First Thanksgiving Was Day of Fast The Thanksgiving holiday celebrated each November in the United States is known worldwide as an American custom, but its roots extend far back in history. According to research, the first Americans observed rituals and ceremonies to express gratitude to a higher power for life itself. A Seneca Indian ritual, for example, states, “Our Creator... Shall continue to dwell above the sky, and this is where those on the earth will end their thanksgiving.” Another quotation attributed to American Indians before Columbus is, “The plant has its nourishment from the earth and its limbs go up this way, in praise of its Maker... like the limbs of a tree.” Pilgrims’ First Harvest Feast According to historical sources, the Pilgrims never held an autumnal Thanksgiving feast. The Pilgrims did have a feast in 1621 near Plymouth, Massachusetts, after their first harvest. This is the feast people often refer to as “The First Thanksgiving.” This feast was never repeated, so it can’t be called the start of a tradition, nor did the colonists or Pilgrims call it a Thanksgiving Feast. In fact, to these devoutly religious people, a day of thanksgiving was a day of prayer and fasting. Nevertheless, the 1621 feast has become a model for the Thanksgiving celebration in the United States. More than likely, this first harvest feast was eaten outside, based on the fact that the colonists didn’t have a building large enough to accommodate all who came. Native Americans definitely were among the invited guests, and it’s possible, even probably, that turkey (roasted, but not stuffed) and pumpkins in some form found their way to the table. The feast is described in a firsthand account presumably written by a leader of the colony, Edward Winslow, as it appears in Mourt ’.v Relation: “Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl which served the company almost a week. At that time, among other recreations, we exercised our arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and among them came their greatest King Massasoit, with some 90 men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon the captain and others. And although it be not always as plentiful as it was this time, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want.” New World -- Many Cultural Influences In addition to thanksgiving traditions brought to North America by settlers from many parts of the world, some authorities link the American thanksgiving with the ancient Jewish observance of Sukkot in the fall, which expresses thanks to God for the bounty of the earth. Indeed, all the major world religions - including Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam -have rituals, observances and liturgies that express thanks and gratitude to a higher power for the gift of life and its wonders. George Washington’s first proclamation after his inauguration as the nation’s first president in 1789 declared November 26, 1789 as a national day of “thanksgiving and prayer.” The annual presidential thanksgiving proclamations ceased for 45 years in the early 1800s. President Abraham Lincoln resumed the tradition in 1863. President Roosevelt signed the bill establishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. Because two years out of every seven have five Thursdays in November, some states for the next 15 years celebrated on their own on the last Thursday. However, since 1956, the fourth Thursday in November has been observed as Thanksgiving Day by every state. Blaško is Umpapa Honoree by RUDY FLIS Sunday, Nov. 9 was sunny and bright, and chilly. But it was a perfect afternoon to ferret among the hills of Southwestern Pennsylvania. We finally located the S.N.P.J. Club in Sygan, PA. It sure is pretty country, even at this time of year. Therese, my wife, was unable to travel with me to Sygan, but I was not alone. Ed and Julie Harbie and Gene March made the trip most interesting as I tried not to get too lost. Where is Sygan, PA, and why were we there? I can show it to you on a map, but more important it seems to me, Sygan, PA is in the middle of polka country and where the Umpapa was to have their awards dinner. Umpapa sounds like the musical note of a tuba, right? United Musicians Polka Association of Pennsylvania is U.M.P.P.A., and their man , of the year in 2003 is the Rev. George Balasko, our beloved Polka Priest. Elizabeth Bertiotti received the Booster Award, Sam Pug-liano the Disc Jockey Award, and Bobby Homovic the Lifetime Achievement Award. A posthumous award was presented to the family of Benzy Rathbone. The main man, Father George, took some kidding from his friends, and he returned some of it. This all went on in a beautiful hall where friendly people and conversation exuded. Father George was in his element, among friends, hearing the beautiful and melodious polkas and waltzes, which thanks to Fr. George we now use at Mass to sing praises to our Lord. We had a long drive home, and didn’t leave early because of the pleasant atmosphere. Yes, it was a most special day for Ed and Julie Harbie, and Ed March of the O-Ja’s, and me, as we spent Sunday afternoon with our Polka Priest, Fr. George Balasko, priest, musician, but most of all - friend. Congratulations Fr. George! You deserve it! ‘Polka on Air’ at Awards Show XVI by CECILIA DOLGAN Return to the days of yesteryear with live radio broadcasts and pioneer radio announcers. Polka Awards Show XVI of the Polka Hall of Fame will highlight the musical careers of two Lifetime Achievement honorees, Roman Possedi and Sam Pugliano. These two longtime bandleaders made an impact with their Cleveland-style polka music in Chicago and Pittsburgh, respectively. The Awards show will take the audience on a musical journey of “Polkas on the Air” from early radio shows, 78 recordings, polka disc jockeys, polka television shows, to polkas on the Internet. The Awards Show is at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29 at Euclid High School auditorium, East 222nd Street, in Euclid, just north of 1-90. Phil Srnick is returning to the helm as director of the show, after an. absence., of five years. Phil promises to weave an entertaining musical theme with the focus on the awards and honorees. Musical director Fred Zi-wich has assembled a talented All-Star Band, which will play throughout the show. The show follows a Grammy-style format and includes the two newest Greatest All-Time Hit Songs, in this case - for the first time - two waltzes “Simcic’s” and “Zaplula.” A “Blast from the past” is a reunion of two Lifetime Achievers who formed the Mis-Tre band in the 1980s, Joey Miskulin and Lou Tre-bar. At 6 p.m., the scene shifts to the Marriott Downtown Hotel where a Polka Mass with Bishop Edward Pevec officiating, will be accompanied by Joe Novak and Friends. “Quarterly” too WORDS MORE OR LESS by John Mercina 1676 THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION (Located on the Internet at vvilstar.com) ’‘The Holy God having by a long and continual series of his afflictive dispensations in and by the present war with the heathen natives of this land, written and brought to pass bitter things against his owrn covenant people in this wilderness, yet so that we evidently discern that in the midst of his judgements he hath remembered mercy, having remembered his footstool in the day of his sore displeasure against us for our sins, with many singular intimations of his fatherly compassion, and regard; reseiving many of our towns from desolation threatened, and attempted by the enemy, and giving us especially of late with many of our Confederates many signal advantages against them, without such disadvantage to ourselves as formerly we have been sensible of, if it be the Lord’s mercy that we are not consumed, it certainly bespeaks our positive thankfulness, when our enemies are in any measure disappointed or destroyed; and fearing the Lord should take notice under so many intimations of his returning mercy, we should be found an insensible people, as not standing before Him with thanksgiving, as well as lading him with our complaints in the time of pressing afflictions. The council has tliought meet to appoint and set apart the 29th day of this instant June, as a day of solemn Thanksgiving and praise to God for such his goodness and favour, many particulars of which mercy might be instanced, but we doubt not those who are sensible of God’s afflictions, have been so diligent to espy him returning to us; and that the Lord may behold us as people offering praise and thereby glorifying Him; the council doth command it to the respective ministers, elders and people of this jurisdiction; solemnly and seriously to keep the same beseeching that being persuaded by the mercies of God we may all, even this whole people offer up our bodies and souls as a living and acceptable service unto God by Jesus Christ ” HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL ! Left to right, Gene March, Julie Harbie, Fr. George Balasko, and Ed Harbie ____J Life in the Refugee Camps by ANTON ŽAKELJ translated and edited by JOHN ŽAKELJ Monday, Nov. 10,1947 At 4 a.m., the British Field Service arrested our organist, Franc Zupan. We don’t know why. We hear rumors that British and Yugoslav troops occupied the Spittal camp, looking for “war criminals.” Everyone is feeling very hopeless; some people feel It’s not safe to sleep in their own beds. Vinko Krizisnik went to Graz for the third time regarding emigration to Can-ada. It looks like he will be the only tailor from our camp who will be allowed to go to Canada. Another tailor, Ivan Rozman, applied, but was denied. Wednesday, Nov. 12,1947 Our loggers got blood tests today as part of their request to emigrate to Canada. We heard more news on the radio about the agree-me it between General Slim and Marshall Tito. About ‘00 “war criminals” were returned to Yugoslavia. Thursday, Nov. 13,1947 Ivan Rozman, the tailor, disappeared last night. Some People think he left to visit his bride-to-be in Salzburg. We heard that 11 refugees 'vere arrested at the Spittal Carnp, but 4 escaped. The CamP was surrounded by 500 troops. About 40 people aave moved outside the camp because they are wor-ned they will be forced to return to Yugoslavia. ^Saturday, Nov. 15, 1957 This evening, 1 received a telegram in German: “Father dead; funeral on Monday. Marica.” It’s not clear, but it seems to be about my father. I am in shock.. Sunday, Nov. 16,1947 At church this morning, people expressed sympathy for my father’s death. Later in the day, I learned that the telegram was from Marica Peternelj in Spittal, and she was writing about her father, not mine. Her father was the mailman in our home village before the war, and a good friend of our family. Monday, Nov. 17,1947 Vinko had to return to Graz for X-rays. The Canadians want to make sure he’s not sick before they let him immigrate. I tried every way I could to get transportation to Spittal for Miha Peternelj’s funeral, but nothing was available. I sent a letter of sympathy to Marica. Wednesday, Nov. 19,1947 We heard news reports on the radio that all Austrian money will have to be exchanged for new money which will be worth one-third less. Thursday, Nov. 20,1947 The news report regarding the money exchange has caused a panic. People are buying anything, just so they won’t lose money. Even though I have more now (about 2,000 shillings) than I usually have, I’m not buying anything. Friday, Nov. 21,1947 I bought some special food for Cilka’s nameday: bacon, cabbage and pork. Saturday, Nov. 22,1947 Some of our roommates ' cooked more sugar beets into syrup. Pavle was angry because the others didn’t work as hard as he did. This afternoon I chopped wood and cleaned the yard in front of the barracks. Monday, Nov. 24,1947 Our friend Silva arrived for a 3-day visit, bringing klobase, potica, and other good things. Tuesday, Nov. 25,1947 We went to the “festsaal” in Judenburg to see the operetta “Fledermaus.” I was pleased, even though it was rather expensive. I paid over 40 shillings for 6 of us -Silva, Cilka, Vinko, Helen, Mire and myself. Thursday, Nov. 27,1947 Many of our men who have been opposed to repatriation will be moved to Trofaiach (about 30 miles from Judenburg). The group includes many members of the refugee council, and Rev. Malavašič, Oblak, Tominc and Sršen. If I had been elected to the camp council, I would probably have to move also. The IRO does not want people agitating against repatriation. Tuesday, Dec. 2,1947 Many of us signed a petition against the move to Trofaiach, but it didn’t do any good. Seventeen men were moved today. Some people say conditions in Trofaiach are better than here. Special Poem for Senior Citizens A row of bottles on my shelf Caused me to analyze myself. One yellow pill I have to pop Goes to my heart so it won’t stop. A little white one that I take Goes to my hands so they won’t shake. The blue one that I use a lot Tells me I’m happy when I’m not. The purple pill goes to my brain And tells me that I have no pain. The capsules tell me not to wheeze Or cough or choke or even sneeze. The red ones, smallest of them all Go to my blood so I won’t fall. The orange ones, very big and bright Prevent my leg cramps in the night. Such an array of brilliant pills Helping to cure all kinds of ills. But what I’d really like to know... Is what tells each one where to go. —Thanks to: Ruth Abbott Parma, OH Slovenian Artists in Cleveland The Slovenian American Heritage Foundation invites all to attend the final talk in their 2003 lecture series. I received many phone calls from friends after the story was printed. I hope the story will encourage others to try to locate their families 2 in Slovenia and research their heritage. < After the story appeared I sent a copy to the Grošelj’s in Slovenia and asked them to please write what it was like for them coming to Cleveland and meeting their relatives. The folio »ving article is what Igor sent me. -Virginia (Ginny) Pinkava Mayfield Heights, Ohio D Embracing the Family It all started at the beginning of the 20th century in a little Slovenian village named Gradišče in the picturesque valley of Tuhinj (location: northern part of central Slovenia, between Celje and Ljubljana). It began a hundred years ago, when the Grosel family broke apart. Four young Grosel brothers decided to leave their fatherland. — Franc, the firstborn child and Joseph, the youngest, went over the mighty Slovenian Alps into Germany. They heard there were good jobs to be found in the industrial area of Bavaria. Simon and John, on the other hand, decided to go over the Atlantic ocean to find their share of luck somehow and somewhere in the great land of America. What the brothers had left behind were their dear mother, Lucija, little sister Agnes and their brother Martin. The boys didn’t care for their father, Nikolaus Grosel. The family property which once was an impressive farm, was now almost ruined, due to father Nikolaus’ bad gambling habit. Result of their years of work on the farm was lost. There was just no reason to stay. Also, with four less hungry mouths to feed, the family somehow, maybe would manage. After more than 10 years, following the First World War, Frantz and Joseph returned from Germany. Slovenia kindly accepted them once again. They had saved some money, got married and started their own farms in the green valley of Zagorje, both at their wives’ homes. Simon and John never returned home Times changed, and many battles were fought on Slovenian soil. People have changed. Houses were ruined and rebuilt. Imperceptibly, but persistently, memories were forgotten. Time marched on. Until four years ago At the beginning of the new millennium, Ursa Grošelj (30), wife of Igor Grošelj (32) and mother of Vasja Grošelj (4), began to examine the family history. She decided to start a family tree. With her thorough research, new family data started to turn into our reality. New names, and more importantly, new persons behind those names started to paint new more colorful picture of our family history. On August 12, 2001, Ursa found an old letter, one postcard and some pictures from the USA. Simon Grosel had sent them all around 1930, but they were forgotten in a wooden box on the attic of the late Joseph Grosselj’s family house. We were totally surprised to discover our ancestor’s relatives had emigrated to the United States. A new project was started at once. “Let’s find out if there still are any Grosels over there,” we thought. We used Internet, of course, and after a few exciting hours that seemed like seconds to us, at around 1 a.m., we already had three phone numbers of Grosels in Pennsylvania. The answer to the question, “To call or not to call?” was obvious. We called at once. I remember the exciting feeling at that moment, when somebody really did answer. Before that, it all seemed like a dream. I was afraid I would wake up to disappointment after dialing the number. But the dream came true. Lorene Grosel from Mount Pleasant, near Pittsburgh, PA, Sam’s wife, picked up the telephone. I spoke slowly so I wouldn’t frighten her and did my best to explain who we were and why we were calling. After enumerating all of our common ancestor’s names and their birthdays, she finally said, “Everything is correct.” The contact was made! We were all jumping up to the ceiling and down again because of our happiness. Faxes, e-mails, photos and letters, which followed, prepared us slowly to our first meeting. We invited Sam’s family to Slovenia. A family reunion was on the horizon. Sam and Kimberly Grosel were supposed to come to Ljubljana airport in the summer of 2002. Preparations started. Unfortunately, Sam Grosel, the metal man from M^unt Pleasant as he calls himself, had hip surgery. The first meeting was postponed. Meanwhile, Urska dug further with her family history research. Her family tree grew bigger with every weekend. She visited many church archives and many graveyards. She also became active in a Slovenian Genealogical Society. She often used Internet as an information resource and once at the regular Internet checkout in the spring of 2003 she found an e-mail address of Virginia Pinkava (Ginny) from Cleveland, who was interested in any information about Grosels from Tuhinj valley. Ursa wrote to her and then... Well, they really started to exchange e-mails. Here we were all thrilled again. Every day we felt closer to Ginny. It proved out, we do not only have one relative family over there in the USA, but Ginny’s family is also related to us. When Ginny, who by the way, is a very pleasant lady, invited us to visit, we immediately decided to go to America. A few months later, our airplane landed at Hopkins International Airport near Cleveland. Tensions grew. What will happen when we finally meet? Will we recognize each other? What will our reactions be?, etc. I remember the long monotonous airport corridor. We were silently walking towards the exit. I remember carrying heavy luggage in my hands. Still, with every step we made, we somehow managed to move faster. We almost ran. I remember the moving stairway and the light at the end of it. Ginny! Ginny and Linda! They stood there. Smiling. So were we. We laughed, in fact. It came from our hearts. We felt like a child would when receiving a new bicycle. There was so much to learn about each other. There were so many unforgettable days to be lived together. The surroundings just didn’t matter. We hugged each other and laughed and talked intensely. We were happy. We felt like family. We had 12 great days in the USA. Every day was a story by itself. We met Wonderful people. We saw miraculous things. We visited both of our relative^; we even succeeded in bringing them closer together. We traveled around l,70d miles. We also went around Lake Erie into Canada, etc. And now, after returning to our dear Slovenia, we can say it really was a wonderful family reunion. How does the story end? Well, I am telling you it did not. This is only the beginning. We still try and get together at Mom’s (Joann Kaifesh) the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to mix the stuffing, then stuff the birds in the morning. Mom’s trick is to put the stuffing between the skin and the meat, instead of in the cavity. It keeps the meat moist, and the stuffing gets a great flavor, too. This is enough for 1 turkey (we double or triple for Thanksgiving). Ingredients: Vi C butter chopped celery chopped onion Vi C milk chopped heart and giblets 'A lb. bulk sausage (Bob Evans) I'/i loaves bread, broken 1 Vi t salt Vi t sage 1/8 t pepper 1 Vi T parsley 3 or 4 eggs Vi lb. ground beef chopped liver Directions: Saute butter, celery and onions, heart and giblets, then add 'A cup of milk and let simmer. Mix all the other ingredients in a big bowl and pour the sauteed mixture in when all vegetables are tender. Mix together until all tlie bread is moistened, and let sit overnight before stuffing the bird. —Kim Ann Kailesh Our Family Recipfl Slovenian National Home - St. Clair Invites you to join us this Thanksgiving Eve! After reading last week’s article, I succeeded in that I was able to make the column shorter and in doing so, you noticed that with the conserved space, we were fortunate in getting an editorial written by the Commander-N-Chief of American Home, Jim Debevec and will have to say it was a wdl written report. I was tempted to cut it out and send it to our “Big Wigs” in Washington, but on second thought, maybe it would not do much good for at times I feel they do not have both oars in the water. But what happened to my colleague Rudy Flis? And don’t tell me there is no lead in your pencil. Theresa, make sure he writes his column or I’ll see to it that he gets “MRE’s” for supper. For those not familiar with basic training, MRE’s are “Meals Ready to Eat” and am sure Rudy would not look forward to that. Come on Ray, where are the jokes? It seems that after the little boy’s first day at school, when he got home he told his mom he was not going back. “How come?” his mother asked. The boy exclaimed, “I can’t read, can’t write and they won’t let me talk.” Okay, one more for the road. A Texan and a Kentuckyian were trying to outdo each other and the Kentuckyian bragged that they had enough gold in Kentucky to build a solid gold fence three feet high and two feet wide around the entire state of Texas. “Go ahead and built it,” the Texan said, “and if we like it, we’ll buy it.” Rather than getting back to our move to Parma Heights and the tragedy that followed, since we are embarking on the upcoming Thanksgiving holidays, we will hold off on that phase of the new home. Needless to day that living alone now, I do not cook from scratch every d^y and today was my day to spend in the kitchen. I noticed I was out of Italian meatballs and so Ray trotted out to the Ethnic Market on Pleasant Valley and York Road. This is the place to buy meat and when it comes to ground chuck, I believe that Bruce the butcher actually picks the cow from the pasture and walks it around for a week to insure it has lost all of its fat. I did not get a teaspoon of grease from it. Over the years Josie and I made our meatballs from a recipe called Firemen’s Meatballs and some advice I got from one of the Italian cooks who prepared the spaghetti dinners at “Our Lady of Mount Carmel.” What can I say. Dean Martin would gladly wait around for my meatballs so get out your scissors and let this be one of your treasures and you have my permission to call them “Your Meatballs.” This will truly put a smile on your mate’s face. Thanksgiving Joke A wife invited some people over for Thanksgiving dinner. At the table, she turned to their six-year-old daughter and asked her to say grace before the meal. “I don’t know what to say, mother,” replied the little girl. “Oh, just say what you hear Mommy say,” prompted her mother. The daughter bowed her head and prayed: “Oh God, why on earth did I invite all these people for Thanksgiving dinner.” —St. Vitus Church Bulletin ,---------------------------------- ' Fat Free Sweet Potatoes with j Pineapple 2 fresh sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced (1/4”) 1 8 oz. can pineapple tidbits (save juice) 1 T. brown sugar V* t. Like a mailman, neither rain nor snow nor sleet kept me from my appointed duty. Never late, I trudged the 50 feet to my studies with the Ursuline nuns. Yes, you read that right - we lived right next door to the school, though it was often a mixed blessing. Sister Lucy was my first grade teacher, and her sibling Sister Ralph, taught me in the second grade. Everyone remembers and loved Sr. Lucy who seemed to have been bom in introduce little children to the discipline of school. She had the knack of staying in charge with just the right mixture of kindness and patience to soften the shock of our first experience with other than parental home authority. Sr. Ralph had a matter-of-fact approach not quite as gentle as her sibling’s, but with a year of school already under our belts, she was just what we needed to advance our degree of responsibility. Miss Princ presided over third grade with a lovely face, a beatific smile and a gift for teaching. Despite her weight, you rarely heard kids sniggering about her size. A lovely lady and a wonderful teacher; she fully deserved the affection and respect shown by her pupils. Sister Rachel, our fourth grade mentor, was more strict and rigid due partially to her own personality, but mostly because we were in need of more discipline. Sr. Irma ruled the fifth grade with a ‘no-nonsense, do your work, behave or else,’ type of authority. She wielded a tight rein on the class, and sometimes a ruler on the knuckles for certain boys, myself included. Grade six had been Miss Lavrich’s domain, but she had married and became Mrs. Kremžar by the time I arrived, which was a bit confusing for kids our age. She had a calm, confident manner that kept us in line with- out much effort. Perhaps our previous year with Sr. Inna had softened us up. Seventh grade belonged to Sister Andrew, a tall, strong-willed disciplinarian and another odd coincidence of two nuns in the same school who were siblings. Her sister was a much more relaxed but effective nun who taught our eighth and final year of Catholic grade school. She was Sister Agatha, and also the school principal. Older and more stocky than her sibling and not as tall, she had a pronounced limp. Coming from a large Hungarian family, both were used to eating well. Often chatting over our fence (sometimes about my behavior), my mother became quite friendly with Sr. Agatha who remained principal long after I graduated. The nuns had to prepare their own lunch in the school kitchen, but were a lot happier when Mom passed a large pan of home-cooked Correction to Alumni Article Editor, I inadvertently wrote that Babe Cizel wiped every plate before it was placed on the tables. It was my dear friend Josepha Strauss who came down to help us, not feeling up to par herself. Babe was down earlier to help with the set up of tables and chairs. Josepha, who is also known for her lovely alto voice, helped us pull our impromptu chorus together. Mea culpa, mea culpa. Reminder: January 8 Alumni will meet in the Slovenian Room of Slovenian Village. Join us for an evening of friendship; and as always, mmm good refreshments. —Agnes J. Although our teachers were all different, some easier or tougher than others, I have good memories and feelings about them all. This may not have been true at the time, but I came to this realization soon after graduating from high school. Recently, I looked at a photo of our fifth grade class but there were no names to identify the kids. Amazing that 60 years later, I could put names to all their faces. The surnames of two of the girls escaped me, but when I noticed they were not in later class pictures, I realized they had been with our group only a year or two. When I graduated from the eighth grade, my eating habits had all come home to roost in the form of fat and flab. The big 8 x 10 photo dated June 6, 1943 is a grade school graduation photo taken by a professional photographer. The good news is, that I could name everyone in the group. The bad news is, that in spite of hiding most of myself in the back row, my face betrays the fact that my weight is nearing its peak of 235 pounds. I was already five foot ten, but this was scant consolation for my corpulence at the age of 13. No, I wasn’t ‘chubby;’ I was fat and destined to be fatter, though not taller. They started their tour of California in San Diego and v'sited many California missions following the route of the Spanish Franciscan missionaries to San Francisco, hey were accompanied by the Auxiliary Bishop of Ljubljana, Alojz Uran, Fr. 0ze Černe, and Fr. Tomaž Prelovsek. The ceremonies began ^ith the Saturday evening ass which was concele-rated by Bishop Uran, with Several priests from Slove-j|la> includingv Msgr. Franci etric, Fr. Janez ustarsic from Minnesota, r' Krizolog Cimerman from ew York, and the new Pastor of the Church of the ativity, Fr. Jerry Frydryey and also the two Slovenian Priests leading the pilgrimage. In his inspiring homily, 'shop Uran reviewed the 'story of our parish over the siast 100 years. The feast then added a deeper spiritual, prayerful, and grateful thanksgiving. For us, it also preserves closer ties with Slovenian traditions. The entertainment portion of the evening was coordinated by Fr. Franci Trstenjak, chief editor of Radio Ognjišče, in Ljubljana (the Slovenian Catholic radio station). The program started with a moving rendition of the Slovenian national anthem “Zdravica” by the talented singer and guitarist Ivan Hudnik, musical director with Radio Ognjišče -many sang along with him. Ivo Ravnik, President of the Educational and Dramatic Club Slovenia, then welcomed all the guests and thanked them for participating in this historic event. He also summarized briefly in English some of the sentiments expressed by Bishop Uran in Slovenian earlier in his homily, emphasizing the strength of the Slovenian people who were able to endure adversities over the ages. Diana Fir Gremmet, the local star soprano, then charmed us with her singing of the American National Anthem and another lovely melody (Zalostinka). At this point, Bishop Uran was asked to come to the podium. He first conveyed the greetings from all the Slovenian bishops and all the faithful to the parishioners of the Church of the Nativity for the occasion of this wonderful jubilee. He delighted the audience with his remarks again pointing out the resilience of the Slovenian people and the importance for the parishioners of three nationalities in being able to worship together in harmony. He concluded by singing two of his favored songs: “Kol’kor kapljic” and “En starček je živel” in his unique memorable fashion and beautiful voice. The program was then turned over to John Hutar, the Honorary Consul for Slovenia, who presented three proclamations to the parishioners for the centennial of the church: one from the Slovenian Ambassador to the United States, Davorin Kračun; one from the Mayor of San Francisco Willie Brown; and one from the California Senator Diane Feinstein. The evening was then taken over by lively music mmmm Ales Šimenc (standing, forefront) and Church of the Nativity Choir Honorary Consul John Hutar, handing out proclamation to priests and parishioners: From Left: Ivo Ravnik, Rev. Matjaž Prelovsek, Pastor Jerry Frydrych, Martina Sepaher, Msgr. Franci Petrie, Ann Sustarich, Rev. Joze Ceme, Pater Krizolog Cimerman, (mostly hidden) Rev. Janez Sustersich. performed by singer guitarist Ivan Hudnik and accordionist Miha Močnik, also with Radio Ognjišče, who delighted everyone with their rendition of Slovenian songs and provided a great opportunity for dancing polkas and waltzes - the music was only interrupted by the distribution of the raffle prizes. * Almost as an anticlimax, but a grand finale, was the Sunday morning High Mass, which was concelebrated again by Bishop Uran and all the above-mentioned priests, and with San Francisco Auxiliary Bishop Ignatius Wang presiding. Bishop Wang greeted the bishops, the priests, and the “pilgrims” in the name of the S.F. Archdiocese and congratulated the parishioners for their centennial jubilee. Under the expert direction and organ playing of Ales Šimenc, the accomplished church choir, including the outstanding soloists Diana Fir Gremmet and Alex Rav- nik, filled the church with wonderful singing, including parts of Hayden’s Mari-azeller Mass. The old saying, “Quis cantat bis orat” rang true as the singing resounded throughout the church and all the hearts were lifted heavenward. This was really a memorable weekend for the Church of the Nativity, worthy of the centennial jubilee. The events could not have been possible without hard work and many sacrifices in preparation for these celebrations. A great deal of credit goes to Martina Sepaher who was in charge of Martinovanje and put together an efficient working dinner crew. The committee for these events included, besides Martina Sepaher, also Joseph Govednik, Dorothy Novak Rusch, Frances Jenko Chil-coat, and Ivo Ravnik. They in turn were able to delegate work to numerous parishioners who were able to decorate the church and the church hall to make this event truly the celebration of the century. Potem so ga ubili. Zakaj Amerika? Jubilej stoletnice župnije (ustanovljene 12. januarja 1902), nastopa prvega župnika Franca Turka (1. avgusta 1903) in pozidave nove cerkve (1904) so spodbudili naše rojake k praznovanju. (AS 3, Dok. Sove) Udba ga je prišla iskat domov: bil je sam doma, ker so bili domači ravno V LJUBEČ IN BLAG SPOMIN Ob 8. obletnici, ko je bil poklican od nas naš skrbni mož in oče, stari ata, brat in stric Ivan (John) Cendol Umrl 1. decembra 1995 Sonce naj na trato sije, kjer počivač dragi Ti, Duša pa naj srečno uživa tram v rajski večnosti. Rekli so mu, da ga bodo spustili, če bo študiral kaj drugega. Zato so ga poslali v vojsko. Domači oficirji so ga imeli radi. Pred tednom sem bil na malgaški visoki planoti, visoki 1200 do 1500 metrov, kjer leži glavno mesto in še nekaj večjih razvitejših mest. Tu sem lahko opazoval pokrajino v cvetju - belem, rumenem, vijoličastem, oranžnem, torej v vseh mogočih barvah. Prava pomlad. Občasno so jih obiskovali misijonarji in utrjevali njihovo vero.
