CARDINAL GUSHING BLESSES NEW KENNEDY GRAVE
WASHINGTON — Forecasting that generations will visit the spot to ‘be close to his greatness which once we knew,” Richard Cardinal Cushing of Boston blessed the permanent grave of the late President John F. Kennedy at the new granite memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
Attending the early morning( March 15) ceremonies during a heavy rainfall were Kennedy’s successor, President Lyndon B. Johnson, Mrs. Jacqueline Kennedy, and other members of the Kennedy family.
The ceremonies followed an unannounced move of the late president’s body from the temporary grave a few yards away which it had occupied since his assassination in November, 1963. Moved also were the bodies of two Kennedy infants previously reinterred alongside their father.
The new Kennedy grave, as the temporary one, is on a hillside in Arlington National Cemetery across the Potomac River from Washington and overlooks a large part of the city.

CLEVELAND’S COMBINED BRANCHES ARE BACK TO WORK
The Combined Branches of Cleveland have resumed activity after a rest of two months. We had a delightful attendance and an enjoyable meeting. All gave good reports.
Our topic discussion was oil the Convention in May, which is almost here. How about it? Are you ready for the trip members? Have you thought about your reservations? If not, hurry, hurry!

fi 4th NATIONAL CONVENTION REPORTS
Report of the Supreme President
Slovenian Women’s Union of America held the first National Convention in Chicago, Illinois on November 6. 1927 and the 14th National Tri-ennial Convention will l>e held 40 years later, May 24-28, 1967 in Washington, L). C. The Washington Hilton Hotel will be the site of the Convention Meetings which begin Thursday. This will be another history for our Zveza as it is the first time a Slovenian organization convenes at the Nation’s Capital.
Every national convention is important and the coming convention will be justly so. The convention is the place where delegates can voice their opinions and view points of common interest to all. The By-laws will be reviewed and we will retain sections which have proven to be advantageous and revise those which are not practical any longer.
Delegates must never forget their duty, that they are representatives who hold sacred the trust imposed upon them by the members of their branches. Your members deserve the best and most sincere results.
The Credential Committee will be the first to function at the 14th National Convention and this committee will meet Wednesday evening before the dinner hour as well as Thursday before the first Convention session. We hope the delegates will have everything in order to save this committee time and work.
My second term as national president has passed very last. It was a great pleasure to work with the officers and members as they all have co-operated 100% with me. I contributed articles for publication every month that you were able to read telling of all the services that 1 have performed for the progress of the Union.
Reports from the Supreme Auditors and also the State of Illinois Insurance Examiners find that all the bookkeeping is in perfect order which means that the Supreme Secretary and Supreme Treasurer as well as the Finance Board have fulfilled their duties faithfully.
State Presidents have also been performing their work efficiently and are very important to our Union as they are the ones who contact the members in their respective states to hold the state conventions. Here the delegates read their reports and hold their business meeting for the year, which is a great asset to our organization.
Campaigns that have been held in the past three years have brought in 894 new members. We are fortunate that we are able to replace some of the large number we are losing through death.
Tours which have been sponsored by our Union have all been very well represented and educational. They are the annual tour to Europe and Slovenia, the Canadian Shrine tours and pilgrimages to Lemont, 111. and other religious shrines.
Annual bowling tournaments are also held and they have been very successful. The Eastern Get-together Tournament held in the Cleveland area was composed of 100 bowlers and the 31st annual Midwest Bowling Tournament held in Chicago this year brought out 150 bowlers and 20 juniors.
Last year, a team of 100 baton twirlers between the ages of 4 and 17 years were organized in Cleveland and Euclid, Ohio. They have participated in many parades and are looking forward to performing at the Convention in Washington, D. C. A very active branch in the Union is Br. 50 of Cleveland. In this branch they have the Marie Prisland Cadets, the Gay Nineties group, and the Beatles. These ladies have performed at several occasions. All the tours, group activities and social events have been held to bring great Inspiration and life into the organization.
Our monthly magazine, Zarja-The Dawn, is giving you a full report of all the business and activities that have been performed each month by the officers, branches and members. The Editor is doing a fine job editing this
Attention Supreme Officers and Delegates
A display of handwork will be held at the National Convention in Washington, D. C., May 24-28. These articles will then be sold and the proceeds placed in our Scholarship Fund.
1 am appealing to the Supreme Officers and the delegates to bring to the Convention at least one piece of nice handwork for the display, and for the sale. The members of the Washington branch will be kind enough to make the arrangements for the display and supervise the sale of the donated articles.

OIJR ILLUSTRIOUS SENATOR
The Honorable Frank J. Lausche United States Senator from Ohio
One of the ablest and most respected statesmen in the United States government is our countryman, Frank J. Lausche, whose career in the highest public offices spans nearly half a centtury.
Clevelanders and Ohioans alike know and esteem Senator Lausche as their former Mayor of Cleveland, five-time elected Governor of Ohio and now, as their senator for 10 years.
He has distinguished himself by his fervent dedication to the spirit of democracy and with '‘common sense” by which he challenges all matters affecting the present-day economic, governmental and moral conditions. Though self-effacing as a person, he always represents a convincing and effective stand, battling to preserve the freedom and wellbeing of our country.
We are privileged that Senator Lausche will address the 14th National S.W.U. Convention at the Grand Banquet on Saturday, May, 27, 1967.
ACTIVITIES
No. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. — Our
last meeting was held on Feb. 16th at St. John’s Hall. The coming convention in Washington, D. C. was discussed and it looks as though we may have quite a few members attending. More complete details and decisions will be made at the coming meeting. Some too, are thinking of making the July trip to Canada as well.
Start cleaning your closets, drawers, cabinets and putting aside the things you no longer can wear or need, as we plan to have a rummage sale in the near future. Most likely that date will be next month. It’s a good way to swell the treasury and rid yourself of things which usually are packed away collecting dust.
It was also decided to put aside the usual May date for a Mass for all living and deceased members of Ženska Zveza and do so in October instead when we will be celebrating our 40th anniversary. Please keep that month in mind as we want it to be a real success. We still are looking for a suitable place with an opening for October as we would like to extend the invitation to all the branches to help us celebrate. If you know of a sizeable hall, let us know soon so that we can make plans early enough.
On January 29th the lodge held a card party at St. John’s Hall and all prizes were donated by the women who attended the Dec. meeting. A number of these same women brought some good, home-made strudel, doughnuts, potica and other bakery along to further the profits. Father Okorn dropped in and so did some of his parishioners from his new parish and they enjoyed eating the good strudel and coffee which was being sold to help bring the profit to $180.00 for the new St. John’s church. Thanks to those who gave their own services and help to make it all possible.
Our best wishes for a return to good health to Mrs. Cmiklas and Mis. M. Korpnick, both of whom were guests at St. Luke’s Hospital. Do hope everything is done to make you well again really soon.
Good wishes and congratulations go to Mary Evanich, our recording secretary and her husband on their 25th wedding anniversary. May you live to celebrate a golden anniversary, too.
The happy celebrant treated all those present at the meeting with a delicious cake and coffee after which most women enjoyed a few games. As for me, I was too busy trying to learn about finances, statements, taking in dues and getting a few facts from the former treasurer, Theresa

No. 14, Euclid, O. Our meeting in March wasn’t as well attended as we had hoped. This was our 3 month birthday party and our dear hostesses, Mary Smerdel and Jennie Vidovič really outdid themselves. Everything was delicious and we thank you, ladies. Hostesses for the April meeting will be Margaret Ivec and Frances Plut.
Sunday, April 16th is the date set for our dinner to be held at Lapp’s Farm in Geneva, Ohio. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Br. 14 and we are hoping to really celebrate.
We are also planning a card party for Sunday, Oct. 22nd so, please ladies, keep that date in mind and I will keep mentioning it in the future Zarja raticles.

No. 20, Joliet, III. Our condolences to the bereaved family of Thomas Pavnica, age 52 years, who passed a-way so suddenly. By trade, he was a building contractor and well-known in our community. He is survived by his wife Catherine, nee Vlasich, also he is mourned by his mother-in-law, Mrs. Mary Vlasich who is now convalescing at the Americana Nursing Home. His two sisters-in-law are also our members, Mrs. Mary Spelich and Theresa Pavnica (our bowler and reporter). There are brothers and sisters, too. He was buried from St. Joseph’s church to St. Joseph’s cemetery.
The Terlep family mourns the passing of their brother, John Terlep, the proprietor of the C and C Tavern on Cass St. Among the sisters and brothers who survive him are a sister, Mrs. Rose Semrov, our member for a long time and a son. He was buried from St. Joseph’s church to the Woodlawn cemetery for his last resting place.
May they both rest in peace!
We lost a member of long standing,
Mrs. Frances Kerne, residing on No. Broadway whose husband passed a-way many years ago. She joined on Jan. 16, 1933, recommended by Mrs. Mary Panian. She was a member for 33 years. Mrs. Kerne was born in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, and is survived by two daughters and several sons, nephews and nieces. She was buried from St. Joseph’s church and taken to the church cemetery where members and friends escorted her to her last place of rest. Mrs. Kerne was a member of several societies. May she rest in peace!
On the sick list we still have our member, Rose Jagodnik; Je<an Tezak was kept in intensive care for a lengthy time and Mrs. Catherine Zadel returned home from the hospital where she underwent surgery. Mrs. Florence Valli, the daughter of Mrs. Jennie Benedick, Miss Catherine Butala, sister of our pastor, Msgr. M. J. Butala, and Mrs. Anna Furlin are better now and are at home. Mrs. Mary Jerman is still at the Pleasant Home Nursing Center and many others are ill at home but not known to this reporter.
May they all get well on the road to recovery soon. Our secretary remembers all our sick members with a card in behalf of the branch.
Two junior members, Charmaine Marie Gruenwald, granddaughter of Mrs. Frances Petrovčič, and Debrah Lyn Ariagno, granddaughter of Mrs. Mary Kunstek were enrolled into our branch.
IMPORTANT TO OUR MEMBERS! Our secretary, Frances, has complained that in many cases when the husband dies first, the member does not change the name of her beneficiary, and at the time of death, there are difficulties as the benefit is paid to the funeral director. It is up to you members to take care of this at once for your own benefit
The three books that were mailed to branches from Irene Planinšek, President of Br. 103, which branch was organized by her, were sold at our meeting. The money is to go to help the newly organized branch to finance many needed projects. Hope she does as well with the other branches. The prize, the afghan, was hand-made by her mother, Mrs. Emma Planinšek.
From Anaheim, Arizona, have come greetings from Mrs. Theresa Koleto a visitor there to see her sons.
At our last meeting the election of delegates came to order. Representing our branch for the Convention at Washington, D. C. will be Emma Planinšek, president and Josephine Erjavec. Our Slovenian Legislator
Hon. John A. Blatnik, M. C. of Minnesota
A senior Congressman in the U. S. House of Representatives is the Honorable John A. Blatnik, beloved “favorite son” of our Minnesotans on the Iron Range.
He has served his people well by giving them his constant vigilance on matters that concern the economy of the upper Minnesota mining regions and has initiated legislation to give new life’s-blood of employment to dislocated miners of that area.
A man of great charm, Blatnik loves his association with people and his appearances are always very exciting.
He will be one of our most honored escorts in Washington when lie joins us for the White House tour, at the Capitol and with his lovely wife, as a special guest at the Grand Banquet.

Mary Jo is currently playing the lead at St. Frances Academy play and is one of the brilliant students there and Rosann, who won the Zveza scholarship a few years ago, is a student at St. Frances College in research work and is also at the Western Laboratories at Ottawa, 111., doing fine work. They are the nieces of our treasurer, Josephine Sumic. Congratulations to all the family.

Dawn Club held a card party Feb. 15th at the church hall. The winners were Mrs. Leo Erchull, Mrs. Emil Neimi, Mrs. Arvid Larson and Mrs. Fred Kotchevar. A delicious dessert and coffee lunch was served by the committtee 111 charge.

No. 25, Cleveland, O. At this writing we are preparing to bowl the following day in our tournament Sunday, March 5th. Br. 25 is having two teams also some of our members intermixed with other branches. That’s what we say is real teamwork!
The card party of Sat. March lltli, was anticipated also; we will try to make it successful by getting together our hard-working committee.
Delegates have been appointed to go to Washington in May for the convention. I’ve just come back from Chicago where the auditing meeting was held. The Supreme Board manages well in handling finances for the interest of S.W.U. organization.
The most important and major concern is to get new members, so — please ladies if you have any prospect, use your friendly persuasion to recruit them.
We are sorry to hear that our Queen Nettie Malnar’s husband Lewis has been ill. Wishing him good health from all the ladies.
Meetings are held on every second Monday of each month. If you page through the Zarja you will find many interesting up and coming activities. In the current news are plans for that wonderful trip to Washington. Get a few friends together, make reservations and go!
We are happy to see that Josephine Ambrosic is feeling fine and attending the meetings. She and her sister Mary Orazem are our meeting “specials”, always helping to make things more pleasurable. Jennie Feme is a “must” to us giving the best assistance available. Josephine Golinski works wonders for Br. 25 serving with a smile the refreshments we enjoy. Now Molly Dezelan really “takes the cake” what I mean “brings the cake!” Always has her arms full of baked goods donations for our group. Thanks, ladies, for your kindnesses and to' all the other members who help in any way to make us happy.

Deepest sympathy to the Frank Golobic family on the loss of their husband and father, Frank, who after a very long illness passed away 011 Feb. 11th. Also, our sympathy to the Mihelčič (Basa) families on the loss of their mother, Christine who passed away on Feb. 12th Mrs. Mihelčič was a member of long standing, since 1929. No. 32, Euclid, Ohio. With the holy season of Lent over, we wish you had a happy and blessed Easter. With the new season of spring and warm weather, we hope you will all be able to attend our meetings. These winter meetings had poor attendance being so cold and mostly slippery. Now, winter is behind us, so, let’s try to come to meetings in this new year to find out what’s going on. This is a reminder and an invitation to our May meeting, dedicated to mothers and birthday party combined. After the meeting, we always have delicious home baked pastry and refreshments.
Our Mother-of-the-Year is Josephine Comenshek, our secretary. Somehow Frances Klune wasn’t mentioned last time but we’d like to thank her now for the delicious potica she baked for our Christmas party. Sorry, Sorry, Frances for omitting your name last time.
To mention Theresa Potokar became grandma for the 21st time when a baby girl was born to Isabelle and Thomas Potokar. Christine Ann was born Feb. 24th, Congratulations to grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Anton Potokar and Mr. & Mrs. Di-Bartolomeo.
We hope Mary Vodichar is feeling much better as she fell and broke her wrist. She was our good helper always in the kitchen. Also, Mary Grze hurt her arm from a fall on the Ice. We hope they will both be with us soon. Mrs. Gerjevic was on the sick list and her husband had a serious oepration, now he is home so we pray that good health comes to both of them really soon.
Angela Barkovich’s husband, John, was seriously ill in the hospital and we hope and pray that he is much better by now and all our shut-ins who are ill the same. We ask our Blessed Mother for their good health and good cheer.

Supreme President’s Message
The first Board of Directors’ Meeting this year was held Feb. 27-28, 1967. Present were all officers. Two days were very busy with preparation for our coming Convention.
We have decided to have a few extra committees for the Convention so that more business will be taken care of in good order. Our time will be very limited.
The Auditors checked all records, bonds and found all in the best order.
Thanks to Liz Zefran for the lovely lunch she and her daughter prepared for us and served at the office; this way we saved time and kept on working.
Founder, Marie Prisland was present and is looking very well. Hope she stays well and will be with us for many more years to come.
Convention Notes
Notice to all Supreme Officers and Delegates!
All Supreme Officers and delegates are asked to bring one new member’s application each to the Convention. Please do not disappoint us; just one new member will not be hard to enroll. Please give the application blank and your name to Liz Zefran of Chicago as she has been appointed to take care of this special project.
The trip for excursioners from Cleveland to the Capital City will be by Greyhound Bus. The bus will leave from the St. Clair National Home at 10:30 p. m. on Tuesday, May 23,1967. If there are any passengers from the Collinwood and Euclid areas, the bus will pick up those passengers at 10:45 p. m. at E. 185th and Neff Rd., at the Pick & Pay Store.
We will travel 4y2 hours and stop for a short time, then proceed thru to Washington, D. C., arriving at 7 a. m. Wednesday, May 24th.
This schedule was necessary so that we get in for the entire Wednesday activity and room assignment at the Hotel in the afternoon. No rooms are available on Tuesday.
All Delegates from Ohio and visitors, please send in your reservations now. The hotel reservations will be made for you when we know that you are definitely going. Don’t wait but decide now as we will not be able to accept any last minute reservations. We wish to accommodate every one and hope that you will co-operate with us. Call or see your secretary, Mary Bostian or yours truly for reservations on the bus.
Round trip fare from Cleveland is $15.25. Hotel rates for two people in a room at $10 and up each. A few rooms are available for three persons (triple) at $7.00 each.
We are also planning a weekend excursion bus from Cleveland for those who wish to spend two days in Washington, Saturday and Sunday. This bus will depart from Cleveland late Friday, May26th and arrive that night. Accommodations at the hotel will be the same as above and for our juniors who will be making the trip, a student rate for rooms at $6 each will prevail. The bus tare will be the same for the weekend group. A full program of activities will be arranged for the weekenders.

Every Convention has this extra feature and that is the Hand-work Exhibit for the .W.U.	Scholarship Fund. All	delegates and	officers	are
asked to bring items	of hand work for the	display. Many	of you	will
find beautiful things in the collection to buy and take back home with you.
We hope you will all be able to co-operate in this venture as the proceeds go towards the Scholarship Fund which as you know, was the first such Fund started by a Slovenian organization to help our youth. Our Founder, Mrs. Prisland, and many officers have guided this Fund into a profitable treasury for this good purpose. She has been taking personal care of it for many years and	now the Fund	must be re
plenished from time	to time. Make this a	wholehearted	effort!	All

No. 34, Soudan, Minn. There was a good turnout of members for the February meeting of Branch 24 in spite of the cold weather outside— 30 degrees below zero. We held the meeting in the Parish Hall immediately after Lenten devotions in our church. Mrs. John Pahula presided. Mrs. Mary Pahula read the letter stating we should elect a delegate for the National Convention in Washington. With no opposition, Mrs. Mary Pahula was elected. However, since we are grouped with Branches 35 and
39	we won’t know who the official delegate will be until we are notified from Headquarters.
Mrs. Pahula also distributed booklets to be awarded for the Convention and members will be working on that project, hoping to make a good a-mount for our Branch. A short preliminary discussion was held also, regarding Minnesota Day in September at which time our Branch will be "Host” to the Minnesota Branches.
A social hour followed with prizes going to Mmes.William Lilya, Anthony Yapel, Joseph Gornick and John Pa hula. Mrs. Lilya also was awarded the attendance prize, which was donated by Mrs. Nick Tekautz. Mrs. Herman Mesojedec and Mrs. Victor Chiabotti served a delicious lunch before we departed for home. The tables were decorated in a Valentine motif.
Our March meeting was held on the 15th and hostesses were: Mrs. Louis Chiabotti and Mrs. Ramon Berg. Mrs. William Vollendorf donated the attendance prize.
Thv. meeting was concluded with prayer and a special remembrance made of our deceased member, Mrs. Barbara Schweiger who passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital on Febr. 3rd at the age of 83 years. She had been hospitalized for exactly one year. May God grant her, and all deceased members of SWU, eternal rest!

No. 38, Chisholm, Minn. Greetings from Chisholm to all Zveza members. We had our election of delegate and alternate at the February meeting and sixty members were present. There wasn’t a vacant seat any where. How about that? We are so proud to announce we elected our new vice-president, sister Sylvia Pe-trich as delegate to the Convention in Washington D. C. on May 24 to 28th and our alternate is sister Anna Trdan, secretary and treasurer who has given 36 years of service to this branch as secretary
Sister Sylvia Petrich is also a very diligent worker not only at our branch but all circles and lodges when called upon. So. congratulations Sylvia and Anna.
The tickets are really selling and our fine president deserves honors for believe it or not, she alone sold 100 tickets by herself. Congratulations, Frances, and thanks for such u fine job well done. The winners will be announced at the Convention. We’re sure to have a substantial fund to add to our treasury plus the convention expenses.
Our meetings are well conducted
by our diligent president and worker. Frances who has been for many years active with us and will continue to be. We are proud of you, Frances.
We are also busy on the afghan project and hope we reach our quota. Thanks to sister Emma Planinšek, mother of the president of Br. 102 in Washington, for donating the lovely afghan prizes. Tickets are due May 1st.

bakery and fun with the games. Prize was brought by Mary Hočevar and we all joined in to wish her a very Happy Birthday.
At this meeting, we are happy to announce that Mrs. Frances Tomsio was selected to be our Mother of the Year. We will pay tribute to this fine mother on May 28th at the 10:00 o’clock Mass at St. Lawrence church when we will receive Holy Communion in a body for the deceased and living members of our lodge.
We hope that at our next meeting on April 26th all the members will attend as the final details for the May event must be worked out.
Best wishes for a return to good health are sent to Julia Sneller and Donna Stubler who are recovering from recent surgery.
Happy to be home from the hospital and feeling much better is Julia Lipnos; Paula Hribar is also well once again after her short illness.
Congratulations and best wishes for many happy returns of the day to Josephine Stavec who celebrated her 80th birthday on Feb. 27, 1967. We all wish her God’s continued blessings so that we may enjoy Josephine’s society for many more years.

We extend our sincere sympathy to member, Jennie Perko on the loss of her grandson, T. Perko, only 20 years old who gave his life serving our country in Viet Nam.
To escape the bitter winter, Ann Dragovich flew to Puerto Rico to be with her daughter, Wilma and to enjoy the beautiful sunshine they have there. Have a nice time, Ann!

Things are getting back to normal a-round our fair city (you can even see the ground again), so the Chicago S.W.U. bowling league can forget about the weather and concentrate on bowling, as we enter the month of March.
Zefran Funeral Home, with 52% wins and 25 % losses extended its first place lead to five games in February. In second place, Reliance Federal, with a record of 47 and 31, retained a slight edge over Marquette Service Station, 45% and 32%. Dr. Grill (42%-34%) took over fourth position from Blue Arrow-Douglas (41%-36%).
In March’s column, the John F. Cuneo team was given credit for a 1992 game. Sorry about that—it was a typographical error. No five-member team could bowl that spectacular! It should have read 1002.
B. Jakubowski was In the spotlight again last month with the first 500 series of her bowling career. Barbara shot 524-128 pins over her 132 average. Her teammate, F. Smulski, rolled 103 pins over her 132 average. Fran had a 511 series. Also 103 pins over was Ii. Putzell, who had a 536 series. Lil’s average at the time was 144.
Geneva Niedzielko, a 136 bowler, just missed that magic number, as she came through with a 496 series. Stella Gorka, our leading bowler with a 171 average, shot a 589 series.
The high game for the month was rolled by Agnes Kovacs—236 scratch. Anne Wagner, a 132 average bowler,had a 214 game.

On Feb. 13th, we celebrated Valentine’s Day. Each bowler brought a “hankie” and placed them in a beautiful Valentine Box. On each bowler’s first strike, she got to pick out a hankie of her choice. Of course, it took some of us a while before that strike, but it was worth waiting for such pretty hankies.
In team standings, Bluth’s Sausage is still holding the lead. Trying to catch them is Dames Funeral Home, just Z games behind. In a close third is Merichka’s. In there pitching is American Slovenian Home. Holding fourth is Northwest Recreation Club which finally jumped out of last place. Although tied in games won and lost with Shep’s DX Service Station, they have a slightly higher team average.
Jo Mlakar and Marje Wajchert take turns at being high man in averages. Right now Marje is first and I guess next week it will be Jo’s turn again. Dot Jaksetich, Marilyn Nemanich and Marge Gasperich round out the top five.
The high games for the month are: Virginia Guertin, (average 130) with 214 and 190 games. Nice bowling, Virginia! Marje Wajchert, 192, Ag Verbiscer, 183; Dot Jaksetich, 182 and Fran McCarthy, 181 twice.

Highlights — Scores of Eastern Bowling Tournament
Eastern Bowling Tournament held March 5, 1967 was again a successful one with 2|0 teams taking part. Last minute changes had to be made from the west side of the city to the far east end to the Shorgate Lanes in Willowick, Ohio. We were very fortunate that they accommodated us on such a short notice. All bowlers were notified on the change two days before the tournament and they all accepted graciously and all were on time to start rolling at 3 p. m.
At this time I wish to thank all bowlers taking part, committee who assisted me, namely, Jo Lea of Br. 47 and Alyce Arko Br. 15, and the hostesses who readied the luncheon for all the bowlers, namely, Stella Dancul Br. 21, I.ouise Eppley Br. 73, Mary Bostian, Carol Traven and Angie Lubje of Br. 50.

GOD ANSWERS PRAYER
In. economy of salvation the prayer plays an important role. Many graces are released and many blessings given because of prayer.
Few people will deny that God answers prayer, sooner or later, in one way or another. But many would like a more direct connection.
“The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord: but the prayer of the upright is His delight. The Lord hears the prayer of the righteous ...”
To live the righteous life seems to be the first requirement. The second was stated by Jesus: “What things soever you desire, when you pray, believe that you received them and you shall have them.”
Believe — receive. These are the key words. Psychologists tell us that if a man sets his heart on one thing, believing sincerely that it will come to him, it will sooner or later, depending upon the strength of his belief.
Every good thing is already in existence in the mind of God. Believing is an act of faith. The actual “building material” from which our innermost desires are created. “Faith is the substance of all things. Substance: reality, materiality.
Deeprooted faith comes naturally to some happy people. Others must learn how to believe.
We learn to believe as we learn any other worthwhile thing through practice. We must believe in the eternal goodness and righteousness of God as we believe in sunshine and air. We must believe that He and He alone, can supply us with all our needs although they usually come to us from human agencies. We must believe He is ready and willing to grant our requests if we do our part. And what is our part?
We must perform our daily tasks with serenity and confidence, knowing that if we do as much as we can, as well as we can in faith, God will answer our prayers. We must work. Faith without work is dead.
Then we must pray without ceasing. We must maintain as constant touch with the Father as possible, not always asking but thanking Him, as well, for blessings already received and asking guidance that we may live according to His will and purpose for us.
Belief, coupled with practice and work, will bring us our inmost desires. God’s power and goodness are available to all without limit.
No. 43, Milwaukee, Wis. I would like to thank the Jelenc Funeral Home and Rebernisek’s Club 3G for backing our two bowling teams which were entered in the Midwest Bowling Tournament in March.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the bowlers from our branch and also Marie Floryan of West Allis for sparing enough room in their bus to Chicago for the tournament so we could go with them.
April 11th, Tuesday, we are holding a luncheon at 6 p. m. sharp followed by a card party. All members, their husbands and friends are cordially invited. We need your cooperation in this ordeal.
We have two members who are hospitalized: Mrs. Elizabeth Spraitz and Helen Riff el. Both are at St. Francis Hospital. We wish them and all our shut-in members a speedy recovery.

February meeting, President Frances Sietz was greatly missed as she was ill at home with a bout of Emphasy-ma. We’re all hoping and praying that Fran will be on her feet by the next meeting. We decided to call our Feb. meeting MARY BOSTIAN NIGHT in honor of Mary and to the surprise of many members, also. — Carole Traven hostess of the even-
No. 50, Cleveland, O. Our branch celebrated Valentine’s Day by combining the meeting with a surprise party in honor of yours truly and they called it “Mary Bostian Day!” I never was so surprised in my life and never knew I had so many friends.
Oh, I tell you, our girls are tops when it comes to bright ideas! And a happy bunch they are, too. Our Carole Traven is really the greatest: when she starts something, she goes all the way. I must hand it to her! I admire her talent. She can do anything. I am very proud to know her. (Ditto on all these thoughts from the Editor.)
Carole and Frances Nemanich baked goodies and prepared a delic-icious luncheon and Emily Unik also lent a helping hand by bringing can dy for sweets. The girls decorated the table with all sorts of decorations and I just can’t say enough about how beautiful it was. Carole also prepared notes and verses to songs which the girls sang to me.
She planned one girl to represent each group that we have at Br. 50 and each one said her special words and sang to me. Then, they pre-
ing, along with Fran Nemanich and Ann Hočevar drummed up appropriate entertainment for the evening along with a few members who participated in the festivities. Angie Lube was decked out as a Valentine in a red crepe paper costume made by Carole. Then she presented Mary with a box of chocolates, since it’s “Sweets for the Sweet" and gave a little speech recalling Mary’s past and present activities.

sented me with a beautiful pendant watch and a heart box of candy. I tell you, I was stunned. I am very sorry that Fran Sietz wasn’t able to be present because of illness. Frances also helped to arrange this party which her sister Carole carried out. Ena izmed najvažnejših točk konvencije bo slavnostni banket v soboto, 27. maja 1967 ko bodo med nami navzoči ugledni washingtonski zakonodajalci in druge o-sebnosti. Tudi clevelandski mladinci bodo na programu, ki bodo za to priliko prišli v Washington. Podrobnosti bodo objavljene v Zarji. Načrti priprav so vzeli mnogo časa in je dobro, da gdč. Planinšek pozna dobro washing-Ionsko mesto in sta z urednico pripravile lep program.
Razstava ročnega dela bo zopet pomagala šolninskemu skladu. Upanje je, da bodo delegatinje prinesle kaj ročnega dela za razstavo in prodajo.
Posebno je važno, da vsi konvenčni gostje čimprej napravijo svoje rezervacije. Zadnji dan za rezerviranje je

Predsednica vodi razgovor glede mladinske aktivnosti in posebno pohvali podr. št. 50 na St. Clairju, ki imate odlično mladinsko skupino, katero je organizirala drž. preds. Mary Bostian. Mladinci št. 32 in 50 pa tvorijo euclidsko skupino. Pri podr. 25 v Clevelandu so imeli tudi zelo uspešno mladinsko Božičnico pod vodstvom gl. nadz.. Vicki Faletič. Euclidsko Božičnico je vodila Mrs. Bostian. Podr. št. 2 v Chicagu je imela Božičnico za 75 mladinskih članov. (J ostalih božičnih prireditvah je bilo pisano v Zarji. Povdari se važnost mladinskih aktivnosti in upanje je, da bi se pri vsaki podr. našla oseba, kakor so Mrs. Cooke in Mrs. Bostian in druge, pa bi bil uspeh zagotovljen.
Nakar se je vršila razprava glede kegljaških tekem. V razpravo so posegle posebno Mrs. Turek, ki je poročala o Clevelandski tekmi ter Mrs. Žefran, ki ima na skrbi čikaško ligo ter srednje-zapadno tekmo v Chicagu. Mrs. Zefran je poročala, da bo v Chicagu nastopilo 32 skupin. Izrazila je tudi upanje, da bodo imele tekme v drugih državah v bodoče.
V	torek so odbornice imele preglede v banki dopoldne in popoldanska seja se je pričela ob 2 uri pop. v gl. uradu z molitvijo. Podana so bila poročila tajnice finančnega odbora Mrs. Marie Prisland in tajnice šolninskega odbora Mrs. Dicke. Kar je bilo sprejeto z odobrenjem.
Prečita se priporočilo glede Slovenske kapele v Narodni Ameriški romarski katedrali Manje Čistega Spočetja v Washingtonu, katero je predlagal dr. Ciril Žebot iz Washingtona. Odbornice odločijo, da se predlog iznese na konvencijo v razpravo. — Čita se tudi pismo prejeto iz Ljubljane, glede ameriške ture slov. študentov dramatske šole iz Slovenije, ki bodo gostje na Univerzi v Kansas. Pripravljeni so nastopiti v raznih slovenskih naseljih. Preds. obljubi, da bo govorila s clevelandskimi odbornicami glede tega.
Predkonvenčna kampanja je zaključena z uspehom in tajnica sporoči, da je bilo vpisanih 300 novih članic in oznani imena zmagovalk. Prva je Mamie Marin od št. 50, Cleveland, kateri blizu sledi Ann Podgoršek od št. 33, Duluth, Minn, in Ann Cooke od št. 32, Euclid. Prejele bodo nagrade in zmagovalka Mrs. Marin dobi prosto vožnjo na konvencijo v Washington.
Nadalje se priporoča, da vsaka odbornica in delegatinja pridobi eno novo članico odslej do konvencije in jo pokloni ustanoviteljici ob priliki slavnostnega, banketa. To bo najlepši poklon od 40 letnici.
Ostali del seje je bil uporabljen razpravi glede spremembe pravil, katere je predlagala Mrs. Prisland. Predloženi bodo konvenčnemu odboru za pravila. Odbornice so razmotrivale možnost spremembe starostne dobe, da bi starejše članice mogle vstopiti v Zvezo.
Seja je bila zaključena ob G uri zvečer z molitvijo in voščilom predsednice za srečni povratek.

K0NVENČN0 POROČILO GLAVNE BLAGAJNIČARKE
Zopet je čas, da podamo poročila za 3 letno dobo našega delovanja v gl. uradu Slov. Ž. Z. Poročilo bo bolj kratko, ker poročam vsakih 6 mesecev vse kar se tiče mojega urada, Vsa poročila so priobčena v Zarji, ker upam, da jih vsaka zavedna članica pazno pregleda.
Podrobna poročila bodo poročale druge gl. uradnice, ki se tudi udeležujejo sej vsakih G mesecev, za pregled knjig vsega Zvezinega premoženja. Vse listine in vse kar se tiče Zvezinega premoženja je shranjeno v Metropolitan Banki v Chicagu. Torej v dobi 3 let lahko s ponosom poročam, da smo dobro napredovale v premoženju če ravno so smrtni slučaji zelo narastli v zadnjem času.

Kar se tiče podružnice še vedno zavzeman mesto predsednic« že čez 20 let, ker sem zelo ponosna na podr. št. 2, ki je skoraj naj bolj aktivna v tem času. Še vedno vodimo Zvezino Romanje v Letmont, IH., vsako tretjo nedeljo v juliju, ker vem, da članice so zelo zadovoljne, ker se skupno združujemo in uživamo lepo razvedrilo, katerega vse zelo potrebujemo.
Ob sklepu svojega poročila se zahvaljujem vsem gl. odbornicam za lepo sodelovanje posebno gl. tajnici Albini Novak, s katero sem imela največ posla kar se tiče mojega dela v gl. uradu. Imela sem vedno lepo sodelovanje.
Naša častna predsednica in tajnica finančnega odbora, Mrs. Marie Prisland skrbi, da se varno investira ves Zve-zin denar, da nam nosi lepe obresti, tudi nas navdušuje z lepimi članki v Zarji. Gl. predsednica Antonija Turek se zaveda dolžnosti svojega urada in ga prav lepo vodi
posebno skrbno razpečava kuharske knjige, da nam pripomore pri kritiju Zvezinih stroškov.
Vse priznanje urednici Corinne Leskovar, ki tako lepo urejuje naše Zarjo. Saj vem, da smo ponosne nanjo, ker je še mlada in zelo razumna.
Tudi vsem drugim gl. odbornicam, ker se vse lepo razumemo med seboj in se z veseljem snidemo vsakih 6 mesecev.
Častitam našemu duhovnemu vodju za lepe članke v Zarji, ki jih lepo podaja v Zarji, ker vem da vse rade prebirate. Torej sprejmite moje prisrčne pozdrave z željo, da bomo lepo zborovale v sosesterski ljubezni za napredek organizacije in članstva naše dične organizacije.

ŠOPEK NOVIH ČLANIC
Vsaki članici je prav gotovo v veliko veselje in čast, da imamo med nami še živečo ustanoviteljico Mrs. Marie Prisland, ki je pred 40 leti šla na delo za žensko organizacijo. Naša Zveza je v teh letih storila mnogo dobrega z'a slovenski narod in posamezne naselbine. Danes s ponosom zremo na zgodovino in še posebno na delo naših pionirk, brez katerih bi ne bilo tako močne Zveze.
Direktorice apelirajo na vse delegatke in obiskovalke prihodnje konvencije v Washington, D, C., da bi prinesle vsaj eno izpolnjeno prošnjo za novo članico v živ šopek, kateri bo poklonjen Mrs. Prisland ob času slavnostnega banketa. To bo izraz ljubezni, ki jo imamo do Mrs. Prisland in vseh začetnih članic.
Pred-konvenčna kampanje je bila zaključena s prvim januarjem, toda naše marljive podružnice niso odnehale z delom pridobiti novih članic, ampak še kar naprej pošiljajo prošnje. Posebno nas je presenetila podružnica št. 94 v Canton, Ohio, in podružnica št. 102 v Willard, Wisconsin od katerih smo dobili kar 12 novh članic. Pridno sta na delu tudi št. 33 v Duluth, Minn, in št. 17 v West Allis, Wis. Prav vsem gre naša iskrena zahvala!

Marie Prisland:
Kdaj se je moja društvena aktivnost pričela, želi vedeti več mojih prijateljic. — No, kdaj, če to še koga drugega zanima.
Rev. James Cherne, ustanovitelj slovenske fare in šole v Sheboyganu, je leta 1913 organiziral cerkveno Oltarno društvo, katerega tajnica sem bila 5 let. To je bil moj društveni “krst.”
Pomladi leta 1915 sva z g. župnikom Rev. Chemetom, govorila o društvih. Bila sem mnenja, da bi za našo rastočo slovensko naselbino bilo dobro, če bi ženske imele svojo samostojno podporno društvo po vzorcu moških društev ILIRIJA in NADA. Gospod župnik je bil mnenjia, da bi tako društvo bolj napredovalo, če bi ga priklopili Katoliški Jednoti. Tako je bilo 26, maja 1915 v naši naselbini ustanovljeno prvo žensko podporno društvo — Kraljica Majnika št. 157, K.S.K.J. Prevzela sem tajništvo ter ga vodila 10 let. Prvih pet let sem se borila za žensko enakopravnost pri Jednoti, dokler nam ni bila podeljena. Do takrat je namreč bil'a v veljavi postava, da smejo le moški delegati zastopati ženska društva na konvencijah, kar se je meni in drugim članicam nepravično zdelo.
Januarja leta 1919 sem v Sheboyganu organizirala Zvezo Jugoslovanskih žena in deklet. Društvo je zbiralo pomoč rojakom v domovini, prizadetim po prvi svetovni vojni. Pomoč je bila prav izdatna.
Meseca julija 1926 sem iz Ljubljane prejela novo-izdano knjigo SLOVENSKA ŽENA. (Urednica Minka Govekarje va.) Knjiga me je silno zanimala. Opisuje življenje in delo slovenskih pisateljic, pevk, zgodovinark, itd.
Pod naslovom SLOVENKE V TUJIH DRŽAVAH knjiga omenja ameriške Slovenke, kako se udejstvujejo v svojih domeh in v podpornih društvih ter pristavlja: “Za narodna ali kulturna vprašanja pa ameriške Slovenke nimajo dosti smisla.”—Ta izjava me je silno pogrela.
Takoj sem pisala takratnemu uredniku GLASILA K.S.K.J., če bi smela — kot glavna podpredsednica Jed-note — v listu imeti svojo kolono, kjer bi oglaševala našo odlično Jednoto, njeno pomembno narodno delo in njeno izvrstno življensko zavarovalnino, obenem pa tudi omenjala doprinose naših rojakinj za slovenski narod in njegovo kulturo, dokazujoč, da nismo kar tako.
Pokojni Ivan Zupan je moj predlog takoj sprejel ter obljubil napisati lep uvodni članek; ker pa je bilo samo še par tednov do Jednotine konvencije, je svetoval naj z zadevo počakam. “Po konvenciji pa začnemo na široko,” Je pisal.
Na konvenciji, vršeči se v Pittsburghu, sem navdušena zagovarjala samostojno društveno bolniško podporo ter se s tem zamerila tistim delegatom, ki so bili za centralizacijo; radi tega sem pri volitvah v glavni odbor propadla za en glas. Po konvenciji mi je bilo namignje-no, da moja kolona morda ne bo zaželjena, ker nisem več glavna odbornica
Odkar sem pričela spoznavati ameriške razmere, sem občudovala delo Amerikank na društvenem polju. Večkrat sem mislila, kako lepo bi bilo če bi tudi ameriške Slovenke imele svojo organizacijo, da bi se potom nje združile in do vidnosti dvignile sknpno žensko delo in ženske zmožnosti ter s tem koristile sebi, svojim družinam, narodu pa bile v ponos.
Omenjena knjiga iz Ljubljane in v njej izjava, da ameriške Slovenke nimamo smisla za narodno delo ter moja
prisotnost na konvenciji velike ameriške ženske organizacije, videč kaj vse lahko došežejo ženske drugih narodnosti, je potrebo po združenju ameriških Slovenk še bolj potrdilo. Do uresničenja je prišlo, ko je na zahtevo naših zavednih žena in deklet 19, decembra. 1926 bila ustanovljena Slovenska Ženska Zveza. Od takrat je moje društveno delo odprta knjiga.
DARILO ZA HČERKO
Oče pripoveduje:
Ena mojih hčera se je zelo zanemarila. Že nekaj let je srečno poročena. Ima sijajnega moža, ki dosega uspehe. Je mlad in pameten. Vse okolščine so take, da bi moja hčerka Karolina, morala biti zadovoljna. Pa ni bila. Ko sem jo pred nekaj tedni obiskal, je hodila po stanovanju s povešano glavo, slabe volje, z negrbanče-nim čelom, z nepočesanimi lasmi in v obleki popackani od jedil, ki jih je kuhala. Bila je nestrpna, gibe počasne in ustnice brez smehljaja.
Raziskoval sem, kaj bi moralo biti, da je takšna. Premišljeval sem, kako bi se ji dalo pomagati.
Teden dni sem bil pri njej v gosteh, pa se ni nič spremenilo; bilo je celo slabše. Hodila je okrog zane marjena, z nagubanimi nogavicami, z razvlečenim krilom in pokvarjeno zadrgo, v bluzi, ki so ji majnkali gumbi Za njeno enotedensko gostoljubje sem ji poklonil darilo in se odpeljal domov.
Teden dni kasneje me je obiskal moj zet Bobby. “Živijo očka!” je vzkliknil. “Karolina je čisto spremenjena. Vesela je, ves dan poje, oči se ji blešče, smeje se, lase ima počesane, spet se lepo oblači, da je pravi užitek pogledati jo.”
“Upam, da je res tako,” sem rekel.
“Si govoril s Karolino?” me je vprašal zet.
“Še na misel mi ni prišlo, da bi grajal hčerko, ko je bila že itak slabe volje.”
"Si kaj obljubil, če se bo spremenila?”
“Ne!”
“Kaj pa si storil?”
“Nekaj sem ji poklonil.”
“Morda denar?”
“Kaj še? Saj ga še sam nimam dovolj.”
“Si ji dal nakit, ali morda novo obleko?”
“Tudi to ne.”
“Kaj pa potem?” je že nestrpno vrašal zet.
Rekel sem in upam, da bodo tudi drugi zakonski možje in očeti v sličnem slučaju storili isto:
“Poklonil sem ji malenkost. Bilo je podolgovato ogledalo za prednjo sobo, ki jo ravno nasproti kuhinje. Mimo njega mora iti večkrat na dan in se lahko pogleda kakšna je...”
KAKO OHRANIŠ DOBRE ŽIVCE
če te kaj teži, ne pretiravaj in pretehtaj, če je res tako hudo. Predvsem	ne nosi	težav v	sebi, marveč	se
zaupaj nekomu,	ki je	tvojega	zaupanja	vreden. Skrb	se
bo že s tem zmanjšala, ko boš nji govorila.
Kadar čutiš, da ti nekaj posebno teži srce, prenehaj misliti na to. Pojdi po razvedrilo v gledališče, k znancem, k prijateljem ali pa hodi v trgovino pregledovati nove obleke in klobuke.
Ne misli vedno nase in na svoje težave, marveč poglej včasih tudi okrog sebe. Tudi drugi imajo svoje skrbi, pa jih morda bolj modro in vedro prenašajo. Posnemaj jih!
Delaj vedno le eno stvar naenkrat. Nervozni ljudje se radi lotijo več	stvari	hkrati,	kar jim	njihovo živčnost
še poveča, ker	so nezadovoljni sami	s seboj, ko	ne
morejo vsega naenkrat opraviti.
Ne zahtevaj preveč od sebe. Ne misli, da brez tebe ne gre. Loti se le tistega dela, za katerega imaš največ razumevanja.
Ne oziraj se na kritiko. Vsak človek dela po svoji sposobnosti in po svojem najboljšem mišljenju. Več ne more nihče od tebe zahtevati.
NAZAJ K OČETU
Vedno me nekako zadene pri srcu kadar berem zgodbo kralja Savla. Bog ga je postavil čez svoje ljudstvo Israel. Dasi mu je Bog izkazal velike milosti, ga je zapustil in delal po svoji glavi, /ato ga tudi Bog zapustil. Umrl je nespoltorjen. Sam se je prebodel s svojim mečem. Bog je vedno pripravljen odpustiti, vsak čas in vsakemu. Vse kar je potrebno: moramo se spokoriti. Pri preroku Ezekijelu Bog takole pravi: “Kakor resnično živim, nimam veselja nad smrtjo brezbožneža, ampak nad tem, da se brezbožnež spreobrne od svojega pota in živi. Zapustite svoja hudobna pota.”
Božja obljuba nikogar ne izvzame. Noben hudobnež, noben grešnik ni izvzet; tudi tisti, ne, ki greši že leta in leta, ki greši že pol življenja, celo življenje, ki od rane mladosti nalaga greli na greh, ki kupiči nehvaležnost na nehvaležnost, hudobijo na hudobijo. Pri svojem velikem usmiljenju postavlja samo en pogoj: da se spokorimo, da se obrnemo k Njemu. Pri preroku Izaiju pravi: Umijte se, očistite se, hudobnost svojih misli spravite izpred mojih oči, nehajte napačno počenjati .. . Potlej pridite. Iz tega razvidimo, da Bog odpušča vsem, vse, ob vsakem času — toda ne brez pokore.
DOPISI
Št. 2, Chicago, III. V marcu smo imele zelo lepo sejo. Predsednica je poročala, da je članska kampanja kar dobro uspela in tudi naše podr. se ni preslabo odrezala. Vse dele-gatinje prosi, da gotovo pridobijo vsaj eno novo članico do konvencije. Povabi tudi članice, da se pridružijo izletu v Washington ob priliki Zve-zine narodne konvencije.
Vse je urejeno za prijetno potovanje v našo prestolico in sicer ne z busom, ampak z vlakom, ki bo imel posebne vagone samo za naše izletnike. Potovanje z vlakom je udobno in stane na obe strani $39.85 ter mali strošek za prevoz iz postaje do hotela in nazaj. Na vlaku bodo z nami sestre iz Minnnesote in drugih krajev. Na seji se je že odločilo več članic za pot. Vse, ki se zanimate pokličite Mrs. Elizabeth Žefran.
Na tej seji so članice z zanimanjem sledile kazanju slik iz Washingtona, ki so nam živo predo-čile lepote in zanimivosti tega izrednega mesta, in kaj vse bomo i-mele priliko videti ob tej priliki.
Želje na hitro ozdravljenje ses. Mary Tivador in Mary Korenclian. Obe sta si zlomile noge v teku te hude zime. Mrs. Matilda Sever ni mogla biti navzoča, toda je vseeno poslala okusne “janževe opognence” in pristno kapljico v veselje navzočih. Prisrčna hvala in vse najboljše k njenemu rojstnemu dnevu.

11.	maj za Materinsko proslavo pri naši podr.. ki se bo pričela a sv. inašo v slov. cerkvi Sv. Štefana ob 7:30 zvečer, nakar bodo pete litanije in blagoslov. Od lani vemo, kako lepo je ob slovesnostih zvečer, zato želimo, da pripeljete s seboj vaše družine in prijatelje. Potem bo postreženo s kavo in pecivom v spodnji dvorani za vse.

hudi zimi, vabimo vas k sodelovanju.

Št. 3, Pueblo, Colo. — Ko bomo dobile našo ljubo Zarjo v roke, bodo velikonočni prazniki že za nami. Ti prazniki nam vedno prinesejo nepozabne spomine naših otroških let. Prelepa pomlad je tukaj, to je najlepši čas, da smo vsi veselo razpoloženi.
O,	blažena mladost, koliko lepih spominov zapustiš za seboj.
Danes imamo zopet žalostne novice za poročati. Smrt prepogosto obiskuje vrste naših slovenskih pionirjev v Pueblo in zopet je kruta smrt nam iztrgala našo dobro članico Frances Snider, ki je v februarju zaspala v Gospodu. Bila je prijazna in nad vse dobra žena in mati, vedno je potožila, da si želi, da bi jo Bog poklical iz tega sveta. Odšla je k svojemu možu, da skupaj uživata plačilo, katero jima je odločil Vsemogočni.
Iz te solzne doline sta se poslovila od nas Louis Mihelich, ki je bil vedno vesele narave in odlični godbenik na harmoniko. Pri večerji je dobil srčni napad in ni se več prebudil. Žalujoči soprogi izrekamo globoko sožalje nad bridko izgubo ljubljenega moža. — Drugi je umrl Anton Glach, ki je bil obče znan v naselbini kot dober gospodar in skrbni oče svoji družini. — Iskreno sožalje naj sprejme tudi Margaret Samnik, ki ji je umrla sestra Mary Pugel, Josephine Hermes, ji je pa bila teta. In Theresa Fear tudi žaluje za svojo sestro, Mary Franz. — Vsem umrlim naj zlato sonce sije na vaše gomile, kjer počivate In ča-kate na nas, da pridemo za vami. — Vsem preostalim naše sožalje.
Bolane so članice, Elsie Mramor, ki je imela operacijo na roki, Loraine Pechnilc pa je bila operirana na nogi.

chek, a Gertrude Arthur se zdravi do ma. Nenavadna nesreča je zadela dve naše članice, ki so rodne sestre: Mary Kristan si je hudo poškodovala roko v rami pri padcu v kuhinji. Rafaela Francel je padla na ledu na poti v cerkev in tako sta bile obe enako nesrečne. Obe sta pod zdravniško oskrbo na domu. V bolnem stanju so še vedno ses. Mallie Chorak, Mary Ogulin in Frances Petkovšek. Vsem našim bolnim sestram želim, da hitro okrevate.
Čestitke Judith Jordan, ki je povila zalo hčerkico, katero je zapisala v našo podr.
Ses. Gertrude Jordan (Lipičeva) ima vpisane pri naši podr. 7 vnukov in sinaho. Res posnemanja vredno.
Hvala ji za njen doprinos k napredku naše SŽZ.
Seje naša podr so dobro obiskane. Na febr. seji smo izvolile za zaslužno mater podr. in za delegatinjo, tajnico Frances Simonich in za namestnico delegatinje je blag. Frances Skul.
Naša 14 narodna konvencija se hitro bliža. Sedaj je čas, da članice raz-motrivate in napravite predloge za korist vse Zveze in naših podružnic, ker vsaka glava nekaj ve.
Želim velik napredek slavni SŽZ, našim članicam in glavnim odbornicam pa ljubo zdravje. Ako se mi zdravje vrne, se gotovo osebno vidimo v Washingtonu, D.C. na konvenciji.

Št. 6, Barberton, O. — Malo pozno je že, da poročam, da smo za to leto izvolile kot častno mater naše podružnice zaslužno sestro Stanger. Prisrčne čestitke! Počastile jo bomo z lepim programom v maju. Serviran bo tudi okusen prigrizek. Vse članice ste prošene, da pridete in pripeljete prijateljice.
Naši dolgoletni esstri Lavtar se je pripetila nesreča, ko je pri padcu si zlomila nogo nad kolenom. Bolna je tudi sestra Brunski. Obema želimo skorajšnjega zdravja. V bolnici je ses. Geiner, ki ji želimo skorajšnjega zdravja.
Zgubili smo dobro članico Elizabeth Gerbec, ki je preminula v visoki starosti 88 let. V znak sožalja smo stoje molile za pokojno sestro.
Letos bo bolj živahno med nami, ko bo državna konvencija S.Ž.Z. v našem mestu. Za letošnjo glavno konvencijo Zvezo, pa sta bile izvoljene kot delegatinje, predsednica Killoran in tajnica Ožbolt. Kaj več o tem pri hodnjič.

Št. 14, Euclid, O. — Ko smo šle na
marčevo sejo, je padal sneg, pa se je vseeno zbralo veliko sester na tej seji. Zdaj smo že v pomladi in upamo, da smo premagali mrzlo zimo in nas bo zopet grelo toplo sonce. Zaradi tega, prosim sestre, da se potrudite in pridete na seje, da ne bodo prazni stolči pred nami.
To leto bo naše društvo praznovalo
40	letnico, zato bi	rade,	da	bi	se
mnogo sester udeleževalo sej, da bomo kaj dobrega ukrenile za napredek podružnice ob tej obletnici.

Blaga hčerka, kako Te vsa leta pogrešamo, saj si bila tako skrbna za nas v bolezni. Stregla si nam in bedela mnoge noči.
Smrt se ne ozira na mladost, kosi in pusti ostalini bridkost vse dni.
Blaga hčerka, rožice sadim na Tvojo gomilo in dostikrat jih s solzami zalivam.
V	najlepši mladosti si bila poklicana od nas in to na največji praznik v letu, na samo VELIKONOČNO nedeljo, dne 21. aprila 1946.

Pri naši sestri Agati Zajc, so ta mladi kupili zalo punčko, ki je bodo klicali za Sharon Mary. Ravno tako je postala zopet gran-ma, Mrs. Brnov-ski, ko so pri njeni hčerki tudi kupili punčko. Torej naše čestitke na obe strani.
Na kratke počitnice se je tudi odločila ta mesec, ses. Josephine Čebul, ki bo šla s skupino upokojencev na izlet v gorko Florido. Želimo jim srečno pot in zdrav povratek.
Na srcu je obolela naša članica, Mrs. Vidic, ki je bila nekaj dni na pregledu v bolnici. Želimo ji, da bi se hitro pozdravila.
Ta večer smo tudi praznovale trimesečna godovanja. Slavljenke rojstnih dnevov so mnogo darovale; pecivo so prinesle: ses. Kog, Vrhovšek, Skur, Vidovec, Špehar, in Mikovlč.

Št. 15, Cleveland, O. — Na naši zadnji seji so darovale v društveno blagajno ses. Mary Papež, Louise Černe, Tresia Lindič. Najlepša hvala vsem.

V	poletnih mesecih julija in avgusta ne bomo imele mesečne seje. Naša prihodnja seja bo 10. maja ob 7:30 zvečer v navadnih prostorih. Po seji bomo imele materinsko proslavo s party in ste vse članice vljudno vabljene k udeležbi te seje. V nedeljo dne 14. maja, pa bomo imele sv. mašo za žive in umrle članice v cerkvi sv. Lovrenca ob 10 uri. Zbrale se bomo pred cerkvijo in skupno šle v cerkev. Med mašo bo sprejem sv. obhajila. Bogu in Mariji se bomo priporočile za naše dušne in telesne potrebe. Vse članice vljudno vabljene.
Bolana je naša zapisnikarica, Mary Filipovič. Njej in vsem bolnim člani-nicam želimo naj jim Marija skoraj zdravje podeli, ker zdravje je največje bogatstvo na svetu.

Št. 20, Jolet, lil. — Naše sožalje članicam, ki so izgubile svoje drage: sestri Catherine Pavnica, ki je nenadoma izgubila soproga, Thomas, starega komaj 52 let. Po poklicu je bil contractor. Pokojni je bil splošno priljubljen v naselbini. Pokopan je bi! iz farne cerkve sv. Jožefa na farno pokopališče. Za njim žaluje tudi več bratov in sestra. Catherine je bila dolgoletna keglačica, kakor tudi njena mama, ki je naša čla. Mrs. Mary Vlasich, ki se nahaja v Americana Nursing Home, ter Mary Spelich njena sestra in svakinja Theresa Pavnica, ki je poročena z bratom po kojnika.
Sožalje tudi sorodnikom Terlep družine ob izgubi brata John a, ki je vodil C & C gostilno. Izmed več sestra zapušča sestro Rose Šemrov, ki je naša dolgoletna članica, kakor tudi več bratrov in sina. Pokopan je bil iz farne cerkve na Woodlawn pokopal iščo. Vsem imenovanim izrekamo iskreno sožalje, pokojnim pa večni mir.
Izgubile smo tudi našo dolgoletno članico .sestro Frances Kome, ki ji' pristopila loLa 1933, torej je bila članica 33 let. V društvo jo je pripor-

čila Mary Panian. Pokojna je bila rojena v Novem mestu v Sloveniji. Njen mož ji je umrl pred leti. Zapušča več hčera in sinov ter ostalega sorodstva. Pokopana je bila iz domače cerkve na farno pokopališče.
Naše članice so molile ob krsti ter jo spremile na zadnji poti. Na seji smo se ji tudi oddolžile z molitvijo. Bila je tukaj dobro poznana in spadala je k raznim, društvom.
Na bolniški listi so še vedno sestre Rose Jagodnik, Jean Težak ter te dni se na novo nahaja Catherine Butala, sestra našega župnika msgr. M. Butala. Doma se zdravi ses. Catherine Zadel, dalje na domu se zdravi ses. Mrs. Pred Ferlin in v nursing home ses. Mary Jerman in Florence Valli, ki se je vrnila iz bolnišnice v Rochester, Minn. Ona je hčerka Mrs. J. Benedik. Vsem bolnim želimo hitrega okrevanja.
V	mladinskem odelku imamo dve nove članice: Charmane Marie Gruen-wald, vnukinja Mrs. Frances Petrov-cich in Debrah Lyn Ariagno, vnukinja Mrs. Mary ICunstek.
Važno za članice. Tajnica Frances priporoča, da tistim, katerim je umrl dedič, ki je zapisan na polici, da takoj spremenijo ime na polici, da v slučaju njihove smrti, se izplača iz gl. urada njenim ponovnim dedičem in se prihrani mnogo neprilike preostalim sorodnikom.

Na zadnje seji so se volile tudi delegatinje za konvencijo, ki se vrši v Washingtonu, D. C. Torej naše zastopnice so Enima Planinšek in Josephine Erjavec, za namestnice so Josephine Muster in Josephine Muster in Josephine Sumic. Preds. ob enem priporoča vsem članicam, ki se želijo pridružiti vlaku, ki gre na konvencijo naj telefonirajo takoj čla. Mrs. Lil Berge 727-7298. Laboratories in Ottawa za preizlcavo.

Št. 21, Cleveland, O. Naša podružnica se pridno pripravlja za materinski dan, ki bo dne 2. maja, na večer naše seje. Tajnica bo vse obvestila s karto, želja je da se pridružite vse članice in skupno počastimo častno mater in se med seboj spoznamo, ki smo sedaj skupno z št. 53.
Uradnice so vse prijazne in bodo vesele, da upoštevate njih delovanje v celem letu.
12. febr. je obhajala 25 letnico poroke članica Carrie Miklaučič iz Deise Ave. Naše čestitke! Za par mesecev počitnic si je privoščila v sončni Floridi naša zapisniltarca, Mts. Cecila Brodnik. Ta čas je dobila Mrs. Lah pozdrave iz Havajev od Mrs. Nosan. Hvala lepa! Tako tudi Mrs. Brodnik.
V	maju bo naša konvencija. De-legatinja bo tajnica Stella Dancul, in namestnica je Mrs. Lah. Če se bo povišala mesečnina gotovo se bo zgubilo več članic. Želimo, da ne pride do tega.
Kjer smo tudi pevke pri zboru Triglav, vabimo naše in sosednje podružnice na naš letni koncert ki obhaja, 20. letnico obstoja. To je 7. maja, popoldne ob 3:30 v Sahsen-heim dvor., 7001 Denison Ave. Petje je kot zdravilo. Pridružite se zboru, ld oživi celo naselbino z nčkolilco kulture.
12.	marca je bil počaščen za moža leta Mr. L. Kozak, žena pa rada pomaga pri nas. Čestitamo.

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Pred durmi je ljuba pomlad, katere si vsi že zelo želimo. Po dolgi zimi ko smo imeli veliko snega, se bo prileglo, da se bomo zopet ogrevali na toplem soncu.
Žal imamo več naših članic bola-nih. V bolnišnici se nahaja Pavla Vidrich in Mary Uranič, naša podpredsednica, ki je bila v automobilski nesreči, da si je poškodovala nogo, katero ima v mavcu. Dalje je prestala hudo operacijo Mary Jenko. V bolnišnici se je nahajala Josephine Rogel, ki pa je sedaj doma. V bolnišnici je tudi bil član mladinskega od-
delka William Charles Matthews. Vsem želimo ljubega zdravja, vsem, ki se zdravijo na svojih domovih, ali pa v bolnišnici.
Visoko 56 letnico zakonskega življenja sta dne 22. jan. slavila naša članica Mary Sadeč in soprog Matt. Želimo jima še mnogo let zdravja.
Tudi smrt je obiskala naše vrste, da smo izgubile že tri sestre. Zadnja je bila Mai-y Strukel, naša čarter članica, ki je dočakala lepo starost 83 let. Zapušča sorodnike tukaj in v stari domovini. Naj bo vsem pokojnim Bog dober plačnik.
Vabim vse članice, da se udeležijo seje, ki se bo vršila prvega maja zvečer. Skupno bomo ta večer praz novale Materinski dan. Želim vsem materam, da bi zdrave praznovale svoj dan v krogu vaših družin.
To bo tudi zadnja seja pred konvencijo, zato je važno, da pridete v velikem številu, da ukrenete kaj za dobrobit naše organizacije in da daste navodila in priporočila delegatinji za konvencijo.

Št. 25, Cleveland, O. — Zima je za nami in nastopila je lepa pomlad Kmalu	bo	vse	v cvetju in tako	se
bomo bolj	ogrele in raje	prišle	na
svetlo,	ker	bo	treba naše	grede	in
vrtove	obdelati	in cvetlice	negovati.
Iskrene čestitke naši sosednji podružnici št. 50, ki je pridobila največ članstva. Le tako naprej delajte da boste prekoračile našo št, 25. Pri nas gre malo bolj počasi. Jaz o im se postarala, drugače Vas ne bi pustila naprej.
Na naši seji v febr. smo se kar dobro imele in bila je zelo lepa udeležba. Zahvala vsem, ker ste nanesle toliko dobrot za prigrizek in za po-plahnit. Upam, da boste v tako lepem številu prišle tudi na prihodnje seje, kar pri vsaki seji imamo kako zabavo. Posebno pa prosim vse sestre, da bi redno plačevale asesment, ki je tako mali, da res ne bi bilo treba opominjati.
Pri naši podr. smo imeli kar dva zlatoporočna para in sicer v januarju sta slavila 50 letnico zakona Mr. in Mrs. Frank Baraga, 1144 E. 71 St.
60 LETNICO ZAKONSKEGA ŽIVLJENJA
Ses. Baraga je naša dolgoletna, dobra članica, ki rada pomaga v prid Zveze. Dolgo vrsto let sta vodila gostilno na istem prostoru, sedaj sta v pokoju. Mr. Baraga je doma iz Loške Doline v Sloveniji, a njegova žena je bila lojena v Clevelandu.
V febr. pa sta praznovala zlato poroko dobro poznana Mr, and Mrs. John Kramar, 1113 E. 63rd St. Oba sta doma iz lepe Ribniške doline. Mr. Kramar dalje časa boleha in mu že limo ljubega zdravja in zadovoljstva Slavljenka Rose je naša dobra članica in je vpisala svoje vnučke v Zvezo. Rada pride na naše seje. Obema paroma želimo ljubega zdravja, da bi dočakali diamantne poroke.
V aprilu praznujete svojo srebrno poroko dobro poznana Clevelandčana, tukaj rojena Mr. in Mrs. Louis Hlad iz 1158 Addison Rd. v krogu svojih sorodnikov in prijateljev. Mrs. Vera Hlad je naša prav dobra članica, ima vseh pet otrok, deklice in fantke pri Zvezi. Prav lepa hvala, Vera, ker lepo z nami držiš. Želim Vama, da bi dočakala zlato poroko. Bog Vas vse blagoslovi.

Vsem bolnim želimo ljubega zdravja, da bi kmalu okrevale.
In vse, ki imate rojstne dneve v marcu in aprilu, med njimi je tudi naša preds. Mary Kolegar, ki jih še kar lepo nosi, — njej in vsem želi mo še mnogo let zdravja in njej posebno še, da bi nas še mnogo let vodila.

Št. 68, Fairport, Ohio. — Poročilo mesečne seje z dne 19. febr. Tega večera se nas je zbralo lepo število članic. Sejo je odprla naša pod-pred-nica, Frances Ulle, ker naša predsednica Jennie Mohorčič se nahaja z možem v topli Floridi za par mesecev. Želimo jima zdrave in srečne dneve na jugu in da bi se zopet zadovoljna in zdrava vrnila med nas. To jima želimo vse članice.
Np :3eji smo se imele prav lepo, saj j ti tudi bilo lepo in toplo vreme.
Dne 24. januarju je naši članici Frances Pillar umrl njen mož. Dosegel je lepo starost 71 let. Po rodu je bil Slovak, toda je rad zahajal med Slovence in smo ga vsi spoštovali, ker je bil dober človek. Bog mu daj mirni počitek in lahka naj mu bo a-meriška gruda.

Št. 71, Strabane, Pa. Na februarski seji je bila povoljna udeležba članic in na tej seji smo izvolile dele-gatinjo za prihodnjo konvencijo. I-
Št. 41, Cleveland, O. — Naprej prav veselo poročilo, da sta dne 7. aprila praznovala v krogu družine in prijateljev 60 letnico srečnega zakona, Mr. in Mrs. Jakob Jerina, 15315 Lucknow Ave. Ses. Jerina je ustanoviteljica št. 18, katera se je pred par leti združila z našo enainštirideseto. Slavljenca je pred 60 leti poročil, sedaj že pokojni Rev. Kazimir Zakrajšek. Rodilo se jima je deset otrok, od katerih živijo še trije sinovi in štiri hčerke, imata 23 vnukov in pravnukinjo.
Meseca februarja sta pa obhajala zlato poroko Mr. in Mrs. Joseph Metelko. Mr. Metelko je znani stavbenik. Zlata nevesta je pa naša dolgoletna članica. Sinovi in prijatelji so jima priredili izredno lepo slavnost. Obema paroma prav iskreno čestitamo in jim želimo, da bi obhajali še mnogo obletnic v zdravju in sreči.
Vse natjlepše za rojstno obletnico želimo naši ses. preds. Mary Debevec in najbolšega zdravja v bodočnosti. Bog vas živi, Mary. Enako želimo vsem, katere godujete ta mesec.
Ses. Olga Benčič, Mary Novak, Nettie Strukel, Mary Bencar in Ann Lekan so še vedno pod zdravniško oskrbo. Vsem prav od srca želimo čimprejšnjega okrevanja.
Koncem meseca februarja je odšla v večnost ses. Fanny Kosec. Za njo žalujejo, sin, dve hčerki, sorodniki in
zvoljena je bila naša tajnica, Lucy Smith in za namestnico Mary Koclan.
Dne 11. febr. sta slavila 25 let zakonske sreče Ed in Margie For-genik sredi velikega števila sorodnikov in prijateljev. Iskrene čestitke!
Iz daljne Phoenix, Ariz. sta prišla na to slavnost tudi oče in mati slavljenke, Mr. in Mrs. Frank Božič. Mary Božič in Margie so naše članice.
Zimo imamo prav hudo, dosti mraza in veliko snega. Razumljivo je, da je veliko ljudi prehlajenih. Naša blagajničarka, Mary Boštjančič je bila bolana dalje časa, sedaj se ji zdravje počasi vrača. Njej ter Frances Batista in Mary Chesnik, ki so že dolgo bolne, želimo ljubega zdravja.

Št. 84, New York, N. Y. — S prijateljico Jennie Kvas se nahajava za 10 tednov tukaj v Miami Beach, Florida. Podnebje je krasno, samo 3 dni je bilo malo hladno. Običajno je do 82 stopinj. Ljudi je toliko, da so vsi hoteli in moteli polni. Medve sva v hotelu za starejše ljudi brez otrok.
Imajo krasni vrt, plavalni bazen, dosti zabave in 3 TV, dvorane za kartne igre in drugo. Največ ljudi je

prijatelji. Vsem preostalim žalujočim izrekamo iskreno sožalje. Pokojna Fanny pa naj sladko sniva in večna luč naj ji sveti.
Iskreno sožalje izrekamo ses. Ann Kozel ob izgubi ljubljenega soproga James-a. Blagemu pokojniku naj bo ohranjen lep spomin.
Lepa hvala za dar v blagajno ses. Anne Skok in Rose Kovačič. Vsaki posebej in vsem skupaj, katere ste nas tako dobro pogostile na zadnji seji, najprisrčnejša hvala.

iz New Yorku in Chicaga. Imajo 400 ljudi, pa mislim, da sva edine Slovenke. Imajo posebne buse za razne oglede, vožnje s čolni in v Community Center je vsak večer drugi program. Vrtove krasijo prelepe rože, saj je vse v bujnem cvetju.
Obiskale sva prijateljico Mrs. Tag-noli, njeno deliško ime je bilo Jančigaj iz N. Y. Z možem sta nam lepo postregla, potem pa nam razkazala znamenitosti Miami, med drugim tudi Fort Lauderdale. Obiskalo smo tudi Miami University, kjer se nahaja moj vnuk Stanley Voje Jr. in vnuk Mrs. Kvas, Kenneth Arber. To je v Coral Gables. Prišla sta nas obiskati in smo se prav lepo zabavali. Oba sta 18 let stara. Moj sin Stanley in žena prideta za 3 tedne, kakor tudi hčerka Betty z možem Frankom Birk. Tako bomo tukaj obhajali praznike. Obe družine pripeljeta tudi svoje otroke.
Prejela sem pismo, da jo umrla naša dolgoletna članica, Johana Rode pri sinu up-state. Bog ji daj v miru počivati. Darovale smo za sv. mašo, ki se bo brala za pokoj njene duše v slovenski cerkvi na Osmi v N. Y.
Članice prosim, da se udeležijo seje 18. aprila v dvorani pri Forest Stašin, da bomo molile za sestro Rode. Urediti tudi moramo več tekočih zadev in je dožnost. vsake članice, da pride in pove svoje mnenje.
Več naših članic bo zopet šlo na obisk rodne domovine Slovenije. lahko se pridružite skupini pod vodstvom gl. tajnice Mrs. Novak, pišite ji za informacije, ker letos je prav nizka cena, samo $339.00 do Ljubljane in želim veliko uspehov konvenciji.

Št. 100, Fontana, Cal. — Zaradi bolezni predsednice Mary Jasina, je sejo vodila podpredsednica Jennie Kurelich. Upamo, da bo predsednica drugič zopet med nami. Ses. Frances Vidergar je prevzela mesto zapisnikarice, ker je ses. Mary Vidergar preveč zaposlena.
Sklenile smo, glede marčnega bake sale. — Zahvalim se vsem, ki ste darovale v denarju, ali pecivu za ta dan in tako primogole naši blagajni Ne bom imenovala vseh imen, ker bi vzelo preveč prostora, pa naj velja naša prisrčna zalivala vsem.
Na 4 ne bo seje, ampak bomo imele pot luck večerjo ter praznovale bomo materinski dan in tako počastile našo aktivno zaslužno mater leta, ses. Rozi Krajnik.
Imele smo precej gostov od drugod, ena izmed njih je tudi ses. Jennie Aubel od št. 90 iz Bridgeville, Pa. Ona je že tretjič tukaj črez zimo, kakor tudi več drugih, ki so se umaknili zimi pri nas. Naša klima ugaja starejšim ljudem, saj smo skoro vsi že v jeseni našega življenja.
Ses. Frances Kapel je zelo vesela, ker je prišel iz Clevelanda sem za stalno z družino. Dobrodošli!
Praznovale smo več rojstnih dne-vov ter so nas pogostile z dobrimi paštetami, ses. Sušel, Omejc, Rupert, Železnikar, Zdravje in Martinc. Želimo, da bi še velikokrat praznovale in nas pogostile v zdravju in veselju.
Imamo precej bolnih sester, zato Vas prosim, da jih obiščete, ker vsaka bo vesela, da se je spomnimo. Ses. Močen je izgubila prst na roki in sestre Strnat in Jelušič sta še vedno v okrevališču. Ses. Luknich in njen soprog sta bila bolna. Ona doma, on pa v bolnišnici. Enako želimo ljubega zdravja sestrama Paro in Eda Dravenikar in vsem, da jim ga Bog čimprej podeli.
Za door prize so bile srečne v januarju Dorothy Petrich in ta mesec pa ses. Sušel, ker pripelje veliko prijateljic, da se bolj zabavamo s petjem in priljubljenimi igrami, nakar smo imele izvrstno okrepčilo. Hvala vsem, ki ste prispevale in hvala vsem gostom za obisk. God bless you all!

Druga skupina iz Osrednjega zapada, vključno Chicago, Joliet, Milwaukee in Sheboygan bo potovala z vlakom. Vlak bo odšel iz Chicaga, Grand Central Station, 23. maja ob 4 popoldne in bo prispel v Washington (na postajo) ob 8 uri zjutraj.

All nationality groups, which number about 136, boast of their great accomplishments in the fields of art, science and humanities. Yet, as with individuals, God endowed each nation with many characteristics and blessings.
Because our Slovenian language is not the langauge of the United States, Slovene history, culture and achievements are not well known.
During the time of the Roman Empire, all Slav nations lived on the wide planes of southern and western Russia with the Vistula in the North and the valleys of the Danube in the South. Most of them were farmers and herdsmen.
In the sixth century "the great migration of nations” began and the Slovenes settled in the mountainous Alpine lands.
From your history courses you’ve heard of such conquering countries, as the Germans, the Pranks under Charlemagne, Hungarians, Bavarians, Austrians, Turks, the French under Napoleon, the Nazis and Fascists.
All of these ruled the Slovenes with armed might. Governed by cruel lords and leaders, the just ones in the minority, the Slovenes all through their history struggled for freedom and liberty.
Miraculously the Slovenes did not become extinct. Undoubtedly this was due to their deeply rooted Catholic Faith, which was passed down to the present day. A few early missionaries tried, but it was the Greek brothers Sts. Cyril and Methodius (feastday July 7) who were successful in converting Slovenians from paganism in the 9th century. The two translated the Bible as well as the Mass into the Slovene tongue. Signs of the Slovenes love for their religion are the many shrines seen along roads and lanes.
Approximately 1V2 million Slovenes live in predominantly scenic Alpine country located in the northern part of Jugoslavia. From Slovenia came missionaries, bishops, explorers, scientists and political leaders interested in serving God and mankind.
Slovenia is also known for its great literary tradition. Statues are erected not to generals but to great literary figures as novelist Ivan Cankar, and poets France Prešeren and Oton Zupančič, who spoke of their country’s course, endurance, love, Slovenian beauty and poverty.
An English orator said: “All the world owes much to the little ‘five feet high’ nations. The greatest art of the world was the work of little nations. The most enduring literature of the world came from little nations. The heroic deeds that thrill

This month are celebrated the birthdays of two American-Slovene artists, who were born near Ljubljana, the principal city of Slovenia.
Ivan Zorman at the age of nine chose to be a songwriter. He compiled his poems into several anto-logies and set countless of his poems to music.
Zorman's songs were sung by the bariton Anto Shubel, who at the age of three sang seventy-five Slovene melodies. A member of various opera companies, he worked together with Zorman in promoting Slovene Ideals through music.
With this very concise writeup of Slovenia and with the very informative history which appeared in an early Zarja issue of 1966, one need not be in the dark about Slovenia. Admiration for the land of our forefathers as well as a great love for our USA enriched through the articles appearing in this magazine during the past year concerning our nation’s capital ought to make us boastful and appreciative of our past.
During this first month of Spring, the outdoors beckon us to enjoy nature’s coming-out party. There is a special joy in working in our yards— cleaning, spading and planting. Perhaps the reason is this:
