Osrednjo temo predstavlja znana Pavlova simbolika o Kristusovem telesu: apostol osvetli in potrdi svojo temeljno misel o enosti in pluralnosti. 38 | VESTNIK 2019 VESTNIK 2019 | 39 DRUŠTVO BLED - KOLINE H Another wonderful Koline event at Bled Hall last weekend. We look forward to seeing you all at Bled again soon! In mnogi so radi zaplesali. Answers to a set of Frequently Asked Questions appear in parish bulletins regularly. A compilation of all questions that have been published are available throughout the campaign at oneheartonesoul.ca. Are Parishes in a position to take on needed projects? This, of course, varies from Parish to Parish, but in general most Parishes are not in a strong position to take on major projects (those of $250,000 or more), and many projects have been delayed because of a lack of funding. One of the main reasons for the diocesan capital campaign is to assist Parishes big and small to gain more solid footing for the future - whether that's by completing an overdue project, retiring debt, building a contingency fund or looking ahead with a new ministry or new staff. What about Parish debt and Parish reserves - in general, where do things stand? The majority of the Diocese's Parishes can meet their operating budget and can take on small capital projects. Only a few, however, have substantial savings. Some have incurred debt, and the Diocese assists where it can with donations and loans, some of which are interest-free, to Parishes. Will the Parishes or the Diocese take on debt because of this campaign? It's possible for the right project and the right reasons, but that is to be determined by ONE O hearjCcD did oneSOUL YOU KNOW.. A Campaign for the Diocese of Hamilton the Diocese and Parishes as the campaign planning moves forward. What is the Ex Corde Foundation and how does it work? The Ex Corde Foundation was established in 2011 with a gift of $21.5 million from the Diocese of Hamilton and provides financial assistance to Parishes and other Catholic charities within the Diocese and across Canada. Ex Corde, which means "From the Heart," is operated by a board of directors and provides grants to repair or renovate buildings; to provide and maintain religious artifacts and works of art; and to support religious education and catechesis. As of September 2018, the foundation had donated $5.1 million, 90 percent of which has gone to parishes or other Catholic organizations within the Diocese. The grant amounts vary widely but commonly have been in the range of $15,000 to $25,000. The remaining 10 percent has gone to Catholic Parishes, dioceses or other organizations from outside the Diocese of Hamilton. The foundation board selects recipients twice a year from grant applications. For a list of all the grants awarded, see the link on the Ex Corde website, www.excordefoundation.com. VESTNIK 2019 | 45 THE MULTICOLORED FACE OF DON BOSCO TODAY_ Salezijanski vrhovni predstojnik, Fr. »Dear friends, I greet you most cordially. As I write to you, I am thinking of January, the month in which we will participate in World Youth Day in Panama together with young people and Pope Francis, and the month of Don Bosco's feast day, January 31, which, God willing, I will celebrate there as well. The people of Panama have such a great veneration for Don Bosco that more than 700,000 participate in the procession on his feast day. Yes! That number is correct - more than 700,000 people. Though I am looking toward January, the very Salesian month with so many feast days of our saints, a month dedicated to the Salesian Family and Don Bosco, presently, as I write these lines, I am engaged with the general council meeting that has just begun. This is when the Salesian general councilors return to Rome to gather with the Rector Major to "report" on their visits around the Salesian world on every continent, in one or other of our 1,936 presences. Many of them have just spent four months accompanying the confreres in one of our provinces. Several hours at the beginning of our meeting were dedicated to sharing with each other how we are and the experiences we have had in these past months. As I listened, my thoughts flew in all directions when hearing the many different, beautiful, and at times challenging testimonies. This is why I chose the title I did for this article, for today Don Bosco truly has a "multicolored face": ♦ We listened as one of the councilors described how in Yakutsk, in the middle of Siberian Russia, 6,000 km/3,700 miles east of Moscow, the Salesian community lives among and accompanies its people, few of whom are Catholics. (In fact, there were 15 at Holy Mass on the Sunday he was there.) Still, they share the daily joys and difficulties of those people. ♦ Another councilor shared how one's heart is touched by the accompaniment given the very many poor families and the difficulties they face 46 | VESTNIK 2019 at the Mexican border crossing points of Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Juarez, and Tijuana, among others. He spoke of how the Salesians live there to accompany these families and educate their children so that they can become freer each day from the drug- and sex-trafficking rings. ♦ I listened while another of our Salesian confreres recounted his visit to Nigeria, Ghana, and Sierra Leone. There we Salesians accompany young people who are in prison, just as Don Bosco did 170 years ago in the Generala, Turin's youth prison. It was Don Bosco's experience in the prisons when he was a young priest that left such a great impression on him, including making him sick to his stomach, and that brought him to the decision that he had to do all he could to help keep those young men and boys from returning to such a place. In those African nations today, the reality is no better than what Don Bosco knew. These young people, too, look forward to the daily visit of their Salesian friends. ♦ I inquired about our presence in another African nation that I had visited and where we take in boys, girls, and teenagers who had been kidnapped for the purpose of harvesting their vital organs. Thanks to the Lord, they were saved by the police, and we were asked to take care of them until we could find their families. They often remain with us for years. ♦ Then I shared the very beautiful experience I had myself when visiting various Salesian houses in Korea where boys - generally, teens and young adults - who have been sentenced for a minor offense live with us in genuine family spirit, feeling truly "at home." Instead of being sent to some other place where they would be deprived of their freedom, they come for a few months or a year into a Salesian house that provides a rehabilitation program. It was a joy to hear from three judges whom I met that more than 85% of those young men and boys are definitively rehabilitated and do not return to delinquency. This is another face of Don Bosco today - this time, with Asiatic-Korean features. While listening to all these stories, it struck me that Don Bosco must be happy on account of his sons and daughters in the Salesian Family who are still today intent upon being faithful to the charism that God raised up in him. And I felt great joy while listening to all these reports - which are only the tip of the iceberg - about the great good that is being done for so many people. This made me think that today Don Bosco's face has many colors that he himself probably never imagined. I am sharing these things with you, dear readers, because I believe that we ought to spread the good news of the very many beautiful things that are happening and that are going to happen. A long time ago I learned the Chinese proverb, "A falling tree makes more noise than a growing forest." This is precisely how it seems to be. Well, then, these reflections are what I wish to share with you - although they are just a tiny part of the silent growth in our forest. Happy feast of Don Bosco! We will remember you in Panama in the midst of a wonderful multitude of young people.« With affection, Don Angel VESTNIK 2019 | 47 Siooetiitui sfätoeiatioti "Pietent-A: 'Pteéemw 'Pteâ&ieaû (Stoaeacœa (fydfanai ^didocf) Sunday ydwvuf lOtâ. 2019 "TÎUm at 12:00. First Reading Nehemiah 8:2-6. 8-10 Ezra reminds the people of Moses' Law. He tells them to go and eat and drink, taking care that they share what they have with those who have nothing. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 We are all different, but we are also one in Christ's body. Gospel Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 We hear Jesus' manifesto for his mission. In the great Jubilee text, Jesus situates his ministry in the ongoing promise and commitment of God to those who are vulnerable. "This text is being fulfilled today even as Illustration Last year Britain saw a harsh winter. Then, just as spring was expected, the country experienced almost a week of an arctic blast of sub-zero temperatures and snow storms across Britain and Ireland. There were special fears for rough sleepers as homeless projects were overwhelmed. Christians felt an imperative to help homeless people survive and many churches opened their doors at night. Bridgend in Wales saw a wind chill factor making temperatures feel as low as -12°C. Churches assembled volunteers, blankets and food for those in need. As the Compassion Church in the town centre opened up overnight, the pastor said: "We're going to have some blankets here for peo- ple, a soup kitchen, maybe offer a movie or two and a warm and safe place for people to sleep. I don't think anyone in this community should be sleeping out because we're not sure if they'd make it through the night. We asked for twelve volunteers to cover three shifts overnight and we now have fifty to sixty people volunteering." He reported that barbers offered to come in and give free haircuts, others offered to cook, businesses gave food. In Scotland, the Episcopal Church of St John on Princes Street, Edinburgh, was another remaining open day and night, saying: "Anybody is welcome to warm up and stay." The Homeless Centre at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, the busiest homelessness centre in London, deplored that the average age of death for a homeless person is just forty-seven years of age, even without severe weather. And it was one of the Christian homeless groups condemning the injustice of the rough sleeping crisis. "What homeless people need is justice," said one group. It added: "The inequality and unaffordability of our housing situation is the worst injustice that there is in the country at the moment, and it makes thousands of people vulnerable. As well as helping people, we urgently need to address the situation creating this poverty. As well as a practical concern, we need a political concern." Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel we hear the great Jubilee text. Jesus goes to the sabbath service in the synagogue at Nazareth. His reputation has spread throughout the countryside, and many have come to see him, curious about what he might say. After all the miracles he has been performing in other places, they look to him to explain himself. Jesus stands up and reads from Isaiah, the text telling of the anointed one who is coming with good news to liberate prisoners, free the oppressed and announce a period of grace - the great Jubilee. Jesus concludes with: "This text is being fulfilled today even as you listen." The Old Testament principle of Jubilee is restored in the teaching of Jesus. Jubilee behaviour involves showing compassion and care for those crushed by social and economic structures. Jesus reveals his identity and his mission to bring "good news to the poor". Application As a congregation, a social justice group, a school group, a family or even as individuals, we are called to live in step with the spirit of Jubilee renewal. This means showing compassion to people in need, but also working to break the chains of structural injustice that prevent millions throughout the world from realising full and dignified lives. We are called to seek ways to release from poverty those who live on the outer margins of society. Many of us have a deep desire to do something about the plight of the world's poor people. Living the Jubilee principle means understanding that poverty is not simply about lack of money, and that charity alone -though vital - will not bring it to an end. The biblical vision of Jubilee provides a perspective to guide the Christian community's behaviour in the larger economic system. It invites us to listen to the voices of people who are poor, oppressed and powerless, to deepen our understanding of the structural causes of global poverty and injustice, to pray for long-term solutions to the global poverty crisis, and to share wealth with those who are poor. In recent decades, there have been strong Jubilee movements, involving the churches, to cancel the debt of low-income countries, bring about trade justice, and challenge the huge amounts of global spending on arms trading and nuclear weapons. Through prayer and action, our congregation can be part of the worldwide Jubilee movement to tackle greed and inequity, and build a just and fair global economy within a sustainable environment, for the sake of the world's poorest communities.
