EUCLID VET FOR 2003” to 40-year member Paul J. Hribar. Mr. Hribar has served the Veteran’s group as its Treasurer, Board of Trustees Member, Golf Chairman, and as its Attorney from time to time over the years. He has also written profiles of his fellow members for the group’s newsletter and was granted a Life Membership in 1993. After five months of training at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, Hribar was commissioned as an Ensign in the USCGR in June, 1942. He served as commanding officer of two sub chasers in the Gulf of Mexico where German U-boats had sunk 14 vessels. Mr. Hribar attended the U.S. Navy’s Anti-Submarine Warfare Schools in Key West, Florida, and then served as a Navigating and Gunnery Officer aboard a G.S. Coast Guard cutter escorting and protecting North Atlantic ship convoys against German U-boat attacks until the time the U-boat fleet was virtually destroyed. At that time, 2,500 Coast Guard men and officers, including Hribar, Paul J. Hribar were transferred from Navy/Coast Guard duty to take over and operate a fleet of new U.S. Army transport vessels designed for duty in the Pacific Theater. Hribar, by then a Senior Grade Lieutenant, was appointed Commanding Officer of FS-262, assembled a crew and took his ship from New York City through the Panama Canal, up to the Los Angeles area and to Pearl Harbor where he was appointed Convoy Commodore of a group of the new Army Transports, which he guided to Finchhaven and then Hollandia, New Guinea with stops at Funa Futi and New-mea, New Caledonia, along the way. The balance of Hribar’s 42 months of sea duty was spent in operations throughout the Philippine Islands and in preparation for the then planned invasion of Japan. When the atomic bombs ended the war, Hribar returned to Cleveland in late December, 1945 and went on inactive duty after his terminal leave time ran out in early March, 1946. He replaces Anton Gogala. The letter, dated December 25, 2003,announcing the appointment was received by the American Home from Slovenia’s Foreign Minister, Dimitrij Rupel. It indicated that his jurisdiction covers the states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Colorado. It outlined his duties as including “fostering universal mutual cooperation between Slovenia and the United States, and in particular those areas where there exists interest in both countries by its citizens, business, culture, and other organizations and foundations in accordance with international law.” [If this translation is inaccurate in any respect, the writer welcomes a clarification.] Furthermore, the article mentions that the address, telephone number and fax number have not changed. Chances in personnel often provide opportunity for other changes in relationships that can bring parties closer together, drive parties further apart, or leave parties staring at each other in a stand-off. Hopefully, the appointment of Marcel Koprol as Consul is that of a person of good character, a trained diplomat who will work hard at creating relationships and building bridges. During the communist era, the Consul was not welcome in the refugee community that had fled communism in as much as the Consul was an agent of a repressive Yugoslav government. When one visited the consulate in its downtown office, it was an eerie experience, like stepping out of freedom and into prison. When one left the consulate, it was a relief to ceived to be haunted because someone says it is not? The incoming Consul, however, has an opportunity to break that perception without great cost. He can move the consulate from its present downtown skyscraper address to the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio. Moving the consulate to the Slovenian National Home would have multiple mutual benefits for Slovenia and its constituents in the United States, and it would be in-line with the duties set forth by Foreign Minister Rupel. Location and access. The Slovenian National Home is conveniently located near Interstate 90 and the Inner Belt, and it is only 2 miles from downtown Cleveland. According to Councilman Joe Cimperman, millions of dollars have been invested in the St. Clair neighborhood recently. Nevertheless, the cost of rent is far less than the rent in downtown skyscrapers. The extra cost of being located downtown -parking, restaurant prices, traffic jams - should also be considered. When Slovenia was part of the repressive Yugoslavia, that government, in its paranoia, was concerned about security. Thus it was prudent to create barriers and diminish accessibility by maintaining its consulate in a downtown skyscraper. Slovenia is now a democracy. Such barriers are no longer necessary. Moreover, democracies strive to remove barriers to voting and other governmental services; would it not be easier to travel to the Slovenian National Home to vote or certify a legal document than to travel to an unfamiliar downtown skyscraper? Consulates of other European nations are not located in downtown Cleveland’s skyscrapers. Rather, they are scattered around Cleveland and in the suburbs near their ethnic constituents. For example, the Croatian consulate is located in the Croatian Cleveland by paying rent for office space for its consulate in the Slovenian National Home. Additional rental income is always welcome to defray the cost of maintaining a historic landmark, and it helps to insure its survival. If the Slovenian National Home survives, then there is a greater chance of our cultural institutions surviving. If there was no Slovenian National Home, where would AMLA hold its annual Children’s Christmas party? Where would Fantje Na Vasi, Glasbena Matica, Korotan, and Kres perform? Where would Slovenska Pristava have its annual dinner-dance, and where would young couples have their “Big, Fat, Slovenian Weddings?” The Republic of Slovenia has declared its desire to build ties to its emigrant communities. Establishing its consulate in the Slovenian National Home is a small but significant step on that long road. --Anton M. Polka Mass by RUDY FLIS I missed the “Polka Priest” Father George Balasko this year at our Polka Mass at Corpus Christi Parish on the West Side of Cleveland. His thoughts and insights of our heritage and our Catholic faith entwined in our celebration of Mass, with the music that dances in our blood since our birth, the polka and. the waltz, are great homilies. The Ray Polantz Orchestra eased us through Mass and then drove us through the rest of the evening with his crisp sound and fine selections of the music I love most. We’ll have the same band for our next Polka Miss. We had' a visiting priest celebrate our Polka Mass, his first. As the church emptied after Mass, the priest was all smiles, and when asked how he liked the Polka Mass, he answered, “We’ll have to do Synonymous with our heritage at large gatherings is good old fashioned cooking, and that is what we had for supper after our Polka Mass. I ate every morsel off my plate and then sat back in complete contentment, as my stomach, my ears, my heart and my soul enjoyed the total peace that was my world that night, in the company of my wife, Therese, and friends. Sorry you missed it. But, you can try again on June 23rd, a Wednesday evening, at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine at 6 p.m. Father George Balasko will celebrate this Polka Mass. Plan to attend. OH 44119 Insurance a good fit for Telich Editor, Following three years of Naval Air Corps Service with NATS (Naval Air Transport Service), I enrolled in Western Reserve University (September, 1946), and my career plans included following Dad (Mike Telich) into the insurance profession. Marrying Jan in June of 1947, I had three years to complete my education, but we compressed the three to two years. I was most grateful that Jan was able to work and supplement my Government Subsidy for Vets of $105 per month with her $200 monthly earnings, so we were able to meet our rent of $35 per month. Our ice box was replaced with a 8 cubic ft. G.E. refrigerator on our 1st anniversary. After I graduated from Western Reserve, I signed my contract with Sun Life of Canada. My contract provided me with a salary of $100 per month and a reduced commission schedule and heaps of paperwork and reports. I was able to produce at a good enough level so as to ask that my salary be cut and become a full-time commission person, with lower levels of paperwork and reports. Knowing that nothing happens until a person begins to save, we trained with the visual “You’ll earn a Fortune.” With a missionary zeal we called on colleagues, friends, businesses and athletic contacts with whom we had competed in football and track at Western Reserve. I took my mission seriously and started my own program, which has grown over these years to exceed 7 figures. In retrospect, the feeling that one receives when he has provided for those who survive is not measurable, but this feeling is priceless. At times our industry stresses measurement, how much and how large, but the true satisfaction of an adequate program cannot be measured because it is the feeling one is blessed with when he has provided adequately for those he loves. The cash values in my program have allowed us to help in the education of our five children, help to fund investments, protect mortgages, back up funding for aged relatives’ needs, and finance travel. The funds stood ready to serve our needs and here again our feeling was enhanced. I, too, was able to use these values and serve as my own banker. --John R. Life in the Refugee Comps 1948 by Anton Žakelj, translated and edited by John Žakelj Tuesday, April 13, 1948 1 signed up 8 women to make bobbin lace, but 1 don’t know whether we will have any customers. I learned that 1 can get some ration cards for milk in the nearby village of Gai. Milk is good for Cilka’s pregnancy, and it helps soothe my ulcers. Friday, April 16, 1948 Although I obtained ration cards for milk two days ago, 1 was not able to find an open store that would take them until today. Finally, I got 2 liters. We had our first meeting of craftspeople in this camp, but couldn’t agree on anything except to meet again next Monday. The camp administrator in charge of refugee labor assignments i;s a British ser-geant, a fat man named McKeon. He called a meeting of the refugee men today and assigned 10 of us (including myself) to pound fence-post^ along the camp’s roads. We didn’t work very long. The men from our village who applied to emigrate to Canada received word from the immigration commission that they were approved, ex-cept Franc Demšar and Pavle Kokelj. Both of them appealed and Franc received approval, but Pavle did not. They said Pavle was turned down because he has a wife and child, and because he tried to bribe the commission. He was the one who most wanted to go to Canada and was willing to pay anything. Saturday, April 17,1948 Karl Erznožnik applied to So to Chile. Cilka and I are worried we may be the only ones left. The fat man says most of the refugees will leave in 3 months, and the rest will be moved to Germany. Cilka finished sewing a pair of shoes for the nearby shoemaker Copi. He said, “This woman sews beautifully! She will be like gold for a master shoemaker!” But he doesn’t want myself since I don’t like sewing. He said he would gdt us some milk, but he hasn’t yet.«' Sunday, April 18, 1948 Last night we moved our clocks one hour ahead. Rev. Malavašič has arranged the camp chapel to be as much as possible like the chapel we had in the previous camp. It looks good, but I can’t stand the-dold cement floor. Ij/mi ‘it!:. Cilka and 1 wdht 'tb shoemaker Copi again. He was working (on a Sunday1?). This time he gave us some milk. He said he will have work for Cilka from time to time, so she can earn a little extra income. Then Cilka and I went for a walk in the woods and picked some dandelion leaves. Monday, April 19, 1948 All day 1 pounded fence posts with Levičar. McKeon said I could continue this type of work for the camp, but the pay would be very low, barely enough to buy a few loaves of bread each month. I said f will see how the crafts work goes. If that doesn’t work out, I will try to get a job in the woods with a logging crew. Tuesday, April 20, 1948 Pavle Kokelj took a train to Gradec (Graz) because someone there promised to help him get to Canada, but it didn’t do any good. Our roommates have become friendlier. Wednesday, April 21, 1948 This morning 1 walked into town to get some milk, and then I worked with the women in the gardens all day. I received an invitation to apply for Canadian immigration, but I don’t think they will accept me once they learn that Cilka is pregnant and I have ulcers and other health problems. I was also invited to a doctor’s exam to see if I qualify for a ration of white bread. Many of our refugees now have jobs with the railroad in the city of Leoben, or in the nearby woods. Thursday, April 22, 1948 I’ve been feeling sick -headaches, no energy, can’t sleep. I waited two hours to see a doctor. He said I will need to go to the hospital in Leoben for an X-ray. Friday, April 23, 1948 Four other people were taken to Leoben for x-rays. They told me I will have to wait. Cilka and I met with a Canadian immigration commission. They asked if we know how to work on a farm. “No.” Do we speak English? “A little.” Sometimes they spoke so quietly I couldn’t hear them. Finally, they said, “Maybe in the future we’ll need such workers.” We hear rumors that 4,500 Slovenians will be emigrating to Argentina. Well, on with the jokes and here is hoping they make you feel better. It seems that two elderly women were eating breakfast in a restaurant one morning. Ethel noticed something funny about Mabel’s ear and said, “Mabel, did you know that you have a suppository in your left ear?” Mable pulled it out of her ear and stared at it and then she said, “Ethel, I’m glad you saw that thing; now I know where my hearing aid is.” What the heck, it is still early in the column, let’s try one more. When the husband died, his wife put in the usual death notice in the paper and added that he died of Gonorrhea. No sooner were the papers delivered when a friend of the family phoned and complained bitterly. “You know very well he died of Diarrhea, not Gonorrhea.” The widow replied, “I nursed him night and day so of course I know he died of diarrhea, but I thought it would he would be better off for posterity to remember him as a good lover, rather than the big pooper that he always was.” Well, time to get back to memories and as I look back in my late 20s in 1957,1 was certainly going through the college of hard knocks and lessons 1 had to learn all on my own. As I think back to 1958 after dad suffered his first stroke, he was on so-called Sick Leave for awhile and although dad carried a good hospitalization coverage, it was tough sledding financially. From 1958 on, I paid the entire amount of the mortgage bills as well as taxes and home insurance, and was wise in that whenever I made these monthly payments to the bank, I did so by way of my own personal checking account. I thought I had it made when I went to file my income tax for 1958, figuring I could deduct the interest payments on the home that 1 was paying, but 1 learned the hard way that even though 1 was paying the bills, I could not claim them on my own Income Tax return. Needless to say, I had a few choice names to call the “IRS.” However, the ac- countant suggested that in view of the circumstances, the house be put in my name so that in future years I could deduct the interest that I paid. 1 told dad about this and he, too, agreed that in view of the circumstances, perhaps it would be wise to have the deed-mortgage changed over to my name. I made it clear to dad that even though I would be doing that, I still felt the house was really mom and dad’s. After we had the name changed I talked to the bank and said that 1 felt it was not right that they include in the monthly payments an amount that would be used to pay Property Taxes and House Insurance for I felt whatever I was paying should be applied entirely to the house. At first they insisted that was the way things were done because they wanted to insure there would be money on hand in the bank to cover Property Taxes and House Insurance. I urged them to reconsider and told them I would set up a separate savings account in which I would deposit funds into it on a monthly basis to insure there would be enough to meet the tax payment and insurance payment when due. I told them that I did not believe they were taking my money from the house payments and putting the money for tax and insurance in a separate drawer just for them to pay when those bills came due, but instead were using those funds for loans or whatever, and making money on my payments. They said they would bring it up at the next board meeting and see what could be done. Fortunately, they decided in my favor and what I was paying in mortgage payments were used strictly for the mortgage and interest only. That certainly helped for in the long run, I was able to free ourselves of the entire mortgage in seven years rather than 20, saving a lot of interest money. About the same time dad received a letter from the railroad Credit Union, saying that he had not made any payments on the $600 loan and wanted to know what his intentions were. I asked dad about that and said, “What are they talking about - a $600 loan?” He said, well when you and I decided to go ahead with the recreation room, both myself and dad agreed to share the entire bill which was some $ 1,200 with me paying $600 and dad the remaining $600. Little did I know that Dad did not have any sort of savings account but went to the New York Central Credit Union and borrowed the $600. At first dad said, “Don’t worry, they can’t touch my disability pension to pay off that loan.” Maybe so I said, but it is not right. The money was borrowed and it will have to be paid back, for if it is ignored, no doubt, they could put a lean against the house. I guess dad felt he had enough to worry about dealing with the stroke. However, I wrote to the Credit Union and explained what happened to dad and told them that I would mail them a check of $20 each month, more if I ever possibly could, until the debt was paid off. The Credit Union sent me a letter acknowledging my efforts and said they would be pleased with that setup. It goes without saying that it was tough sledding for quite a while, and had thought about getting a part time job to help the situation, but that would not have worked out for with looking after dad physically, working with him and his therapy, I could not take on a second part-time job. With faith in God, the bills were met and we were keeping our heads above water. During that time dad felt 1 should try to get him his birth certificate for full pension benefit applications. That was an ordeal in itself for I had to write letters to Yugoslavia, through the Consulate. After a few months, surprising to say, his original birth certificate came. But dad felt the bureau in Yugoslavia that sent it, did not have it right. All these years dad had been celebrating his birthday on February 12 for he always felt that he and Abe Lincoln were celebrating their birthday on the same date. But the certificate from Yugoslavia indicated dad was bom on Feb. 26. We used his birth certificate with the railroad, but dad said that regardless what the records show, he was still going to continue celebrating his birthday on Feb. 12. Don’t look now, but I think I’ll move some snow around. Lord, are you listening? I have a few cubic feet I can put your way for I feel that we should share it. Maybe give some to the state of Florida for the Everglades. In closing may the Good Lord bless and watch over all of you with good health and few burdens. Voinovich Praises President’s Funding for Lakes Clean-up WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) applauded President George W. Bush’s plan to dramatically expand efforts to clean up contaminated sediments in the Great Lakes, including the Maumee, Cuyahoga, Black, and Ashtabula rivers which feed into Lake Erie. The President’s request for $45 million for sediment clean up - an increase from this year’s $10 million in funding - was part of his 2005 budget proposal released last week. ‘We’ve made great prog-ress >n improving the water quality of the lakes and I know because I fish in Lake Erie regularly. Contaminated sediments are the unseen legacy of years of neglect and we’ve got to clean them UP if we really want to move ahead to improve the lakes’ water quality. I was proud to help enact the sediment clean UP Program and I’m glad to see the president’s strong suPport for it.” Voinovich is a member of ^ e Senate Environment and ublic Works Committee which oversees the management of the Great Lakes and was a co-sponsor of legisla-t'on creating the sediment clean up program. Senator Voinovich has lived on the coast of Lake Erie in Cleveland, Ohio for most of his life. Nearly 40 years ago, when he was elected to the state legislature with Lake Erie forming the northern border of his district, he saw firsthand the effects of pollution on the lake and began waging what he refers to as the “Second Battle of Lake Erie” - to reclaim and restore Ohio’s Great Lake. Basin Protection As a state legislator in the late 1960s, Senator Voinovich formed a four-state legislature committee that stopped those states from going forward with exploratory drilling in the bed of Lake Erie. He also helped stop the Energy Department from considering using.the salt mines under Lake Erie as a storage area for nuclear waste when he was a Cuyahoga County Commissioner. Continuing on these efforts, Senator Voinovich included an amendment in the fiscal year 2003 Omnibus Appropriations Bill to extend the current moratorium on oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes for two years until the end of 2005. He fielded numerous questions about various controversial sports figures, and enjoyed bantering with many old pals. We'll have to put him on our waiting list, he's our kind of guy. After Pledge of Allegiance, we had a quiet moment to remember dear friends and members who passed away recently: Mary Batic; Bob Jevnikar (son of Mary Jevnikar); Sam Knezevic (brother of Pete Knezevic), Mary Kotar (sister of Ed Kotar), Ann Parker; and Betty Skedel (sister of Marie Kotar). May they rest in God's peace. Ann Eichler, our Sunshine Lady, was busy sending cards to our ailing members: Mary Avsec, Elsie Barbis, Joanna Heinz, Matt Kajfez, Pete Knezevic, John Obat, Emeric Pausic, Rose Silva, Vicki Skarbez, and Mary Zimperman. It was nice to see Mary Z's cheerful face at the meeting; and we hear Vicki is coming along fine. Steps are still an obstacle, however. Al Pestotnik reported on Ronnie’s progress. She's hoping to rejoin us at meetings before too long. They are both thankful to John and Helen Kozlevchar and Matt and Fran Kajfez for all the help at the time of Ronnie's accident. They are looking forward to more HAPpy trips. Real troopers, both of them! Speaking of trips: Fran Kajfez has a Windsor Casino excursion on March 22, 2004. The sign-up sheet filled INSTANTLY, but there is always a waiting list. You may still get lucky... A 3-nite 4-days trip to Nashville, Tenn., most likely in September, is in the planning stage. More details next month. Get well fast, Matt, you are NEEDED! We welcomed new members: John and Lillian Dombrowski, Lillian Frederico; Frank and Mary Jane Hiti, Al and Grace Marinch, Joseph Mihelich; and Louis and Mary Mohar. 161 "Recycled Teenagers” were present; 118 are honorary members; and we still have 62 ladies- and gents-in-waiting! Here's a cute and clever idea: if you tell Chris Chermely your birth or wedding date, or any other significant day in your life, he will tell you what other special events happened that day. Congratulations and a big round of applause to members Celeste Frollo and John Hozjan. Celeste has been chosen, 'Woman of the Year" by Federation of Slovenian Homes, and John is "Man of the Year" for Collinwood Slovenian Home. A well-deserved honor! The celebratory banquet will be Saturday, March 20, 2004, at the St. Clair Slovenian National Home. Look for more details next time. Several members celebrated birthdays and were wished "many happy returns". No one claimed to have a wedding anniversary. Either they were not at the meeting, or maybe January is too cold to party. .. Our annual Dinner Dance will be Sunday, May 2, 2004. Linda Plečnik is our cook; she has plenty of experience, and is well-known in St. Vitus area. Nuff said... .More info later. Did you see the great article Jenny Mramor wrote about our Matt (Gladys) Zabukovec in the American Home? What a guy! We're all proud and happy to know and love him. After the meeting, most of us gathered in the Club room downstairs. It was another Wing Ding" day, and we all know a good thing when we see (or smell) it. John Hozjan sure has a way with wings. The cole slaw was outstanding, true Slovenian recipe! Big surprise: when it was time to go home we walked into a blizzard outside. Our end got over 5 inches by morning. Grandpa built the house in 1920 and there were several places upstairs and down where otherwise hollow dead space had been put to good use. They had one thing in common: access to the waist-high openings as by cupboard doors finished to match the rest of the woodwork. Three stairwells with two-stages separated by landings, had space underneath for clever storage space. Also, an otherwise useless space between the enclosed chimney and a nearby wall in the dining room housed a good-looking cupboard with a leaded-glass door, and two spacious linen drawers below. Even the basement toilet, though crudely enclosed by plank walls resembling an outhouse, made use of the space beneath stairs. All bid one of the nooks had shelves and finish-plastered walls inside. The cubby on the landing halfway to the second floor had only a crude plank floor. The raw lath and plaster interior was the back of a finished wall, and a sample of 1920 construction. All of the Christmas lights and ornaments from two generations were stored inside. For a child, these were merely hidey-holes, but as a young adult I became interested in how they had been designed and built. With a little thought, one could visualize the inner construction of the house. Even more interesting were the holes and shelves in the attic and basement. Also created by normal construction, these were numerous but small and unfinished. The gable ends of the attic provided a row of narrow pits into which any number of things could be stashed. Except for a plank floor trimmed to butt against the wall studs, the attic was unfinished. The gable end walls were the backs of the sheathing under the outside clapboards, and were divided into vertical spaces by the studs for the outside wall. What made these into a useful pit about eight or ten inches deep, was a ‘floor.’ Called a ‘fire-stop,’ these short two by fours were nailed between the studs. In theory, it slowed a fire from rising floor to floor, and I’m sure it did. But in practice, it made any post-construction electrical work a real pain. But, it did give the hidey-hole a bottom, without which it would be useless. While snooping around the attic as a kid, I dropped something that rolled to the wall and dropped out of sight. Blindly dipping into the pit gave me a scratched hand - a nail had missed the stud. From then on, I always took a flashlight to the attic when planning to explore these newly found hidey-holes. There were two more rows of these where the ceiling, which was merely the raw underside of the roof, met the floor on two sides. Because of the roof angle, you had to get on your belly to fit your head above these pits and see inside with a flashlight. Always expecting to find some treasure, I managed to check every opening but found very little. Several had a rusting clump of nails at the bottom, probably from 1920. There was a small pen knife in another, and others had unidentifiable debris at the bottom. One had a partially filled medicine bottle with a cork. “Wintergreen Oil” was typed on a dusty label from Cardinal Drug. Grandpa used this as a liniment for his rheumatism, but I never asked him about it. I didn’t want to advertise my snooping. I pulled the cork and sniffed the familiar odor. Still can’t imagine why it was there. A few years ago, I received one of those random mail-order catalogs, the kind that make you wonder why they would think I was interested in their stuff. They were selling all sorts of fragrant dry herbs and oils. I looked up wintergreen oil and was astounded at the price. I should have kept it, just for the bottle - it was a real antique. No treasure in the attic, but there was lots of interesting stuff in the basement. At ceiling level there were hidey-holes in the spaces between the floor joists above. The still at the top of the block wall was the shelf, the joists were the sides, and the sub-floor was the top of a neat little cubby with an open front. Just about every one had some old tobacco can or cigarette tins (containers I should have saved), each full of seldom used odds and ends. One was full of nails, the kind grandpa used to nail new soles on old shoes. The various-sized iron ‘feet’ upon which a shoe was soled, were in the next cubby. The upright iron stand that held these iron ‘feet’ at a comfortable height for nailing, was hanging in the wine cellar. The nail was driven through the edge of the new leather sole, and its point was bent and flattened when it struck the iron ‘foot.’ In a hard-to-reach corner cubby behind the panel of electrical wiring and a fuse box, was the grand prize. Wrapped in oily rags, a .32 H&R revolver and a Colt .45 automatic, but no bullets. (Many months later I came upon a tin box of bandages in the bathroom medicine chest. Surprisingly heavy, it contained several fat bullets, .45 caliber.) This is the way terrible accidents happen, but I was scared and confessed to grandpa (I knew better than to announce my find to Mom). He leveled with me. Why he had the .32 in the first place, he never said. But he told me that he had blanks hidden away, and that the gun was loaned out for stage plays at the Slovenian Home on Holmes Avenue. The Colt was Uncle Mike’s and was given to him by a friend in payment of a loan and had never been used. Both guns disappeared. I know not where. Against the wall behind the furnace, a full length church pew was a mainstay of our cellar for as long as I can remember. Dark reddish black and very heavy, I never got a complete history of its origin. My grandmother had done washing, ironing, and some cooking for the priests at St. Mary’s, long before she died in 1932 at the age of 47. My grandpa said it came from where the Masses were held before the church at the comer was built in 1906, but I don’t know for sure. It was used every day by the men before and after work, and in the winter, the rubber boots were lined up under the bench and made a good place to sit when pulling them on. Best of all, for my exploring, it was the perfect height to stand on and reach all the cubbies above its length. Aside from more tobacco tins of odds and ends, nothing too exciting emerged. There was a U.S. Army steel helmet from the First World War. If I remember right, Mom told me it belonged to Dr. Skur, our family doctor. There was also a Fr. Skur at St. Mary’s well before I was bom. I think they were brothers. Other than my grandmother’s connection with the church, probably in Fr. Skur’s time, I haven’t a clue why this helmet was in our basement. Perhaps one of our readers knows. For Rent E. 200 & Neff Large one bedroom apt. New appliances and carpet. Moments in Life There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real! When the door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we don't see the one, which has been open for us. Don't go for looks; they can deceive. Don't go for wealth; even that fades away. Go for someone who makes you smile, because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright. Find the one that makes your heart smile. Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; De what you want to be, aecause you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do. May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy. The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes their way. he brightest future will always 3e based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches. When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Mass Post WWH Grave Memorial Unveiled The first memorial that marks a burial ground of mass post-WWIl killings was unveiled at Trnovo near Nova Gorica in western Slovenia. A metal bell bearing the inscription: “To the victims of war and post-war killings” was set in place at a 150-meter deep pit in which speleologists found a large number of human skeletons back in 1990. About 200 similar bells will be erected at other burial grounds around Slovenia. The project is expected to take a decade to complete. Otvoritev mariborske medicinske fakultete Po izvolitvi akademskega .zbora, senata in dekana so pretekli petek v Mariboru naredili še zadnji korak pri ustanavljanju druge slovenske medicinske fakultete. Novico je prizadetim redakcijam (poleg slovenske so še slovaška, romunska, poljska, litovska, latvijska, madžarska, češka, estonska in bolgarska redakcija) sporočilo vodstvo VGA. Ur. Svoje sogovornike - predvsem seveda potomcev žrtev, ob njih pa likvidatorja, partizanskega politkomisarja, bivšega partizana, zgodovinarje, posede pred kamero v njihovem domačem okolju. Posamične pripovedi nadgradi s fotografijami žrtev in njihovih takratnih domovanj, morebitnimi pismi in današnjimi posnetki kraja njihovih u-smrtitev, kadar so ti znani. Ni neopazno, da kar nekajkrat s kamero preleti naravo; slovenski gozdovi in travniki so seveda lepi, sami v sebi že davno zaceljeni, a še zmeraj skrivajo številne nepojasnjene zgodbe nasilno prekinjenega življenja. Knjiga ni zgodovina domobranskih bojev, pora-Zov in zmag. DSPB Tabor Cleveland, Ohio Bučar, pod čigar taktirko so pred dobrim desetletjem vse parlamentarne stranke (spet breŽ SNS) sklenile znameniti dogovor o skupnem prizadevanju za vstop v evropsko integracijo. Okoli poldneva so ratificirano pogodbo zalili še s priložnostnim šampanjcem. 12) Boris Mlakar, Slovensko domobranstvo, 1943-1945 (Slovenska Matica, Ljubljana 2003, 544 str.) Raziskave javnega mnenja dokazujejo, da ameriška javnost ni naklonjena imperializmu, temveč podpira multilateralizem in uporabo OZN. Misijonska srečanja in pomenki 1511.
