LET’S WORK WITH RENEWED VIGOR!
SLOVENIAN CHAPEL AT THE NATIONAL SHRINE OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, WASHINGTON, D.C.
A Resolution was sent to us at our 14th National Convention by Dr. Cyril Zebot appealing to the Slovenian Women’s Union of America to help in raising money for a Slovenian Chapel to be erected in the Immaculate Conception Slnine which is one of the largest Catholic churches in America.
It was accepted by all delegates that we take this responsibility to join other organizations to try and raise the appropriated sum of $50,000 which will be the cost of the chapel, with a clause that we alone will not be obligated in any way if we do not succeed in raising the quota. But, I pray and hope that with the help of each one of you and all other Catholic Organizations, Institutions and Clergy, the chapel will be a lasting shrine for all Slovenians in America.
The Slovenian Chapel would be dedicated to Our Lady of Brezje “Marija Pomagaj”, Queen of the Slovenians. As a part of the American National Shrine, it would be a most fitting symbol of our Slovenian, Christian Heritage and an enduring monument to its pioneering contribution to American Religious life and culture of which our own Bishop Baraga was one of the founders.
“NEW ERA CAMPAIGN”
You all read in last month’s issue about the new campaign which is in effect since July 1st to October 31, 1968. This campaign will run fifteen months -— during this period we should be able to get at least '1000 new members!
How about the branch officers getting busy by promoting this drive for new members? You not only are building up your membership, you also have a chance to build up your treasury. Get in the race and let us see some new winners!
In Class B the age limit has been raised to 60 years. Here is an opportunity to get your friend as a member of SWU.

STONE SOUP
Stressing the need of simple values we can solve the problems of our daily lives. The following parable can explain what we mean. It was used on Captain Kangaroo TV show.
Three soldiers were walking home after a long, bitter war had ravaged the country side. They came to a small village quite hungry and asked for food.
But the village people were afraid of strangers. "We are sorry but we ourselves don’t have enough to eat,” one man told them.
“Yes and the harvest was very bad,” said another. It was the same throughout the whole community. No one had anything to give them. Food seemed non-existent.
“This is a very bad situation,” said one of the soldiers. We will have to make some stone soup.” “Stone soup?”. The people showed surprise — and interest. “What in the world is that?”
“First of all”, said the soldiers, “we need a big iron pot.” Two men brought back the largest they could find.
The fire was built in the village square; it took over a dozen pails of water to fill the pot.
“Now, for the special ingredient,” said one soldier, and he placed a flat smooth stone at the bottom of the pot. As the water began to boil, the people gathered around the pot with great curiosity.
“Of course, any soup needs a little salt and pepper,” said one of the soldiers. Two children disappeared and soon returned with some salt and pepper.
“It sure smells good,” said one of the soldiers as they stirred the water. "It’s too bad we do not have a few carrots. Carrots really add something to stone soup.” A woman slipped away to her home, then returned with some carrots.
“Now if only there was just a bit of cabbage, but of course we don’t have any, do we?” Another woman thought she might find some cabbage.. She returned with three.
The tasty aroma from the boiling pot was now obvious to everyone. Several other villagers disappeared to get a piece of beef, potatoes, goat’s milk, some barley.

ACTIVITIES
No. 1, Sheboygan, Wis. — Greetings to all officers and members.
June meeting was well attended. An interesting report of our National Convention held in Washington, D. C. and highlights of the sight-seeing tours and other activities were given by Mrs, Marie Prisland and our delegate Mrs. Olga Saye. We were very pleased to have at this meeting our member Frances Skufca from Ventura, Calif. After the meeting we celebrated Mrs. Prisland’s birthday. We enjoyed her treat of krofe and coffee and entertainment by our Olga. Mrs. Mary Spelshaus made a special cake in the form of a Cross as a gift to the birthday celebrant and the officers also presented her with a lovely gift.
A hearty “Thank you” to the following members who donated into our treasury: Mrs. Josephine Vogrin from FI orida, Mrs. Josephine Rem-shak from Colorado and from local members:	Mrs.	Ursula	Marvar and
Cecilia Casel.
Our congratulations and best wishes to Mr, and Mrs. John Turk who celebrated their Golden Anniversary and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gorenz upon their 40th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Gorenz is a former secretary of our branch.
We are very happy and proud to know that Zveza’s scholarship winner, Michael S. Francis received a R. O. T. C. scholarship amounting to $3,700.00 for the next two years. He is studying erospace engineering at the University of Colorado. Congratulations to him and to his parents Mr. and Mrs. Louis Francis.
A member of our branch Mrs. Mary Zore Healy who resides in Chicago, was in Rome with the official party of Archbishop Cody of Chicago witnessing the elevation of the Archbishop to Cardinal. What an honor and prestige to be able to attend such a solemn ceremony.
Our deep sympathy to the families of Helen Mesich and Josephine Kotnick. Mrs. Kotnick was our Mother of the Year in 1962.
Our card party will be held Sept. 13th in the Church Hall. We hope for a good attendance. The Chairman is Mrs, Anna Modez assisted by Mrs. Mary Turk. Both have been doing good work for our previous card parties.
At our last meeting greeting cards were sent to the sick members with a sincere hope for a speedy recovery.
Our first fall meeting will be held Sept. 17. We hope to see many of you present.
Pictures from Washington, D. C will be shown at the October meeting. Please make a record of the date, October 15th, which you just can’t miss! Hoping you all are enjoying the beautiful summer months.

No. 12, Milwaukee, Wis. — Zveza Day at Lemont, 111. was attended by one bus from our group, and it was good to renew some memories and laughs over the recent trip to Washington with our own group as well as those from various branches, including Irene Planinšek that we ran into at Lemont. I was glad to personally ask her to thank her group for the good job they did for our benefit.
I think a Zveza Day of our own at Holy Hill, or Burlington, is needed for a good “get together” of our own as well as any interested members of the Slovenian Women’s Union and friends. Both churches are beautiful sites as well as having religious sites on their grounds, and a picnic area, also lunch rooms, and it would prove to be a worthwhile day.
I am sorry to report that we are still at a loss for any definite news of our “anniversary celebration”. It seems Fr. Okom is not able to give us any definite answer, so we’re out looking again and any future announcement would be too late to reach Zarja. I do hope another postponement will not be necessary.
Our sincere sympathies go to the family of Mary Korpnik, who died while I was vacationing in Ely, Minn., my hometown. While there, I en-
joyed a very brief visit with Barbara Rosandich, her sister whom I went to school with, and a neighbor, Rose Federber. Barbara with her true Slovenian hospitality, insisted I stay to enjoy a very good dish I hadn’t had since my mother used to cook for me.
I	enjoyed it very much.
Back in Milwaukee, only to hear of another death, Josephine Walovsek passed away and because she is a cousin of my husband, I will personally convey my sympathies as well as express those of the Lodge.
Remember our future meetings will be held at the “Lily Club” on National Avenue between So. 22nd and So. 23rd Sts., on the third Thursday of every month. Hope to see a larger attendance. Mary Dezman, Sec’y.
No. 14, Euclid, Ohio. — Our August meeting was well attended, and it was nice to see a few new faces. With the summer almost behind us,
I	hope you all had a pleasant one. Our meeting was spent mostly discussing our forthcoming card party to be held Sunday, October 2'2nd at Rechar’s Hall in Euclid, Ohio.
Thank you, Molly Sodja and Mary Bubnic, for your donations to our good-time fund, and thank you Frances Mocnik for your donation to our good-time fund. I failed to mention it in my last report to Zarja and I’m sorry.
Congratulations to Henry and Pauline Krall on their 31st Wedding Anniversary celebrated on Augst 1st and to Mr, and Mrs. F. Bubnic on their 40th. We hope you enjoy many more happy and healthy years.
Mary Fakult had a busy summer. Her father, Mr. Joe Semich, visited Yugoslavia in June to help celebrate his brother’s 50th Jubilee as a priest, that is, Msgr. John Semich, whom he hasn’t seen in 54 years. In turn, Msgr. Semich returned to America with his brother to celebrate the 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Semich (Mary’s parents,) at St. Paul’s church, July 16, followed with a family gathering at Mary’s home. God bless them all!
INDIANAPOLIS' 40th YEAR AT LEMONT
No. 5, Indianapolis, Ind. — As I
sit here and think about what to write about my trip to the National Convention in Washington, D. C., I have to laugh thinking about Sophie Turk and niysell'. We had to chase every train we rode. It is lunny now, but it wasn’t (it the time, carrying our heavy suit-cases. We missed the train and had to come home by bus.
What a hilarious time we had. The tours were just wonderful and I would love to get a group from Indianapolis to go sometime. If we do,,
I	will get in touch with Irene Planinšek. Many thanks to such a lovely person, and a wonderful hostess.
Thanks to all who helped make the Convention a success.
After 40 years of going to Lemont in July, we still act as if it is our first time. Everyone was there sitting in their seats waiting for our beloved Msgr. Edward liockhold to give us his special blessing so we could be on our way. It was a beautiful day and as the doors closed on the bus, we started singing happily on our way. As soon as we got on the highway, our wonderful friend and neighbor, Frank Velikan, whose smiling flace makes everyone feel happy and gay, led us in the prayers of the rosary, litany and singing of hymns After awhile Pete Barbarich began to play his accordian, and we practiced the hymns we were to sing at the two Masses. We sounded pretty good, we thought, and so, hi-li-hi-lo into ia polka we went.
In no time at all we were at Lemont and as we turned to the road leading to St. Mary’s Seminary, we sang “Ti o Marija” and said a prayer in thanksgiving for a safe trip under her spiritual guidance.
Brother Robert, his congenial and smiling self met us as usual, and gave me the list of rooms that we were to have. After getting everyone settled, we all cleaned up a little and then went into the dining room for our delicious supper, which had been prepared for us. After eating we went to St. Mary’s church, where confessions were heard and later the benediction, the litany and prayers were held. After services, we were free to do as we pleased.
Sunday morning everyone of our group was up bright and early to attend the 7 a. m. Mass. We did our very best in participating at Mass and singing the lovely Slovenian hymns and all received Holy Communion in a body. Father Fortunat had the Mass, and his sermon on the changing church was instructive and very much appreciated. Even though our folks understand the American language to a degree, hearing it in Slovenian brings much more clarity and understanding to them. As he said, Faith is needed so much these days, and with God’s help we will
come through these trying times much richer for change means progress.
Sincere thanks to you Father Fortunat, for explaining and giving our folks such an impressive, and instructive sermon. Bless you, Father!
Our breakfast was delicious, and we proved it by cleaning up our plates. Our own Mrs. Anna Jurančič again whipped up a batch of her “delicious Krofe” and shared them with everyone who attended the breakfast. She made them (14 doz.) Saturday morning before she boarded the bus. Maybe this doesn’t sound like much to some of you good cooks, but when you hear that she is 79 and will be 80 in December, it’s a different matter altogether, isn’t it? God Bless you, teta, and give you good health for many more years.
At 11.00 a. m., our group joined the procession to the cemetery as Father	led	us in the rosary and
prayers, and then on to the grotto, where	we	attended	the	Slovenian
Mass.	Father Kalist	had	the Mass
and sermon, and again we listened enraptured, because his sermon was so good.
At this Mass, as well as at the 7. a. m. Mass, our Frank Velikan, was commentator, and did a very good job. We’re sure Our Lord and our Blessed Mother smiled on him for participation with reverance in the Holy Sacrifice. Thank you Father Kalist for the Holy Mass and sermon, which we will try to remember and practice also' what you preached.
The dinner which followed was great, and we thank you ladies who cooked	and	prepared the	delicious
meal. There was quite a few to be fed, but all w’ent along juist fine. Thank you for all our wonderful meals, ladies.
At 1:45 p. m. we made our way to the grotto again where we participated in the lovely litany to our Blessed Lady, and we can’t put into words how our group enjoyed the entire services. The “Pete Litanije” are a form of prayers that have endeared themselves to our people in Europe, and participating at Lemont brings back many fond memories to them. Those of us, who learned of them thru our parents, have come to love the service, and feel so close to our Blessed Mother, as we sing our prayers. The few minutes spent at the Grotto during the Litany are so fleeting, that we can’t understand how the folks who don’t attend but wait elsewhere, can feel they’ve made the pilgrimage in its entirety!
Father Pelagy:	our group would
like to thank you for being so kind to us, and for leading us thru the hymns at both Masses, and during the Litany. Without your help wo couldn’t have done as well.
What a great pleasure it. was for us to listen to your God given gift,
your wonderful voice. Thank you for your friendship and help thru the two days we were there. Thank you ever so much to each and everyone there who helped to make this another memorable pilgrimage for us. God bless and repay you!
We ask our members to remember the sick who couldn’t make the trip this year. One of the faithful ones, Mrs. Mary Somrak, who has been with the group every year since the 1st pilgrmage, was unable to make it this year. She’s been very ill since December, and we missed her very much. God grant her speedy recovery. We were so happy that Mrs. Antonia Bayt was able to make it after all. She was hospitalized around Easter, and was there for several weeks. But our Lord and his Blessed Mother blessed her, and she has regained her strength enough that she made the trip by car with her son Chet, daughter-in-law Mary Ann, and her daughter Mary Lambert, who was also hospitalized early this year with back surgery. Good to see all of you with us again! Also Mrs. Sustersich and granddaughter and Rose Dugar and granddaughter, Milka Albin, Rose Ivancic, Louise Radez, and our wonderful accordian player, Pete Barbarich. We are also glad that Carrie Velikan and Martin Barbarich were able to make the trip this year.
Late in the afternoon we went to the picnic grounds and we had sausage and potica and everyone sang to the music of Pete’s accordian. We had a wonderful time.
Our trip home was one of thanksgiving for a pilgrimage that will live with us for some time, and after Frank Velikan led us in “Pete Litanije” and prayers, and Mrs. Anna Jurančič led us in singing the “Rosary” and “Way of the Cross” we then changed the tempo and Pete began serenading us with his accordian,	and	we	joined	in	the	"Židana
marela”	and	“En hribček	bom kupil”	and	many other	of	our	beautiful
Slovenian songs. Of course, after a-while we would go back to our hymns and prayers and so ended a wonderful trip to our beloved Marija Pomagaj at Lemont.
To each and everyone of our group, hope to see you again next year, and many more we hope.

Theresa Skur had a most enjoyable visit from her son, Major Anthony Skur, and his family from K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base in Michigan. They stayed for 3 weeks, and I had the pleasure of meeting them.
Mary Bostian is getting a glee club together; anyone interested, please call Mary at 481-4710.
Please ladies, come to the meetings as we need all the help we can get for the card party. Get well wishes to all our sick members.

No. 17 West Allis, Wis. Here we are back again to our own homes after such a delightful, wonderful, and educational trip to Washington, D. C.
Our heartiest thanks go to Cor-inne Leskovar and Irene Planinšek for their untiring work in planning such a successful convention and for the sight-seeing tours for our organization and guests.
The Hostess Branch No. 103 of Washington, D. C. is to be complimented for the true hospitality towards the officers, delegates and guests at the National Convention. Miss Planinšek made a perfect hostess with her warm smile and made everyone feel at home. We saw so much of Washington in such a short time, plus the delightful and delicious meals we had at the different and interesting eating places, which everyone enjoyed. Thank you again, Irene, for a most enjoyable time.
Our thanks to Liz Zefran for making our trip a lot more easier by her efficient planning and getting the travelers from all over the nation to be in a group which we enjoyed very much.
The Convention sessions were always preceded by Mass, officiated by Rev. Claude Okorn. This was every morning at the Hotel room with our officers, delegates and guests attending. Ray Anthony Marolt (my grandson) had his biggest thrill when he was asked to serve at the Holy Mass each day and also the Sunday when Rev. Okorn had Holy Mass in the Immaculate Conception Shrine Crypt. Those memories of Washington will never be forgotten.
From our West Allis group, we had our delegate, President Marion Marolt, her son Ray Anthony, Mrs. Josephine Stariha, Ann Richter, and Louis Yaklich, a nephew of our member, Kristina Kolar.
The banquet was a gala event, having such distinguished guest speakers as the Honorable Frank J. Lausche, Hon. John A. Blatnik, Hon. Frank Annunzio, Hon Ludwig Andol-sek and many others. The speakers were very inspiring with their En-
glish and Slovenian. We as Slovenians and the Slovenian Women’s Union are very proud and honored that we do have such men as them in office and we hope and pray that we can send more men of our nationality into the Capitol. The various performances throughout the program were delightful.
Thanks are extended to the friendly bus drivers. Each and everyone was very pleasant, each group claimed they had the best, but one can say “They were all tops.” As you all know it’s the heart of our nation and everyone has hopes of visiting it once.
We had a large group at the Convention, but those that could not go along and plan to go in the future, please do so. You will not regret it. Take the family along and you will find it educational as well. There are tours to be taken and you do see a lot of your Capitol.
S. W. U. had done it again! It was the 1st. Slovenian Women’s group organized; 1st in awarding scholarships; 1st. in having State Conventions, and now it was the 1st. Slovenian group to ever have a national convention in Washington, and also organize a branch there. What an achievement for our Foundress, Marie Prisland! and for the organization. We have prospered through the years and let us all unite and make the Slovenian Women’s Union even more successful and we can, as the past has proved that point.
Our Branch will hold its Misc. Card Party, on Thursday evening Sept. 28, 19G7 at 8:00 p. m. at St. Mary’s Auditorium, and we are extending an invitation to our mem. bers, friends, and neighboring branches to attend. The proceeds will go into our treasury for current expenses. Donations and prizes are always very welcome.
Get Well Wishes are sent to our sick and shut-ins, Mary Kastner, Mary Frangesch, Angeline Fuzer, Theresa Kerhin, Louise Kralj and Jennie Zalar, and Mary Kirn. Try and visit with them if you have a few spare moments, or send them a get-well or thinking-of-you card. It will make the day a little more happier knowing you are thinking of them.
The monthly meetings will be resumed on Sunday, Sept. 17th at 2:00 p. m, at St. Mary’s Hall. See you at the meeting with Convention reports. May God Bless you all!

No. 20, Joliet, III. — Our church carnival -— held three afternoons on our St. Joseph picnic grounds came to a successful conclusion. The bulletin in church reported the net profit was $12,000. I want to thank the members of our branch who participated at the Zveza stand which helped in a small way to the profit.
Zveza day in Lemont was held
this year July 16th, where members and friends come annually to this pilgrimage and were again glad to welcome and greet one another. We were also glad to see Mr. John Prisland — who attended this year with Mrs. Marie Prisland from Sheboygan, as in a few previous years Mrs. Prisland was absent due of her travel in Slovenia. Let’s hope that we shall all meet next year again.
Condolences to the family of Jean M. Tezak who passed away July 10th. Mrs. Tezak was well known here in Joliet and the surrounding area. She was a society woman, and held membership in many clubs and societies. She was active in all church and civic affairs where she held office. She was a funeral director and em-balmer and after the death of her husband 35 years ago, she managed the business on N. Indiana ave. She was preceded in death by her late sister, Mary Zalar (Joseph) and one son, George. She is survived by 4 sons and 3 sisters. Emma Shimkus, a member of Br. 24, lost her husband a few months ago, also a funeral director, in La Salle, 111. Jean M. Tezak joined in 1934, recommended by Mary C. Terlep. Our members prayed at her bier, and those accompanied her to the cemetery on her last journey were Emma Planinšek, Josephine Muster, Anna Mahkovec, Theresa Muhich and Josephine Erjavec. Condolences also' to the family of our member Rose Jagodnik from Rockdale, who lost her oldest daughter age 53 years, Rose Officer, who died in the hospital after a lengthy illness. Survived by her husband Gerald, her mother, 4 sisters and one brother preceded in death by her father, Joseph Jagodnik who died 7 months ago, her aunt Mrs. Jennie Sprengel and numerous nieces, and nephews and cousins. May all the deceased rest in peace and be rewarded in heaven.
It was reported in the local Herald-News of the naming of the “outstanding man, the military surgeon,” Capt. Lawrence A. Fagarason, son of John and Josephine Fagarason ( nee Buchar). lie was a teaching assistant in surgery at the University of Illinois and a resident physician at St. Luke’s hospital in Chicago. For 3 years he has been on active duty in the army, and later at the 17th Field Hospital in Saigon, Viet Nam. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery of the American College of Surgeons. His brother, the Rev. Kenneth Fagarason was ordained G years ago, from St. Joseph’s church and is now stationed at Bou-bonnais, 111. The brothers are grads of St. Joseph school in Joliet. They have an aunt, Agnes Ferkol, who is our old-time member. Congratulations to Dr. Fagarason and his relatives.
On June 11th, the village of Lidice in Crest Hill, a suburb of Joliet, com-
memorated the 25th anniversary of the massacre in Lidice, Czechoslovakia by the Nazis. The celebration was a great affair, and societies from Chicago and Joliet came to services at this pilgrimage shrine. One of the speakers was Gov. Otto Kerner, member of the consulate, and many others. Also our Rt. Rev Msgr., M. J. Butala, pastor of St. Joseph’s parish was present. Our members, Bernice Kostelec and Jo Goran did a splendid job in reporting and in preparation with their lassie drill team and other details for the day, which made this memorial service so successful.
Our member, Anne Schnell is recuperating in the hospital; and also, Catherine Butala. We wish both a speedy recovery as also to all other members who are on the sick list.
Irene Planinšek vacationed at home with her mother Mrs. Emma Planinšek, relieving temporarily of her heavy schedule in Washington, D. C. We were glad to see her in Lemont on Zveza Day.
Our Condolences to our vice president, Josephine Muster, whose nephew Cpl. James J. Menart of Cleveland, Ohio, died May 26th in Viet Nam, age 19 years. He was shot through the head while serving his duty for our country as a marine in the 1st Marine division. The remains were shipped to Cleveland for burial and Mrs. Muster and family drove to Cleveland for the services. He is deeply mourned by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Menart, who is also an invalid for some time. Cpl. James J. Menart is also survived by two other brothers, one a marine who is serving as a career man. The country will always be grateful for his supreme sacrifice for democracy, and may God reward him in heaven. To the survivors, we only can say, may God grant you assurance that your son did not die in vain.
Happy Birthday was sung to our Secretary Frances Gaspich and member, Mary Kunstek at the Holiday Inn in Washington, D. C. during our Convention. While dining there on May 25th, the entire group of 400 sang and our president, Emma Planinšek presented two celebrants with beautiful corsages. It was an evening well to remember.

No. 21, Cleveland, Ohio. — There is not much news to report at this time as there were no meetings in July and August. We extend our congratulations to Nell Strodtbeck who became grandmother for the 13th time, a grandson Kirk. We will commence with an 11:00 a. m. Mass in St. Martin’s Catholic church in Tower—and will have registration and “coffee and—” in the parish hall downstairs both before and after Mass. The business meeting will be in the parish hall also.
The one o’clock banquet will be held in the Soudan School gymnasium which is larger and the school has more facilities for cooking etc. We can assure all women who attend a good time—and for those who would like to make a tour of the Soudan Mine State Park this would be a good opportunity.

Br. No. 33, Duluth, Minn. A small group attended our August meeting called for the purpose of making plans to attend Minnesota Zveza Day in Soudan, Sept. 10th. Surprisingly, the bus was nearly filled as many called in ahead of time to place their reservations. We are looking forward to another wonderful day which we have every year and in visiting with our sister members of the Minnesota branches. We shall be most happy to have Corinne Leskovar as guest speaker from the Supreme Office.
A nice lunch was served by a committee chairman, Mary Popovich. Prizes were awarded while sipping our coffee. Our convention was in the topic. We shall forever have fond memories of the marvelous convention in Washington, D. C. and the very interesting tours planned for us.
There wasn’t a gripe of dissatisfaction from anyone who attended. Much credit to Br. No. 102, Washington, D. C. for the marvelous job and their cordiality. Special thanks to Irene Planinšek and Corinne Leskovar for their many hours of hard work and in and in undertaking such a large responsibility. Also a big thank you to Liz Zefran for the splendid work she did in transportation. Wo are proud of these young
ladies, you can rest assured. Our thanks to Congressman John A. Blatnik who was so cordial to the delegation. We are proud of you. You made us feel very important. Those who have pictures or movies of convention activities, please bring them to our September 6th meeting where all can see them.
Recently, death snatched from our midst, one of our charter members, Mrs. Anna Vesel, whom we all loved. She was a woman of few words, she would never hurt anyone’s feelings. Very cooperative in every respect. Very faithful in attending meetings. She will not only be missed by her family, but by all her friends. She is survived by four daughters and one son. One daughter, Rose Krizaj, is also a member of our branch. God rest her soul. Our sincerest sympathies to the Vesel family.
Our member, Sophie Tomich, lost her husband George after a long illness. May his soul rest in peace. Our condolences to the Tomich family.
It would be wonderful to remember our sick members with letters or ciards. No. 42, Maple Hgts. O. — Now that everyone is enjoying the beautiful summer weather and vacations, our “Mother of the Year” dinner is but a fond memory. It was a delightful meal prepared by Angela Perko and her assistants, namely, Angela’s daughter, and granddaughter, Betty Ann Kastelic and Millie Lipnos.
Congratulations and our best wishes are extended to members celebrating wedding anniversaries; Mary and Fred Filips, 40 years; Olga and Will Ponikvar, 30 years; Lillian and Ed Sadowski, 13 years; Finn and Frank Stavec, 25 years. May all of you share many, many more years of wedded bliss.
Our past president and one of our longest members, Frances Legan, with her husband, Joe, had a memorable visit with their son, Lt. Col. Stan Legan in Rochester, N. Y. During their visit, Stan took his parents to Niagara Falls. This was Frances’ and Joe’s first honeymoon in their 53 years of married life.
We should like to welcome two of our newest members into our lodge, Carol and Jo Anne Kastelic, two
daughters-in-law of our president.
Carol and Bob Kastelic and their 5 children are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their AFS student from the Philippines. Certainly this will prove to be a very eventful and memorable year for all of them.
Our October meeting has been changed to September in as much as we must make arrangements for our upcoming bake sale. We are looking forward to seeing many members at this meeting and also to enjoy krofe which Mrs, Perko and Millie Lipnos have promised us to bake in observance of their birthdays.

No. 46, St. Louis, Mo. — Our last get together before summer vacation was May 7th, Mother’s Day celebration. There were 26 ladies present and our Mother of the Year, Mrs. Mary Moeningman, had w'ith her, as guests her daughters Susan and Clarice and her daughter-in-law. Cookie.
Our Treasurer, Mrs. Helen Skoff, and her niece, Mrs. Lorraine Petrovich, attended the convention in Washington, D. C., and had a most enjoyable time.
On June 17th our member, Mrs. Mary Grabian’s granddaughter, Kathleen Carole Chaperlo, was married to Thomas Michael Jaskiewicz, and on June 24th, our member, Susan Jo Moeningman, was married to Frank Michael Hallemann. Both weddings were very lovely and we wish to extend our congratulations and best wishes for every happiness to both couples.
Our next meeting will be held on the 2lnd Sunday in September, at the home of our President. Let us all try to attend, since we haven’t been together all summer. Hoping to see you then,

No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio. — Since we didn’t have a meeting in July, there isn’t too much to report. It hasn’t been too good for some of our members as there has been quite a bit of illness in our branch. Frances Sietz, is still recuperating, but very slowly. We are all praying that she will be with us very soon. Her husband is on our sick list also, and had to retire from his job, due to illness. All I can say is, "when it rains, it pours” for some of our members’ families.
Rose Želodec, is progressing beautifully, and will be on the road to recovery soon. Rose’s sister, Ann Kum-se was very unfortunate in July. At her place of employment, (a Beauty Supply concern) she was robbed and beaten unmercifully. She was attacked by a man who had no respect for anyone at all. She was confined to the hospital for a few weeks, with
two broken jaws, bruised eyes, and bruised in other places also. Luckily, Ann was able to come out of it, and is now convalescing at home. Ann, we do hope that you will be back in the groove shortly.
The good news that I have to> report is, that, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Turek went on a well-deserved vacation to Minnesota to visit Mrs. Turek’s mother
Since our picnic meeting took place in August, I can’t make a report on it, till next month.

Br. No. 52, Kitzville, Minn. — Here we go again — our vacations are over and back into the old grind a-gain. We resumed our meeting at the Little Grove and decided to have a White Elephant Sale at our next meeting so please bring along all your unwanted articles and pennies for the sale.
Rose Chiodi, our secretary, told us about her trip to Washington and what a lovely time she had and also showed us pictures. Well, I guess that concluded our business session and Sister Josephine Oswald led us in prayer.
Our social of the evening then took place at which time a very delightful lunch was served by our hostess Sisters: Alberta Russo, Dorothy Russo, and Julia Mancuso.
Prizes were awarded to Sisters Frances Oswald, Josephine Oswald. Rose Chiodi, Josephine Palitano, Florence Techer, Alice Baratto, Margaret Kochevar, Mary Musech, and door prize was won by sister Genevieve Zidarich. We had a very nice turnout for our first meeting. We will be looking forward to seeing more of you at our next meeting.
We congratulate Sister Rose Trombly, our Recording Secretary, on the marriage of her granddaughter, Roberta Pascuzzi to Ray Pelkey. May they have many blissful years of married life and may God bless them both.

No. 55, Girard, Ohio. — Greetings from Girard; we are on our second month of vacation. There are no reports of illness or death among our members at this time. We shall thank God for that, and ask His continued Blessings upon all.
President Barbara Umeck wishes to announce the September committee; namely, Gala Hlasta, chairman, assisted Mines. Helen Brdek, Frances Wodogaza, Mary Gabrovšek, and Mary Nigut. Hope to see all the members at this meeting and also at meetings in the remaining months of the year.
Our Vice President and Recording Sec. was telling me what, a lovely vacation she had. Her daughter, Sister Jeanne, accompanied her. They drove to Dunlap, 111. and stayed at son, John’s home. They made a visit to the Supreme Office of K.S.KJ. in Joliet, 111., stopped at Notre Dame to visit nephew, Brother Cyril Yelenc, and on to Gary, Ind. to visit relatives. Next stop was Lorain, O. to visit Brother Anthony and family, then to Suffix, Ohio for a visit to son, Thomas and family.
Sister Jeanne has been with the Ursuline Convent 21 years. With the new law, it enabled her to vacation with her mother for the first time. They had a wonderful time together.
We hear Mr. and Mrs. Edward U-meek (Honey Riacick) of California are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Joseph U-meck, Sr. and family. Mr. and Mis. Joseph Cemich and family are making a trip to Florida. Mr. and Mrs. William Umeck and family vacationed in Canada. Mr. and Mrs. John Matuszewski and family will vacation also in Canada. Mrs. Mary Lukz is busy these days preparing for the marriage of her son, Frank.
Now for the highlights in the Me-lialco family. My son and his wife, Janet, were blessed with a son, July 29th, their second son, which makes me a very happy Grandma again.

No. 89, Oglesby, III. At the August meeting Mesdames Frances Nemeth and Mary Cenkar gave a fine report on Lemont Zveza Day and said it was one of the finest they attended.
The annual auction will take place at the next meeting. Everyone is requested to help our bowlers in the candy project. Mrs. Josephine Morrison received the sunshine prize.

No. 101, Bedford Hgts, O. — Hello, gals! Time for our annual card party is rolling around. It’s going to be held at the Aurora Road School on Oct. 13th at 8. p. m. “WHAT’S COOKING IN CANONS-BURG” is the attractive title of a-nother marvelous cookbook sent to me by Mrs. Lucille Smith of Branch No. 71, Strabane, Pa. It was my pleasure to meet I.ucille at the Convention when we, naturally, talked about food. She happened to mention her cucumber and potato salad which sounded delicious to me since I love cucumbers especially when home-grown. She promised to send the recipe to me which she thoughtfully did along with a wonderful cookbook of favorite recipes presented by the Christian Mothers of St. Patrick’s parish, Can-onsburg, Pa. The delicious orange cooky recipe from this oookbook is hers and is just what the youngsters will enjoy eating coming home from school. Here are the two recipes:
CUCUMBER AND POTATO SALAD
1 to 2 cucumbers
1 medium onion
6 to 8 medium potatoes
2 tablespoons salt
2	tablespoons salad oil 1 to 2 tablespoons cider vinegar (diluted if desired)
Pepper to taste Peel cucumbers and slice very thin. Add sliced onion. Sprinkle with two tablespoonsful of salt, mix and let stand for 2 hours. Boil the potatoes with skins. When cooked, drain off the water; let stand until cold. Peel and cut into thin slices. Squeeze the cucumber mixture with your hands forcing out all the liquid. Mix the potatoes with the cucumbers and add salad oil, cider vinegar diluted with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water. Black pepper and more salt may be added if desired.
ORANGE COOKIES
1 cup Crisco 1% cups sugar
2 eggs
3 teaspoons baking powder
1	cup buttermilk or sour milk 41/2 cups all purpose flour
1	teaspoon baking soda % teaspoon salt Rind and juice of 1 orange
Cream together shortening and sugar; add eggs, beat. Add rind and juice of 1 orange. Sift dry ingredients, add alternately with milk. Mix well. Drop rounded teaspoonsful 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees. While warm frost with orange icing.
Orange Icing:
Blend 2 cups sifted confectioners’ sugar with 1 tablespoon grated orange rind and about 2 tablespoons orange juice until smooth. For Orange Butter Icing add 2 tablespoons of softened butter.
HOME HAPPINESS CAKE Recipes are not always made entirely of food. Mrs. Frances Sietz, president of Branch No. 50, Cleveland, Ohio shares this one where the main ingredients are happiness and wisdom. Take one cup of common sense A half cup of justice One and one-half cups of love sifted with one and a half teaspoons of mutual confidence Add two large portions of sense of humor, beaten separately
Spice to taste with wit and nonsense
Bake in a moderate oven of warm approval
Ice with generous appreciation * * *
Slovenia has long been known as the Yugoslav apple growing region. A large part of Slovenia especially the districts around Ptuj, Celje, Kranj and Trbovlje, owing to their alpine climate, is ideal for apple-growing.
As special attention is paid to the growing of apples here, Slovenian experts have lately succeeded in obtaining several new kinds of high-
quality apples which are now being propagated.
Therefore apples are also a favorite fruit in Slovenia as in this country.
The Yugoslav Cookbook includes two nutritious simple apple recipes: BAKED APPLES WITH HONEY Wash smooth, firm apples and core them. Fill cavities with honey. Place in an ovenproof glass dish, sprinkle with wine or water and bake at 375 degrees F., about 20 minutes. Boil several tablespoons of water with a little dash of sugar and 1 teaspoon of butter, pour over the baked apples and sex’ve.
BAKED APPLESAUCE
Serves 6.
2	pounds apples Water 1% tablespoons butter % cup sugar, reserving 4 tablespoons for meringue
2	egg whites
Few drops of lemon juice Peel and quarter the apples. Cook them in a little water until tender. Rub through a fine sieve , add sugar and add a little butter while the apple sauce is warm. Pour into a buttered ovenproof glass dish. Beat the egg whites until stiff, gradually adding sugar. Spoon over the apple sauce and bake in the oven, 300 de-rees F., until meringue is golden brown. Serve hot or cold. Or: fold egg whites beaten with sugar into 21 cups apple sauce. Heap in sherbet glasses and decorate with 2 or 3 maraschino cherries and chill.

Visoko v gorah je živela mati s svojim sinom. Njegov oče se je ponesrečil pri podiranju drevja. Sin je bil zelo bister. Ker je bil sinček edinček, ga je mati imela še toliko rajši. Morda preveč. Razvajala ga je. Izpolnila mu je skoraj vsako željo. To ga je pripeljalo do trmoglavosti.
Nekega dne, ko je bil posebno slabo razpoložen, se mu je zahotelo noža, da bi z njim nekaj izrezljal. Mati mu noža nikoli ni hotela dati. Tudi tokrat je ostala trdna. Rekla je: “Noža ti ne dam pod nobeno ceno.” Sina je ta materina odklonitev silno razjezila. Začel je kričati, jokati od jeze, cepatati z nogami in metati predmete po tleh. Ker mati kljub temu ni popustila se je začel ves besen zaganjati vanjo in vpiti: “Sovražim te, sovražim te!” V tem stanju je zbežal z doma v bližnji gozd in ves čas ponavljal: “Sovražim te, sovražim te!” Pritekel je na majhno jaso, od koder se je videl njegov dom. Stopil je na preperel štor in iz vsega grla zaklical: “Sovražim te, sovražim te!”
Tedaj se je zgodilo nekaj čudnega. Čez čas je zaslišal od visoke jelke odgovor:	“Sovražim te, sovražim te!”
Spreletelo ga je. Nato pa od nekoliko oddaljenega gozdiča zopet:	“Sovražim te, sovražim te!” To ga je zbe-
galo. Pa še ni bilo zadosti. Od visokih pečin sem, kjer so leteli črni vrani, se je slišalo:	“Sovražim te, sovražim
te!” Prebledel je in začel se je tresti po vsem telesu. Pa še ni bilo konec. Od visokega skalovja se je slišalo kakor da bi kdo premišljeval:	“sovražim te, sovražim te!”
Fant se je od strahu sesedal. V potrdilo vseh “sovražim te, sovražim te!” še je iz daljne doline oglasilo: “Sovražim te, sovražim te!” Te strašne besede “Sovražim,” fant še svoj dan ni slišal. Mati mu je vedno ponavljala: "Kako te imam rada, ljubček” in “Življenje bi dala zate” a sedaj ta "sovražim”. To je strašno. Potem pa še “te”. Prav mene mora sovražiti. Tega ne prenesem več. Vstal je in si s prsti zataknil ušesa. Samo da ne bi več slišal te grde besede. Stekel je, kar so ga noge nesle, proti domu.
Neki pesnik je zapisal: Glas tvoj od gora odmeva, srce se ti iz del odseva. Dingi del zgodbe tega fanta bomo objavili prihodnjič.
ZVEZIN DAN V LEMONTU LEP USPEH!
Star pregovor pravi: vse pride — vse mine! Tako je letos minil tudi naš Zvezin dan, na kar so nam o stali spet lepi spomini. Vreme je bilo ravno prav toplo in sonce je, kakor po želji, ogrelo ozračje. Z u-cieležbo smo bile tudi zadovoljne in se vsem prav lepo zahvaljujemo. Posebno še tistim, ki pridete vsako leto na Zvezino romanje in piknik na lepe ameriške Brezje.
Prav lepa hvala čč.oo. Frančiškanom za sodelovanje in priprave. Sveto mašo v groti je letos daroval č. p. Kalist. Imel je lepo pridigo, ki je bila velik užitek za vse navzoče. Č. g. pater Pelagi je s svojim izbornim glasom lepo vodil v skupnem petju in s tem povzdignil svečanost božje daritve.
Vesele smo bile, da je bila med nami naša ustanoviteljica Mrs. Pris-land v spremstvu soproga Mr. John Prisland ter prva podpredsednica Mrs. Marie Floryan, Irene Planinšek iz Washingtonu, D C. nas je veselo iz-nenadila z obiskom in vse, ki so jo srečale ob času konvencije, ker je bila do vseh zelo prijazna in po-strežljiva. Mrs. Frances Plesko, predsednica pod št. 12 je pripeljala 37 romaric v posebnem avtobusu iz Milwaukee. Kakor vsako leto smo imele zopet lep obisk iz Indianapolis od-kjer so prišli v posebnem avtobusu. Od tam pridejo že v soboto, tako imajo več časa za cerkvene pobožnosti. Res je veliko veselje srečati po-setnike od blizu in daleč. Najlepša hvala in upanje, da se vidimo zopet prihodnje leto!
Kot običajno imamo popoldne na hribčku piknik, kjer se v prosti naravi razvije lepa zabava. Vesele smo bilo velike udeležbe na pikniku. Med nami je bila tudi naša glavna tajnica Mrs. Albina Novak, ki se je tisto jutro vrnila iz obiska v starem kraju.
Letos smo imele več novih pomočnic pri serviranju okrepčil, ker so šle naše navadne delavke na izlet v Ca-
nado in so nove prijele za delo ter lepo postregle vsem navzočim. Naše požrtvovalne članice so napekle dobre potice, da se je kar stopilo v ustih. Mrs. Mary Marinič je prišla iz McHenry in prinesla štiri potice (lansko leto pa kar 10). Mrs. Ana Zorko, ki je običajno med najbolj Pridnimi v kuhinji je napekla pet potic, Mrs. Koželj pa štiri, Mrs. Julia Pavlin in Angela Zugič pa vsaka po eno. Mrs. Mary Polden je pripeljala stvari iz Chicage in tudi ves dan pomagala isto tudi Mrs. Jennie Kitz je vozila stvari ter pridno pomagala, kakor tudi njen sin. Mrs. Theresa Potokar in soprog John, sta tudi pripeljala z avtom delavke. Mrs. Potokar je delala pridno v kuhinji ves dan. Pridno sta pomagali tudi Katie Srebrnak in Mary Garbais. Jennie Kovačič vsako leto pomaga pri prodaji listkov za jedila in pijačo in isto pridna je pri blagajni Sophie Bogolin. Pri srečkah so bile pa Frances Zibert, Alvi Jerin, Alma Hel-der in Albina Novak. Govejo pečenko sem pa jaz že doma pripravila.
Naša dobrosrčna članica Mrs. Gi-zella Hozjan je poklonila krasen “housecoat”, za kar se ji prisrčno zahvaljujemo. Mrs. Anna Zorko je pa med nami najbolj pridna za prodajat listke in tako je šla od enega do drugega z listki. Dodala je eno veliko orehovo potico ter razpečala lepo število srečk. Dar od Mrs. Hozjan je po sreči dobila Mrs. Marie Floryan iz West Allis; potico je dobila Mrs. Theresa Ivanšek. Vsem, ki so pri tej prodaji pomagali prav iskrena hvala.
Vsako leto nam pridno pomagata Mr. Ludvik Leskovar in naš John Železnikar, ki pridno strežeta pri pijači. Mr. Joe Zorko je tudi pomagal ves dan.
Da imajo otroci lepo zabavo, poskrbi naša marljiva urednice Mrs. Corinne Leskovar, ki pripravi in vodi raznovrstne tekme. To delo njej lepo pristoja, ker ima rada otroke in po-
zna njihov sentiment.
Velike važnosti je za nas, da je v točilnici vse preskrbljeno za serviranje. To poslugo nam je prav lepo poskrbel č. g. pater Blaž Čemažar. Najlepša mu hvala in vsem, ki pri tej pripravi pomagajo.
Vsem in vsakemu posebej, ki ste prišli v nedeljo IG. julija na ameriške Brezje izrekam v imenu podružnice prisrčno zahvalo. Bil je res lep dan in obilo zabave za mladino in starejše. Veselo razpoloženje so nam prinesli gostje iz Indianapolis, ki so imeli s seboj harmonikarja, ki je prišel tudi na hrib igrat. Saj so se takoj zbrali okoli njega tisti, ki radi pojejo in se je naša pesem veselo razlegala vse na okrog. Najlepša hvala g. Frank Velikan, ki pride z grupo iz Indianapolis vsako leto in je tudi pri sveti maši pomagal.
K zaključku tople zahvale želim pustiti priporočilo, da že sedaj odločite biti med nami na ameriških Brezjah tretjo nedeljo, to bo 21. julija, 1968. Vsak, ki enkrat pride, se rad povrne!

St. 6, Barberton, Ohio. Naša zadnja seja je bila pri prijazni sestri tajnici, Jennie Ožbolt. Postregla nam je z okusnim prigrizkom, za kar se ji vse navzoče prisrčno zahvaljujemo.
Glavno razmotrivanje je biloi o bli-žujoči državni konvenciji in proslavi 40 letnice obstoja podružnice. Sklepi kažejo, da bomo imele nekaj posebnega in vam lahko obetamo prav lep program. Vstopnice za banket so že v prodaji. Ta trud sta prevzeli sestri Ožbolt in Okoliš in obiskujete članice in znance po domovih, da bomo imele lepši uspeh ter vam bosta postregli s tiketi. Oddani bodo tudi lepi dobitki (door prizes). Zborovanje konvencije se prične ob pol dveh popoldne in banket, oziroma slavnostna večerja, pa ob štirih. Pričakuje se tudi poset članic iz Clevelanda. Lep obisk
V	glavnem uredu smo dobili odličen obisk pred nekaj tedni. Na potu iz Baragove dežele sta se ustavila g. Erik in gospa Nika Kovačič z ljubko hčerko Bernadette. Gospa in hčerka sta članici podružnice št. 103 v Washington, D. C. Prav lepa hvala, ker ste si vzeli čas za obisk Chicage in naše pisarne.	A.	N.
S.Ž.Z. VABI NA IZLET V LETU 1968
Kakor ste brali v Zarji, smo letos imeli več datumov za skupne izlete v Slovenijo. Prva večja skupina je odpotovala 28. maja; druga je bilo na 1. junija; potem 12. junija, takrat nas je šlo precejšno število in zopet na 21. junija, 28. junija, 12. julija, 27. julija in 3. avgusta. Izleti so bili po 3-4-5-G-8 in 10 tednov. Vse skupine so srečno potovale in se brez vsake neudobnosti vrnili.
Dobili smo že več vprašanj glede skupnih izletov v prihodnjem letu, 19G8. Za pričakovati je, da bomo zopet dobili posebne popuste v ceni za skupine, ki bodo štele nad 50 potnikov.
Zahvaljujemo se Kolandrovi potovalni agenciji, ki nam je preskrbela vse potrebno, namreč vozne listke ter aranžirali prijetne izlete. Kdor se je poslužil, katergakoli izleta, se je vsak pohvalno izrazil in pripomba je bila splošna: da drugače ne bi nikdar videli vse zanimive kraje za tako nizke cene. Št. 15, Cleveland, O. — V zadnjem dopisu sem poročala, da nas je za vedno zapustila članica in par dni po tem pogrebu, to je bilo na 3. julija, smo spremile kar dve na zadnji poti. Pokojna Mary Zupančič je zapustila veliko družino, sorodnikov in prijateljev. Druga je bila sestra Mary Krulc v visoki starosti 92 let. Iskreno sožalje izrekamo vsem preostalim. Pokojnima sestram pa naj ljubi Bog podeli večni počitek.
Umrl je tudi oče naše članice Lucille Baxa. Naše sožalje hčerki in vsem sorodnikom. Očku pa večno plačilo-!
V	bolnici se nahaja sestra Verona Škufca. Njej in vsem bolnim želimo skorajšnjo okrevanje. Naj ji ljubi Bog in Marija izprosita ljubo zdravje.
Počitnice od sej bodo kmalu v kraju. Prihodnja seja bo v septembru. Upam, da se boste vse zdrave vrnile od počitnic ter prišle v lepem številu na sejo! Pozdravljam vse članice SŽZ!

Št. 20, Joliet, III. — Naš cerkveni karnival se je letos zopet uspešno za ključil; za tri pol dneve je bilo dobička $12,000.00. Najlepša hvala vsem članicam, ki so delale pri Zvezini stojnici, kar je gotovo pomagalo k uspehu.
Zvezin dan v Lemontu, dne IG. julija, je privabil romarje od blizu in daleč, saj je lep užitek pozdraviti znance in prijatelje. Med nami je bila tudi Mrs. Marie Prisland v spremstvu soproga John-a. Upam, da se prihodnje leto zopet snidemo na ameriških Brezjah.
Naše sožalje družini pokojne Jean M. Težak, ki je odšla v večnost 10. julija. Mrs, Težak je bila poznana med nami. Bila je vneta društvenica in odbornica pri raznih klubih v mestu. Pri društvu sv. Genovefe je predsedovala 40 let. Mož ji je umrl pred 25 leti. Po njegovi smrti je sama prevzela delo v podjetju, namreč v pogrebnem zavodu, katerega sedaj vodijo sinovi, kakor tudi druga podjetja. Njena pokojna sestra je bila žena pok. glavnega tajnika KSKJ Mr. Joseph Zalarja. Zapustila je štiri sinove ter sestro Emmo Shimkus, ki vodi pogrebni zavod v La Salle, kateri je tudi letos umrl soprog. Zapušča tudi več sester in bratov, ki žalujejo za njo. Mrs. Težak je pristopila v Zvezo leta 1934, vpisana po M a iy C. Terlep.
Najstarejšo hčerko Rose Officer, je izgubila naša sestra Rose Jagodnik iz Rockdale v starosti 53 let. Bila je bolna delj časa. Zapustila je mater, moža, štiri sestre in brata ter teto Jennie Sprengel in več sorodnikov. Njen oče, Joseph Jagodnik, je umrl pred sedmini meseci.
Vsem preostalim sorodnikom družine Težak in Jagodnik izrekamo globoko sožalje. Pokojnima naj da ljubi Bog večno plačilo!

versity of Illinois in resident zdravnik v St. Lukes bolnišnici v Chicagi ter ima tri leta vojne službe in se nahajal v Vietnam in Saigon. Imenovan je kot Diplomate za odbor a-meriških zdravnikov, itd. Prejel je nešteto lepih priznanj za človekoljubne zasluge. Njegov brat, Kenneth, jo duhovnik, ki je daroval prvo sveto mašo pred šestimi leti v naši farni cerkvi sv. Jožefa. Oba sta pohajala v osnovno šolo- pri sv. Jožefu. Naše iskrene čestitke Captain Lawrence Fagarason, ponosnim staršem, teti in vsem sorodnikom. Mati je iz poznane Buchat jeve družine na Marble Street.
Dne 11. junija so v vasi Lidice, v Crest Hill, v bližini Jolieta, imeli spominski dan, ozirom« 25 letnico odkar je bila vas požgana na Češkem po nacistih. Vsako leto se zberejo na tem prostoru v spomin padlim v zadnji vojni in letos je bil program bolj obširen, ker je poteklo že 25 let ter je nastopil med slavnimi govorniki go-verner Kerner ter več važnih oseb in med njimi tudi naš g. župnik M. J. Butala. Naši agilni članici Bernice Kostelec in Jo Goran sta sodelovali pri programu. Nastopile so vojaške skupine, vežbalni krožki v uniformah in narodnih nošah iz Chicage, ter s tem pozdignili spominsko slavnost, ki se je končala v farnem parku sv. Jožefa.
V bolnišnici se nahajati sestri Anne Schnell in Catherine Butala. Njima in vsem bolnim sestram želimo hitrega okrevanja.
V veselje nam je bilo imeti v mestu Miss Ireno Planinšek iz Washing-tonu, D. C., ki je prišla na kratke počitnice k mami Mrs. Emmi Planinšek. Udeležila se je tudi romanja v Lemontu.
Naše sožalje podpresednici Josephine Muster ob smrti nečaka Cpl. James Monart, ki je dal svoje življenje za domovino, star 19 let. Smrt ga je vzela v Vietnamu, kjer je podlegel je ranam v glavi 2G. maja, 1967. Prepeljan je bil v Cleveland za pokop. Mrs. Muster in družina je šla na njegov pogreb. Zapustil je žalujoče starše Mr. in Mrs. Joe Menart
PRIDITE MED NAS 24. SEPTEMBRA!
ter dva brata od katerih je eden pri marinskem oddelku. Globoko sožalje vsem sorodnikom. Uverjeni bodite, da njegova žrtev ni bila zaman.
Naša tajnica Frances Gaspich in Mary Kunstek sta slavili svoj rojstni dan ob času konvencije v Washing-tonu. Predsednica Emma Planinšek je njima pripela lepe šopke in smo skupno jima zapeli “Happy Birthday”. Ta prizor v Holiday Inn bo gotovo ostal vsem v lepem spominu.

Št. 24, La Salle, III. — Pri nas imamo te dni neznosno vročino, toda vemo, da se bliža jesen in takrat bo gotovo bolj ugodno vreme. Počitniška doba je tudi v kraju ter upam, da ste prišli vsi srečno nazaj. Naša sestra Josephine Radi se je vrnila iz stare domovine in je zelo vesela, da je šla po 53. letih. Pravi, da se je dobro počutila in razveselila vse sorodnike z obiskom.
Naše globoko sožalje sestri Emi Šimkus, kateri je umrla sestra Jean Težak v Jolietu. Sestra Ana Teselič žaluje za bratom Josipom Jagadžin-ski. Sestri Mary Šetina je pa umrl mož Frank, ko je sedel na vrtu doma je padel v nezavest ter bil mrtev. To je bilo 1. avgusta. Vsem preostalim izrekamo iskreno sožalje. Pokojnim pa naj bo Bog dober plačnik.
Prihodnja seja se bo vršila v oktobru. Prosim vas, da se udeležite, ker imamo več važnih stvari za rešiti. Tiste, ki dolgujete na asesmentu prosim lepo, da bi prišle poravnat, ker leto gre hitro h koncu.
Teta štorklja je vasovala pri družini Mr. in Mrs. Ksiazak ter pustila zalo hčerko v spomin. Dekliško ime matere je bilo' Pauli Šerman. Nadalje se je ustavila pri Mr. in Mrs. Grinvald in pustila sinčka. Dekliško ime matere je bilo Barbana Porikas.
Vsem želimo ljubo zdravje!

Št. 26, Pittsburgh, Pa. — Poletje in počitniška doba bo kmalu v kraju. Konec bo tudi zuniajnih aktivnosti in piknikov ter pričele se bodo zno-tranje prireditve. Med prvimi bo naša državna konvencija, ki se bo vršila v nedeljo 24. septembra. Letos bo gostiteljica naša podružnica št. 26.
Sestanek zastopnic je napovedan m ob dveh popoldne. Pridite ob času, ker ob treh bo serviran banket in prosta zabava. Vse to se bo vršilo v Slovenskem domu na 57. cesti. Prostora bo dovolj za veliko družbo, zato nas razveselite z veliko udeležbo.

pridno pripravljamo za državno konvencijo, ki se bo vršila v nedeljo 24. septembra. Prosi se vse zastopnice podružnic, da pridete ob času za zborovanje, ki se bo pričelo točno ob dveh. Slavnostni banket bo pa ob treh popoldne. Prav gotovo se bomo potrudile, da boste vsi zadovoljno postreženi in imeli lep užitek od obiska med nami. Naša glavna tajnica Mrs. Albina Novak nas bo ta dan obiskala in bo tudi ona vesela, če bo lepa udeležba.
Kakor je bilo poročano po časopisih, se je naš pittsburški moški oktet podal v Slovenijo to poletje, kjer so podali več koncertov. Sprejem je bil zelo lep: vsepovsod, kjer so se ustavili so bili pozdravljeni s šopki in raznovrstnimi darili. Ker je bil prostor smo se tudi prijatelji pevcev pridružili izletu in smo bili deležni lepili sprejemov vse povsod, kjer smo se ustavili.
Imeli smo priliko obiskati tudi svojo rojstno vas Belči vrh in tam živeče sorodnike in prijatelje. Videli smo, da morajo kmeti ,trdo delati ker mladina je šla v mesta za delom in zaslužkom, starejši se morajo sami matrat, da kaj pridelajo. Po mestih je drugače, tam imajo ugodno življenje. Hoteli so moderni, kakor po A-meriki, ljudje pa vljudni do gostov.
ša glavna tajnica, Mrs. A. Novak, to bo njen prvi obisk po dolgih letih in nam bo vsem v veselje in ponos.
Na rokah imamo tikete za banket, ker je važno, da vemo za število gostov, to želijo naše kuharice, ker hočejo vas prav dobro postreči. Zdaj je vse drago in nočemo, da bi pripravile premalo in tudi ne, da bi nam ostajalo. Čas za prijave je do 17. in 18. septembra, to je vsaj en teden preti banketom. Lahko se zanesete, da bo vse odlično pripravljeno.

Št. 71, Strabane, Pa. — Lepo pozdravljam vse direktorice, odbornice in članice SŽZ! Konvencija je za nami, toda lepi spomini bodo živeli dolgo časa v naših srcih. Smelo trdim, da je bila 14. redna konvencija ena najlepših in najbolj zanimivih, kar se jih spominjam. Lepa hvala glavni tajnici, ki je predlagala, da se vrši konvencija v naši prestolici ter nas vse navdušila, da smo glasovale za Washington, D. C. Z njeno hčerko Corinne Leskovar, ki je zmožna vsake naloge se ni ustrašila pred-
Srečanje z našo družino nam je bilo v veliko veselje in ločitev je bila težka, ker si vsak misli, morda se nikdar več ne vidimo.
Obiskali smo vas Dragatuš; v nedeljo smo šli k sv. maši in nismo mogli verjeti svojim očem, da je cerkev, ki je bila včasih najlepša v okolici, sedaj v žeto slabem stanju, posledice vojske so še vidne. Pozdravili smo se z župnikom g. Leopoldem Lončaričem in ga vidli, kako je zdelan, roke žuljave in v delovni obleki.
V	l a rov žu je podrl dve sobi in popravil streho. Denar ima samo tisti, kar dobi od Amerikancev. Farani so po večini stari	in revni	in	tako se
sam g.	župnik	trudi na	vse	načine,
da bi mu poslali vsaj nekaj dolarjev za popravo cerkve ali pa darovali za svete maše. Saj pisma pridejo sedaj v redu v prave roke in tudi na banki lahko zamenjajo dolarje za dinarje. V tem oziru je zdaj tam vse v redu.	Pisma	naslovite	na	gospoda

videnega, dela. V Washingtonu je pa bila pripravljena prevzeti veliko in odgovorno delo marljiva Irene Planinšek, ki ima tudi prirojeno ljubezen do Zveze od svoje mamice Mrs. Eme Planinšek. Ves program je bil imenitno sestavljen in izpeljan. Bilo nam je v veliko veselje osebno se srečati z osebami, ki so na zelo važnih in odgovornih uradih in to v senatu in kongresu. Vem, da nas je veliko število, ki ne bi nikdar dosegle priložnost biti v tako imenitni družbi do-stvojanstvenikov kot smo bili ob tem času. Program na banketu je bil prvovrsten. Vsem je bilo v ponos, da smo na tako pomenljiv način preše netile našo ustanoviteljico z velikim šopkem novih članic. Vsem, ki ste k tem uspehu pomagale izrekamo iskrene čestitke na dobro izvršenim delom.
Pri nas se pripravljamo za državno konvencijo, ki bo v nedeljo 24. septembra v Slovenskem domu na 57. cesti v Pittsburghu. Toplo priporo čam vsem odbornicam in članicam u-deležbo na Pennsylvania State Convention !

št. 79, Enumclaw, Wash. — V veselje mi je poročati, da sva se z hčerko udeležili 14. redne konvencije v Washingtonu, kjer je bilo tako lepo in zanimivo, da se ne da popisati. Najlepše je bilo v veličastni kate
ZAPISNIK 14. NARODNE KONVENCIJE, S. Ž. Z.
14. redna konvencija Slovenske Ženske Zveze se vrši v hotelu Washington Hilton v prestolnem mestu od četrtka 25. maja do sobote 27. maja, 1967.
Konvencija se je pričela v četrtek ob 2:30 popoldne v Kristalni dvorani hotela ob navzočnosti glavnih odbornic, in državnih predsednic. Po pozdravu predsednice, je častna straža Kadetk Marie Prisland izobesila ameriško in slovensko Zastavo ter vodila Prisežno Izjavo. Duhovni svetovalec č. g. Klaudij Okorn je vodil molitev. Predsednica pozove odbor za poveritve, da poda poročilo.
Predsednica poverilnega odbora poroča, da je overovljenih navzočnost 19 glavnih odbornic ter 52 redno izvoljenih delegatinj, skupno šteje konvencija 71 članic. Po izjavi navzočnosti vseh delegatinj, predsednica imenuje v skladu s pravili konvenčne tajnice: gl. taj. Albina Novak in urednica Corinne Leskovar, ki bosta vodile tudi zapisnik konvencije.
Predsednica nato imenuje konvenčne odbore. (Imena odborov ter članice posameznih odborov so objavljena v angleškem zapisniku, zato tukaj niso ponovljena. Tudi i-mena vseh navzočih glavnih odbornic in delegatinj so objavljena v angleškem besedilu zapisnika.)

POROČILO GLAVNE PREDSEDNICE
Iskren pozdrav g. p. Okorn, glavne odbornice, dele-gatinje, članice in prijatelji.
Dobrodošli na 14 narodni konvenciji SŽZ, ki se vrši tukaj v naši ameriški prestolici.
Najprej se želim zahvaliti preds. št. 103 Ireni Planinšek in vsem članicam podružnice za njihov trud, da nam bodo omogočile prijetno bivanje in nepozabne spomine.
Moje konvenčno poročilo je bilo objavljeno v Zarji v mesecu aprilu. Tudi so v našem glasilu moja mesečna poročila o delovanju za Zvezo, ki mi je bila vedno zelo pri srcu. Mnoge izmed vas se morda čudite kako to, da imamo na programu samo 14 ur namenjenih konvenč-nim zborovanjem v treh konvenčnih dnevov. V resnici lahko se v tem času opravi vse delo,	če	se	boste	vse potrudile, da boste govorile stvarno in	s	predhodnim	pre-
mislekom ter napravile sklepe na poslovni način.
Moja iskrena zahvala kongresniku Blatniku za njegovo krasno poslanico dobrodošlice in njegov osebni poziv o-
drali Brezmadežnega Spočetja. Meni se je zdelo, da hodimo po nebesih, ko so nas vodili po kapelah v cerkvi, ki so ena lepša od druge. Ponosne bodimo, ker je bilo na konvenciji sklenjeno, da bomo imeli tudi Slovenci kapelo. Kakor je omenil prijatelj, a-ko bi vsak Slovenec v Ameriki prispeval en majhen dar pa bi bil denar kmalu zbran. Ko se bo zbiranje pričelo, takrat stopimo vsi na plan, ker za nas Slovence in posebno za naše potomce bo to dragocen spomin!
Izleti po prestolici so bili zelo dobro urejeni za nas. Hvaležne bomo za vselej ostale Corinne Leskovar in Irene Planinšek, ki sta se potrudili, da smo veliko videli, in, da je šlo vse po lepem redu in se ni nobena zgubila. Občudovale smo Corinne, ki je rojena v Ameriki in zna tako lepo slovensko govoriti in peti in to še bolj lepo kot znamo me, ki smo prišle iz starega kraja. Meni je bilo posebno dopadljivo, ker zna tako po ribniško govorit, kot bi bila v Ribnici rojena.
Čas je vse prehitro potekel. Rada bi se bila poslovila od vseh delegatk
biska poslanske zbornice danes jutro. Prepričana sem, da ne bomo nikoli pozabile občutka v naših srcu, ko smo bile pozdravljene od njega prav na prostorih zbornice Zveznih poslancev.
Vsaka delegatinja bo dodeljena enemu izmed odborov konvencije in pričakuje se, da bo dobro vršila svoje dolžnosti. Pri vseh vaših sklepih in odločitvah imejte vedno pred očmi dobrobit Zveze in članstva. Moramo ohraniti kar je dobro in spremeniti, kar boste smatrale, da bo izboljšalo organizacijo.
Odbori se bodo sestali po sedanjem zborovanju in če ne boste opravile dela, pa zopet v petek zjutraj.
Želim vam dobro razpoloženje in upam, da boste v tem kratkem času videle mnogo zanimivosti Washingtona.

POROČILO GLAVNE PODPREDSEDNICE
Gospa predsednica, č. g. p. Okorn, Ustanoviteljica M. Prisland, glavne odbornice, delegatinje in gostje: Najtoplejše pozdrave vsakemu izmed vas!
Kot podpredsednica Zveze, želim poročati o delu od julija 1964 do te konvencije. L. '1966 sem se udeležila državne konvencije pri podr. št. 43 v Milwaukee, v augustu 1965 sem bila na minnesotski državni konvenciji v Aurori. Žal se zaradi bolezni nisem mogla udeležiti 40 letnica podr. v Sheboyganu, toda naša podružnica je bila dobro zastopana. Te konvencije so izrednega pomena, ker se zberemo iz raznih krajev in se članstvo more bolje spoznati med seboj, izmenjati misli in predloge in tako poživljajo Zvezino delo po vsej Ameriki. Državne predsednice opravljajo važno delo.
Naša podr. št. 17 je bila zelo počaščena, da smo imele zmagovalko za Zvezino šolnino leto 1966. Vzelo je SŽZ, ki je bila prva organizacija izmed vseh slovenskih organizacij, ki je ustanovila šolninski sklad. To je velik uspeh, ki je omogočen zaradi prostovoljnih prispevkov, kar pomaga, nadarjenim mladim ljudem, da nadaljujejo svoje študije v njihovi stroki.
Zveza je med prvimi v raznih aktivnosti, kakor sport, potovanja in drugem delovanju; posebno kegljanje privede skupaj mnogo naših članic vsako leto na tekmovanjih. Važno je, da se tudi mladina pritegne, saj oni so voditelji bodočnosti.
in odbornic pa ni bilo mogoče, ker železni ptič ni čakal na nas in smo morale biti ob času na letališču. Prisrčno pozdravljam vse skupaj!

pišem te vrstice se nahajam v Do lenjskih Toplicah pri gdč. Anici Sitar, ki ima prostor za goste. Vsak dan grem v zdravilišče za kopel in obsevanje. Po predpisih je doba za zdravljenje 21 dni. Upam, da se bom boljše počutila, ko se vrnem in bom artritis pustila v toplicah. Danes je 24. julija in zunaj vihra silna nevihta, dež lije kot iz škal’a in toča je debela kot jajca. Gospod župnik nam je prinesel v posodi točo, ki zgleda kot ledene kocke in bomo rabili za pijačo. Glavna pijača tukaj je malinovec. To je bilo prvič v življenju, da sem pila hladno pijačo iz toče. Podnevi je tukaj precej vroče, ampak ponoči je prijetno hladno.
Udeležila sem se pet-dnevnega izleta po Sloveniji. Obiskali smo vse lepe kraje po Gorenjski, Štajerski,
Dolenjski in tudi po Hrvatski. O tem zanimivem izletu bom poročala, ko se vrnem.
Omeniti želim, da je bil sprejem ob našem prihodu na Brnik zelo prisrčen. Mene so prišli čakat sorodniki, sestrična Ivana Marin in hčerke ter Victor in Fani Kobilca, ki so mi izročili krasne šopke nageljev. Pozdravili so nas tudi odborniki od Izseljenske Matice. Za veselo razpoloženje so pa poskrbeli harmonikar in par plesalcev v narodnih nošah oblečeni.
Članice ste vljudno vabljene na sejo 19. septembra, razmotrivale BOMO O PRIREDITVI V OKTOBRU.
Imele bomo skupno dobro večerjo. Piknik, kakor smo imele običajno je za letos odpadel, ker je več članic pri slabem zdravju. Na večerjo bodo lahko prišli tudi možje in prijatelji, ki bodo nekaj plačali k stroškom. Za članico bo plačano iz ročne blagajne.
Iskrene pozdrave vsem odbornicam in članicam posebno pri št. 84 ter bralcem Zarje!

Kampanje so bile uspešne, toda ne smemo se ustaviti, ampak se vedno potruditi, da pridobimo nove članice.
Kako lep poklon ustanoviteljici, Marie Prisland s pridobitvijo novega članstva. Čestitke vsem pridnim delavkam in zmagovalkam v tekmovanju za nove članice.
Čestitke podr. št. 103, ki so organizirale podr. v našem slavnem mestu. In SŽZ more biti ponosna, da je bila prva slovenska organizacija, ki je imela svojo konvencijo v naši prestolici.
Vedno sem bila ponosna, da morem sodelovati s tako odličnimi voditeljicami Zveze, ki je vedno tesno pri srcu.
Mnogo uspeha konvenciji in naj Bog blagoslovi vse.

POROČILO TAJNICE FINANČNEGA ODBORA IN PREDSEDNICE ŠOLNINSKEGA ODBORA
Častiti g. duhovni svetovalec, glavne odbornice in delegatke 14. narodne konvencije Slovenske Ženske Zveze.
Zelo sem srečna in vesela, da mi zdravje dopušča biti med vami. Srčno želim, da bi imele lepo zborovanje, ter da bi z obiskom v ameriški metropoli bile povsem zadovoljne.
Najlepša zahvala lokalni podružnici, predvsem njeni predsednici in ustanoviteljici Irene Planinšek in odboru, za lepo pripravljen program in prisrčen sprejem.
Od zadnje konvencije je k Zvezi pristopilo okrog tisoč novih članic, ki bodo krepile naše vrste in nadaljevale delo naših pionirk. Iskreno dobrodošle! In iskreno dobrodošla naša nova podružnica v tem mestu!
Hvaležne smo odbornicam, članicam in prijateljem, ki so prispevali v naš šolninski sklad. Posebna nabirka znaša $1,600.00, kar je že lepa vsota. Naj omenim našo požrtvovalno gl. odbornico sestro Ano Pachak iz Pueblo, ki je temu skladu naklonila že nad $400.00, zakar ji najlepša zahvala.
Rada sem se udeležila državnih konvencij v Wisconsinu in Illinoisu ter lepega in prijetnega programa skupnih podružnic države Ohio. Vsaka taka prireditev zbliža članstvo, pritegne nove prijatelje, dela Zvezi reklamo in prispeva k njenemu ugledu. Prepričana sem, da bi svet bil veliko bolj dolgočasen in pust, če bi ne bilo naše Zveze in njenih lepih, zabavnih prireditev.
Za Zvezin arhiv sem pripravila precej zgodovinskega gradiva, tikajočega se Zveze in drugih dogodkov iz prvih let naseljevanja Slovencev v Ameriko. Gradivo bo na razpolago bodočim zgodovinarjem. V Ljubljano sem ta-mošnji univerzi in njenemu zgodovinskemu centru poslala precej materijala namenjenega za nameravano knjigo o zgodovnii Slovencev v svetu.
Veselijo me prijazne pripombe članic in prijateljev, ki berejo kolono OH, TA SVET. Mnogo lažje in z večjim veseljem pišemo, če vemo, da ustrežemo.
Preden podam finančno poročilo naj omenim uradnike zavarovalninskega oddelka države Illinois, ki pridejo v glavni urad vsaka tri leta v svrho pregleda našega poslovanja. Ti gospodje, preizkušeni v svojem poklicu, so Zvezi v veliko korist, članstvu pa v zadovoljstvo, ker nam dajejo garancijo, da je Zvezino poslovanje odlično in v
skladu s pravili. Pregledani so vsi dohodki in stroški ter vse investicije če so varno naložene. Pazno prečitajo vse Zapisnike zborovanja glavnega odbora in konvencije. Večkrat dajo kak dober nasvet, zakar smo jim hvaležne.
Investicije
Posameznih vlog ne bom navajala, ker ima vsaka izmed vas pred seboj tiskano poročilo vseh vlog, omenila bom le skupno premoženje in druge podatke v zvezi z uradom finančne tajnice.
Od zadnje konvencije je poteklo več bondov knjižne vrednosti za $09,740.00, vnovčeni za $72,670.73. Dobiček znaša $2,936.73. Iz posojilnic se je premestilo $20,000.00 na višje obresti. Nove vloge so bile narejene v svoti $'123,256.00. Zvezino posestvo se je v vrednosti znižalo za $1,018.12.

POROČILO GLAVNE TAJNICE
Iskreno pozdravljam vse odbornice in delegatke zbrane na 14. redni konvenciji. Zdi se mi da, ni dolgo od tega, ko smo na 13. redni konvenciji, ki se je vršila v Chicagi, sklenile, da se vrši prihodnje zborovanje v Washingtonu, D. C. Želele smo draga drugi, srečo in zdravje dočakati mesec maj, 1967, kar se nam je takrat videla precej dolga doba. In tukaj smo! Gotovo smo za tri leta bolj preizkušene in imamo še bolj globoko razumevanje v družinskem življenju in pri Zvezi.
V	zadnijh treh letih se je mnogo spremenilo, namreč draginja je zadela slehernega izmed nas, toda poslovanje je pa ostalo neizpremenjeno. Tisti, ki delujemo že leta in leta za napredek in dobrobit organizacije in članstva ne razumemo, današnje mladine, ki se noče zanimati za društveno življenje, katero bo moralo enkrat prevzeti. Starejši se dobro zavedamo, da bo morala mladina prevzeti naše dolžnosti in obligacije. Ko smo mi začeli je bilo treba posvetiti mnoge žrtve, , da smo zgradili kar danes s ponosom predstavljamo. Obdržati sedanji uspeh je pa delo za katerega moramo pripraviti svoje potomce. Me smo storile najboljše v svojih močeh in upati je, da bo doraščujoča mladina našla pot v vrste pridnih pionirk.
Kampanja “NOVE DOBE” v polnem teku!
Po nad vse uspešni, zgodovinski 14. redni konvenciji, ki se je vršila v Washington, D.C., se je pričela kampanja za nove članice, ki bo trajala do 31. oktobra, 1968. Večkrat smo dobili priporočila, da bi kampanja trajala malo	delj	časa,	ker pozimi je neudobno ven	hoditi, pomladi je preveč dela, poleti	je	prevroče	in	v	jeseni je
pa ravno	prav.	Tako imate zdaj dve jeseni,	da boste lahko šle do sorodnic, znank	in	prijateljic	ter	jih	na-
vdušile za pristop. Priporoča se, da bi začele kar doma in najprvo vpisale vse v svoji družini, da bo ste imele 100% Zvezino družino.
Nagrade so sledeče za delavke:
En dolar za novo članico v	razred B, ki šteje 1 točko;
Pol dolarja za novo članico	v razred A, ki bo všteta za /2 točke;
Štiri novi v mladinskem oddelku bodo šteti za eno točko in dolar nagrade.
Podružnice bodo tudi prejele ob zaključku denarne nagrade:
Prva nagrada — $25.00 v gotovini;
Druga nagrada — $15.00 v gotovini;
Tretja nagrada •— $10.00 v gotovini.
Najbolj pridna agitatorica bo pa prejela še posebno odlikovanja, ki je za ta čas presenečenje!
Želimo, da bi mladini Bog delil mnogo blagoslovov, kakor je nam!
V zadnjih treh letih, namreč do 31. decembra, 1966, znese napredek v splošni blagajni $30,579.91. Skupno premoženje Zveze do 31. dec, 1966 je $521,460.20. Torej imamo nad pol-milijona vrednost v premoženju. Dohodki v treh letih so bili $234,308.23 in izplačanih je bilo $203,-728.32. Letni promet je okrog $80,000.00. Za smrtne slučaje je bilo izplačano $59,150.00. Bilo je 560 smrtnih slučajev.
Naša Zveza je edina organizacija, ki pokloni svojim živim članicam nekaj lepega vsak mesec in to je naše glasilo Zarja, ki pride v domove članic kot zaželjen gost.
V	treh letih nas je Zarja stala $54,377.18. Vsak dolar, ki je porabljen za naše priljubljeno glasilo je ena najboljših investicij, ker Zarja je mesec za mesecem za nas kot spominska knjiga. Mnogokrat se sliši poklon, da Zarjo članice hranino na leta in leta. Naše odbornice in članice pridno poročajo zanimive vesti in urednica je zelo zmožna in vestna ter lepo razdeli gradivo, da je v ponos vsemu članstvu.
Kampanje za nove članice vedno zbudijo lepo zanimanje med podružnicami, ki tekmujejo, katera bo na prvem mestu ob zaključku. Od zadnje konvencije so se vršile tri velike kampanje v katerih je bilo vpisanih skoraj tisoč novih članic. Po vsaki kampanji, ste gotovo z zanimanjem brale, katere članice so bile najbolj aktivne in pri katerih podružnicah je bil največji napredek. Največ novih članic je bilo pridobljenih pri podružnici št. 50 v Clevelandu; dalje pri št. 33 v Duluth, Minnesota in v mladinskem oddelku pri podružnici št. 32 v Euclid, Ohio.
Mary Bostian, državna predsednica za Ohio, se odlikuje med najbolj pridnimi med mladino. Skupno z Mrs. Ann Cooke sta organizirali mladinski krožek, to so deklice od
6	let starosti, do približno 16 let ki nastopajo v slikovitih uniformah v paradah in so izvežbane v vrtenju palic, da jih je veselje opazovat. (V zadnji izdaji Zarje smo videle grupo na naslovni strani.) Upati je, da se bo zanimanje za Zvezo med mladino s temi nastopi povečalo.
Tajnice imajo največjo težavo pri kolekti asesmenta. Vedno dobivamo vprašanja, kaj naj storijo, da bi članice redno plačevale. Ako ima katera dober nasvet v tem oziru, jo bomo prav rade poslušale in vzele priporočilo v naznanje.
V glavnem uradu smo sestavili starostno listino vseh članic. Pronašle smo, da imamo na tisoč članic, ki so dopolnile starost 75 let, ki plačujejo samo 20 centov na mesec in to je za	stroškovni sklad.	Smrtninski	ases-
ment imajo prost. Popolnoma proste so pa le tiste članice, ki so dosegle starost 80 let do 1. julija, 1964. Odtlej naprej nam pa zavarovalninski oddelek države Illinois, ne dovoli nobenega popolnoma prostega asesmenta, ker zakon veleva, da mora vsak živ član plačevati za stroške, ki so za vzdrževanje glasila, katerega vsaka prejema in za tekoče izdatke. Ker	ste pri	nekaterih	podružnicah	nam
priporočale, da se da vsem članicam, ki dopolnejo starost 80 let popolnoma prost asesment, naj bo na tem mestu poročano, da to ne moremo uveljaviti, ker je proti zakonu, ki ima vse organizacije v oblasti. Razred "B” lepo napreduje, toda ob tem času nam še ni dovoljeno deliti bonuse, ker se članice tudi v tem razredu starajo in bo vedno več izplačil.	Ako bo	mogoče kaj urediti na	pri-
hodnji konvenciji, ste lahko brez skrbi, da se bo to storilo, ker vemo, da bi bilo mnogim po volji.
Lansko leto v mesecu avgustu so bili v našem uradu državni pregledovalci (State Insurance Department examiners). Ti gospodje pridejo enkrat v dobi treh do štirih let. Za nas je bilo to pot štiri leta od zadnjega pregleda. Poročilo,	ki smo	prejeli po	pregledu je	bilo
v vseh ozirih pohvalno za naše poslovanje.

Naše krajevne tajnice so po večini točne pri pošiljanju mesečnega poročila. Na žalost imamo tudi nekaj takih, ki rade zaostajajo, kar nam dela velikokrat posebno sitnost, ker moramo vsak mesec poslati točno poročilo vseh
dohodkov in stroškov v Springfield na državni zavarovalninski urad. Fočasne so vedno ene in iste, ki se ne poboljšajo tudi na opomine. Zelo nam bi bilo ustreženo, ako bi se pri vseh podružnicah pazilo na točnost. Po predpisih bi moralo biti mesečno poročilo v našem uradu do zadnjega dneva v mesecu in to ni vselej tako. Že več let imamo tudi konvenčno naročilo, da vsaka tajnica pošlje na naš urad letno poročilo naslovov svojih članic. Ako bi to vse storile, bi ne bilo toliko zamer od članic, da ne dobivajo Zarjo vsak mesec ali pa, da dobivajo na napačen naslov.
V glavnem uradu imamo sedaj zelo zmožno asistentko v osebi Sophie Bogolin (hčerka naše gl. blagajničarke Mrs. Železnikar.) Da bodo tajnice lažje izpolnile mesečno poročilo imamo po zaslugi naše asistentke novo 4. stran. Upati je, da se bodo tajnice kmalu privadile in nam poročale po novem sistemu, ki bo vsem tajnicam v pomoč pri sestavi članic po razredih in po vsoti asesmenta.
K zaključku tega poročila se želim najlepše zahvaliti vsem direktoricam, glavnim odbornicam, krajevnim odbornicam in članicam za sodelovanje v preteklosti in upam, da nam bo ljubi Bog dal v bodočnosti zdravje in veselje do delovanja v procvit in napredek Zveze. Letošnja konvencija je zame 13. Gotovo mi je vsaka konvencija pustila neizbrisne spomine. Upam, da bo 14. redna konvencija doprinesla mnogo lepega vsem, ki smo imele priložnost biti navzoče in tudi vsem, ki so z nami v duhu s toplimi željami za uspeh pri vseh sklepih. Iz dna srca želim, da bi naša nebeška Mati bila z nami vse dni zborovanja ter nas privedla srečno na svoje domove in k delu pri svojih podružnicah še za večjo SŽZ!

GLAVNA BLAGAJNIČARKA, Josephine Železnikar poda ustno poročilo, ker je njeno konvenčno poročilo bilo že priobčeno v Zarji.
POROČILO PREDSEDNICE NADZORNEGA ODBORA
Č. g. Father, glavne odbornice, moje drage prijateljice in sestre— pozdrav in najboljše želje vsem. Moje konvenčno poročilo je bilo v majski Zarji.
V zadoščenje mi je moje delovanje kot glavna nadzornica. Radevolje sem se udeleževala pol-Ietnih sej, ki so vedno dobro pripravljene ter zelo poučne. V teku devetih let odkar sem glavna odbornica, sem spoznala veliko sijajnih ljudi na raznih Zvezinih prireditvah. Vedno sem rada sodelovala pri delu za Zvezo in podružnico.
V vseh članskih kampanjah sem sodelovala in v zadnji sem zopet dosegla drugo mesto s pridobitvijo 18 odraslih članic ter 17 mladinskih.
S pomočjo minnesotske državne preds. Barbara Rosandich iz Ely, Ann Satovich, preds. podr. iz Hibbinga ter Frances Kosanovich, ki je načeljevala letalskim rezervacijam, smo uspele, da je na tej konvenciji navzočih 57 gostov iz Minnesote.
Naši minnesotski Zvezini dnevi postajajo večji in bolj zanimivi. Vsako leto je gostiteljica podr. iz drugega mesta. Naše podružnice si lepo vrstijo pokroviteljica Zve-zinega dneva.
Kot poročevalka naše podr. za Zarjo, sem redno poročala o mnogih aktivnostih iz našega predela.
Bilo je prijetno delovati skupno z ostalima nadzornicama Vicki Faletič in Frances Gaspich, ki so vedno prijazne in pripravljene pomagati. Zelo mi je žal, da Vicki ne more biti z nami na tej konvenciji zaradi bolezni. Zelo pogrešamo njeno energijo in mnogo dobrih idej. Bog ji nakloni čimprejšnje zdravje.
Ponosne smo lahko na gl. odbornice, ki trdo delajo za napredek organizacije in članstva. Upam, da bomo imele nepozabno konvenčno zborovanje.

POROČILO UREDNICE
Moje drage in spoštovane odbornice in delegatinje 14
konvencije!
Nahajamo se v krasnem mestu Washington, D. C., naša prestoiica in center demokracije. Prepričana sem, da čutite, kakor jaz, da je s tem mestom povezane mnogo zgodovine, kar pomeni vsakemu Amerikancu posebni občutek predanosti. Upam, da bo del veličine tega mesta se odseval tudi v naših konvenčnih razpravah in sklepih za večji uspeh Zveze.
Zadnje leto in pol, sem delala skupno z gl. odbornicami v glavnem uradu na pripravah za to konvencijo, da bi bila uspešna v vseh ozirih, posebno v konvenčnih zborovanjih, kakor tudi, da se izrabi vsaka minuta za ogled mesta. Preveč bi bilo iti v podrobnosti, toda vzelo je mnogo časa, načrtov, idej in priprav.
Upam, da se boste dobro počutile in poskušajte spregledati, če bodo kake neprijetnosti. Naj izrečem prisrčno zahvalo krajevnemu odboru za odlično sodelovanje.
Med važnimi razpravami bo tudi naš list ZARJA, glasilo SŽZ. V resnici jo glasilo, tribuna skupnega zbora nad 100 pisateljic, ki redno poročajo iz vseh delov Amerike o delu podružnic, kakor tudi o življenju raznih naselbin. Zarja more nositi del pohvale za uspeh Zveze in podr. ter je važno, da ta izredna sila nadaljuje svoje delo v še večji meri v bodočnosti.
Na tej konvenciji slavimo 40 letnico SŽZ, čeprav je organizacija že v 41 letu obstoja. Zarja se bliža tudi svoji 40 letnici. Še imam en izvod originalne knjižice “Ameriška Slovenita”, ki je krasni spomin na prvo izdajo lista leta 1928. V sedanji obliki je Zarja pričela s svojim izhajanjem leta 1929. Poklon velja dalekovidnosti ustanoviteljic, ki so pričele s slovensko žensko revijo v Ameriki.
Važnost našega lista se vidi v tem, da so mnoge podobne publikacije prenehale, kakor mi je omenil pred kratkim tiskarnar: "Kako to, da Zarja ne izgublja na svoji listi, kakor je to slučaj z mnogimi drugimi listi?”
Moj odgovor je bil enostaven, toda resničen: “Zato, ker smo pri Zvezi in Zarji ženske, ki ne damo rade iz rok kar nam je pri srcu, Iver smo rade v dobri družbi, — kar vse nam omogoča Zarja, ki je prijetna družabnica že sama po sebi.” Možakar mi je moral pritrditi.
Zelo rada silšim pripombe glede Zarje, kako radi jo čitajo. Naravno, velja zahvala vam vsem, ki ste nudili Zarji svoje talente in sposobnosti vseh zadnjih 39 let.
IZRAZ ZAHVALE
Kadar govorimo o Zarji, je menda prav, da se spomnimo tistih, ki so pričeli s tem delom in med prvimi, ki je podprla idejo o Zarji je naša Mrs. Marie Prisland, ki je še vedno pridna pisateljica kolone “Oh, ta svet”, ki je vedno zanimivo in razvedrilno berivo. Mrs. Albina Novak je gotovo še vedno najbolj vplivna bivša urednica, ki je še vedno voditeljica organizacije. Zadnja 2 termina smo i-mele energično predsednico, Mrs. Antonia Turek, katere dopisi izražajo navdušenje za Zvezo. Duhovni svetovalec, g. p. Okorn nam nudi lepo duhovno misel vsaki mesec.
Med odličnimi odbornicami naj omenim Mrs. Anna Pachak, Iti se vedno trudi, da dobi tudi finančno podporo listu in enako Mrs. Mary Lenich, ena izmed najboljših Zarjinih podpornic. Božične ter posebne izdaje bi ne bile ta prave, brez slavnostnih oglasov iz Puebla in Eveleth.
Več kot 10,000 čitateljev Zarje so enoglasni v mnenju, da je kolona “Pots, Pans and Pastime” med prvimi, ki se čita, lto pride list v hišo. To kolono je pričela Mrs. Marie Prisland in jo uspešno in sposobno nadaljuje njena hčerka Mrs. Hermine Dicke.
Naše mladinsko gibanje je zelo pridobilo z odlično pisateljico, ki je poznana pod imenom Regina, toda kadar je pohvala na mestu, moramo izreči zahvalo Mrs. Olgi Ancel, ki je sama mati in zna lepo in zanimivo pisati za mladino.
Seveda velja zahvala premnogim vam, ki ste tukaj v sobi zaradi vašega dolgoletnega zvestega dela pri Zarji
in upam, da boste nudile listu Vašo naklonjenost še premnoga leta v bodočnosti.
UPRAVA
Delo pri Zarji obsega upravništvo lista ter uredništvo. Zadnjih 15 let odkar sem urednica, je cena tisku znatno narasla. Smo srečni, da tiskarna v kateri tiskamo Zarjo, drži cene zmerne, kar nam omogoča, da moremo nadaljevati, kakor doslej. Tiskanje ZARJE stane povprečno $l,G35 vsaka izdaja, to je povprečje na podlagi G številk na leto na 16 straneh, a drugih 6 številk na 32 straneh. Benediktinska tiskarna, nam je dala preračunane stroške tiskanja za prihodnje leto, ki so skoro isti kot doslej.
Iz tiskovnega sklada se plačajo manjši izdatki, kakor so slike, klišeji in poštnina. Ti stroški so potrebni in se poravnajo iz vaših daril ter oglaševanja. Na splošno se stroški in dohodki izenačijo, toda včasih ne zadošča. V tem pogledu sem hvaležna za podporo, katero nam nudijo članice in podružnice.
OGLAŠEVANJE
Nikoli si nisem vzela časa, da bi štela vrstice, strani, ali, da bi seštela ure dela, toda morem vas zagotoviti, da je urejevanje Zarje veliko delo. Če se upošteva vse vrste operacij, predno je številka končana, potem se more videti, ltolilto dela je vloženega v to. Najprej mora urednica pretipkati in popraviti vse dopise, potem črkostavec postavi dopis in tiskarna ima za to samo enega človeka, ki je sposoben kopirati slovenščino in to je včasih zelo zamudno, ker ima tudi drugo delo, in se zgodi, da mora Zarjino gradivo čakati. Nato urednica zopet popravi kar je stavec natisnil in posebno v slovenščini je običajno mnogo napak, ker je stavec češkega rodu. Po ponovnem pregledu popravljenih napak, urednica pripravi strani, ki morajo natančno slediti ena drugi. Po zopetnem pregledu in popravilu napak, tiskarnar postavi skupno 8 strani in jih da v stroj za tisk. Kadar imamo 32 strani, se tiskajo štiri forme in še platnice posebej. Za vsako formo se uporabi cel dan tiskanja. Če seštejete dneve, boste ugotovile, da so že potekli trije tedni, toda še potem ko je list dotiskan, vzame 3 dni, da se natisnejo naslovi in odpošlje, nakar prevzame pošta, ki tiskani material počasi razpečava.
Gornje omenjam zaradi tega, da boste videle kako je važno, da se držite terminov, da imamo vaše dopise pravočasno. Včasih se res zgodi, da pride številka precej pozno v mesecu v vaše domove, toda pri mesečniku je to večkrat neizogibno in upam, da razumete.
NASLOVNIK
Naša lista naslovov se stalno spreminja. Ljudje se vedno selijo ter mnoga imena je treba brisati, a druga dodati. V tem oziru sem odvisna od tajnic, da me sproti obveščajo o spremembah. V tem letu smo po novi poštni uredbi, uredile pri vseh naslovih tako imenovani “zip code”.

NAČRTI ZA BODOČNOST
Ko se bo sestal odbor za Zarjo, upam, da se bo razvila živahna debata in da boste iznesle dobre predloge za izboljšanja. Želela bi, da bi se oglasile nove pisateljice, ki bi pisale, bodisi v angleškem, ali pa v slovenskem jeziku in pisale zanimive stvari iz ameriške in slovenske zgodovine, književnosti, zanimanj itd.
Tudi predlagam, da Zarja ohrani sedanja revijalno obliko, ki se je tako priljubila med našimi članicami.
Žal imamo manj slovenskih dopisovalk, čeprav bi zelo želela, da se slovenski del Zarje ohrani in morda celo poveča. Pozivam vse, ki znajo slovenščino, da jo uporabijo v svojih dopisih, saj je naš jezik naš zaklad in ponos.
Ob zaključku se želim iskreno zahvaliti za vaše zaupanje in posebno za vašo ljubezen do ZARJE in za odlično sodelovanje pri njenemu napredku, kar pomeni uspeh Zveze.	Corinne	Leskovar

Continuation of the Story of THE UGLY MADONNA

The feast of the Assumption was drawing near, and one day Don Ca-millo summoned those who would carry the statue in the procession.
"This year the route followed by the procession will be longer than usual,” he told them, “because we must go as far as the newly built houses along the south road.”
It was a steaming hot August, and the idea of walking an extra mile over a freshly graveled road was enough to make even a strong man flinch.
“We might carry the statue in two shifts,” suggested old Giarola, who was in charge of arrangements.
“That’s dangerous,” said Don Ca-millo. “The sun beats down and the bearers’ hands get sweaty and may slip just at the moment of changing. No, I think we might rig up Rebecci’s small truck. As a matter of fact, that would add to the dignity of the whole thing, and I don’t see any real objections.”
In a way the bearers were half sorry, but when the thought of the length of the route and the heat of the sun, they felt relieved and gave their assent. Rebecci was glad to lend his truck, and the next day he brought it to the shed back of the rectory. Don Camillo insisted on decorating it in person, and for a whole week he worked so hard that all over the village they could hear the sound of his hammer. He had built a platform on the back of the truck and then covered it with draperies and flowers, producing a truly magnificent effect. When Sunday came, the "ugly Madonna” was brought out of the church and hoisted up on to the platform. The pedestal was tied down with strong ropes, and these were covered with garlands of flowers.
"You don’t have to worry about the driving,” Don Camillo said to Rebecci. "Even if you got fifty miles an hour, I guarantee that it will hold fast.”
“With all those decorations the Madonna is very nearly beautiful,” people said when the truck started.
The procession began to wind its way toward the south road, with the truck moving at the speed of a man’s walk. The freshly laid gravel was bumpy and the clutch suddenly got something wrong with it, which jolted the truck so1 hard that if Don Camillo hadn’t tied the pedestal securely to the platform, the "ugly Madonna” would have been out of luck.

was wrong and knew that Rebecci must be worried about it, so when they reached the south road he decided to change the route.
“The truck can’t go so slowly over the gravel,” he said, “so we’ll cut across the fields to the highway. Rebecci will drive back at normal speed and wait for us at the bridge. There we’ll re-form the procession and march on a smooth surface all the way back to the center of the village.”
Rebecci went dutifully back, and the “ugly Madonna” made the most uncomfortable trip of her life. The procession re-formed at the bridge and moved smoothly along the paved road, although occasionally Rebecci’s clutch caused the truck to leap forward as if someone had given a kick from behind. The village was all decked out, especially the main street, with the arcades on either side, where every house was covered with streamers and people threw handfuls of flowers out the windows.
Unfortunately this street was paved with cobblestones, and because the truck had hard tires as well as a broken clutch, it bounced up and down as if it had St. Vitus’ dance. Rut the “ugly Madonna” seemed to be glued to the platform, through Don Camillo’s particular merit. Halfway down the main street, however, there was an especially rough bit of pav-nig, punctuated by holes left from the construction of a sewer running below it.
“Once they’re over that,” there’s no more danger,” people said. Although they had complete faith in Don Ca-millo, they left a considerable space between themselves and the bouncing truck.
But the “ugly Madonna” did not get through the danger zone. She did not fall, because Don Camillo’s ropes held her fast, but on a particuarly rough bump she just crumbled into pieces. The statue was not made out of terra cotta after all; it was some infernal mixture of brick dust or plaster or who knows what, and after two or three thousand death-dealing blows such as it had just received an inevitable fate overtook it. nut the shout which rose from the bystanders was not. occasioned by the crumbling of the "ugly Madonna.” II was a salute to the “fair Madonna,” which as if by a miracle took its place.
On the pedestal, which was still roped securely to the truck, there emerged, like a butterfly coming out of its cocoon, a somewhat small statue of solid silver. Don Camillo stared at it in astonishment, and into his mind came Christ’s words: “True beauty does not reside in the face . . . True beauty cannot bo

No one was a happier person during the recent National Convention than Ray Marolt, son of pres, of Br. 17, Marion Marolt and grandson of Supreme Vice-Pres., Marie Floryan.
He was given the task of serving Mass each morning for Father Claude. This was a wonderful experience for both Ray and those who watched him perform his duties at the altar. Hope that God will give him that extra blessing that He reserves for only the best!

Don Camillo was telling the most shameless lie of his life. But he could not, in the face of his assembled parish, explain that he had chosen a round-about and rocky route for the procession, blown up the truck tires to the bursting-point, sabotaged the clutch and even abetted the destructive power of holes and gravel by driving a pointed tool into the terra cotta and starting to crack it open, which last effort he had a-bandoned when he had seen that the material of which the ugly statue was made would crumble of its own accord. He meant to confess it to Christ, Who of course already knew about it. Meanwhile he went 011 with his preoration.

Peppone, who was standing in the front row, in order to “observe the phenomenon more closely,” turned to liis lieutenant Smilzo: “What does he mean by the ‘new barbarians’?” he asked him.
Smilzo shrugged his shoulders. "Just a hit of unbridled clerical imagination.”
There was a moment of silence and the procession continued.
