Ta trditev, ki jo najdemo v okrožnici papeža Janeza Pavla II. - Odrešenikova Mati - nas vabi, da posta-vimo v središce današnjega praznicnega bogoslužja tisto hvalnico, ki jo Elizabeta izreka Mariji, ko ta prihaja k njej na obisk. Elizabetine besede imajo dvojni pomen: vsebujejo blagoslov in blagrovanje. Kot prvo omenjamo besedo »blagoslov«, ki je sprejeta v najlepšo marijansko molitev Zdrava Marija: »Blagoslovljena ti med že-nami in blagoslovljen sad tvojega telesa!« Poznavalci Svetega pisma razlagajo, da ta vzklik posnema blagoslov, ki so ga prebival-ci Betulije vzklikali junakinji Juditi: »Blago-slovljena si ti, hci, od Gospoda, Boga Najvišjega, pred vsem ženami na zemlji!« (Jt 13,23). Zaradi Elizabetinega pozdrava je Cerkev dala Mariji najvišji naslov, ki ga je slovesno razglasil koncil v Efezu leta 431, prvi izmed enajstih koncilov, ki so govorili o Mariji: Marija je Theotokos, kar v grškem jeziku pomeni »božja Mati«. V Marijinem narocju se ure-snicuje najvecja bližina Boga med ljudmi. Ona je tako postala popoln šotor zaveze med Bogom in cloveštvom, dokoncni tempelj in veliki Sion. Sv. Ambrož je zapisal: »Marija je tempelj Boga samega, ne pa tempeljski Bog.« Spoznanje, da je Marija kot novi tempelj Boga samega, je razvidno med drugim tudi iz besedila evangelista Luka. To besedilo natancno ponavlja pripoved vstopa skrinje zaveze v Jeruzalem, ki ga je bil pravkar osvobodil David (2 Sam 6). Navajamo samo dve pomembni vzporednici: Marija je ostala tri mesece v Elizabetinem domu, skrinja zaveze pa je ostala tri mesece v hiši Obededoma, preden je bila dokoncno postavljena na Sionu; Elizabetin vzklik (»Odkod meni to, da prihaja k meni mati mojega Gospoda?«) ustreza Davidovem vzkliku (»Kako naj pride k meni skrinja Gospodova?«). Osrednja resnica Marijinega cešcenja je nje-no božje materinstvo, v katerem se srecujeta nebo in zemlja, božje in cloveško. Pomenljive so besede Jeana P. Sartra, sicer nevernega avtorja: »Marija nas opominja, da je Jezus njen sin in da je njen otrok Bog. Ko ga gleda in premišljuje: ta Bog je moj sin. To božje telo je moje telo. Jaz sem mu dala življenje, ima moje oci, podoba njegovih ustnic je podoba mojih ustnic; tako podoben mi je. On je Bog, in vendar mi je tako podoben. Še nobena žena ni nikoli na tak nacin imela Boga za svojega, Boga kot otroka, ki ga lahko vzame v narocje, ga ljubkuje, živega Boga, ki diha in se smehlja, Boga, ki se ga lahko dotakne in se mu smeji.« (Navedek iz antologije Vsak dan z Marijo - Ogni gior-no con Maria, Ed. Paoline). Poglejmo drugo Elizabetino besedo - blagro-vanje. Gre za prvi evangeljski blagor, ki se v gr-škem jeziku dobesedno glasi: »Blagor ti, verni-ca!» To je drugi cudovit Marijin naslov. Kakor naslov »božja Mati« pomeni predvsem božji dar Mariji, tako naslov »vernica« izraža Marijin osebni odgovor. Papeževa okrožnica nas spod-buja k orisu Marijine »pokoršcine veri« z vsemi teminami, v njenem duhovnem potovanju. To potovanje v veri se pricne z besedo »zgodi se« (»fiat«) in se razcveti ob obisku Elizabete. Potovanje se nadaljuje v prerokbah Simeona (»Tvojo dušo bo presunil mec«) - od tega trenut-ka se Marijina pot nadaljuje v »somraku vere«, skozi težke dogodke, kot so dvanajstletni Jezus v templju, ko Marija »ni razumela«, vendar je »vse, kar se je zgodilo, ohranila v svojem sr-cu« (Lk 2,50-51). Marijina pot je pot vere, ki se kon-ca na Golgoti, kjer je Marija v »somraku vere« s smrtjo svojega Sina izgubila vse in prejela vse s tem, da je postala Mati Cerkve (»Žena, glej tvoj sin!«). (Prim. The monasteries are painted from foundation to roof, on the outside and often on the inside with intricate icons. When you stand inside, it feels as if you have been taken into the icons themselves and are living the mysteries they depict from within. This is the whole point. These icons are a prayer in them-selves and convey in brilliant artistic form the mys- tery that they illustrate. By con-templating the images, we learn how to live in the mystery. This is especially true of the icons for today’s feast. Gospel Teaching In the Gospels Jesus does not single his mother out for honour because of her biological role but responds to her as someone who hears God’s word and gives it flesh and bones. Like all his disci-ples, Mary walks by faith and not by sight. She treasures what words she has received of Jesus, pondering them in her heart. Her prayer gives her insight into what is ungodly in the world and the faith and confidence that she can do something about it, despite her low-ly status. Where pictures of the Nativity typically show Mary cradling the body of her son, wrapped in swaddling clothes, Orthodox icons of the Dormition of the Mother of God – which they celebrate on the same day as we celebrate this feast of the Assump-tion of the Blessed Virgin Mary – show Jesus cra-dling in his arms the body and soul of his mother, wrapped in a shroud as she is born into everlasting life. This is a foretaste for us of our own rising into glory after death. How do we catch a glimpse of this glory to come? The Mary of the Magnificat glories in the power of God who overturns all the signs of toxic power within society. God humbles the oppressor, forcing those sated with consumption to face their own emptiness while lavishly giving to those who are poor and hungry what is theirs by human right. Mary is portrayed as a warrior queen, challenging the forces of sin and human greed in the name of the God whose power transforms our world through our prayer and action and our refusal to give evil the last word. Application Mary can help us find a way to draw closer to Jesus and to one another. In John’s Gospel the be-loved disciple is a model for all the followers of Christ. The dying Jesus tells him to cherish Mary as his mother, and she is told to care for him as her son. When the Church is born by the power of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, Mary is there, at the heart of the com-munity of those who worship Jesus and seek in his name to create a world after God’s own heart. Her questions in the Gospel nar-ratives are our questions – how is it that God can work through such weak instru-ments as we feel ourselves to be? Why does God sometimes seem to hide from us when we search with such anxiety? How can the tasteless water of our lives be turned into the life-giving wine of God’s grace? Her song can also be our song, exulting in a God who enters fully into all that is fragile and earthy in human experience, into the blood and guts of our human bodies but also into their beauty and their capacity to give and receive love. God transforms the daily details of our lives into a song of glory. The fullness of life is ours for the asking, if we are willing to pay attention to God’s word and, like Mary, treasure all that we know of Jesus and ponder it in our hearts. God will dethrone the false idols we create and teach us to nurture a spirit of grateful humility. God will satisfy our deep-est hungers if we are willing to turn away from false securities. Above all, God will bless us with mercy when we face the truth of our own poverty with hope and confidence. We are blessed not because, by some accident of birth, we are members of the Church, but because we have learned to hear the word of God and keep it. THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIGIN MARY Response: At your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir. First Reading Apocalypse 11:19; 12:1-6. 10 Mary is the archetypal disciple in whom we see, as in a mirror, all that we can become through God’s grace, despite our human weakness. The book of the Apocalypse links us to the woman who, through the birth of her son, is instrumental in crushing the pow-er of evil. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 15:20-26 Orthodox icons of the Dormition of Mary tell of the belief that at her death Mary was taken up body and soul into heaven as a foretaste of the resurrection. They express the hope that all human experience is destined for glory through the saving power of Jesus. Gospel Luke 1:39-56 As an unmarried woman Mary had no status in Israel. As an unmarried mother she risked public shame and death by stoning. She had nothing, yet she believed that God’s power could make of her a blessing for all the world. “Blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.” LOOKING DEEPER INTO OUR OWN DIALOGUE New course at McMaster explores language and identity among immigrant communities. In her 15 years in the classroom, a McMaster Uni-versity Italian teacher has noticed a trend among stu-dents. "I was finding enrol-ments were really low in the language courses, but still really high in a cultural studies course where the students were not required to learn any lan-guage whatsoever," said Wendy D'Angelo, assistant professor of Italian and linguistics. "Yet so many stu-dents identify very proudly with being Italian." As a linguist, she wondered why. So D'An-gelo developed a course that she said "may offer insights into the trends that we’re notic-ing" — not just in Italian language courses, but across Hamilton. In the first few classes of Heritage Lan-guages in the Hamilton Diaspora, a new fourth year seminar, students will choose a research project that explores the relationship between language and identity among the city's immigrant communities. "What we're really focused on, is under-standing identity formation among immi-grants to the Hamilton region," she said. "The idea is that there is a connection be-tween language and identity for members of diasporas." Projects will focus on topics such as whether heritage language — the languages of immigrants to Canada — programs meet a group's needs, inclusivity and government language policies, and conflict related to cus-toms and traditions. Italian, Jewish, Syrian, Ghanaian, Kurdish, Tamil, Polish, Vietnamese and Dutch are among the area's diasporas that students may study. Students will work closely with community partners — places of worship, language pro-grams and teachers, cultural associations and other community members — and use inter-views, historical archives and other tools for research. At the end of the semester, the class will share its findings with the public on a website. "Linguistics are there to serve communi-ties, clients and help the clients themselves identify what their needs are," she said. "Through conversations and through different types of analyses ... we can sort of help deter-mine what some of those needs are." GREGORIJU V HAMILTONU Pri naši Villa Slovenia« se je danes zopet praznovalo. Gospa Marija Korošec je praznovala svoj 85. rojstni dan in povabila stanovalce Ville Slovenije, da se ji pridružijo. Cestitke in vse dobro. V šolskem letu 2020-2021 je slovenska šola, tako kot druge šole, delovala sa-mo preko interneta. Zato se nekateri niso od prej »v ži-vo« poznali. Uciteljici, Sandy in Lorie, sta jih v cetrtek po-poldne povabile na kratko srecanje in sladoled. Vsi niso mogli priti, nekateri pa so le prišli in se spoznali in pohla-dili. Kako bo obratovala slo-venska šola v jeseni, je zaen-krat še »prehitro« sklepati. Vse odvisno od šolskega centra, kako se bodo odloci-li. Sicer pa je še nekaj tednov do zacetka pouka in se bo v kratkem zvedelo, kaj bodo sklenili. K njegovim zadnjim izpricanim besedam spada stavek, ki je bil izrecen v peklu Auschwitza: »Sovraštvo ni ustvarjalna moc, ustvarjalna je le lju-bezen!« Z velikodušno podaritvijo svojega življenja je Kolbe v polnosti izpolnil Jezusove besede, zapisa-ne v Janezovem evangeliju (15,13): »Nihce nima vecje ljubezni, kakor je ta, da kdo dá svoje življenje za svoje prijatelje.« »Spominjajmo se, da ljubezen živi in se hrani z darovanjem. Zahvaljujmo se Brezmadežni za notra-nji mir, za navdušeno ljubezen, vendar ne pozabi-mo, da vse to, ceprav lepo in dobro, še zdalec ni bistvo ljubezni. Ljubezen, nasprotno, popolna ljube-zen obstaja tudi brez tega. Vrhunec ljubezni je na tisti stopnji, ki jo je dosegel Jezus na križu, ko je re-kel: ›Moj Bog, moj Bog, zakaj si me zapustil!‹ Brez darovanja ni ljubezni.« Sv. Maksimilijan Kolbe (1894–1941), mi-norit in predan castilec Brezmadežne Device Marije, je v koncentracijskem taborišcu Oswi-ecim (Auschwitz) na Poljskem namesto dru-žinskega oceta Franciška Gajowniczeka pro-stovoljno prestal muceniško smrt pred 80 leti, na dan pred praznikom Marijinega vne-bovzetja, 14. avgusta leta 1941. SLOVENSKA KAPELA V WASHINGTONU JUTRI PRAZNUJE 50 LET Ideja o njeni gradnji se je zacela s Cirilom Žebotom, ki je takrat delal na univerzi Geor-getown v Washingtonu. Do njega je prek pred-stojnikov prišla ideja o postavitvi slovenske kapele v Baziliki nacionalnega svetišca Brezmadežnega spocetja. Kapela je v spod-njem delu, kjer je kripta, v kateri imajo razlicni narodi svoje kapele. Le zakaj je ne bi imeli tudi Slovenci? Leta 1968 je v Washingtonu imela letno konferenco Slovenska ženska zveza in sprejela resolucijo za zbira-nje denarnih sredstev za gradnjo kapele. Nato so ustanovili Odbor Slovencev v Washingtonu, ki je organiziral zbiranje sredstev - 70 000 dolarjev. V Cle-velandu so ustanovili fond in donacije so se zacele vse od enega dolarja in vec. Leta 1969, na 100. oblet-nico Baragove smrti, so 19. januarja podpisali pogod-bo o graditvi kapele. V Washingtonu živeci Slovenci so pripravili brošu-ro o zgodovini kršcanstva na Slovenskem, s pomocjo arhitektov pripravili osnutek opreme kapele in k so-delovanju povabili umetnika Franceta Goršeta. Ta je izdelal 4 marmorne reliefe – na 1. je krst princa Go-razda, na drugem je upodobljen Friderik Baraga z Indijanci, tretji ponazarja škofa Slomška z mladino, na cetrtem so slovenski migranti v Združenih drža-vah. Leta 1969 so slovenski škofje kapeli podarili kopi-jo upodobitve Marije Pomagaj umetnika Leopolda Layerja, Brezijanske Marije za notranjost kapele. V njej je tudi oltarcek v obliki knežjega kamna, kapela pa je po notranjosti posejana z razlicnimi citati Fride-rika Barage, Antona Martina Slomška in Ivana Can-karja. 15. avgusta 1971 je bila posvecena. Iskrene cestitke staršema ob krstu druge-ga otroka. Naj ju spremlja božji blagoslov in priprošnja nebeške matere Marije. Prvotno je bil krst nacrtovan za aprila 2020, potem pa je Covid-19 vse premešal. Cilj naše kampanje je v treh letih zbrati vsoto $200,000.00 za našo župnijo. Nekateri še vedno ne razumejo, da vse, kar boste darovali preko te kampanje, bo prejela naša župnija in še 10% iz skupnega sklada. Škofijski uradi pa bodo vodili vse racunovodske zadeve, tako, da nam ne bo potrebno tega dela urejati. V Vestniku objavimo koliko ste »obljubili« da boste darovali za kampanjo za našo žup-nijo preko škofijskega racuna in koliko je že dejansko »vplacanega«. OBHAJILO - FIRST COMMUNION V nedeljo, 8. avgusta 2021 je pet naših pr-voobhajancev prejelo Jezusa v svoja srca. 1. Holly Archer 2. Anthony Bartolac 3. Nina Lavric 4. Anna Marcy 5. Tyler Tompa Lansko leto zaradi Covida-19 nismo imeli prvega svetega obhajila, letos je koncem maja tudi odpadlo, ker so bile cerkve še zaprte. V nedeljo, pa smo le praznovali skupaj z našimi najmlajšimi. V petek, pred vecerno mašo, smo se zbrali s starši in prvoobhajanci za kratko pripravo in spoved. V nedeljo so otroci tokrat sedeli skupaj s svojimi starši. Vsaka družina je imela rezervira-no po eno klop. Pri maši so starši prebrali beri-li, prvoobhajanci pa prošnje in zahvale po ob-hajilu. Otroci so prejeli spomincek in potrdilo o prejetem prvem obhajilu Na koncu pa smo se še poslikali za spomin na to posebno leto. Iskrena hvala Lorie Mramor za pomoc pri pripravi prvoobhajancev in spremljanju med samo mašo. Hvala Olgi Glavac za lepo okrasi-tev cerkve, Tonyju Horvatu za slikanje, Jožetu Razpotniku in Ivanu Veglju za upravljanje racunalnikov in video kamere. Hvala vsem, ki ste se udeležili svete maše in sodelovali po svojih moceh z molitvijo in petjem. Vsako ob-hajanje zakramentov je za župnijo velik dogo-dek, saj pomeni, da imamo mlade družine, ki so še povezane z našo župnijo in želijo, da tudi otroci tukaj prejmejo zakramente. K prvemu sv. obhajilu gredo otroci lahko tudi s šolo kjer hodijo, za sveto birmo pa se morajo odlociti, ker zakrament sv. birme lahko prejmemo samo enkrat.
