Korotan Concert to Commemorate Victims, Sing Praises of Homeland

Ominous clouds did indeed hang over Slovenia early in the 1940s. Not only did the Axis powers invade the Slovenians’ beloved homeland, but a sinister movement was also taking form within their very boundaries as Communist revolutionaries planned their strategy to import a foreign, Godless ideology that would prove tragic for their vulnerable country.
The annual concert of the singing group Korotan on June 3 (St. Vitus Auditorium, 7:00 PM) is dedicated to those who died in the battle to preserve Slovenia as an independent Christian state — and to those whose lives were shattered by the Communist “revolution.” The first half of this concert marks the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II in Slovenia. The program consists of songs that speak eloquently of the sadness, the pain, and the immeasurable losses inflicted by war.

Mothers watched their young sons leave home to fight a war they did not seek — not for oil, not for money, but quite literally for their God, for their
families, and for their country.

Mir v deželi naše geslo je, saj sinovi smo Slovenije, naše lepe slavne matere.
With “peace in the land” as their motto, they set out to defend their most basic beliefs, asking Divine protection for themselves and their homeland.
Zemlja rodna moja je tako da če treba bil se bom za njo. Zadnja kaplja mojega srca, to je moja domovina!
They were willing to give their lives for their beloved country, and far too many of them did. Widows and mothers hid their tears and did their best to console their young ones as they explained to them their fathers’ fate:

When it is all over, a mother sheds bittersweet tears as she watches her son return — without his brothers.
The first half of the concert ends with “Oj Doberdob.” The added second verse. “Kočevski rog,” pays tribute to the heroic defenders who gave their lives for freedom and Christianity during the postwar massacre.
Because uut of even the worst evils God creates something good, we also have reason to celebrate. After nearly half a
century, Slovenia has shed its chains of oppressive dictatorship by proudly proclaiming itself once again democratic and free, with an independence it has not known in more than a millennium. The fruits of its bitter struggles have at last been reaped.
Thus it is with gratefulness and renewed vigor that Korotan sings the odes to Slovenia that make up the second half of this week’s concert. With the theme of Moja lepa domovina, they sing of what is dear to the hearts of “Slovenci” everywhere: the God-given beauty of their homeland. The rolling hills, the whispering forests, the pristine mountain streams flowing from snow-capped peaks.
The sunny vineyards and dreamy valleys, sleepy towns with hilltop churches. The well-worn paths with roadside shrines that dot the countryside, offering comfort and encouragement to the weary traveler. The birds in the blue skies above, carefree as the wildflowers of the plains. Their Creator has preserved their beauty, as He has preserved the Slovenian nation.

Pope John Paul II to Visit Slovenia May 18 and 19, 1996
Ljubljana Archbishop Dr. Alojzij Šuštar has received official confirmation from the Vatican that Pope John Paul II will visit Slovenia on Saturday and Sunday, May 18 and 19, 1996. The pope had stated previously that he would visit Slovenia in May or June, 1996. Plans already are under way for the visit, the first to Slovenia by a pope. Just last week John Paul II visited the former Czechoslovakia and southern Poland. There are very strong indications that the pope will proclaim the sainthood of Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek during his visit to Slovenia. It is also interesting to note that the pope will be marking his 76th birthday while in Slovenia. He was born May 18, 1920 in the small town of Wado-wice, Poland.	Dr. Rudolph M. Susel

In the shadows of Carl Avenue in one of the original Slovenian settlements around the St. Clair Avenue area in Greater Cleveland were born four young girls who with their relatives and extended
family members have for more than eight decades been contributing members to the larger American Slovenian community in northeast Ohio, and elsewhere.
On July 8, one of the two survivors will celebrau .,er 85th birthday in a manner that has been a trademark of hers for most of her life: she’ll be volunteering at either the weekly bingo function at St. Vitus Parish, or some other function where her lifetime of skills and personal devotion and attention are again requested and needed.
I am referring to the ever-active and one of the most dedicated and contributing members in our broader
American Slovenian community, Josephine Ambrosic (nee Orazem).
Born in the shadow of St. Vitus Church, her own admitted source of strength and consolation during her most trying and difficult times, naša mlada Josephine was born into this world on July 8, 1910 in a far different world from the one in which we live today.
Joseph (Jože) Orazem was her father, her mother was Frances (Francka) Orazem (nee Klančar). Born into this family were three other daughters: Frances (Novak), Ann (Zak), and Marie.
Through her parents and sisters, the Orazem family was and remains dedicated to the
local parish, St. Vitus and the newly formed “Slovenska Dobrodelna Zveza (SDZ), or as it was known then as “Slovenian Mutual Benefit Association.” Today it is known as the “American Mutual Life Association,” (AMLA).
As a point of interest, Josephine and AMLA are both celebrating their 85th birthdays this year.
Through St. Vitus Elementary School our Josephine received her first academic and religious education and set of instructions that she has maintained throughout her long and successful lifespan.
But anyone who knows Josie will state without a mo-
ment’s hesitation that it is her great personal skills to listen, and her underlying compassion, common sense, and great understanding of a person’s particular needs that has endeared her to so many people in northeast Ohio and elsewhere in North America.
One significant sign of these skills is that through her consistent and continuous efforts, and that of sisters and family, her beloved St. Anne’s Lodge (Lodge No. 4) is today the largest AMLA lodge with over 1,200 members.
Josephine not only served as St. Anne’s treasurer for nearly 50 years, but was also a member of the Board of Direc-

tors of AMLA for nearly two decades until her completion and resignment from this responsibility and position at AMLA’s 23rd Regular Convention in 1994.
Her many varied volunteer efforts have ranged from collecting funds for the canonization and beatification of Bishop Frederic Baraga to working at the St. Vitus Food Bank and for many decades of dedication at the St. Vitus Summer Festival.
Together with Frances, Ann, and Marie, the Orazem sisters attended many spiritual exercises at various parishes and religious locations, numerous cultural concerts, and many fraternal events related to either AMLA, KSKJ, or SWU.
Josie’s most recent volunteer work has consisted of working on the St. Vitus Parish Finance Council and the St. Vitus Endowment Trust. Her many years of insight and wisdom have provided sound governance and guidance for the current and future needs of St. Vitus Parish.
One could also see Josie, Frances, Ann, and Marie always active in the proceedings and doings of the St. Vitus Altar and Rosary Society..
Josie is also often seen assisting at AMLA’s summer facility grounds in Leroy, Ohio or for many years volunteering at the many AMLA functions ranging from its annual dinner to the annual Christmas Party sponsored by AMLA.
In short, there has or is rarely an event in northeast Ohio that the Orazem family has not lent its support in terms of either financial or volunteer assistance.
For those of us in our so-called junior or recycled teenage years we can but wonder at where Josie and her sisters have had the energy and stamina for over eight decades that would slow down a person half her age.
Josie would simply state that a lot of prayers and positive thinking and action are the keys to a happy life.
Least one would think that life has been a bed of roses for Josie, one need only look at the loss of her youngest son, John, in the prime of his life when he died in his early 20s after a long illness. The love Josie and her family gave John was manifest in many manners and ways despite the pain and suffering that only a mother could understand and comprehend.
To the great credit of her family, Josie found solace in her “Cross to bear” And one would never hear her complain of this Cross.
On a final note of interest, the Orazem sisters operated “Orazem’s Confectionery” in the Slovenian National Home on St. Clair Avenue from 1944 until 1982. During this time many a Slovenian emigree
found a warm place to go with friendly service and an understanding and open mind. For many Slovenian emigrees the Orazem family and sisters symbolize Christian values through their private and public corporal works of mercy.
As Josie greets this noteworthy birthday through the good graces of Her Redeemer, we wish her, along with her immediate family, and many, many friends, many more years of good health, good friendship, and God’s blessings for this most dedicated servant of God and mankind.

For the second time in five months, Euclid Travel, a full-service business and leisure travel agency, has been recognized for its colorful and imaginative travel window displays.
Euclid Travel, at its 22078 Lake Shore Boulevard address since 1955, and managed by Donna Lucas since 1991, was one of 17 travel agencies nationally to be selected as a winner of the Travel Weekly Sixth Annual Achievement Awards.
The agency’s latest window, captured in Travel Weekly’s recent awards publication, featured mannequins “Ken” and “Barbie” as well as Ms. Lucas, dressed to the nines in a showy Las Vegas salute.
Ms. Lucas and staff enjoy creating innovative and eyecatching windows. Says Lucas, “Our windows are not only fun, they are a great marketing tool, attracting passers-by and walk-in business. And, our prime location at a busy intersection, complete with bus-stop, is incentive to capture more of the market.”
The agency’s window budget is minimal with most apparel and artifacts coming from garage sales and inventory reductions. Many items are collected by agents on their trips to various parts of the country and the world. The most successful window to date, says Lucas, featured train travel. And, the agency’s vibrant “Mexico” theme window won top prize in the Apple Tours’ contest in November.

St. Mary Slovenian School Picnic unites with Corpus Christi procession
This year St. Mary’s Slovenian School picnic will be held on Sunday, June 18 at Slovenska Pristava in Harpersfield, Ohio. Mass will begin at 12 noon followed by the Corpus Christi procession. Dinner after 1:30 p.m. Dancing to the music of the Alpine Sextet at 5 p.m.
This year’s events are combined. The traditional St. Mary’s parish Corpus Christi (Sveto Rešno Telo) Mass and procession with narodne noše to bless the field altars will be held at Slovenska Pristava, not at St. Mary’s Church as usual. (One of the reasons is that both events fall on the same day, and with so many people who attend one or both events missing due to their being on the commemoration tour to Slovenia, the attendance at each would be significantly smaller if held separately.)
Noticed possible errors

In the current paper I noticed the letters which pointed out several errors. I had been noticing spellings that I had questioned - but I hesitated to write a correction.
While we are on the subject
—	in my first letter some weeks ago Kako Sem Se Jaz Likal - the word Likal was misspelled as Lekal. Was that spelled the way it sounds? Incorrect.
On page 7 (5-18-95 issue again) Poljanshek Brothers - is this the correct spelling? Or an Anglecized one?
I always wondered why my family Anglicized our last name. And have often wondered if I should revert to the original. But then this was done years before I was born
—	so I kept it.
Incidentally — St. Nicholas
Cathedral is mentioned in the “Did You Know Slovenia” article — that is where my parents were married. My mother sang in their choir for over 20 years.

After that, the next American Home will be printed on FRIDAY, July 7. The following editions will be printed on Thursdays as usual as we get back to the normal printing routine following vacations.

On Sunday, June 4, the Yukon Button Box Club will host their Sixth Annual Button Box Festival at the SNPJ Picnic Grove in Evanston. The festivities begin at 1 p.m.
There will be eight hours of continuous music on two stages, inside the pavilion and on the outside stage. There will be 14 button box groups performing.

September 5, 1941 We sailed into Alexandria at 0900 hours. Last night I told my instructor about the fright when the firing of the big guns began. This morning he made me stand under the big gun barrels and pose for a picture. He and his friend Tom insisted they be in it too, which made me think — maybe they got a fright, too.
September 10, 1941 Almost daily there were intensive air raid warnings soun-
ding all through the day and mostly up to midnight. Last month and every day of this month seemed to be the worst. It was always very eerie when the sound of a diving plane penetrated the thick steel plates of the battle ship.
At night, hundreds of guns would put up a firing barrage. Tens and tens of powerful reflectors, off the ships and off the shores would give a majestic, if not deadly, sight. Ever so often a plane would be caught in the reflector’s beams — and that was quite a sight also.

always dropped on the city, mainly on the poor Arab quarters near the docks, but the majority of them fell into the sea outside the harbor. However, the land mines dropped with parachutes caused a great deal of damage. The shrapnel, after the guns stopped firing, was murderous, too. November 24, 1941 The air raids were still rather severe. I did not know we had sailed out of the harbor until we were well out on the high seas. I was told we had left Alexandria at 1600 hours. To anyone suffering from seasickness, a battleship is the answer.
November 25, 1941 I was on deck at 0830 hours. There were two battleships with us and I could see a number of destroyers well out at sea. Whatever action we were engaged in, I felt as safe as “The Bank of England.” I was sure one of the battleships opened fire with her “big guns.” I could hear muffled explosions right into the main radio room. This time I felt remarkably calm and never even lifted my head from work. There were only two or three shots, and I felt let down. It was 1645 hours when the instructor and I went on the top deck for fresh air. There we were told that the battleship “H.M.S. Bahram” had sunk.
We could still see patches of oil, swimmers’ heads bobbing out of the water, destroyers picking up survivors, and destroyers far out at sea, zigzagging as if they were in the hunt.
This was a terrible shock to me as I was so sure that a battleship was invincible. In my mind it was something indestructible. What a great tragedy.
Suddenly I felt as if I had lost brothers of mine. I wanted to cry and could not.
It was very quiet in the mess tonight. Nobody talked. Just as well as I would break into tears for sure.
It was an unhappy night.
November 26, 1941 Uneventful and a very sad day for us all. We made it safely to Alexandria at about noon.
November 27, 1941
Already last night I was saying good-bys to the many friends whom I will leave tomorrow for a shore establishment. By now I knew all radio men by name and others by sight.
The O.I.C. of the Royal Yugoslav Navy in exile, Captain Saksida was waiting for me at the gangway. We were driven to “H.M.S. Canopus” a naval shore station where 1 will be taking the wireless courses.
There I met the O.I.C. of the station and the 14 young men who for the next six to eight months will be instructed in wireless telegraphy, and, maybe, commence duty on the new ships that the Yugoslav Government in exile is contemplating buying, the first one being a corvette.

Where have the past nine months gone? Why it seems like only yesterday that we were gathering together for the September 1994 meeting. Here it is summer hiatus again.
Our May meeting of the American Slovenian Club of South Florida was well attended. But we do miss our winter-only members.
Summer in South Florida, for those who have not experienced it, has a lot going for it — the brilliant sun, the warm ocean, shorter lines, less traffic, empty parking spaces — and respite from the heat and humidity is available, thanks to air conditioning.
Invocation entitled “Friendship” was read by Sophie Phillips.
Mildred Holado was our first-time guest.
Members born in May are Ed Blatnik, Anna Carzillo, Agnes Davis, “Beenie” Gregg, Ellie Meuser, John and Olga Ribic and Marion Woj-tyna. Vivian and A1 Nels celebrate 56 years of marriage. The Ribics were married in June, 1932! Congratulations to all.
Thank you is in order for the Makars, who provided a beautifully decorated large cake in honor of Aunt Anna Carzillo’s 91st birthday. You cannot beat Mary and Andrew Makar for their generosity.
Mamie Willis attended the May meeting. As an April birthday celebrant, she treated with the April ham, even though she was hospitalized at the time. Thanks, Mamie. Welcome back.
Many delicious side dishes were contributed to accompany the oven-roasted chicken, prepared by Frances Vraničar and Paula Beavers.
Stan Gortan is spending three months in his homeland. Floridian’s histories are elsewhere. In Stan’s case, his roots and his Mother are in Slovenia.
May has a day set aside to honor Mothers. Ellie Meuser presented a rose corsage to Mary Premru, as the oldest Mother present. Mary Makar pinned the corsage on her Mother.

When you consider that it was only a little over one hundred years ago that Flagler ran his railroad down from St. Augustine, and opened South Florida, you realize that our 21-year-old club is “old.”

St. Mary’s Seniors News:
St. Mary’s Seniors membership increased to over 90 persons present at the May 2 meeting. President Dan Pavšek had suggested a picnic instead of the August meeting. The idea was very receptive by the members. Helen Suhy had asked to be replaced as the Sunshine Person, and Helen Pavšek volunteered.
One did not think that we would lose a member, but Rudy Zupancic’s death was sudden. Members met at Zele’s Funeral Home on E. 152 St. where an eulogy was given by President Dan Pavšek. Our sympathy to wife, children and other relatives.
July 18, a trip has been planned. We will head for a tour of the Plain Dealer, luncheon at Sterle’s Restaurant, and to the Justice Center for the Cleveland Police Museum. The next meeting is on June 6 at 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary’s Cafeteria. Membership is open to the parishioners and friends. Come and enjoy the afternoon as we have refreshments, and of course. Holmes Avenue Pensioners News
The Holmes Avenue Pensioners meeting was held on Wednesday, May 10, at the Collinwood Slovenian Home. There were 182 members and 4 guests present at the meeting.
Although usually we have a guest speaker at our meetings, this month the pensioners were treated to an entertaining show presented by the “Rockettes.” These talented ladies in lovely attire danced to a variety of choreographed routines, including such toetapping tunes as “Stars and Stripes,” “Has Anybody Seen My Gal?,” “Glow Worm,” polkas, and waltzes. Dancers Millie Budnar and Mitzi Urbančič are members of our pensioners group. They did a great job and were lovely as always. It was a very enjoyable show.
Holmes Avenue Pensioners welcomed five new members to our club: Sophia Skopitz, John and Caroline Kustich, Victoria Sustarsic and Ann Lemo.
A speedy recovery to Caroline Stefančič, who is recuperating from hip surgery. Also, get well wishes to Emma Pecharko.
Congratulations to Holmes Avenue Pensioners Steffie Segulin and Jennie Schultz. Steffie was chosen “Mother of the Year” for S.W.U. branch No. 10, and Jennie was acknowledged as a 50-year member of branch No. 10.

The subject today is wild animals and our encounter with them during the last week.
At around 7 a.m., on Memorial Day we looked out our front window to enjoy the lovely scenery of a nice spring day when two huge figures came sauntering down the street. One had just left Stepec’s yard while the other came from Duh’s. They were two deer walking as leisurely as a couple in love out for a stroll.
One would occasionally stop and sniff the ground, the other literally popped his head into one of the newspaper boxes lining the front yards. If someone’s paper is found to be in shreds one fine morning, we’ll know that it was a fourlegged deer, not the two legged variety.
One was heard to say, “How was Tony Stepec’s lettuce this morning, dear.” “Delicious, as usual, deer,” responded the other.
We watched them until they were out of sight near Char-don Rd., probably heading for brother Frank Sega’s garden.

A similar incident happened last October. I was pulling the car into our yard around 8:30 at night when the headlights caught one deer chewing on a pumpkin we had left on our front steps	as	a	Halloween
decoration.	It	had bitten
through the pumpkin and was feasting on the seeds.
The other	one	wasn’t so
smart. It was standing in front of a campaign sign we had on our front lawn — eating the sign. That’s right. The sign was for Ron Šuster and it had orange printed on the top. The deer must have thought the orange was part of a pumpkin, too. So if Ron wonders what happened to his beautiful election sign, don’t blame me, Bambi ate it.

Then at the back of our home, a small sparrow has a nest nearby and keeps flying into a picture window. He does this about 200 times a day. We keep hearing this banging sound. The bird leaves beak marks all over the window.
We bought some suction cups with hooks on them and hung all sorts of things on them, hoping to frighten the bird away, but to no avail.
We finally called a birdwatching society and they said during mating time, the birds are protective of their territory. It probably sees its image in the window and think it’s another bird and it flies into the window to challenge the “other bird” it sees to fight for its space.
We finally had to close the pictures and put drapes in the window to prevent reflections. These sparrows aren’t as smart as the robins Robin Verbose sent all the way from New Jersey. Right now, the banging into the window has stopped, maybe the mating season is nearly over.
It made me think: “If a human had the tenacity of this bird, he’d be another Thomas Edison.”

Both the fax and the regular telephone were out of order on Wednesday and Thursday last week. We called Colorado to dispatch a repairman in Cleveland to fix the problem. After about 35 requests for aid, one came and announced there was a dead line between the telephone pole and our building.
Upon further investigation he announced he spotted a
squirrel chewing on our phone line. He took the wire down, and sure enough it was gnawed through in about a dozen places. “Whatever happened to the squirrel’s love for nuts,” I inquired. “We have this trouble all the time,” the repairman said, “Like rats, they like to chew on something.”
Imagine that, having lunch and listening in on someone else’s phone conversation at the same time. He probably got an earful as well as a mouthful. James V. Debevec

Slovene Home for Aged Auxiliary
Our regular summer session for Bingo — June, July, and August — is once again upon us. We meet each Wednesday evening starting JBingo at 6:45 p.m. and ending at 7:45 p.m.
If you can come by 6:30 p.m., we need your help to bring the residents to the Dining Room and setting up the cards and chips and assisting the players in locating the numbers called on their cards. Please note the change of time: Bingo starts at 6:45 p.m. and ends at 7:45 p.m., allowing the extra time of 15 minutes to serve the residents their refreshments and get them back to their rooms by 8:00 p.m. Even if you cannot come every time, we shall greatly appreciate any assistance you can give us.
The residents appreciate the home-baked cookies we serve and if you can contribute baked goods, it would be greatly appreciated. Just deliver baked goods to the Activities Department in the Launch Room and specify that they are for the Wednesday evening Bingo supervised by the SHA Auxiliary.
The Auxiliary has been in existence since 1975 and we are aging. We are looking for new members no matter what age or sex. Our dues are $5 per year and any amount over that $5 will be appreciated as this is our only solicitation for donations. All of our funds are designated by our by-laws to
be used solely for the benefit of the residents.
Even if you are not a member, we appreciate any help given to us whether financially or by volunteering. Make checks payable to Slovene Home for the Aged Auxiliary, c£b Emilee, 331 East,j266 St., Cleveland, OH 44132-1502. Call her at 261-3427 for information on your dues standing. A much larger TV is needed in the Dining Room and the Auxiliary has voted to make that our big project for the year. Can you help us?

Tauchers Married 50 Years
Louis F. and Josephine R. Taucher celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 27th in Mentor, Ohio.
They were married May 26, 1945, at St. Vitus Church in Cleveland.
Taucher is a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He
was a machinist for General Electric LEO, retiring in 1981 after 30 years. His wife is a homemaker and previously j worked as a chief cook in the cafeteria of St. Vitus School.
They have lived in
Willowick for 36 years.
Their family includes Kenneth F. of Mentor, Raymond L. of St. Paul, Minn., and Cynthia L. Konscak of Westlake.
There are six grandchildren.

HELEN MARY KOHLI
Helen Mary Kohli was a charter member of the National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame in Euclid. She was active in many area Slovenian groups. She served on the executive committee of the Ashtabula County Democratic Party and was a precinct committeewoman.
Mrs. Kohli, 66, of Harpersfield, died of complications on Wednesday morning. May 24 at home.
She was born March 10, 1929 in Cleveland to Caroline (Sega) and Frank Klaus. She attended St. Vitus Grade School. She had lived in Harpersfield since 1942 and was a 1947 graduate of Ashtabula High School.
Mrs. Kohli was a member of Assumption Catholic Church in Geneva and its Altar and Rosary societies.
She was a member of the Slovenian National Home Preservation Society, AMLA Lodge 30 and SNPJ Lodge 225, both in Fairport Harbor, Slovenska Pristava in Geneva, and the Slovenian Women’s Union of America.
Mrs. Kohli was a member of the National Grape Cooperative Association and was a charter member of the Geneva Grape Jamboree Folk Dancers.
She was a charter member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Geneva and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Mrs. Kohli is survived by her husband of 46 years, John; daughter, Caroline	of
Harpersfield; sons, Charles and Byron, both	of
Harpersfield, and John of Houston; six grandchildren; one sister, Caroline Klaus; and two brothers, Elmer Klaus of Madison, and Tony Klaus of Harpersfield.
Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 27 at Assumption Church, 594 W. Main St., Geneva. Arrangements by the Behm Funeral Home of Geneva.

if you’re on edge, think twice before drinking a second cup of coffee. So say researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
During a recent experiment, 14 regular coffee drinkers downed a beverage containing either 300 miligrams of caffeine (equal to two to three cups of coffee) or a placebo when they got to work. By lunchtime, they had 37 percent more adrenaline in their urine after ingesting the caffeine than after drinking the placebo.
“Adrenaline produces in us feelings of anxiety,” says James D. Lane, Ph.D., an assistant research professor at Duke. A coffee drinker himself, Lane doesn’t advocate abandoning java altogether. But, he says, “We may pay a price for drinking it regularly.”

*************** Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Statistics reports that the population of Slovenia is decreasing. In 1992 there were 1,998,912 inhabitants. In 25 years, that is, by the year 2020, it is estimated the population will be down to 1,890,000.
The provincial of the Society of Jesus has made a formal demand of the return of the Church of St. Joseph. It was forcibly taken away from the Jesuits and properly belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ljubljana The second demand is against the City of Ljubljana for the return of the Home for spiritual Exercises.
According to Nedewtja, it is expected that Bishop Anton Martin Slomshek will be pronounced a saint by Pope Paul John II when he visit Slovenia next year, perhaps in Maribor to visit the grave of the late bishop. Slomshek thus would become the first Slovenian saint. Causes for Bishop Friderik Baraga and Bishop Gnidovec are still in progress.
Society of the Catholic Educated had a get-together in the quarters of the Theological Faculty of Ljubljana University on March 21. The occasion was the publication of Dr. Anton Stres’s new book, Man and his God.
The parish of St. Peter in Komenda, dedicated a memorial with a long long list of names of people who were.victims of the ‘war of liberation’. For half of a century the revolutionary government had steadily maintained silence by force. Bishop Jozhe Kvas celebrated a Mass for the Dead for all of the victims.
A “butara” 72 feet high (!) was raised by the young people of St. Maurice, Martyr, Church in Shmarec-'buplic for Palm Sunday. The pole was attached to the church tower.
New Slovenian Association invited John Corselis, noted British historian to speak. H During the war he had been employed at the Charitable Institution in Carinthia (Austria). He described the conditions and the events in Vetrinje after the war. The British Miliatry on their word of Honor assured the refugees that they were being sent to a camp in Italy. Actually they were turning the Home Defenders to the revolutionaries who executed some 12,000 Slovenian defenders. He emphasized that the tragedy was a “Vetrinje miracle”. He had nothing but admiration for the will and stamina of the Slovenian Home Defenders, both those that were executed and those that survived.
It was Dr. Valentin Mershol who on his knees with uplifted hands had pleaded with the British General Alexander who had arrived from Cairo and ordered the immediate stop of sending the Slovenian men, women, and children to be slaughtered by the victory-drunk revolutionists. Dr. Mershol happened to speak English and was listened to. He was never recognized.and publicly thanked by the remaining refugees subsequently scattered throughout the world.
