First Reading Genesis 18:1-10 Abraham and Sarah unwittingly offer hospitality to God and receive God’s blessing. Second Reading Colossians 1:24-28 Paul unites his own sufferings with those of Christ for the Church. Gospel Luke 10:38-42 On being welcomed into their home, Jesus teaches Martha and Mary the meaning of true hospitality. “Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.” Illustration Andrei Rublev was perhaps the greatest and most well-known icon painter of all time. He probably lived near Moscow and died around the year 1430. In 1988 the Russian Orthodox Church canonised him as a saint. But little is known about his life for certain, alt-hough in 1966 an epic film drama based on him was made by the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky; it has been rated by critics as one of the greatest films ever released. There’s a very famous icon by Rublev based on the story in our Old Testament read-ing today. It depicts the three angelic visitors received by Abraham and Sarah at the Oak of Mamre. They are sitting around three sides of a rectangular table, with a cup on the table between them. The space on the fourth side of the table, at the front of the icon, is vacant. Like all icons, it’s full of symbolism. It’s known as the icon of the Trinity – the three visitors seated around the table being interpreted as symbolising the three persons of the Holy Trinity, and the space at the front as being left free for the viewer. It shows how we are all invited to share the hospitality of communion with God the Holy Trinity. Gospel Teaching Since ancient times, as the Old Testament story demonstrates, hospitality – being will-ing to open homes and share food with visi-tors of all kinds, friends and strangers, espe-cially those in need – has been an important part of Middle Eastern culture. It is also a basic, practical doing of love. It is this deeply human way of friendship that is at the heart of the ways in which God comes to people in today’s readings. For Abraham and Sarah, their hospitality to the mysterious visitors marks a turning point in their lives, as the gift of the child the couple thought they could never have is promised. A whole people is born from this simple act of welcoming the strangers and tending to their needs. For Martha in today’s Gospel, the great gift of receiving Jesus into her home is a blessing – but also a challenge. Perhaps Martha’s difficulty, as far as Jesus is concerned, is that she is forgetting something that lies at the heart of all our practical care. When we cook for guests, when we wel-come people into our homes and share a bit of our lives with them, the danger is that it is the “stuff” of our caring that becomes the focus, rather than the person we are wel-coming. Sometimes it may be food and drink and practical actions of caring that are precisely what is needed. But very often what is just as important, if not more so, is a friendly and personal welcome and an ear to listen – and it’s easy for this to get neglected among all the practicalities. Application Our world today is one in which hospitality is much needed. If we look at our own cities and towns, we can see the loneliness that is so often to be found there: for exam-ple, in the elderly, housebound or disabled people who may see hardly another person from day to day, week to week; or in the homeless people whom we simply pass by on the street. For many people, such feelings of loneliness were experienced or exacerbated by times of enforced isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic. It we look further afield, we can see the refugees leaving everything behind and fleeing war, oppression and suffering, the many thousands of dis-placed people of our time, desperate to find a place of wel-come and safety. Wherever we look, there is a call to share and befriend. And what is often needed above all is a listen-ing ear, to hear their stories. This call is also a challenge, as it was for Martha. True hospitality lies in meeting the person whom we welcome. We need to learn to sit still with those we are called to care for, to listen to them and to let them know they are heard. Too often our fretting over “so many things”, as Jesus says, may get in the way of truly caring. But if we can keep love of and care for the person central, our moments of generosity and hospitality will also be moments of meeting God, and then we will take our place at table in communion with the divine Trinity.
