- tolaži nas, Gospod, v naši majhnosti in omejenosti. First Reading Isaiah 40:1-5. 9-11 The prophet Isaiah announces that God's glory is about to be revealed, and calls on the people to prepare for it. Second Reading 2 Peter 3:8-14 The followers of Jesus are called to lead holy and good lives while waiting for the new heavens and new earth, where righteousness rules. Gospel Mark 1:1-8 The first verses of Mark's Gospel announce the "beginning of the Good News" of Jesus Christ, and tell of the witness of John the Baptist. 'The beginning of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God." Illustration In September 2013, a Catholic parish in Tottenham, north London, became the latest parish in England and Wales to receive a Livesimply parish award. Around two hundred parishioners of St John Vianney, West Green, attended a special Mass and celebration where the award was given. They received a plaque, made from recycled wood, which carried the words "Living simply, sustainably, and in solidarity with the poor". Parish work towards the award started two years earlier with a parish audit. Then, over two years, individual parishioners signed up to live more sustainably, reduce their energy use and walk to church. They supported local charity shops, undertook not to waste food, and started growing fruit and vegetables in their gardens and on church property. The parish marked Fairtrade Fortnight, 396 | VESTNIK 2014 and supported a homeless project in central London and the Catholic Worker House in north London that serves homeless refugees. In the aftermath of the 2012 Tottenham riots, the Livesimply group worked with local community groups to build peace and harmony in the area. The Livesimply prayer was said on the first Sunday of each month. Parish priest Father Joe Ryan commented, "This is only the beginning of an ongoing programme to reduce the parish carbon footprint and develop our mission to serve people in need and protect God's creation." Gospel Teaching From the very start of Mark's Gospel, we are left in no doubt about the mission of Jesus and his disciples. Mark paints a vivid picture of an imperfect world into which a prophet, eating locusts and honey, and dressed in animal skins, suddenly emerges to announce a coming change. The people flock to see John the Baptist because they know that the world needs to change. John clearly understands this struggle, but he acknowledges that it is not one that he can accomplish himself. John is the messenger who announces the coming of one much greater than himself, one who is strong enough to tackle the world and its powers head-on. The person is Jesus, and he will change the world for ever. Not only is Jesus stronger than John, but he also brings a more powerful baptism. Jesus will baptise his disciples with the Holy Spirit, so that they will be equipped to bring about the peace and justice for which humanity has waited so long. It is fascinating that none of the traditional elements of the Christmas story have their origins in Mark's Gospel. There are no angels, shepherds or kings. There is no mention of a star in the sky, Mary and Joseph, or even the baby Jesus. For Mark, the real issue is the radical breakthrough to the new world of the Good News, which Jesus would later describe as the kingdom of God. Mark makes it clear that Jesus is the Messiah and the Son of God. People are drawn to John the Baptist from far and wide to hear this momentous news. Application John lived what he preached. By his lifestyle, his dress and his eating habits, he showed that the meaning of life is not to be found in the abundance of material possessions but in relationship with God. Simplicity of life and detachment from unnecessary cares and worries about social life free the heart for a personal relationship with God. In this season of Advent the Church extends to us the call of John the Baptist to repent and confess our sins in preparation for the one who is to come. It is an opportunity to rediscover our hope and trust in God and to let go of false hopes and securities. It is a time for revisiting our life plans, relationships and priorities. Everything that follows from the opening sentence of today's Gospel - the whole adventure of Jesus among us - marks a new beginning, the beginning of the Good News. Let us reflect upon some new beginnings for ourselves. Consider projects and opportunities that permit us to evaluate our priorities and renew our Christian commitment and what it means for us in the actions of our daily lives. What about projects we can undertake as members of a Christian community? Any parish can undertake a number of these, like the Livesimply parish award. As today's Gospel shows us, the historical coming of Jesus enjoyed a time of preparation. We too are given this time of preparation in the lead-up to Christmas. Celebrating Advent fully can help us to use this time well for repentance and renewal.
