»Kaj naj storim, da bom deležen večnega življenja?« (Mr 10,17b)
Evangelist nam predstavi usodo Mesija, ki ne odrešuje z zmagoslavjem in oblastjo, temveč po trpljenju in ločitvi. Jezus vabi učenca, da zapusti svoje posvetne načrte. Zato danes nadaljuje z drugim delom, kjer govori o bogastvu in kaj pomeni biti učenec. Prav v zvezi z zahtevo o nujnosti ločitve od bogastva Jezus poveličuje sijaj in veselje čiste podaritve za apostolsko službo. Če kdo poseduje obilje gmotnih dobrin, so te kakor neprehoden zaslon, ki preprečuje spreobrnjenje in hojo za Kristusom; le čudež, ki ga povzroči božja milost, kateri ni nič nemogoče more tudi bogatega iztrgati iz njegove človeške in duhovne bede in ga povesti na pot, ki jo je začrtal trpeči in revni Jezus.
Zanimivo je videti v pogovoru med Petrom in Jezusom, potem ko se je poklic bogatega ponesrečil, kako Peter uporablja izraza zapustiti in iti za in s tem namiguje na poklic na obali Genezareškega jezera. Jezus pa Petrov stavek popravi s tem, da postavi skupaj glagola »zapustiti« in »prejeti«. Če peščico zemeljskih resničnosti darujemo Kristusu, to ne pomeni njihovega uničenja, ampak šele dobijo pravo vrednost. Kar kdo daruje, to spet najde povišano, obogateno in pomnoženo. Globoko veselje, splošno dobro počutje, varnost in nepričakovan mir postanejo »zdaj, v tem času« trajna dediščina tistega, ki se je izpraznil vsake navezanosti in imetja, da je vanj lahko vdrl Kristus in njegov evangelij.
Ko evangelist Marko govori o nagradi doda besedam »stokrat toliko« besedo »skupaj s pregnjanji«. In prav to učenca razlikuje od drugih ljudi. V svoji notranji podobi je do kraja upodobljen po svojem Učitelju. »Če so preganjali mene, bodo preganjali tudi vas« (Jn 15,20). Preganjanje in to, da jim svet nasprotuje, torej postaneta drugi kriterij za verodostojnost učenčeve poklicanosti in učinkovitosti njegovega poslanstva. »Kdor mene zaničuje in ne sprejema mojih besed, ima nad seboj sodnika; beseda, ki sem jo govoril, ta ga bo sodila poslednji dan« (Jn 12,48).

Preparations for our Jubilee Anniversary as a Catholic Women's League are in full swing.

SREČANJE BOLNIKOV IN STAREJSIH_
Že vrsto let Slomškovo oltarno društvo povabi, enkrat na leto, bolne in starejše k sveti maši med katero lahko prejmejo zakrament bolniškega maziljenja. Zadnja leta imamo kar stalni datum, namreč sreda po zahvalnem dnevu, ki ga v Kanadi praznujemo drugi ponedeljek v oktobru. Letošnje srečanje je bilo 10. oktobra. Najprej smo se, ob 11h dopoldne, zbrali k sveti maši. Prisluhnili smo besedam papeža Frančiščka, ki jih vsako leto napiše za Svetovni dan bolnikov (11. feb.). Tema letošnjega dneva je vzeta iz Janezovega evangelija, ko Jezus iz križa reče materi Mariji in učencu Janezu: »Žena, glej, tvoj sin! ... Glej, tvoja mati! In od tiste ure jo je učenec vzel k sebi« (Jn 19,26-27).
Po maši so članice SOD, Jožica Vegelj, Pamela Gosgnach in Rosemary Šušteršič, pripravile v atriju pogostitev za vse navzoče. Ob prijateljskem klepetu in druženju smo zaključili naše srečanje. Hvala vsem za lep dan in vso požrtvovalnost.

We speak today of the gap between the Church and secular society, but it is nothing new. Once the Church became an accepted part of society under the Roman Empire, the first monks or desert fathers fled civilisation to explore their life with God in the wilderness. Then in the sixth century St Benedict was sent from his country town of Norcia in Umbria, Italy, to pursue his studies in Rome. He found the city so disturbing and decadent that he fled back to Subiaco in the deepest wilderness and developed his life of prayer and community life there. In similar fashion Blessed Charles de Foucauld in the late nineteenth century left his life in the army, became a priest but then left a comfortable life in France to go to live with the Tuareg in the Sahara in Algeria. There he would eventually be assassinated by bandits and is considered a martyr by the

Church. Both are remembered by the communities they founded, which would go on to expand throughout the world.
A different approach was taken by St Philip Neri, who in the sixteenth century would be called the "apostle of Rome". At a time when Rome was demoralised he brought together a group of young men for worship and also to bring aid to pilgrims and sick people. He used humanity and humour to disarm his opponents, and he was one of the first to help lay people discover their Christian life in their secular occupations.
Gospel Teaching
Today's Gospel comes from a chapter of Mark that is concerned with how to live a good and truthful life in the real world. Jesus discusses marriage and children, property and possessions, power and privilege. The children are perhaps the keystone to understanding his teaching. His disciples try to send the children away, but Jesus rebukes them, takes the children into his arms and blesses them - for of such are the kingdom of God. Just as the chapter will end with the story of the blind beggar, Barti-maeus, who becomes the image of true disciple-ship, so the children, who are powerless and insignificant in the eyes of society, become the image of those who understand and practise the presence of God in the world.
But the man who then runs up and kneels before Jesus is the image of one who is too rich and powerful to make this move. He undoubtedly has the potential; but he cannot overcome the obstacle of his wealth. This exchange upsets the disciples, for they have been conditioned to believe that wealth is a sign of God's love and approval. If it is as hard as Jesus suggests, however, for a rich person to enter the kingdom, how can anyone achieve it? Jesus re-
assures them in two ways. First of all, what is impossible for humans is not impossible for God. Secondly, those who, like his disciples, give up everything for him will receive overwhelming recompense both now and in eternity. The message remains clear: to become like little children in their powerlessness is the way to God's favour.
Application
The solution of the Church in the Middle Ages to the problem of the disparity between rich and poor Christians was to instruct the rich to use what was over and above their needs to benefit those less fortunate than themselves. But this does not quite express what Jesus is saying in the Gospel. Just as Jesus asks his disciples for their full commitment to him, so here he invites the rich young man to strip himself of his wealth and follow him. Down through the ages many rich young people have listened to these words and responded by leaving their world of luxury in pursuit of Christ, as, for example, the saints we mentioned earlier.
Our ability to make such a full response, to become such a disciple, is modelled on the image of the little child. It is not a call to behave childishly. Rather it is a call to live out a life based on vulnerability and insignificance, as one of those who don't matter from a worldly viewpoint. If we are too worried about our image in the eyes of others, if we are too dependent on what the world can offer us as prizes, we will struggle to understand this calling. If we are unworried about our image and have a certain freedom in relation to worldly goods and rewards, we have made the first move.

Sv. Gregorij Veliki - Prestava na odru
On October 28th after 9:30am Mass, we will be hosting Jože Ekart here in our parish hall. There will be a short theatrical/comedy performance of a skit titled: "Večerja za Enega" - "Supper for one", featuring Jože Ekart and Manja Vinko. Following this skit, there will be a short book presentation "Kje je moj mili dom" written by Jože Ekart.
Our morning presentation will begin at 11:00 a.m. with coffee, tea and light refreshments in the upper hall, the cost for all this is only $10/person. We hope to see you there!

Bishop Crosby, OMI, has invited the Canadian Canon Law Society to the Diocese of Hamilton for its 53rd Annual Convention. Canon Lawyers serve the Church in Bishops' offices, marriage tribunals, seminaries, universities and religious orders. They are Priests and lay people, women and men. Most of the Canon Lawyers in Canada will attend this convention in Hamilton. The high point of this convention will be the celebration of the Eucharist at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2018 at the historic St. Mary's Pro-Cathedral Church, 146 Park Street North, Hamilton.
