To ni mogoče! SLOVENSKA ŠOLA SLOVENIAN SCHOOL Dear parents, September is here and the school doors are open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL. If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parents or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones used in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. Our Kindergarten and Level One programs are geared towards children who do not speak any Slovenian. Accordingly, they concentrate on vocabulary building by listening to stories, tapes, videos, games and conversation, etc. -with no formal reading and writing, to prepare them for level 2 where they will be eased into reading and writing in Slovenian only when they are ready for it. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL started on September 12, 2015 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon in the classroom behind the upper hall. Regular classes will start on September 19, 2015 at 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. We, on our part, are striving to make it interesting for them. In the summers of 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2013, we organized excursions to Slovenia to give the children the opportunity to see and experience Slovenia, first hand. The last four excursions were unforgettable for the children, a great success, so we look forward to organizing the next one in 2016 or 2017. In turn, dear parents, you must do your part as well! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on September 12th. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you! Sandy Allen - Principal Slovenian International Language School BARAGOVI DNEVI 2015 Letošnje Baragove dneve sta organizirali Slovenski župniji v Clevelandu: župnija sv. Vida in župnija Marije vnebovzete. Ob mogočni pesmi in lepi liturgiji smo doživljali lepoto srečanja in molitve ob evharistični mizi. V dolgi procesiji z narodnimi nošami, Knights of Columbus, ministranti, duhovniki in škofi smo vstopili v cerkev. Vidu. Tokrat je sveto mašo vodil koprski škof v pokoju Msgr. Metod Pirih, ob somaševanju škofa iz Marquetta, Gaylorda in Grand Rapids in 10 duhovnikov, škofu sta pomagala stalna diakova David Kusher /Marija Vnebovzeta/ in dr. Janez Vidmar /Lemont/. Vsem so hitro postregli domačini. Drugo leto bodo baragovi dnevi zopet v Marquettu. First Reading Isaiah 50:5-9 The prophet foretells Christ's total trust in his Father at the time of his passion. Second Reading James 2:14-18 The apostle teaches that faith in God should lead us to active charity. Gospel Mark 8:27-35 Jesus explains that suffering and surrender into God's hands are the necessary prelude to eternal happiness. "If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me." Illustration At primary school, what did you do for fun? For some of us, those days are so far in the past that it may be hard to remember. One thing's for sure - the life of children before our internet age was vastly different. One hobby of those days was raising silkworms. You might start with a sheet of paper on which there were hundreds of minuscule eggs. These would hatch into tiny caterpillars; and then you had to find someone who had a mulberry tree and be a nuisance, and beg for leaves; silkworms were choosy about their diet. The caterpillars grew swiftly, until each of them began to weave a cocoon around itself, a cylinder of bright gold silken thread. You had to be patient enough to leave the cocoon alone, and admire it from the outside, and the day would come when a new moth struggled free from its dark and mysterious home... and - guess what? - proceeded to lay eggs. In China they developed the making of silk from the threads of the cocoon. But no one told us children what goes on in that dark interior in the weeks after the caterpillar disappears. Certainly, the new moth is nothing like the old caterpillar. The caterpillar has to surrender itself to a process of utter transformation; it has to be obliterated so that the moth may be born. This isn't confined to silkworms. Many other creatures go through the same process. And often the result isn't a dull moth, but a stunningly beautiful butterfly. Gospel Teaching In today's Gospel, Jesus asks his friends what people are saying about him. The answers are predictable: "Many people think you are a hero of Jewish history, returning in their hour of need." Peter, however, is inspired to say, "You are the Christ," meaning, "You are the Messiah, the unique saviour sent from God." Jesus tells them to keep this identity of his a secret. Why? Because he still has to submit to his passion, and he doesn't want anyone to interfere with that. Only by surrendering himself entirely to suffering and death, and burial too, can he be transformed into the triumphant risen Christ. He has to accept annihilation, trusting totally in the Father. He has to disappear. Then the Father will restore him to life, but a very different life. He will be the Lord of creation, the judge of the living and the dead, enthroned at his Father's right hand. It's all too much for Peter. He thinks the glory should be possible without the suffering, without the self-surrender. He earns a strong rebuke from Jesus, "The way you think is not God's way but man's." Thirty years later Peter himself will learn the truth of Jesus' words, when he too has to submit to an unjust crucifixion, to being apparently blotted out, for the sake of the Gospel. Only thus will he become the foundation stone of the Catholic Church. Application Religious experts have a phrase for describing all this. They call it "the paschal mystery". That is a piece of theological shorthand! It simply means that Jesus has blazed the trail for us to follow, has shown us the pattern. This is the way to heaven: becoming humble, abandoning yourself into the hands of God, trusting even when it seems very dark, and letting God be God. A great Spanish saint in the sixteenth century wrote about this. His name was St John of the Cross. He used to talk about "the dark night of the senses" and "the dark night of the spirit". If you want to draw close to God, he said, if you want to live in union with God, you have to sacrifice a lot of physical and material comfort. You even have to put up with feeling that God has gone away and left you stranded. God hasn't, of course, but it means that now your prayer will be a prayer of pure trust. And eventually it all comes right. But when it does, you will be a different person, transformed by the power of God: a stunningly beautiful butterfly. You will have had your personal Good Friday and God will give you, as a free gift, your personal Easter. In the words of Isaiah today, "The Lord is coming to my help, who dare condemn me?"
