Slovenska župnija sv. Gregorija Velikega | St. Gregory the Great Slovenian Church 47/50 Številka - Number / Leto - Year 14. 12. 2014 3. Adventna NEDELJA IRD Christmas 2014 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, 3rd Sunday of Advent Fr. Drago Gačnik, sdb župnik - pastor Naslov - Address 125 Centennial Pkwy N Hamilton, ON L8E 1H8 Tel.: 905-561-5971 Fax: 905-561-5109 E-mail Gregory_sdb@ stgregoryhamilton.ca Web page www.carantha.com Hall rentals Cell: 905-518-6159 E-mail Hallrental@ stgregoryhamilton.ca Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy and peace. The birth of Christ in a manger is presented in soft and beautiful terms. The message and the music of angels announces the divine nature of the event. However, in human terms, the story of the birth of Jesus is filled with hardship, rejection and flight. The love of Mary, the determination of Joseph, and the devotion of the shepherds lessen the horror of homelessness and migration. We have seen that horror most recently in the lives of too many people who have been forced to flee their homes because of decrees that have caused death, destruction, and despair. These people have left everything - their homes, their jobs, their belongings. But, despite threats they have clung to their faith in Jesus Christ - their sole hope! This Christmas, remember these people - sisters and brothers in faith. Pray for them. One day they may be sitting beside you in your parish church praying in thanksgiving for the welcome they received and for the religious freedom we experience here. We have many rich blessings - which must be protected and shared. Remain alert that they not be lost. Share them generously, so they may be enjoyed by others. Sincerely in Christ and Mary Immaculate, +DougIaS Crosby, OMI (Most Rev.) Douglas Crosby, OMI V nedeljo, 7. decembra 2014 so otroci slovenske šole skupaj z učiteljicami pripravili vsakoletno Miklavževanje. First Reading Isaiah 61:1 -2. 10-11 Hope can feel a little bit like fear, the sort of joyous fear a bride and groom feel on their wedding night. Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 Where there is peace, there is God. Where there is God, there is peace. Gospel John 1:6-8. 19-28 God sent John. We are part of that sending. To be a Christian is to have a mission. "Make a straight way for the Lord" Illustration There are some things we do for people and some things we do with people. A good human being has virtues that are for other people and for God. There are other virtues, though, which are called the theological virtues, which cannot just be exercised for God but must be exercised in the presence of God. These virtues are faith, hope and charity. They do not exist apart from God. Think of a woman cooking dinner. She might be cooking for herself; she might be cooking for her family; she might be cooking as a hobby. She might be cooking to impress friends or important visitors. Whatever the reason, the cooking is the object of her attention. In the same way, other virtues - justice, courage, wisdom, self-control - are virtues that serve a purpose but are not, in themselves, a way of being with God. But when we have faith, or hope, or love for God and God's creation, then we must be in some way with God, even now while we live on earth. These virtues are gifts of grace, miracles of grace in fact. In these virtues, we are close to God. They are the fulfilment of the meaning of one of the titles given to Jesus Christ: Emmanuel, which means, "God is with us". It is the incarnation that makes these virtues possible. During Advent, we renew our sense of that presence of God in human life, by going back to the time before the Son of God took our humanity to himself. Gospel Teaching John the Baptist stood between an old world and a new world. He didn't belong to the old and he had not yet found the new. His mother called him John, and his father, unable to speak since he had doubted the angel's announcement of this child's coming birth, affirmed this in writing: "His name is John." People were astonished by this, as no one in their family was called by this name. It seemed as if they were rejecting their own son. Yet this was necessary. It was appropriate for John to be in the desert for much of his life. He needed to go out into the desert, to leave behind Israel; and there, in the desert, he was filled with longing rather than hope. In the emptiness of the desert, he experienced the emptiness of human aspirations without God. Looking back at the history of Israel, he could see how humanity had run away from the God who called them. Long before John was born, his ancestors had crossed the Jordan but they had not truly entered the promised land. So John stood in the desert, and the people came to him at the Jordan. There John found the Messiah he had been waiting for; but Jesus was not, perhaps, the sort of Messiah John had expected. When John met Jesus for the first time as an adult, then there began a new kind of faith. John had been filled with the Holy Spirit from the womb, but now it was possible to be with the Lord who revealed himself, not just to humanity but through humanity. John would not have been born if there was to be no saviour. John could not save the world, but he could show that it needed to be saved. By revealing the emptiness of the world, he showed the greatness of the one who could fill it with his life. Application From the beginning of Advent to the end of the Easter season, we are asked by the Church to make a liturgical journey. It is a journey that follows the path of Christ's life, because that is the pattern of all Christian life. Advent is the time of expectation and hope. Although we follow the path of those who waited for the Messiah, he has already come. So our hope is different from the hope of Israel. Our hope is not a hope for redemption but a hope for the redemption that began in Christ to come to its completion. The world changed when Jesus Christ came, but we are liable to forget that, unless we continually remember the time when Israel waited for his coming. Now that he has come, we can see our prayer, and our works of faith and love, as a way of living out that redemption, with those special theological virtues that keep us always in the presence of God.
