Svobodni so. Jožefa so zopet organizirali tekmovanje v balinanju. 369 I VESTNI K 2018 VESTNIK 2018 | 370 371 I VESTNI K 2018 SLOVENSKA SOLA - SLOVENIAN SCHOOL - 2018/2019 Dear parents, September is almost here, and the school doors will soon open for another year. This means that it will also be time for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! If you have a child in Kindergarten or older in English school, he/she is eligible to enroll in Slovenian School. Be proud of your culture and heritage! As descendants of our small Slovenian nation, let's make it possible for our children to become acquainted with their ancestral homeland and learn Slovenian. One day they will thank you for having the foresight and the interest in sending them to Slovenian school. We all feel the need to offer our children extra curricular activities in sports, music, dance, etc. Don't you think that it is just as important to offer them the opportunity to broaden their intellect by learning the language of their parents or grandparents? We urge you to think about it and send your children to SLOVENIAN SCHOOL! Our programs are easily comprehended and are geared towards the ability of the children. They are made along the lines of the ones used in English schools so that they can be easily followed and understood. We also prepare the children of our parish for First Holy Communion and Confirmation. Registration for SLOVENIAN SCHOOL is on September 8th, 2018 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in the classroom behind the upper hall. Regular classes will start on September 15th, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Although our goal is to teach the children to read, write and speak Slovenian, more importantly, it is to instill into them a Slovenian identity, a feeling of love and pride towards their Slovenian roots and their cultural heritage. Because our Slovenian School is a part of the Slovenian community, it also gives the children a sense of belonging. It is a place where they make lasting friendships. Our children are the guarantee for the continuance of our Slovenian identity and, more importantly, the continuance of our Slovenian community. It is important that we work together to keep their interest alive. Slovenian School has been a rite of passage for so many of our Slovenian youth, and we would like to keep this tradition going! Please give SLOVENIAN SCHOOL your full consideration and register your children on September 8th. If you have friends, who are of Slovenian background and this notice does not reach them, please tell them and encourage them to send their children to our school. The cost is $75 for one child, $140 for two children, and $210 for 3 children. Be proud that you are Slovenian and give your children the same opportunity! We look forward to seeing you! If you have any questions, you can contact Sandy by email at sfer-letic@gmail.com. Completed applications should be emailed to t_zupancic@hotmail.com by September 14th, 2018. Response: Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. First Reading Joshua 24:1-2. 15-18 At Shechem, in central Israel, the assembled people formally renew the covenant and profess total loyalty to the Lord. Second Reading Ephesians 5:21-32 Paul urges that the relationships within marriage should reflect the love that Christ has for his Church. Gospel John 6:60-69 Some disciples reject Jesus' teaching, but Peter, spokesman for the Twelve, boldly declares: "Lord, who [apart from you] shall we go to?" "We too will serve the Lord, for he is our God." Illustration Only the shell of the old church remained; it had long since been replaced by a fine new building. The sole indication of what it had once been was the tattered remnant of a wayside pulpit notice. It still clung to a notice board in front of the main entrance and it was just possible to make out its message. "Choose God," it said, "choose life." Those four simple words - "choose God, choose life" - are a summary of the Bible's message. They are also a summary of the theme that runs through today's readings. In the first of them we meet Joshua, one of Israel's outstanding military commanders. In a series of victories he established his people in the 375 I VESTNI K 2018 promised land of Canaan. By now he is old and knows that his end is near. He calls the people together at Shechem in the heart of their new homeland and delivers a moving speech. He says nothing of his stunning victories, but only tells the people of a critical choice that they have to make: Joshua calls them to "choose today whom you wish to serve"; is it to be the Lord God who brought them out of slavery in Egypt or the pagan Canaanite gods? (Those pagan gods must have seemed enticing: they made few demands and offered their followers the prospect of a virtually do-what-you-like kind of existence.) Joshua says that he and his family are setting an example: "As for me and my House, we will serve the Lord." The people reply: "We too will serve the Lord, for he is our God." They choose God, they choose life. We might call it the crowning victory of Joshua's life. Gospel Teaching The Gospel, too, centres on a choice. In recent weeks we've heard Jesus talking about the importance of faith, which brings us into closest union with him. Last week he spoke plainly about the Eucharist, ending with the words: "anyone who eats this bread will live for ever". This is crunch time; it's all too much for some of his hearers. "This is intolerable language," they say. "How could anyone accept it?" Jesus agrees: it isn't easy to accept such a claim; in fact, without the help of the Holy Spirit, it would be impossible. But he doesn't go back on what he's said, not even when - and this is one of the saddest sentences in the Gospels - "many of his disciples left him". He takes back nothing. Incredibly, he goes further; he turns to the Twelve and asks, "What about you, do you want to go away too?" He knows he could lose his closest friends over his teaching about the Eucharist. Peter has a wonderful response: "Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe." He and the other apostles cannot understand, any more than the other folk could, how Jesus will do what he says, how he will give himself to us in the Eucharist, but their faith tells them that he has the message of eternal life. They trust him: they choose God; they choose eternal life. Application There is a sense in which that Gospel story becomes a reality at Mass. As each one of us comes to communion, the priest or minister holds up the host and says: "The Body of Christ". All we see is a wafer of bread; that's what it will taste and feel like. And yet, as we look at the host, we say, "Amen". A tiny word, so tiny that it's easy to mumble it without a second thought; and yet it's full of meaning. It comes from a Hebrew root that suggests solidity and strength. It is our "Yes", our act of faith. We believe this is the body of Christ: the same Christ who once walked the roads of Palestine; the Christ who healed the sick and comforted the rejected; the Christ who kept people spellbound when he spoke; the Christ who died for us on a cross; the Christ who rose again in glory. The Eucharist is above all the sacrament of faith, and faith is more than simply saying, "I believe"; it's total commitment to Jesus. Our "Amen" is like Peter's declaration: "Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life." We are making a decisive choice: we choose God, we choose life -that fullness of life that God alone can give.
