whole of a half —Jim Rescuing an American Pilot (Continued from page 1) Homeguard post in Zalog. He was, that is to say, the corporal of this post and because of the milling of wheat and barley he was always at home. From there he telephoned the main headquarters in Polje, that hospital help was urgently needed and that both hospital orderlies respond to his mill. The Homeguards guessed the cause for some of them were already racing on bicycles that afternoon toward the Sava, when they had seen the stricken airplane. Rudi Hirschegger, municipal official and at the same time Homeguardsman, some times more the first, sometimes more to the second, started on the way with his small motorcycle. He was the first to come to Stele’s mill. He was the miller’s friend from before the war. There had existed family ties for a year. Both Homeguard male nurses came with him along with two or three soldiers to Gradišče on wheels then on foot through the meadows. When they entered the kitchen the American parachutist got scared, since they were all in military uniforms. The student male nurses tried with scanty French, which the parachutist also understood a little, to explain to him that they came to help him and not to turn him over to the Germans. The two were in a bind when they realized that they could not take care of his burns adequately. The male nurses were Uroš Roesmann, later a specialist in neuropathology and university professor in Cleveland; also by invitation he lectured in Ljubljana. The second one was Maijan Brandsteter, after the war a physician in Spain. In the conversation it became clear to all that the burned parachutist had to be taken first of all to their main post in Polje and there seek a solution. Because of the Germans, too, the pilot must leave the house immediately. Marija Orazem remembers that he was at their place, two to three hours. By agreement Hirschegger took Brash on his motorcycle to Polje, behind them others returned by the same village road through “Red” Zalog . (For several years the book, “Rdeti Zalog” (Red Zalog) has existed, which was Kardelj’s, Macek’s, Mazovec’s During the transportation, the companions protected Brash and Rudi with spotlights by shining at the homes of known OEffers (LFers - Liberation Fronters) and to confound their view. Finally they safely brought Brash to the main post in Polje, where the two male nurses cooled his bums with sterilized liquids. (R. Hirschegger: “Resnica o naši borbi”, (The Truth about our Struggle) Zbornik Svobodne Slovenije, Buenos Aires, 1966 , pp. 119-122. Here I briefly reach back into Red Zalog. Despite the November darkness some people of Zalog had noticed that at first some Homeguardsmen on bicycles had ridden past their houses towards the end of the village, towards Gradišče, and after some time returned over the same route. Perhaps at the first movement through the village the OEffers thought that the Homeguards were taking some underground LF activist to liquidation along the Ljubljanica a little past Zagradišce, which had already happened before. Likely they wondered not a little why while returning they were shining their torchlights at their houses. (To Be Continued) It’s Cool To Be Slovenian & INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM 1560 on Your A.M. She can no longer prepare a casserole all by herself. The steps are just too hard to follow. On the other hand, Hočevar still drives on short errands, but only if she can see the route in her mind. Bischof drives her to the remembering sessions. And for as long as the teacher is able to answer her calling, class will be in session every week at the ElderCenters. “Hopefully what I’m doing today will be good for the people who come next,” Hočevar said. “You just need that support. You need help.” Hočevar’s determination to carry on and live each day to the fullest “is really making an impact on Northeast Ohio,” said Matthews, the ElderCenters manager. “She uplifts us. One is Carol Hočevar as described in the newspaper article and the other is Ann Penko whose in-laws had one time operated the Silver Bar on St. Clair and E. 60th. Another fellow Slovenian who is an occasional participant there is Frank “Shmitzy” Urbančič, familiar to many as a wonderful singer for many years in Newburgh Hts., and his church. So the saying is true that when Slovenians come together, they love to sing. This we do when all four of us Slovenians are there on the same day. We can’t resist singing some Slovenian tunes as well. Several of the Center’s staff even get some of the participants onto the floor as dancing partners, especially when Gene plays those jolly polkas, at a little slower pace, of course. Keep me from getting talkative, and particularly from the false habit of thinking I must say something on every subject and on every occasion. Release me from craving to try to straighten out everybody’s affairs. Make me thoughtful, but not moody; helpful, but not bossy. With my vast store of wisdom, it seems a pity not to use it all... but thou knowest, Lord, that I want a few friends at the end. Keep my mind free from the recital of endless details; give me wings to get to the point. SEAL my lips on my many aches and pains. They are increasing, and my love of rehearsing them is becoming sweeter as the years go by. I ask for grace enough to listen to the tales of others’ pains. Help me to endure them with patience. Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally it is possible to be mistaken... that even I may be mistaken. Keep me reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a saint... some of them are hard to live with. Help me to extract all possible fun out of life. There are so many funny things around us, and I don’t want to miss any of them. Amen. The above thoughts were written by Marge Church, National Vice President of Slovenian Women’s Union. If your answer is that e-mail deals with computers of which you are totally ignorant, think again. Anyone who can figure out the letters on a typewriter keyboard will have no problems with e-mr-il.jVlany people say that Tu ^on’t need e-mail, yet when finally get it, they become almost fanatics, writing little notes to everyone. With e-mail you can keep in contact with people all around the world, from Cleveland to Slovenia to Australia, instantaneously and at almost no cost! You hate writing letters? E-mail is a letter, but most often it is a letter of only a few sentences which takes only a few minutes to write. “How are you? I’m a grandma again. Susie had a son yesterday.” Could you make a phone call giving this short message without spending at least 15 minutes on small talk? Will you have to leave your message on an answering machine or find out that you called at an inconvenient time? More importantly, you could send this message simultaneously to everyone in your address book (could be hundreds of people) with just one click, and they would all receive it within minutes! Think of all the phone calls you won’t have to make. With e-mail, you can write any time of the day or night, read incoming messages at your convenience, and best of all, keep in contact with many friends you rarely telephone or write. You get news and information, jokes and inspirational messages, and best of all, stay close to many people with a minimum of effort. So you don’t have a computer, don’t know the first thing about computers, and don’t want to risk hundreds of dollars on a gamble? Why not first try out e-mail at your local library? It’s free and if you go in the morning, there is always someone there to help you get started. Find out how easy it is, and then when you get hooked, get your own computer. You don’t need an expensive setup. Many of you have friends or relatives who are getting rid of their old computers and would be willing to give them to you for next to nothing. There is little market for old computers and printers because the technology is changing so fast, but for e-mail these computers are adequate. See if you don’t get hooked once you get your own e-mail address. Our tour director, Mimi Stibil, again has some most interesting tours planned. There will be a two day trip July 30-31 to Soaring Eagle Casino with an option to see Fred Ziwich perform in Frankenmuth. Zele 452 East 152nd Street 481-3118 Cleveland, Ohio HAPPY 90th BIRTHDAY ALICE ARKO Love/, Rosemary, Larry, Rosemarie, Lisa, Bob, and Amy St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus Church r I There is a long history of churches in Gomji JL Grad in the place of the present powerful baroque cathedral. There was a church there even before 1140, when a Benedictine monastery was founded there. In 1461, the monastery was allocated to the Ljubljana diocese, while in 1473 it was deconsecrated. The existence of the parish, later Romanesque, monastery church with a cloister, is known only from indirect sources. The Ljubljana bishops organized themselves a residence in Gomji Grad (436 meters above sea level). The place is not very far from Ljubljana. Besides the rich forests, which still form the basis of the local economy, it provided a favorable climate and the possibility for hunting. The complex was most extensively built in the period of Bishop Krištof Ravbar (1493 - 1536), who constructed an episcopal manor and surrounded the entire area with a wall, defense towers, and moat. Bishop Ernest Amadeus Attems (1743 - 1757) started extensive “Baroquisation” of the whole complex. The church and most of the walls were pulled down. Of the old church, only the bell tower from the 17th century was preserved. In 1752 a mighty church hall was constructed, including side chapels, a transversal nave, a two-pole presbytery and an oval cupola above the crossing of the naves. On the outside there is a richly diversified facade, concave in the middle, with statues by Josef Straub: Faith, Hope, and Love on top and the statue of St. Nicholas in the niche. The church is richly adorned by paintings and statues, including Andrew’s altar (1527) and the headstones of Bishop Ravbar (1527) and army leader Kacjanar (1540) made by the sculptor Osbalt Kitell. —Slovenia Weekly AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 10, 2001', AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA, MAY 10, 200 The story of Mother’s Day r a ’’the first celebrations in honor of mothers JL were held in the spring in ancient Greece. They paid tribute to Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1century, England honored mothers on “Mothering Sunday,” celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent. In the United States, Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea of Mother’s Day in 1872. Howe, who wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, saw Mother’s Day as being dedicated to peace. Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia is credited with bringing about the official observance of Mother’s Day. Her campaign to establish such a holiday began as a remembrance of her mother, who died in 1905 and who had, in the late 19^ century, tried to establish “Mother’s Friendship Days” as a way to heal the scars of the Civil War. Two years after her mother died, Jarvis held a ceremony in Grafton, W. Va., to honor her. She was so moved by the proceedings that she began a massive campaign to adopt a formal holiday honoring mothers. In 1910, West Virginia became the first state to recognize Mother’s Day. A year later, nearly every state officially marked the day. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother’s Day as a national holiday to be held on the second Sunday of May. Today, because and despite Jarvis’ efforts, many celebrations of Mother’s Days are held throughout the world. Although they do not all fall at the same time, such countries as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia and Belgium also celebrate Mother’s Day on the same day as the United States. i---------------------------------------------------1 i Chicken with Pears \ An easy way to make an elegant fruit sauce. No. 19 May 10, 2001 Čigava je država? Mesec cvetja, veselja in petja. To soboto, 12. maja, priredi pevski zbor Korotan svoj letni koncert. ■ . ; > i t'' ' ) > - ■ ~ ■ Berceta, umetnice Bare Remec in mons. Orehaija, prijatelja Pavleta Ranta in Milana Langusa. Primerjanje prejšnjih izdaj z najnovejšo odkriva proces prehajanja v novo obdobje ob odmiranju stare generacije. Študijo so objavili v španščini moji strokovni prijatelji v Buenos Airesu. Nekaj podobnega bi moral ponovno napraviti, a bom delo prepustil “mladi generaciji”. Slovenski telefonski imenik vsebuje tudi naslove in sezname slovenskih predstavništev po svetu, izbrane naslove slovenskih župnij in društev, ob koncu tudi imenike slovenskih podjetij v Velikem Buenos Airesu. Cleveland je premalo zastopan. V seznamu ni Ameriške domovine in slovenskih župnij, Toronto je bolj predstavljen. Bogato nudila nam je veselje, to resnične bile so nje želje. O: Božala bi rada tvoje zgubano lice, poljubila bi rada tvoje solzno oko. Prelepi so spomini nate, mati, takrat zame časi bili so zlati. V homeopatskih dozah deluje torej zdavilno. Zamislite si človeka, sotrpina. Bil je z Dolenjskega. Nevzdržne razmere doma so ga pognali v svet. Toda leta so ga izčrpala. “Kde jo vidim, tam joj pravim: Micka dober den.” In ponoči mački prečkajo cesto, če iščete Micko. Vstopnice bodo tudi ob vhodu do sedmih zvečer. Uglaševanje zbora je bilo letos zelo kratko. Pevovodju smo povzročili nekaj sivih las. Vse bo dobro, če bo konec dober. F.K. Služba z ljudmi mu je najbrž vzela voljo in čas za nadaljnje pisanje in raziskovanje. Cleveland, 10. maja 2001 Mednarodni tokovi mariborske univerze Miroslav Slana-Miros Preden predstavimo Univerzo Maribor ob njeni 25. obletnici, ko se tvorno odpira v evropski in svetovni intelektualni prostor pod rektorskim vodstvom prof. dr. (216) 481-5277 Veen Chardon Rd. Ob praznovanju 25-letnice Univerze Maribor so ta krog v Mariboru sklenili s 14. mednarodno konferenco o visokem šolstvu, posvečeno etiki v znanosti. Razvejana raziskovalna dejavnost Univerza Maribor prilagaja študij evropskim standardom. Okvirni program na področju znanosti odseva znanstvene in tehnološke prioritete v določenem časovnem obdobju glede na politične razmere v Evrop- (dalje na str. 16) Dr. ANTON JAMNIK Toronto, Kanada Sprava: proces osvobajanja in dejanje poguma Slavnostni govor na občnem zboru Kanadskega slovenskega kongresa 25. marca 2001 v Torontu, Kanada - III. del - ♦ 3. “Odpuščanje in usmiljenje sta moralni vrlini le v na- V ljubeč spomin ob peti obletnici smrti naše drage mame, stare mame in prastare mame Ivanka Stipičevič umrla 11. maja 1996. Ostaja grenkoba in razočaranje. 15) Happy Mother’s Day! Sv. Pavel opisuje takšno stanje, ko pravi: “Saj ne tazumem niti tega, kar de-tani; ne delam namreč te-Sa> kar hočem, temveč ponujam to, kar sovražim.. Jaz nesrečnež! Kdo me bo rešil tega telesa, ki je zapisno smrti?” (Rim 7,15.24). Jezusova ljubezen gre do konca in prav to pomeni neke vrste ozdravljenje človeštva. Medsebojno priznanje in sprejemanje more storjeno krivico spremeniti in napraviti za trden temelj obnovljenih odnosov. Prav lepo pozdravljam vse sodelavce MZA, go. Marico Lavrišo, go. Mary Coffelt, g. Jožeta Goleta, go. Mimi Martinčič, go. Danico Ančimer in še vse ostale neimenovane dobrotnike. Vam in vsem še poznanim želim blagoslovljeni postni čas in velikonočne praznike. Bog z Vami!” Misijonar Fr. Francis Rebol s Tajvana piše: “Pozdrave s Tajvana. Želim vam vsem “Happy Easter”. Naj vstali Kristus prinese zdravja na duši in telesu zadovoljstva. Želim vam, da bi vživali veliki žegen: pirhe in slovenske potice in veselo Alelujo. Srčna zahvala za vso vašo materialno pomoč in posebno za molitve. Bog vas vse blagoslovi.” Vsekakor Vamin MZA izrekam velik Bog plačaj in vsem dobrotnikom. Sonja Ferjan 79 Lunness Rd. Toronto, Ont.
