AMERICAN IN SPIRIT FOREIGN IN LANGUAGE ONLY AMERICAN HOME SLOVENIAN MORNING DAILY NEWSPAPER NO. 296 CLEVELAND, OHIO, SATURDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 18, 1937 LETO XL — VOL. 1938 ne more deliti brezposelne zavarovalnine. V to blagajno prispeva danes 35,000,000 ameriških delavcev in uslužbencev in nad tri milijone delodajalcev. 60,000 nacionalistov vjetih v past v Španiji Madrid, 18. decembra. Vpri-?-orjen bo sijajen božični tableau, V katerem bo predstavljala Miss Ann Orenick Devico Marijo, do-c'itn bo Jeanette Juttner-Perdan Pela kot solistinja. Delavski vodja prerokuje slabo delavsko zimo Cleveland. — Thomas Lene-han, tajnik The Cleveland Federation of Labor, je včeraj izjavil, da stoji delavstvo v Clevelan-du nasproti najslabši zimi, kar jih pomni tekom zadnjih 16 let. Ta prepir so industrijalisti izrabili v svoje namene in povzročili umetno krizo. Otroci in ženske so glasno jokali v zaporih, dokler niso bili izpuščeni. Ako Japonska ne more prisiliti Kajšeka, da se*vrne v Nanking, tedaj ne more z ničemur skleniti miru. V tem slučaji* preostajajo Japonski tri posta: 1. Japonska lahko organizira laži-vlado v Nankingu, katero prizna in naredi z njo mir, kakoršnjega bo Japonska diktirala. 2. Njene domače finance so bankrotne. In kaj če v takem položaju nastopi Rusija in napade izmozgano Japonsko? To so trije ne-maniči, v vsakem oziru prav precej zanemarjeni. Miselno predstavlja igra boj hudega in dobrega v človeku, zmago dobrote nad sirovostjo. Dobrota božjega Deteta jih išče v njihovi bedi in naredi i? falotov božje in dobre ljudi. Ako nobena druga stvar, usmiljenje in sočutje z revnimi in potrebnimi jih bo pripeljalo nazaj k Bogu. So if you, you, and you want to swim come to the Bathhouse this Monday from 7 to 8, or else! time I would like to take occasion to write at least something about the most bloody civil war in history which is at this very time raging throughout Spain. I feel qualified for this from my many years' residence in Spain; from connections, some of which I had with people who today hold the destiny of Spain,—acquaintances which I made particularly in industry and among- the working classes; and more so from my horrible experiences for ten months in the civil war which I had the unhappy privelege of seeing from close quarters and to witness day after day its most horrible details. On these qualifications I shall be able to give a truthful and impartial picture of the very revolution, its primary causes and everyday horrors. I have brought official documents and photographs taken on actual scenes. I could easily produce them for the reader but some of the murdered persons' relatives are still alive and it would be dangerous to publish the pictures; for red authorities would certainly take revenge on them. Until a few weeks ago, when I had to leave Spain, I lived in the territory which is at present controlled by the red armada,—right in the city from where the fate of Spain is directed,— the center of the international red brigade;—where the notorious Soviet General Kleber has his supreme general staff and headquarters, in the city of Albacete. This despot demolished Malaga so that this city, we might say, does not exist today. He is the soul of red Spain. In my article I shall also mention the occurrences which took place in Albacete which today is the most important coastal town of red Spain. I shall tell some of my personal experiences, as I watched with my own eyes the "popular tribunals" proceeding against inhabitants in a way which far surpasses the terrors of the Soviet Revolution in Rusia—ithe manner in - which these red "popular tribunals" day after day sat in session and condemned to death;—the way daily from ten to fifteen young men went to the outskirts of town and were shot as so many dogs. Among the unfortunates were as many Republicans as Nationalists. Republicans, yes, but these were representatives of the Spanish "government." Why only a vague suspicion, a secret accusation, and the "popular tribunes" come, after them the military troops, and then a few shots outside of town. Of all this I shall write. I also hope to tell how Marxian propaganda in a few years has brought about disorder of the worst kind in this country which before lived in peace and about which was heard only favorable news; and has changed the Spanish people into wild mobs which are overrunning the country and leaving in their wake only bloodshed and incendiarism. Many readers know Malaga, that pearl of the Mediterranean Sea, where ships of the Jugoslav Lloyd lines were wont to stop regularly in their day. I would invite all to visit this town at their first opportunity, so that they will see with their own eyes the things I saw myself, in other words, a heap of ruins instead of a flourishing settlement. (To Be Continued) The Younger Set at SI. Christine's MY EXPERIENCES IN SPAIN by ERNEST JERMAN EDITOR'S NOTE: The following is a translation of ari article which originally appeared in the "SLOVENEC," a Catholic daily, published at Ljubljana, Jugoslavia The author, Ernest Jerman, is an unknown, who returned to his home country after fleeing Spain where he had resided for twenty years as an immigrant. Upon his return to Jugoslavia he wrote this eye-witness account of the Spanish revolution. His article was reprinted in tihe "AMERIŠKA DOMOVINA" and "GLASILO K. S. K. J." in serial form during July, and August last. The following translation was especially prepared for the readers of the English page. • Ljubljana, Jugoslavia. May 1937 After many years' absence from my beautiful Slovene homeland, an absence which was spent for the most part in Spain where I lived for twenty years, I have once more returned home among the Slovenes. It was a swell fest, even if "yee olde Ed" made a couple futile attempts to cut short this sleep of the just ... It would be a long story were we to tell it all. Suffice it to say that we were here and there and everywhere, since we last appeared in print. Before going into our recent literary (?) hibernation we made efforts to interest some capable parties to take over this column and make it really worthwhile with their more youthful chatter. There, for instance, is our Mary, formerly on high school reportorial staffs; there's Irene, even at present a shining light on the same firmament; and others, too. "Al," with much experience right in this space, has deserted us. But, now we just heard from Frank, "the king," that he is willing to try his hand at it. No doubt, he'll have a staff of helpers; sooo, we hope this inaugurates another series of flashes about, and of interest to, what we have come to call our younger set. Additions to our Set Gosh, there's material galore for use under this heading! All kinds of new arrivals in our district! There are the Frank Pikes on Ivan; the Joseph Klemencics on Nicholas; Martin and Mrs. Kolovich from Pittsburgh on Lakeland; Tekavecs on Gol-ler, Retars on Cherokee; Maussers from St. Franci's on Beckford; Edward and Mrs. Carrol on Ball; Ralph and Mrs. Baehr on Nauman; Ralph and Mrs. Hirsch on Arms; Crenshaws from distant Arkansas on Bliss; Albert and Mrs. Slaypah from Lorain on Tracy; John and Mrs. Peters on Zeman; the Tom Gribbons on E. 200th! Victor Gribbons on E. 222nd; Mike and Mrs. Pinculic, with John and Mrs. Okicki, also new arrivals, together in business at 237th and Lakeland; Petricks on E. 220th; Frank and Mrs. Kosmerls on E. 230tli; Frank and Mis. Kovacic on Arms; and some others, whos« names momentarily escape us. Practically all these moved into the sphere of activity of our set during the past six months. We "old timers" will, and should, do our utmost to make them feel welcome and at home as soon as possible. Secretaries of our various church groups, like the Guild, Sodality and Holy Name Society, should find in these data new fields for vigorous activity for friendly contacts and membership drives. Above named are all rightfully -members of what we have always included in the meaning of our "Younger Set." Personally, we know them all as splendid additions to our community and parish and hope they will stay permanently and not hesitate to approach us in spite of what they may hear about us "oldtimers" from chronic cranks and soured malcontents. We're glad you're here, we would like you to feel that we want you and need you, and we hope you'll like us, just a little bit in return. At the Bazaar This may be "ancient history" to some, but to us it's still poignantly alive in pleasant memory. Time, and partly disposition, did not permit us thus far to make acknowledgement to the Younger Set for their wonderful help during those toying days. Incidentally, such an affair is too big in scope to allow us to make accurate recognition to every single individual. We'll do the best we can and trust that unwitting slip-ups will be condoned in ladylike and gentlemanly manner. There, for instance, was the Guild stand with its beautiful display of intricate womanly handwork. How can we possibly know all individual makers of thousands of stitches! But, we must state that we are grateful to all members of the Guild's sewing circle as well as to Mesdames Repa-sky, Macy, Sternberg, Lesh, Nosse, Fox, Posch, Turk, Simens and Ljubi, who offered their time and energies so generously at that booth during the bazaar. Then we mustn't forget Mrs. Bradač and Mrs. Baitt at their unpleasant task at the door. Right opposite was an office with its tedious tasks for Mrs. Mary Hochevar and Mrs. Molly Krall, assisted by Mrs. Julia Boldin. Mrs. Bolek and Mrs. Cercek also had their hands full at another spot. And Teddie Rossman's wheel couldn't have been what it was without the almost unreplaceable capabilities and tireless nightly cashiering of Anne, whom Ted himself affectionately calls "ma," and whom we all know as Mrs. Rossman. But, it wasn't just a women's affair! Joe Nosse, Ed Zimperman, Rudy Baitt, John f-'rimozic, Dolph Slabe, John Omerza, Joseph Hočevar, Geo. Heornig, Rudy Krall, Frank Laurich, George Langa, Joie Robert, Frank Smaltz are just younger men whose services were ours during that time. Which reminds us, that we must not run the risk of incurring the ire of our young ladies by omitting at least a cursory mention of them, too. For, after all, their assistance was not merely decorative! There were Misses Mary Gombach, Helen Fox, Dot Sternberg, Irene Mlach, Josephine Cervan, at present our own "dowager queen," Rose Kraince, Mary Intihar, Mary Golinar, Mary Zajc, Anna Gre-gorc, wshose work at various spots helped spell that GRAND SUCCESS. A very generous share of that success was, of course, due to Misses Therese Potokar, Therese Skur, Rose Stepic, Mary Gombach and Mary Golinar, who are, with their families and particularly their good mothers most deserving of even repeated mention because of their wonderful work in the popularity contest. Led by the two Tessies, Potokar and Skur, they broke all existing records and put the contest across with a real and resounding bang. Miss Therese Potokar led the field with a comfortable margin, and now reigns as our own Popularity Queen at St. Christine's May her reign be pleasant and her example emulated next year. Space and time prevent us from showing you her picture in this edition. But, we'll show her to you real soon. For, we're proud of her and her work! Christmas Next week will be a busy one; so we don't know what Frank Primoznik and the rest of us will be able to put together. We, therefore, wish you all a happy and a joyous Christmas. In this greeting we want to include the "eds" of all neighboring columns, owners and entire staff of "American Home," who are always so willing to help us with publicity and otherwise, friends everywhere, all patient readers of this hurried coljumn, and certainly not least of all our parishioners and, among them, particularly members of "The Set." School Newsette You should see our little ones these days! Poor Sisters are frantically trying to stretch short hours to get in all rehearsals for development of future Shirleys and Freddies, who are to appear at our annual children's Chrustmas entertainment on Sunday, December 26. Just twice a year these tots appeal to you for patronage. Elsewhere they have them almost on neighborhood canvasses with this and that and the other thing. Here we positively restrict that and concentrate on these two occasions. May we not hope, then, that you will appreciatively respond, when they rap on your door and ask you to take a 30c ticket to a dollar's worth of entertainment, smiles and wholesome enjoyment?!! Keep that date free, won't you, please! It's Sunday, Dec. 26th; and it's the day our kiddies are preparing for YOU ... Catholic Youth Organization Yesiree . . . One of its active, manifestations will be a parochial basketball league. Frank Laurich, John Luzar, Albert Phillips and Mike Juratovac attended a meeting last Monday night and came home quite enthusiastic about the entire project. We've been busy, too. We've made arrangements for use of Roosevelt gym on Mondays and Wednesdays of every week, starting with Jan. 3rd, right after the holiday recess. One night will be for boys, the other for girls and young ladies. But, you'll have to do your share if you want the venture and your participation in the movement to become the success it deserves to be. But "Illirija" insists on forging ahead. Although they have to focus their attentions on church music throughout the year they manage to tread off the beaten path many times a year so they can bring pleasure to others besides our parishioners. In spite of this activity they continue to do remarkable work. All this is a preliminary to our announcement that on February 28, 1938, after numerous requests and pleadings, Illirija is to present a play "Micki je treba moža." Everyone interested, please keep this date in mind; it's the Sunday before Lent. Next Thursday, the choir is having a Christmas party. A tree has been premised; there will be exchanging of gifts; and maybe a Santa Claus,— who knows! The singers are working hard on the new Mass and other new material that will be presented on Christmas eve. The Rev. Vodušek exclaimed that in all the many churches he has been, throughout the States he has yet to hear a group that has as many unfamiliar and beautiful Slovenian hymns as he had heard at our church. It is through the zealous work of our directors; the continual corresponding; being on the alert at all times for anything unusual and appropriate. Of course, the traditional hymns are also to be sung on Christmas eve, for, can there be a Christmas without "Silent Night, Holy Night?" It is our extreme pleasure to introduce to you our former members who have returned to our midst. Mrs. Alice Salmich-Kapel has rejoined the soprano ranks. Messrs. John Kogoy All Around Town A TRIP TO THE MEDITERRANEAN by DORIS MARIE BIRTIC (Continuation.) . From Italy we made our way to mysterious Egypt, across the traditionally and truly blue — Middle Sea —the Mediterranean. Upon our arrival at Alexandria, we took a train for a three hour ride to Cairo. The coaches were very comfortable, but the dust came in through the windows and settled upon us as we passed through the sandy area malting us feel grimy. At times it was very difficult to breathe because with every inhalation we took in an enormous quantity of sand granules. We didn't dare shut the windows because the heat would have been unbearable. Nevertheless our journey was intensely interesting. , Every now and then, we came across tiny mud houses, built one on top of the other; the primitive dwellings of some ultra-conservative natives who still cling to the customs of their ancestors. Dusky sheiks in white turbans and long flowing, supposedly white robes sauntered along the highway at the side of shaggy pack-camels. Occasionally an entire caravan could be seen wending its way at a ridiculously slow pace to the next village. —■ Everybody takes their time here. The women were dressed in black from head to foot; their faces were partially concealed by veils which hung down their cheek bones; only their large somber eyes were in view. The women worked in cotton fields," and went to market for provisions. Oftentimes we saw them trodding on the hot sand, balancing large baskets of foodstuffs on their heads while the menfolk, empty-handed of course, rede beside them on donkeys or camels. It was almost evening when our train puffed into Cairo. We were soon besieged by a mob of native porters from various hotels who insisted on telling us all about the modern conveniences of their particular establishment, hoping that they could induce us to patronize them although we told them dozens of times that our /'reservations had already been made. But try as we may we could not get rid of them; they kept tagging along, pestering us with chatter even though we were definitely not interested. Finally a native policeman, sensing that we were somewhat annoyed, asked us if we hac\ any use for our followers. We replied emphatically that we didn't. He then told them in a torrent of words to "clear out," which they did with amazing rapidity. The officer apologized to us for the behavior o' the "scoundrels," and then, to avoid any such recurrences, he appoints one of his men to escort us to our hotel. , Night falls quickly in the tropical region, and so by the time we ha reached our place of lodging, th city was nestling under a blanket o darkness. The proprietor, a French woman, took us through the marble halls, up a wide stairway and then to our rooms. A lovely woman, dean of a New England college shared a large airy chamber with me. It was very modernistic in design and sur- prisingly clean. We freshened up a bit, and went down for dinner which served on a cozy little veranda by barefooted servant.
