(prim. Oznanjevaiec, 2004) SSDC (Slovenian Summer Day Camp) 2019 is almost a month away! So, we need to get our planning and organizing happening so that we can create another great week for our kids! Camp will again run the week after the August long weekend - August 6-9th. The hours will be as usual 9am-4pm daily. We have a lot of fun things planned for our kids, but this year, it seems most of my leaders have gotten jobs and are not available to volunteer their time! So, if anyone is interested or available to help us out, please contact me immediately! We will have arts and crafts, sports and on Friday, weather permitting, we will again host our annual end of camp BBQ beginning around 6pm (This time will also be confirmed). This is potluck style event! We ask that you invite your parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles - anyone who'd enjoy a relaxed evening in August to mark August 9th on their calendars to come out and join us for a fun night out with our kids. We will host our annual camper vs. parent/grandparent soccer game - so be sure that everyone brings their running shoes. The registration forms are available in the rear vestibule of our church and the cost is the same as last year! Also, I am excited to announce that this year, we are including a Robotics Challenge day which is sponsored by Moya. This program is free to our SSDC campers and there is a 30 participant limit. So if you are interested, please let me know ASAP as I will be opening this to non-campers for a small fee, but would like to give our campers first dibs at a chance to participate. Children must be be- tween the ages of 8 -12 years to partake, and parents are welcome to come and help their kids! On a personal note, I would like to thank everyone who has not only participated, but supported our day camp over the many years. It is hard to believe that we are hosting our 18th Day Camp event this summer. However, it has come time to start looking for someone who may be interested in keeping this camper's tradition going. I am happy to continue to help with organization, planning and some implementation, however, it is time to pass the torch. So, if any of you are interested, or know anyone who may be interested in working with me over these next two summers and perhaps continue leading this camp, please call me or email me any time; it really is a lot of fun and anyone who helps out, gets to meet some really wonderful kids and great personalities. I hope that we can together figure out a way to keep this camp alive! I can always be reached by email at no-vakh@sympatico.ca or on my cell at 905-3176002. Thank you! First Reading Deuteronomy 30:10-14 Moses reminds the people that the Lord has revealed his law, so that God's word is very close to us. Second Reading Colossians 1:15-20 Jesus is "first-born of all creation"; all else is in him, through him and for him. Peace has come through the shedding of his blood. Gospel Luke 10:25-37 In the parable of the good Samaritan Jesus teaches us that our neighbour is whoever stands in need of our help. Illustration As they follow the long, twisting road that runs between Jerusalem and Jericho, Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land are understandably excited. This is the very road that served as a backdrop to one of Jesus' best-known parables. Gazing across the lonely Judaean desert with its surrounding mountains, they can imagine what a dangerous spot it must have been in Jesus' time and how easily a robber, or a band of robbers, could sweep down upon unsuspecting passers-by, beat them up, take away their possessions and then escape back into the mountains. Nor are they too surprised when about halfway along this lonely road they catch sight of a wayside inn and find that it is called the Inn of the Good Samaritan. In all probability it does not go back to 312 | VESTNIK 2019 Jesus' time, yet it still helps to bring his parable to life. On this spot, you can almost see and hear him, as he begins his story: "A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho..." Gospel Teaching Jesus describes how a traveller was set upon by a band of robbers and left for dead. Before long a priest, and then a Levite, passed by that way, saw the bundle of humanity huddled at the roadside and hurriedly crossed the road and continued on their way. It may not have been just through lack of sympathy that they failed to stop. They may well have thought that the victim was already dead. To have touched his corpse would have rendered them ritually impure and so precluded them from taking part in a Temple service. But then along came a Samaritan -for centuries a deep hostility had existed between Jews and Samaritans - and now the unbelievable was about to happen. The Samaritan, a hated outcast, a member of a despised race, came to the rescue, and at great personal risk, too, because there was always the danger of the robbers returning. Being practical, he used his own beast as a kind of ambulance to ferry the injured man to a nearby inn and even promised to return and repay any outstanding debt there might be. Jesus told this story in response to the question: "And who is my neighbour?" But his reply moves from obligation, "Who counts as my neighbour?" to invitation: "How can I show myself to be a good neighbour?" And the answer to that question is: by assisting anyone who stands in need of help. Application Oskar Schindler was a German industrialist, born into a Catholic family. As a youngster he broke his mother's heart by his carelessness over Sunday Mass; and when he grew to young adulthood, he became known as a womaniser, a formidable drinker and a lover of fast cars. Yet Schindler, the lapsed Catholic and fast liver, risked his life time and again in order to protect the Jews who worked in the enamelware factory he owned, which also produced goods for the military so that it was classed as part of the German war effort. At least three times he was arrested, and could easily have been put to death for protecting his Jewish workers; but somehow by bribery and sweet talk he managed to survive. Towards the end of war, in a last desperate attempt to save his workers' lives, at least for a few more months, he moved his factory to a remote village. Many of the local people, and no doubt there were Catholics among them, were up in arms. Some plastered graffiti on the walls -"keep the Jews out". They were ready to deny the Jews a place to live, even if it meant denying them their last slender hold on life. What Gospel did these people follow? Were some of them considered devout? Did they attend Mass regularly in the village church? Did they spend time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament? Why ask these questions? Because the good Samaritan in this situation, the person who, unexpectedly, had in effect responded to Jesus' invitation -- "Go, and do the same yourself", show yourself a neighbour to your sisters and brothers in need - was the non-practising, fast-living Schindler. We're so used to the story of the good Samaritan; perhaps we need to revisit it. As we do so, we may find that like other parables, the story of the good Samaritan stops us in our tracks, sets us wondering, even shocks us - and perhaps leaves us striking our breast.
