Naznanilo o pogajanjih so objavili ameriška uradni krogi. Posvetovanja so v teku v Washingtonu glede zalaganja Finske s poljedelskimi pridelki in drugimi potrebščinami. V tem dolgem času je človek dosegel milijone in milijone uspehov, toda delo že ni dovrženo in Ae ga čaka milijone in milijone novih uspehov. Človek z dvema želodcema kajpada ne more živeti, ker dva želodca ubijata drug drugega. Ce bi spačenega otroka puatil — kakor «o tak-Ine nakaze pustili v preteklosti, ko Ae niso vedeli, kaj storiti — bi otrok umrl v nekaj dnevih. . Druga velika človekova revolucija pa pride — in morda kmalu — ko ae bo lotil "človeko-reje'* ali znanstveno planiranega razvoja svo-jega naraščaja. Danea m ljudje le vedno rodijo Uko, kakor zraaU plevel ali divje živali, popolnoma prepuščeni slepi naturi. Ni nič čudnega, če Je potem le toliko telesnih in mentalni» spačkov. Veste, bratje in sestre, to nI mala stvar, ako br. 16 dec. To pot se naU seja prične bolj zgodaj. Frank PodHper. 149. Enroll Your Friend* in the SNPJ in 1939 page sa For Members of Slovene National Benefit Society and American Slovenes WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13 Another Major SNPJ Event in Pennsylvania The seventh annual Duckpin Tournament, sponsored by the Western Pennsylvania SNPJ Federation of English Speaking Lodges, will again be held at Carrick, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on January 1st, 1040. The Tournament is a major national event held yearly on the first day of the new year. All previous events sponsored by our younger group on that date have attracted large congregations of members and teams, and this year's tourney, judging on the strength of reports coming from that sector, indicate that it will easily surpass all others both in active participation and representation. Our youthful, energetic members in Western Pennsylvania always manage to do big things in a big way, for they are staunch and loyal supporters of every collective undertaking under the banner of the Slovene National Benefit Society, steadfastly clinging to and enthusiastically backing its worthwhile enterprises. They are doing this with a view of advancing our Society's ideals and principles and for the building up of Its ranks. And they deserve our united support. The prizes offered to contestants in this year's Duckpin Tourney, for teams as well as for doubles and singles, as announced by the Committee, are lucrative enough to draw many an ardent duckpin bowler to take part. Each participant, beginner or veteran, young or old, will have an opportunity to make his efforts worthwhile. The event is open to all members whether they bowl in teams or individually. The affair will be climaxed by a ball at Eagles Hall. On January 1st, 1940, many of our young and old members will gather at Carrick for another annual reunion and homecoming. Once more members will be given an opportunity to mingle with their friends and fellow members. And this occasion will be on the first day of the new year. John Rak, National Athletic Board memks of Johnstown, Pa. And from all indications the Seventh An™ Duckpin Tournoment of the SNPJ seems certain to be anothi record-breaking affair. We do not say thia as so much idle writing matter—for mere publicity'a sake. We are forced to thia conclusion by the overwhelming number of requests for information concerning the tournament in general, for requests for entry blanks and rules, for requests regarding bowling procedure, directions, and pjizes. Already the reaponses to this tournament have surpassed sll those of previous Duckpin Tournaments. The Annual SNPJ Duckpin Tournament is by far thq largest single athletic event conducted by SNPJ lodges of Western Penna. It has been promoted solely by the English Speaking Federation of Western Penna, but its entrants include SNPJ members from both E. S. lodges and senior lodges, from lodges in SNPJ sections in Ohio and West Virginia, as well as the vicinities of Johnstown and Pittsburgh. In recent years it has come to be regarded as one of the three largest activities of our Society. For the orderly promotion of the tournament it is important that the various lodges and members become acquainted with the rules, events, and essential details. The rules have been published in a previous issue and will appear again next week. The five members of the National Athletic board—Frank Bolka, Pres., Frank Groser, Sec'y, George Curda, John Rak, and Louis Kumer are fully informed of the rules and essentials, and members are requested to consult them for needed information, aa well as from the tournsment committee. Unlike the National Bowling Tournament, the National Duckpin Tournament io a one-day affair, so entrants must be at the alleys at 10 a. m. New Year's Day, January 1st. All practice games must be rolled before 10 o'clock and the five-person team events will be rolled first, followed immediately by the doubles' and singles' events. It is euggeetod, to avoid delay and confusion, that a team manager be appointed so that all bowlers are on hand when a par- ticular event is carded. The tn blanks mailed to the various |«dk should be returned to the secret] of the tournament, Bro. John Ba faldi, Morgan, Pa. Any informal is likewise obtainable from the cha man, Frank Podboy, Strabane, Pa., from any member of the committee That thie tournament is again he at the Stanley Alleys in Carrick, P 2086 Brownsville Road, is very'eaJ to explain. It is a centrally locati spot, large enough with its twentl eight alleys to conveniently accomm date the bowling entrants and nume oua visitors, snd beautifully eongtruc ed to appeal to the most exacting a tendant. More than that, it is cated just a block from the Garru Eagles Hall, site of the dsnce folio ing the tournsment, and a spacio dance pavilion that leaves nothi more to be desired. The ever-po ular Vadnal Orchestra of Clevelan will provide music to the entertail ment and enjoyment of all. The Enlgiah Speaking Federatio the committee, and the athletic boa invite you to join in another gre SNPJ celebration on New Year's Da January 1, 1940. This annual eve is always looked forward to by lodges and members of Weste Penna, and they always extend the whole-hearted cooperation. Again point to another successful SNP affair. '<* ... j Little Fort Lodge WAUKEGAN, ILL.—The editor, of this column have loft open Little Fort'e space in the Proeveta tor two week* with the expreoe purpoee of providing plenty of room for any interacted member of Little Port to offer a rebuttal to our last article. Ae you have all teen, there have been no contradictory remarks made in the Proaveta (over the back fence talking doea not count); fo we gather that all the Little Port member» are in complete accord with our word« con oerning the opecial aaaeaament. the eatablishing of a permanent Edaca tloaal aad Membership (ommittee and the providing for a Nominating ('ommittee for 1949. And so today we offer an article retarding the ex pensea and incomes for the year 1999 (as of end of November). It ia not our purpoee to whitewash the cash transactions of the lodge for there Is no need to attempt to explain—there ia nothing to conceal. Rather it ia our purpoae to answer in part the inevitable question (usually said in a pompous and accusing manner), "What have you done with the Little Port money? We should have more than this, what with all our affairs and so forth!" Those who aak this question hardly ever attend any of the affairs, much leas attend any of the monthly meetings, much less even help put on affairs; in atead they criticise (destructively) and waste time at the annual meeting when ao much should be done. The Caafc Transactions The following figures are not the official figures of the treasurer or the trustees; they are the figures obtained after a hurried check-over by the editors, who are not accountants. Our incomes for the year are aa follows: f 130.80 in special assessments (the January, February, and part of March apodal assessment« are not included here); a profit of about $80 from the first "A Night in Slovenia"; a profit approximately 9100 from the second "A Night In Slovenia"; a profit of $224.60 from the 13th Anniversary ($33.09 was left of this money when the new books were opened as of March 1—assessments and miscellaneous expenses were paid from the 18th anniversary money); a losa of $486 from a Beach Party and Oolf Tournament; $18.92 from old asressments collected; and SI JO from pass books. Our expenses for the year are many and varied. Telephone $81.27; flowers to the deceased and sick $9.24; ads to lodges $16; gifts (to new-born babies of our members) $7.21; $5 to the Juvenile Circle; Iron Lung Fund of the City $6; rent for 1988 127; salarlest-for 1988 $63; $6 to the J UP; office supiplea $14.29; sports $6.87; and other miscellaneous expenses too numerous to mention. Anyway, this leave« our treasury (Little Fort's own money) at about $200 in the black; with the proper cash put a*ide for secretary aalarlaa, advance assessments, assessments col. lected (both Juvenile and Adult). Such is the state of affairs of Little Fort as of November. The ex-pcn.es Incurred during 1939 wara necessary; everyone of the many expenses helped In some way to keep up our lodge. Potential opportunities for income In 1940 appear to be I) 14th Anniversary program in February, t) HNPJ Bowling Tournament in May, 8) a dance in the fall. The expenses for 1940 will certainly equal those of 1939—even though there may be a misguided attempt to cut from the 1940 appropriations list item» such as flowera, baby gift«, JSP, Juvenile Circle, etc. Any attempt to cut any of the above appropriations from the list will indicate that the members of Little Fort are spineless; that they can't go out and work for an additional $30 to pay certain thing« which mean mare to both the SNPJ and to the people than $30 in cash In a hank. We have always felt that the money which is owned by a lodge Is to be used for only one purpose) to provide entertainment, Joy, culture, learning, etc.. to iU members and to the community. l.odge money must be spent; it does no rood to have money In hanks and savings accounts when so much could be done with It. When the money is spent, the member» should go out and get more—either by putting on affairs or by special asse*«m«nU. With IM0 m«mbors working together the income of a lodge could be 20 times that of the present; also the things so badly needed now (sports, books, a strong Juvenile Circle, more donations worthy causes, etc.) could be provided for. Let pa, then, consider very cant-fully thé possibilities for a larger treaeury for Little Port the expenaes etc., and we can come to only one concluaion. If the members ecan pro vide the money by putting on successful affairs, well and 'good! If thay can't, then a special assessment is the only alternative! Knowing some of the Little Fort members as we do, the writers faal that we should begin considering immediately Just how much of a special aaaeasment there should be in 1940! "AJCRE8," Lodge 668. Our Second Generation Greatly Interested in Novak's Dictionary CHICAGO.—The fact that a crying need of an English-Slovene and Slo-vene-English Dictionary is being felt more and mora every day among our immigrants in this country as wall as amongst our people over there in Ju goalavia, and that for this reason i great demand for it is to be expected as soon as the book has been brought out and put on the market, cannot be denied. - ? I knew that before I began to work on it, a few years ago. But I was not so sura about the sentiment regard ing such a book among tha people of our second generation, as they were then an entirely unknown quantity to me In this respect, and yet.I hoped that they will go along with their par enta in this matter, at least many of them. Aocording to many letters coming to me from different parte of the country, especially since the publica tion of Adamk's article in behalf of my work, I may state that my hope did not fail me. Here is one picked at random: "Dear Mr. Novak: My response to the article about you was immediate, but because of careless mislaying of the page containing your address, there was a delay in sending the small contribution. "You must derive a great deal of satisfaction in seeing a finished product of your efforts and ambitions, something that will not be short-lived. Certainly a lan-guage is not short-lived because there will never be the supremacy of one universal language to de-moliah the rest, so there should be no doubts as to the worthiness of your objective.
